Switzerland honestly felt like a postcard come to life-Aamna Sharif

Natasha Coutinho (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 16, 2026)

Actor Aamna Sharif took off with her husband Amit Kapoor and son Arain to Europe last month to have a pre-birthday celebration ahead of her birthday today. While she had a certain itinerary in mind, the unprecedented heatwave that the continent is currently experiencing, made her look at Europe through a different lens as she experienced the rising mercury levels first hand.

Sharif and her family went to France and Switzerland during the two week trip, but they were taken by surprise by the scorching heat, as temperatures rocketed to near 41°C in various parts.

“I was aware of the heatwave, but no weather forecast can prepare you for experiencing it. After the first couple of days, I got more accustomed and realized that we needed to listen to our bodies instead of trying to race through a checklist,” she says, adding that they took more breaks, consumed cold coffee and gelato, and took things at a slower pace.

The different approach gave her a sense of calm too. “We had to be more flexible because of the heat. Instead of trying to pack too much into the afternoons, we started our days earlier and planned most of the sightseeing for the mornings and evenings. I also made sure to stay hydrated and keep my energy levels up,” says the actor who turns 44 today.

Ask her about the take back she had from this trip and Sharif shares, “France was all about culture, great food and beautiful streets, while Switzerland honestly felt like a postcard come to life.”

I went to Sanjay Gandhi National Park with our cycles but it wasn’t very enjoyable-Rajeev Khandelwal

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; June 3, 2025)

On World Cycling Day, Rajeev Khandelwal shares his connection with cycling that began in his childhood days while growing up in army cantonments. The actor also talks about how he loves to explore new destinations on two wheels.

‘I learnt cycling with the jawans while growing up in army cantonments’
Recalling his earliest cycling memories, Rajeev says, “I’m an army kid and I spent my early days growing up in army cantonments. All the jawans who worked with my father had cycles and they would drop me to school on their cycles with me sitting ahead. Sometimes I cycled too, and that’s how I learnt —with the jawans. Those are my earliest memories of riding, and it was so much fun. We’d also cycle to get milk for my mom. Those were such simple, beautiful moments.”

‘There should be more cycle-friendly roads in Mumbai’
Even today, cycling remains a part of his routine, “In Mumbai, I cycle to the gym and that’s the most I can manage. There are very few cycle-friendly roads in the city, and often people recognize me, so it gets tough. But I still prefer using the cycle whenever I can. There should definitely be more cycle-friendly roads and zones. I think a lot more people would take it up seriously. In a city like Mumbai, it can really help with beating the traffic and getting around short distances easily.”

He adds, “A while back, some friends and I went to Sanjay Gandhi National Park with our cycles, but even there, it wasn’t very enjoyable. People don’t really give space to cyclists. I understand that everyone’s in a rush, but it makes it difficult for cycling to be stress-free.”

‘Cycling is the best way to explore a new place’
When he travels abroad, cycling is his go-to way of exploring the destination. “Whenever we go abroad, Manjiri (wife) and I like to explore the place on cycles. Even in Switzerland, we spent an entire day on bicycles. We carried the cycles onto trains, got off at new towns and explored them on two wheels. That experience has stayed with me. Cycling is the best way to explore a new place. For me, cycling is not just about fitness. When I’m cycling, there is a certain peace that I feel as the breeze hits my face. A calm sets in and you feel totally in control of the moment."

Elnaaz Norouzi becomes victim of cybercrime: "It feels like someone is always watching me"

Sacred Games actor Elnaaz Norouzi falls victim to cybercrime: 'I found my private pictures'

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; March 24, 2025)

Elnaaz Norouzi became a victim of cybercrime when she clicked on an email that landed in her inbox in January. The incident continues to haunt her even today.

What happened?
The Sacred Games actress says, “On January 18, I got an anonymous email. Normally, you don’t click on such emails, but this one had my password in the subject line. It piqued my curiosity, so I opened it. Inside, I found my private pictures attached, along with a message that read, ‘I have your pictures, if you don’t want them posted online, then reply to me as soon as possible. If not, the next email will be a link with the pictures online.’”

‘The person behind this crime knew how to evade getting caught’
Elnaaz immediately contacted the Cybercrime Cell, and the investigation revealed that the email had originated from a server based in Switzerland. “The response was swift, and they got back within two days. The Cybercrime team found out that it was one of those servers where details of the users were not shared. It means that the person behind this crime knew how to evade getting caught. We couldn’t get more information about the user, but they (the Cybercrime team) did terminate the user’s account. I am worried he/she might contact me using a new email account now.”

‘Now, I’ve updated all my passwords and change them every month’
During her investigation with the Cybercrime team, Elnaaz was asked if she had clicked on any unfamiliar links. She says, “I remembered I had filled out a form on an unknown link. The Cybercrime team visited my home, instructed me to back up my data, and helped me format my devices. Now, I’ve updated all my passwords and change them every month. They’re in regular contact with me and have asked me to report any suspicious emails or messages.”

The ordeal has left Elnaaz mentally scarred. She says, “Now, I’m scared to even open my emails or social media accounts. I’m terrified that the criminal might have posted my private photos online. I go to bed anxious and wake up in the same state. I’ve had to reach out to a therapist a few times to help me calm down. I feel like my privacy has been violated. It feels like someone is always watching me, and I am living in constant fear.”

Nargis Fakhri married to Tony Beig in a hush-hush wedding in Los Angeles?

Nargis Fakhri Marries Boyfriend Tony Beig In Los Angeles. Inside Pics From Wedding Go Viral

Vinay MR Mishra (BOMBAY TIMES; February 23, 2025)

Actress Nargis Fakhri and her longtime beau Tony Beig have reportedly got married in a hush hush wedding in LA, we have heard. From what we have gathered the couple got hitched at a five-star property in Los Angeles, last weekend.

A source shares, “Both Nargis and Tony ensured that nobody clicked pictures of the two from the wedding. It was an extremely private function with only family members and close friends.” Apparently, the newlyweds are in Switzerland for their honeymoon.

Nargis and Tony reportedly started dating in 2022. After almost three years of courtship, they seemed to have finally decided to take the plunge.

We reached out to Nargis for a comment, however, there was no response till the story went online.

For the unversed, Tony is a Kashmiri born LA based businessman. Nargis, on the other hand, made her debut with Rockstar and has been a part of multiple Bollywood films such as Housefull 3 and more.

Earlier in an interview with us, Nargis for the first time admitted to being in a relationship. Nargis who never opened up about her relationship said, “I don’t want to go into the details, but yes, I have someone in my life. I am very happy.”

She also added, “I am a very lucky person that I am loved by many. I am a partner person, so I love to do things with people I care about. And it doesn’t have to be just in a relationship. No, I am not an obsessed girlfriend. Everybody who is with me loves my company so much that they miss me when I am not around."

When asked if she would want to make things official soon, she replied, “What is official? Even those who are married aren’t official! Good love is the one that’s stable; it is something that makes you feel normal and at home.”

My trolls are the most vella, useless people on this planet-Archana Puran Singh

MY TROLLS
ARE
MOST
VELLA
Archana Puran Singh talks about why she schooled a troll recently and the importance of sending out a powerful message
Navya Kharbanda (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 28, 2023)

Archana Puran Singh, 60, refused to be silenced when a troll on Instagram attempted to ridicule her appearance recently. On Monday, Singh shared a photograph of herself with her husband, actor-director Parmeet Sethi, during their trip to Switzerland. While most of the comments poured in with love and positivity, one particular comment stood out, targeting Singh’s appearance.

The now-deleted comment read, “Woman kam, man zyada lag rahi ho. Kapil sahi kehta hai bohot time laga hoga aapko roop parivartan karne mein”. Refusing to let such negativity go unanswered, Singh responded to the troll, “Kitni ghatiya soch rakhti ho itni kam umar mein....”

“My trolls are the most vella (idle), useless people on this planet,” Singh tells us, while acknowledging that she doesn’t expect everyone on social media to like her: “But at least do not comment on somebody’s (appearance) and say that ‘you look like a man’. Saying (something like that) to degrade a human is appalling.”

While Singh “typically avoids engaging with trolls”, she explains why she felt compelled to respond in this particular instance.

“Sometimes, a reply from a celebrity helps to reinforce a good social message. Maybe a lot of people will read my reply and understand the point I am trying to make [and try to be careful about their words and actions going forward],” stresses Singh, who is known for her role of Miss Braganza in the 1998 film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

She adds, “I have moved on after my reply, but I am sure that girl got her two minutes of fame.”

‘Don’t look at a comedy show for a social message’
Ask her if she feels people might have felt comfortable making such comments given her association with The Kapil Sharma Show, where she is often subjected to tongue-in-cheek remarks, and Singh defends: “When Kapil (Sharma, host) says it, it is full of humour, love and naughtiness. Comedy is meant to be irreverent and it has to underline certain things for the purpose of humour. It is not meant to hurt anybody. Don’t look at a comedy show and think that he is giving a social message.”

My fondest memory is accompanying my mother for the shooting of Ajnabee in Switzerland-Madalsa Sharma

Viral: Mithun Chakraborty's daughter-in-law Madalsa Sharma dances with mom Sheela on popular Justin Timberlake song

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; May 14, 2023)

Madalsa Sharma says she was inspired by her mother Sheela Sharma to step into showbiz. She recounts that as a kid she would watch her mother on the big screen and feel proud. Madalsa, who has become a household name with the TV show Anupamaa, says, “I got into this profession seeing my mother. I have some beautiful memories from my childhood. We are a small close-knit family dad, mom and me. My mom would travel across the globe for work, and I have been with her on some shoots. My fondest memory is accompanying her for the shooting of the film Ajnabee (2001) in Switzerland. I was a kid and enjoyed myself on the set playing and chatting away with the stars and everyone else without any inhibitions (laughs!).”

On Mother’s Day today, the actress says she is proud of her mom for how progressive she is and the fact that she always wants to learn. The mother-daughter duo often makes reels and videos on social media, and they have a blast while creating such content.

“She is today’s mom, and she is very well-versed with social media. We both enjoy making reels for ourselves and our audience,” says Madalsa.

Sharing the valuable advice her mother has given her so far, she says, “My mom has been part of the industry for the last 40 years and she has always guided me. I have taken her suggestions and advice at every point. I hope that I make her feel proud of who I am today as I draw a lot of inspiration from her.”

She further adds, “At this stage of her life, I would love to see her relax a bit, but she does not want that. She is excited to work today just like any youngster. Even now, she shoots regularly.”

A special ice sculpture of Yash Chopra to be unveiled at Ice Palace in Jungfraujoch, Switzerland

Tribute to Indian cinema’s father of romance, Yash Chopra

As The Romantics celebrates Yash Chopra’s legacy, Switzerland’s Jungfrau Railways to unveil filmmaker’s ice sculpture in Jungfraujoch
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; February 14, 2023)

In a Yash Chopra movie, one could be assured of a sweeping romance, melodious songs, and Switzerland. It is said that the late filmmaker visited the country for his honeymoon and was smitten with it, going on to shoot many of his films there.

So, as Smriti Mundhra’s docu-series The Romantics — that celebrates his movies — drops online today, Jungfrau Railways of Switzerland has paid a tribute to the legend. A special ice sculpture of Chopra will be unveiled this month at the Ice Palace in Jungfraujoch.

Remo Kaser, sales director, Jungfrau Railways, reveals, “Yash Chopra has presented the beauty of Switzerland, especially the Jungfrau region, to Indians across the world for generations. Indians who come to Jungfraujoch have spoken to us about how his romantic films have pushed them to visit the region.”

Throughout the month, the Swiss authorities will celebrate the filmmaker’s legacy across the locations where he shot his films, including Chandni (1989) and Darr (1993). Besides the ice sculpture, the authorities will host screenings of the Netflix docu-series, and play his films’ trailers at these venues.

Sachiin Joshi denied nod to visit Switzerland

Rebecca Samervel (THE TIMES OF INDIA; June 30, 2022)

Mumbai: Rejecting actor and businessman Sachiin Joshi’s plea to fly to Switzerland to meet his daughter and resolve certain issues with her boarding school there, a special PMLA court on Monday said that when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) expresses fears of a flight risk, it cannot be overlooked and ignored. “Once the applicant (Joshi) leaves India and if he does not return, the purpose of the trial will frustrate,” special judge MG Deshpande said.

Accused in a money laundering case, Joshi was granted bail in March. In May, the same court rejected Joshi’s plea to travel abroad for six months, observing that granting of such permission will amount to inviting a flight risk.

The court had then noted that during his incarceration Joshi had made various attempts to stay out of jail by citing ill-health.

In Monday’s order, the special judge referred to the email sent by the school and said that the matter could be resolved by making the requisite deposit in its account.

“It has to be noted that the applicant was behind bars and in hospital for a long period. Certainly, he must have made proper arrangements for the education of his daughter,” the judge said.

The judge also said that he could consult the school authorities through video conference. “It cannot be ignored that many times the accused had registered his appearance through a mobile when he was on a stretcher in the hospital. He can similarly resolve this difficulty through a video conference. Regarding emotional support, the applicant can invite his daughter to India for some days by requesting the school management,” the judge said.

Joshi was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on February 14, 2021. The ED had submitted its chargesheet against Joshi, Omkar Group promoters Babulal Varma, Kamal Kishor Gupta and 14 firms associated with them.

Shaadi mein bahut mehnat lag rahi hai-Rahul Vaidya

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 14, 2021)

Singer Rahul Vaidya and actor Disha Parmar are days away from walking the aisle on July 16 and the wedding madness seems to have enveloped them. “The frenzy has made me realise why people marry only once. There are so many things pending. I’m looking into every detail. While we were dating, we never had to do much, things happened smoothly. Shaadi mein bahut mehnat lag rahi hai,” the singer quips. After they made their relationship official, fans created a hashtag #Dishul that crossed a million Instagram posts.

With such attention on their relationship, ask him if it gets a bit too much and he replies, “I don’t take it any other way than being happy about it. Celebrities work all their lives for attention. I do not mind it. It is the most special day of my life and I am glad that so many people want to know about our special day! It doesn’t pressurize or burdened at all.”

The couple hasn’t decided on their honeymoon yet as Vaidya has three music videos to shoot while Parmar has some pending work as well. “We would love to go to Switzerland or Austria but it won’t be possible due to the pandemic. We wouldn’t mind going to Goa and chilling for a week, maybe,” he concludes.

Imagine Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as an out and out comedy and you get Aankh Micholi-Umesh Shukla

Mrunal Thakur's Instagram account
Umesh Shukla describes his current directorial as DDLJ in an out-and-out comic space
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 3, 2020)

The director of Oh My God and 102 Not Out, Umesh Shukla, wrapped up his next, Aankh Micholi, on March 6, just before the nationwide lockdown was announced. He is currently locking the final edit. “We shot for around 15 days in Switzerland, followed by a 40-day schedule in Punjab. We are lucky to have completed the film just in time,” admits Umesh who doesn’t make films only for laughs, but also weave a social message into the narrative. “This one talks of family values, it’s a blend of magic and logic. My films are clean and devoid of darkness because I want families to enjoy them.”

Prod him for details and he says, it’s a comedy in the Yash Chopra world. “Imagine Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as an out-and-out comedy and you get Aankh Micholi,” he quips. It features Abhimanyu Dassani and Mrunal Thakur and the director points out that his hero Abhimanyu showed spark in his comic scenes with Mahesh Manjrekar in Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota and even Mrunal is a blend of histrionics and humour.

The film, produced by Sony Pictures Films India with Umesh’s partner, Ashish Wagh, reunites him with Paresh Rawal after OMG Oh My God and Umesh informs that the two have known each other since 1986. “I started doing backstage work for his plays. Paresh bhai liked my temperament and made me an assistant director. Then, I acted with him in a couple of plays and finally, I directed him in two-three of them. It’s because of his large heart that I am here,” he says humbly.

Paresh was recently elected as the Chairman of National School of Drama. Considering that both come from a theatre background are there any plans of collaborating on NSD. “Yes, recently we discussed changes and improvements in the current structure. He has a bound progressive plan for the future of theatre and I will help him in whatever way possible,” he promises.

Meanwhile, Umesh’s next is a biopic of Ujjwal Nikam who worked on prominent criminal cases and helped prosecute suspects in the 1993 Bombay bombings, the Gulshan Kumar murder case, the Pramod Mahajan murder case, and the 2008 Mumbai attacks, where he was the public prosecutor in Ajmal Kasab’s case. “Yes, my next is on public prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam. The script is almost locked and I will start approaching actors soon, I am very excited,” he asserts, saying that, as a producer too, he will roll with multiple projects by early next year, one of them with Nawazuddin Siddiqui to be directed by Sejal Shah. “It’s an incredible story, you won’t believe it’s true,” he signs off.

Celebrate 25 years of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge by visiting a cinema near you

Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan in DDLJ
To mark its 25th anniversary, Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to have a worldwide release again
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 22, 2020)

A film that shaped romance and pop culture in India — Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) — written and directed by then debutant Aditya Chopra, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, shattered all box office records and is one of the biggest all-time blockbusters in the history of Hindi cinema. It is also the longest-running Hindi film. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, DDLJ is now being re-released across the world.

"DDLJ made people fall in love and has constantly won hearts whenever it has been screened across the world. On its 25th anniversary, we are re-releasing the film so that audiences can celebrate this cult classic on the big screen as we are planning the re-release in several key diaspora and non-diaspora global markets," informed Nelson DSouza, Yash Raj Films, associate vice president-International distribution.

Yash Chopra came to me thrice with Dil To Pagal Hai, but I was young and success had gone to my head-Juhi Chawla

Darr
Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 9, 2020)

Their first collaboration was Chandni, a guest appearance, and Juhi Chawla, who was riding high on the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, was both excited and nervous to be working with her idol Sridevi, senior actor Vinod Khanna, cinematographer Manmohan Singh and of course, the legendary producer-director Yash Chopra. They started out with a photo session in the white outfit she was to wear in the song “Lagi Aaj Saawan Ki Phir Woh Jhadi Hai”, subsequently shot at Chandivali Studio. “It was choreographed by Saroj Khan and I was tense, but fortunately, the shoot went off smoothly. I met Yash ji at a suite in Holiday Inn, which had been converted into a hospital room. One look at me and Yash ji told Pandhari Dada to reduce my makeup. When Dada reasoned that since I was dying in the film, the pronounced dark circles below my eyes were justified, Yash ji told him something, I’ll remember all my life, ‘A heroine should look lovely, no matter what,’” the actress recounts 31 years later.

For the rest of the shoot, an awed Juhi remained practically tongue-tied in the presence of her seniors. “It would be years before I could have a conversation with Vinod ji. It was at the premiere of a film, maybe Dabangg, when I raved to him about what a brilliant actor his son Akshaye was. When he complained that he was too selective, I assured Vinod ji that though his films were few, Akshaye was riveting on screen,” she laughs.

Bring up the subject of Yash ji and she says that what set him apart was that while other makers sketched out the story to her in three lines, she got a full narration of Aaina, produced by him, from scriptwriter Honey Irani. And when he approached her with Darr, he himself narrated the story of obsessive love.

“Since we were flying off to Switzerland for a 25-day schedule, he had Neeta Lulla design my entire wardrobe and got his still photographer to click pictures of me in every outfit in the garden. He’d look at them closely and tell Neeta what worked and what needed to be tweaked. This was when, on other sets, I’d get my costumes on the day of the shoot and they’d be switching and tucking, minutes before I faced the camera,” Juhi shares.

Chandni was followed by Aaina, a story of two sisters, directed by Yash ji’s first assistant, Deepak Sareen. The producer himself never came on the set and only supervised the song “Goriya Re” which had remained incomplete because of unseasonal rains in Lonavla, in the end. “Aaina’s Reema, shy, bespectacled, introverted, was a lot like me. But I guess Yash ji saw something to cast me as the more glamorous Kiran in Darr,” says Juhi. “Darr followed Sri ji’s Chandni and Lamhe, so I had pretty big shoes to fill. I’d look at Adi (Yash ji’s son Aditya Chopra), who was assisting him, after every shot, to gauge how it had gone off from his reaction.”

The schedule in Switzerland was gruelling. She’d be up by 6 am and into the bus an hour later. At the location, there were no vanity vans, so while Shah Rukh Khan changed behind a tree, the curtains were drawn and she was given the bus to dress up, and do her hair and makeup. The shoot was constantly interrupted by showers and everyone would dash into the bus. Work was held up for an hour or two. “We were never bored because we had two great raconteurs in Yash ji and Shah Rukh, who regaled us with stories. Yash ji was always full of laughter, jokes and anecdotes,” Juhi reminisces.

They’d shoot till around 10 pm, drive back to their chalets, tuck into a hearty Punjabi meal, and listen to Pam Chopra sing, before calling it a night. “The next day we were back on the bus for a full day’s shoot, but it was so much fun that it never felt like work,” she marvels.

They stayed in touch even after the film, meeting at Holi bashes and Diwali parties at his home, where Gauri, Shah Rukh and Yash ji’s sons, Adi and Uday, would play cards, squabble and laugh. “Whenever we met, Yash ji would greet me, saying, ‘India’s Most Beautiful, how are you?’ Sri ji was far more beautiful, but I revelled in the warmth of his teasing words,” Juhi smiles.

They did not do another film together. “He came to me thrice with Dil To Pagal Hai, but I was young and success had gone to my head. I didn’t want to play second fiddle to Madhuri (Dixit), though Yash ji assured me that Nisha, too, was a great role. It’s something I’ll regret all my life because he went away too soon,” she rues.

On October 21, 2012, a couple of weeks after their last meeting at Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday bash, when Juhi thought Yash ji wasn’t his usual self, he passed away after contracting dengue. Eight years later, as his production company steps into its golden jubilee year, the ex-Miss India raises a toast to the memory of the King of Romance, who immortalised her as one of his ethereal heroines.

I kept asking Abhishek Bachchan to make his father leave-Bipasha Basu

As told to Ankita Chaurasia (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 17, 2020)

My first shot was for Aakhri Mughal. Both Abhishek Bachchan and I were to make our debuts in the film and I remember how scared I was to have Amitabh Bachchan on the set, watching us give our first take. I kept asking Abhishek to make him leave and he would say exasperatedly, “He is my father, how can I ask him to go!”

I wasn’t sure if I could act when J P Dutta and Jaya Bachchan approached me with the film. I couldn’t say “no” to them. But I’ve to admit, I was really happy when Aakhri Mughal was shelved! Yes, I know I’m a bit of a weirdo, I always have been one.

By the time Ajnabee came along, I was bored with modelling. Vijay Galani wondered if I would meet director duo Abbas and Mustan Burmawalla for a role in their film. I agreed, but was afraid they wouldn’t converse in English. On meeting them, I realised they were scared that a model wouldn’t speak Hindi. But we immediately liked each other. I didn’t watch a lot of films back then, but the suspense-thriller seemed like a very international film to me. And they were shooting in Switzerland, so I signed on thinking that at least I’d get to travel. I went with that intention; not to act.

Luckily, everyone on the set was very fond of me. Abbas bhai, Mustan bhai, Bobby (Deol) and his wife Tanya, Akshay (Kumar) all were very protective of me and got me an entourage of my own. My hairstylist had worked with Manisha Koirala earlier and was quite scandalized by my behaviour. She’d tell me that as an actor I should drink alcohol only in cups so that no one found out and not wear backless dresses. I remember the look on her face when I applied coconut oil on my body and sunbathed as opposed to actresses who slathered themselves with sunscreen and insisted on moving around under an umbrella. In fact, she was aghast when I told everyone that I had a boyfriend.

My first scene in the film was the one when neighbours Priya (Kareena Kapoor) and Sonia (my character) meet for the first time while jogging and strike up a conversation. It went off really well and my directors told me I was a natural actor. And I thought to myself, “Wow, so this is acting…I can do it!” Despite it being a negative role in a film way ahead of its time, it still fetched me a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

YRF Film Festivals to be held across the US, UK, Australia, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Switzerland?

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
Aditya Chopra plans a global celebration for studio's golden jubilee with film festivals lined up in US, UK, Russia and Switzerland
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; August 31, 2020)

The countdown to the golden jubilee celebration of Yash Raj Films has begun. While head honcho Aditya Chopra is expected to announce the slate of movies for the coming year on Yash Chopra's birth anniversary on September 27, he plans to take the global audience down memory lane with the studio's past blockbusters. It is heard that the suits at the production house are charting out a plan to conduct YRF Film Festivals across the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Switzerland, and several other countries.

"The festival will showcase iconic movies made under the banner, including Aditya's directorial debut Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge [1995], and Yash ji's swan song Jab Tak Hai Jaan [2012]. Since Yash ji gave the industry some priceless songs, radio concerts are being planned where the original artistes will revisit these gems," reveals a source.

The on-ground teams are working out the logistics, given the current restrictions, and a final call will be taken soon. Chopra is apparently keen to have a large-scale promotion next year too when the films announced under the YRF 50 project will be ready for release.

Ensuring smaller units is going to be a huge challenge-Anees Bazmee

Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 7, 2020)

Bollywood hasn’t been at work since March-end, when the nationwide Coronavirus lockdown was enforced. But slowly, things are changing. While actor Akshay Kumar is set to start shooting for Bellbottom in the UK, others are likely to follow suit from September onward with safety norms in place, one such being working with smaller units.

Director Anees Bazmee says it’s “not going to be easy.” “Pruning the crew size and working with a small-ish team is going to be a huge challenge. How do you do it? Where do you start? Nowadays, even actors come with a big entourage,” he says, while recalling how for the shoot of Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998), a unit of just 40-45 people — including actors, their teams and the crew — had travelled to Switzerland.

“Woh zamaana hi kuch aur tha,” Bazmee says, adding, “We all managed to work beautifully with a smaller team. But things are different now. At any given point, there are so many people on the set. Also, with newer technology and ambitious storytelling style, there’s no option but to have more people on the set.” He explains, “For instance, earlier, if we would have three people — including the DoP — with the camera, we now have three to four cameras and five to six people with each one of them.”

However, Bazmee admits that ensuring a smaller unit is “going to affect a lot of people badly.” “If you have to retain just 65 out of 200 technicians, imagine how many of them would have no work. Since the real economic impact of the lockdown will be felt even more in the coming months, things will become extremely difficult. But, you have to adhere to the guidelines,” says the filmmaker, who will restart work on his next, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, later this year.

Just a day after Monali Thakur teased her fans with a new music video on social media, the Sawaar Loon singer told us that she had tied the knot with her Switzerland-based boyfriend Maik Richter in 2017. Interestingly, Maik also features in the music video. Monali says, “I haven’t made it official on social media yet, but people had already guessed it. A couple of times when my ring was mistakenly visible in my Instagram photos, a lot of people commented asking if it was my wedding ring. That said, Maik and I have successfully been able to hide our marriage for three years!”

The singer, who is currently in Switzerland, living with Maik and his family, says the reason why the couple didn’t make it public was that they didn’t have a conventional wedding and had been looking for an appropriate occasion to get married publicly. “The news of my marriage will come as a shock to many as none of my industry friends were aware or invited. We kept delaying the ceremony and announcement and three years just passed by,” says Monali, adding, “Mujhe pata hai bahot gali padne wali hai logon se, but I think when we have our wedding ceremony and invite people for the celebrations, they won’t be upset anymore.” Although the couple doesn't have a date in mind for the public ceremony yet, Monali says they will definitely think about it once things are better.

Maik, who is a sports enthusiast and restaurateur, fell in love with Monali almost instantly. “I met him during my trip to Switzerland and we clicked instantly,” says Monali. She also adds that she and Maik share a common love. “He loves food and, being a Bong, I love food, too,” she laughs. Ask her what Maik loves about her and she replies, “He loves the fact that I am an independent person.”

Amidst #CoronaPandemic, it’s love in the Alps for singer Monali Thakur

Monali left for Switzerland to be with her boyfriend, Maik Richter, before the nationwide lockdown was announced

On March 13, a few weeks before the nationwide Coronavirus lockdown was announced, singer Monali Thakur left for Switzerland to be with her Swiss-German boyfriend, Maik Richter. The two had first met when Monali was on a vacation with her gal pals in 2016.

Talking to BT from Lauterbrunnen, the Moh Moh Ke Dhaage singer says, “I figured that there would be a lockdown with the way things were going. I wanted to first take care of my family in India, so I stocked up on provisions, medicines, etc for them and then left for Switzerland.”

Elaborating on how she is spending time against the beautiful backdrop of the Swiss Alps, Monali shares, “We are not homebound like how it is in India. Though we do not have any restaurants, pubs or public areas open except for groceries, banks, hospitals, postal services etc, we can step out. So, I’m biking all day, and I love cycling through the mountains by myself. It is so amazing, being amidst nature. When I’m not outdoors, I record songs in the home studio here. I’m also cooking for my better half.”

About the dishes she is cooking up for her boyfriend, Monali says, “I’m having fun experimenting in the kitchen. I cook a lot of Indian dishes, like dal, which my extended family loves. Maik is also fond of Indian spices, but the ones that are available here have a firang touch. So, we are missing our Indian spices.” She adds, “Maik’s family has a big farmhouse here. Since it’s in the mountain region, it’s peaceful.”

So, are there plans for a wedding this summer? “You never know, it could be next summer. I’ll definitely share more on that whenever it happens,” she signs off.

The skies are so clear that I can see the lights all the way to Cuffe Parade-Juhi Chawla

Juhi Chawla recounts how Coronavirus pandemic cut short her trip to Austria, prompting hurried return to Mumbai with husband and son; informs daughter is in Uganda with her grandparents
Ankita Chaurasia (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 3, 2020)

Around this time of the year, Juhi Chawla is usually in Kolkata, cheering her Boys in Purple (team Knight Riders) from the stands while anxiously watching the scoreboard. But this IPL cricket season, the actress and franchise co-owner is locked down in her Mumbai home. “Unless the situation improves and travel restrictions around the world are lifted, we can’t expect matches to start,” she reasons.

Juhi’s Austrian family holiday with husband Jay Mehta and children Jahnavi and Arjun turned into an event straight out of a film as the Coronavirus scare spread across Europe. “Austria partially closed off its borders soon after we left. Ditto Switzerland. So, we returned to our London home where my in-laws joined us,” she recounts.

By then, India had started restricting incoming international flights and a lockdown-like situation seemed imminent. “So, we decided to fly back. Apna ghar, apna ghar hota hai aur apna desh, apna desh hota hai,” Juhi says emphatically, asserting that she didn’t want to be anywhere else but home during these trying times. “We approached the High Commission of India and they helped us reach Mumbai safely. All the racing and the dodging made it seem like we were shooting for a thriller.”

Upon her return to the city, the actress faced yet another challenge. “Some of our staff comes from outside and it quickly became apparent that they wouldn’t be able to continue reporting to work. So, we re-organised everything and shut off some of the rooms for better management of the rest. Thankfully, I have people in the kitchen, otherwise it would have been a disaster. We are functioning with skeletal staff and one in-house driver,” the actress informs.

Juhi’s businessman-husband is with her, along with son Arjun, while daughter Jahnavi is in Uganda with her grandparents. “She studies in the US and they have to attend online classes. Being in India would mean staying up all night for lectures. At least the time difference is not so huge there,” she explains.

Arjun, who will appear for his standard 10 exams this year, is continuing with his studies, too, in case the school suddenly decides to hold them. “He’s also watering the plants, now that the gardener can’t come in. There’s also a lot of fiddling around with gadgets,” she says, going on to enquire if the person on the other end of the line is using earphones or speaking directly into the handset. Sounding disappointed when told it’s the latter, Juhi says she’s trying to stay away from mobile phones as much as possible.

Meanwhile, with the family priests unable to come in, Jay and Juhi have started conducting the morning pooja themselves, beginning the day with prayers. “It’s calming; perhaps this is God’s way of bringing us closer together,” muses the actress, who has also started doing riyaaz again. “I was a dedicated student to begin with, but as life got busier, I gave up music. My teacher prodded me to start again and I have started taking online classes.”

She’s tuning out negative news so it doesn’t add to her anxiety, and is reveling in the positives instead. “It’s not so hot in Mumbai anymore. Normally, by this time, you couldn’t do without the air-conditioner. The skies are so clear that I can see the lights all the way to Cuffe Parade from my Malabar Hill apartment,” she exults, adding that she is having methi seeds, soaked overnight, every morning to pamper her tresses. Is it working? “If I come out of this lockdown with thick, lustrous hair, you’d know,” she chuckles.

The last seven eight days of my life have been crazy-Juhi Chawla

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 22, 2020)

After a trip to Florence, Italy, last month, Juhi Chawla and her family flew to Austria, earlier this month, as her daughter, wanted to spend her spring break skiing. Right before they decided, Chawla asked her family if they should be travelling as many cases of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) were reported around the world. “But everyone insisted, so we landed in Zurich, Switzerland, on March 12,” she shares.

“After reaching Austria and skiing for a day, we learnt that Austria will be shutting the resorts by March 16 as they found a few people infected in the country. Meanwhile, some of Jay’s (Jay Mehta, Juhi’s husband) other friends joined us, so we decided to stay for two days and then leave. But the next day, while we were on the mountain, we heard that the resort would close that very day and if we don’t leave, we would be stuck there. So, we packed and left for Zurich as we couldn’t get any flights to London (UK),” says the actor.

They stayed the night in Zurich, flew to London the next day and hoped to stay there for a while. But a day later, they heard that India would be closing its borders too, so they had to either leave the UK in two days or stay there till March 31, when the situation would be reviewed.

Chawla says, “Once again, we were panicking as I am the only Indian national and the rest of my family has OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) cards. I have never seen this kind of scenario, where whichever country we left was shutting its borders. The last seven-eight days of my life have been crazy. We were just running from one place to the next. In the UK, we applied for visas to be fast tracked and the officials were kind and helpful. There were other family members and friends, too, who needed to get back to India. On the flight, we filled a form giving out details of the places we had travelled to in the past month. At the Mumbai airport, officials checked every form and as we had been to Europe, stamped us - Home Quarantine!”

They were later whisked off to a doctor, who explained to a group of similarly stamped people, how to conduct themselves at home over the next fortnight. Chawla is thankful they managed to return to India on time as things are serious back home.

Praising the government’s efforts to tackle this outbreak, she says, “What was clear was that our government is trying hard to help everyone and protect us as far as possible. Huge respect for all the officials on duty.”
