Soundarya Sharma talks about her first American film and the experience of working in Hollywood
Akash Bhatnagar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 5, 2024)
This is quite an exciting time for actor Soundarya Sharma — she has a big Bollywood release next year with Housefull 5, and recently, she dropped pictures with Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick film series, announcing her Hollywood debut.
Sharma reveals that her maiden Hollywood project is a feature film. “I believe that manifestations are really powerful. I happened to meet a friend, who knew the producers and they called me when I was training there. They don’t have any hang-ups. If you actually deserve it, they will call you. There’s no backup of surnames, or push-and-pull games like kisi se phone kara do. That is what they keep asking you here,” she says, adding, “They are very particular about timings and there is no discrimination.”
Talking about Housefull 5, she says, “Working on it has been an incredible experience. I am treated the same way as Akshay (Kumar, actor) sir and others. I have worked in an ad with Akshay sir previously and he also came to the trailer launch of my film Ranchi Diaries six years ago. Being his heroine is an overwhelming feeling.”
Sharma faced flak for doing an ad associated with a paan masala brand, co-starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kumar and Ajay Devgn. Ask her about it and she says, “I was given an opportunity to share screen space with three of the biggest stars of India. Do you think I’m foolish enough to say ‘no’ to something like that? The choices I make as a person are different from those I make as an actor.”
Am I foolish not to accept an offer to share the screen with three superstars of the country?-Soundarya Sharma

Social media serves as a great tool to connect with a wider audience, but it also exposes an actor to negativity and judgments. Soundarya Sharma experienced it first-hand after a mouth freshener commercial featuring her alongside three Bollywood superstars dropped. Being a dentist, she faced criticism for being a part of it from a section of the audience.
Addressing the issue, she says, “The brand approached me for their mouth freshener commercial. I cannot think of endorsing anything that can harm a larger audience. Besides, no one can be forced to consume anything harmful. Nevertheless, in life, sometimes your choices are based on future aspirations. Yes, I am a dentist, but I’m also an actor. At times, my choices as an actor may differ from my personal opinions.”
Calling it a dream come true to share screen space with Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Akshay Kumar, the actress adds, “I hadn’t envisioned something like that coming my way, so I was thrilled to be offered such an opportunity. Am I foolish not to accept an offer to share the screen with three superstars of the country and boost my career?”
Like her career choices, Soundarya, who made headlines for her brief relationship with Gautam Singh Vig during her stint in the Bigg Boss house that ended in a fallout, is clear about decisions on the personal front as well. While Gautam tried to reach out to her, she didn’t want to rekindle the affair.
She says, “I don’t want to talk about something that’s a thing of the past. It holds no relevance in my life. I acknowledged it back then, but now, I don’t feel anything and have moved on. Since then, I have not been in touch with him.”
You’ve to do a non glamourous role to be accepted-Soundarya Sharma

Soundarya Sharma made her Hindi film debut with Ranchi Diaries that hit the screens in 2017. Three years later, she marked her foray into the web space with Raktanchal, a crime-drama. Known for her glamorous image, the actor was seen shedding her popular avatar and playing rather gritty characters in these projects.
“It was a conscious choice,” she says, adding, “People will see whatever you serve them. And it is totally the actor’s call as to how they want to be seen. In Hollywood, Julia Roberts is considered the most glamorous actor but she isn’t considered dumb. But here in Bollywood, you’ve to do a non-glamourous role to be accepted and be taken seriously.”
The actor confides that screen time isn’t her priority as long as she’s able to capture the imagination of the audience. “I’m open to doing a dance number or even play a small role in a big-budget film. Priyanka Chopra Jonas had just one song in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013) but when she came on the screen, it was magical. So, I believe even a smaller part can sometimes do wonders bigger than a character that you see throughout a film. It totally depends on the character that you play and ultimately the fate of the film,” she elaborates.
So, what are the factors that draw her to a project? “It has to be a good story as it is the main hero in today’s time. It needs to connect with me. The second criterion is my character. The third is the production house and the platform. To get a better understanding, I went to New York Film Academy and Lee Strasberg Theatre And Film Institute,” she replies.
Going ahead, Sharma reveals that she has a chock-o-block schedule. “I had started shooting for two web shows but we had to postpone them due to the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic. I also finished shooting 80% of the second season of Raktanchal. I recently signed a film but that too had to be halted. Another show was supposed to release on May 15 but we couldn’t shoot for the promotional material and so, that got postponed too,” she concludes.

Being at home with one’s family is possibly the only solace one can ask for amid the ongoing Coronavirus crisis. But what about many of those who’re not only away from their homes, but also homeland? Much like a lot of other people, many celebrities are also stuck in foreign countries.Singer Sonu Nigam has been in Dubai since March 6. Talking about the scenario there, he says, “Honestly, nothing much has changed since then. Dubai has started opening up. But I prefer staying indoors. What I need in my everyday life is available at home. And I’m the kind of person who’s very comfortable in his own company.”
Actor Mouni Roy, meanwhile, is stuck in Abu Dhabi since March, while actor Sana Saeed has no immediate plans to return to India from Los Angeles, where she has been living since before the US announced its lockdown on March 14. “The world is facing such a crisis, so it’s wrong to cry about your own personal things. People are going through far worse things,” she says.Asserting that she is constantly in touch with her family, Saeed, 31, adds, “They keep telling me that no lockdown doesn’t mean (there’s) no corona, or that everything is safe. So, I should stay here till things get better.”
Soundarya Sharma feels stuck after making seven unsuccessful attempts to book a return flight to India from the USA. “I’ve been stuck in Los Angeles for five months now. I came here for an acting workshop with Lee Strasberg, and finished that. I was halfway through my course at when this pandemic started,” she shares.Adding that there’s a lot of confusion around repatriation flights, she says, “It’s not easy to commute to the place from where the flights are taking off, plus the rates are four times the normal cost. That’s still okay, but I don’t want to risk it by taking four suitcases, and contracting something.”
Meanwhile, stuck in New York, actor Ankur Bhatia is in two minds over prospects of travelling back to India, to be with his father. “It has not been that bad actually. Me and my dad both have family with us. I’m with my wife and my kid. The plan was to stay here in NY for two-three weeks, but then it was a little shocking when news started coming in about no flights,” he says.
