Aashram is like 15-28 films. I have almost 400 minutes of screen time-Chandan Roy Sanyal

Aashram changed things for me, says Chandan
Shaheen Irani (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 13, 2022)

There was a time when actor Chandan Roy Sanyal felt “lost” and “discontented” with the work he was getting. That, however, changed with Aashram.

Sanyal, who is making headlines for his role as Bhopa inthe web series, is grateful to director Prakash Jha for bringing the project to him. Having played characters with shorter screen time in films, he says, “Aashram is like 15-28 films [in terms of screen time]. I have almost 400 minutes of screen time. That’s how I look at it. That’s what changed for me,” he says.

Looking back at the time when he felt disappointed at not getting “rewards” despite receiving good reviews, Sanyal says, “I just felt weak because even if I was doing a lot of projects, there was discontentment of not getting the rewards.”

But this outlook changed during the pandemic. He adds: “During the pandemic, Aashram (1 and 2) released and then I did Sanak. All three of them did so well that I realised that my own thoughts were coming in the way of my success. I got an opportunity to restart, rework on myself and see where things go.”

The OTT space has worked well for Sanyal, much like many other actors. He believes that the shift in focus from stars to content, has given the right opportunities to talented artistes and given them recognition.

Next to be seen in director Navdeep Singh’s web show, Sanyal wishes to explore other genres, especially comedy, in the future. “I’m not a villain but a comedian,” he signs off.

2021 Recap: Top 5 action films of Bollywood

Action is a genre that has a universal appeal. Despite fewer films being released in the year due to the pandemic, we got a chance to see some great action-packed films. In this special feature, we have chosen the five best ones which in our opinion had the best fight scenes.

1. Shershaah
A war drama needs to get its action right. The battle scenes (by Stefan Richter and Sunil Rodrigues) were not too gory, added to the excitement and moreover, looked very authentic.

2. Sanak
Vidyut Jammwal is a pro when it comes to action and in Sanak, his action scenes went one step ahead. Action director Andy Long Nguyen came up with some novel fight scenes, surprising his viewers.

3. Sooryavanshi
Since it was a Rohit Shetty fare, one expected to see mind-blowing stunts and in this regard, Sooryavanshi didn’t disappoint. What was also impressive was that the story jumped from Jaisalmer to Bangkok, and the action in all the sequences was well woven and in sync with the principle plot.

4. Squad
Nilesh Sahay directed this fare and he was also credited as the action director of the film. In the latter category, he managed to impress the audience with the visually stunning and not-so-gory fights and stunts. Rinzing Denzongpa also seemed apt in the action avatar.

5. Antim - The Final Truth
The film had two action directors, Vikram Dahiya and ANL Arasu. Both managed to up the entertainment quotient. Special credit should go to ANL Arasu who directed Salman Khan’s intro fight scene. It led to a lot of whistles and claps in the theatres and was an apt Salman Khan entry fight sequence.

It was a big win to be back on Roadies when Mehr was 45 days old, and breastfeed her through its making-Neha Dhupia

Neha Dhupia: Don’t need to sacrifice professional dreams

Returning to Sanak promotions within two weeks of welcoming baby boy, Neha proud to be among working mothers who are redefining the industry norms
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 16, 2021)

When we get on a call with Neha Dhupia, we hear the newborn’s cries before the actor’s voice. Naturally then, we begin by asking if she has decided on a name for her son yet. “Angad [Bedi, husband] and I keep vetoing each other’s suggestions, and are yet to find a middle ground,” laughs the second-time mother.

After welcoming her baby boy on October 3, the actor soon threw herself into the promotions for Sanak that dropped online yesterday. “Angad is shouldering a lot of responsibilities with Mehr [daughter]. The little one is more dependent on me right now.”

Sanak is a typical Vidyut Jammwal fare, loaded with action. “While it’s very much his film, I play a cop and have a strong [track]. It was only towards the fag end of filming Sanak that I realised I was pregnant. I shot the film in my first trimester.” Dhupia also plays a pregnant cop in her next, A Thursday.

Taking a sabbatical was out of question for her during both pregnancies. She asserts that it’s essential to change societal attitude and show that motherhood has little impact on one’s professional life. “They make us stronger, not weaker. We don’t need to sacrifice either professional dreams or personal aspirations. I shot a movie when I was eight months pregnant. I did that because I had become another person the first time around. I didn’t want to go there again. I didn’t want to be in a dark and lonely space, sitting at home. I focussed on being happy.”

Dhupia is proud that she pulled off two movies during her pregnancy. “It was a big win to be back on Roadies when Mehr was 45 days old, and breastfeed her through its making. But is there scope to make it more inclusive for women to start families? Of course. We could be more relaxed if our personal decisions didn’t affect our careers.”

(Crisp) Movie Review: SANAK by FENIL SETA

Sanak has an interesting concept and is executed neatly and simply. We have already seen Vidyut Jammwal attempting death-defying stunts. But this time, his action scenes are novel and out of the box and the various props seen in the hospital are well utilized. At a couple of scenes, I was amazed and had I seen it in cinemas, I would have surely clapped and hooted! Sadly, the film drags in the last 30 minutes. This 116 minute long film ideally should have been 90 or 100 minutes long for a better impact. A few questions remain unanswered and at a couple of places, the logic goes out of the window and how. The dialogues in the romantic scenes are also quite childish. Speaking of performances, Vidyut Jammwal, as always, is in his element. Rukmini Maitra makes a confident debut in Bollywood. Chandan Roy Sanyal is terrific as the baddie. Neha Dhupia is apt for the role. Chandan Roy (of Panchayat fame) is hilarious and the surprise of the film. Kiran Karmarkar gets no scope. Harminder Singh Alag (Zubin) is likeable. The foreign actors - Daniele Balconi, Ivy Haralson, Alois Knapps and Du Tran Au – do well. Sunil Palwal is decent in a small role. All in all, Sanak is a timepass entertainer. This is a film made for cinemas. Now that the theatres are opening in Maharashtra, I hope this is the last massy film which has gone directly on digital.

My rating - *** out of 5!

3 DIGITAL FILMS TO CLASH ON THE DUSSEHRA WEEKEND

Dussehra has become an important festival for filmmakers as it has been observed that audiences throng cinemas in hordes during this time. Sadly, with cinemas shut in Maharashtra till October 22, this Dussehra, we’ll see a clash of three significant films on this festival on digital. My analysis on these three films:

1. RASHMI ROCKET: It stars Taapsee Pannu, Priyanshu Painyuli and Abhishek Banerjee and is the story of a celebrated athlete whose life turns upside down after facing humiliating allegations. It is directed by Akarsh Khurana, who last directed Karwaan. The trailer of this film is quite arresting. It starts off with an indication that it’ll be just another sports film. But then it takes a shocking turn as Taapsee’s character is accused of being a man! If made well, it has a high chance of getting a high viewership. It releases tomorrow (October 15) on Zee5.

2. SANAK: It stars Vidyut Jammwal, Rukmini Maitra, Neha Dhupia and Chandan Roy Sanyal. Like most films of Vidyut, this film is also produced by Vipul Shah. It is a tale of a man whose wife has just undergone a life-threatening operation when the hospital is taken over by a ruthless villain and his men. The trailer is very entertaining. Vidyut’s stunts seem better and more fun this time. This is a film that would have made for a great watch in cinemas as it looks like a mass entertainer. Shockingly, it releases tomorrow (October 15) on Disney+ Hotstar but the buzz about the film is very low. Many are not aware of the film and that it's releasing the next day.

3. SARDAR UDHAM: It is based on the life of freedom fighter Sardar Udham Singh and is directed by Shoojit Sircar. Vicky Kaushal plays the lead. Sardar Udham Singh played an important part in our freedom struggle but not much is known about him. Hence, the film is at an advantage. Also, it looks like a rich product matching international standards. On the flipside, it also looks quite niche. It doesn’t follow the conventional and massy format of filmmaking that audiences are used to. It remains to be seen if it manages to get widespread viewership. It’ll release on Amazon Prime which has left no stone unturned in promoting the film. Surprisingly, it’ll arrive digitally a day after Dussehra, on October 16.

I am not an arrogant person who will say, ‘Let the producers lose money. We will release Sanak only in theatres’-Vidyut Jammwal

Vidyut Jammwal: Playing MMA fighter for the first time on screen

Game to experiment with different forms of action, Vidyut Jammwal says he has upped the ante by attempting mixed martial arts in Sanak
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; October 13, 2021)

As is the case with most Vidyut Jammwal-starrers, Sanak sees the one-man army take on a gang of baddies. The focus naturally is on the leading man’s action prowess as he brings balletic action and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to the screen. “I am playing an MMA fighter for the first time. So, [I had] the responsibility of displaying MMA perfectly on screen. Our cinema is watched by the international audience. For me, it’s a huge achievement when global action reviewers say that the stunts are flawless and of international standard,” begins the actor.

The Kanishk Varma-directed venture sees the actor play a common man whose wife, along with other patients, is held hostage in a hospital. In a Jammwal-led film, stunts are never restricted to run-of-the-mill kicks and punches. Here too, he says he had the responsibility to raise the bar with the elaborate set-pieces.

“I prep more than anybody else [I know] and invest a lot of time to get [each sequence] right. For instance, one of the scenes was set in a physiotherapy room. We were wondering how we can do something different [within the set-up]. I thought, why can’t we do something with the stability ball? That’s how the scene was choreographed around the ball. A lot of effort has gone into making it look effortless.”

The film, also starring Neha Dhupia and Rukmini Maitra, will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar. Even as he admits that watching action extravaganzas on the big screen has its own charm, Jammwal believes a digital premiere is a prudent move at this hour. “I am not one of those arrogant people who will say, ‘Let the producers lose money. We will release it [only] in theatres.’ Somebody has bet their money on me, and I want them to earn much more than they have bet. I grew up watching Jackie Chan’s movies, where I would pause the film, rewind a sequence and study his moves. Now that my movie is coming on OTT, maybe young people will watch it and emulate it, just the way I did in my growing-up years.”

Vidyut Jammwal to explore balletic action in Sanak

Vidyut explores balletic action under international stunt director Andy Long for his next, Sanak
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; May 4, 2021)

In a Vidyut Jammwal film, action sequences are hardly restricted to kicks and punches. While the actor has often propagated the martial art form, Kalaripayattu, he will now be seen exploring balletic action in Sanak. Director Kanishk Varma, who recently wrapped up the first schedule in Goa, reveals that the leading man effortlessly took to the modified action form under the supervision of stunt director Andy Long. The international stunt choreographer has previously worked on Jackie Chan’s Dragon Blade (2015), among other films.

“Balletic action has a certain rhythm to it. With Vidyut, it becomes easy to shoot because he is such a brilliant martial artiste in his own right. My brief to Andy Long was that the action sequence should look like a ballet. We wanted to shoot long takes. We have mostly seen Vidyut play a commando in his movies, but here, he essays the role of a common man. How he fights as a common man sets the tone of the action employed in the film,” explains Varma.

Always game to bring a new art form to screen, Jammwal believes the stunts showcased in the Vipul Shah production are “path-breaking”. “It was a conscious decision to create our own niche, using Kalaripayattu as the [base]. The action is original,” he states.
