Shivaji Satam has been seen in Marathi and Hindi movies since 1975. But he became a household name when he played ACP Pradyuman in the TV show CID, which aired for 20 years. But after the show went off air in 2018, one hasn’t seen him on the screen.
Talking about this, the veteran actor says, “I am not happy with the kind of offers I am getting. It’s been around two-and-a-half years that I have been looking for a good role. Sometimes people typecast me and give me similar cop roles, which I don’t mind playing, but they should be interesting and different. I am not one of those actors who would take up any role just for the sake of working. I want to do good work and I’ll only accept a role if it interests me.”
Ask him whether he feels typecast after playing ACP Pradyuman for so long, and he says, “I don’t think I have been typecast because, since the beginning of my career, I have played different roles in various genres. So people have seen me in different avatars even if CID went on for a long time.”
The pandemic has been tough on everyone. But Satam did shoot during this time. “I did Marathi movie and I also did a few ads,” he says. He is impressed with the way youngsters work. “I really like how these youngsters work. They are very clear about what they want. I like the energy, which is why I enjoy working with younger people and also adapting and learning from them,” he says.
Coming back to CID, there have been talks about the show coming back or a show on similar lines being made. Satam says, “It’s work in progress. It’s not easy to bring it back, but yes, everyone is working on it. We need to look for a channel and various other things. When everything falls into place, it will take off. But yes, whenever it comes back, it will be in a different and interesting format.”
The actor has an eight-and-a-half-year-old grandson with whom he loves spending time. He says, “My grandson, Yuvan, is very naughty and fun to be with. Someone in the family showed him CID and how I act in that show. So once came up to me and said, I know how you do ‘Kuch toh gadbad hai’ on the show! He enacts my dialogue very well. It’s fun to see him do that.”
The producers are talking to revive CID in a different kind of format-Shivaji Satam

Veteran actor Shivaji Satam may have made the character ACP Pradyuman immortal, however, he has been sitting idle at home for quite some time now. “I won’t say that I am getting many offers. Nahin hai toh nahin hai. There are one or two offers, but they are not interesting. I come from Marathi theatre background. I have always done projects that I’ve liked,” admits Satam.
Although he was last seen in a small role in Haseen Dillruba (2021), Satam feels that there are no meaty roles for actors of his age. “But we can’t do anything,” he sighs and adds, “It’s my bad luck that no strong characters are being written. It’s a loss on both sides. As an actor, I miss out on good work and the audience misses out on good actors.”
Satam says all the offers that he is getting are of “cop roles”, something he has done over two decades. “Main kyun karun? I cannot do the same role again and again,” he says. Ask him if he is ready to play ACP Pradyuman, a character from the cult TV series CID, and he reverts, “Tomorrow (if) CID starts again, I’ll be right in the front to do the project. I’m not tired of playing that character, but tired of being home.”
There have been several rumours that the cop drama may be revived with the same cast. Giving clarity on the same, Satam adds, “The producers are talking to revive CID in a different kind of format. Yes, talks are on, but there is nothing concrete. It’s still in the air.”
Daya and Abhijeet are an extension of my family-Shivaji Satam

Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; February 7, 2018)
CID has become one of the longest running programmes on Indian TV. What do you think has kept the audience glued?
People are always interested in watching a mystery. The forensics is another aspect that makes them more engaged. We never reveal the name of the poisons on our show, lest they be misused. The writers consciously omit the surname of a criminal, to avoid associating the offender with any caste. A lot of thought goes into making this series. Plus, we make sure that the stories never get monotonous. Also, I think the show works because people look up to a person in uniform. I, too, wanted to become an air force pilot, but could not pursue it.
What is the most interesting part of the show for you?
I like the fact that all the characters are distinct from each other. ACP Pradyuman may have his idiosyncrasies, but he is loyal, blunt and principled. The relationship that the central characters share is something people hope for in real life.
Over the years, you must have forged a deep bond with Dayanand Shetty and Aditya Srivastava.
Daya [Shetty’s character] and Abhi [Srivastava’s character] are like my younger brothers. They are an extension of my family. Daya is as big-hearted as his built. He is a foodie and knows what all of us love to eat. Abhi may look serious, but is mischievous.
Has there been any case that has been memorable?
One of the cases revolved around my teenage son, who gets into bad company and ends up becoming a terrorist. My character had no option but to kill him. It was a six-episode long story and the drama was wonderfully built up. In 2004, we had filmed an 111-minute-episode in a single shot from start to finish. It earned us a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Among all your iconic dialogues, which has been your favourite?
(Laughs) ‘Daya, darwaza tod do’ and ‘ Kuch toh gadbad hai’ — these have become so popular that they sparked off several memes.
What’s next for the show?
I honestly don’t know. Sridhar Raghavan, who was originally the writer of the show, is now looking into its creative aspects. His mind is constantly on the roll. I’m sure he has something interesting up his sleeve.
Lastly, you’ve played the ACP for 20 years. So, when do you get a promotion?
(Laughs) If I get a promotion, I will be stuck behind a desk, which is not something my character would want.
