Much fun and merry is in store for author-filmmaker Tahira Kashyap Khurrana, who is spending her 40th birthday today with her family and friends at the Gir National Park in Gujarat.

“My family and friends from college are in Gir. Last year, we went to Ranthambore for the safari. We will be back on 23rd from Gir. On 26th, I’m off to Dubai with 15 of my girlfriends. Bada milestone birthday lag raha hai,” she quips.

“My parents used to call all my friends for my birthday party. After I got married, kuch hota hi nahin tha. That’s when reality hits you... With time, you choose who you want to celebrate with,” she says, adding, “It need not be extravagant. Like, this is a small trip to Gir which we are taking and then going out with my girls… It is the big 40, so sab kuch kar rahi hun!”

Professionally, too, it’s a big year for Khurrana. Her first feature directorial, Sharmaji Ki Beti, is lined up for release and then she will start work on her second project.

“It is with Guneet Monga (Kapoor, producer). She was the first person I showed Toffee (short film) to. At that time, I didn’t know her at all. Later, I made Pinni with her and we got to know each other on a deeper level. We feel strongly about many issues. So, I took a script to her and she is on board. I am very excited to start. I am getting back into action as soon as I am back from the trip,” she signs off.

Through all the ups and downs, Tahira Kashyap Khurrana fought for herself and all of us-Saiyami Kher

When Tahira Kashyap Khurrana’s debut feature film Sharmaji Ki Beti went on floors earlier in the year, leading lady Saiyami Kher saw it as a moment of triumph. It took four years for the film, also starring Divya Dutta and Sakshi Tanwar, to go from the drawing board to the set. In an earlier interview to mid-day, Kashyap had revealed how she stood her ground while prospective producers suggested that she include a romantic track to make the film more bankable, and seek more saleable stars. Her search for like-minded collaborators ended when she met producers Atul Kasbekar and Tanuj Garg.

Recounting her casting, Kher says, “A few years ago, Tahira came home for the narration of Sharmaji Ki Beti. She was convinced that I fit the part. Atul Kasbekar and Tanuj Garg were also on the same page. It all felt too good to be true. But like films, our lives also have these twists and turns. Tahira was unwell; it was scary, and heart-breaking. Obviously, the film went on hold. Then COVID [struck] and the world shut down.”

Kher says that the movie saw the light of day due to Kashyap’s resilience. “Through all the ups and downs, Tahira fought for herself and all of us. It never felt like this was her debut feature. We did rehearsals to set the tone of the characters. On set, she gave us the freedom to play around [with our characters].”

With Sharmaji Ki Beti, the director has tried to showcase the different experiences of modern Indian women. “It’s a heartwarming, slice-of-life comedy drama. All I can say is that playing this character ticked off a long-standing dream.”

Ayushmann Khurrana and I don’t impose our ideologies on each other-Tahira Kashyap Khurrana

Tahira Kashyap Khurrana: Never thought of abandoning project

With her long-in-the-making Sharmaji Ki Beti wrapped up, Tahira says she is keen to challenge society’s beliefs with her films and books

Tahira Kashyap Khurrana believes she is a storyteller at heart, the medium does not matter. The writer-filmmaker, whose latest book The 7 Sins of Being A Mother is being talked about, is now focusing on Sharmaji Ki Beti. The multi-generational story — featuring Divya Dutta, Sakshi Tanwar and Saiyami Kher — is her debut feature film after short film Pinni and a segment in Feels Like Ishq. “It took four years [to see the film through]. I fell sick, and then the two lockdowns [delayed matters]. But through it all, the thought of abandoning the project never came to me,” says the director, asserting that every hurdle “made my film better.”

Kashyap is currently riding high on the praise her book is receiving. Through the 145-pager, she talks about the unreasonable pressure new mothers face to get back in shape, the raging hormones, and underlines that mothers are not the superhumans that society expects them to be. “I am unapologetic while writing. I am done with the effort to be pretentious; I don’t want to be holier-than-thou. Whenever I write, my idea is that people should evolve. My way of conveying messages is through quirkiness and humour. When people laugh, the taboo becomes less of a stigma. When I write about how I forgot my baby at a restaurant, I am trying to reduce the judgment and make people realise it’s only human to slip. There is no correct version of being a mother.”

Is there a tendency to practice diplomacy in her writing, since husband Ayushmann Khurrana is a leading star? Kashyap says, “He reads all my material; I read all his scripts. But we don’t need each other’s permission or validation. We don’t impose our ideologies on each other.”
