Satish Kaushik arranged for my wife to fly to Bhopal and organised a surprise birthday party for her-Rumy Jafry

Bollywood scriptwriter and filmmaker Rumy Jafry recalls how he and Kaushik became close friends
As told to Hiren Kotwani (MID-DAY; March 10, 2023)
I was quite young then and wanted to see a film shoot. A common friend introduced me to Satish ji, through whom I got to visit the Versova set of Mr India. We became close friends after working together.
We collaborated on all his hit characters, like Mutthu Swamy (Saajan Chale Sasural) and Pappu Pager (Deewana Mastana). Even if you gave him two scenes, he would make them memorable. He would inspire you to do better work.
Over the years of working together on so many films, we became a family. Once, we were shooting in Bhopal, and I couldn’t rush back to Mumbai for my wife’s birthday. So, Satish ji arranged for her to fly to Bhopal and organised a surprise party for her. He also sang her a beautiful song.
Satish ji was such a lajawab person. He is one of those few people whose name brings a smile to the face. When you talk about him, you remember him fondly with a smile because he was such a positive person.
While Abhishek is far more jovial on the set, Amitabh Bachchan sir is professional and humble-Kookie Gulati

Months after directing Abhishek in The Big Bull, Kookie works with Big B on Chehre song
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; August 25, 2021)
When director Kookie Gulati wrapped up The Big Bull with actor-friend Abhishek Bachchan, he had little idea that he would be collaborating with his father Amitabh Bachchan within a few months. The director, who has helmed over 300 music videos so far, says giving shape to the title track of Chehre was special for obvious reasons.
“Anand Pandit [producer] and Rumy Jafry [director] were looking for a director to helm the title track. Abhishek suggested my name. It was an emotional moment for me when I shot with Bachchan sir. After we filmed the video, I folded my hands and bowed to him,” says Gulati.
Having worked closely with the father-son duo, the filmmaker says they are more alike than different. “While Abhishek is far more jovial on the set, Bachchan sir is professional and humble. He would call me Kookie sir. But the moment the camera rolls, their involvement is 200 per cent. They transform into their characters.”
Working with the veteran actor has been a lesson in dedication for Gulati. “We were to shoot for four to five hours, but Bachchan sir got so involved that he shot for far longer. He shared his inputs. For a shot, I wanted the camera to move while he remained stationary, but Bachchan sir said he would walk, thus conveying more through his body language. His suggestion [enhanced] the sequence.”

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; April 7, 2021)
Amidst the pandemic, while cinema halls were struggling to receive better footfalls, there were some filmmakers who took the risk of releasing their movies in theatres, and there were others who were ready to roll out their projects too. One such film was Chehre starring Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi. The film, directed by Rumy Jafry, was set to release on April 9. However, with the recent announcement of theatres being shut till April 30, due to rising Coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, this film, along with a few others, has pushed its release date.
Talking about it, Rumi says, “We have made a good film, so it is necessary to be a little patient. Having said that, it is going to be the producer’s call about when to release the film, but yes, we, including Mr Bachchan, decided ki film release hogi toh theatre mein hi hogi. It will definitely have a theatrical release.” When asked if they have come up with another date for the release, the filmmaker says, “Well, not yet. It’s too early to say anything.”
Amitabh Bachchan reminds you nothing should be taken for granted-Emraan Hashmi

Counting himself lucky to work with screen idol Amitabh Bachchan in Chehre, Emraan Hashmi on how veteran’s passion for cinema rubbed off on him
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; March 27, 2021)
Emraan Hashmi has no qualms in acknowledging that the decision to be part of Chehre was prompted by the fanboy rather than the artiste in him. After all, the Rumy Jafry-directed mystery drama offered him the rare opportunity of working with Amitabh Bachchan. “The man is a megastar with four decades of relentless work behind him. Indian cinema begins and ends with his name. In my formative years, I looked up to him. On set, he would be sitting next to me, unaware of how he has shaped my worldview,” says the actor.
After seeing Bachchan’s passion for cinema, one inevitably wonders if they will have the same drive at 78. Hashmi asserts that his commitment to the craft runs deep. “I have ambition, but I don’t know whether it will be enhanced, or fade away after 35 years. I aspire to have his drive. I remember we were stuck in a blizzard in Slovakia, and he didn’t go back to his car for five hours, instead shooting with us. He reminds you that nothing should be taken for granted.”
With the entertainment industry hitting the pause button in 2020, it gave Hashmi time to reflect on his two-decade career and brought about a shift in his perspective, which will soon reflect in his choice of projects. “Four years ago, I was doing films at a higher frequency. But I don’t want to be offered similar scripts. It takes time for fresh [stories] to come your way,” says the actor, who had a masala potboiler in Mumbai Saga, and will follow it up with Harami and the third instalment of Tiger.
Ask him about the fate of the second season of Bard Of Blood, and he says, “It’s easy to adapt a book, but trickier to extend it beyond the pages. There was a lot of writing, and tearing of pages. At the moment, it’s not happening. But Netflix and Red Chillies are the best people to crack the idea and take it further.”

Central agency will reconstruct incident, examine accused
Abhishek Sharan (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 21, 2020)
A CBI team from Delhi, along with experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory of India (CFSL), reached Mumbai on Thursday evening to start its probe into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The team is likely to undertake a reconstruction of the incident at the late actor’s Bandra flat, where his body was found hanging on June 14.
Sources said the agency will examine case records and evidence, including autopsy report, case diary, panchnama and statements of 56 people recorded earlier by the Mumbai police. The agency may meet Mumbai police’s team conducting the accidental death probe.
The agency’s team is also likely to question the accused in the case, including Rajput’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, and witnesses.
The agency will question the four people who had found Rajput’s body about what had transpired in the flat on the day of the incident and hours/ days before that to understand the circumstances related to the suicide and for its reconstruction, sources said.
The CFSL team will accompany the CBI team to Rajput’s Bandra flat to trace/gather forensic evidence, the sources said. The CBI team is led by Superintendent of Police (SP), Nupur Prasad, and around a dozen CFSL officials.

Officers of the central agency will do a detailed enactment of Sushant Singh Rajput's last moments, with all the witnesses present in the house
Faizan Khan (MID-DAY; August 21, 2020)
A day after the Supreme Court paved the way for a CBI probe in the Sushant Singh Rajput case, the 16-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the central agency landed in Mumbai to take over the probe. Sources said CBI officers will visit Mont Blanc building where the actor allegedly committed suicide and recreate the incident in the presence of witnesses.
Deputy Inspector General of CBI's Anti-Corruption Wing in Mumbai, Suvez Haque has been appointed as the nodal officer to coordinate with the city police. Sources said that he has already contacted the Mumbai police for all the case files and documents, which will be submitted to the SIT. The SIT will be led by senior IPS officer Manoj Shashidhar and will include DIG Gagandeep Gambhir, SP Nupur Prasad and DSP Anil Kumar Yadav. Meanwhile, sources said that the state government was unlikely to challenge the SC verdict.
Divided Into Three Teams
The sources further said that the CBI would start investigating the matter from the beginning and in order to recreate the incident, they will use a dummy of Sushant's height and weight. The witnesses would be questioned individually and if any contradictory statements come to the fore, they would be interrogated face to face. The SIT has been divided into three teams to speed up the investigation. According to sources, one team will record the statements of witnesses and question actress Rhea Chakraborty and her family, the second team will look into the forensic evidence and meet the doctors who have conducted the post mortem, and the third team will look into the investigation carried out by the Mumbai police. The CBI will also try to ascertain whether the professional rivalry angle is relevant.
"Our investigation will not be limited to the abetment of suicide case. We will probe all possible angles. We cannot comment more as we are yet to see the case file," a CBI officer said.
So far the city police have recorded the statements of 56 people and haven't found any foul play.
'Thoroughly Investigated'"The matter has been thoroughly investigated. Even the doctors' statements have been recorded. The postmortem report confirmed death due to asphyxia. The toxicology report and other forensic reports also ruled out foul play," said a Mumbai police officer. The angles from which the city police investigated the matter include Sushant's depression, his recent relationships, professional rivalry, financial distress and negative media reports.
The investigation team from Bandra police recorded the statements of the actor's family members, his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and others who were close to him. As far as the professional rivalry angle is concerned, the cops recorded the statements of Aditya Chopra, Mahesh Bhatt, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and others. They also recorded the statements of several journalists who have written negative articles on the actor. "Our investigation is still on and if we reach any logical conclusion, we will act accordingly. If we find any evidence regarding crime committed, then we will register an FIR and transfer the case to CBI as per the apex court's order," the officer added.

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; July 25, 2020)
Writer-director Rumy Jafry was among those who were summoned by the Mumbai Police for questioning in the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case. The filmmaker, who was in talks with Sushant and Rhea Chakraborty to star together in a romcom, recorded his statement at Bandra Police Station on Thursday.Rumy told us, “I went there at 3 pm and left at 7 pm. It took a long time because they questioned me about everything in detail.” He added, “From the romcom I was planning with Sushant to his mental health, the police questioned me about everything. I had all details and dates in place about the first time that I met Sushant, when and where we had the narration of the script and more such information. They asked me everything — how the project was planned, who was producing it, how many times we met and discussed the project and whether the meetings happened at my home or at Sushant’s place. I was also asked about his mental health. I spoke truthfully about whatever I knew. I expected I’d be called anytime as I was doing a film with him. Agar sab theek hota toh yeh film floor pe hoti. I am happy that the police is doing a thorough investigation.”
Soon after Sushant’s death, Rumy had told us, “Sushant was gung-ho about the project. He was excited and kept telling me to begin workshops and rehearsals soon.”
Rumy, who has directed films such as Gali Gali Chor Hai and God Tussi Great Ho, added that he was aware that Sushant was seeking help for depression. He had said, “Yes, he did tell me about it. And that’s why, while talking to him, whenever I felt he was feeling low, I’d invite him to my place or I’d go over to his. He was an intelligent man. Main unki kaafi taareef karta tha, unke kaam ko leke. I’d never ask him what was making him depressed, fearing that he might sink in deeper thinking and talking about it.”

Writer-director Rumy Jafry reveals he was to start a film with the duo in May but the pandemic delayed plans
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 16, 2020)
On Sunday, around noon, Sushant Singh Rajput died by alleged suicide, abruptly ending a 10-film career and leaving behind a legacy of sterling performances. He will last be seen on screen in casting director Mukesh Chhabra’s directorial debut, Dil Bechara, the official Hindi adaptation of John Green’s novel, The Fault In Our Stars, opposite debutante Sanjana Sanghi. The film rolled in Jamshedpur in July 2018 and wrapped up in January 2019 in Paris, where they shot at the Eiffel Tower with Saif Ali Khan joining the film’s leads for an interesting cameo.Mirror has now learnt that the 34-year-old actor was gearing up to kickstart a new film, a rom-com directed by Rumy Jafry, also featuring rumoured girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty. “The script was locked and we were to begin shooting in May. The Coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown delayed things,” shares Rumy, who is traumatised by the actor’s sudden demise. “I lost Irrfan Khan, then Rishi Kapoor and Wajid, and now Sushant. I am so disturbed, my father has asked me to return home to Bhopal.”
The director goes ahead to inform that the film would have started in Mumbai, moved to London, followed by an outdoor schedule in Punjab. The shoot was spread over six months and the yet-untitled film was to wrap up in November. “A rom-com, it was to explore Sushant’s dancing skills. He was a fantastic dancer and my film would have showcased him in a different light. He loved Shah Rukh Khan’s acting and Govinda’s dance and that’s why I had a full-fledged dance number with Govinda-style moves planned for our mahurat,” says Rumy, remembering SSR’s spot-on mimicry of his favourite actor, SRK.
Rumy had been in constant touch with Sushant throughout the lockdown. Describing him as a “simple and innocent boy” he recalls how the actor would hang out at his place for hours. “He didn’t have too many friends in the industry but was very passionate about his work. He kept reading my script even during the lockdown and was keen on a joint narration. He was looking forward to starting work on the film soon and every time the lockdown was extended, he would get upset because he wanted to get back to work and rehearse,” recounts Rumy, adding that Sushant had loved his wife’s cooking and also missed their meals together. “I messaged him around four to five days ago, when I learnt that his former manager Disha (Salian) had passed away. I asked him to ‘take care’ and he replied with four hearts and ‘love you sir’, promising to catch up soon.”
Following the success of the Nitesh Tiwari-directed campus drama Chhichhore, a number of other producers and directors were looking forward to collaborating with Sushant. “The industry knew that I was working with Sushant and two big producers sought my help to get in touch with him. I spoke to Sushant, but he wasn’t too keen on meeting them. His response was simple, ‘Sir, picture hi nahin karni hai abhi toh milkar kya karoonga. Jab agli picture commit karni hogi, tab mil loonga.’”
Now that the actor is no more, will he make the film with someone else? “I may never make it; it was written keeping Sushant in mind,” Rumy sighs.
