I am not fluent in Tamil at all and I had no time to learn a new and rich language-Amit Sial

Actor Amit Sial reveals he did a crash course in learning Tamil to play the role of DR Kaarthikeyan in Nagesh Kukunoor’s The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; July 15, 2025)
In The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case, Sony LIV’s gripping investigative drama, Amit Sial plays SIT chief D R Kaarthikeyan, the man tasked with leading the mammoth investigation. The role brought back vivid memories for Sial, who was 16 and in school when the tragedy occurred. “My earliest memory is quite vivid. I also had a few faint memories of Indira Gandhi’s assassination seven years before this. There was a lot of discussion, while information flow wasn’t as fast as it is today. We received a lot of filtered information about what happened and who was responsible. There was shock and bewilderment all around me and in the country at that time.”
Though the series is based on Anirudhya Mitra’s book 90 Days: The True Story of the Hunt of Rajiv Gandhi’s Assassins, Sial chose to focus more on the man — who he never met — his personality, and demeanour than the investigation.
“I did not have much time to go into the investigation per se, which wasn’t even required at the time because [the series] is based on a book, and the script was detailed enough. So I thought it was better to focus on D R Kaarthikeyan, who is alive, and do justice to his personality.” He watched interviews, studied his body language and tone, and noted, “his physicality and attitude.”
He adds, “I was the last to come onboard. I barely had three weeks to prep. I think they got a little overconfident in what I was doing.”
Portraying Kaarthikeyan also meant speaking Tamil, something the actor felt was “tough and nerve-wracking” in the short time. “I am not fluent in Tamil at all and I had no time to learn a new and rich language. I was damn scared because I am playing a real-life person. It is a huge responsibility so I cannot do my own thing.”
He credits Raja, the AD (additional director) on set, and co-star Sahil Vaid for helping him learn and polish the lines.
On working with director Nagesh Kukunoor, Sial says, “He is one of my favourite directors. I call him sajjan purush. He is a sweet, patient, and well-read intelligent guy which shows in his work... I think my face matched DR Kaarthikeyan more than anything else. He probably thought I’d figure out the rest.”
Initially, I thought my Shershaah role was very small but I had no second thoughts after reading the script-Sahil Vaid

Sahil Vaid admits there were no second thoughts after reading Shershaah’s script
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 26, 2021)
Having starred in films such as Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017) and Dil Bechara (2020), Sahil Vaid now feels “at home” in Bollywood, and add to that one controversy. The actor claims he was misquoted in a recent interview as saying that he “regrets” doing such a small role in his latest outing, Shershaah.
“Initially, I thought the role was very small. But, when I read the script and met the director (Vishnu Varadhan), I had no second thoughts. It was a no-brainer,” he tells us.
But, was he okay to take up a role with this kind of screen space, given the repertoire of films over the years? “That’s exactly why I used the word reluctant,” clarifies Vaid.
“When I learnt about the story, I had to be a part of this film. There are some characters you just have to do, as an actor. Sunny (his role, late Captain Vikram Batra’s best friend) was there at the shoot in Palampur (Himachal Pradesh), he said I’ve done complete justice,” adds the 34-year-old, who believes ego should be kept aside for such important parts.
His journey so far, Vaid feels, has been pretty smooth. “I believe it’s necessary for actors to keep doing what they are doing. A lot of times, big names have stopped working and say, ‘Ab chhote roles nahi karne, want to do big roles’. They keep telling me that was kind of their end in the industry,” signs off Vaid, who will next be seen in Satyameva Jayate 2, starring John Abraham.

After a six-month delay because of the pandemic, the Satyameva Jayate sequel kicks off in Lucknow
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 20, 2020)
On Wednesday, John Abraham and Divya Khosla Kumar will flag off Satyameva Jayate 2. The filming of the Bhushan Kumar and Nikkhil Advani production will continue in Lucknow till January 2021.
“On the first day, we will shoot only with the lead pair, but subsequently, other actors like Harsh Chhaya, Gautami Kapoor, Shaad Randhawa, Anup Soni, and Sahil Vaid will join in. We will be shooting across Lucknow, including at heritage structures like palaces and colleges,” informs director Milap Zaveri, all praise for the Uttar Pradesh government. “Some of the live locations will be completely sealed off, so crowd gazers cannot sneak in. Only our cast and crew will be present on the spot.”
He shares that even action scenes will be shot on the streets of Lucknow and he has taken his leading man through all the locations virtually. He lauds John for agreeing to shoot in these tough times. His producer acknowledges the challenge, but is confident stringent SoPs will create a safe shooting environment. “It will be scary for the crew at live locations, but it is important to give our audience some entertainment during this pandemic,” asserts Bhushan, promising that Part 2 will be bigger and better than the 2018 original. “When we decide to take a franchise forward, we have to be ready with larger-than-life stories and characters. This script is a notch higher and Milap has worked rigorously on the action scenes with John during the lockdown.”
His production partner, Nikkhil, who was with Milap in Lucknow, asserts that since Milap has developed the subject, he realised that Lucknow would be an apt setting and relocated the story there. Before Coronavirus struck, SMJ 2 was based in Mumbai. His director confides that John’s roots in the film are in Varanasi and believes that the transition will give the film a pan-India feel, appealing even to viewers in the interiors. They will also be shooting for a few days at a Mumbai studio early next year before calling it a wrap.
Nikkhil, whose production house has completed three films in the last few months, including Kiara Advani’s Indoo Ki Jawani, Kaashvie Nair’s cross-border love story and Akshay Kumar’s espionage thriller, Bellbottom, in Scotland, is confident that this one, too, will be a smooth ride. “Our teams will ensure and take all precautionary measures for the safety of the entire crew,” Nikkhil avers.
The film will open on Eid 2021. “It’s a franchise that celebrates the victory of good over evil and that’s a perfect recipe for Eid. Plus, there’s lots of action, drama and dialoguebaazi,” Milap signs off.
I don't like calling Varun Dhawan & Alia Bhatt star kids-Sahil Vaid

Lasyapriya Sundaram (BOMBAY TIMES; March 25, 2017)
Actor Sahil Vaid has earned
praise from critics as well as the audiences for his turn as Somdev in
the recently-released Badrinath Ki Dulhania. While it might not have
been the lead role, he has managed to grab eyeballs.
In fact, he had also featured in the first installment of the successful franchise, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, as the lead actor's (Varun Dhawan) friend. Though he has persevered for 11 years in Mumbai to hone his acting skills and make it big in the industry, Sahil is not scared of being typecast as a character actor. He says, “I used to have apprehensions earlier. However, I was confident about my training in theatre. People used to tell me that I am going to become a comedian or a character actor. Now that I know the industry well, I hate these categorizations. I dare them to try and stereotype me. After Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, I was offered the same kind of roles, but I didn't become greedy for money and accept them. They can't decide my role for me. When I was three years old, I wanted to be Aamir Khan, why let go of that dream when I am 30?“
The actor, who spent his formative years in Delhi, had done close to 40 theatre productions by the time he had finished his graduation. While Sahil aspires to scale greater heights with each new film, does nepotism in the industry prevent outsiders like him from achieving their dreams? He disagrees, and having worked with Alia Bhatt and Varun in two films, adds, “I don't like calling them star kids. A lot has been said about nepotism. My father did everything to help me be what I am today. So if their parents help them, what's wrong with that?“

The amount of dedication that Alia Bhatt puts in reminds me of Naseeruddin Shah-Sahil Vaid

He featured as Poplu as Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and won everyone’s hearts. Now, Sahil Vaid is back, with the second part of the franchise, Badrinath Ki Dulhania. The talented actor opens up about his experience of working on this film and with Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. He explains why he calls Alia ‘baby Naseeruddin Shah’ and also reveals about his stint as a voiceover artist. Over to Sahil…
How excited are you for Badrinath Ki Dulhania? You just tweeted wherein you wrote that ‘just 8 days to go for the greatest show on earth’!
Yes, I’ve been quite excited although I am trying my best to contain my happiness. Just 8 days are left and it’s really exciting. We shot for the film for around 10 months ago and though it was quite comfortable, it was very hectic too. I myself haven’t seen the film. I’ll finally watch it on Saturday.
You were quite entertaining as Poplu in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. What should we expect from you this time, apart from your new hairstyle?
To begin with, my speech. Our characters are based in Jhansi and obviously, we aren’t really speaking in authentic Jhansli waali Hindi since audiences wouldn’t have understood it fully. Also, I am 6 kgs lighter than Paplu! Moreover, this time, my character is not jobless. He runs a website. To know what exactly it is, you’ll have to see the film!

Since you are originally from the North, was it slightly easier for you than Varun to slip into your character?
Not just slightly, it was very easier than Varun. My naniji is from Agra and so, I have a knack of understanding Hindi spoken in these parts. But we had to be careful because Jhansi ki UP accent will be different from Agra ki UP accent or Kanpur and so on. It’s quite complicated actually especially in the border areas of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
In a recent interview, you called Alia Bhatt ‘Baby Naseeruddin Shah’. What made you say that?
I have worked with Naseeruddin Shah when I was doing theatre and the amount of dedication that Alia puts in reminds me of him. She’ll quietly do her homework and surprise everyone with her brilliant work. She’s highly disciplined.
Was it easier with Varun this time as the ice was already broken during Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania?
Yes and it was Shashank who helped broke the ice. He was kind enough to understand that we both don’t know each other and it will be awkward for both of us. Hence, he did the needful. Post Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, me and Varun Dhawan kept in touch. It’s great fun to work with him. Varun ke saath kaam karke hamesha mazaa aata hai.
Tell us about your experience of falling from the jet ski. The making video was quite hilarious.
Well, the experience of falling in the water was more fun than dangerous, despite the presence of crocodiles. My first thought after falling in the water was that, ‘I told you, Varun’! Varun however was quite apologetic and helped me get back on the jet ski. After changing and getting back on the jet ski, I fell again in the water and this time Varun too fell. The entire unit was cracking up!
Your role in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was appreciated a lot along with the film as a whole. How did your life change?
Strangely, a lot of people felt that the success of the first part was a fluke and that we won’t be lucky the second time. We’ll be taken seriously only when Badrinath Ki Dulhania also emerges successful. Talking about my life, well, people started recognizing me a lot once the film was out. 4-5 months after the film, I thought I had arrived but later, I got a reality check. So it was quite a learning experience.
But at the same time, do you feel lucky that Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was backed by Dharma Productions because of which the film reached to a lot of people?
Absolutely and I was quite lucky. There are lots of good actors around and I could have got lost in the midst. It’s thanks to Dharma that they marketed the film well. However, it’s all thanks really to Shashank (Shashank Khaitan, director). He was my senior and we have done theatre together. He helped me get the role though he did audition me left, right and center. Later, producer Karan Johar liked my audition and that’s how I bagged the part. Interestingly, I didn’t audition for Badrinath Ki Dulhania at all. Shashank called me and said that he has written a role especially for me! But the sad part was that my father passed away 2 days after I got this role.
Which are the other films in the pipeline?
I am a part of Y-Films’ Bank Chor. It should release this year. I have also done a cameo in Maniesh Paul-starrer Baa Baa Black Sheep.
You are also a voiceover artist and you recently dubbed for the upcoming Hollywood biggie Beauty And The Beast. Comment.
Oh yes and it was a great experience. Beauty And The Beast is a superbly made film. This was the biggest dubbing project that I have been a part of. At the same time, I have also dubbed for Kong: Skull Island which co-incidentally releases on March 10, the same day as Badrinath Ki Dulhania!
