Sumona Chakravarti on not being part of Kapil Sharma’s show: "Koi khoon ka rishta thodi hai"

Sumona Chakravarti values her privacy and prefers to keep the focus on her work rather than her personal life. She explains, “Hamesha available ho jaao toh mystery khatam ho jaati hai. I am quite old-school in that regard. Pehle zamaane mein mystery rehti thi, jab social media nahi tha. I believe in maintaining that sense of mystery, so I prefer the era before social media. While I am fine with attention on me as an artiste, I prefer to keep my personal life private.”
Sumona is currently shooting for the 14th season of the stunt-based reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi in Romania. She says, “I have taken it on as a challenge. Being an adventure and adrenaline junkie, I felt the urge to reignite that passion.”
The actress, who has been part of several TV shows such as Kasamh Se, Kasturi, Khotey Sikkey, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, and Jamai Raja, is today more known as Kapil Sharma’s wife Manju from his comedy show. Often, a popular role can overshadow an artiste’s other work. Does she feel the same way?
“Yes, it has been overshadowed because many know me only from Bade Achhe Lagte Hain or as Manju from Comedy Nights With Kapil. It has been a bit of a speed bump, but I am also repositioning myself by telling people that I have a body of work and am eager to take up different characters,” she replies.
Since Manju has been a much-loved character, was she disappointed when she wasn’t called to join the cast of the OTT version of Kapil’s show?
“Not at all. After wrapping up the season on TV last July, I got busy networking and auditioning. When I found out about the show, it didn’t matter because koi khoon ka rishta thodi hai ki hum kahiin aur zindagi mein kaam nahi karenge kisi aur ke saath, aur yahin karenge. Honestly, I am on a different journey and in a different mindset. That’s a very talented group of people, and I think it’s time for people to see my other talents,” she concludes.
Now, I am trying to better my PR skills; literally asking for work-Sumona Chakravarti

Although she's widely recognised for her adroitness, Sumona Chakravarti, in her own words, has not been doing enough as an actor. In films, she was last seen in the Salman Khan-starrer Kick (2014). On TV, she has been a part of The Kapil Sharma Show for quite some time now. One wonders what’s keeping her away from doing more.
“I don’t socialise much or attend parties, I usually head home or catch up with friends after shooting. Many might have forgotten I exist (laughs). But, I think it’s very important to make your presence felt these days if you want to continue as an actor,” opines Sumona.
Apart from not getting the kind of work she is craving for, the 31-year-old points out that people often end up misunderstanding her, which adds to her worries.
“I feel people think I’m arrogant, will ask for heavy remuneration and so on. That’s not true. I want to put it out there for everyone that being an actor, I’d demand what I deserve and I’m ready to negotiate for a good project. My PR skills definitely aren’t up to the mark. I realised that quite late… Now, I’m trying to better my approach, meeting people, even calling and messaging them; literally asking for work,” explains Sumona, adding that although there’s no shame in asking for work, she was under the impression that “you just need to prove yourself with your work and rest will fall in place. But clearly just working hard isn’t enough”.
While her effort has started showing results, the actor says there’s still a long way to go. Ask the kind of characters and genres she is focusing on, she says, “The hero-heroine days are gone, focus is mostly on stories and ensemble cast. Of course, if I get one of the lead parts, I’d love to do it, but then if I’m offered a character essential to the plot, I’d take that, too. It can’t be like, if you remove the character, the story still progresses, there needs to be some significance,” says Sumona.
The genres that she’s craving to explore include an out-and-out romance or darker stories. “Maybe a psycho character or a police/intelligence officer. Such characters are fascinating,” she says.
Why I am missing from the show is something that you should ask Kapil Sharma-Sumona Chakravarti

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; September 18, 2016)
You have been missing from The Kapil Sharma Show for many weeks now. Why?
I don't know. We have shot many gags and there are many of my episodes in the bank. I had also gone to Switzerland, so I missed quite a few episodes when Salman Khan and other celebrities were on the show. When they will air my slot is a call the creative guys will take. I just love my work and don't think of anything else.
But we haven't seen you on the show regularly, unlike in Comedy Nights with Kapil. Are they planning to introduce a love interest for Kapil?
That's a question you should ask Kapil Sharma. I am just a part of the team and I follow the script. I don't get into that aspect of how much air time they are slotting for me. I have been working for the last 10 years and I got my due very late in this industry, but all this does not bother me. Anyway, I am not a Salman Khan or a Shah Rukh Khan who can control the creative part of an episode. I am not aware if they are introducing a new love interest; people should understand that I am not involved in the decision-making process.
What do you have to say about the recent Kapil Sharma controversy around his tweets on corruption in the BMC?
Do you enjoy being recognised as Kapil Ki Biwi?
Yes, why not? But audiences will not attach me to that name forever. Earlier, I was known as Ram (Kapoor) ki bahen and now, Kapil ki biwi. At the end of the day, it's your work that people acknowledge you for.
Would you promote a film on any rival stand-up comedy show?
Even if I was not a part of Kapil's team, I will still promote my film on his show. Kapil is an exceptionally talented, down-to-earth guy who respects everyone. The way he treats the spot boy to the way he conducts himself with Bollywood celebs, he is really a very good guy. So there is no question of me going on any other show. And I have never watched Comedy Nights Bachao. I don't watch TV at all.
Sources confirm that you are getting married to Samrat Mukherjee in December. Is it true?
Why don't you all wait till December to see if I am getting married? No, I am not getting married and don't wish to. Why can't people see a single, independent woman live her life happily? If at all I decide to get married, why will it be a secret? Samrat is a great friend and I just bump into him during Durga puja festivities. Yes, he has a house here in Santacruz where I meet him and we catch up on each other's lives but that's it. Otherwise, we are too busy to even meet each other. I believe in 'que sera sera', so if marriage is meant to happen, it will happen. If you ask me, I would be happy in a companionship with a man. Everything does not have to culminate in marriage.
I don't want to play another saree clad character-Sumona Chakravarti

Neha Maheshwri Bhagat (BOMBAY TIMES; June 3, 2015)
Sumona Chakravarti, better
known as Manju - Kapil Sharma's wife in Comedy Nights With Kapil,
is returning to the fiction genre after almost a year. Last seen in the
daily soap Bade Achhe Laggte Hain as Ram Kapoor's sister, the actress
will soon enter Jamai Raja. She will play Siddharth's (Ravi Dubey)
childhood friend Misha Grewal. Her proximity with Siddharth will not go
down well with Roshni. Sumona says, “I hadn't gone anywhere, so there is
no question of a comeback. I was associated with Bade... for over three
years and I wanted a break after it
ended. Then, I got busy shooting films and travelling. I decided to
return to daily soaps starting this year, but people assumed that I
won't have time to devote since I am busy with Comedy Nights. But the
fact was that I was busy travelling, faffing and wasting money. I
wanted to get back to the grind. After doing a good show, you become
choosy about the projects you take up. I don't want to do another
character draped in a saree, wearing mangalsutra and sindoor in a fiction
show. My role in the new show is interesting and different.“
