Shefali Jariwala passes away at 42; friends, colleagues shocked at her untimely demise

SHEFALI
JARIWALA
DIES AT 42

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; June 29, 2025)

Shefali Jariwala, best known as the Kaanta Laga girl, passed away at the age of 42 on June 27 in Mumbai. She reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to a hospital by her husband, Parag Tyagi. She was declared dead on arrival. A post-mortem was later conducted at the hospital.

Rising to fame in 2002 with the music video Kaanta Laga, she later appeared in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and participated in reality shows like Bigg Boss 13 and Nach Baliye 5. Known for her candour, she had also spoken openly about battling epilepsy and mental health issues.

The news of Shefali Jariwala’s sudden demise has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. Her friends and colleagues are “shocked and saddened” by the untimely passing of the actress.

I wish spent more time and made more memories: Mika Singh
Mika Singh, who had worked with Shefali in the music video Hoton Pe Bas, said, “Life is so unpredictable. I knew this beautiful soul for over 25 years. We did countless shows together, crossed paths at many events, yet never truly got the chance to work closely. Then in 2020, Shefali called me and said, ‘Let’s do a song.’ We finally made it happen. Now I sit here thinking, I wish we had done more. Spent more time and made more memories. This has made me realize life is short and we must keep in touch with our loved ones… because sometimes, we don’t get a second chance.”

On set, she was always cheerful and down-to-earth: Surbhi Shukla
Shefali appeared in the TV show Shaitani Rasmein last year. Her co-actor Surbhi Shukla said, “I’m still finding it hard to believe she’s gone. On set, she was always cheerful and down-to-earth. At the same time, she was very hardworking, often quietly sitting in a corner, going over her lines with full dedication. She was fit, committed and full of life. She was very kind, warm and a great co-actor. What I remember most is her at our 50-episode celebration — dancing, singing, and laughing. That happy image is what stays with me now.”

Her absence will be deeply felt: Rahul Vaidya
I had known her for 15 years — we had performed together at a few live shows. She supported me during Bigg Boss. The last time we spoke was a year ago. We had even discussed collaborating on a song. She was a kind-hearted and fun-loving soul. Her absence will be deeply felt.

Shefali wanted to adopt a child once
Earlier in an interview with us, Shefali had spoken about her plans to adopt a child. However, post the pandemic, she had said, “I have lost too many close ones in this period, which has made me realize that life is fragile. I am scared to become a parent now, but Parag is ready. I believe you should bring home your baby only when you are ready and confident. I have just taken a step back and will wait until I feel confident to take that step in life.”

Actor Shefali Jariwala, widely known as the “Kaanta Laga girl” for her iconic early 2000s music video, died at the age of 42 on June 27. Mumbai Police have confirmed her passing.

“Her body was found at her residence in Andheri. The police received the information at 1 am (early hours of Saturday). Her body has been sent to Cooper Hospital for postmortem. The cause of her death is not yet clear,” police told PTI on Saturday.

She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in suburban Mumbai by her husband, actor Parag Tyagi, and three others around 11.15 pm on Friday, where she was declared dead. Parag was seen leaving the hospital but did not speak to the media till the time of going to press. The cause of her death remains unclear, though some sources suggest she may have suffered a cardiac arrest.

Shefali, also known for her dance numbers in films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and Hudugaru (2011), was earlier married to music composer Harmeet Singh. They separated in 2009 after five years of marriage. She married Parag in 2014. They had no children.

KIKU SHARDA
The actor-comedian was among the first to post: “Of course, it’s a shocker for all. Working with her on a couple of shows, she was so full of life and that big smile on her face. I mean, it’s unbelievable for all of us, the entire fraternity.”

VINDU DARA SINGH
”I worked with her on a show. She was a livewire on stage, no fatigue even when performing live for long stretches. Of late, she was worried about her father who was not keeping well. But Parag, as she always said, was her source of strength.”

SUYYASH RAI
“Parag and Shefali have been close to us. Shefali was among the most pleasant and happy people around. Whenever we got time to catch up at parties or gatherings, she was the brightest and happiest to be with.”

SHARAD MALHOTRA
Shefali worked with Sharad on a web series Ratri ke Yatri. He says, “She was among the best of co-stars. I remember during the promotions, she praised me as a good co-actor, and it was mutual admiration for the person and performer she was.”

MIKA SINGH
The singer wrote on Insta, “I’m deeply shocked, saddened, and feeling a heavy heart... Our beloved star and my dearest friend has left us. Still can’t believe it. You will always be remembered for your grace, smile, and spirit. Om Shanti.”

In an old interview clip that is going viral on social media, Shefali said, “There can only be one Kaanta Laga girl... and that is me. I love it. I want to be known as the Kaanta Laga girl till the day I die.”

It feels nice to come down from an XL to size M-Kishwer M Rai

Feels nice to come down from an XL to size M
Navya Kharbanda (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 6, 2023)

Kishwer M Rai recently shared pictures and videos from her weight loss journey on Instagram. The actor, who gave birth to her son, Nirvair Rai, in August 2021, was initially not too bothered by the pregnancy weight. But with time, she realized she had to get fitter.

“I was enjoying my motherhood journey, so I didn’t care much about the weight. In fact, I featured in three TV shows — Fanaa - Ishq Main Marjawan, Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan season 4 and Dear Ishq,” she tells us, adding, “But then, there was a time when I couldn’t even sit on the floor...I had never seen myself like that (with extra weight). It took me some time and now I am back to being medium-sized. It just feels nice!”

In April this year, Kishwer began following a strict workout regime. Last week, she shared a video on Instagram of her transformed self, writing, “Still a long way to go”. The 42-year-old says, “I lost 10 kilos, right after my delivery. The video I shared was after [I had lost] an additional four kilos in the last two months. While the weight loss hasn’t been much, I am more concerned about the inch loss. The waist size I used to wear was 34; now I have come down to 31.”

Kishwer credits her husband, singer-actor Suyyash Rai, for constantly motivating her. “We both put on a lot of weight when I was pregnant (during Coronavirus lockdown). For him, it’s very easy to lose. But that’s not the case with me. Once I put it on, it’s very difficult to get rid of it. He kept motivating me, saying, ‘Don’t worry, you’ll get there’,” she shares.

You feel people are judging you if you can’t feed your baby-Kishwer Merchant Rai

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 6, 2021)

As a first-time mother, actor Kishwer Merchant Rai is always overwhelmed by every little move by her newborn, and admits that embracing motherhood has been a roller coaster ride.

Kishwer welcomed her first child, a baby boy, Nirvair, with her husband Suyyash Rai on August 27. “Every time, I see his face, I forget about all the things,” she tells us.

Ask her about the story behind picking the name, and she says that it came to her one night. “I used to have sleepless nights when Suyyash had Coronavirus, as he used to be in another room. One night, while listening to Ek Onkar, I messaged him the name, and he loved it.”

At the moment, Kishwer is on a road to recovery after the C-section delivery. Opening up about it, the 40-year-old says, “A woman’s body goes through so much in these nine months, and then comes a C-section. Then, you have to feed the baby, and there is no production of milk on the first three days. You get frustrated, on top of it, you feel people are judging you ki breast milk nahin de pa rahe ho.”

She adds: “After delivery, you can go into postpartum depression. That’s why it is important to be happy, but how? Because if you can't do anything for your child, you can’t be happy. But everything is fine now, I am back home, eating well and he is also fine.”

Amid these happy emotions, there are some overwhelming moments, too. “If I’m cradling him and he is still crying, I get emotional. I get anxious. There are many things which I will learn as I explore motherhood,” she concludes.

Controversial TV show Pehredaar Piya Ki goes off air

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; August 30, 2017)

Despite being re-designated to a late night time slot of 10.30 pm following the furore that raged around its plot of a 10-year-old boy marrying an 18-year old girl, Pehredaar Piya Ki (PPK) is in the news again - but this time for being yanked off air abruptly! The television industry was abuzz, when the show did not air in the new time slot on August 28. The channel, on which it aired, released a statement, confirming the new development, “Effective from August 28, 2017, we are pulling off our programme, Pehredaar Piya Ki, from television. While we understand that the decision to end this serial will be disappointing to those whose creative energies are vested in it, namely, its crew and cast, we (as a channel) are convinced that we will be better served by focusing instead on developing viewer interest in our upcoming shows. We are grateful to all the artistes, producers and fans of our shows and request you to graciously support the viewership of our new ventures.“

It was learnt that the makers, Shashi and Sumeet Mittal, had stopped shooting the show since August 28. The decision to end the show was taken by the producers after the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) asked the channel to move the show from its 8.30 pm slot to the 10.30 pm slot. The timings were changed when an online petition demanding a ban on the show was forwarded to Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani, which she forwarded to the BCCC on August 16.

What was found objectionable about PPK's story is that it showed a marriage between a 10-year-old boy and an 18-yearold girl. According to reports, the petition had also listed out certain scenes as objectionable: A 10-year-old impressionable boy ('piyaa') was shown caressing and stalking a lady who's almost twice his age, and filling 'sindoor' in her 'maang'. It was telecast at prime time. Imagine the kind of influence it can have on the viewers' mindset. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be influenced by such shows.“

However, Sumeet Mittal has always maintained that his show did not have any objectionable content. In an interview, before the show went off air, he said, “The show is about the hardships faced by a little boy. While we respect the decision taken by the BCCC, pushing the show to the 10.30 pm slot has forced us to discontinue. It defeats our purpose of airing the show for family audience at 8.30 pm. The audiences in smaller towns won't be up till 10.30 pm to watch our show.“

He had also dismissed reports of the show planning a time leap. “Without establishing the young boy's story, we did not want to take a time leap just to hold on to our viewers. We would rather return with a new concept and a brand new show and work with the same actors all over again,“ Sumeet added.

Despite the odds, the producers are not bitter about the show ending prematurely. However, they are saddened by how people termed it regressive without even watching it. Sumeet continues, “Our show was not really high on the rating ladder for it to become a topic of discussion for the entire nation. A section of internet users, who had not watched the show, started this massive debate and decided to write a petition asking for a ban. These people were not even our real viewers.“

In its one-month-10-day-run, PPK has only been in the centre of controversies. While social media was raging against it, there were criticisms within the television industry , too. One of the first to voice his displeasure was actor Karan Wahi.

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 30, 2017)

Alittle over a month after its July 17 launch on Sony, TV drama Pehredaar Piya Ki has been pulled off air in light of online backlash surrounding its theme. The show revolved around an 18-year-old girl Diya (Tejaswi Prakash Wayangankar) who, compelled by circumstances, marries nine-year-old Ratan Singh (played by Affan Khan), a hotel heir. On his deathbed, Ratan’s father Maan Singh tells Divya’s family that the couple should remarry to make the alliance legal when his son turns 21.

However, viewers found the concept unpalatable and voiced their disapproval online, followed by a petition addressed to Union Cabinet Minister of Textiles and Information and Broadcasting (Additional Charge), Smriti Irani, demanding a ban on the show. The petition got more than a lakh signatures, forcing the channel to hold a press conference at which the show’s producers, Shashi and Sumeet Mittal, clarified their stand.

While they were reportedly in discussion for the late night slot of 10 pm for the show, the channel, over the weekend, decided to pull it off air to avoid further controversies. The channel confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “Effective August 28, we are pulling our programme, Pehredaar Piya Ki, off TV. While we understand that the decision to end this serial will be disappointing to those whose creative energies are vested in it, namely, its crew and cast, we (as a channel) are convinced that we will be better served by focusing instead on developing viewer interest in our upcoming, new shows.”

Meanwhile, Sumeet Mittal told Mirror that he has already moved on to a new show. “The idea now is to create a story that is pure entertainment and doesn’t touch on controversies. We’d rather focus on entertaining the audience rather than handle internet-based issues,” he said, adding that people only watched the promos and misunderstood the concept. “I would have loved it if the social media audience had watched the show before reacting to it because that would’ve been a fair opinion. It is okay to judge if the content is good or bad.

The base of this controversy was rumours and that’s not a healthy sign.” What happened to the interim plan to shift the show from primetime to a late-night slot? “The online petition had gone to Broadcasting Content Complaints Council, the body that looks after content-related complaints. The jury decided that even though the show is not promoting anything wrong, it would be prudent to shift it to a 10 pm slot in light of the petition and also since the show involves a child actor. However, we knew that the slot wouldn’t do justice to the show’s plot so we decided to end it and work on a new one,” Mittal explains. Incidentally, the channel had received flak two weeks ago for pulling the daily soap Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi off air with just a fourday notice to the team.

Producer Siddharth P Malhotra
I’m not in favour of abrupt endings. A producer’s contract mentions a notice period to facilitate the story’s smooth end. Any show with a good story should be aired but only till you’re honest to it. Pehredaar is not my kind of a show but the fact that it ran for a while means there was an audience for it.

TV producer Ravindra Gautam
It is unfortunate that the show was shut without notice to its team. But I don’t think the broadcaster or the producer needs to be blamed in this case. It is unfair on the part of the viewers to criticise a show so much as to file a petition against it. This is lynching of freedom of expression.

Badho Bahu producer Dipti Kalwani
I don’t think most of the people who objected to the show even bothered to watch it. They thought they were being righteous. If the show had a 10-year-old girl falling in love with an older man, no one would have objected. People think they are being fair but I think they are being sexist.

Pehredaar... actor Suyyash Rai
I was about to return in the story so it’s a shocker to me. It’s sad but I’m sure that it was a well thought out decision. I remember something similar happening a few years ago, when a channel was shut overnight. More than us, it is sad for the spot dada, light men. Their homes run because of daily soaps.

Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; August 30, 2017)

It was announced yesterday that Pehredaar Piya Ki, one of the most controversial shows on Indian television in recent times, will go off air. This decision comes days after Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) decided to change the show’s slot from prime time to late night. The drama that revolved around an 18-year-old woman getting married to a nine- year- old boy received flak for its objectionable content.

Speaking to mid-day, producer Shashi Sumeet Mittal said that the decision to pull the plug on the show wasn’t taken abruptly. “It was a mutual decision between the channel and us,” she said.

Earlier this month, I&B Minister Smriti Irani had written to the BCCC, asking them to review the content of the show. Mittal, however, denies that the I&B Ministry had any role to play in the show being taken off air. “We didn’t have any pressure from anyone. In fact, after watching the show, the Ministry had allowed us to continue with it as they didn’t find anything objectionable.” She added, “We had written the show keeping the prime time audience in mind. After the show was pushed to the 10.30 pm slot, we realised it wasn’t garnering the response we wanted. So we decided to pull it off air.”

Mittal said that they will return with a new show. “We are in the process of writing the show. We want a prime time slot and don’t want to get into another controversy this time.”

All the behind-the-scenes action from the star-studded Annual Colors Party

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 14, 2016)

You can be certain that wherever the Bigg Boss contestants' head, they take their ego clashes with them. Three months after the show's finale aired, former inmate Mandana Karimi walked into the Colors annual bash with producer-boyfriend Gaurav Gupta and looked right through the other leggy women who had recently shared a roof with her.

Kishwer Merchant and Suyyash Rai also arrived together, wearing their hearts on their sleeves and didn't stir from each others' sides. The same cannot be said for former housemates-turned lovers-turned strangers, Armaan Kohli and Tanishaa Mukerji.

Tanishaa who made an eye-catching statement in a tangerine, two-tone gown with cutouts walked out as soon as her ex walked in. This didn't bother Armaan who was generous with his jadoo ki jhappis, hugging everyone from Gautam Gulati who looked like a green horn in a velvet suit to actor-host Arjun Kapoor who seemed happy to re-unite with the Khatron Ke Khiladi team. In fact, Armaan was the last celeb to leave the venue in the wee hours, in high spirits after shaking a leg.

The annual bash celebrating completion of eight successful years for the channel was a star-studded event hosted at a suburban five star. Varun Dhawan was the first to arrive and was immediately branded with a Brand Ambassador Award. On his way out he bumped into Anil Kapoor who is always willing to do a “My name is Lakhan“ on the red carpet. The two looked stylishly similar in navy blue checked suits and seemed to be telling each other “Check me out mate!“ Aditi Rao Hydari in a fuchsia gown and Huma Qureshi in an LBD made smashing hit-and-miss appearances. TV Czarina Ekta Kapoor arrived on time, hand-in-hand with actress Anita Hassanandani. Anita's actor-entrepreneur hubby Rohit Reddy tagged along with Jeetendra.

We got a jhalak of Madhuri Dixit too who was escorted by hubby Dr Sriram Nene and spent time chatting with co-judge Karan Johar whose shoes glittering in pink and gold sequins stole the spotlight from all the high heels around. No wonder Arjun stuck to tamer tan leather shoes.

Ayushmann Khurrana dropped by late in the night after wrapping up another SoBo event featuring Ranveer Singh but Malaika Arora Khan, currently in the news for her split with hubby Arbaaz Khan, gave the bash a miss. Ditto for Salman Khan and Kapil Sharma who has broken away to launch his own show on a rival channel.

So it was no Comedy Night but still a Colorful one!

I love my 'Emraan Hashmi' tag-Prince Narula

Saloni Bhatia (BOMBAY TIMES; January 25, 2016)

After spending more than three months inside the house, Prince Narula was crowned the winner of Bigg Boss while Rishabh Sinha was declared the first runner-up.Prince tells us about his plans for the Rs 35 lakh prize money, his equation with the housemates and the 16 kilos that he has shed in the house. Excerpts:

WILL BE GOING TO THE GOLDEN TEMPLE TO THANK GOD FOR THE WIN
“I won't take a break. I'll start working soon. I will be going to the Golden Temple and Nakodar Sahib to thank God. I went there before participating in Mr Punjab, Roadies, Splitsvilla and Bigg Boss. I think wohi lucky charm hai (that is my lucky charm). My mom and dad are my good luck charms, too. I am also planning a vacation with Kishwer Merchant and Suyyash Rai before their wedding,“ he tells us. Ask him his plans for the prize money and he says, “I have donated Rs 5 lakh to Salman Khan's Being Human. I will buy something for my dad with what's left.“

I WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THE HOUSE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TIMES
“I played the game in such a way that I wouldn't get evicted from the house before the finale. I knew that I won't have to leave because of lack of audience votes. Even the contestants were scared and didn't nominate me. In these three-and-a-half months, I was in the danger zone just thrice, and I was made the captain of the house three times, which is an achievement,“ he smiles.

I WILL BE SPENDING A LOT OF TIME WITH NORA
“Everyone thinks that the relationships formed on reality shows are fake. When we came out of Splitsvilla, Anukhi and I lost touch. Then I came to Bigg Boss and met Yuvika (Chaudhary). I told her that I liked her, but she asked me to focus on the show, and I backed off thinking that I was forcing her. After she left, Nora came and brought a lot of positivity. We actually have a connection. Yuvika is a good friend now. I will spend a lot of time with Nora so that we get to know each other. Falling in love is quite easy when you are in the house, but you get to know a person only when you step out. Nora and I are alike in quite a lot of ways,“ he says.

He was also given the title of 'Emraan Hashmi' for serial kissing on television. “I love this tag. I used to kiss people when they performed well, and even when they didn't. I am happy with the tag,“ he adds.

WILL FOCUS ON ACTING NOW
After his reality show streak, Prince says he wants to take up acting. “I will start trying for films. Before signing this reality series, I had signed two shows, so I will take them up,“ he says.

I CREDIT THIS WIN TO KISHWER
What sealed Prince's place in the finale was the task where Kishwer and Prince had to decide who would exit the house between them. Kishwer sacrificed her place for Prince. “I think they only showed a small chunk. We had decided that she should exit by taking Rs 15 lakh and I would win the Rs 35 lakh prize money. Kishwer told me that I had an advantage because I had won reality shows before this and have a young fan following. I credit my win to Kishwer. When it was announced that I won the show, I gave the trophy to her. That decision worked for both of us. But Kishwer was the toughest competitor,“ he adds.

I USED TO HATE SUYYASH AND KISHWER INITIALLY
In the first episode, when the contestants were being paired, no one wanted to pair up with Prince. He elaborates, “I told them, 'tum logon ne galti kari thi ki bina jaane judge kar liya' (you people committed a mistake by judging me without knowing me). All those people knew each other because they belong to the industry. When they saw me performing the tasks, they were scared. “Initially, I used to hate Suyyash and Kishwer because Suyyash Rai asked her not to pair up with me, but inside the house, we bonded really well because we belong to Chandigarh and Kishwer was like a sister.“
