No guarantors, Ready writer Ikram Akhtar stuck in UP jail despite being granted bail

THE TIMES OF INDIA (December 6, 2023)
Bareilly: Renowned Bollywood director and screenwriter Ikram Akhtar, known for his work alongside superstars like Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan, has been incarcerated in Moradabad jail for more than two months in a cheque bounce case. Akhtar was arrested by the UP police in Mumbai on September 19, following his evasion of arrest since December 2022 when a warrant was issued against him.
A resident of Mumbai, Akhtar has been unable to find guarantors despite being granted bail by the court, which ordered him to provide two sureties of Rs 10 lakh each before he is released. Akhtar has screenwriting credits for blockbusters like Salman Khan starrer ‘Ready’, Ajay Devgn’s ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’ among many others. His legal woes trace back to his involvement in the film ‘I Love Dubai’, produced by Moradabad-based real estate baron Kuldeep Katyal.
During the making, disputes cropped up between the two, with Akhtar abandoning the project midway. Katyal then filed a complaint against him in 2016.
Akhtar then alleged the film’s completion was stalled due to a dispute between Katyal and the lead actress. This culminated in Akhtar’s arrest and incarceration in 2017.
I did bold scenes on screen, but I wasn’t selling my body-Zareen Khan

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 26, 2023)
Zareen Khan, during a recent Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, spoke about doing the erotic thriller Hate Story 3 (2015), which was one of her biggest hits. She said she did it only because she needed the money.
The 36-year-old, who didn’t have a “filmy father” in the industry, tells us, “I would’ve been okay if I came from generational wealth, but I had to fend for myself and take care of my family. Thank God, I got the song Character Dheela in Ready (2011) and later a role in Housefull 2 (2012), which got me bits here and there. But [those movies] still didn’t do for me what Hate Story 3 did [in terms of] success and appreciation. I did bold scenes [onscreen], but at least I wasn’t doing something off-screen or selling my body. I wouldn’t have had a peaceful sleep at night if I did that.”
Coming from an “orthodox Muslim background”, Khan did have a lot of reservations about going ahead with Hate Story 3. “I had many thoughts and questions, but at the end of the day, I had to fend for my family. But the kind of things (bold scenes) we are now seeing on screen, what I did in the film was nothing [in comparison]! I got a lot of appreciation for my role, but many people in the industry said, ‘She doesn’t know how to act, so she’s shedding her clothes’,” says Khan, adding, “To all those bigwigs and makers, I want to say, ‘Today, you are making actors and actresses do much more than what I did at that time’. I am very confused how this industry works.”
If I didn’t make a film with Salman Khan, my career would have remained incomplete-Farhad Samji

Stating that his career would have been ‘incomplete’ without working with Salman, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan director Farhad Samji was impressed by the superstar’s command over filmmaking
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 6, 2023)
When Farhad Samji started out as a lyricist in the industry 20 years ago, he didn’t have a godfather. If over the years, anyone has come close to playing the role for him, it would be Salman Khan. “After I became a script writer, I wrote Ready [2011] for him. So, our collaboration was bound to happen. If I didn’t make a film with Salman sir, my career would have remained incomplete,” begins Samji, who realised his wish with the upcoming offering, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan.
The director, who previously helmed Housefull 4 (2019) and Bachchhan Paandey (2022), feels Khan and he are a natural fit. Tracing the film’s genesis, he says, “Both of us are into mainstream films. He is the king of commercial movies. We bounced this idea of north-meeting-south, and began developing the script at his Panvel farmhouse a few years ago.”
With the Eid release — also starring south star Venkatesh, Pooja Hegde, Shehnaaz Gill, Raghav Juyal and Bhumika Chawla, among others — the director has the pressure of appealing to Khan’s legion of fans. That aside, working with a superstar can be daunting in itself, especially when the actor is known for his larger-than-life persona. Mention this to Samji, and he laughs it off.
“When you tell Salman, ‘Sir, you have to do this,’ you get scared because he has an [intimidating] personality. But being a creative person, I tell him this is the need of his character, and he understands that. He knows that he has to bring in certain [traits] to his role.”
Collaborating with Khan has been everything the director hoped for. In fact, he says he was pleasantly surprised on seeing the superstar’s dedication and knowledge first-hand. “Being a superstar, he knows his job well. But Salman sir holds expertise over almost every branch of filmmaking — right from costumes to music, from locations to framing and VFX. Such rich experience comes after doing 1,000 films. In my sittings with him, I’d notice how he seemed to know everything. That was a revelation.”
Recreating Character Dheela could have created a backlash. So, we decided to celebrate the song-Bosco Martis

Shehzada production designer reveals how Aaryan decided to recreate Character dheela, and put together a team to shoot it at the last minute
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; February 15, 2023)
Earlier this month, mid-day had reported that Kartik Aaryan was shooting a last-minute song for Shehzada, which was one of the reasons the film’s release was deferred (Taking a chance on dance, Feb 2). It appears that the team didn’t look too far for inspiration. The makers of the Aaryan and Kriti Sanon-starrer recently released Character Dheela 2.0, a recreation of Salman Khan’s hit number from Ready (2011).
Production designer Rajat Poddarr reveals that Aaryan — who is also one of Shehzada’s producers — suggested incorporating a promotional song to amp up the buzz around Rohit Dhawan’s directorial venture.
“Kartik wanted to [reimagine] this number from Ready, in his own way. Initially, the team felt that the situation didn’t require a song, but he insisted it would enhance the movie’s promotions. He contacted Bosco [Martis] for the choreography, and me for the sets. He suggested to the producers that this would be his team, as we had done the title track of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 together,” shares Poddarr.
With the team in place, it was time for execution. The leading man prepped for two days with choreographer Martis, before the dance number was shot over three days in the last week of January at a Madh Island bungalow. Building the set in such a short time was no mean feat.
“We were constructing one part of the set, while Kartik would be shooting in the other part. We built different sets, including a swimming pool, ramp, and a colourful scooter. We submerged the ramp in water so that Kartik could do his slide step. He had referenced videos with Bosco, Manu [Anand, director of photography] and me [to determine the song’s treatment].”
Character dheela had become a rage when it was released. Aaryan knew that stepping into Khan’s dancing shoes was a huge responsibility. So, instead of recreating the track, step for step, he did the next best thing. Martis says, “Recreating Salman bhai’s song could have created a backlash. So, we decided to celebrate the song. We wanted to make it peppier and relevant.”
Defining a woman’s beauty has never been a problem all these years-Devi Sri Prasad

Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 18, 2022)
The soundtrack of Allu Arjun-starrer Pushpa: The Rise - Part 01 (2021) has received a lot of attention, Oo Antava being one of the popular songs in the film. While the track, featuring actor Samantha, has emerged as a chartbuster across five languages, some slammed the dance number as sleazy and misogynistic.
Commenting on the subject, the film’s music composer Devi Sri Prasad, popularly known as DSP, says, “With Oo Antava, we aren’t demeaning anyone. We’re simply describing certain men. Defining a woman’s body and beauty has never been a problem all these years. Some of the biggest music directors have composed such songs.”
He adds that the song has received the most appreciation from women, and that it’s more of “a social message song, rather than an item number”.
Known for dance numbers, DSP asserts that he has always steered clear from lyrics with innuendos: “I’m very careful with the lyrics in all my dance songs. In fact, most of them are sung by kids, like Dhinka Chika (Ready; 2011). I always tell my directors and lyricists that there shouldn’t be anything derogatory... But sometimes, the hidden grammar is unavoidable.”
In fact, he states that a song makes the cut for him only once he makes his family listen to it at the dining table. “When I read the lyrics, I ask [myself] if I would be able to play it in front of my mother and sister. I have often argued in situations where a song was likely to make women feel uncomfortable. When you’re brought up in a household with strong women around you, the way you look at women, in general, is different,” he says, adding that Pushpa’s director Sukumar and lyricist Chandrabose also “respect women a lot”.
There are 10 actresses in No Entry sequel and to get such an ensemble in place is a challenge-Anees Bazmee

Writer-director Anees Bazmee has put the lockdown to good use; has been editing his horror comedy too
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 29, 2020)
After the shoot of his horror comedy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, featuring Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani and Tabu, was halted midway in Lucknow in March, Anees Bazmee took off with his family to his Lonavala farm house. It’s been six months since the filmmaker has isolated himself there. “Initially, no one thought that the Coronavirus lockdown would extend for so long. I took a break from work and spent some time with my family. But now, I have resumed work and after a long time, I have written a pure love story on the lines of Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha. The screenplay, with the dialogue, is locked,” he reveals with much satisfaction.Through the lockdown, Anees was also in touch with his Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 team. “We edited the chunk we have shot so far, in Jaipur and Lucknow,” he shares, adding that he is in no hurry to resume shooting for the Bhushan Kumar and Murad Khetani production. “It’s essential to follow social distancing till the vaccine arrives. Executing the SOPs on the set will be difficult and expensive. But those who want to shoot should follow them for everyone’s safety.”
Prod him on his shooting plans and he says, “We had to pack up in Lucknow because of Covid-19 and for continuity purposes, we can’t resume filming in Mumbai. Whenever we decide on a date, we will fly to Lucknow again and that’s a big call to take as we had a crew of 300-400 back then. We have to figure a way to cut down on the unit now and that’s going to be difficult. Over 50 per cent of our shoot remains.”
Buzz is, Tabu’s character will be multi-dimensional like Vidya Balan’s in the first film of the franchise. Anees doesn’t get into the details, “It’s a very important character and only an actress like Tabu could have done it as she has grasped the character graph perfectly. The trio of Kartik, Kiara and Tabu has brought a lot of freshness to the script.”
On Wednesday, No Entry, which is among Anees’ most loved films, completed 15 years. Every year, there’s talk of a sequel. The writer-director reveals that the script of No Entry Mein Entry is ready. “This time, Salman, Anil and Fardeen have double roles, every character has a wife and also a girlfriend. There are 10 actresses in the film and to get such an ensemble in place is a challenge, which is why the film is taking so long,” he shares, promising that it will take confusion to another level and assuring that the film will happen. “Every film has its own destiny and this being a cult film, we are all aware of the responsibility of spinning a sequel.”
Revisiting the time he first narrated the script to producer Boney Kapoor in the presence of late actress, Sridevi, Anees says, “Sridevi ji was a huge fan of No Entry, so is Janhvi (Kapoor). She wanted to hear the narration and even congratulated me at the end of it,” he beams.
The filmmaker is also committed to doing a film for Ekta Kapoor. Buzz is it’s with Vicky Kaushal after he was snapped with Anees outside Ekta’s office. “Ekta ji is a friend and yes, finally, we are teaming up. We have been working on a script, but I need to complete Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 first,” he sighs, adding he’s also hunting for the right script to take the 2011 family entertainer, Ready, forward. “Salman bhai is also really keen, whenever we meet, he says, ‘Yaar, Ready ka kuchh banana hai’. But none of us have been able to crack a script for the sequel yet.”
Meanwhile, Mahesh Babu’s 2011 actioner, Dookudu is gearing up for a Hindi remake. The Hindi version is currently being scripted and we hear the producers are keen to have Anees on board as the director. “Yes, I am in talks for Dookudu, but it’s too early to talk about that now,” he concludes.

It's wrong to say that I’ve got all my films because of Salman-Zareen Khan

Shreya Mukherjee (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 24, 2020)
Over the last five months, there has been a general air of tension and worry around us due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Add to that, the anxiety of many people losing jobs. And actor Zareen Khan feels that this work-related stress is affecting everyone’s mental health.
The actor is worried about her work, too. “Thankfully, I’m with my family in such stressful times. But I’m also worried about my finances. I’ve to start working. My source of income is a place where nothing is certain. You never know when you’ll get work, more so if you are an outsider. Star kids get everything so easily. I feel bad that I’m not given the chance to show whether I’ve the potential or not,” says Khan.
Opening up about the difficulties she had faced during her initial years in Bollywood, Khan says her challenges aren’t over yet. “It has always been tough. When Veer (2010) didn’t do well, people blamed me. I was new and unpolished. I might have made mistakes but no one understood. I became the soft target. Getting work after that was difficult,” she says, adding that she’s thankful to Salman Khan for making her an actor.
“Salman changed my life. But people think he got me all my films till date. That’s wrong. He just helped with my debut, after that I was on my own. I can’t be a burden on him. In fact, when nothing was working out, he trusted me again with the song Character Dheela (Ready; 2011),” adds the 33-year-old.
Khan says all these things affected her mental state. Things were worse when people compared her to actor Katrina Kaif. “It was both frustrating and depressing, but I never gave up. It backfired because Katrina was active at that time and I was just starting. Somehow, people like such comparisons, Preity Zinta was compared with Amrita Singh, Ameesha Patel with Neelam, but in their cases Amrita ji was done with her career and Neelam had also taken a break,” concludes Khan.
Salman Khan had 16 films in the previous decade with only 1 film failing to cross the 1 crore footfall mark

Box Office India Trade Network
DABANGG 3 just about managed to get 1 crore footfalls despite the failure of the film. This means that Salman Khan had just one miss in the gone decade where only one of his films failed to hit the 1 crore footfall mark, that is, VEER. One crore footfalls is basically a real 100 crore nett value at the box office be it 1970 or 2020. Obviously today 1 crore footfalls means much more than 100 crore nett at the box office and in a few years it will give even more as ticket rates go higher.
One crore footfalls also means reaching a sizeable audience although some films need to reach a bigger audience due to the size of the films and most Salman Khan films come into this category. The one miss was VEER (2010) which was his first release of the decade and became before DABANGG (2010) which established his image of a mass action superstar across India and then films like BODYGUARD, READY and EK THA TIGER rubber stamped this image. VEER actually scored in Rajasthan and Bihar but Salman Khan was not the same star at the time of this release as he was a year or two later.
Basically just one film under 1 crore footfalls through the whole decade means most of his films got an audience irrelevant of content. If we compare, then Aamir Khan had one film which fell under 1 crore footfalls in the 2000-2009 decade but there were just nine releases and Manoj Kumar had one miss in the 1970-1979 decade but only ten films. Limited films had a hand in not missing the 1 crore mark for Aamir Khan and Manoj Kumar.
The Salman Khan films of the last decade are also finding big audiences on television in the Coronavirus lockdown period especially the two TIGER films. As far as OTT goes its being said that these B and C grade web series which have foundations based on sex and profanities rather than story and screenplay are the rage in the lockdown period but just the price paid for Salman Khan starrers which is around 100 crore is enough to tell what has a bigger audience. TIGER ZINDA HAI, RACE 3, BHARAT and DABANGG 3 have all fetched this price or nearabouts it.
The footfalls of Salman Khan starrer in the last decade are as follows. There were sixteen releases in total.
1. Veer (2010) - 73,47,000
2. Dabangg (2010) - 2,50,86,000
3. Ready (2011) - 1,84,52,000
4. Bodyguard (2011) - 2,21,48,000
5. Ek Tha Tiger (2012) - 2,47,39,000
6. Dabangg 2 (2012) - 2,05,28,000
7. Jai Ho (2014) - 1,43,98,000
8. Kick (2015) - 2,41,92,000
9. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) - 3,54,17,000
10. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) - 2,22,76,000
11. Sultan (2016) - 3,20,85,000
12. Tubelight (2017) - 1,15,74,000
13. Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) - 3,08,89,000
14. Race 3 (2018) - 1,58,19,000
15. Bharat (2019) - 1,60,68,000
16. Dabangg 3 (2019) - 1,01,63,000
We are in talks with Salman Khan and Anees Bazmee for Ready 2-Bhushan Kumar

Director Anees Bazmee returns with a sequel to the 2011 hit; says the film will go on the fl oors depending on the actor’s availability
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 23, 2018)
Salman Khan, who kicked off work on Ali Abbas Zafar’s Eid 2019 release Bharat on Sunday with co-star Disha Patani, is to start two new projects — Dabbang 3 with Prabhu Dheva and brother Sohail Khan’s Sher Khan — after wrapping it up. Now, Mirror has learnt that the actor has added another film to his already choc-o-bloc schedule. Producer Bhushan Kumar reveals that talks are on with the 52-year-old actor for a sequel to Anees Bazmee’s 2011 hit, Ready. While the original had Asin as Salman’s leading lady, an actress is yet to be finalised for the sequel.
Bhushan Kumar told Mirror, “Bharat, my production with Atul Agnihotri, has just started and now we are in talks with Salman bhai and Anees bhai for Ready 2. We are just waiting for the script to get ready so that we can take it forward.”
Bazmee added that he can’t wait to start work on the project. “Bhushan ji and I have been in talks for a few months now. He had also been interested in making Ready 2 for quite some time. Things are looking positive after our most recent meeting. I haven’t met Salman bhai to discuss dates and other details yet. Taking the film on the floors will depend on his availability.”
Ready, which had also featured Paresh Rawal, Mahesh Manjrekar, Puneet Issar and Arya Babbar, was a remake of the eponymous Telugu film that released in 2008 and was directed by Sreenu Vaitla. Ram Pothineni and Genelia Déshmukh played leads in the original that narrated the story of Prem, who is to get engaged to Pooja, but another girl, Sanjana, impersonates her to evade her money-hungry relatives.
Today, people either want to see meaningful cinema or a film like Baahubali-Bhushan Kumar

Lasyapriya Sundaram (BOMBAY TIMES; September 24, 2017)
Bhushan Kumar was only 19
when he was straddled with the responsibility of carrying forward his
father Gulshan Kumar's legacy. Today, apart from being a big player in
the music industry, his company, T-Series, is packing an interesting
mix of films, which include smaller content-driven movies and big-starrer
projects. In a chat with BT, Bhushan talks about his upcoming films and
how he wants to fulfill his dad's dream. Excerpts...
While you have produced out-and-out commercial films in the past, many of your releases this year are small-budget projects driven by content. Has there been a shift in the kind of movies that you want to back?
Our focus is to make content-driven films because that's what the audience seems to like. Pucca commercial projects haven't done well at the box office recently. This year, our film, Hindi Medium, became a huge success. That movie was a real test for us and we didn't expect it to open big at the ticket windows. We were of the opinion that if it doesn't work, then we are on the wrong path. But clearly, realistic narratives and films with strong and relatable stories are making a mark. Our recent film Raabta, which was based on the concept of reincarnation, didn't work. People couldn't relate to it. Baadshaho was a big-budget multi-starrer, but the backdrop of the film was based on a real incident. That helped pique people's curiosity. Two of my upcoming projects, Kedarnath and Raid, are also based on real events. While the former is a love story set during the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, the latter is a thriller about a real-life income tax raid.
There was a time when it was believed that people went to the theatres to indulge in fantasies and leave behind their daily struggles. Now, the tide has turned, and people want to see more realistic cinema even while getting entertained...
Today, people either want to see meaningful cinema or are demanding a film like Baahubali. With the latter, the audience knows that willing suspension of disbelief is a prerequisite. In such a film, the protagonist fighting a thousand adversaries alone and emerging victorious without a scratch is palatable because of the superb quality of production and visuals. On the other hand, mere star-driven films fail to earn box-office revenue.
There are also more takers for films driven by women today? Is that the reason that many of your recent and upcoming films - Simran, Bhoomi and Tumhari Sullu - have women-oriented narratives?
With women empowerment becoming a talking point, the number of films with women as protagonists has been on the rise. While some women-centric films are impactful, some are not. I recently saw the rushes of our film Tumhari Sulu, starring Vidya Balan, and realised how relevant it is to our times. Bhoomi is a father-daughter story which also highlights a current issue.
It is to be noted that an important aspect of making a content-driven film is to keep the budget tight...
I am a passionate filmmaker, but at the same time, I also ensure that my films are budgeted smartly. I don't believe in pumping in any amount just to fulfill my passion. Producers who don't keep a check on their budget end up losing money. We put in our own money, we don't borrow from anyone. I earn from my music business and use it to produce films. Actors now insist that a movie's budget shouldn't be on the higher end of the spectrum, and often reduce their remuneration to help make the film a profitable venture.
You have been part of the music business and film industry. As a businessman, which one do you find tougher to handle?
I have been in the music business for close to 18 years. Now, filmmakers consult me before they zero in on the songs for their films. So, as far as music is concerned, I know the game. However, I haven't nailed it as far as ascertaining what makes for good content in movies. In fact, I have green lit films that I was not sure about and admitted ki mujhe nahi maloom ki yeh chalegi ya nahi. I did that because I wanted to take a chance and learn. The turning point for our production house was the Salman-starrer Ready, which turned out to be a huge hit. That's when we decided to get into full-fledged production. At that time, franchises like Raaz and Murder were in vogue and so, I thought of making Aashiqui 2. Aashiqui was my father's first film, and I was anyway keen on taking it forward. It was my father's dream to make films after music, and I wanted to carry his legacy forward. Talking about my father, Mogul is a very special film for us, as it's his biopic. Akshay will essay the lead role; I didn't even narrate the script (penned by Subhash Kapoor) to him. I simply told him that we wanted to make the film. While my father is my idol and inspiration, my mother has been my biggest support. Twenty years back, when I took over the business, it was her encouragement and belief that helped me. She would keep telling me that my father would guide me and help me take the business forward even though he was no more.
I want to do a comedy next-Salman Khan

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; December 13, 2016)
In the last two years. Salman Khan’s choices as an actor have evolved. He isn’t just picking mindless commercial Hindi films but he’s carefully choosing content-driven films which are more like mainstream cinema today.
Salman’s done a humane drama like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and followed it up with a family drama like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and an action entertainer like Sultan. He’s currently shooting for Kabir Khan’s Tubelight, which is a period action romance set in the 1960s and has the slick action thriller Tiger Zinda Hai lined up after that.
But what does he want to do next? Salman has the answer. “I want to do a comedy next. I love the genre and although it looks easy, it’s the most difficult genre of films. It’s not an easy task to make the audiences laugh. You know it’s very easy to love a heroine, do some romantic dances here and there or beat up 50 people and the crowd will cheer. But comedy is difficult.”
His last comedy film was Ready that released in 2011. And he says he has been on the lookout for a comedy film ever since. Salman reveals, “Yes, I’m trying to find something, but I am not getting a film like that. Once I get a film, which makes me laugh when I’m hearing it, then I will do it for sure. Ready was a film that actually made me laugh during the narration. After that, I have not heard a script like that.”
Housefull 3 breaks the record of Ready & Namak Halaal

MUMBAI MIRROR (June 7, 2016)
This franchise film has already made history with the weekend numbers and now with the way it is going, looks like they will surpass all records ever made in any comedy film. Exhibitors reveal that the film is consistently doing extraordinarily brilliant at the cash counter! Before Housefull 3, films like Amitabh Bachchan's Namak Halaal, released in a time when data and numbers were not recorded and Salman Khan's Ready are the two films that did extremely well. Ready, which was till now the holder of the biggest comedy film ever will be passed on to Housefull 3.
A source close to the industry adds, “Collections are the most objective way in which one can assess the success of a film. And box-office collections prove beyond doubt that HF 3 is the biggest comedy so far. That it will surpass the first two in the franchise viz. Housefull and Housefull 2 is now a given after the huge weekend but it may also mean that it will surpass the total collections of Ready, another hit comedy. Namak Halaal is another successful comedy which comes to mind. Housefull 3 may well become the new comedy benchmark from now on.“
Pick up, this is Salman Khan-Mudassar Khan on the message that followed 6 missed calls

Choreographer Mudassar Khan on the message that followed six missed calls that changed his career
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; December 27, 2015)
Mudassar Khan, an upcoming choreographer, was given a
break by Salman Khan when the superstar saw him dancing at a mall. He
had participated in a dance competition and the winner got the
opportunity to perform in front of the actor.
AISE HI BOLA HOGA?
Says Mudassar, “It was before the release of Wanted. After I performed, Salman Khan hugged me and told me to get in touch with him. I was ecstatic, but later realised that he hadn’t taken my number! And of course, I didn’t have his. I thought he must have just said it, the way stars usually do and left it at that.”
HAAN , BOL!
A month and a half later, when Mudassar’s mother was talking on his phone, he got six missed calls from Salman. “I didn’t know it was him, but I called on the number. When he said it’s Salman Khan, I thought it was somebody from my family and casually said, ‘Haan bol’. It was with his next sentence, ‘Main kab se phone kar raha hoon, tu utha nahi raha hai,’ that I recognised it was him! I immediately apologised and he asked me to come to his house. It was after that I saw the message he had sent, ‘Pick up, this is Salman Khan’.
AFTER AN INTEZAAR
However, when Mudassar went with his team, the watchman threw him out. He tried calling the actor, but didn’t get any response. Finally, after waiting for over an hour, he decided to leave thinking somebody had played a prank on him. “That’s when I got a call from Salman and he asked to me come inside. When he opened the door, I couldn’t believe it, I was too excited. Initially, I danced to some English songs and later to Hindi dance numbers. He gave me my first break at a small award function and then the song Humka Peeni from Dabangg, Dhinka Chika and Character Dheela from Ready followed.” And, his life changed completely.
PUBLIC KI PASAND, PLEASE!
Mudassar rates Salman as a very good dancer. “He has a good sense of music as well as choreography. There have been times when he has taught me. With us choreographers our main aim is: dance faadu hona chahiye but Salman feels public ko pasand hona chahiye. When I give him what I think are cool steps, he says to put that in the antara (paragraph) and give an easy signature step for the mukhda (opening) which anybody from the age of five to 60 can do easily.”
READY TO GO!
Ask him how he came up with the Dhinka Chika step and he recounts, “We were in Thailand and it was extremely chilly. When I went to Salman in the morning to discuss the steps, he said he didn’t want to take his hands out of the pockets because it was cold. He told me to give him a step accordingly. I thought he was joking, but later realised he was serious. That’s when I went to my assistant and designed that step, which became so popular,” smiles Mudassar who also choreographed Salman’s latest hit Prem Leela from Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

The arbitration order may
have gone in favour of Anees Bazmee (Mirror, Nov 11) but
Ready producer Bhushan Kumar is not ready to pay up yet. He has in
fact moved the High Court against the director.
His lawyer, Hiren Mehta told Mirror, “Bazmee was to be paid Rs 8.61 crore but the project did not take off on time and on March 30, 2010, two agreements were signed whereby his remuneration was scaled down to Rs 5.50 crore, with profits to be shared by the two. Now, Bazmee wants Rs 11 crore, inclusive of profits. This would leave Bhushan with only Rs 9 crore. The gross collection of the film was Rs 120 crore. Why would Bhushan invest Rs 55 crore in a film which would fetch him less than the director?“

Anees Bazmee is a relieved man. He had slapped a case of non-payment of dues against Bhushan Kumar, the producer of his 2011 directorial Ready, in September. The arbitration proceedings have gone in his favour and Bhushan will have to pay Rs 9 crore to Anees.
The relationship between the director and the producer went sour after the film's release when Bhushan failed to pay Anees his directorial fee, plus a percentage of the profit. Talking to Mirror (September 11, 2014), Bhushan had explained: "The film has earned Rs 120 crore. The deal was that we would pay Bazmee 30 percent of the profit after we recover all our money. We had to re-shoot two songs, which cost us an extra Rs 2 crore. Added to that, we spent Rs 20 crore in publicity." He insisted he had also paid Anees a signing amount of Rs 5 crore four years back. Now, he plans to move High Court.
Advocate M L Ranjit representing Anees, said: "Let Bhushan appeal. He has every right to do that. But my client is not a liar."
Bhushan retorted, "We have a court hearing later this month. We will present our set of arguments in detail then."
Anees was diplomatic: "Bhushan and I are cordial to each other. Whatever I have asked from him is my rightful money."
