'Dial 100' director Rensil DSilva discusses how he drew from experience of meeting cops while writing Manoj Bajpayee-Neena Gupta starrer

Rensil DSilva, who previously helmed Kurbaan (2009) and 24, among others, has a way with thrillers. He knows only too well that the charm of a thriller lies in a compelling premise and intensive prep. So, before he began writing Dial 100 that sees Manoj Bajpayee’s cop character in a catch-22 situation during his overnight duty, the director visited the Police Control Room in Mumbai to gain complete understanding of its functioning.
“Today, we are part of the OTT world where every [story] is realistic. So, I wanted to make a realistic film without taking too many liberties. [As prep], we met the [then] police commissioner [Param Bir Singh] who sent us to the control room. Visiting it was an eye-opener for me. The cops answer distressing calls every 10 minutes, [with complaints ranging from] domestic abuse to suicide. Seeing them [handle such high-pressure situations], I wondered, what was their motivation to come to work the next day. If you hear 10 such calls, [it affects] you psychologically. The pandemic has brought mental health issues, such as depression, suicidal feelings and loneliness, to the forefront. I thought my film can address certain issues,” says the director.
Zeroing in on his three leads was a no-brainer for D’Silva. Having worked with Bajpayee in Aks (2001) and Sakshi Tanwar in 24, he says they were his “first and only choice” for the ZEE5 film. “The only person I hadn’t worked with before was Neena Gupta. I am glad she said yes.”
While Gupta’s Seema Pallav may use devious means to settle old scores with Bajpayee’s cop character, the writer-director strived to keep their motivations honest. “I don’t think anyone is right or wrong; it’s a matter of perspective. Neena ji is doing what a mother in her place would have done; similarly, Manoj is doing what he should be doing. Right and wrong is for the audience to judge. Their moral compass is intact because the movie’s underlying theme is that parents will go to any length for their child.”
Sushant Singh Rajput case: Social media accounts maligning Mumbai cops tracked; arrests soon

Mumbai: Police are looking into fake social media accounts set up after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
“The fake accounts will be in thousands. We are collecting details. These accounts were used to do false propaganda and to malign the police force for the last few months,” city police chief Param Bir Singh said.
Investigations by cyber police have found that since the actor’s suicide, fake accounts were created to demoralise Mumbai police. “The police commissioner has been trolled with abusive contents on the official Instagram handle and other official online media handles. And all the abusive messages to Mumbai police were hashtagged with the late actor’s name,” said a police officer.
Mumbai cyber DCP Rashmi Karandikar told TOI, “There are multiple fake social media account holders trolling the Mumbai police commissioner on different platforms and are using abusive language against him and the force. Hence an FIR has been registered against those account holders under Section 67 of IT Act,” she said. “Earlier, an FIR was registered on September 2 against a suspect who used a morphed image of the official Twitter account of Mumbai police commissioner and through it posted derogatory contents. We have started the probe in both matters,” said Karandikar.
The cyber police team has asked offices of all the social media platforms to provide details of the fake accounts created in the last three months since the actor’s death and the IP address used to create the accounts.
“Initially, the cyber police had asked to block all the accounts and the messages. Now we have started collecting details of accounts,” an officer said.
The fake accounts were used to troll the police commissioner’s social media handle with hashtags like #JusticeForSSR and #SushantConspiracyExposed.
The unknown account holders have been booked under the Information Technology Act for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form. The offence attracts a maximum punishment of 5 years and with fine which may extend to Rs 5 or 10 lakh.

People behind social media handles that unfairly targeted Mumbai police for its investigation in the Sushant Singh Rajput case will not be allowed to get away with it. We have been tracking these handles for some time now and some arrests will be made soon,” Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh told Mumbai Mirror on Monday. Its conclusion that there was no foul play in Sushant’s death now vindicated by an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) report calling it a clear case of suicide, the city police is now in the process of filing cases against Twitter and Facebook accounts that accused it of a “sell-out” and destruction of evidence.
Mumbai police faced some vile abuse before and after the Bihar police was allowed to file an FIR in the case and the case itself was eventually transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) mid-August. The Bihar police had stepped in after Sushant’s family filed a case in Patna, accusing Mumbai police of not investigating the foul play angle seriously. The family also alleged that over Rs 15 crore from the actor’s account had disappeared and they suspected Sushant’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty had siphoned off the money.
Rhea and her brother Showik were eventually arrested not for murder or money laundering, but for procuring drugs.Though multiple agencies have been involved, no evidence of money laundering has been brought to light so far.
“Truth always prevails!,” Singh said, adding that he never had any doubt about the investigation carried out by his men or the findings of the post-mortem carried out at Cooper Hospital. “The forensic team also did a professional job. Our collective conclusion was that Sushant committed suicide. It was just a set of motivated social media accounts spreading disinformation to discredit Mumbai police. The findings of AIIMS are not any different from what Cooper Hospital doctors had concluded. In fact, the Supreme Court was also satisfied with our investigations,” he said.
Singh said while allowing the transfer of the case to CBI, the SC had authorised the Mumbai police to investigate the matter further. “Accordingly, an FIR was registered against Sushant’s sister and doctor based on Rhea’s complaint that they gave him medicines without any medical prescription. This investigation is also now with the CBI,” he said.
On Mumbai police’s failure to register an FIR in the case, Singh said an ADR (accidental death report) was filed as is the norm in suicide cases. “Our investigations were ongoing when the case was transferred. If we had found any evidence of foul play or abetment, we would have converted the ADR into an FIR,” he said, adding that Sushant’s family had not named any suspects in the case in a statement recorded on June 16. “We never said no to registering an offence in the matter. The family was categorical that they did not wish to name anyone in the complaint. The family never came back to record a fresh statement despite our officers calling them several times,” Singh said.
He said in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, when the Mumbai police was losing men nearly every day, it was demoralising to face charges of unprofessionalism and collusion with an “imaginary set of murderers.” Singh said he hopes that the CBI will carry out a proper investigation. “It is a very professional agency and it will look into all aspects professionally and reach a proper conclusion.”

Actor Rhea Chakraborty, in a fresh statement made through her advocate, has said she neither knows state minister Aaditya Thackeray nor has ever met him, reports Rebecca Samervel. “She has not spoken to him telephonically or otherwise, though she has heard of him as a leader of the Shiv Sena,” the statement said.
Bihar police have booked Rhea for allegedly abetting the suicide of her boyfriend, actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Unsubstantiated claims have been made about Thackeray’s link to the case.
Rhea’s statement further said that due to an incident that took place last April, when she had accused one of Sushant’s sisters of misbehaving with her, her ties with his family had been strained right from the beginning.

Mumbai: In a fresh statement made through her advocate, Satish Maneshinde, actor Rhea Chakraborty has said, “Even after Sushant’s death when a list of 20 people was made to attend the funeral, Rhea’s name was not in it.” The statement said Rhea is the daughter of an Indian Army surgeon and a Maharashtrian housewife.
It said Sushant Singh Rajput and Rhea began dating soon after they attended a party hosted by the film fraternity in April last year. Maneshinde said the couple officially moved in together in December 2019 and lived at Mount Blanc, Bandra, until Rhea left on June 8. Sushant was found dead in same flat on June 14.
Rhea said Sushant had argued with his sister over her alleged misbehaviour and it was he who insisted that Rhea leave their home in suburban Bandra on June 8 as one his other sisters was supposed to come there to live with him.
“Sushant had been calling his family, informing them of his decision to move out of Mumbai and requesting them to come and meet him. After several days of Sushant’s calling and crying, his sister agreed to come to live with him on June 8,” the statement said.
Sushant requested Rhea to move in with her parents temporarily, but she was uncomfortable leaving him, the statement said. “Rhea had been suffering from her own anxiety issues and often endured panic attacks. Sushant’s conduct also aggravated these conditions,” it said, adding that on June 8, Rhea had arranged to have a therapy session and requested Sushant if she could leave after it was done. “However, Sushant told her to leave immediately before his sister arrived. Thus, Rhea reluctantly left and informed Sushant to let her or her brother know about anything he required or in case he needed to talk,” the statement said, questioning as to why Sushant’s family had waited for over 40 days to get the FIR registered in Bihar.
Maneshinde said that the comments made before the Supreme Court on August 11 made it evident that it had to do with politics more than with the truth. The statement said that Rhea only knows and had met actor Dino Morea socially as he is her senior in the film industry.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate on Monday recorded the statement of Sushant’s father K K Singh as part of its probe into the money-laundering case.

Bank account audit shows no fraud: Cops

Mumbai: A forensic audit of Sushant Singh’s financial details gathered from his bank did not show any instances of fraud or embezzlement, a police officer said. The Mumbai police on Monday received the audit report prepared by Grant Thornton, a tax advisory firm. Police commissioner Param Bir Singh said, “The investigation team is going through the report.” The police had sought the services of the firm to carry out a forensic audit.
The police probing the case had accessed Sushant’s bank transactions for the last 18 months and found Rs 18 crore in the account statement of which Rs 4.5 crore was the balance as deposits. Sushant’s father had alleged that money was siphoned off from the late actor’s accounts.
The report also speaks about money spent by Sushant and his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty for their Europe vacation trips, household expenses and staff payments that Sushant made from 2019 to 2020 so far.
No evidence of abetment found against Rhea Chakraborty, says Mumbai Police

Mumbai: A day before Supreme Court decides on the next course of action in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, the city police iterated they have not found evidence to book his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty for abetment.
Police commissioner Param Bir Singh said, “The confidential report with all circumstantial probe details and evidence will be submitted in a sealed envelope for perusal of the Supreme Court. The state government will also submit an affidavit sought by the SC along with their view in the case.”
“The autopsy reports submitted by a team of five doctors attached to Cooper Hospital on June 22 confirming Sushant died due to hanging will be submitted to the SC. We questioned Rhea Chakraborty and a few others more than twice but did not find anything suspicious,” a police officer said.
Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging from the ceiling fan at his Bandra flat on June 14.
According to the autopsy report, no struggle marks or external injuries were found on the actor’s body. The cause of death is mentioned as asphyxia due to hanging. His nails were found clean too. “The FSL report—viscera and chemical analysis—did not find poisoning in the body or any chemical substance or drugs. The CA report showed Sushant had consumed Red Bull, pomegranate and orange juice but there was no poisonous substance in it,” the police officer said.
The statements of 56 people, including five doctors who had treated the actor and confirmed he was on medication for depression, will also be part of the report. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report of his gadgets - laptop and mobile - that contains the searches on “painless death” and his former manager Disha Salian’s suicide with a mention of his name, and call records will also be submitted, sources said.
Sushant Singh Rajput case: Mumbai Police chief defends the investigation

Sushant reportedly died by suicide on June 14 at his Bandra residence. Even as Mumbai Police continued with their investigation, the call for a CBI inquiry from the actor’s fans and some celebrities, like Shekhar Suman and Roopa Ganguly, got louder. On July 25, the Patna Police registered an FIR against Sushant’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and six others, based on a complaint filed by his father, K K Singh. A team from Patna Police reached Mumbai on July 27, while IPS officer Vinay Tiwari arrived in Mumbai on August 2 to take the investigation ahead, but is currently in quarantine.
Talking about the tussle over jurisdiction between Mumbai and Patna, the Mumbai Police chief said, “There is no question of noncooperation, we are legally examining whether they (Bihar police) have jurisdiction or not.”
Rhea Chakraborty was one of the 56 people questioned by the Mumbai Police. Singh said, “Her (Rhea) statement was recorded twice and she was called to the police station four-five times.” Here are some of the key points from the statement he made to the media:
‘Family did not raise any suspicion earlier, nor did they file a written complaint’Singh said that Mumbai Police had recorded Sushant’s father (K K Singh), three sisters (Mitu, Nitu and Priyanka) and brother-in-law’s (Siddharth Tawar) statements on June 16. “Unhone bayan mein kisi ke upar shaq vyakt nahi kiya tha, suspicion kisi ke upar nahi dikaya tha. Ek do bayan mein aisa bhi aaya tha ke professional pressure ki wajah se aur joh unka treatment chal raha jis illness ke liye uss karan ho sakta hai unhone suicide ki ho.”
He further added, “We had tried to call them for further corroboration, too. His brother-in-law and sister later met our Joint Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, but they didn’t express any complaint then. Aur yeh jitni statements hui, parivaar ke sadasyon ki, uss samay unke jo doosre brother-in-law hai, joh Haryana mein varisht police officer hai, O P Singh, woh maujood the. Joh sabse pehli statement unhone (K K Singh) ne di thi woh Mumbai Police ko di thi. Aur joh first information hoti hai, usko bahut sanctity law attach karta hai.”
However, when Singh, was asked about Sushant’s father’s claim that he had complained to the Mumbai Police on February 25, expressing concerns about the actor’s well-being, Singh said, “Nahi, humein jaankari nahi hai kaunsi complaint hai...writing mein kaha hai.. humein copy vagairah denge to avashya hum uss angle se bhi…”
Alerted Mumbai Police in February that Sushant’s life is in danger: Sushant’s father
Responding to the Commissioner’s In a self-made video released yesterday, Sushant’s father K K Singh said, “25 February ko maine Bandra Police ko aagah kiya tha ki mere bete Sushant ki jaan ko khatra hai, parantu unhone kuchh nahi kiya. 14 June ko jab mere bete ki jaan chali gayi, toh humnein 25 February ko namik logon ke viruddh action lene ko kaha, parantu 40 din beet jaane ke baad bhi unhone koi karvahi nahi ki. Main Patna gaya aur apne thane mein FIR darj ki. Patna Police turant action mein aayi. Parantu mujrim ab bhaag rahe hai. Hum sabhi ko chahiye ke Patna Police ki madad karein.”
No written complaint was submitted: Mumbai Police
Following K K Singh’s video, Mumbai Police released a statement, which said, “Today, K K Singh, Father of late Sushant Singh Rajput, has released a statement saying that the family had made a written complaint to Bandra Police on 25th February. It must be clarified that no such written complaint has been addressed to Bandra Police station on that date. However, one O P Singh IPS, brother-in-law of late Shri Sushant Singh Rajput had sent some WhatsApp messages to the then DCP Zone 9 regarding the matter. The then DCP, Zone 9 had called Shri O P Singh and requested that a written complaint is mandatory for any enquiry or action. However, Mr Singh wanted this to be resolved informally, to which the then DCP Zone 9 clearly told him that it was not possible (sic).”
‘He googled words like painless death, bipolar disorder and his own name’
Sharing information about Sushant’s search history online, the Commissioner said, “Jitna humne examine kiya hai unka google history, ussme woh examine karte the painless death, bipolar disorder aur apne naam ko baar-baar search karte the.”
‘No evidence of misappropriation of funds right now’
Addressing the allegations of misappropriation of funds by Rhea Chakraborty, Singh said, “Sushant Singh Rajput had around Rs. 18 crore in his account, from that Rs. 4.5 crore are still in his account and FDs. Joh Rs. 13-14 crore kharcha hua, woh jitni jaankari dikhai deti hai, ussme aisa nahi lagta ke koi paisa Rhea Chakraborty ke account mein gaya tha. But we are looking at the details with the help of financial experts.”
No evidence of a party at Sushant’s residence
Talking about reports in the media claiming there was a party held at Sushant’s Bandra residence the night before he died, Singh said, “We have examined the CCTV footage of the building for June 13 and 14, we know about the people present in the flat. Joh unke saath rehnewale chaar-paanch vyakti the, unke alawa aur kisi party ke baare mein humein kuch bhi evidence nahi milli hai.”
‘Sushant messaged his lawyer and asked — Who is Disha Salian?’
There have been various theories doing the rounds in the media that Disha Salian’s death is linked to Sushant’s demise. “Apart from Disha and her fiancé, there were four more people at the house on the night of June 8. Statements of all those present and her parents were recorded, the CCTV footage was checked. Ussme yeh spasht dikhayi deta hai ke inn chhe vyakti ke alawa, wahan koi aur nahi tha, koi wahan ke political leader haazir nahi the, iske alawa koi aur connection nahi hai. Unke parivaar ke sadasyoon ne, mata-pita ne, aur friends joh uss party mein maujood the sabne statement diya hai ke issme koi suspicion nahi hai,” the Commissioner said.
‘Sushant was emotionally disturbed when his name was linked to Disha Salian’s death’
As per the investigation, the actor was upset when his name was linked to Disha Salian’s death. Singh shared, “Jab unka naam, Disha Salian ke suicide se linkkiya gaya, toh isse bahut emotionally disturb ho gaye the, iss prakar ka bayano mein aaya hai. Disha Salian was working for Cornerstone, a management company. She had met Sushant Singh Rajput only in the month of March. Lekin social media pe kuchh faltu rumours spread kiye gaaye, unko link kiya gaya suicide se. That disturbed him.In fact, he messaged his lawyer and asked, ‘Who is Disha Salian?’”
