I thought Kareena Kapoor was a snob, but when I interacted with her, I realised she is cool-Tarun Arora

Wonder why we don’t make films like Jab We Met these days: Tarun

Actor Tarun Arora played Anshuman, the boyfriend of actor Kareena Kapoor Khan’s character, Geet, in Jab We Met (2007), and he feels grateful for being a part of the film. “Even after 15 years, Jab We Met continues to be a good watch. It makes me proud. I wonder why we don’t make such films anymore. The younger generation enjoys it, too,” the 43-year-old shares.

Arora adds that it was after this project that he started getting good offers: “After the release, I waited for better roles, but Bollywood offered me similar ones. I am glad makers down South gave me some good roles, which were bigger and meaningful. I felt accomplished.”

For Arora, working with his “popular” co-stars (Khan and Shahid Kapoor) was a learning experience. “They were so professional despite their personal issues (Khan and Kapoor had broken up around that time). At first, I thought Kareena was a snob, but when I interacted with her, I realised she is cool. Shahid was so devoted to his work. I learnt to be focused on the job from him,” the actor ends.

It is tough to wait for quality work to come our way-Tarun Arora

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 2, 2020)

Remember Anshuman from the film Jab We Met (JWM; 2007)? Well, actor Tarun Arora is pleased that he is still recognised for his role in the iconic film. He is also happy to have got a lot of recognition for the performance but the appreciation didn’t result in better roles. In fact, he got similar roles which was a downer.

“I was offered roles with lesser screen space which was not acceptable to me. I could see my career wouldn’t pick up if I walked down that route. I had hit the benchmark with JWM. Sadly, no one could see me in other kinds of roles,” says the model-turned-actor.

Back then he left Mumbai and moved to Bengaluru where he had a restaurant and focused on it. He waited for the kind of roles he wanted to do and it paid off. “It is tough to wait for quality work to come our way. I diverted my mind with other things. I wasn’t young and didn’t have a film background or anyone to help me out. I had spent my youth modelling and had done hotel management. So starting my restaurant in Bengaluru made sense. Later, I began doing theatre alongside, too. I was confident as JWM had proved that I was on the right track. I got a number of interesting roles in Telugu and Tamil films that I began enjoying. The roles, the passion, the work experience — I didn’t miss anything. Work over there was a different journey but a fulfilling one,” he says.

Arora is glad to be back to Hindi films with the Akshay Kumar-starrer Laxmii. “I have worked with director Raghava Lawrence in his Tamil films and he felt I suited the role, so I grabbed the opportunity to do a good Hindi film and work with him again. I was happy that the role was unlike Anshuman, as for the Bollywood fraternity, I wanted to be seen in roles other than that,” he shares.

Tarun Arora aka Anshuman of Jab We Met to play antagonist in Laxmmi Bomb

Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani began shooting for Raghava Lawrence’s official Hindi adaptation of his Tamil horror-comedy Muni 2: Kanchana, titled Laxmmi Bomb, in a city studio in April. They are now gearing up for the second schedule which kicks off towards the end of July. Mirror has now learnt that the makers have roped in Tarun Arora to play the antagonist.

The actor had played Kareena Kapoor’s boorish boyfriend, Anshuman, in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met which released back in 2007. Down South, Tarun has worked with Chiranjeevi in Khaidi No. 150, with Pawan Kalyan in Katamarayudu and with Ravi Teja in Amar Akbar Anthony.

“Like in the original, the Hindi villain is also a corrupt MLA, and Raghava, who has worked with Tarun in Kanchana 3, which released in April this year, believes that he is apt for the part. His new avatar is very different from his Jab We Met character. The formalities are currently underway,” informs a source close to the development. Meanwhile the hunt to play Tarun’s younger brother in the film is still on.

The first film in the Kanchana series, titled Muni released in 2007. In it, the lead character, played by Raghava himself, is possessed by a vengeful spirit. The sequel, Muni 2: Kanchana opened four years later, and in it the male lead was once again possessed, but by a transgender ghost. The third part Kanchana 2 arrived in the theatres in 2015 while the fourth released in April this year.
