Sonu Nigam, who will be performing in Ahmedabad later this month as part of his ongoing multi-city tour, is eagerly looking forward to the experience. He shares, “I have a very inexplicable connection with Gujarat. Wherever in the world I go, Gujaratis flock to my shows in huge numbers. Some of my closest friends are Gujaratis. Thus, coming to Ahmedabad with a special show like Satrangi Re is a great feeling. It’s like coming back home. I am a big foodie. Gujarati food is delicious, and my favourite is the undhiyu sent to me by Anand Pandit ji every year.”
‘AI gave me the opportunity to sing with my guru’
Recently, his AI-powered live duet with Mohammed Rafi at a concert created a lot of buzz. Talking about it, Sonu says, “The idea came to me when we were working on the show flow for my US tour. I thought I would give myself this opportunity to sing with my guru, and what better song than my own (Kal Ho Naa Ho) for the duet?”
He adds, “I was crying when I sang the part that was meant to be transformed into Rafi sahab’s voice through AI. And can you believe it, I enacted Rafi sahab for the AI to get his mannerisms right.”
‘I have been singing Gujarati songs for a long time’
Sonu, who has performed in numerous cities in Gujarat, tells us, “Over the last three decades, I have made innumerable trips to Gujarat. Gujaratis have literally seen me growing up. In fact, no one expresses their love for me the way Gujaratis do it, and I love it. The men, women physically hug me, hold me as if I’m their own. They feel they kind of own me, and I respect that kind of feeling. Very fortunate are those who are loved like this.”
The versatile singer, who has also sung for Gujarati films (Udi Re from Vickida No Varghodo and Ishq Rang from Romance Complicated, to name a few), adds, “I have been singing Gujarati songs for a very long time now. I love my recent song Misri (title track of Misri). I understand Gujarati quite a lot, so I don’t have any problem singing in the language.”
‘There are excellent, average, and mediocre artistes in all eras’
Asked about the biggest changes he has noticed in the music industry over the years, he says, “The music business changes, of course, but not much changes artistically. There are excellent, average, and mediocre artistes in all eras.”
How can artistes make their songs stand out in an era of reels and viral fame, where ‘views’ matter a lot? “Honestly, I am not an expert on this. I believe in doing my job honestly and leaving the rest to God,” he says. And how has he managed to remain popular with every age group? “Because I am God’s chosen one!” he quips.
He adds, “It’s a very good time for indie music and artistes. The market has opened up due to various music streaming platforms. The concert scenario in India has also improved drastically. It is more organised now. So, international artistes are more comfortable and surer about performing here. They know they will be treated professionally.”
‘Karan Johar and Varun Dhawan reintroduced Bijuria to the world’
His song Bijuria was recreated recently for the film Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, and Sonu enjoyed it. He says, “The younger generation wasn’t aware of the glory of Bijuria. Karan Johar and Varun (Dhawan) reintroduced my song to the world. Today, three generations groove to it. The kind of reels and responses I have seen on social media — it’s astonishing.”
‘Kirtidan Gadhvi’s love for me is humbling’
Sonu shares a special bond with Kirtidan Gadhvi, one of Gujarat’s most loved singers. In an interview with us last year, Gadhvi said that they would love to collaborate someday. Sonu says, “Kirtidan Gadhvi’s love for me is humbling. He is a fantastic artiste and an even better man. I love him and his family. We have decided that he will take me to Dwarka and a few other pilgrimage sites in Gujarat when our schedules are a bit relaxed.”

Reflecting on the immense popularity he enjoys, Rohit says, “It is so easy to be swayed by all the love that you get on Instagram, but the real deal is when you meet people in person, I absolutely love it. When people give you a hug, and you see a fan crying because you’ve given them a hug – those moments stay with you. Every single time that happens, it feels like a scene from a film.”
Looking back at his journey, he says, “When I came to Mumbai at 15, I literally knew no one and had no idea what I was doing. Starting from there to wherever I’ve reached today and the kind of love I enjoy, I don’t think it’s something that I would give up for anything.”
While he has shared screen space with many renowned actors, there's one leading lady he is crazy about. Rohit shares, “It’s a known fact, but whoever does not know this, I am completely obsessed with Vidya Balan ma’am. She’s incredible. I think she’s a beautiful human being and a phenomenal actor. I’m actively, every single day, manifesting a project that I get to work with her on.”
But behind the popularity is immense hard work, and it does get tough sometimes. The actor says, “There have been times when I felt, why am I putting myself through this when it’s just easier to not. But then I remind myself why I started out doing this, and I know this sounds like such an Instagram quote – ‘Remind yourself of why you started’, but honestly, that’s what’s helped me.”
‘I am fascinated by people who are ambitious’
Rohit made the term ‘future wife’ in Mismatched a viral trend. When asked what are the traits his future wife needs to have, he replied, “I think ambition is very, very important to me. Not just my future wife, but any person I meet and anyone I talk to – I am really fascinated by people who are ambitious. Also, she should be respectful, and if she has long hair, it’ll be a bonus.”
‘I’m single’
Ask him about his relationship status, and he says, “I would really like it if my fans stop thinking that I date every single actress I work with, or every girl I am seen with. It’s crazy! Contrary to many different opinions on the internet, I’m single.”
Rohit’s sweet newspaper nostalgia
Talking about being excited to himself in the newspapers, Rohit shared an anecdote from his school days.
He said, “When we were in school, we would see photos of toppers with their percentiles published in newspapers. For us, that was like the biggest thing ever... like you have arrived in life if your photograph is in the newspapers. The school would make cutouts of the articles and put them up on notice boards. And I would say to myself…one day I’ll be there. So now, every time I see myself on the pages of a newspaper, I secretly want to take a cutout and go back to school and pin it up on those notice boards.”

Major film distributors squeeze rivals in fight for box-office gold

Big players seen using unjust tactics to deprive smaller peers of shows in single-screen theatres, multiplexes, say experts

At a time when box office performance has become increasingly hard to predict, the battle over pre-theatrical releases in the Hindi film industry has intensified, as major distributors use unfair tactics to limit smaller rivals from securing enough shows in single-screen theatres and multiplexes, trade analysts, producers and independent distributors told ET.
In recent months, reports of tussles over screen and show allocations have surfaced among distributors of major releases such as Coolie and War 2; Kantara: A Legend Chapter – 1 and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari; and Thamma and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat.
“Sharing of screens and shows on the release day between distributors of competing films has been a long-standing issue. However, of late, it has become too aggressive and ruthless. Today, big and established distributors make almost every possible effort to deprive relatively smaller distributors of competing films from getting a fair number of shows and screens,” said Rajesh R Nair, producer of Hindi films such as Kaminey and Adipurush.
One of the unfair tactics major distributors have reportedly used is threatening single-screen owners and key multiplexes to withhold their films, both current and upcoming, if they allocate shows to competing titles backed by smaller distributors.
“In recent months, industry insiders have shared that big distributors have been threatening single-screen theatre owners and multiplexes that they would not supply them current and future inventory of films if they allocate shows to distributors of competing films,” said film distributor and trade analyst Shaaminder Malik.
Big distributors, with their strong reputations and deep pockets, have the advantage of backing a steady pipeline of theatre-worthy films. These strengths give them an edge over mid- and small-sized distributors when negotiating the number of screens and shows with single-screen owners and multiplexes.
Industry estimates show India has more than 9,900 screens, 55-57% of which are single screens.
“Big distributors have been even stipulating the number of shows their films must get on the release date to theatre owners. All this is at the expense of competing films of relatively smaller distributors,” said Malik.
Industry observers said such tactics by major distributors reflect growing nervousness about how their films will be received.
“Each story is different and appeals to a different audience, so in a sense it’s not a competition. Unjust tactics by big distributors to thwart relatively smaller distributors of competing films from getting sufficient screens and shows on the release day reflects their lack of confidence in the films they are backing,” said Bibhabari Rath Assudani, founder, Motion Mind Ventures, a company that helps filmmakers in critical stages of film-making such as financing and distribution.
Experts, however, pointed out that such tactics offer no long-term advantage, as exhibitors typically adjust show schedules after the opening weekend in favour of films that draw stronger audience interest.
“Ultimately, these tactics of big distributors are short-term strategies. After the opening weekend, only the film which has received high audience preference wins irrespective of the fact whether it is backed by a big or small distributor. Exhibitors promptly change the programming of shows in favour of films preferred by audiences given the capital-intensive nature of the business,” explained producer Rajesh R Nair.
Agreeing with Nair, Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder & Director, Karmic Films shared, “Multiplexes are far more data-driven now. By Sunday of an opening weekend of releases, show allocations automatically tilt toward the film that holds occupancy and momentum. In that sense, market correction plays a critical role in which film will get more shows after the opening weekend of releases.”

SUNNY SANSKARI KI TULSI KUMARI UNDERPERFORMS; KANTARA: A LEGEND – CHAPTER 1 SPREADS CHEER
Last week’s releases, Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, have amassed nearly Rs. 150 crores at the box office. While the collections of the former have been encouraging, those of the latter have underperformed.
From the advances, it was clear that Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 won’t collect Rs. 30-40 crores, which was expected. The hope was that it would at least cross the Rs. 20 crore mark due to the National Holiday (October 2) factor. But Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1’s opening was Rs. 17.75 crores. On Friday, it had a normal drop and earned Rs. 11.25 crores.
However, on Saturday and Sunday, it surpassed its Thursday collections, accumulating Rs. 19 crores and Rs. 21.50 crores, respectively. On Monday, it had a good hold, collecting Rs. 8.75 crores. The film jumped on Tuesday, earning Rs. 10.75 crores, due to the discounted offer. On Wednesday, the collections were Rs. 7.50 crores. The total until now is Rs. 96.50 crores and by the end of its extended week, it would cross the Rs. 100 crore mark.
It won’t be able to enter the Rs. 200 crore club, despite no competition this Friday and the next. The aim should be to reach the Rs. 170 crore mark and thereby, cross the earnings of Raid 2, Sitaare Zameen Par and Housefull 5.
Meanwhile, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari was expected to open at Rs. 7-8 crores but it had an opening of Rs. 9.25 crores. But from here on, the trend wasn’t encouraging. On its second day, it collected Rs. 5.50 crores, which were low earnings. It was not able to go past its day 1 number; its Saturday and Sunday collections were Rs. 7.50 crores and Rs. 8 crores respectively.

With the Hindi version of Kantara: A Legend Chapter – 1 earning almost double of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, trade attributes it to the former’s brand value and the rom-com’s lack of novelty

Two diverse offerings, a mythological spectacle and a romantic comedy, were presented to the audience over the extended four-day weekend. The audience has made its pick known, loud and clear. Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: A Legend Chapter – 1’s Hindi version is poised to end its opening weekend run at over Rs 60 crore, in contrast to Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor’s Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, which has reportedly made over Rs 30 crore.
Set to amass a whopping Rs 200 crore by the night of October 5 across languages, the dominance of Shetty’s Kannada feature in the South market is not surprising. Bihar-based exhibitor and trade analyst Vishek Chauhan notes that the mythological drama is ruling the Hindi belt too. “In Karnataka, it’s a blockbuster, and [in other markets too], the film is making big money. It’s a super hit in Hindi,” he tells mid-day.
Given Kantara’s (2022) phenomenal run in the Hindi belt, the trade expected the second instalment to open bigger. However, Chauhan considers that an unrealistic ask. He reasons, “The trade thought that since the original broke out like the KGF and Pushpa franchises, the second part would follow the same trajectory and open at Rs. 30-40 crore. But Kantara doesn’t have any commercial hooks, like songs or romance. To expect it to open like a conventional blockbuster is [wrong]. The 2022 film’s [Hindi version] opened at Rs 2-3 crore, and this one did at Rs 17 crore. So, it has done six times the first part’s opening day.”
Rajasthan-based exhibitor Raj Bansal says while the festival release benefitted both the films, Sunny Sanskari ki Tulsi Kumari’s opening was compromised due to the clash. “I believe Sunny Sanskari… earned around 25 per cent less than it should have,” Bansal tells mid-day, before pointing out that Shashank Khaitan’s directorial venture has little going for it.
“There is no novelty in the story; it’s routine feel-good cinema. We have about a dozen of such stories coming. So, the audience didn’t get excited about the film. Varun’s last few films haven’t fared well. That also affects a release’s opening day collection.”
With the collections set to take a drop on Monday, trade expects Sunny Sanskari… to wrap up with a lifetime business of Rs. 60-70 crore. Chauhan adds, “This is concerning for Varun because this will be another flop for him. He needs to introspect because [rom-coms] were his turf.”

In the 1990s, most of us grew up on David Dhawan’s comedies. Over two decades on, entertainers in that genre have reduced in Hindi cinema, with Shashank Khaitan being one of the few filmmakers attempting it. From his debut film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014) to his latest work, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, it’s easy to see that Khaitan is influenced by the senior director’s school of cinema, blending romance and comedy to make an all-out entertainer.
Ask him what led to that brand of comedy’s decline, and Khaitan analyses that it was perceived as “easy”. “A narrative was created that these films were not real cinema. People started believing that only films with intense messages were serious cinema. It made filmmakers apologetic about the genre. But the truth is that someone like David Dhawan could teach cinema to anyone, given his understanding of editing and craft. The genre was unjustly treated. It’s as tough to make a Sunny Sanskari… as it is to make a Homebound. Our definition of entertainment needs to expand. Entertainment isn’t only laughing and clapping. Homebound was entertaining to me because it engaged me, taught me about a different worldview,” he shares.
The industry may create its narratives, but Khaitan is staying true to what he knows. With the Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf-starrer, the director is bringing a family entertainer set against the backdrop of a big, fat wedding. His trump card is his leading man Varun. Having worked together on two movies previously, Khaitan says they push each other by surprising one another.
Khaitan shares, “When I write for Varun, I have to think, ‘How do I present him differently?’ Otherwise he’ll get bored of me. So even within a similar universe, we tried to make Sunny different from Humpty and Badri. Here, we’ve gone more tongue-in-cheek in terms of the performance.”
As he reunites with Kapoor seven years after launching her in Dhadak (2018), the difference in the actor is evident to him. Today, she is more confident and aware of the world around her, he notes. “When Dhadak was released, she was dealing with a massive personal tragedy, which made her retreat into a shell. Now, she is much more open and ready to express herself as an artiste. She accepts the pros and cons of her family background, the love and hate that comes with it. She is not scared to take chances. That’s exciting for me as someone who knows her personally, and as a director who now has an actor unafraid to take risks.”
With Sunny Sanskari…, Khaitan has managed something unusual — an ensemble cast where each actor holds his ground. Many directors say it’s impossible these days because of egos.
What’s his take? “I managed it by being honest with everyone. I gave my entire script to the actors and told them, ‘Only come on board if you trust me’. I don’t oversell. I don’t make commitments about things beyond my control, like posters or promotions. That honesty keeps egos out of the conversation.”

Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is a fun-filled entertainer with humour as its strong point. The first half has a lot of laugh-out-loud scenes with the peppy songs adding to the interest. The climax is a bit unexpected and lands properly. The dialogues are a USP. On the flipside, there's hardly any story and moreover, the makers have given out a chunk of it in the trailer. Hence, one knows what will come next, at least in the first half. The film stagnates at the beginning of the second half. The jungle safari scene is a lost opportunity; the makers could have done so much here. Also, the family angle looks forced and doesn't work as intended. Varun Dhawan owns this space and as expected, he nails it with his performance. Janhvi Kapoor looks ravishing and delivers a worthy act. Sanya Malhotra, too, looks great and, as expected, her performance is spot-on. The dashing Rohit Saraf is too good, like always. Abhinav Sharma (Bantu) is fine, while Maniesh Paul is very funny. Akshay Oberoi is decent, but is let down by the writing. All in all, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari makes for a good timepass watch.

The stage is set for the first big clash of the month, between Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. The advance of both films is underwhelming though the advance on October 1 picked up well.
Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 is a prequel to Kantara, the sleeper super-hit of 2022. In Hindi, it collected around Rs. 80 crores though it started at just Rs. 1 crore. In other words, it had a solid trend and stayed in cinemas for many weeks. It was not the usual South film and the devotional element worked big time. This part was set in 1990 while Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 is set in the 3rd or 4th century. However, the trailer promises a connection with the 2022 film despite the varied timelines.
Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 was considered by many as a sure-shot huge opener and record grosser. Hence, it was believed that it would open at Rs. 40-45 crores in Hindi. But the advance sales on the first day made it clear that it won't be happening.
The trade believes that it was never meant to open with a bang as it's not a film on the lines of KGF, Pushpa or Baahubali. Secondly, the trailer dropped late and moreover, it hasn't worked as intended. Hence, many have decided to wait for initial reviews and then decide to book tickets.
Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 will open at around Rs. 20 crores and there's a chance that it might end up collecting Rs. 25 crores plus as well. Thankfully, the advance picked up big time a day before.
As for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, it is a romcom and stars Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf. It is directed by Shashank Khaitan of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania fame.
The trailer of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari looks fun-filled. Most importantly, it looks like a non-violent film and hence is meant for the whole family. Songs have managed to register. But the buzz is quite limited and even here, the wait and watch strategy is being adopted.
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari will open at around Rs. 7-8 crores. Since it's a national holiday, a double-digit opening is not ruled out.

The trade believes that it was never meant to open with a bang as it's not a film on the lines of KGF, Pushpa or Baahubali. Secondly, the trailer dropped late and moreover, it hasn't worked as intended. Hence, many have decided to wait for initial reviews and then decide to book tickets.
Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 will open at around Rs. 20 crores and there's a chance that it might end up collecting Rs. 25 crores plus as well. Thankfully, the advance picked up big time a day before.
As for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, it is a romcom and stars Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf. It is directed by Shashank Khaitan of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania fame.
The trailer of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari looks fun-filled. Most importantly, it looks like a non-violent film and hence is meant for the whole family. Songs have managed to register. But the buzz is quite limited and even here, the wait and watch strategy is being adopted.
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari will open at around Rs. 7-8 crores. Since it's a national holiday, a double-digit opening is not ruled out.
Both films have the advantage of a big holiday and a four-day weekend. Moreover, it will have no competition until October 21. Hence, sky is the limit for them if reports are positive. But if word of mouth is not encouraging, the film can start falling from Friday onwards.

Festival releases often translate into a box-office clash. With Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari and Kantara: Chapter 1, however, the war has begun even before they hit the theatres on October 2. The two releases are engaged in a screen war, which started when the distributors of the Rishab Shetty-starrer asked that the mythological action drama be allotted all single-screen theatres across the country and a dominant share of prime shows in multiplexes. This sparked a backlash from the makers of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, who have now insisted on equal screen division across key territories.
Even as the two movies’ advance booking has opened, exhibitors fear being the worst hit as they will end up disappointing at least one major distributor no matter what they decide. Single-screen owners, especially in Tier-2 and -3 towns, are said to be under intense pressure from each party to increase the respective film’s shows.
The ongoing clash has left the trade on edge. Delhi-based screen owner Gurmeet Seble told mid-day, “Such clashes hurt everyone — producers, exhibitors, and sometimes even the audience, who may find their choice of film unavailable at their nearest theatre.”
Ramesh Bala, a leading trade analyst, noted that while Kantara: Chapter 1 is expected to dominate screens in South India, the Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor-starrer will benefit in the northern region.
“In the past, Kantara commanded the maximum share of screens in the South. In the North, the division of screens depends on advance bookings, with multiplex chains adjusting their show counts closer to release based on early demand. Dharma Productions has influence in the North, especially in multiplex circuits. That gives Sunny Sanskari... a negotiating edge in those markets,” he analysed.
Bala pointed out that the two films belong to different genres, and hence, will target different sections of the audience. “A middle ground will have to be found before the release weekend. By the Monday after the release, word-of-mouth will decide the hold.”
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh revealed that there isn’t a neat 50-50 division across Mumbai screens. “In most multiplexes here, Kantara is getting more screens. The buzz is based on the euphoria of the last part [Kantara, 2022]. Sunny Sanskari... is a happy family film with a wedding backdrop and will pull crowds in the North sector.”

Sonu Nigam has always maintained that remakes aren’t as bad as they’re made out to be — provided they honour the original. This belief is now personal, as the singer’s 1999 pop hit Bijuria makes a comeback in actor Varun Dhawan’s upcoming film, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari.
“Remakes, if done with respect and regard to the original creators, are not a bad thing at all,” the 52-year-old tells us, adding, “Sometimes remakes spoil a song, but a lot of times they bring back old melodies and create nostalgia for people who grew up with them. Even I discovered singers Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra through reimagined versions.”
Originally part of his third non-film album Mausam (1999), Bijuria was conceived as pure pop. “I had the freedom to choose what I wanted to sing. We weren’t thinking of movies at all. And now, after 26 years, it’s finding its way into a film. It is an incredible thing, really,” he recalls.
The music video, which featured Sonu as a ghost, cemented its cult appeal. “It caught the fancy of youngsters like Varun back then, which is why he has so much love for the song,” he says.
For Sonu, the original album will always be special: “We had legends like Shivamani (percussionist), Rupert Fernandes (composer) and others contribute. The bond we shared as a team is what reflects in the success of the album. That is why people are still in love with the songs.”

Mumbai: A clash for box office share between big-budget Hindi and southern films in the next few months will put the theatrical revival of Bollywood to the test, say producers and trade analysts.
Three big southern films - Coolie (Tamil), Kantara: Chapter 1 (Kannada) and The Raja Saab (Telugu)-are scheduled for release in the second half of 2025. Their release dates clash directly with Bollywood movies War 2, Ikkis, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari and Dhurandhar.
With each of these films having an estimated budget of Rs. 150-400 crore, the stakes are high.
The second half of 2025 began on a promising note for Bollywood with the unexpected success of the mid-budget Saiyaara, which has raked in Rs. 175 crore in box-office collections since its July 18 release. But the market dynamics will be different for the upcoming releases. This is the first time since the pandemic when the release dates of big southern films are clashing with Hindi films of similar scale.
"Post-pandemic, the lines between regional and Hindi films have blurred," said producer and film business expert Girish Johar. "Today, audiences want the best content. So, if there is a formidable southern film aimed at a pan-India audience ... it does impact the box office potential of the competing Hindi film."
Bollywood producers often avoid clashes with southern films, as loyal audiences of southern films shun Hindi movies to watch their favourite stars on screen. A blockbuster pan-India film form the south could reduce the box office potential of a competing Hindi film by 10-20%, according to trade experts.
"When tentpole films clash, the impact at the box office is far deeper than just opening-day collections," said Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director of Karmic Films. "Screens are shared. Show timings are compromised. In north India alone, a high-stakes clash can mean a Rs. 20-40 crore loss in revenues for each film."
Revenue from digital, satellite and overseas rights will also take a hit, say distributors. They suggest a solo release of a big-budget Hindi or southern film as a practical solution.
"A well-timed solo release can improve legs at the box office, optimize holdover weeks and elevate a film from a Rs. 300 crore hit to a Rs. 500 crore blockbuster," said Wadhwa.
"Clashes are always bad for business," said Rajesh R Nair, the producer of Hindi films such as Kaminey and Adipurush. Southern films are tracking well, especially Kantara: Chapter 1, one of the most awaited sequels, he said. He also expects strong competition to the upcoming Bollywood movies from Rajinikanth's Coolie and the Prabhas-starrer horror-comedy: The Raja Saab.
Some trade analysts believe that the timing of these releases may work in their favour, as these will be released on public holidays when footfalls are usually high in theatres.
"Also, the genres of these competing films are different. These films will be accommodated," said Girish Wankhede, a movie trade analyst. But in the long run, he said "only the content of these films will work".
While the success of Saiyaara was encouraging, theatres also recorded noteworthy contributions from Hollywood films such as Superman, Jurassic World: Rebirth and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Apart from Indian films, Hollywood movies such as Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire And Ash are also scheduled for release in the second half of 2025.
According to media and entertainment research firm Ormax Media, the second half of 2025 is likely to contribute 52% to the all-India box office revenue of Rs. 13,500 crore estimated for 2025.

Amid a flurry of OTT releases, a film releasing in theatres is a big deal in itself these days. It is almost a gamble, given how picky audiences are about a theatrical watch. One look at the 2025 calendar of releases, and you will realize that the next three months seem to be a rough patch for the industry. Among others, the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) is said to be one of the reasons for the lean patch.
Looking at April alone, many releases have been shifted. The Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi-starrer Jolly LLB 3 will now hit the screens in August. Filmmaker Karan Johar’s Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, starring Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor and Sanya Malhotra, will now hit the screens on September 12 instead of April 18. A source tells us that while the shoot started later than intended, businessman Adar Poonawalla buying 50% stake in KJo’s Dharma Productions also added to the delay.
Metro... In Dino was originally set to come out on November 29 last year, but it got pushed to July 4. Sharing why the film wasn’t slated for a summer release, a source close to the project informs us: “We wanted a desired window looking at the other releases. So, we settled on July 4.”
Of course, the trade is not happy with the lean patch. Expert Atul Mohan says, “Every month sees one or two big releases, but small filmmakers don’t prefer to release their films in theatres when the IPL is on. So, they push their dates by a month or two.”
Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, director of Phule, isn’t perturbed by the IPL or other films releasing alongside: “April 10 is the 197th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. So, how can we miss out on that date? There won’t be any point otherwise.”
Films set to hit the screens this summer
April currently has four theatrical releases that are likely to hit the screens as scheduled — Jaat and Bhool Chuk Maaf on April 10, Phule on April 11 and The Bhootnii on April 18. May has two releases — Raid 2 and Kesari Veer.
June will see three films in theatres — Housefull 5, Maalik and Maa.

This yet-untitled project marks the father-son duo’s fourth collaboration after Main Tera Hero (2014), Judwaa 2 (2017), and Coolie No. 1 (2020). Backed by Ramesh Taurani’s Tips Entertainment, the film also marks Kannada actor Sreeleela’s Bollywood debut, featuring alongside Mrunal Thakur and Maniesh Paul.
After wrapping up the Mumbai and Goa schedule, a 45-day schedule has been planned across London and other parts of the UK during May and June. A source reveals that the veteran filmmaker and his team have locked several iconic locations for the shoot, ensuring a mix of grand cityscapes and scenic countryside backdrops.
The source shares, “Varun and the team will be shooting extensively in London, covering popular spots including Piccadilly Circus among other places. There is an elaborate dance number planned which will be one of the highlights of the film.”
The UK schedule will also include a week-long shoot in the countryside, where the team will film key romantic portions and a chase sequence.
“David Dhawan is keen on bringing a fresh, international aesthetic to the film while maintaining his signature humour and energy,” the source adds.
Varun, who has been juggling multiple projects, will fly to London by mid-May after completing his commitments for Border 2 and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari.

Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Saraf and Akshay Oberoi are in the midst of shooting four songs back-to-back in the last schedule of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. With two dance numbers already shot at a set in Madh Island, Oberoi admits that matching steps with seasoned dancers like Dhawan, Kapoor and Malhotra has been challenging.
Actor Akshay Oberoi, who plays a pivotal role in the film, shared exclusive details about the intense shoot and his own challenges while matching steps with seasoned dancers like Varun, Janhvi, and Sanya.
"It’s been an incredible learning experience. I had to really step up my game because these three are natural dancers, and their energy is infectious. I went through rigorous dance training before the shoot to make sure I could keep up," he says.
The songs, choreographed by some of the best names in the industry including Ganesh Acharya, are all different high-energy dance numbers, including an elaborate wedding dance party. Dancing with Hrithik Roshan in Sher Khul Gaye was an incredible experience, but that was just one song. We have Varun, Sanya and Janhvi. They all are great dancers and with Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, I get to truly explore this side of me, and it’s such an exhilarating feeling. The script demanded that there be that many peppy numbers. I have never had this opportunity to be part of a role that demanded to display so much dancing on the big screen. Until now. So excited to see how this shapes out. I for one have had a blast shooting for these numbers”.

But by February-end, the actor will take a break from the intense war drama and enjoy some song-and-dance instead. We’ve heard Dhawan will fly back to Mumbai to film a lavish song for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, Shashank Khaitan’s directorial venture that also stars Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf. The dance number, featuring Dhawan and Kapoor, will be shot on a specially constructed set in Madh Island between February 24 and 28.
A source from the production shares, “The shoot of Sunny Sanskari… was wrapped up last September. Only this song is remaining. Shashank wants a vibrant number that captures the film’s light-hearted mood. In his previous offerings, the director has had popular dance numbers—be it Saturday Saturday from Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania [2014] or the title track in Badrinath Ki Dulhania [2017]. He wants an energetic and foot-tapping track this time too.”
Ganesh Acharya has been roped in to choreograph the number, which will include 50 background dancers.

After a no-show in 2024, Aamir and Salman Khan will return to the cinemas this year. What else is in store? A woman-led spy thriller, big-ticket south entertainers, and not surprisingly, sequels galore

Would it be too simplistic to say that one of the reasons 2024 was a lean year at the box-office was because the Khan troika—Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman—did not have a single release? Perhaps. But ask any Hindi movie fan, and they’ll tell you that the superstars were sorely missed. Which is why all eyes are on this year, when at least two Khans will be back on the big screen.
Salman hasn’t had a release since Tiger 3 (2023). But a lot happened with the superstar throughout 2024, beginning with a round of firing outside his Bandra house in April to receiving death threats from gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. So, his return to celluloid with Sikandar is eagerly awaited.
What makes it better is that in his maiden collaboration with director A R Murugadoss, he will do what he does best—be a larger-than-life hero and avenge the wrong. Expect high-octane action, drama, a fresh on-screen jodi with Rashmika Mandanna, and a script that requires suspension of disbelief. Oh, and presumably a bumper opening. After all, his fans will go in droves for their Eidi.
While the audience’s Eid is dedicated to Salman, Aamir Khan will be their summer date. It has taken the superstar four years since the underwhelming response to his passion project, Laal Singh Chaddha (2021), to face the camera again. This time, he promises another heartfelt story with Sitaare Zameen Par. The actor-producer considers it a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par (2007). An adaptation of the Spanish sports comedy, Campeones (2018), Aamir said the new film was “way ahead” of its predecessor, flipping the narrative as it shows how far people can go despite their challenges.
Directed by R S Prasanna of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017) fame, it also stars Genelia Deshmukh and Darsheel Safary. Will it create the box-office magic that Laal Singh Chaddha couldn’t? Who can tell? But then, as we start 2025, we can hope this is the year the audience loves movies for their narratives, not box-office numbers.
Game Changer
Director S Shankar may have had a misfire last year with Indian 2. But the director, known for his visual spectacles, blends politics and action again in Game Changer. Ram Charan plays an IAS officer determined to battle corruption and promote fair elections in the Telugu action thriller scheduled for a
January 10 release.
Raid 2
With franchise films becoming a ticket to success in 2024, Ajay Devgn has lined up two sequels this year. Director Raj Kumar Gupta’s Raid 2 is set to release on May 1, coinciding with Maharashtra Day. The film sees Devgn reprise his role as IRS officer Amay Patnaik, who conducts another high-stakes income tax raid. The cast includes Riteish Deshmukh, Vaani Kapoor, and Rajat Kapoor. The superstar also has the rom-com, De De Pyaar De 2, in which he reunites with his Shaitaan (2024) co-star R Madhavan.
Housefull 5
A new year, and there is a new instalment of Housefull. Housefull 5, led by Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh, comes five years after the last instalment. Tarun Mansukhani’s directorial venture promises to have everything you expect from the franchise—read an ensemble cast, a gag a minute and a wafer-thin plot. This one, also starring Abhishek Bachchan, Fardeen Khan, Jacqueliene Fernandez, and Nargis Fakhri, is largely set on a
luxury cruise.
Chhaava
After Sardar Udham (2021) and Sam Bahadur (2023), Vicky Kaushal leads his third biopic, this time playing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Based on the novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant, Laxman Utekar’s historical drama depicts Sambhaji Maharaj as a fierce warrior who upheld the Maratha legacy during his reign in the 17th century. Rashmika Mandanna portrays Yesubai Bhonsale, Sambhaji’s wife.
Yet-untitled film on C Sankaran Nair
You will definitely not miss Akshay Kumar this year, because the superstar has four releases lined up. This Karan Johar production, based on Indian lawyer and statesman C Sankaran Nair, chronicles how the lawyer challenged the British empire to acknowledge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi and also starring Ananya Panday, it is an adaptation of the book, The Case that Shook the Empire. Kumar will also be seen in the Republic Day release, Skyforce, and Jolly LLB 3.
Alpha
A female spy is finally headlining a film in the YRF spy universe. Alia Bhatt joins the on-screen espionage world that is populated by Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif. Joining Bhatt in Shiv Rawail’s directorial venture is Sharvari, who caught people’s attention with Munjya last year. Alpha is scheduled for a Christmas 2025 release.
War 2
Two of the most popular superstars of the current crop, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR are set to battle it out in the Independence Day release, War 2. Roshan returns as Kabir, the R&AW agent who went rogue in the 2019 blockbuster, War. The sequel to the spy thriller comes with new faces in front of and behind the camera. While RRR (2022) star Jr NTR makes his highly anticipated Bollywood debut, director Ayan Mukerji takes the directorial baton from Siddharth Anand. Added to the mix are Kiara Advani, and a potential crossover with Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Salman Khan’s Tiger.
Thug Life
In June, we’ll witness the reunion of two icons. More than 35 years after they first collaborated on Nayakan (1987), superstar Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam have reunited for Thug Life. The Tamil gangster action drama features a pan-India cast, including Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Pankaj Tripathi, Sanya Malhotra, Ali Fazal and Rohit Saraf. To top it all, Oscar winner AR Rahman, who composed for Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2, has lent the score for the upcoming film.
Deva
Following his romantic turn in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya last year, Shahid Kapoor is in the mood for mayhem. He turns a no-nonsense cop in the January release, Deva. Expect high-octane action sequences and a rising body count in this action thriller that sees Malayalam filmmaker Rosshan Andrrews foraying into Hindi cinema.
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari
It’s the year of Varun Dhawan’s return to the romance genre. In April, the actor will bring Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, also starring Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf. It reunites Varun with his Dulhania franchise director Shashank Khaitan. He will follow it up with Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, marking his fourth collaboration with director-father David Dhawan.
Lahore 1947
Lahore 1947 is a case of something old and something new. While the period drama marks the fourth collaboration between actor Sunny Deol and director Rajkumar Santoshi, it marks the maiden union of the leading man with producer Aamir Khan. Later, I got busy with my acting assignments and couldn’t make the time for it. But when this film came my way, I was delighted as it gave me an opportunity to get back to my passion. It took me a while, as I lost touch with it. When you're out of practice, you're rusty, even acting when you're out of practice, you're rusty. That is why it's part of my daily routine now. I keep basic touch with it and my body used to kicking and stretching at that level, it's easier to not lose touch. I hope to continue training even in the future.”
Talking about his acting journey, he shares, "When I started out, the movies I was doing did not have any scope for martial arts. It’s only recently that I started doing some action films. Action also requires bigger budgets. So, finally, I’m in that space. Yes, I have a lot more desire to explore, but I'm so grateful for this period because I'm finally getting to do bigger films like with Toxic and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari and such mainstream Hindi cinema, which is something that Fighter gave me access to. These are the same filmmakers who probably knew me before Fighter but wouldn't give me these opportunities, but that's how the business works. That is particularly why I am grateful for this phase."
In Hindi movies, actor Tiger Shroff is primarily known for doing MMA. However, Akshay is in no mood to compare himself with the Bade Miyan Chote Miyan actor.
"For me, my core business is acting – doing different and versatile roles. His core business is action. These are just bonuses that I have in my toolkit. I would be a fool to think I'm on Tiger’s level. That's not even my dhandha, ye unka dhandha hai. They need to sell that. There are some actors known as action stars and some chocolate heroes, but I want to be known as an actor. I enjoy action, but I don’t want anything to take the focus away from my performances. I need to keep experimenting with movies. Sometimes a performance will go wrong and sometimes it will go right. But that's my journey. This is just a small part that I can bring to the table. It's not my main focus," he concludes.

Varun, Janhvi, Sanya kick off Udaipur leg of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari; director to film all ensemble sequences in stint

The joy of an ensemble film is that it feels less like work and more like fun. The cast of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari would agree. After kicking off Shashank Khaitan’s directorial venture in May in Mumbai, Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor have now headed to Udaipur.
Akshay Oberoi, who is part of the romantic comedy that also features Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf, says the ongoing schedule has been delightful. “Anyone can imagine the scenario on the set—the laughter, the bonding, and all the fun behind the scenes. I’m enjoying every bit of it,” he shares.
We hear Khaitan has charted out a three-week schedule in Rajasthan during which most combination scenes will be canned. The unit will follow it up with another stint in Mumbai. Oberoi says being part of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari has only reinforced his faith in ensemble films.
“I remember those ’80s films that had all the stars— from Vinod Khanna to Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor. The audiences used to love those movies because they would see so many different characters on screen. [Another advantage is] that the weight of the entire film does not rest on one person. Ensemble films bring your favourite heroes together on screen; we should be doing more of them.”

Akshay, who stars in Sunny Sanskari, says director Shashank understands actors’ needs and extracts the best from them

What does a big film on your résumé do? Gets you a bigger movie. Fighter did just that for Akshay Oberoi. Soon after he featured in director Siddharth Anand’s aerial action thriller, the actor bagged Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, which is led by Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor.
“Working on Fighter has been a transformative experience for me. Its success has landed me a substantial role in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, directed by Shashank Khaitan. Additionally, the recognition from Fighter has [opened me up to] the southern film industry, and I will be part of a yet-unannounced south project,” shares Oberoi.
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, also starring Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf, is set against the backdrop of a wedding and went on floors in May. While working in a Dharma production is a dream come true for Oberoi, the joy of collaborating with Khaitan and Dhawan stands out for him.
“Shashank understands an actor’s language. He knows how to bring out the best, because he knows exactly what to say to you. I have already worked with Sanya [on Love Hostel]; she is a great talent. Janhvi is wonderful. Varun never brings his stardom to set, and his fun energy keeps the set lively.”
