Javed Akhtar challenges summons order in Kangana Ranaut case

Rebecca Samervel (THE TIMES OF INDIA; August 3, 2023)

Mumbai: Submitting that the magistrate jumped to conclusions in a hasty and inappropriate manner which has resulted in grave miscarriage of justice, veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar moved the sessions court against a lower court order summoning him for charges relating to criminal intimidation and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman following a complaint by Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut in 2021.

The plea submitted by advocates Jay Bharadwaj and Harsh Ramchandani before the Dindoshi sessions court on Monday also said the magistrate failed to appreciate that the complaint was hopelessly time barred as the maximum time for filing it for an offence punishable up to three years imprisonment, is three years from the date of the alleged incident. It said while the alleged incident is from March 2016, Ranaut had filed the complaint before the magistrate’s court about five years later in 2021. The court is likely to hear the plea on August 8.

In an order pronounced on July 24, a magistrate’s court had directed Akhtar to appear before it on August 5. The court had dropped charges relating to extortion. In her 2021 complaint, through her advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, Ranaut had submitted that in a public dispute with her costar, Hrithik Roshan, Akhtar had called her sister and her to his house in Juhu and threatened her and forced her to tender a written apology.

In his plea against the order issuing summons, Akhtar said the magistrate had relied on Ranaut’s contradictory statements and on the version provided by her sister, an interested witness, Rangoli Chandel. “…Magistrate failed to appreciate that it is rather a matter of common sense and logical presumption that… Rangoli Chandel being the real sister of Respondent No 2 (Ranaut) is bound to support Kangana Ranaut and her verification statement cannot be believed by any stretch of imagination,” Akhtar’s plea said. The plea further said she did not produce any independent witness who could have corroborated her story.

Akhtar too had filed a defamation complaint against Ranaut in November 2020 before Andheri magistrate’s court. Referring to this, Akhtar said Ranaut’s 2021 complaint was filed only as a counter-blast to harass him. His plea said this was also evident from the fact that Ranaut never pursued her own complaint and appeared for the first time before the court only in July 2022.

“The Respondent No 2 while on one hand claiming that the matter is of grave urgency, took 12 adjournments before finally recording her verification statement…,” Akhtar’s plea said.

Extortion charge dropped in Kangana Ranaut case against Javed Akhtar

Rebecca Samervel (THE TIMES OF INDIA; July 27, 2023)

Mumbai: In a detailed order summoning veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar for charges relating to criminal intimidation and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman following a complaint by Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, the magistrate’s court has dropped charges relating to extortion.

The magistrate said that no case is made out against the accused for extortion-related offences as asking a person to give a written apology will not come under the definition of ‘valuable security.’ The extortion charge is defined as “whoever intentionally puts any person in fear of any injury and dishonestly induced in fear to deliver any property or valuable security.”

“Thus, written apology cannot be termed as valuable security,” metropolitan magistrate R M Shaikh said. Akhtar will have to appear before the court on August 5.

While the order was pronounced on Monday, the detailed order copy was made available on Wednesday.

The magistrate, however, said that on the basis of averments in the complaint, verification of the complainant Ranaut and statement of her sister Rangoli Chandel, there were sufficient grounds to proceed against Akhtar for the other two charges.

Through her advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, Ranaut had accused Akhtar of extortion and criminal intimidation, among other charges. She claimed that in a public dispute with her co-star, Hrithik Roshan, Akhtar called her sister and her to his house in Juhu and threatened her and forced her to tender a written apology. She said the public dispute between Roshan and her was of no consequence to Akhtar.

“However, the accused with malafide intention and ulterior motive called (the) complainant and her sister. . . in. . . March 2016 and criminally intimidated and threatened complainant as well as forced her to tender a written apology to the co-star, thereby forcefully seeking to create a document (valuable security) in favour of her co-star. Thus, the accused instill fear in her mind seeking to criminally extort a written apology (valuable security) from her,” the compliant said.

Ranaut alleged the accused attacked her moral character by “imputing unchastity” on her as well as by intentionally insulting her modesty and by intruding her privacy and commenting on her personal relationship with her co-star.

Producer of Kangana Ranaut's next gets relief from Bombay High Court

Bombay Court Orders FIR Against Kangana Ranaut Over Copyright Complaint

PTI | OUTLOOK INDIA (June 9, 2021)

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the police to not arrest film producer Kamal Jain, who has booked along with actor Kangana Ranaut in a cheating and copyright infringement case, till July 1.

Mumbai police had, in March this year, registered an FIR against Jain, Kangana Ranaut and her siblings Rangoli Chandel and Akshat Ranaut after Ashish Kaul, author of the book ''Didda: The Warrior Queen of Kashmir'', accused them of copyright violations and cheating.

The FIR under IPC sections for cheating, criminal breach of trust and conspiracy as well as Copyright Act was registered by Khar police in the metropolis following an order of a local court on an application filed by Kaul.

Jain's counsel Shirish Gupte on Tuesday told a division bench of Justices S S Shinde and NJ Jamadar that the producer would appear before the police and cooperate with the investigation as and when required.

Accepting the statement, the HC bench said, "In this backdrop, the arrest of the petitioner does not seem to be warranted. The petitioner shall not be arrested till July 1."

According to Kaul, he had sent an e-mail to Kangana about the storyline of his book and she used part of the story in a tweet while announcing her film without his permission.

In her tweet, Ranaut had said she would be joining hands once again with Kamal Jain to bring back the franchise after the 2019 film Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi.

The sequel will reportedly tell the story of Didda, a queen of Kashmir who despite being struck by polio in one leg was a great warrior.

Kaul, in his complaint before the magistrate, claimed he had exclusive copyrights to the life story of Didda.

THE TIMES OF INDIA (March 13, 2021)

Mumbai: Following a magistrate court’s order on Friday, an FIR was registered against actor Kangana Ranaut at Khar police station on charges relating to copyright infringement. Others named in the FIR include her sister Rangoli Chandel, brother Akshat Ranaut and producer Kamal Kumar Jain.

The FIR is registered under Indian Penal Code sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 415 (cheating by deceiving a person), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and under the Copyright Act.

Earlier, the Bandra magistrate court directed cops to investigate the matter after a private complaint was submitted by Ashish Kaul, author of the book ‘Didda: The Warrior Queen Of Kashmir’. It was submitted that Kaul is the sole copyright owner of the “unique story” and the biopic on the nationalist side of Queen Didda. Didda was the Princess of Lohar (Poonch).

The police said it was alleged that Kaul had sent an email containing the story of his book to Kangana. However, some portions were used by her in a tweet while announcing her movie. It was alleged that it was done without the author’s permission.

Kangana Ranaut moves Supreme Court; seeks transfer of cases to Shimla

THE TIMES OF INDIA (March 3, 2021)

New Delhi: Alleging threat to their life from Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, actress Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking transfer of four criminal cases pending against them in various Mumbai courts to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.

The sisters submitted that “frivolous” cases were lodged to harass them and malign their reputation and pointed out an incident when Kangana was publicly abused by Shiv Sena members. She also sought transfer of the defamation case lodged against her by famed lyricist Javed Akthar.

“Shiv Sena will leave no stone unturned to eliminate the petitioners herein, because of petitioner no. 1’s (Kangana) continuous outspokenness against the wrongs done by the Sena in collusion with big names of Bollywood,” the petition said, while giving reasons for the apex court to consider their plea to transfer the trial out of Maharashtra.

“All the FIRs and complaints in question are frivolous and have been filed with a malicious intent to harass the petitioners and malign their public image. While the petitioners have utmost respect for the courts of the country and are ready to face trial as per law, they apprehend that if the trials are conducted in Mumbai, there will be a material threat to life and property of the petitioners,” it said.

Kangana said that she had been granted Y-plus CRPF category security by the centre in view of the threat perception and that it may not be possible for them to face trial in Maharashtra as her life would be in danger.

“It is pertinent to mention that the Maharashtra government led by Shiv Sena has been harassing the petitioners. It would not be out of context to mention that the petitioner was called ‘haramkhor ladki’ by Sanjay Raut, who is a senior Shiv Sena leader and a member of Parliament. Further, the Shiv Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had illegally demolished the Pali Hill bungalow of the petitioner,” the petition stated.

Bombay High Court has ‘serious reservations’ over sedition charge against Kangana Ranaut

Swati Deshpande (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 12, 2021)

Mumbai: Observing that it has “serious reservations” over invoking the penal section of sedition against actor Kangana Ranaut, the Bombay High Court on Monday continued its interim protection till January 25 from any coercive action in the case over her tweets.

A division bench of Justice S S Shinde and Manish Pitale was hearing Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel’s plea against the case. They sought that it be quashed and the order of a magistrate directing police to register the FIR be quashed, and that pending final disposal of their petition, the entire prosecution and investigation be stayed and no coercive steps taken against them.

The HC had in November granted protection to the sisters from any coercive action and arrest. The court on Monday also directed Mumbai police not to summon the sisters for questioning till the next hearing.

At the last hearing, the HC had observed, “It has become routine that IPC 124-A (sedition) is added in complaint. For what? Are we treating citizens of the country like this?” On Monday, the HC said, “We anyway have serious reservations about invoking 124A of IPC.” Both sisters had appeared before Bandra police on January 8 to record their statements following their assurance given to the HC last November.

Ranaut’s advocate Rizwan Siddiquee challenged the October 2020 Bandra magistrate’s order that had directed police to register an FIR on a private complaint. He challenged the summons issued to them to appear before police. Munawwar Ali Sayyed, a Bollywood casting director, had filed the complaint before the magistrate. Advocate Rizwan Merchant, who appeared for Ali, sought time to file a reply to their petition. The court gave time till January 25. “The police shall not call the petitioners till that day,” the bench said.

On Monday, public prosecutor Deepak Thakare informed the bench the sisters appeared before police on January 8 from 1 pm to 3 pm. “The interrogation is incomplete... We will call her again for interrogation. What is wrong in cooperating.”

Justice Shinde said, “Whenever anyone appears before the police, they have to complete the interrogation.” She was there for two hours which should be enough, said the bench. “How many more hours” do police require, asked the bench. “How many hours do you need of their cooperation?”

Thakare replied police would like to interrogate Ranaut for three more days.

Justice Shinde suggested to the police, “You can utilise this time for some other cases. Police have other matters to investigate too. Till that time, do not call her (Ranaut) again.”

I’m being tortured, says Kangana Ranaut; records her statement with cops

V Narayan (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 9, 2021)

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel recorded statements with Bandra police in a case of sedition, filed on orders of a Bandra court on October 16, 2020, after Bollywood casting director and fitness trainer Munawwar Ali Sayyed filed a complaint.

Kangana and her sister had filed a petition before Bombay High Court to quash the FIR against them. It gave interim protection to them and told both to be present at Bandra police station on January 8 between noon and 2 pm.

Sayyed had complained that Kangana, in tweets and TV interviews, defamed Hindi film industry by portraying Bollywood as a hub of nepotism, favouritism, drug addicts, communally biased and murderers.

Police had summoned both on October 26 and 27, then on November 9 and 10 respectively, but they said they were busy with a family function at their home town. Both reached the police station around 1pm and left around 3.45 pm after they replied to questionnaires. A police officer told TOI, “All tweets and video statements she posted on social media were part of the list they put for her to answer.”

Their statements will be sent to a high-ranking officer, who will decide if both should be called again. Police said they will decide about it after January 11.

Kangana’s lawyer, Rizwan Siddiquee, said her statement had been recorded as per an HC order.

Before heading to the police station, Kangana tweeted a 1.30-minute video stating she was targeted for expressing her opinion on issues related to the country’s welfare. “Why am I being mentally, emotionally and now physically tortured? I need answers from this nation.... I stood for you, it’s time you stand for me... Jai Hind”.

“My house was demolished illegally. When I talk about welfare of farmers, cases are registered against me almost every day. For instance, there is a case against me because I laughed,” she claimed.

She mentioned in the video post a case against Rangoli for speaking against attacks on doctors during initial days of lockdown. “Even my name was added in that case, even though I was not even on Twitter at the time.” She tweeted around 5.30 pm, ‘If you are anti-India you will find lot of support, work/rewards, and appreciation. If you are a nationalist then you will have to stand alone, be your own support system and appreciate your own integrity. After hours of grilling at police station on my way to Bhopal.”

Bandra police registered a case on October 17, 2020, after Sayyed lodged a complaint that tweets and statements of Ranaut and her sister could lead to a communal problem. Kangana and Rangoli were booked under Indian Penal Code sections for common intention, sedition, promoting enmity, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.

Kangana Ranaut, sister Rangoli Chandel move Bombay High Court for quashing FIR over online posts

Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel
Swati Deshpande & Nitasha Natu | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; November 24, 2020)

Mumbai: Actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel have filed a petition before Bombay High Court to seek quashing of criminal proceedings initiated against them and, in the interim, to stay an investigation into allegations of promoting communal disharmony. HC will hear the matter on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old actor and her sister have been served three notices by Bandra police so far to appear before them for recording of statements but have failed to turn up. Ranaut wants HC to quash the “absolutely vague and baseless” FIR lodged by the police accusing her of sedition, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, and hurting religious sentiments through her social media posts.

Munnawar Ali Sayyed, a casting director, had approached the magistrate court at Bandra with a complaint against them. On October 16, metropolitan magistrate J Y Ghule had ordered police to take necessary action and investigate. Bandra police subsequently lodged an FIR.

Ranaut’s petition raised technical grounds such as the complainant not waiting for a “mandatory” period of 15 days for police to act on a complaint before escalating it. It questioned “whether the magistrate had erred in accepting the complaint within 14 days instead of the mandatory 15 days”. It said after Sayyed filed a complaint with Bandra police on September 16, he sent a “defective” complaint to a deputy commissioner of police on October 1. Then, on October 15, he filed a “flawed and ambiguous affidavit” with his “premature application” seeking orders from the magistrate court, alleging police inaction.

The law allows a person to file a ‘private complaint’ alleging police refusal to lodge an FIR. The magistrate can direct its registration and investigation.

Bandra police sent notices to the sisters to appear before them on October 26 and then on November 9. But they sought time stating they were busy with their brother’s wedding in Himachal Pradesh. The third notice asked them to appear on Monday. The petition said, “The magistrate did not even justify how any of the tweets promote enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race etc, or acts prejudicial to maintenance of communal harmony to attract offence under Section 153(A) of IPC.” The petition cites Supreme Court judgments to argue that sedition cannot be invoked merely over posts without actual incitement to violence.

The sisters said Sayyed has “blatantly misused” the judicial machinery and said HC has the power to quash an FIR, which is an abuse of the process of law and they are “continuously being served summons by police”, hence the “urgency”.

Mumbai: Bandra police have summoned actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel for the third time for inquiries in connection with a case filed against them for alleged objectionable posts on social media. Ranaut and Chandel were served a notice on Wednesday to remain present at Bandra police station on November 23 and 24. An FIR was lodged against them last month on the directions of a magistrate court at Bandra.

“We have issued a third notice to Ranaut and Chandel asking them to appear for recording of statements,” said a senior Bandra police officer. Previously, notices had been served to them in October and then November. Police sources said the actor’s representative had reached out to them asking for time as her brother’s wedding had been scheduled and asked that the date be deferred beyond November 15.

Javed Akhtar files defamation complaint against Kangana Ranaut

THE TIMES OF INDIA (November 4, 2020)

Mumbai: Bollywood veteran Javed Akhtar submitted a complaint before the Andheri magistrate court on Tuesday against actor Kangana Ranaut alleging she had made defamatory statements against him to news channels. The video of the actor allegedly making the disparaging remarks in the aftermath of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death had gone viral. The plea is scheduled to be heard on December 3.

The complaint, accusing Ranaut of harming Akhtar’s reputation, was submitted citing Indian Penal Code sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation). Under Section 500, whoever is found guilty of defaming another person is liable to be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or both.

Two other complaints have also been filed against Ranaut in the Andheri magistrate court for allegedly making communally charged statements. Last week, the court directed the police to conduct an inquiry after a lawyer, Ali Kaashif Deshmukh, submitted a private complaint alleging Ranaut and her sister, Rangoli Chandel, had posted defamatory and hateful statements against the Muslim community.

The same lawyer also submitted a complaint on October 22 against Kangana for allegedly making statements that incited communal disharmony, mocked the judiciary, disrespected the state government and tarnished Mumbai’s reputation by calling it ‘Pakistan Occupied Kashmir’.

Ranaut, too, has moved Bombay high court challenging the legality of a September 9 demolition of renovation carried out at her Bandra bungalow. The civic body had said the actor was making vague and baseless allegations to obfuscate and cover up the fact that she had unlawfully and brazenly been carrying out unlawful work. The high court has reserved its judgment.

Cops issue fresh summons to Kangana, sister in sedition case

Mumbai: Bandra police on Tuesday issued a fresh summons to actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel in connection with the sedition case lodged against them on October 17. The case was registered on orders from the Bandra court after it took cognizance of casting director Munawwar Ali Sayyed’s complaint against Kangana and her sister. In the complaint, Sayyed referred to their tweets and other statements calling Bollywood a ‘hub of nepotism’, ‘favouritism’ etc. The complaint added Ranaut was trying to divide artists on communal lines.

He alleged Rangoli too had made objectionable comments on social media to spark communal tension.

A police officer said as per the second summons, Kangana was asked to appear on November 9, and her sister, the next day. The two reportedly skipped the previous summons as they were busy with their brother’s wedding.

Court asks cops to file report on complaint against Kangana Ranaut, sister Rangoli Chandel

An advocate had filed a complaint against the siblings over an allegedly offensive tweet directed at the Tablighi Jamaat
MUMBAI MIRROR (October 30, 2020)

A magistrate court in Andheri has directed the police to submit their inquiry report on a complaint filed by an advocate against Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel, over an allegedly offensive tweet that was directed at attendees of the Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi earlier this year.

“Allegations in the complaint are based on the comments of the accused on (a) social media platform. Evidence against the accused appears to be of electronic nature. Therefore inquiry at the hands of police is necessary for proceeding against (the) proposed accused. Such enquiry will be helpful to know the roles of (the) accused,"” the court observed.

The complaint, filed by advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh, had claimed that Kangana’s sister Rangoli had made offensive and defamatory comments about Muslims from the Tablighi Jamaat sect, during the pandemic earlier this year. The magistrate noted that the Deshmukh had not filed certificates under the relevant sections of the Indian Evidence Act and that the alleged video was not on record.

Following public outrage over the tweet, Chandel’s Twitter account was suspended by the social media platform for ‘violation of Twitter Rules’. Kangana had published a video to her own twitter account reacting to the suspension of her sister’s account on April 18.

Deshmukh had submitted that he had previously filed a complaint with the Amboli police in April requesting them to take cognisance under sections of the Indian Penal Code that deal with spreading hatred and enmity among religious groups, but that no action was taken by the police.

Mirror had reported on October 17, that a magistrate court in Bandra had passed an order on a complaint by casting director and fitness trainer Munnawarali Sayyed, directing that an FIR be registered against actor Kangana and Rangoli for “trying to create hatred and communal tension between Hindus and Muslims" through their tweets.

Kangana Ranaut, sister Rangoli summoned by police in sedition case

THE TIMES OF INDIA (October 22, 2020)

Mumbai: Bandra police on Wednesday served a notice to actress Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel to appear to answer charges filed against them on an order from Bandra’s metropolitan magistrate court on October 17. The notice was served by police; one at her office, a copy was sent on their WhatsApp numbers and one through registered post.

Police said they had to appear on October 26 and 27 respectively in connection to a case of sedition filed against them. An FIR was registered against them for allegedly promoting enmity between communities, hurting religious sentiments and sedition.

The court had ordered Bandra police to probe the complaint, by Munawwar Ali Sayyed, a Bollywood casting director and fitness trainer, following their tweets and statements defaming Bollywood for two months by calling it a “hub of nepotism” and alleging “favouritism” through tweets and TV interviews.

Sayyed said Ranaut also tweeted “very objectionable” comments, which not only hurt his religious sentiments, but also feelings of many artistes, and she was trying to divide artistes on communal lines. He said Kangana, in a tweet, referred to Mumbai as ‘POK’ (Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir), which led to a public spat with ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra.

Mumbai: An FIR was registered against actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel on Saturday, a day after the Bandra magistrate court directed police to conduct investigations against the two for allegedly creating communal tension through tweets and interviews.

The Bandra police registered the FIR under Indian Penal Code Sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting their religion or religious beliefs). After the probe is completed, the police will have to submit a report before the court.

Munnawarali aka Sahil Ashrafali Sayyed, a feature film casting director, had through advocates Ravish Zamindar and Mohsin Shaikh submitted a private complaint before the Bandra magistrate court. The plea alleged that through her tweets, Ranaut was creating divisions between Hindu and Muslim artistes.

In an order pronounced on Friday, metropolitan magistrate Jaydeo Y Ghule said, “On prima facie perusal of the complaint and submissions, I found the cognizable offence has been committed by the accused. Total allegations are based upon comment on electronic media ie tweets and interviews. The accused used social media like Twitter. Thorough investigations is necessary by the expert.” Sayyed’s plea said over the last couple of months, Kangana had been defaming Bollywood by calling it a hub of nepotism, favouritism, drug addicts, communally biased people, murderers etc. “This is creating a very bad image of Bollywood in the minds of people and even creating a communal divide and rift between people of two communities and in the minds of the common man,” the plea said. He further said Ranaut had been “maliciously bringing religion in almost all her tweets” and cited several examples.

Referring to Chandel, the plea said she too had made an objectionable tweet to spread communal hatred and animosity among the two religious communities. “I say that the said tweet was so objectionable from a communal point of view that her Twitter account was instantly deleted. I say that the tweet not only hurt my religious sentiments but also the religious sentiments of Muslim community,” the plea said. The plea also cited Ranaut’s tweet against chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and a tweet calling Mumbai “POK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir).”

Sayyed said he had written to the police last month, but no action was taken. “Police investigation is necessary to ascertain the real motive behind such hate tweets and who are the people backing such hatred to create communal tensions and sentiments against the government,” the plea said.

The court said all the alleged offences against the accused are cognizable.

The Bandra police registered an FIR against actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel for sedition and promoting enmity between different groups. The police acted on an order from the Magistrate Court in Bandra, which took cognisance of a complaint lodged by casting director and fitness trainer Munnawar Ali Sayyed.

In his complaint, Sayyed said the sisters were “trying to create hatred and communal tension between Hindus and Muslims" through their tweets.

Magistrate Jaydeo Ghule directed the police to book the Ranauts under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 295A (deliberate and malicious act to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting their religion) and 124A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code.

In the private complaint filed through advocate Ravish Zamindar, Gule has pointed out several tweets by Ranaut on the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, the lynching in Palghar and her tweets calling Mumbai Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

Sayyed has alleged that she has continuously been defaming the Bollywood film industry as a hub of nepotism, favouritism and is portraying its members as “drug addicts, communally biased people, murderers, etc” through her tweets and TV interviews.

He said that an investigation is required to ascertain “the real motive behind such hate tweets and to find out who is backing such hatred to create communal tensions and sentiments against the government.”

Agreeing with the complainant, the court says “Prima facie on perusal of the complaint and submissions I found a cognisable offence has been committed by the accused….A thorough investigation is necessary by an expert.”

This is the second FIR against Ranaut for her tweets.

Citing her tweets about the Palghar lynching where she referred to the BMC as “Babur Sena”, Sayyed said "Kangana is creating divisions between Hindu artistes and Muslim artistes....is maliciously bringing religion in almost all her tweets."

The complaint also mentioned how Chandel's hate-filled tweet automatically got her account suspended.

Ranaut’s lawyer Rizwan Siddiquee said, “Order passed by the learned magistrate shall be legally dealt with on "merits" as per the procedure of law. Right of speech and expression should not be construed as promoting communal disharmony. Having personally known Kangana, I can firmly say that she is not against any religion."

The FIR, filed by a casting director, also includes charges of sedition under IPC
Vishal Singh (MID-DAY; October 18, 2020)

The Bandra Magistrate Court has given orders to register an FIR against actress Kangana Ranaut. Ranaut has been accused of inciting religious sentiments, dividing artistes on religious grounds, and promoting social malice. Petitioner Munnawarali Sayyed has demanded a probe against the actor, citing a tweet in the past.

Ranaut's sister Rangoli has also been named in the case. The complainant has also mentioned Ranaut's remarks comparing the situation in Mumbai to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. The petitioner said Ranaut was constantly trying to divide Bollywood. According to him, these tweets are creating disharmony within Bollywood and in the general public.

According to the complainant, the actor allegedly also instigated the killing of Hindu sadhus in Palghar, and referred to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as Babar Sena. As per the orders, the Bandra police has registered a case against the actor and her sister, Rangoli. Following the Bandra court's order, they registered a case under sections 153(A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) 124 (A) and 34 of the IPC, and IPC 124A (sedition).

DCP Abhishek Trimukhe confirmed that the Bandra police registered a case against Ranaut and her sister Rangoli. Ranaut's lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui tweeted, "Order passed by the Learned Magistrate shall be legally dealt with on 'merits' as per procedure of law. Right of speech & expression should not be construed as promoting communal disharmony. Having personally known Kangana, I can firmly say that she is not against any religion."

Ranaut posted on her social media account: "Meanwhile another FIR filed against me. The Pappu Sena in Maharashtra seems to be obsessing about me. Don't miss me so much, I will be back soon."

Mumbai: Actor Kangana Ranaut, who is locked in a bitter battle with the ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, met governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Sunday to complain about the “injustice” done to her. Kangana, who was accompanied by her sister Rangoli, explained her “point of view” and sought “justice” during the 45-minute meeting, said sources.

Talking to reporters after the meeting at Raj Bhavan, Kangana said she is not a politician and had met the governor as a common citizen. “I told him about the injustice meted out to me and what happened was improper. It was indecent behaviour,” she said, adding that the governor heard her like a daughter. Kangana later tweeted: “A short while ago, I met his Excellency the Governor of Maharashtra Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari ji. I explained my point of view to him and also requested that justice be given to me. It will restore faith of common citizen and particularly daughters in the system.”

The Shiv Sena-ruled BMC had demolished alleged illegal alterations at Kangana’s Bandra bungalow following a spat between the party and her after she likened Mumbai to Pakistanoccupied Kashmir and questioned Mumbai Police’s handling of the Sushant Singh Rajput case.

Refusing to comment on the meeting, Sena leader Sanjay Raut said, “The subject (Kangana) is over for us... We will just hear and note it down, but will not talk on the issue....”

After security boost, Kangana Ranaut claims her office under attack

Clara Lewis (THE TIMES OF INDIA; September 8, 2020)

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena-controlled municipal corporation carried out an inspection of Kangana Ranaut’s office on Pali Hill on Monday for alleged civic violations. The action followed on a day when the actor received Y-plus grade security cover from the Centre following a spat involving her and ruling parties in Maharashtra.

Immediately after BMC officers arrived at her office, Kangana tweeted: They have forcefully taken over my office measuring everything, also harassing my neighbors…” She said BMC warned her neighbours that they would have to bear the consequences of her actions. “I am informed tomorrow they are demolishing my property,” she said.

She also posted a video of the team inspecting her office and an earlier video of the place. The office was a row house which has been converted into a commercial establishment.

In a second tweet, she said: “I have all the papers, BMC permissions, nothing has been done illegal...BMC should send a structure plan to show the illegal construction with a notice, today they raided my place and without any notice tomorrow they demolishing (sic) entire structure.”

A neighbour said eight BMC staffers inspected the rowhouses. “One of them had only women, who did not allow them in. We have not been issued any notice. They inspected and left,” said a neighbour.

Another neighbour said he allowed the BMC staff in as he thought they had come to inspect the leakage in his house. “They were polite and were here for only 10 minutes,” he said.

A third neighbour said the fifth rowhouse is owned by Ranaut while the sixth comprises three shops on the ground floor and an office on the first floor. “These rowhouses have been around 45-50 years. Kangana had repaired her rowhouse around a couple of years ago as have the others,” he said.

BMC refused to comment. Municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal and H-West ward officer Vinayak Vispute did not respond to queries.

Meanwhile, residents of DeBreeze on 16th Road, Khar are a worried lot. Kangana is a resident of the building and in January this year, BMC had filed a complaint against Kangana and other residents at the Dindoshi sessions court for illegal extensions. Sources said on Monday, civic officials asked the session court for an urgent hearing. “BMC has been told that the matter will be heard by the regular judge on September 9,” said sources. Kangana has already declared she will be coming to Mumbai on that day and has dared anyone to stop her.

Kangana’s outburst against Mumbai Police saying she feared the force and describing the city to be as dangerous as “PoK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir)” had led to sharp criticism from Sena, Congress and NCP. Even the state BJP has said they do not support her statements.

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; September 8, 2020)

A team of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials visited Kangana’s office at Pali Hill, Bandra, yesterday, along with other properties in close vicinity, and have apparently warned residents and property owners they may demolish illegal constructions found on the premises today. Some residents reached out to Kangana’s sister Rangoli, who’s in Manali with the actress, to inform her about the developments.

Kangana, who is expected to return to Mumbai tomorrow, told us, “All work has been done with the BMC’s permission. This was their second visit, and they haven’t given notice or any plan.”

The cluster of row houses also includes properties that belong to designers Surily Goel and Manish Malhotra. While Goel said she’s not aware of any such development, Malhotra stated he’s busy with a professional commitment and has no idea about this. We reached out to the BMC officials, but they didn’t respond till the time of going to press.

Taapsee Pannu lashes out at Kangana Ranaut’s B-grade actress comment

Monika Rawal Kukreja (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 20, 2020)

After Kangana Ranaut took a dig at Taapsee Pannu and Swara Bhasker, calling them ‘B-grade actresses, needy outsiders, and their existence, a proof of nepotism’, Pannu speaks exclusively to HT and replies to all the accusations levelled against her.

On ‘we love Karan Johar’ comment:
I never mentioned anywhere that I like Karan or anyone she alleges, but I’ve never said I hate them either. So, if you don’t hate someone she hates, is it equivalent to liking that person and sucking up to that person?

On being called ‘needy outsiders’:
Just because I don’t glorify my struggles and deal with them positively, doesn’t make me any less of an ‘outsider’.

On ‘why don’t you get work’ question:
For the last three years, I’ve been doing four films a year, and have five films coming next. Yes, I’ve been replaced with star kids in some films, but the fact that Kangana and her sister (Rangoli Chandel) try to discredit me and my hard work, call me names, put wrong allegations on me, is actually an equal level of harassment, if not more.

On ‘your existence is a proof of nepotism’ remark:
None of my films are produced by any of these ‘mafia gangs’ Kangana keeps targeting. So, how is my existence because of nepotism? Or undermining someone’s achievements, and mocking, is how you prove that you’re a true successful outsider?

On ‘you say you are happy with the industry’ statement:
I refuse to be bitter. I refuse to take advantage of someone’s death for personal vendetta. As an actor who wants to address important issues, I did speak up when I was wrongfully replaced in Pati Patni Aur Woh. So, I’m not scared to voice out problems.

I started working at 17... I have taken panga since that age-Kangana Ranaut

Madhureeta Mukherjee (BOMBAY TIMES; January 21, 2020)

She took to the battlefield as the braveheart Queen of Jhansi, and now, with the slice-of-life sports drama, Panga, Kangana Ranaut is all set to up her game. And this time with jumps, dives, skill and tact on the playing field. In the film, she plays a 32-year-old mom, who chases her dream to be a kabaddi player. Much like the Kangana we know, who dares to dream big and fight every hurdle along the way. In a chat with BT, she talks about her real-life pangas, precious relationships and her idea of an ideal partner. Read on...

There is a song in Panga with inspiring lyrics, which says, Man ki jo sune, hai wohi changa. Lele, Lele Panga. Is that the mantra you live by?
I think so, and I would like to believe that I only listen to my heart and what I feel is right. I left home at an early age, so I didn’t have any overpowering figure in my life — a father figure or anyone else like that. I started working at 17, so I have taken panga since that age. Even back then, I did what my heart told me to. It could probably be the most immature thing to do, but I still did it. I thought, why should I pretend to be someone else? Why should my reactions be like my father’s or anyone else’s whose experiences are different from mine?

So, you have taken responsibility for all your choices and decisions, right or wrong...
Yes, always! When I left home, it was a very decisive moment in my life, because there was obviously a feeling like… what if it doesn’t work out. But then, I told myself…Whatever the consequences are, deal with it alone. Your parents didn’t sign up for this, so don’t turn around and go back to them’. It is not that my parents would object if I went back, but I knew that, hereon, I have to take 100% responsibility for whatever happens in my life. I have seen hard days; there were days when I slept hungry, and my parents could have easily afforded a meal for me, but I didn’t go back. I felt that it was unfair. I had chosen a path, so I had to figure it out and stick by it. Over the course of time, it becomes your second nature. You become that person.

When Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari (director) approached you with this film, you were going through a difficult time in your life. So, what convinced you to take on this role, knowing that the project will be very demanding?
Ashwiny met me during a dramatic phase of my life. In my mind, I had completed Manikarnika - The Queen Of Jhansi (2019), but I got to know that the studio was not okay with the film and wanted to bring another director on board. Eventually, I took over. I left a film called Imli and was also toying with the idea of not doing Panga. At that time, I thought I was not in the headspace to do this film, but Ashwiny told me that she would help me through it. I was shooting two units and would sometimes land on the Panga set, thinking, ‘Where am I?’ It was very unlike me. I was so lost, and she helped me through it. She is one of the most organised people I know, and her homework is on point. We both are very passionate about our work and operate from a place where we are on our own.

Panga focuses on how a supportive family can play a huge role in helping you achieve your dreams, however implausible they might seem. Your family is a big support in your life, likewise, you are like a rock-solid support system for them, too, right?
I have seen both the sides. I have also seen how miserable your life can be without your family. Initially, when I started out, my family did not support me and that was probably the worst phase of my life. Even though at that age I must have felt… to hell with them, over time, I realised that there are only those many people in the world who will be there with you all along. That’s when I decided to mend my relationship with them and be close to them, because the distance had become way too much. I wanted to nurture our relationship and have people around me, who I could share my life with. That’s precisely what we are talking about in Panga, too, that building a relationship with your close ones is everyday work and a process. Even now, while my family and I are there for each other, we can’t take it for granted. We have to work on it and invest in it emotionally, every day. I also think that I could go back and mend my relationship with them because of my success.

Could you explain that?
It would have been very unfortunate if I was not successful, because the kind of person that I am, it would have been difficult for me to mend the relationship. I am not someone who is good with failures, especially when I am dealing with people. When I fail, it does not change my perception of me, but when I look into people’s eyes and see their perception shift, I can’t take it. I completely block myself out and don’t meet anyone. I don’t think that it is anyone’s business to judge me like that. I am sure that I would not have gone back to my family if I had failed, because of my own ego, no matter how much they would have tried to help me. I am sure that I would have made a different life for myself. I am not here for people’s drama, with anyone throwing lines at me like, ‘Kaha tha humne tumhe (laughs!).’ I wouldn’t let anyone do that to me. Now, at least I can say, ‘Maine kaha tha tumko…’

You recently said that after seeing the relationship that Ashwiny and her filmmaker husband, Nitesh Tiwari share, you feel that marriage is not such a bad idea, after all? What are your reservations about marriage?
When you have so much going for yourself, you tend to get thoughts like… ‘The world needs me, why should I belong to one person (laughs!)?’ Also, with time, you can become compulsively independent in the way you live your life and operate, and the way you create your personal space. Then, marriage seems like a trap. When you are functioning better on your own, than with a partner, then, marriage doesn’t make sense, right? As partners, you should function doubly better. I see that Rangoli (sister) and her husband function well with each other. Emotionally, financially and spiritually, I should do better with my partner than I am doing on my own. If two people are doing doubly well together in these aspects, I am open to marriage. Even if it does not double up, it should not bring me down from where I am. I can see how Ashwiny and Nitesh function beautifully together and enhance each other. They are raising a lovely family together. When I see that, I think, ‘Okay, this works. This is how it should be.’

Panga also highlights an important thought in the context of our society — that a woman has no reason to stop dreaming and pursuing her dreams irrespective of her stage (marriage, motherhood) in life. While there has been a huge change in urban India, do you think films like these will bring such conversations into focus in smaller towns of our country?
A mother is the person who is most taken for granted in the family. When we were growing up, we didn’t know where the food came from, when the utensils were cleaned and how we got freshly laundered clothes every day. Everything was functional because of my mom. When I started running my own house, I had a team of four people doing all the work, and yet, it seemed a lot. My mom would do so much more for us, all by herself. We start believing that our mothers don’t have emotional needs or dreams of her own. Now, my when my mom opens to me, I can see that she is so vulnerable, and she has always been this way, but we didn’t see it. That is what should change with the film — we need to humanise our mothers; we most often don’t do that. Jaya (my character) is so much my mother, I dedicate this film to her.

How was your equation with your on-screen husband, Jassie Gill? While talking to BT, he said, ‘Mujhe bada dara ke bheja tha set pe, lekin jaisa suna tha waisa kuch hua nahi’. The film also boasts of some fabulous actors like Richa Chadha and Neena Gupta. How was the energy on the set with so many fabulous actors?
Even Ashwiny would get calls where someone would tell her, ‘She (Kangana) will destroy your film’. Jassie would get calls saying, ‘Tumhe toh bhagwan bachaye’. I think these are petty games that people play. It’s a bubble that bursts, because within 12 months, I am releasing two-three films. So, I don’t think that too many people believe in this narrative. Jassie is multi-talented, he is a fabulous singer, too. A director’s energy translates on to the entire set. Ashwiny was so homely and positive that it rubbed off on all of us. Even with someone like Richa, we may have different political beliefs, but that does not come in the way while working. The realm of art is such that it rises above political beliefs. I was the happiest to know that Javed Akhtar sir is writing the lyrics. For me, it is an honour to be working with him, even though our political ideologies are different. When I become a producer, I will pledge to never be coloured by any prejudices or people’s personal choices. Whether it is your belief, sexuality, colour or caste…how does it matter and why should it matter when you are working on a film? That is the kind of standard and behaviour I stand up for.

Initially, there were stories about Ashwiny and you not getting along, but she cleared those rumours and even says that today, you both are close friends and there are no pretenses whatsoever…
Personally, I feel that most people I work with and have an equation with, are 100% sweet on my face, but then they talk differently when they go into the media space. I never expected Ashwiny to speak so highly of me, because I have learnt this lesson in the industry that if you are an outsider, it suits their narrative to talk about you in a certain way. Even Ashwiny was surprised to see how some people met me so warmly, but behind my back they were different people. She comes from such a positive place that there were never any insecurities with her.

I have no time for people with any kind of baggage-Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut on why marriage is not a compulsion right now, the struggle to rehabilitate sister Rangoli Chandel after an acid attack and how nepotism can only end with action, not empathy
Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 20, 2020)

Your upcoming film, Panga, is about surmounting hurdles and pursuing dreams. For a small-town girl with no godfather in the film industry, how difficult was it for you to chase after a Bollywood dream?
It wasn’t all that difficult for me because I left home when I was only 15. And the minute I broke away, I could breathe freely and operate like a single, independent entity. There was no explaining to parents, no listening to the bitter city experiences of family elders and no societal pressures tying me down. I could take risks, telling myself that the worst thing that could happen was failure and I was ready for the consequences. It was harder for my character, Jaya Nigam, because as a mother she couldn’t abandon her child or walk away from her marriage. But at 30, she wants to chase her dream of being a kabaddi player because dreams are not limited by age. For me, it was an insight into a life very different from mine, where it was important for the family to understand that this woman, till now, has only given, and expected nothing in return. Jaya doesn’t have a choice. She has to raise a family but is unwilling to compromise on this dream. She has to strike a balance between the two, and that’s how it should be. Today, fortunately for me, I’ve got my family back. But I know that somewhere success had a huge role to play in the reconciliation. Had I not made it in films, I might have lost out on both my family and my dream, and that would have been devastating.

Alone, in a big, heartless city with no family support; how terrifying was it for the teenager Kangana?
Well, I fell into bad company straightaway. Some people took advantage of the fact that I was alone and couldn’t confide in my parents, and I’ve experienced the worst a person can go through. It toughened me up and made me the person I am. But I wouldn’t want my children to go through such extremes. I would want to be there for them.

Marriage and children, is that a dream now?
When I was in my 20s, I was desperate for a family. I felt incomplete and thought my own people would make me feel complete. With time, I have come to realise that this is not true. So, right now there’s no compulsion to be a wife and a mother. I’m at a phase when I’m just beginning to enjoy my life. If someone can add to it, I’m fine, but if, as a woman, I am expected to ensure he’s emotionally stable, enhance his spiritual growth, be lucky and bring him financial windfalls and take on the responsibility of a home, children and family, then, I’m not up for that. At the moment, I have no time for people who come with any kind of baggage.

Why not?
Well, for the longest time, we’ve been emotionally scarred by what happened to my sister Rangoli (Chandel) after the acid attack. It took a long time, but finally, she is happy, with a child all of us dote on. Her husband’s business is doing well and my mamma, who was grappling with some health issues, is fully recovered. Also, the half-a-dozen cases filed against me have been dismissed as the allegations couldn’t be proved. My brother Akshit and I have just launched a production house and we’re starting from scratch, we aim to do some good work. This is a wonderful time for all of us; I’ve never felt so good. The world is respectful; there’s a lot to do and give. And for the first time, I can think about myself. Let me be a little self-centered and enjoy what I have earned. I don’t have the time and energy to invest in another family. That can come later.

Have you seen Chhapaak, in which Deepika Padukone played an acid attack survivor?
No, with my own film, Panga, coming up, I haven’t had the time but I will watch it for sure.

How difficult was it to deal with the acid attack on Rangoli?
It was horrific! You are hurt if your loved one gets even a scratch or a pimple, so, you can imagine the kind of pain one would feel to see their face melt. Outward appearance is far more important to a woman than a man, and taking that away from her is a fool-proof way of isolating her from the world. I was just 19, on the threshold of a bright career, when the attack happened and it was a long, hard struggle to deal with this kind of perverse, sexist cruelty. Financially too, I was not strong back then. Girls around me would feel depressed by a bad hair day or because a meal was not to their liking. I was grappling with something far more real and yet had no time to sit and cry. I did tacky films, took on roles I did not deserve, accepted guest appearances, so my sister could be treated by the best surgeon in India. It took 54 surgeries.

Your mentor, Anurag Basu, recently described you as a strong, ambitious girl and says he’s proud of where you have reached.
Anurag is my godfather. He just picked me, auditioned me and gave me a break. There were people around, like Gangster producer Mahesh Bhatt, who wanted Chitrangda Singh, because he thought I was too young to play the mother of a five-year-old kid. He was right, too, because I was still a minor then. But Anurag believed in me and fought for me.

He also worked a lot on me. I was a theatre actor, but Anurag didn’t want me to act. He wanted me to surrender myself to the camera. The foundation of my acting, which is strong, subtle, natural and universally appealing, comes from him. I will always be building on that. He’s one of the best directors we have and I have only taken from him, not added anything to his life. I hope someday I get the chance to give something back, too. I feel a karmic connection with Anurag and I’m sure we are going to collaborate again and create some great work.

Pooja Bedi’s daughter Alaya F, who debuts as Saif Ali Khan’s daughter in Jawaani Jaaneman, recently said that being a star kid “we are privileged even in our struggles”. As someone who brought the term nepotism to the fore, what do you feel about this disparity in the industry?
One day I was thinking that as a star kid, what would it take to empathise with an outsider and say we understand the exploitations they go through. The important thing is not just to imagine but also empathize and work towards ending the culture of exploitation of outsiders from a position of power.

You’ve started your own company and you are in a position of power today. Will you put an end to this nepotism culture?
I think nepotism is completely based on the fact that people, who are not as deserving, get a chance, as opposed to those who deserve it. Because of such practices, most people are lagging behind. I will always go for the person who is best suited for the job, that’s the basis of my work ethics. I want the best for my project, without personal gains or emotional pressures. I’ll be doing myself a favour working with deserving people.

Panga will be your second Republic Day release after Manikarnika last year...
Yes, Republic Day has been lucky for me and I hope that continues. The ability to keep the family together while retaining her individuality is something a mother does so wonderfully. And I’m grateful to Ashwiny (Iyer Tiwari, Panga director) for giving me the opportunity to live this role and experience.

If a book were to be written on my life, I feel Rangoli should be the narrator-Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut
Months after she decided to helm her big-screen memoir, Kangana Ranaut hints at a biography penned by sister Rangoli Chandel
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; October 23, 2019)

KanganaIn February, Kangana Ranaut had stated that writer K V Vijayendra Prasad and she had begun working on her biopic, which would be directed by her. However, with several films — including Judgementall Hai Kya, Thalaivi and Dhaakad — and the impending launch of her studio vying for her attention, the actor had little time to follow up on her ambitious biopic. While it may be a long wait before we see Ranaut's journey on the big screen, the actor teases that a biography may be on the cards as well.

Talking to mid-day, the actor said she is keen that her journey be told from the point of view of sister Rangoli Chandel. "If a book were to be written on my life, I feel Rangoli should be the narrator. She is the best person to narrate my story as she has seen me from my childhood to what I am today. She can [tell the story] from the point of view of an elder sister." She admits that her meteoric but troubled rise in the world of showbiz has the ingredients for an inspiring tale. "Rangoli has some interesting observations about my transformation [into one of the top actors of Bollywood]. If I tell my story, I might be too harsh on myself and may not glorify my achievements, and that is unfair to the struggles [I've endured]. So, it will be better if Rangoli says it truthfully and objectively. I won't be able to do justice to it. She has a great story to tell herself as an acid attack survivor. The way we found strength in each other and grew up together makes for a beautiful story."

It was a shock because it came from someone I always admired-Taapsee Pannu on war of words with Kangana Ranaut

Taapsee Pannu
Funny tweets and jibes aside, Taapsee Pannu opens up on the recent war of words with Kangana Ranaut
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; August 15, 2019)

Taapsee Pannu on war of words with Kangana Ranaut: Shocked since it came from someone I admiredShe is less of 'sasti' and more of sassy. And an original at that. Weeks after Rangoli Chandel called her out for her "double filter" comment on Kangana Ranaut and opened the floodgates of a public feud, Taapsee Pannu seems almost amused by the episode. Point in case being her recent jibe — when an entertainment portal recently dubbed her the new queen of Bollywood, Pannu, in her cheeky humour, said she didn't want to be called 'queen' lest she be accused of copying again.

"If I meet her, I will graciously walk up and say hello to her, or even her sister," smiles Pannu, when Ranaut and her endorsement of Chandel's comments comes up in our conversation, indicating that she harbours no animosity towards her. One would expect the two to get along, given the similarities — no, not the curly hair; instead, the shared passion for women-oriented cinema, their drive to give female actors an equal footing in the industry and their fearless attitude. Pannu says she too was surprised at the misdirected animosity. "It was triggered because I said she needs double filter. Even Anurag [Kashyap] and I need that. How is that a negative thing? I saw her as an honest person. It's sad that she says a woman cannot call out another woman. I will call out people basis who is wrong and right, and not based on what gender they belong to. Feminism is about an equal platform," argues the actor, dropping the F-bomb, Ranaut's oft favoured weapon in her artillery after the N-bomb.

"She has always spoken about how a woman should support another woman, but I did not hear any words of praise for my films. There are five women in Mission Mangal. Is she praising us? I am her junior and don't have [as vast] a filmography as her, but I have done a decent number of films for someone to be appreciative of it."

Catfights are not in her DNA; Pannu would rather make light of the situation, have a laugh and put it all in the past. But she admits that the turn of events has "disappointed" her. "It was a shock because it came from someone I always admired. I felt disappointed. When someone you had put on a pedestal does this, it makes you question if you were right in looking up to her. In my response, I said I am happy being a copy because she is a damn good actress. I am sasta because she claims to be the highest paid [female actor]. I don't see it as derogatory. Just because she is saying it, doesn't mean it's the ultimate truth. She didn't expose me; she exposed herself. It's awkward but I won't hold it against her. I love her as a performer and will continue to do so."
