Age hasn’t affected Shah Rukh Khan's stamina-Prashant Sawant

Shah Rukh Khan’s trainer Prashant Sawant talks about King Khan being fit at 50
Lisa Antao (DNA; January 31, 2016)
Fit at 50
“SRK is fit even at 50 as his metabolic rate is good, he works out well and he’s like an athlete. He wants to look good and he’s dedicated towards his goal,” states his trainer.
Diet
“He is not a foodie so keeping track of what he eats is easy. He follows a high-protein, low-carb diet, and likes grilled chicken, tandoori chicken and salads, and doesn’t indulge in junk food. Even if he’s on vacation, he doesn’t let go of eating healthy,” adds Sawant.
Getting fit
Was SRK fitter when he was younger or is he fitter now? Hasn’t his age slowed him down a bit? “I’ve not seen a great difference in his fitness levels back then and now, his fitness levels have more or less been consistent. He was fit back when he was younger and he’s fit now as well. Age hasn’t affected his stamina,” declares Prashant. “I make him do lots of circuit training, high intensity workouts, cardio, etc. He works out for 45 minutes, usually four times a week but it can also go up to seven days a week depending on the look for his films,” adds Prashant.
Working out, six-pack abs and bonding with Aryan
The actor always listens to his trainer. As for his workouts, the 50-year-old begins with a warm-up, then the main workouts with chest workouts, using machines. He likes doing chest, back and ab workouts. Special strategic workouts are chalked out by Sawant, if SRK requires a six-pack for a particular movie. “And because he’s already fit and the base is already there, he doesn’t need to struggle to get six-pack abs,” says Prashant. There’s no fixed time during which SRK works out. Says Sawant, “His funda is simple: He likes to work-out when his mind is free, after he’s done shooting. Usually around 2 am to 3 am. He sleeps for about four to six hours, and that’s enough for him. SRK loves spending time with his kids, and since the age of two, Aryan has been hanging around in the gym while his father is working out. Now Aryan has grown up and wants to build a good body and so he too, has been training along with his dad since a year. This way, they get to spend quality time together.”
Another actor’s trailer can’t damage my film-Shah Rukh Khan

Asira Tarannum (MID-DAY; October 24, 2014)
On the eve of Happy New Year’s release, Shah Rukh Khan speaks to hitlist on his unparalleled energy and how he is too involved to be hassled about competition. Excerpts:
You work round the clock— meetings, shoots, performances, travel — and now you are giving interviews at 1:30am...
If you stop, you cannot do so many things together. I am not time bound and neither does time bound me. If I take something up, I ensure that I complete it on time, no matter how long we have to work on it. I don’t look at my schedule; if I am told that something has to be done, I do it. I enjoy working on a tight deadline.
There is a lot of buzz about your eight-pack abs, which you will flaunt in Happy New Year, and that you got a special machine for workout.
Time management is difficult for some people because they think of a day as 12 hours. I think of the day as 16-18 hours. When I go home, I like to spend time with my kids. So if am shooting too late, I’ll miss them and call them up. If I have a day off, then I don’t do my office work at home. I don’t answer calls. So, I exercise at 12am.
There were reports that AbRam has made an appearance in Happy New Year…
Not really. Farah (Khan) has just got a shot of her kids playing with AbRam on the sets. That has been used for the end credits song sequence. Even Gauri is there in the shot.
PK's theatrical trailer has been attached to Happy New Year and comparisons are being made. How do you see this in your scheme of things?
It is okay. Why should it be an issue? We actors are so involved in our own work that we don’t have time to see what the other person is doing. Honestly, when Singham Returns was releasing, the marketing team suggested that we attach our trailer with it. We went and bought it from the exhibitors but then Ajay called and offered to do it for free, which was an amazing gesture. So, now I do that and it’s illogical to think that others won’t do it for you. If someone thinks another actor’s trailer is going to damage my film, it’s stupid.
You were one of the first celebs to own a cricket team and now many stars are supporting various sports. Any plans to be involved in other games?
We actually have a sports company — a professional team of 20 people working round the year for sports. It was formed during the initial seasons of IPL. We won two (IPL) championships, we have almost broken even and are doing well. Whether it’s kabaddi, hockey, football or Formula One, the team looks at it, not because we are buying a stake or to flaunt our celebrity status. We’re running a sports company so we have to look at it like a business. If we have not been involved in other sports leagues it is because we don’t have the resources, manpower or the funding to run two leagues.

Farah Khan raises a toast to new beginnings with her favourite star
Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 13, 2014)
Is Happy New Year the return of Shah Rukh and Farah Khan as friends?
Yes, and it couldn't have been a grander comeback. Jai and Viru are back! We both missed each other. The reason our combo works is because he spends too much money without me. I keep him within a budget.
Who came up with the title?
My husband (Shirish Kunder) had written a script on the Kandahar hijack titled Happy New Year. I took the title from him.
Were you upset over the failure of Tees Maar Khan?
No, I was very happy! (Laughs). Naturally, I was devastated. If you're not bothered about the box office, you shouldn't be making movies. I was flooded with offers but I refused to sign anything. Instead, I started reworking Happy New Year, which I was supposed to make with SRK after Main Hoon Na.
But you were still not on the best of terms with SRK then?
Just as I completed the script, we sorted out the differences. Soon after he called to say, “Make a film with me.“ I mailed him the script of Happy New Year. After a few days, Gauri (Khan) asked me to fly to London to meet him. We met in his new house and finalised the deal.
Was Gauri there?
No, but she was instrumental in our patch-up. My brother (Sajid Khan) had called her and she said I should drop by at their house whenever I want. A few days later, Shirish, Sajid (Nadiadwala) and I went and settled the dispute. After that she came to my new house. She kept the friendship going.
Was Deepika Padukone signed because you needed a star?
Deepika came on board three weeks before we were to roll. I'd auditioned 100 girls before her. Then, I felt that a newcomer wouldn't work. I wanted a star who can hold her own against five men.
Isn't HNY a desi Oceans Eleven?
Far from it. The genre is the same, but there have been so many films on pulling off a heist.
While SRK and Sonu Sood are flaunting their packs,Abhishek Bachchan is looking scrawny...
Abhishek plays a good for nothing drunk, so he doesn't need any packs. Initially, I had only wanted Sonu to reveal his abs but SRK's shirtless scene in Om Shanti Om had proved lucky for me. So we have him baring his body in a song and in his introduction scene. We redid the latter so he could show off his packs.
There's a school of thought that VFX is the secret behind the star's perfect bodies...
It is impossible to have a body like SRK with VFX. He was working on it for over four months. The day he undid his shirt, we were astounded. He did it because he loves me more than others.
You had lost weight for Shirin Farhad but then ...
(Interrupts) I had undergone a tummny tuck, but then I piled on the kilos again. Now, I am lighter again. Recently, I danced during a promotional tour without panting for breath.
Is your next film after HNY going to star SRK?
Yes.
Yes, and it couldn't have been a grander comeback. Jai and Viru are back! We both missed each other. The reason our combo works is because he spends too much money without me. I keep him within a budget.

MUMBAI MIRROR (September 25, 2014)
Following a recent video which was leaked online and would have us believe that Salman Khan's six-pack abs in Ek Tha Tiger were air-brushed in a studio and not chiselled in a gym (Mirror, 22 September), Shah Rukh Khan has now uploaded a video. And this one posts step-by-step evidence that his eight-pack is for real. The 48-year-old actor posted details of his rigorous regime with his trainer.
The actor is seen pumping iron and performing several exercises in the brief clip, with his Happy New Year director Farah Khan cheering on.

Upala KBR (September 11, 2014)
It took SRK six months!
Says Prashant, “There isn’t much difference between building six or eight-pack abs except more hard work. What is essential is right training and passion. People should build their body according to their lifestyle. I don’t have cheat days. Instead, I tell people to diet one day and eat normally the rest of the days. Anybody can get eight-pack abs if they work out as rigorously as Shah Rukh did with discipline, passion and the correct training. I’ve worked with him since Asoka. Training differs from person to how a person and their energy levels. It took Shah Rukh just six months to build his eight-pack abs. It would take a layman a year to do the same. Shah Rukh’s metabolic rate is high, post Chennai Express he underwent shoulder surgery. We started rehab training. Then he met with an accident, hurting his knee on the sets of Happy New Year. It took two-and-a-half months to recover. He couldn’t even lift one pound during that time.”
The SRK way
“SRK worked out for six months rigorously. He has great energy but he wasn’t sure if he could. He is shy about his body. SRK has an athletes body that is required for that. We have a picture of SRK with his six-pack abs in the gym and we both knew that we needed something better to replace that picture. He has always had faith in me and believes in what I ask him to do — whether it’s diets or workouts. He would always follow the new techniques, improvisations and workouts I would set for him. He never questions what I ask him to do. That bonding has helped us achieve impossible tasks. People are going to be shocked that at the age of 49, Shah Rukh has built this kind of body. He’s inspiring lots of people, especially those who are couch potatoes and setting examples for those with medical problems. He’s built this kind of body despite his injuries and is a trendsetter. If he can, anybody can. He has proved that if you’re passionate, determined and dedicated enough, you can. He has immense self-control. He always eats healthy food, is a light eater and isn’t fussy. He always eats the right portions and never overeats, even at parties and during festivals. He’s a true sportsperson — he’s played hockey, soccer in school.
Working it out
He’d work out five days a week for an hour and twenty minutes at 2 or 3 am. SRK is a true Night Rider. We did a combination of functional and strength training along with suspension and weight training. I got these special vibrating dumbbells for him. Other training methods included powerplay techniques which really helped his shoulder and also 10-min cardio. He’d do many stomach crunches. Every month and later, every 15 days, I’d change his workout routine.
