Its going to be a tough road ahead for films from the South

The past few years has seen films from the South score and even break records which was a rarity earlier but it has been presented as some sort of dominating wave which has left Hindi cinema behind which is very far from the truth. Whatever the struggles of Hindi films, it will remain the biggest film industry in the country simply because of the POTENTIAL audience it has in sheer numbers. Its a different matter that this potential audience has not been reached generally over the last few decades or so.
This so called pan India thing is just not there, no matter how much the media shouts as the majority of these so called pan India films bite the dust. But the ones which get though are talked about. It is going to be even tougher now for this South content as generally its built on sequels. The first film gets appreciation and then the second one gets the numbers but this game is just not valid for South films but all films.
The sequel thing will run its course as it cannot go on forever due to over supply be it from Hindi cinema or South. Hollywood has already seen this happen. There was this South wave in the 80's but it was slightly different as it was banners and directors from the South making films in Hindi with Hindi film stars and it lasted 3-4 years before normal service was resumed. Also that was actually a wave while the present is more media made.
The problem the South films will face are expectations because of this media made wave and their huge budgets and how they open when they are not sequels. The wider audience responds when its a sequel to an appreciated film but outside that, its just a few areas where there is a ready audience.
Below are the opening day collections of South films in Hindi when not sequels and they pretty much say it all with just a handful which can be called good opening and mainly Prabhas starrers who has a following in certain Hindi belts. There are not many films to get even 5 crore nett till date and it will be similar films going forward which history shows is always dwindling returns. The road is only going to be tougher from here.

WILL HAPPY PATEL KHATARNAK JASOOS AND RAHU KETU BRING SOME RESPITE AT THE BOX OFFICE?
Last week’s major release The RajaSaab has emerged as a disaster in Hindi and also in the original Telugu language. In Hindi, it opened at Rs. 5 crores as predicted last week. However, it reached this number due to feeding, as per the allegations. On the second day, self-booking was allegedly not done and hence, the earnings dropped to Rs. 3.75 crores. The film collected the same amount on Sunday, while on Monday, it crashed and collected a mere Rs. 1 crore. In Hindi, it’ll barely touch the Rs. 20 crore mark in its lifetime. All-India, the film earned Rs. 104.50 crores in all languages, which is too low, considering the mammoth budget.
Now all eyes are on this week’s two releases. The first one is Happy Patel Khatarnak Jasoos. It is directed by Vir Das and Kavi Shastri and produced by Aamir Khan. Vir also features in the film in the lead role and he’s joined by Mona Singh and Mithila Palkar. The film looks quirky and has adult humour like Delhi Belly. The promo promises a crazy time. Moreover, Aamir Khan also stars in the movie and even Imran Khan has a special appearance.
However, the trailer has not worked while the songs failed to be chartbusters. Hence, the interest of the audience is minimal. Moreover, it’s a film which would only appeal to the urban class. The film is expected to open at Rs. 1 crore at best. With good word of mouth from the target audience in urban cities, it might see a huge jump on Saturday and Sunday.
The other release of the week is Rahu Ketu. It brings back the Fukrey pair of Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma and also features Shalini Pandey and Chunky Panday. Again, just like Happy Patel Khatarnak Jasoos, the trailer and songs of Rahu Ketu haven’t left a mark.
Since Rahu Ketu looks more mainstream, it should hopefully open better than the other film and collect Rs. 1-2 crores.

(Crisp) Movie Review: THE RAJASAAB by FENIL SETA

The RajaSaab mixes horror-comedy with a psychological twist. On paper, this novel concept must have sounded exciting. But Maruthi's script is weak and his direction is messy. A few scenes stand out in the first half, while the intermission point raises hopes. However, the film goes downhill in the second half. In the middle of the tension, two romantic songs have been forced into the narrative. A crucial scene shown in the trailer is shockingly absent from the film! The climax, meanwhile, is unbearable. Prabhas tries his best to make the goings-on entertaining with his antics and charm. However, the poor writing lets him down. Sanjay Dutt is quite good as the antagonist. Of the girls, Malavika Mohanan gets the most prominent role and she does quite well. Nidhhi Agerwal is presented beautifully and is decent. Riddhi Kumar is fair, though her screen time is very limited. Zarina Wahab and Boman Irani are satisfactory in a small role. Songs are bad, while Thaman S' background score is catchy. All in all, The RajaSaab should be avoided.

WILL THE RAJA SAAB’s HINDI VERSION SUCCEED AT THE BOX OFFICE?
The first release of 2026, Ikkis, hasn’t performed as per expectations. It opened more than expectations at Rs. 6 crores, giving hopes that it would break the first Friday jinx. However, the dip in the weekends indicated that the film will not have a long run, despite favourable reviews. On Monday, it dropped to Rs. 1.25 crores. The first week collections are expected to be around Rs. 21-22 crores and at the most, it'll cross the Rs. 25 crore mark.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on the major release of the week – The Raja Saab. It stars Prabhas, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Malavika Mohanan, Nidhhi Agerwal and Riddhi Kumar. The horror comedy is directed by popular director Maruthi and backed by People Media Factory, that also made Mirai and Jaat in 2025.
The Raja Saab’s first teaser was launched way back in June 2025. This is when it was supposed to release on December 5. The film was then pushed to January 9. The trailer was released on September 29 followed by release of song promos. Despite the popular horror comedy genre, casting of Prabhas and grandeur, the buzz is limited in Hindi. The advance booking is yet to commence full-fledged in the national chains over show sharing issues. Hence, it is difficult to ascertain as of now how many tickets have been booked and its opening day number. Yet, one can assume that the film will open at Rs. 5-7 crores at the box office in Hindi. A good word of mouth can lead to a jump in the weekends as the family-friendly genre can attract audiences in hordes, provided the reports are positive.
In Overseas and in the original Telugu version, The Raja Saab is all set for an earth-shattering opening.
