Aditya Chopra, Shiv Rawail envision seven action set-pieces for Alia Bhatt-Sharvari spy film

Sources say maker Aditya has imagined Bhatt-Sharvari’s spy film as women-led action spectacle; ropes in several stunt directors to create seven fight sequences

We all love a slick action movie where the hero, in a high-stakes sequence, takes down an army of baddies. But what do we love more? Watching a heroine kick butt and demolish the enemy. It looks like Alia Bhatt will serve us just that in her spy thriller. So far, high-octane action has been a signature of YRF spy movies. We’ve heard that in keeping with the ethos, producer Aditya Chopra and director Shiv Rawail have envisioned seven action set-pieces for the yet-untitled movie that will see Bhatt and Sharvari as undercover agents with Bobby Deol playing the antagonist.
Sources tell us that Bhatt’s project, the sixth in the spy universe, is being mounted as a big-budget action spectacle. Apparently, Chopra believes that as the first female-led espionage film from his banner, it will generate much interest among the audiences, particularly women.
A source elaborates, “While Katrina Kaif’s Zoya and Deepika Padukone’s Rubai from the Tiger and Pathaan franchises respectively have been loved by audiences, this marks the first female-led project. So, Aditya is keen to make it a cool action entertainer that sees Alia and Sharvari’s characters as mean killing machines. The filmmaker likes to rope in different action directors so that each set-piece looks distinct. This time, he has brought a mix of experts, including Korean stunt coordinator Se-yeong Oh, Franz Spillhaus, and Indian action director Sunil Rodrigues. While one sequence will see Alia doing martial arts, another will have her in fierce combat with Bobby.”
In her 12-year career so far, this is the first time that Bhatt will be seen in an action avatar in Hindi movies, although she explored the genre in her Hollywood debut, Heart Of Stone (2023). Naturally, she will undergo a gruelling training programme before she rains down kicks and punches.
The source adds, “Shiv plans to take the film on floors after September. Alia and Sharvari will train hard before the shoot begins. Over subsequent offerings, Alia’s character will cross paths with Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, Salman Khan’s Tiger, and Hrithik Roshan’s Kabir from the War franchise.”

Actor Sharvari Wagh is prepping for her second project after her big screen debut with Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2021). While the box-office collections were impacted by the pandemic, her performance did get her noticed. Meeting high expectations after a promising first act, and not having any connections within the industry, could prove challenging and weigh a person down — but not Wagh.
“I don’t want to take any pressure with my next performance. I don’t think any creative process can be justified if you take pressure about what the end result is going to be. You go on set and perform to the best of your abilities. After that, what happens, happens,” she says.
Speaking of the industry, Wagh shares she does feel at home, and the people have been welcoming. “Debuting with a film like that (Bunty Aur Babli 2) puts you on the map, I am really grateful and thankful to the industry. I have received many messages and calls from a lot of people I would love to work with. They are appreciating my work and performance. It’s been a really warm welcome and I can’t wait to collaborate with these people,” gushes the 25-year-old.
But the one compliment she holds close to her heart, came from veteran actor Rekha. She reveals, “I remember, a day after the release of Bunty Aur Babli 2, I got a call from Rani (Mukerji, co-star) ma’am. She said Rekha ji wants to talk to me. I couldn’t believe it. For someone like her to call and speak to me after watching my film, and tell me things like ‘I haven’t seen a screen presence like yours in a long time’, will always stay with me. I have always looked up to her, so for her to say that was the biggest compliment.”

Actor Sharvari Wagh’s first big screen outing, even amid the uncertainty due to the pandemic, was released in theatres. Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2021) saw her star alongside Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji and Siddhant Chaturvedi. She says, “Life has been good since then. I get recognized (by public) sometimes, which is unusual since I’m not used to it. But I’ve been looking forward to such days.”
Wagh says the fact that the film was released in theatres sweetened the deal for her: “We made the film for the big screen... My friends and family were ecstatic to see it in the theatre. I was elated that the people who had supported me for so long would be able to see the film the way we had hoped.”
However, the pandemic naturally had an impact on the film’s box-office collections. The 25-year-old says, “Every film has its fate, and additionally, we have the pandemic. Of course, it was highly disappointing. But I feel that there is nothing we can do after Friday. I am very proud of my film. It gave me an opportunity to showcase my craft.”
The actor has her next film lined up, but can’t talk about it yet: “Choosing a film is easy for me. If I am interested in the story, and if my part has something to tell, it’s a win-win.”

As Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif’s wedding celebrations started with a bang in Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan on Tuesday night, the couple’s family and friends were seen arriving at the destination the day before.
The couple travelled to Jaipur via a charter flight. On landing, Katrina and Vicky were escorted out of the airport through an exit gate reserved for VVIPs, as well as the Prime Minister and President, and permission for using which is given by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security in rare cases. The couple had reportedly wanted to travel by helicopter from Mumbai to Sawai Madhopur, but the local administration did not give them the desired permission to use the helipad.
Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi along with Kabir Khan and Mini Mathur were among the guests who arrived in Jaipur yesterday morning. Also seen at the airport were filmmaker Vijay Krishna Acharya and Sharvari Wagh, who is rumoured to be Vicky’s brother Sunny Kaushal’s girlfriend.
The couple’s sangeet ceremony reportedly took place on Tuesday night, which will be followed by a haldi ceremony today, before they tie the knot, ‘Rajwada’ style, tomorrow.
Punjabi singer Gurdaas Mann, a close friend of the Kaushals, is also expected to be present for the nuptials – the white wedding and the traditional Punjabi wedding ceremonies.

Sharvari discusses taking six years to crack her big Bollywood break with Bunty Aur Babli 2

Six years and a zillion auditions later, this weekend could be deemed a winning one for debutante Sharvari. While one may recall her from Kabir Khan’s The Forgotten Army, she has no qualms admitting that this Friday—the release of Bunty Aur Babli 2—was the one she was waiting for all her life. “My parents have booked out a theatre,” says the actor as we sit down with her for a chat at Yash Raj studios.
It took going through a month-long audition process and “training from casting agent Shanoo Sharma” to crack the part. “When I met the director, I had no idea it was for Bunty Aur Babli 2. Rani [Mukerji] ma’am, the OG on set, showed immense confidence in me and asked me to use my instinct,” says Sharvari, accepting that if she was not part of the film, she would have questioned the casting of the newbies opposite Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan.
Bunty Aur Babli 2 picks up 16 years after the original couple settled into monotony. “The film comes with responsibility. We [Siddhant Chaturvedi and I] had to bring enough to the table to make sure we meet the expectations,” she said, adding that off the camera Mukerji and Khan regaled them with their “stories” from Hum Tum days. “They were bickering, laughing, and it dawned on me that these are the people whose interviews I had read in the papers and [now they were] telling me their personal stories.”
But the journey to her debut movie was not one without struggle, recalls Sharvari. “I have had my fair share of hardships. The only way to continue is to keep going. The sticker that reads, ‘Coming soon in the cinemas near you’ and seeing myself on the 70 mm screen [makes me] excited and nervous. The Forgotten Army got me compliments and assured me that I am in the right profession. I channelled that in my silver screen debut. I have been auditioning with Yash Raj since 2015,” says the actor, adding that doing slow motion walks, saying punch lines, and dancing on screen had always been on her wishlist.

Over a decade after they shared screen space, Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji will be seen shaking a leg to the foot-tapping number, Tattoo Waaliye in Bunty Aur Babli 2. Excited to pair up with his Hum Tum (2004) co-star again, Khan tells mid-day, “Every on-screen Jodi has a unique calling card for audiences. For Rani and me, it has been romantic comedies. We have been lucky to have had chart-busting songs. Hum Tum, especially, had blockbuster music. Rani and I had a blast filming such songs and dancing to them. We definitely needed a song like this one to dance to again. It is a fun party track that will pull people to the dance floor.”
Mukerji credits choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant for putting together a piece that was “cool and relaxed”. “It is a groovy number, and gets stuck in the head when you hear it,” she says.
The duo is accompanied by Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari in the track. “This is my first dance number in a movie, so, it is important for me,” says the Gully Boy actor, adding, “I rehearsed incessantly and put in many hours to nail every step before the camera rolled. I’m glad to have found a dancing partner like Sharvari who is a perfectionist.”
Sharvari too admits that the film marks many firsts for her. “I love dancing, especially to Hindi film songs. This project is a dream come true in every aspect. Sid and I were in awe of Rani ma’am and Saif sir’s sizzling chemistry. We were inspired to bring out our version of a Bollywood power-pair.”
Tattoo Waaliye has been sung by Neha Kakkar and Pardeep Singh Sran, and will release tomorrow.

As mid-day reveals the first look of Sharvari and Siddhant in Bunty Aur Babli 2, duo on being suave conmen

Two days after mid-day revealed the first look of Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan in character in the upcoming film, Bunty Aur Babli 2, we have our hands on the first and exclusive look of co-stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari. The duo joins Mukerji and Khan in the rebooted con franchise, which culminated with the adored characters, Bunty and Babli, getting rid of their unlawful ways. Sharvari, of The Forgotten Army fame, had to imbibe the characteristic traits of Babli, who she describes as intelligent, sassy, and always up for a challenge. In keeping with contemporary trends, her version of the con-woman is tech-savvy — a product of the digital boom.
The actor says, “I was honoured that YRF [Yash Raj Films] saw in me [the potential to play] Babli. She is an iconic character, thanks to Rani ma’am’s incredible act in the first film. I am a fan of her work and hope that I have done justice to the role. Since my character is set in this day and age, I have played it with my own sensibilities. This is my big-screen debut and I am eager to see the responses that my performance evokes.”
Chaturvedi’s Bunty too is versed with technological advancement. Described as a suave and smart conman from the big city, his ability to disguise himself makes him a chameleon, and his digital acumen makes him a master of heists. His avatar of Bunty is in stark contrast to that of Khan, who, while sharp-witted, is unaccustomed to using technology.
“This film is important because it showcases me as a Hindi film hero for the first time,” says the Gully Boy actor. “I have waited for this moment for a while and look forward to seeing the industry’s reaction. It is a huge project to be part of, because we have grown up watching this film’s previous instalment.”
While understanding the psyche of the character was one part of the task at hand, Chaturvedi, who belongs to the state of Uttar Pradesh, did not require prep-work to comprehend the milieu that the film is set in. “I understand the aspirations of the youth hailing from these parts of our country, so, I was sold on the film immediately.” The movie releases on November 19.

It has been a busy week at Yash Raj Studios in Andheri. After Sanjay Dutt's Shamshera reached the finish line, Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji brought their con caper Bunty Aur Babli 2 to a close. The makers were only a song shy of calling it a wrap on the project in March when the lockdown compelled them to defer the Mumbai schedule. After an unforeseen six-month break, director Varun V Sharma resumed his place behind the camera last week to shoot the dance number.
Besides adhering to the state government's on-set guidelines, the production house undertook additional safety measures, thus ensuring a secure environment for the cast and crew. The director reveals that producer Aditya Chopra greenlit the stint only after he was satisfied with the precautions laid in place. "The entire cast and crew underwent a Coronavirus test before the shoot. During the week of filming, the actors practised self-isolation at home. The crew was quarantined in a hotel, with the studio arranging their transportation to and from the hotel. The drivers were tested and quarantined with the crew as well," says Sharma.
Khan, who — along with Mukerji, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh — headlines the sequel to the 2005 hit of the same name, got a taste of filming in the post-COVID world. "These are highly sensitive times. Everyone on set has to be cautious because there is a risk element. I was amazed by the steps taken to ensure that we have a safe experience." Mukerji, on her part, says that she was eager to reunite with the team after the extensive Abu Dhabi schedule earlier in the year. "It brought back so many memories of us filming before the pandemic," she exclaims.
The unusual circumstances can hardly dampen Wagh's excitement as she makes her Bollywood debut with the crime comedy. "There was no better way than a fun song shoot to bring the house down with positivity and joy," she says as Chaturvedi chimes in, "I'm glad we could have a safe shoot because of the steps adopted by the production house."

Originally planned as an outdoor number, sources say Bunty Aur Babli 2 makers reimagine song to shoot at YRF Studio

Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh had completed shooting a major chunk of Bunty Aur Babli 2 in Abu Dhabi before the Coronavirus lockdown was announced. Now, debutant director Varun V Sharma has gone back to the calendar to map out the con caper's last schedule, which includes filming a special number with the leads. While the song was originally envisioned as an outdoor shoot, it is learnt that the makers have now decided to film it at the Yash Raj Film Studios, keeping the safety guidelines in mind."The song is one of the highlights of the film. After much deliberation, Varun and producer Aditya Chopra decided that shooting it within the premises, with a minimal crew, would be the best course of action. That way, they will have the advantage of a controlled environment, making it easier to adhere to the guidelines. The track will be shot in August once the permissions are in place," reveals a source, adding that the remaining patchwork shoot will also be conducted in the Andheri studio.
Yash Raj Films remained unavailable for comment.

After filming a major portion of Bunty Aur Babli 2 in the city over two months, Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji have headed to Abu Dhabi to shoot the climax of the con caper. For a film that hinges on its leads outwitting those around and pulling off cons, debutant director Varun Sharma has imagined an elaborate con sequence that requires the UAE capital as the backdrop.
"We are shooting a highlight con in Abu Dhabi. The landscape of the Emirate gives a lot of scale to the film, and the team will spend around 10 days shooting the sequence," informs Sharma. Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh will join Khan and Mukerji in the upcoming schedule.
Bunty Aur Babli (2005) was a heartland fare with Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan's characters shown as small-town con artistes. But Sharma says it was necessary to give a "slick" touch to the sequel. "Since Bunty Aur Babli 2 is set in today's time, we were clear that the cons need to be crafted for today's audience. They will expect something new and slick. The Abu Dhabi con will stand out in that regard."

Newbie Sharvari on bagging Bunty Aur Babli 2 and Kabir Khan's next

"I have grown up watching Yash Raj movies. So, to be signed on by them as a talent is a special feeling," beams Sharvari, evidently overwhelmed at the turn of events. The actor, 22, is the latest talent to be launched by Yash Raj Films and is set to make her debut opposite Siddhant Chaturvedi in Bunty Aur Babli 2.
Even as she kicks off the shoot of the con drama, the youngster is sitting pretty with a second project in her kitty. She has been roped in by Kabir Khan for his web series, The Forgotten Army. Her hard work over the past few years — she served as an assistant director on Luv Ranjan's Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 (2015) and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018) — has come to fruition. "To be announced as a heroine in Bunty Aur Babli 2 and launched as the female lead in Kabir Khan's project, in a matter of few hours, was surreal. It is a validation that I'm on the right track."

The story of two small-town wannabes, Bunty and Babli ruled the box office and the hearts back in 2005. And now the con men duo is coming back on screen in a completely rebooted avatar set in today’s day and age.
The original starred actors Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead role, as two people who turn grifters as they set out on a journey to their dream city, Mumbai. The much-anticipated sequel, Bunty Aur Babli 2, will see a huge time leap of 10 years and introduce a fresh pair as the titular talented scamsters.
Gully Boy fame actor Siddhant Chaturvedi, who shot to fame after playing the dynamic rapper MC Sher in the film, is the new Bunty. Joining him in his exploits onscreen will be debutant, Mumbai girl Sharvari, who has been prepping for her film debut for a year.
Being produced by Aditya Chopra, the film has already gone on floors and will be directed by Varun Sharma, who was an assistant director on films such as Sultan (2016) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017).
“Bunty Aur Babli 2 is completely set in today’s time. Siddhant caught everyone’s eye with his brilliant acting debut in Gully Boy (earlier this year) and became the heart-throb of the nation. We are very excited to have him play the role of Bunty. He is a superb actor, extremely charming and he fits the role perfectly,” shares Varun.
Talking about the leading lady, Varun, who has also penned the sequel, adds, “Sharvari is a special actress to watch out for. She is a powerful performer and you have to watch her on screen to understand what we mean. Given the film and the roles, they are definitely the perfect casting. They are a fresh, hot pair and their chemistry and energy is infectious.”
