om the battle within
BOMBAY TIMES (June 13, 2022)

Rashtra Kavach OM, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanjana Sanghi, is among the most anticipated action entertainers of the year. The trailer, which was launched recently, showcases Aditya as a valiant soldier fighting for the nation and his family. The actor is seen in some action-packed, daredevil stunts shooting big guns. This is also the first time that Sanjana will be seen in an action avatar, for which she trained for many months.

Aditya says, “I am elated to be a part of this film. I hope the audience gives me the same amount of love and appreciation as an action hero as they have in my earlier films.”

Sanjana adds, “This film is extremely special for me. It has helped me discover an entirely different side to myself as an actor, as I got to do action so early in my career.”

Talking about the film, director Kapil Verma adds, “I had fun working with Ahmed (Khan), Aditya and Sanjana, and we hope the audience enjoys the film on July 1.”

Producer Ahmed Khan shares, “Rashtra Kavach OM will keep you on the edge of your seat with its power-packed action and will also fill your heart with emotions.”

Shariq Patel, CBO of Zee studios, said, “With this film, we continue to invest in high-octane action films and present a new action star in Aditya Roy Kapur. I’ve seen the entire team put in its best effort in making this an entertaining film, and it was indeed our privilege to work with such a dedicated cast and crew. ”

The movie also features Jackie Shroff, Ashutosh Rana, Prachi Shah, and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles.

Zee Studios and Ahmed Khan present, Rashtra Kavach OM, A Paper Doll Entertainment production, produced by Zee Studios, Shaira Khan and Ahmed Khan. The film releases on July 1.

We didn’t have a reference point for my character in Om as no female character has done as much action-Sanjana Sanghi

Sanjana Sanghi: Playing an action girl so early on is surreal

Sanjana Sanghi discusses training in hand-to-hand combat and weapon use to pull off fight sequences in Om: The Battle Within

For her second film, Sanjana Sanghi has chosen the heavy-duty actioner Om: The Battle Within. While co-star Aditya Roy Kapur is familiar with the genre, thanks to Malang (2020), it was new territory for Sanghi after the romantic drama, Dil Bechara (2020). “Adi and I prepped together for months. I have performed all my stunts on my own. We didn’t have a reference point for the character of Kavya because no female character [in recent Hindi films] has done as much action,” she says.

Trying something new can be nerve-wracking as well as deeply satisfying. The actor acknowledges that the intense prep for Kapil Verma’s directorial venture has made her confident of tackling action films in the future. “Playing a leading action girl so early on in my career is a surreal feeling. I had never seen myself in this light. [Ahead of the shoot], I did weapon training and hand-to-hand combat so that I could pull off the stunts. I was recently dubbing for the film, and it felt great to see the sequences.”

The Ahmed Khan-backed movie, which went on floors in December 2020, is almost complete, save for a song. Collaborating with Kapur for the first time has been a learning experience. “Adi had pulled off action in Malang. I needed hand-holding because the genre of action requires a different skill set. He had to guide me through it.”

I rejected Tiger 3, Bachchan Pandey and 12 other films-Jatin Sarna

Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 12, 2022)

For Jatin Sarna, life has come full circle. The actor, who was once dropped from Akshay Kumar-led Airlift (2016), recently declined a role in Kumar’s upcoming comedy Bachchan Pandey. “I was heartbroken when I lost Airlift,” he recalls.

Talking about the project, which he lost to actor Purab Kohli, Sarna shares, “I’m a huge Akshay Kumar fan. When I was cast for the role, I was excited and my family thought it was my big break. But one day, I realised baat bigad gayi hai. I kept calling them, but there was no response. I went to meet director Raja Krishna Menon, and found out they had already started shooting. They dropped me and went with a known face.”

Interestingly, after watching the movie, the disappointment turned into relief, the 37-year old shares. “I felt better that it didn’t happen; it was not an exciting role anyway,” he adds.

The Sacred Games actor reveals the reason he rejected the upcoming movie was the role he was being offered. “I didn’t like the character; it didn’t really excite me,” he admits.

Not just Bachchan Pandey, Sarna confesses he has refused close to 12 movies recently, which also included the Salman Khan-starrer, Tiger 3. “I rejected 12 films. I was offered Tiger 3 and Ahmed Khan’s OM: The Battle Within with actor Aditya Roy Kapur,” he says and adds, “I don’t like dost, chacha, bhatija roles anymore. I want to work with all the stars, but it has to be substantial. Simply sharing screen space with big actors is not my priority.”

I can’t believe I am turning 25, started as a child actor-Sanjana Sanghi

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 2, 2021)

Sanjana Sanghi is back to work, and recently shot action scenes in Russia for her next, OM: The Battle Within. She sounds excited when she tells us that the audience will get to see “a new side” to her. “It was satisfying to shoot, in the sense that you could go ahead and do that with all precautions. Also, what we filmed there was very exciting for me as an actor. I’ve been prepping for the sequence for a while now, and to finally do that was creatively very exciting,” says the actor, who turns 25 today.

Sanghi says she takes her birthdays seriously, and expects the same from her loved ones. “It has always been a grand celebration. In school, it used to be in the middle of our half-yearly exams, but I’d still have a party... I love getting everyone in my life together. Last year was the first time I couldn’t do that, but my closest friends came outside my gate and sang happy birthday,” she recalls fondly.

This year, she plans to ring in her birthday in Maldives with her close friends. We talk to her before she has taken off, so she has jitters amid the pandemic. “I just wanted to zoom out a bit, take notice of where’s one at and where life is. A little bit of the ocean and nice sunsets could do that,” says the actor, who debuted as a lead in 2020’s Dil Bechara.

Exclaiming that she finds it surreal that she’s hit the “big 25th”, she says, “I’ve been the younger sibling, the little one at home. In the industry, I started off as a child actor (in Rockstar; 2011)... When I look back, there is so much growth, experiences that have added to the person I am now. I can’t believe I’m turning 25! Maybe once I cut the cake, it’ll sink in.”

Even though Kizzie Basu is very far from a female action lead, Ahmed Khan felt he saw something-Sanjana Sanghi

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 20, 2021)

Actor Sanjana Sanghi’s Bollywood journey as a lead actor kicked off in 2020 with Dil Bechara, which ranked among the most-watched films on OTT. And now, she’s already shooting for her second, Om, an action thriller, alongside Aditya Roy Kapur.

She feels it’s been ‘wonderful’ so far. “Since Rockstar (2011) when I was a child actor, we are audition actors. Be it just an ad or a small part in a film, you would get an audition call. You would then try and give your best in that room. When it wouldn’t work out, you won’t get a call back. Coming from there, to people seeing my work in Dil Bechara…the filmmaker I dreamt of collaborating with, saying they desire to work with me has been amazing. It’s been special,” says the 24-year-old.

Making the right choices, she adds, is tough. Which is why she was careful about which project she took up as her second film. It was Om’s director Ahmed Khan who called her up after watching Dil Bechara. “I found the journey of this one very exciting, because you are in a place where you are able to choose the genre. What was really at the back of my mind is that it has to be different from my first film, and it will really push me as an actor. The fans who are generous with their love, it was great for them too. I was kind of taking my time to lock in my second film. I got a call from Ahmed sir, who told me he’s making this massive action thriller with Adi. He said even though Kizzie Basu is very far from a female action lead, he felt he saw something,” Sanghi says with a laugh.

After she came on board the film, the team started shooting right amid the Coronavirus pandemic, in October 2020. And Sanghi admits that she did feel ‘really scared’ while shooting. “It (the pandemic) was peaking at that time, but what we realised two months down into filming, is that once the bubble got created and we got used to precautions, they became a part of our day. As actors, you are the only ones not wearing masks, so that paranoia sticks. After a couple of days, you tend to forget that, you just feel lucky that even in the midst of everything you are able to work and get such a huge film going,” she adds.

Working with Aditya Roy Kapur made me feel liberated-Sanjana Sanghi

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; February 28, 2021)

Recently, Sanjana Sanghi wrapped up another schedule of her upcoming action film, OM: The Battle Within, which has her opposite Aditya Roy Kapur. Directed by action director Tinu Verma’s son, Kapil Verma, the movie has been in production for a few weeks now.

Talking about her experience of collaborating with Aditya and Kapil, Sanjana says, “We talk a lot on the set. We trust and help each other as co-workers. The film has certain elements that are about things which we haven’t seen before. It’s mutual trust between co-stars that comes in handy at such times. There’s no ego between Aditya and me, or between the director and us. Working with Aditya and Kapil sir made me feel liberated. There is no question that I can’t ask and no question that won’t be answered.”

Talking about how 2020 changed her perspective towards life, Sanjana says, “My perspective changed completely. Aditya, Kapil sir and I thank our stars for every second that we get to be on a set, this time feels so valuable. When we started stepping out for work, we were all so rusty. One didn’t know how to be around others because we hadn’t been around people for a long time. Now, while there is fear in our minds, there is also gratitude in our hearts for what we have today.”

Elaborating on how they prepped for their roles in a scenario where they couldn’t conduct workshops, Sanjana says, “We did spend time together, but in a socially distant manner. Adi and I had to train for the action portions as well. So, we would undergo Coronavirus tests every few days. Even on the set, we always followed the precautionary steps. I have realised that when you are careful, you can work around things.”

Thai action director Kecha Khamphakdee comes on board for OM: The Battle Within's climax scene

Makers of Aditya-starrer Om rope in international action director Khamphakdee to design set-piece for climax set in prison
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; February 13, 2021)

Aditya Roy Kapur, who has been giving shape to OM: The Battle Within since December, is set to film the climax. Well aware that preceding action sequences are merely the build-up to the climax, producer Ahmed Khan and director Kapil Verma have designed an elaborate set-piece for the final minutes of the movie. A huge set of a prison has been constructed at Film City in Goregaon for the ongoing seven-day schedule.

“The set is spread over a kilometre, as envisioned by Kapil. The producer-director duo don’t want to leave any stone unturned in making the sequence memorable and have roped in an international stunt director to design it,” reveals a source.

Khan, who has given Bollywood high-octane action thrillers in the second and third instalments of Baaghi, says he wanted to up the ante with his upcoming offering. “We have brought action director Kecha Khamphakdee from Thailand on board to design the stunts. He has previously worked with me on my directorial ventures. Action director Parvez Shaikh is supervising the stunts,” says the producer, adding that Kapur’s intense training in martial arts and assault weaponry paid off during the shoot.

It is heard that leading lady Sanjana Sanghi will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Kapur, taking on the baddies. Khan, who is backing the venture with Zee Studios, confirms, “Sanjana will be seen performing stunts.” With some songs remaining to be shot, the makers are planning to release the thriller in the second half of the year.

Aditya Roy Kapur trained in Kung fu for four months for Om-Kapil Verma

Shooting in bio-bubble in Mumbai, Om director-producer duo discuss how Aditya prepped for actioner during the pandemic
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; February 6, 2021)

With Malang (2020), Aditya Roy Kapur showed that he can pull off action as easily as he does romance. Now, the actor is upping the ante with producer Ahmed Khan’s actioner,  OM: The Battle Within. Kapil Verma, who has turned director with the Sanjana Sanghi-starrer, reveals that the leading man picked up martial arts before the film went on floors in December.

“Ahead of the shoot, we constructed a gym at Aditya’s home as all the gyms were shut at the time. He trained in Kung fu, Tai chi and handling assault weapon for four months. Ahmed had booked a dance rehearsal hall in Bandra where Aditya would train for more than two hours every day with his three instructors — two for different martial arts, and the third would help him with stretches and cardio,” says Verma. Their groundwork didn’t end there — the makers hired a chef to aid Kapur in achieving a ripped physique.

Over the past three months, it has been all work and no play for the unit as it shot a major chunk of the actioner. A massive set has been erected at Film City in Goregaon for the ongoing 15-day climax shoot. “Filming during the pandemic has been tough. We are shooting in a bio-bubble, with the unit being put up at a luxury hotel in Goregaon. We have two doctors and an ambulance on the set, and regular tests are conducted for the unit,” says Khan, who is backing Om with co-producer wife Shaira. He adds that a small schedule in Turkey is on the cards, after which it will be a wrap for the project.

Sanjana Sanghi to play Aditya Roy Kapur's leading lady in OM: The Battle Within

Actors pair up for the first time in an action thriller which will be shot across three cities in India, with a schedule abroad; film kicks off from December
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 23, 2020)

On November 16, his 35th birthday, Aditya Roy Kapur announced his next project, OM: The Battle Within, which marks the directorial debut of action director Tinu Verma’s son, Kapil. Now, he’s found his leading lady in Sanjana Sanghi who debuted this year as Kizie in Sushant Singh Rajput’s swan song, Dil Bechara. The Ahmed and Shaira Khan and Zee Studios production rolls early next month and is targeting a release in the second half of 2021.

Ahmed points out that Sanjana handled Kizie with great maturity and since her character in OM requires the same responsibility, she is perfectly suited for the part. The actress is thrilled to make the transition from drama to action so early on in her career. “I explored many scripts, but OM offered me the spectrum jump that I was looking for, giving me an entirely unchartered territory of a big commercial actioner,” she reasons.

Sanjana plays Kavya, who she describes as a confident, hardworking, sharp, empathetic and brave girl. “She’s someone every young Indian girl aspires to be, and a character one hasn’t seen before. I’m excited because I will get to do a lot of action for which various kinds of training and prep is currently on. It’s testing, both physically and mentally, but thrilling too,” she gushes, adding that getting to work with Aditya is “the best part”.

Sanjana’s debut film proved to be a professional success, but came with a huge personal loss. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wrap my head or heart around the loss and the circumstances amidst which our film reached the audience. However, the unfathomable love, appreciation and embrace of the audiences, made for the most befitting tribute to the legend that was Sushant and helped me cope with the tragedy. I’ve always believed that love is the strongest emotion in the world,” she asserts.

Ahmed informs that OM will be shot across three cities in India with a schedule abroad. “We are hoping to complete the entire shooting by March,” he says, maintaining that the way Tiger Shroff and he bring the best out of each other in action scenes, Kapil and Aditya will be able to achieve the same. “Tiger has aced the action space which is why we always succeed in achieving our best. Physically, Aditya is built for action and I’m sure Kapil will bring out the best of Aditya,” he reiterates.

Aditya Roy Kapur gets back into action with OM: The Battle Within from December

Aditya Roy Kapur in Malang
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 16, 2020)

Aditya Roy Kapur, who beefed up for the action scenes in Mohit Suri-directed Malang last year, is gearing up for more maar dhaad in Ahmed Khan, wife Shaira and Zee Studio production, OM: The Battle Within. The film marks the directorial debut of action director Tinu Verma’s son, Kapil. The entire film, including the script, locations and action scenes, have been conceptualised during the lockdown. The film will have lavishly mounted fights and Aditya has been learning different action forms and also building up an impressive physique.

“Last year, around this time, I was juggling between the shoots of Malang and Ludo. Both films got me a lot of appreciation. Covid notwithstanding, this year has been a special one on the work front. I have been living with OM since the last few months now, and I am looking forward to the journey,” says the actor who rings in his 35th birthday today.

The film puts him in an out-and-out commercial action space for the first time and Ahmed insists his ‘hero’ is physically built for action and the character fits him to the T. “The film revolves around emotionally disturbed relationships in the line of duty. Kapil Verma will jump into direction with some larger-than-life action scenes,” the maker promises.

Shariq Patel of Zee endorses that Aditya, despite his versatile choices, has proved his mettle as an action hero. “We are set to roll by early next month,” he informs. The film is gearing up for a release in the second half of 2021.”

Meanwhile, Ahmed is all charged up to take the Heropanti franchise forward as director with Tiger Shroff. The film also goes on the floors next month.
