Is Daadi Ki Shaadi plagiarized from a Pakistani telefilm? Sadia Khateeb reacts

With days to go before Daadi Ki Shaadi’s release, the Neetu Kapoor, Kapil Sharma, and Sadia Khateeb-starrer finds itself at the centre of speculation. Rumours are rife that Ashish R Mohan’s directorial venture is plagiarized from a Pakistani telefilm by the same name, which was aired in March 2026. Khateeb is unfazed by the plagiarism rumours.

“We announced our title way before [in December 2025]. We did so when we started shooting for the film, and this Pakistani [offering] came much later,” she stated.

The May 8 release revolves around a family’s matriarch who falls in love and decides to remarry, to her family’s surprise. Coincidentally, a similar theme is explored in the Pakistani family comedy.

Dismissing the comparisons, Khateeb clarified, “It’s not that we have copied from anyone. Our Daadi [protagonist] is not [similar to] what we have seen in their trailer. It’s a different plot.”

Daadi Ki Shaadi came Khateeb’s way just when she was seeking a light-hearted subject. What it also brought along was a special co-star in Kapoor. “She is such a delight to work with. Neetu ma’am doesn’t meet you with the baggage of her legacy; she keeps it real. She made everything easy, light, and fun for me.”

Sadia Khateeb says she is safe in Saudi Arabia: My duas are for the world

Actor Sadia Khateeb is among the celebrities currently in the Middle East amid ongoing global tensions linked to the US-Iran conflict. She was in Saudi Arabia with her family when air travel in parts of the region was disrupted.

Sharing an update, she tells us, “I am here and completely safe with my family. Amid what’s happening around the world, prayers are all that I can do. My duas are for the world. May everyone be safe.”

Despite the tensions, the 28-year-old is focused on marking a spiritual milestone: her first Umrah (pilgrimage to the Ka’aba in Makkah). “This year, Eid will be in Medina with my family, and I can’t wait to experience that with them, we are happy and safely placed at the moment,” she says.

For now, Sadia says she is fully immersed in the holy month of Ramzan with her family. “This comes after two physically demanding years... During promotions of The Diplomat (2025), I had to occasionally break my (Ramzan) fasts during interviews. This year, I’m sharing iftar with my mother,” she ends.

Calling acting an uncertain profession, Sadia Khateeb hopes to get continuous work, as she has a lot to deliver

While her debut happened with the 2020 release Shikara, it was this year’s John Abraham-starrer The Diplomat that brought Sadia Khateeb to the limelight. However, she hasn’t yet processed the impact of the film. “I haven’t got the time to sink it yet. I just know that I’ve been very busy lately. I’m continuously shooting and that’s the best thing,” the actor says.

While she does feel happy about the love she has got, especially after the film viewership increased post its OTT release, Sadia admits that she can’t relax just yet.

“I’ve just started out and I’m only three films old. I just feel that I have a lot more in me to deliver, and you are only as talented as the opportunities coming your way. If I’m not given an opportunity, how would I prove myself? I just wish I get to do more,” she says.

The 27-year-old adds that being an outsider, the appreciation comes with a sense of fear too: “When people say something good, it gives me a sense of happiness. But that comes with nervousness, as I worry for the next opportunity where I’d get to deliver to meet the expectations. My only hope is to show the audience that I’m better than what they’ve seen in the past three films. I cannot sit back and relax.”

Sharing how “uncertain and destiny-driven” a profession acting is, she says, “I still don’t know if I will have work tomorrow. It took more than a year for The Diplomat to come out, even with such big names backing it. So, all my calculations failed, because in our industry, nobody knows what works.”

I don’t understand terminologies like mainstream, art, crossover, OTT, TV-Karan Veer Mehra

I’M AN ACTOR
FOR HIRE, SO
WHY THE
LABELS?

As actor Karan Veer Mehra gears up for his Bollywood debut after a long stint on TV, he talks about the new journey and not being impacted by the mediums he is part of

After having explored his craft across TV and theatre over the years, actor Karan Veer Mehra is now gearing up for his big Bollywood break in director Omung Kumar’s next alongside actors Harshvardhan Rane and Sadia Khateeb. “I am currently in the best phase of my life,” he says.

The actor goes on to share how it all started with his stint on a reality show. “I met Omung sir in the Bigg Boss house and told him I’d love to work with him. After winning the show, I met him again and requested to be a part of the magnum opus he was making, and he graciously agreed,” he shares.

While he comes from the TV world, Karan isn’t much into labels attached with different mediums: “I don’t understand these terminologies — mainstream, art, crossover, OTT, TV. I’m an actor for hire, someone who is hungry for good work all the time. So why the labels? I don’t take pressure of these tags anymore. My only focus now is to put all my efforts into the film that I have signed. It’s a big opportunity,” he insists.

Karan’s personal life has also been a point of discussion, be it his old relationships, divorce or his current equation with actor Chum Darang. But the 42-year-old takes it in stride. “Everyone has a journey and this is mine. I have never been unlucky. I have always had people around me who loved me, and I loved them back. I wish the best even for those who are no longer part of my life,” he says.

Despite his foray into films, Karan assures that he isn’t quitting TV: “My focus is good work, no matter the medium. At the moment, I’m booked for the next year and a half. So, I can’t say if in the middle the audience will see me on television.”

She never dreamed that one phone call could change her life, but for Sadia Khateeb, who hails from Jammu, everything changed when she took a gamble on becoming an actor. She made her debut with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Shikara in 2020, followed by Raksha Bandhan (2022) with Akshay Kumar, and the recent John Abraham-starrer The Diplomat. Now, the actor is gearing up for two new projects — Dadi Ki Shaadi with Kapil Sharma, Neetu Kapoor, and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, and another film helmed by Omung Kumar.

After shooting in Shimla for Dadi Ki Shaadi, Khateeb, who has returned to the bay, says, “I just came back from the shoot a day ago, two months after shooting this beautiful film. [While] I don’t know the destiny of the film or mine; I know for a fact that I’ve never had this much fun on a film set before.”

Although she cannot divulge much about the comedy family drama, the actor shares that the film has a “great ensemble”. “I know it’s the most fun I’ve had probably because the character was such. I’m excited about how people will perceive it.” Describing her previous work as intense in different ways, she adds, “Dadi Ki Shaadi is much lighter, but still full of heart.”

For Kumar’s yet-untitled film, Khateeb is working with Harshvardhan Rane and Karan Veer Mehra. Impressed by her director’s creativity, she says, eyes lighting up, “When I went to his office, I thought he is a creative genius. [He has] an artistic office. I’ve only seen his work, which is great, and I’m just looking forward to starting this journey next month.”

I used to send stills of my shots to Ranbir and he would give his feedback-Riddhima Kapoor Sahni

Making her film debut with a family entertainer, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni on the joy of sharing screen space with mother Neetu Kapoor and being guided by brother Ranbir Kapoor

Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives, the third season of Netflix’s popular reality series, showed that Riddhima Kapoor Sahni is comfortable in front of the camera. Unsurprisingly then, she is following in the footsteps of her parents — late father Rishi Kapoor, and mother Neetu Kapoor — and brother Ranbir Kapoor by foraying into movies. She recently wrapped up her debut film, which sees her as the female lead alongside Neetu, and Kapil Sharma.

One’s first film is always special. It is more so for Riddhima as the yet-untitled movie, which revolves around the chaos and hilarity that ensues during a family wedding, sees her play daughter to Neetu on screen. Riddhima reveals that the senior actor, who was first roped in for the project, approached her at director Ashish R Mohan’s behest.

“When mom narrated the story and my role to me, I instantly connected to it. It has everything, tears and laughter,” she says.

The family entertainer, which also stars Tejaswini Kolhapure and Sadia Khateeb, went on floors in April as the team shot in Mashobra and other parts of Shimla. Was she jittery on her first day of shoot? Not really, shares Riddhima.

“I wasn’t nervous or apprehensive at all on my first day of shoot; I was excited. Mom would sometimes give me tips on what to do, which were helpful. We had fun working together; we’d rehearse our lines together. She is not used to seeing me crying. So, when I’d cry on camera, she used to get emotional. My husband [Bharat Sahni] and daughter [Samara] were with me. I used to send stills of my shots to my brother [Ranbir] and he would give his feedback too.”

Clearly, the fashion and jewellery designer has enjoyed her brush with acting. Does this mean a new Kapoor has joined Indian cinema that has been dominated by her family over generations? Will she pursue movies and web series?

“Never say never,” Riddhima smiles. “I enjoyed the process of acting and filmmaking, and I am happy with the way the film has shaped up. Through the journey of this film, I have evolved so much as an actor and a person.”

HT City Exclusive: Akshay Kumar's sisters in Rakshabandhan revealed

HINDUSTAN TIMES (June 21, 2021)

As Akshay Kumar’s Rakshabandhan becomes the first film to restart shoot in Mumbai, we introduce you to four fresh faces who will play Kumar’s sisters in the film — Deepika Khanna, Smrithi Srikanth, Sadia Khateeb and Sahejmeen Kaur.

Anand L Rai, the film’s director says, “Rakshabandhan isn’t a project, it’s an emotion, and I wanted fresh faces for a reason, so that these emotions should come without any baggage. They should look like neater characters, with nothing to identify with in the past, but can make you feel emotions. And it’s always an exercise and exciting process for a director to discover actors. I knew I’m doing something which Akshay sir will enjoy and these fresh faces will look good, too.”

Rakshabandhan, also starring Bhumi Pednekar, is presented and distributed by Zee Studios in association with Alka Hiranandani and Aanand L Rai. The film is a Colour Yellow Production in association with Cape of Good Films. It is directed by Aanand L Rai and written by Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon.
