I couldn’t get in touch with my family in Himachal Pradesh for hours, I was worried-Rubina Dilaik

COULDN’T REACH MY FAMILY FOR HOURS: RUBINA ON HIMACHAL FLASH FLOODS
Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; July 13, 2023)

Rubina Dilaik, who is originally from Himachal Pradesh, is in constant touch with her parents, who live in Chopal. The actress is worried about their well-being and safety following the heavy downpour and landslides in the state.

Rubina says, “I am constantly in touch with my family. They are safe, but the last few days have been very tough. There were major electricity issues and the mobile network was down too. I could barely connect with them from July 9 to 11, when the situation was extremely bad. It is still raining there and there have been landslides, which is scary.”

The actress, who was in Punjab over the weekend, decided to return to Mumbai due to the weather conditions there. She shares, “I had gone to Punjab for some personal work, but there was not much I could do because of the heavy rains. Given the situation, I thought it was best to return to Mumbai, so I came back on Monday night.”

Luckily, our house is not near the riverfront, but when it rains nonstop things get worrisome. The rain has affected the structure of our house as water has seeped in. Many old houses, which are made up of wood, have also been affected. I have some relatives living in Shimla too, and even there, the situation is bad.

The actor, who hails from Shimla, hopes the situation in her home state gets better soon
Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 13, 2023)

As heavy rains wreak havoc in Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring regions, causing flash floods and landslides, actor Rubina Dilaik, a native of Shimla, can’t help but express her anxiety over the terrifying visuals that she has been watching on television.

She says, “The visuals on TV were scary. A few days ago, when there was no network and I couldn’t get in touch with my family for hours, I was worried. But thank God, I have been able to talk to my parents and they are doing fine.”

Amid the ongoing crisis, many of Dilaik’s relatives, who reside in Shimla, have sought refuge at her parents’ farmhouse, located 108km north of the city. The 33-year-old shares, “Our house is situated on the foothills of the mountains, which offers some protection. But, landslides are a constant threat. Fortunately, there have been no major losses so far.”

Speaking about the water scarcity situation in Shimla, Dilaik highlights, “There is a shortage of drinking water as the main water source for the city is flooded; the government is supplying water to people through tankers.”

Dilaik also sheds light on the alarming situation caused by extensive construction in the area: “Bahut zyada construction ho gaya hai. Now, due to heavy rains, the soil has become too loose. People are alarmed and worried about the foundations of their homes.”

COULDN’T REACH MY FAMILY FOR HOURS: RUBINA ON HIMACHAL FLASH FLOODS

The impact was so high that I was in shock for a few seconds-Rubina Dilaik

Rubina Dilaik opens up about recent accident

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 13, 2023)

She narrowly escaped a fatal situation when a truck rammed into her car at a traffic signal in Mumbai on June 10. And living to tell us the tale is actor Rubina Dilaik.

Sharing the details, she says, “My car was slowing down since the signal had turned yellow, when suddenly I had this jerk from behind. This is next to Inorbit Mall in Malad. My head hit the seat ahead, and then I got back and landed on my lower back. The impact was so high that I was in shock for a few seconds. Then Abhinav (Shukla, actor-husband) came and managed the whole situation.”

Dilaik says that the first thing he did was take her to the hospital and get medical tests done. “Everything was good in the tests, thankfully. When you go towards Andheri, between Bangur Nagar and Hypercity, I have seen this many times: people don’t stop or obey the signal,” says Dilaik, adding, “I have taken legal action against that truck driver. If we let go of such things, we become irresponsible for not putting them out there. One of my friends was in a cab a few days ago with her five-month-old daughter when a car rammed into theirs. They were waiting for the signal too.”

You have to love yourself even with those few kilos and bulges-Rubina Dilaik

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 25, 2021)

Actor Rubina Dilaik is calling out people for fat shaming her, and has no intention to mince her words. The actor, who recently took to social media to make a statement about it, tells us, “The idea was to tell others that don’t get pressured by these trolls.”

Dilaik shares that she was compelled to react only when the haters involved her family. “There are times when we need to tell people of their boundaries... They tag my parents, husband, sisters, and cousins that ‘Tell Rubina she is not working hard, she is looking old, has gained weight’. Nobody has given you the right to reach out to them,” she says.

She goes on to reveal that she has been dealing with body shaming for a long time. “Earlier, I’d beat myself up for gaining extra inches. Now, I have realised that I’m beautiful the way I am. And it is not coming from a place of complacency, ki maine bahut kuch achieve kar liya, ab toh main jaise bhi dhikhun mujhe koi fark nahi padta,” explains the 34-year-old.

Instead, she is giving herself time to heal from the after effects of Coronavirus. She contracted the virus in May this year. “My body had gone through a lot. I was bedridden for a month. Covid took almost everything out of my discipline and the kind of health I had maintained, and the first to take the beating are your nails, skin, hair. Even today, I have a tremendous hair fall. But I am recovering. It is a part of life... I need to show self-love. You have to love yourself even with those few kilos and bulges,” shares the actor, who was last seen in singer Inder Chahal’s music video for Shah Rukh Khan.

Blaming social media for distorted ideals of beauty, she has a message for all: “Your shape and size is a phase of your life. Do not lose your internal light. And it’s okay to be on a little heavier side.”

I am very impressed with the Himachal Pradesh government’s efforts for Covid patients-Rubina Dilaik

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 20, 2021)

“Surviving Covid gives you a boost. With that spirit, recovery becomes easier,” says Rubina Dilaik, who contracted Coronavirus recently and is recovering at her home in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The actor still has weakness and joint ache and knows it will be a month before she regains her strength.

“When I learnt I had Covid, I wasn’t afraid, donating plasma was on my mind. If we have to face it, we better do it bravely instead of fearing the virus. I understand it is easier said than done. Fear works on your mind and affects your body,” she shares.

Dilaik reveals though she’s okay being alone, her isolation felt better after 10 days when her sister joined her in quarantine, which gave her moral support. But she did miss her husband, actor Abhinav Shukla, who is shooting for a reality show in South Africa. “Pehle bimar hote the, toh mummy chahiye hoti thi. Ab lagta hai your loved one should be around, holding you. But that is not possible as you are in isolation. I felt he was with me in spirit though he’s been more worried than ever. He arranged everything for me, from medicines to tests to checkups to oxygen cylinders on stand by etc.,” she says.

During this experience, she admits that looking at people amplifying requests, or creating awareness about fundraisers is heartwarming. “Each one helping others is just wonderful. I am doing my best, locally and helping people in the area. I am very impressed with the Himachal Pradesh government’s efforts for Covid patients, which I’ve seen. NGOs take care of everyone and everything, including sanitisation, providing medicines, getting tests done, ambulances and the like. They are steadfastly working to help people. Never have I seen humanity so united,” she concludes.

In the Bigg Boss house, you have to either fight or take flight-Rubina Dilaik

Unnati Joshi (BOMBAY TIMES; February 23, 2021)

After 143 days, Bigg Boss 14 finally got its winner — Rubina Dilaik was crowned the queen of the reality show’s latest season. The Shakti — Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki actress is on cloud nine after her ‘Bigg’ win. “I am ecstatic. I always wanted to reach till here (the finale win). It was a dream, but the feeling of victory is yet to sink in. Kehte hai na, sab kismat ka khel hai, probably I was destined for it. This has been an incredible journey where I discovered myself. And I am very proud of it,” Rubina says.

‘ABHINAV’S SUPPORT MADE ME STRONGER’
Rubina’s husband Abhinav Shukla, who was also a contestant, was seen rooting for his wife at the finale with other contestants. Talking about their reunion, she says, “When I won the show, he congratulated me, we hugged and kissed. It was beautiful to have him there with me. Abhinav’s support made me stronger. Ab main bas destination wedding ke baare mein soch rahi hoon (laughs!). There will be a second wedding, and a journey of a lifetime, which we had promised each other on the show.”

The relationship of RubiNav, the portmanteau the couple earned during their stay at the Bigg Boss house, became a talking point after Rubina revealed during the show that the two had contemplated divorce.

Does she regret talking about it on national television? “Absolutely not,” she says, adding, “The kind of challenges we faced together in the show has made our relationship stronger. In the outside world, you have choices and you can escape, but when you are locked up in a house, you have no choice except to either fight or take a flight. We chose to face the challenges head-on and win it for ourselves and that in turn made us, our relationship and our bond stronger. Having your life partner with you on a show like this definitely provides you with emotional support but to be honest, having your personal life exposed on a public forum is like walking on eggshells. It was a mental and emotional challenge to balance things. Only couples will understand it.”

‘IF JASMIN WANTS TO CONNECT, I WILL WELCOME HER WITH OPEN ARMS’
Rubina’s love-hate relationship with Jasmin Bhasin was another hallmark of the show. Ask her if she wants to give their friendship another shot, and she shares, “I tried to mend our relationship multiple times, even when she came back (in the house) during the family week. But once again, I sensed rejection from her side. Now, I think I will give her the time she needs and if she wants to connect after some time, I will welcome her with open arms. I have left it to her now."

What about Aly Goni? “I will stay in touch with Aly without any doubt. We had a natural connection, I connected with him on a spiritual level and I think he felt that, too. I see our relationship evolving further,” says Rubina.

‘WILL ATTEND RAHUL VAIDYA’S WEDDING IF HE INVITES ME’
On her relationship with Rahul Vaidya with whom she had many tiffs during the show, the actress says she is willing to forgive, forget and start afresh. “For me, Bigg Boss has been a life-transforming journey. The moment I stepped out of the house, I promised myself that I will forgive and forget. I entered the house with a clean slate and I consciously stepped out with a clean slate. So I will start everything afresh, be it my relationship with Rahul or any other contestant,” she says.

So, will she be attending Rahul’s wedding? Rubina replies, “If he invites me, I would definitely go. But I don’t think we are that close, he might not invite me (laughs!). I just want to wish him and Disha (Parmar) all the best for their life ahead.”

Rubina is now looking forward to spending some quality time with her parents. “They flew down from Shimla for the finale, I want to be with them for some time. Also, for the next few days, I am only going to sleep and eat (laughs!)," she says.

I would’ve been happier to be on the winning side, but there can only be one winner-Rahul Vaidya

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; February 23, 2021)

Rahul Vaidya started his Bigg Boss journey not knowing that he would be in the top two at the finale. He is the runner-up of Bigg Boss Season 14, while Rubina Dilaik took home the trophy. In a conversation with Bombay Times, he spoke about his journey in the show. Excerpts:

Are you upset that you didn’t win the trophy?
I’m happy that my journey in Bigg Boss has ended. I would’ve been happier to be on the winning side, but there can only be one winner. However, I believe in winning with dignity and losing with grace. Honestly, I am very happy that now I can get back to my family and my girlfriend and spend quality time with them. I have done my bit, and being in the top two means a lot. I am so surprised that I am not sad at all.

Do you feel you didn’t win the trophy because you left the house for a few days?
No, I don’t think that is the reason, because people don’t keep these things in mind. There’s no point in you being inside the house throughout and not performing well and I’m sure my competitors, too, messed up a few times. People keep your journey in mind and forgive you for your mistakes. As Salman Khan sir said, we both were at par with each other, but somebody was just a bit ahead. And, I humbly accept the decision of the public.

As a singer, and given that lyrics play a huge role in your profession, how would you describe your journey?
Hum rahe ya na rahe, kal yaad ayenge ye pal, pal yeh hai pyaar ke pal, kal yaad ayenge ye pal.

What was your main goal when you decided to be a part of Bigg Boss and did you achieve what you came for?
I have got what I wanted the show to give me. I wanted to gain new fans and reach more people who had not seen or heard of me. That has surely happened through this platform. An artiste is nothing without his or her fans and I am happy to have found new fans.

You were the runner-up of Indian Idol 1 and now Bigg Boss 14, too. Do you feel that you lack that little luck because you were so close to winning both?
I can probably blame my luck a bit. But I would rather be happy for whatever my luck has given me rather than complain about what it hasn’t. Fifteen years ago, when Indian Idol happened, I was a different person, and now I am a completely different person. I have no regrets.

You were very calm after you re-entered the house, was that a part of your strategy?
Not really. I met my family after I came outside. When I was in the house, I was missing them a lot. So, that comfort of meeting them reflected in my behaviour, I guess.

We saw you mimicking and acting in the house. Do you feel you may have a career as an actor, too?
Let’s see, because one should never say never. If something excites me, then why not?

What is the one quality did you discovered of yours during your stay in the house?
I am very good at handling my temper, and I always been compassionate. I have kept that grace intact and never lose it by getting nasty with anyone.

Did you finally figure the reason behind Rubina and your tiff in the house?
No, I haven’t figured that out yet, but we will think about it, I’m sure, when we both are at peace.

What did your girlfriend, Disha Parmar, say after you were declared the runner-up?
She was really upset. She was sad, but I told her, ‘Baby, it’s fine, and we are all good.’

I always knew that I was an absolute misfit for a show like Bigg Boss-Kavita Kaushik

Roshni Olivera (BOMBAY TIMES; February 15, 2021)

Kavita Kaushik, who is known to speak her mind, entered the Bigg Boss 14 house a couple of months ago with a lot of promise. But things didn’t seem to work out, and one day, she chose to walk out of the house never to return. The actress, who maintained silence so far, has finally opened up. In an exclusive, no-holds-barred interview with Bombay Times, Kavita spoke about all the controversies...

When you look back, do you feel your decision to participate in this season of Bigg Boss was a bad one because it just didn’t work for you?
Indeed, it didn’t work for me! In the 14 years that I was offered the show, during each season, I believed that I was an absolute misfit for it. I knew that I would say something that I wouldn’t mean or walk out. And that’s exactly what happened.

What according to you went wrong for you?
What went wrong was that I had no strategy. I took everyone at face value and was too brash and real. I reacted to every provocation with anger, instead of being cunning and manipulative. I lacked the art of impressing the cameras with my words.

But now, do you feel you should have stayed back in the house rather than walking out after a fight with Rubina Dilaik?
No. I am glad I left because I am not so smart with my words. I realised that I was so done with the fake fights for image building that I could raise my hand on someone in helplessness, and I do not promote violence of any kind.

In my entire journey in the BB house, I never started a fight. Each time, I was provoked to get into an argument, and yes, thereafter, I lacked the shrewdness to watch my words. In anger, I would say things that would take some other turn, leaving behind the actual reason for the fight. I felt this is not who I am, my good qualities are not coming out on the show, so it’s pointless staying inside. I was not so desperate. I was lucky that they gave me the option to leave that day and opened the door. It was like Mahadev ne khulwa diya tha darwaza mere liye. People die to stay in the house, I couldn’t wait to leave.

Rubina and Abhinav Shukla live in the same building as you, and you were friends before Bigg Boss. Now things have soured, particularly after your husband (Ronnit Biswas) tweeted that in the past Abhinav had sent you drunk messages a few times at night. Do you think you guys will patch up anytime soon?
I did not know Rubina, but yes, I knew Abhinav and whatever happened is really sad. I don’t blame anyone. My husband Ronnit felt helpless, when he saw Aly Goni kick a box that injured my leg and arm and then he saw Abhinav telling me laafa maarunga.

When I walked out, Ronnit vented on Twitter, and in his tweets, he mentioned our conversation regarding Abhinav, where I had told him about an unpleasant experience of how our friendship had ended in the past. He later deleted it because when your anger subsides, you know it’s childish and would be embarrassing for both parties to talk about a past equation or a fight. But I also understand Ronnit’s feelings. I don’t hold those messages against Abhinav as we all have done such stupid things. I have done worse, you can make a movie on them! It’s our bad to have spoken about it, however, it’s absolutely not a lie.

Abhinav is out of the Bigg Boss house right now and you may bump into him in your building. How will you react if that happens?
I guess we will ignore each other in the building with better grace.

What about Eijaz Khan? Your comment that the two of you were not friends, as opposed to what he had said, made headlines...
What happened with Eijaz is so surprising. Indeed, he wasn’t a friend, but was an acquaintance and a senior. I did not know him personally at all, he was standing next to me during that conversation that took the nation by a storm, where I was telling Salman Khan how we weren’t friends, and Eijaz asked, ‘Toh mere liye dabba bana ke kyun deti thi?’ And I replied saying that it was during the lockdown when I was checking on one and all. I thought he lived alone and made chicken because he asked me to. Since I was saying it in anger, it sounded harsh. It’s hilarious that people gave the tag of “unkind” to someone who cared compassionately for all. I don’t want to speak about the number of strangers I cared for during this lockdown. It’s highly immature of those misunderstanding this issue as I’ve been around for 20 years and my life has been about an act of giving... if they could just pause and wonder why she said what she said.

Currently, you are on a long road trip. Have you put BB behind you completely?
Why should I put it behind me? A bad decision doesn’t define me, but the lessons it has taught me, will. It taught me some harsh life lessons; I won’t trust easily now, I will definitely do less for strangers and speak correctly, especially when angry. I am on a road trip covering Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. Being in the mountains, jumping into the rivers, visiting my village and staying at my ancestral place has helped me introspect and heal.

On the work front, you have been doing Punjabi films. What about other mediums?
When your career goes on for two decades in a field, it’s natural to feel stagnated. I’ve done most roles I aspired for. I will now do something that gives me the motivation to go on a set. Like I said on BB, I am happy and satisfied.

Even today everyone remembers you as Inspector Chandramukhi Chautala from the TV show FIR. As an actress, where do you see yourself today in the current scenario? Do you see yourself playing a naaginor a daayanon TV?
I see myself doing a dark action-comedy about a misunderstood woman. That will come naturally, yeah? (laughs!)

You turn 40 today. How does it feel?
It feels like Big Bad 40 with na maan ka moh aur na apmaan ka darr!

There’s no divorce happening; Rubina Dilaik & I are stronger now-Abhinav Shukla

Unnati Joshi (BOMBAY TIMES; February 14, 2021)

Right after he got evicted from Bigg Boss 14, Abhinav Shukla left for Kolad, Maharashtra, to beat the fatigue. “I made a short trip to a friend’s farm. This was a much-needed break. I wanted to swim in the river and unwind in the lap of nature,” he tells us.

The actor, who is now back in Mumbai, says he is still getting used to life after Bigg Boss. “When I was inside, I was only communicating with my housemates, and now, suddenly I’m getting so many calls and messages and there’s so much happening on social media, thoda confuse ho raha hoon (laughs!). But I will adapt to it again anyway,” he says.

‘THE BEST PART IS THAT MY FANS DIDN’T VOTE ME OUT’
The last couple of weeks in the BB house were quite eventful for Abhinav. “Maine socha tha Ruby (Rubina Dilaik) aur main finale mein saath mein stage par honge and Salman sir will be holding our hands. I was a little upset because I was so close to the finale. But I guess it’s okay. The best part is that my fans didn’t vote me out,” he shares.

Abhinav was voted out by his co-contestants’ connections, who are currently in the house. While fans called his eviction unfair, the actor feels it’s a part of the game. “It is what it is, one can’t question the design of the game. You have to play it by the rules. There was a task and somebody had to go. Unfortunately, it was me. It’s a game and people get evicted, no hard feelings,” he says.

Abhinav and Rubina’s (aka Rubinav) relationship became the talk of the town when the latter revealed on the show that their marriage was on the brink of a divorce. Talking about it, he says, “Everything is fine now. There’s no divorce happening. The show made us stronger and strengthened our bond. When we were discussing the show before giving it a nod, I jokingly told Rubina that once you see the fights inside the BB house, you might forget the little fights we had. Jo tab humko badi lagti thi, woh actually bahut choti-choti ladaiyaan thi. During our stay in the house, we realised that we were making a fuss about minor issues. Now, when she comes out of the house, hopefully after the grand finale, we will look into our issues and resolve them.”

He adds, “I haven’t discussed our personal issues with our families yet. But I will talk about it, I am waiting for the right time. They are also very understanding, so there is no issue here.”

‘I DON’T KNOW JASMIN BHASIN ANYMORE’
Ask him about his current equation with Jasmin Bhasin, and he says, “To cut a long story short, I don’t know Jasmin (pauses), I don’t know her anymore.” What about Rakhi Sawant? “Rakhi is very smart, she knows what she is doing. But whatever happened inside the house, I have left it there. I have no grudges against her, I will try to move on and erase that memory,” he says, adding, “I have made a few good friends — Naina Singh, Rahul Mahajan, Sara Gurpal — inside the house and will be in touch with them.”

Abhinav says that he is overwhelmed by the support he received, during his stint on the show. “Mujhe life mein itna appreciation, pyaar aur support kabhi nahi mila. This is the first time. I wasn’t expecting this, but I am very thankful,” he signs off.

So what if I'm 40? I have a heart-Sonali Phogat

Hissar politico Sonali Phogat exits the Bigg Boss house to realise she can swing merrily between netagiri and Bollywood, because both take guts, performance and some good luck
Aastha Atray Banan (MID-DAY; January 31, 2021)

Rajkumar Jangra, a BJP party worker in Hissar district of Haryana, is unsure about how Sonali Phogat, who has just exited the Bigg Boss house, will be received when she gets back to active political work. "It's her good luck that she reached where she did, and we, as party workers, are only happy for her. But everyone has their own point of view."

Ask him if he is referring to the conservative nature of politics in Haryana, and he agrees. "Dehaat mein [rural India] people are conservative. So, of course, the masses may have a problem. But we can deal with it. Madam has always been a person who takes people along as she moves ahead. She gets along well with everyone, and gets the work done. She finds solutions," he says of Phogat, who held the position of National Vice President of BJP's Mahila Morcha.

Phogat agrees with Jangra. She think it's what saw her through the last 33 days on what's considered one of India's toughest reality show challenges. Phogat was eliminated last weekend from the hit show's 14th season, and while we had expected her to be back in Hissar, Phogat intends to hang on in Mumbai and explore work opportunities. Last Wednesday in fact, she was at a post-show press conference posing for photographers in a red pant suit, eager to talk. It's not the garb you expect a conventional politico to be in. But then, Phogat doesn't seem to play by the rules.

She didn't inside the house either, when she confessed to on-off friend Arshi Khan that she had the hots for fellow paticipant, television actor Aly Goni. "Just because I am in politics, will I be targeted for my feelings? I've also always liked Dharam ji [Dharmendra] and had told my husband to organise a meeting with him. When I used to talk to him for hours, my husband got jealous. I feel that about Salman Khan as well. I like them. Aly is a nice guy," she says, adding after a pause, "I want to tell all the kids who are trolling me that they will be 40 one day. Will they not have feelings then?"

Phogat's straight talk has been discussed even before she decided to try her hand at reality television. Born into a farmer family in Haryana, she was married right after Class X, and lost her husband early. She became an actor on the small screen with Ek Maa Jo Laakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma and made a big-screen debut with Chhoriyan Chhoron Se Kam Nahi Hoti. Phogat has also been an active performer on popular video app, TikTok. But it was in 2019 that she made headlines when she received a BJP ticket to contest the state elections from the Adampur constituency. In 2020, she was caught on camera assaulting Sultan Singh, the market committee secretary in Haryana, whom she claimed had made a derogatory pass at her.

In the house, the aggression was on display on few rare occasions, including a bizarrely quirky moment when she decided on a whim to pour water over Arshi Khan for shooting her mouth without a thought. Also, her fights with actress Niki Tamboli have been acidic, and her verbal repartee with Rubina Dilaik has ended with Phogat using the choicest expletives in Hindi.

In the early days of her joining, Phogat didn't manage too much screen time, with the likes or Tamboli branding her a nobody. After a few wise words from superstar Salman Khan, who headlines the show, she seemed to step up her game by speaking up, picking a fight if needed, and admitting that she had a soft corner for Goni. "In politics," she says, "we have to abide by certain beliefs and toe the line. Here, [on the show] it was the opposite. You can move ahead by cheating people, which you shouldn't do in politics. On the show, things just happen to you; you react in a way you didn't know you would. So, I learnt a lot about myself this last month. When I get angry, I break the rules. And it did happen a couple of times on the show too, but I was being myself. I don't fake it. I am sure that will take me far in politics." Politics, which Phogat says took up most of her time until now, may have to wait a bit. While her team is carrying on with work in Hissar, Phogat is in the mood to act some more.

Jangra says they will be happy when she returns as it's always good when a party worker shines elsewhere too. The messages from female party workers that came to her once she was out is proof that she was entertaining enough for them to have watched the show with their children. "My daughter said, 'I didn't think you would even last one week'," Phogat says of her 14 year-old.

Politics and Bollywood make happy bedfellows, she knows, making her plan to divide her time between her interests a feasible one. "I lasted 33 days in the house, so people must have liked me. I think they saw that I tried to take people along, and help them bond. That matters in politics. But I was discriminated against. Niki said, 'Who is she?' Well, I must be someone and that's why I was called on the show. My aim now is to make sure no one gets discriminated. Neither in Haryana, nor in the country."

Evicted from Bigg Boss 14, Jasmin Bhasin on her ‘nose job’ fight with Sawant and partner Aly’s chances of winning show
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; January 12, 2021)

Ousted after merely 100 days, Bigg Boss 14 contestant Jasmin Bhasin says she has no regrets — instead, the Dil Se Dil Tak actor is looking forward to eating her favourite food and pampering herself at the salon now that her confinement is over. While her eccentric behaviour and romance with Aly Goni kept the viewers entertained, she also received flak for crying at the drop of a hat and being a drama queen. In a chat with mid-day, Bhasin addresses it all, one controversy at a time.

Edited excerpts from the interview:

Did you expect your eviction?
Honestly, I thought I would make it to the finals, but the show is unexpected and one doesn’t know when his/her journey may end. Having said that, I am not upset because I wanted Aly to stay in the race.

Where do you stand on your equation with Rubina Dilaik?
Rubina and I are not friends, but I have no hatred towards her. I will be cordial if I ever meet her again.

Has your relationship with Eijaz Khan improved?
In the last two weeks, Eijaz has been calm, quiet and less aggressive. I have seen a different Eijaz every week [laughs]. So, I still don’t know him well enough.

Your parents do not seem to approve of Aly. Does that impact your relationship with him?
Their comment [when they visited the house] has been taken out of context. My parents met him once, much before the show came our way, and loved him. They believed that I should play a solo game in the house and not depend on anyone. [Their observation stems from] the episode where I was ousted from the captaincy task because he was trying to help me, and in the process, we broke a few rules. My parents would be thrilled to see us together forever.

Rashami Desai accused Aly of bullying Vikas Gupta. Do you concur?
It is wrong of Rashami to use the word ‘bullying’. Aly is not capable of doing something like that. After they had an argument, Aly profusely apologised to Vikas, who responded rudely. I know Rashami is not fond of me. Had she [made the bullying remark] in front of me, I wouldn’t be kind with my words.

Do you think you crossed the line when you brought up Rakhi Sawant’s rhinoplasty?
I did not start that conversation. It was purely a reaction to Rakhi’s comments about my face, my body and the way I look. She said unwarranted things about me, and I reacted. I would never bring up someone’s cosmetic surgeries because in the future, I may opt for them. I believe there is nothing wrong with surgically enhancing your looks if it makes you happy.

Apart from Aly, who do you think may bag the trophy this year?
Rubina can take the trophy home because she is a clever and manipulative woman.

I don’t mind getting married to Aly Goni this year-Jasmin Bhasin

Unnati Joshi (BOMBAY TIMES; January 11, 2021)

After staying in the Bigg Boss house for 100 days, Jasmin Bhasin was evicted from the show. But the Dil Se Dil Tak actress says she is happy as her BFF turned BF, Aly Goni is still in the house. “I was sad about my eviction, it was shocking. But I was very happy for Aly. I wanted him to stay. He left the show once for me, I didn’t want him to go again. I will definitely miss him, main roz subah uth ke sabse pehle usko dekhti thi, I will miss that now,” she tells us.

After leaving the show, Jasmin decided to not go to her house, and instead, visited her friends Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa. “After leaving from the Bigg Boss house, I was thinking about a lot of things, including my fans’ reaction towards my game. I didn’t know what people outside were thinking about me. So, I was a little low and decided to go to Bharti and Haarsh’s house first. They are my support system. And I felt lighter after meeting them, phir maine chhole bhature bhi khaaye aur mutton biryani bhi,” she says laughing.

‘I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH ALY GONI’
When Jasmin’s parents visited her in the house during the family week recently, they pointed out that her love story perhaps is taking precedence over her gameplay. They even asked her to play solo. And it didn’t go down very well with Aly. “My parents were misunderstood. They asked me to focus on my game, jo bhi kaha unhone woh game ke liye kaha. Why will my parents have any problem with our relationship? I have had a discussion with them and they are very happy,” she says, adding, “I have fallen in love and it’s a beautiful feeling. I don’t mind getting married this year; my parents are okay with it. Once Aly comes out, they will meet his parents. We need to know what his parents have to say about it. I have met them a few times, but pehle hum sirf dost thay. Once they approve our relationship, phir main wait nahi karungi, I will get married. I know Aly is the one for me.”

‘IT’S NOT EASY TO LIVE WITH RAKHI SAWANT’
Jasmin and Rakhi Sawant’s recent altercation has grabbed a lot of eyeballs, though not for the right reasons. Mention that to her and she says, “I still believe that I didn’t hurt her, she banged her head multiple times on the table and injured herself. If it was because of me, I am really sorry about it. I didn’t want to hurt her intentionally. Maine unse maafi bhi maangi hai. To be honest, it’s not easy to live with her. She is entertaining when you see her one-minute videos on social media or watch her for an hour in a show. Living with her 24X7 is not easy. She is very irritating, har baat par drama karti hain woh. I didn’t like her personality and main unke game ki ninda karti hoon. I was always nice with her, unhone mera dil dukhaya hai by saying things about my character. But it’s done and dusted. Now, if I meet her, I will be nice to her.”

‘I CAN’T BE FRIENDS WITH RUBINA’
Talking about her on-and-off friendship with co-contestant Rubina Dilaik, Jasmin says, “Rubina and I had a very beautiful bond initially, but it got ruined during the show. She always spoke behind my back, while I said everything to her face. She was very mean to me. I don’t think we can ever be friends, but I don’t have any grudges against her. I think we can chill together if we meet socially.” Despite that, she feels Rubina can win the show. “She can win because of her cleverness and manipulation skills. I also see Aly as a winner because he has a clean heart and is playing well. He is equally strong,” she signs off.

Eijaz Khan doesn’t want friends but chamchas in his life-Kavita Kaushik

Neha Chaudhary (BOMBAY TIMES; November 7, 2020)

Kavita Kaushik’s eviction from the Bigg Boss house surprised many, considering she was touted as one of the strong contenders on the show. However, the actress says that the reason behind her eviction was that she got pulled into somebody’s else’s game. She says, “I played with my heart and not mind. When I entered the show, Eijaz Khan claimed to be a close friend of mine. He is just an acquaintance. I have met him three or four times in 18 years of my career. In 2005, we did a show together and after that I met him straightaway in 2019! All our meetings didn’t make him my close friend. It’s only in Bigg Boss that I got to know about his true nature.”

Kavita faced a lot of backlash when she mentioned in the show that she cooked for Eijaz during the lockdown and people said that the actress made it sound like a favour. She clarified, “In March, when the lockdown was announced, I called up all those whom I know who were single. So, I called Eijaz also to check on him and how he is managing everything alone. He told me that there is no cook and it’s getting difficult for him to cook food daily. Out of concern, I cooked something for him, which he can stock in his refrigerator for few days. I didn’t do him any favour, unlike the reports. And I wasn’t making a mockery of him. It was a gesture from my side. You see, it’s a 24-hour show and they show only 45 minutes of the entire day. So, my words were taken out of context.”

As far as posting a picture with Eijaz is concerned on her social media account, she said, “I have a picture with Shah Rukh Khan also, does that make him my friend? Inside the show, I got to know the real Eijaz and realised that he doesn’t want friends but chamchas in his life. And I don’t want to be his chamcha. When he mentioned to Salman Khan that I am his close friend, I could have cleared that thing right there, but out of respect for Eijaz, I didn’t disregard him and refute his claims, something which I should have. In fact, this went against me and Rubina Dilaik nominated me. And what close friend is he blabbering about? Inside the house, I invited him to sit with me while I was having food, but he simply ignored that. He doesn’t need love or friends; I told this to Pavitra Punia. But that time, she didn’t listen to me. And look at the situation now. I saw in the promos that instead of saving her, Eijaz saved Jasmin Bhasin, leaving Pavitra in tears.”

Kavita said that she has learnt a huge lesson during her stint in Bigg Boss. “The biggest lesson that I have learnt is that you have to stand up for yourself and you have to be conscious of who your friends are and who aren’t.”

When asked if she would like to go in as a wildcard contestant, Kavita said, “As of now, I am planning a trip to the hills. So, I really can’t say anything right now.”

Payment woes: Will TV industry alter 90-day credit system?

Radhika Bhirani (HINDUSTAN TIMES; May 31, 2020)

A lot of behind-the-scenes changes in the Indian TV industry are in store, owing to the Coronavirus crisis. But will there be a reduction in the current 90-day credit period of payments in the interest of the fraternity?

Two suicide cases and the ensuing revelations around the financial stress faced by TV artistes led the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to urge producers to “ensure that all payments due to such persons up to March 2020 are cleared at the earliest”. This also comes after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) proposed that outstanding dues should be cleared by producers before shooting commences, and should be made within 30 days of the shoot, whenever they resume.

TV artistes and technicians have for long been vocal about the downside of being paid 90 days after the first telecast of a show. Actor Arjun Bijlani reveals, “A lot of times once shows are over, some of the producers don’t pay actors and technicians or harass them for the last two cheques. One has to keep following up even though it’s our hard-earned money. If things have to change, they have to change from the top.”

It is a circle, agrees actor-producer J D Majethia. “Every person will have to understand that if they want their business to work, they will have to put in some money in the economy themselves,” he adds. And as for defaulters, Majethia, who is also the chairman of the TV wing of the Indian Film and TV Producers Council, says, “Those facing such (payment) issues can write to the Cine And TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) which can forward the grievances to us. We can take it up with concerned producers so that they clear the payments.”

Actor Rubina Dilaik feels it is necessary for actors to have some form of security amid uncertainty. “Around 80% of those working in showbiz are from different parts of India. They don’t have a regular source of income to survive in times of such cut-throat competition,” she adds.

However, actor Aishwarya Sakhuja believes producers are becoming a bit more flexible, adding, “If you have a contract and you want to put a clause (for earlier payments), producers are ready to listen.”
