When I first heard Chandu Champion, I couldn’t believe it was a true story-Kartik Aaryan

Kartik discusses how he transformed physically to depict different stages of Petkar’s life in Chandu Champion
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; April 12, 2024)
For the final episode of her chat show No Filter Neha, host Neha Dhupia was joined by Kartik Aaryan as a guest. The two talked about all things Chandu Champion. Kabir Khan’s directorial venture is based on Murlikant Petkar, who sustained grave injuries in the 1965 India-Pakistan War and rose against the odds to become India’s first Paralympic gold medalist. The actor revealed that he was in a state of disbelief when the project came his way.
“Chandu Champion is one of the toughest films that I have done because it has so many elements. Murlikant Petkar ji’s journey is unlike any other. When I first heard the film, I couldn’t believe it was a true story. He was not associated with one sport alone; there were different sports and different phases in his life. Also, he was an army officer. So, the log line of the film is a man who refuses to surrender,” said Aaryan.
From New York (2009) to 83 (2021), Khan is known for his eye for detail. It wasn’t any different for the biopic. The leading man says that he had to undergo physical transformation to step into Petkar’s shoes.
“We are showing him at 17 years old, 24 years old, and in later [years]. So, you’ll see a complete transformation in me throughout the film. My [fitness] routine was based on how the character had to look—he had to look childlike at one stage, mature in another. The shoot lasted a year, and I didn’t do anything else during that time.”
The worst thing about Vijay Deverakonda is that he is too serious all the time-Rashmika Mandanna

On Neha’s chat show, Rashmika says rumoured boyfriend Vijay and she bonded over their middle-class backgrounds
Mohar Basu (BOMBAY TIMES; April 6, 2024)
From eagle-eyed fans spotting common backdrops in their holiday pictures, to engagement speculation, Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda’s rumoured relationship constantly makes news. The two, however, remain tight-lipped about it. On the latest episode of Neha Dhupia’s chat show, No Filter Neha, Mandanna opened up about their equation. She said the two gravitated towards each other because of their similar backgrounds.
“We come from middle-class families, so our thinking and perspectives are alike. I love that because it’s real and easy. The worst thing about him is that he is too serious all the time. It’s just work and work for him,” she said.
That Mandanna counts Deverakonda among the people closest to her was evident in another segment of the JioTV show. When Dhupia asked her whom she considers her therapist, the actor joked that her Dear Comrade (2019) co-star is her all-time, unpaid therapist. She also revealed that her nickname for Deverakonda is Vijju.
When people say that they won’t watch a film because I’m in it, that makes me feel bad-Ananya Panday

On Neha’s chat show, Ananya says she alternates between being unaffected and deeply hurt by criticism
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; March 29, 2024)
With her latest season of No Filter Neha, host Neha Dhupia hopes to bring stars’ authentic and vulnerable side to the fore. Ananya Panday features in the upcoming episode of the JioTV offering. The actor may have initially battled criticism and social media hate, but she has slowly come into her own, giving mature performances in Gehraiyaan (2022) and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023).
In the episode, Panday reflected on how she dealt with criticism, saying, “If [the critics] are giving constructive feedback, then I don’t think it’s anything to bother with. On some days, the nastiest of things [said by trolls] wouldn’t bother me because I was having a fine day and feeling confident. [But] when I’m having a bad day, then [even a remark] about my hair being greasy will freak me out. When people say that they won’t watch a film because I’m in it, that makes me feel bad, not for myself, but for the hundreds of other people who have worked on the film.”
The first few years weren’t a smooth ride for Panday as she was scrutinized for her choice of films. When Dhupia asked her about her first few movies, she said they shaped her as an artiste. “I don’t think I would be the actor I am, if not for the lows. Ups and downs make you.”
It’s very hard to cast women in their 40s. We don’t want to play mums to old kids-Neha Dhupia

Noting that 40-something female actors can’t play young parts or mother to older kids, Neha glad to find that sweet spot with her international debut film, Blue 52
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; March 11, 2024)
The roles of a chat show host and producer come easy to Neha Dhupia, but she asserts that she will always be an actor first. Naturally then, she is delighted to showcase her acting on an international stage with Blue 52. Egyptian director Ali El Arabi’s film revolves around a 22-year-old boy Ashish, who, raised in Kerala by a controlling father and a loving mother, escapes to Qatar with the hope of meeting his idol Lionel Messi at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
“After all these years, I managed to get an international film. Maybe the time is right for me now,” smiles Dhupia, excited about her international debut. Adil Hussain and she play the protagonist’s parents in the drama that was shot in Kochi and Qatar.
“I felt so liberated every day on that set. My look was different; it was exactly how I wanted to be cast for a long time. It didn’t happen in India for me. I’m hoping more filmmakers see the movie and think of me in different roles. Adil is such a wonderful actor and a great teacher. You feel cocooned in his company.”
Blue 52 gave her not only a rich experience, but also an age-appropriate, meaty role. The actor reflects that in India, female artistes in their 40s are hardly seen in diverse parts. “I’ll be honest. It’s very hard to cast women in their 40s. We don’t want to play mums to old kids, and we aren’t getting cast as young women. I’m offered acting jobs, but the ones I want to do are few and far between.”
Dhupia juggles her acting commitments with her production, No Filter Neha. She has taken the chat series’ latest season from a podcast to a video show. What does she say to the same celebrity guests over and over again after six seasons?
“You never run out of conversations. For instance, Vicky [Kaushal] wasn’t married when he came the first time, and now, he has a wife. This time around, one of the most pleasant things I heard was from Ananya Panday. She spoke about learning from Deepika Padukone on Gehraiyaan [2022]. She learnt how sometimes if your hair or dialogue delivery is not right, [one must] ask for a second take. I had never asked for what’s mine on set. But Ananya [noted that] as long as no one is being inconvenienced, it’s okay to ask. It’s a part of giving your 100 per cent.”
Neena Gupta’s advice to her younger self in retrospect: ‘Focus more on work & not on men’

Neena Gupta’s advice to her younger self in retrospect
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 8, 2020)
Ever since the release of Junglee Pictures’ Badhaai Ho in 2018, Neena Gupta has made a triumphant return to show business. She is now being flooded with interesting roles, like that of Arjun Kapoor’s grandmother in a yet-untitled cross border love story in which she is separated from the man she loves, John Abraham, because of the Partition. Recently, she appeared on Neha Dhupia’s chat show No Filter Neha and when asked what advice she would give to her younger self today, the veteran actress shot back, saying, “If you want to get more and better roles, become a star, then modesty is not the best policy. You cannot be shy, you have to go out, call up people, which I never did, and focus more on work and not on men.”
Having been a part of the industry for around 38 years, and coming from a time of minimal publicity, Neena finds the current scenario exasperating. “They keep 10 people for one task. Sometimes they don’t know much about the field, but still try to teach me acting, giving me suggestions on how to do a scene. Kyun bhai? Mujhe kyun le rahe ho?” she vents on No Filter Neha.
At 61, the actress’s Insta game is strong, but, she admits, daughter Masaba does the policing if she errs. “I immediately get a message from her saying, ‘Mom, you’ve done it wrong’, and I set it right,” she admits candidly.

Harmless banter on shows has been widely dissected, but that can't be reason to change our format-Neha Dhupia

Amid the outpouring of hate against Koffee With Karan, Neha Dhupia on launching the latest season of podcast with similar treatment
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; August 26, 2020)
Neha Dhupia, who is gearing up to launch the fifth season of her celebrity podcast series No Filter Neha, says it will stand out from previous editions. "We are recording on Zoom, with 20 people working on the back-end. A face-to-face conversation is more intimate, but we have to adapt," says the actor-host, who will open the series with Saif Ali Khan.
A breezy show that has stars spilling the beans on their professional and personal lives, No Filter Neha shares similarities with Koffee With Karan in terms of theme and treatment. With Karan Johar's chat show being slammed amid the ongoing insider-versus-outsider debate, Dhupia believes her podcast has always employed an empathetic gaze. "Harmless banter on shows has been widely dissected, but that can't be the reason to change our format. In this season, the conversations will revolve around celebrities making sense of the new world we are living in and will focus on their time with family."
Recently, the actor was trolled on social media after Suchitra Krishnamoorthi alleged that she got a talk show because of her "chamchagiri" to Johar. Dhupia, who responded to her claims with a strongly worded post, reflects, "[It's strange that] people who don't know me have an opinion on my life! [Ideally] they shouldn't get away with sitting in front of a laptop and taking jabs at others. Or one must not pay heed and move on."
Rohit Shetty reveals that Katrina Kaif is playing a doctor in Sooryavanshi

MUMBAI MIRROR (December 31, 2019)
Rohit Shetty, on a recent turn on No Filter Neha, revealed that Katrina Kaif plays a doctor to Akshay Kumar’s cop in his next, Sooryavanshi. Rohit also likened his leading lady with a quiz master, saying, “She asks a lot of questions...Is this okay, is this right?’’ I tell her that she’s beautiful, but after a point, I just switch off.”
The filmmaker’s candour extended to his filmography, when he shared that he sets the bar high in terms of box-office collections. “People say that I make commercial films and that I’m a money-spinner but ever since I turned producer, I’ve realised that I’d have incurred huge losses if my films hadn’t crossed the Rs 150 crore mark,” he explained.
His sole concern while making a film is the audience. “From the first day of scripting to the night before the film’s release, my team knows that I can change anything, so they are always on their toes,” Rohit said.
Ishaan Khatter has the dreamiest eyes-Janhvi Kapoor

MUMBAI MIRROR (December 24, 2019)
During her recent turn on No Filter Neha, Janhvi Kapoor confessed that she was “stalker-ish obsessive” about her Roohi Afza co-star, Rajkummar Rao, even professing her love for him on the social media once as he wouldn’t take her calls or answer her messages. She went on to admit that the actor only said, “Thank you so much for your kind words” when quizzed about it during an interview. The actress had kind words for Ishaan Khatter, with whom she made her debut in Dhadak. “He has the purest of intentions and the purest heart, and he has the dreamiest eyes,” she raved, adding, “We’re better as friends; we fight a lot.” She went on to share that she wants to gift him better caps. “He has this grey hat... I stole it and hid it in my house,” Janhvi chuckled.Talking about her debut, she thanked Sara Ali Khan for not giving a nod to the film. “Things panned out well for her with the decisions she made and for me with the decisions she made and the decisions I made so...” she smiled. And when the host asked her if she viewed Sara as competition, Janhvi reasoned, “I get motivated when I see her. There’s so much to learn from her, Ananya (Panday) and Tara (Sutaria). I think that we will all make our place in this industry.”
More than my husband, I can be manipulated by Adira-Rani Mukerji

Feisty cop on-screen and mushy mom off it, Mardaani 2 actor Rani Mukerji opens up on two pillars of her life - husband Aditya and her daughter Adira
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; December 17, 2019)
She may play a tough-as-nails cop in Mardaani 2, but mention daughter Adira and Rani Mukerji turns mushy. "I understood what true love is when I had Adira," beams the actor at the recording of Neha Dhupia's podcast, No Filter Neha. "It would matter to me if my husband [Aditya Chopra] didn't reciprocate my love, but it doesn't matter if Adira loves me or not. My affection for her is unconditional." It is evident that the little one has Mukerji wrapped around her little finger as she laughs, "More than my husband, I can be manipulated by Adira."
The actor had traded the arc lights for mommy duties after her daughter's birth in 2015. She ended her three-year sabbatical with Hichki (2018), following it up with the cop drama this year. She credits her filmmaker husband for her return to the big screen. "He told me that I should not let go of my individuality. He pushed me to read scripts; that is how Hichki happened. Women need supportive husbands at that point [post pregnancy] because it is in our nature to sacrifice."
Chopra's reclusive nature is legendary in Bollywood circles. In an industry where out of sight is out of mind, the fiercely private filmmaker has stayed away from public glare, content to run the show from behind closed doors. Mukerji gives a peek into the man behind the mystery as she reveals that he is punctual to a fault. "No matter where he has to go, he will reach there ahead of the [designated] time. When we go to watch a film, he will reach the theatre 20 minutes before the show so that he can watch the trailer of every upcoming movie." She attributes his success in Bollywood to his ability for recognising talent. "He has the knack for spotting not only talented actors, but also writers and directors. I guess he inherited it from Yash [Chopra] uncle."
No Filter Neha: Jacqueline Fernandez says she originally wanted to be a nun before she ‘discovered boys’

MUMBAI MIRROR (December 3, 2019)
On Neha Dhupia’s chat show, No Filter Neha, Jacqueline Fernandez spoke about her early struggles in B-town.
Next year, the 34-year-old actress has the Sajid Nadiadwala-directed sequel to Kick coming up, opposite Salman Khan, and reeling back to the original, she confided that just before the film came her way, she had told herself that she was done with struggling and asking for work. That’s when the biggest film of her career landed in her lap. “That’s the thing, this industry, it can literally make you feel you’re the worst, that you’re the most worthless, and then, all of a sudden, something happens,” she said.
Admitting that the films she had begged and lobbied for didn’t come her way, Jackie shared that she is bad at asking for things and marketing herself. But she admitted hearing that the biggest actresses visited the sets and offices of actors and directors and sat for hours. Some she has seen herself, while walking out of film studios waiting for the director to step out. “Then, they would go running after them, saying, ‘Please sir I wanna work with you,’” she flashbacked, saying these were the ones who actually got cast. Of late, she admits, she has become a more upfront and even sent a “I really really wanna work with you” message to a director, asking for a role. “And she’s like, listen, first of all you dumbo, you do not have to be ashamed to ask for work. I’ve had top actresses send me show reels. They’ve gone and done photoshoots of themselves in costumes after just having an idea of what the character might be. And these are girls who are at the top of their game,” she recounted.
Jackie candidly said that she didn’t get the film, but learnt that if you want something, you have to go out and get it.
----------------------------

Jackie met Kangana Ranaut at PM Narendra Modi’s event and describes the other actress as “amazing” and someone she looks up to. “I need Kangana’s guts! I’ll give Kangana my dancing skills.”
She also wants Taapsee Pannu’s “speaking skills”, since she can converse fluently in Hindi, Punjabi and other languages. “I’m gonna give her my stylist,” she promises.

On a podcast episode that drops today, Jacqueline says she originally wanted to be a nun before she ‘discovered boys’
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; December 3, 2019)
Given her love for dance, acting, and all things fashionable, Jacqueline Fernandez could easily seem deceptive when stating that she once harboured the desire to be a nun. “I went to a convent school that was run by nuns. As a kid, you follow an example and get influenced. I was influenced by them. We were in school, and in church every day. I was in the choir too. There was a lot of gospel stuff [that we sang]. It seemed like [I had no] other way to go,” the actor said in an episode of Neha Dhupia’s podcast, which airs today.
Prod her on the events that led to a change of heart, and she says, “I started discovering boys.” I started having crushes, and eventually knew that the nun thing would not work out.”
In a no-holds-barred approach, Fernandez even dug up old wounds to retrace the time when she felt her Bollywood career was failing. “In the beginning, I found success very fast. I got a couple of modelling jobs here. I was immediately cast in Aladin. [Then] there were bad days, where I had nobody to turn to and no idea what I was doing on a set. I got yelled at by people a lot, because I messed up often. Then, films didn’t do well. I had a lull for a year. [I began to wonder] what had I done [wrong], or [if this was the] right career move.”
Siddhant Chaturvedi wants Emma Watson as his Oscar date

MUMBAI MIRROR (November 12, 2019)
Siddhant Chaturvedi shot to fame with his role as MC Sher in Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s Gully Boy. But on his recent turn on No Filter Neha, the actor revealed that he had turned down the role and didn’t even audition for it. “I wanted to start with a lead role and Bollywood had enough examples to scare me into believing that the hero’s friend gets typecast. I thought it wasn’t an important character initially,” he admitted sheepishly. Siddhant is glad that he eventually took it up as his performance got him noticed. “After the trailer launch, my parents called me to inform that a journalist had called to ask about me. They were very proud,” he smiled.
Now that his debut film has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category, the actor is looking forward to make an appearance on the red carpet in Los Angeles. Does he have a date in mind for the evening? Pat comes the answer, “Emma Watson.” Great expectations indeed for the Sher.

Arjun Kapoor thinks I do a crappy job of taking his pictures-Malaika Arora

Despite being mum about whether or not Arjun Kapoor will feature in it, Malaika Arora opens up on her dream marriage plans
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; November 5, 2019)
Unusually tight-lipped about her relationship with Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora let her guards down during an interaction with Neha Dhupia on the latter's chat show, No Filter Neha. even though the actor- model did not reveal details of her rumoured upcoming nuptials with the Panipat actor, she did discuss what according to her was her ideal wedding plan
Arora revealed that she would prefer a beach wedding that has her walk down the aisle in an Elie Saab gown. "I'm all about a white wedding, [and have] always liked the [concept] of bridesmaids. They would be my closest girl [friends]. my girl gang," Arora said, adding that her best woman would be "my closest friend, Vahbiz Mehta."
Even though they frequent one another's Instagram posts, Arora revealed that Kapoor isn't particularly fond of her photography skills. "He thinks I do a crappy job of taking his pictures. He clicks better pictures of me, so, the pictures I take fail in comparison," said Arora who has seen each movie featuring the actor. Kapoor, she says, "is perfect," but isn't the best at handling his money.
The best way to appease Arora is by becoming an "animal person". "[I like someone who is] a dog person, or a cat person. [Pets] become family. For me, [my dog] Casper is [part of the family]. in fact, my son says that [I] love [Casper] more than I love him. He asks, 'mamma, do you love Casper or me?' I say, I have two boys and I love you both equally. He says, 'mom, can you not be diplomatic; choose me and say: You're my number 1.' I'm like, I can't say that. Arhaan is everything, but Casper is also my everything."
Heaping praise on Dhupia for shattering the set notions of beauty, Arora added, "You send out a body-positive message. You have dealt with your ups and downs, with your weight. But, you have never let it hinder you."

Mommy-to-be Neha Dhupia records latest episode of podcast with husband Angad Bedi before going on maternity break
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; November 13, 2018)
"I am due now any minute now," laughs Neha Dhupia, looking radiant in her pregnancy glow. The impending arrival of the little one hasn't deterred her from honouring her commitment to #NoFilterNeha. In a classic case of mixing work and pleasure, Dhupia recorded the latest episode of her podcast with husband Angad Bedi, who made his first appearance on the show. She says the timing couldn't be better as the parents-to-be spoke about finding love in each other, marriage and looking forward to the next chapter in their lives.
"When I asked him to come on the show as a guest, Angad asked me, 'Are you sure? My replies may land you in trouble.' The shoot was fun as we kept on flirting on air. I am hoping nobody will get upset because, at the end of the day, he is my husband. While some of his replies made me blush, others left me cringing. Thank God, I am the producer! That way, I can edit the stuff where the flirting got out of hand," she quips.
Asserting that she gave no concessions to hubby dearest and asked him tough questions, Dhupia adds that Bedi sportingly opened up about his past. "When I mentioned certain anecdotes, Angad was like, 'How do you know this?' There are certain things that you don't want your wife to know, but I went behind his back and got the information from his friends. I didn't ask him about his exes, but we had a chat about all the crazy times that he's had. The biggest reveal on the show is how we broke the news of our pregnancy to our parents." Ask her about her maternity break, and Dhupia says, "As of now, I don't intend to take a long break, but that may change once the baby's here."
I and Angad would love to see our child in the Olympics squad-Neha Dhupia

Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; October 22, 2018)
Neha Dhupia is only weeks away from giving birth to her first baby, but there is no slowing down the feisty actress. She is busy shooting for her podcast #NoFilterNeha, and her TV show, Styled By Neha. After keeping her pregnancy hidden for six months, the actress is now showing off her baby bump walking the ramp, no less, and at various events. We caught up with the mommy-to-be to talk about her pregnancy, shows and more...
In the last trimester of your pregnancy, you seem to be more active than before...
Yes, I got the best advice from my mother when I told her I was pregnant. She said, ‘You are not sick, you are fit enough to give life. So don’t say I am not well and sit at home.’ I don’t want to be misquoted here, but there are women who prefer to stay at home during their pregnancy, which is good. There are women who decide to go to work every day when they are expecting and that’s also great. I fall in the latter category and I feel wonderful thinking today I’ll go on the sets of my style show, or that I will be doing my podcast or I will be researching. Yes, there are days when I feel bloated and think I can’t do things. Suddenly, in the middle of an interview, I think of food — such silly things happen, but I have got so much support from Angad (Bedi, actor-husband). If I am at home doing nothing, he asks whether I am okay. People worry when I don’t go to work (laughs).
Have you picked up any names for your baby?
No, we are not doing anything. We are not reading up — you won’t find a single parenting book at home. We are not going to any (pre-natal) classes, we are taking each day as it comes.
Every pregnant woman is asked if she wants a boy or girl. What is your wish?
I have seen polls being conducted on social media on whether I will have a boy or girl — 64 per cent, 36 per cent, 40 per cent — and it’s funny. Angad and I jokingly ask each other ‘what do you want?’
And Angad says he wants a gold medallist.
Angad and I are so inclined towards sports that we would love to see our child eventually represent the country in the Olympics squad. I always wanted to wear an India T-shirt and bring glory to the country but that dream remained unfulfilled. We are hoping our child is fit, healthy and disciplined to do that. Most importantly, I want a healthy and a happy kid, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a boy or a girl.
The third season of #NoFilterNeha is back. Will it be spicier than before?
Yes, for one thing, Karan (Johar) is back and you’ll be hearing a lot of things. Another highlight will be Angad and me in conversation. Apart from Karan, who himself is a great host and star, Angad made me nervous. I didn’t know where the wife began and the host ended and vice versa. There are a lot of revelations, Vicky Kaushal was amazing, Harbhajan (Singh) was at his wittiest, funniest best, Badshah opened up about his depression, Radhika Apte touched on the #MeToo Movement. Karan talked about how he guided us on making sure that our most important moments in Lust Stories were absolutely right if you know what I mean (laughs).
Did you make it easy for Angad?
No, it was the opposite. We do a lot of research to get the best out of a person. So, I called up all his friends to talk about his past and assured them it’s okay to tell me. But when I started hearing the stories, I was like, ‘No, stop!’
Since you talked about #MeToo Movement what is your take on it?
It needs a lot of strength to talk about it and there are really brave women out there. There are some bizarre stories too, and there are two sides to it. My heart goes out to not only the women who have suffered, but also to the accuser’s wife and daughter — what they must be going through or the son who has looked up to him all his life.
How did Styled By Neha come about?
Why? Are you surprised? (Smiles)
You are not known to be a fashionista, so it’s interesting...
Yes, my fashion sense has evolved. Initially, I used to try and ape others, especially successful people. If someone wore a gold sari to an awards show, I would drape one for the next event. I was a complete idiot when it came to fashion. Now, I dress for myself. People who have an opinion about it are entitled to it. I don’t put too much thought into it. I wear what makes me comfortable and that makes me confident. Earlier, people wouldn’t understand and used to joke that she dresses in drapes and bedsheets. But hey, I love my drapes! It was the channel which came to me with the idea of the fashion makeover show and it interested me.
What next?
Apart from my shows, the next big thing is my baby who is due next month. I have worked through my pregnancy in all shapes and sizes (laughs). When I was two months pregnant, I did Roadies, living in tents and off-roading. It doesn’t get better or worse than that. I shot for Helicopter Eela, my style show and now, I’m shooting for my podcast. In your head you have to be unstoppable then nothing can stop you.
I welcomed getting older with open arms-Neha Dhupia

Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; February 1, 2018)
She is one actress who has mastered the art of reinvention. She may be getting older, but she has found a way to not only stay connected with the masses through cinema but has also become relevant to the youth, thanks to her TV outings. We are talking about Neha Dhupia who made her debut as a glamorous heroine in 2003 with Qayamat and soon got tagged as a sex siren with Julie. But she managed to shed the image by playing significant parts in small-budget films like Mithya, Phas Gaye Re Obama and Moh Money Maya. Today, she has impressed everyone with her acting prowess in content-driven movies such as Tumhari Sulu and Qarib Qarib Singlle. In a freewheeling interview, Neha talks about embracing age, playing good roles and keeping up with the times.
You grabbed attention 15 years ago with your bold roles and now have emerged as the go-to actress for strong supporting roles. How did the metamorphosis come about?
I welcomed getting older with open arms. I didn’t shy away from it. I kind of have goosebumps saying this because I have never said this before, but even I wonder what happened. I’m not being immodest but am saying this with a lot of gratitude. When I came into the industry, a lot of people said, ‘You’ll be done in four-five years, what will you do after that’? I was working towards being an IAS officer, I was raised believing I would serve the country. Then, I got into movies and I kind of started believing people around me, that my stint would only last for five years. Then I thought to myself, we can change that. Times are changing as people are looking at good content. Everything doesn’t have to be about others’ idea of what it is supposed to be. Everyone is doing so many different things, looking at different role models. My role model is Karan (Johar), he does everything including making films! He is the cultural export, the first face of Indian cinema. He is seen everywhere from award shows to world economic forums.
What really changed was the way I look, the skills that I have, and me getting older in the business. The one thing it taught me is to hustle every day. My biggest strength is I’m not a lazy person. My mind ticks like a time bomb. It’s a combination of getting older, being a little restless, understanding what the audience wants and knowing where you stand. People are not coming to me with lead roles, but good parts. It will be stupid if I think, it’s not the lead, why should I do it? I’m not that person. My decisions are based on instinct.
After films like Qayamat, Julie, etc there was a phase when you did small-budget cinema with the likes of Rajat Kapoor and Ranvir Shorey. What changed for you?
Everything, personal or professional, is like a pack of biscuits that comes with an expiry date. I emerged in a bikini from the water when I started off in Qayamat. I did Julie, in which I had an author-backed role. But what happened with that was it gave me a certain image. Now, either I am happy that I have an image — sometimes it takes a lifetime — you do interesting work but you don’t have an image. I had one and I was playing on that. But then I realised this image is going too far, I needed to change that. So, I took two steps back. I did not take up any work. One day, I met Rajat Kapoor in the gym. He said, ‘I have been looking for you for almost a year now, where were you?’ It was a random run-in and he told me, ‘I will call you in two months once my script is ready’. In April 2006, he met me and gave me the script of Mithya. He said he wanted me to play the part of Sonam. That was it, and I ended up doing five-six films with all of them — movies like Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local, Raat Gayi Baat Gayi, Phas Gaye Re Obama up to Moh Maya Money. I thought Moh Maya Money was a great film, but it didn’t work at the box office. That’s when I realised it’s time to reinvent myself. I thought I’m older so I need to crack the youth market.
Is that how Roadies happened?
Yes. I got this show and I decided to take it up as the youth are the most discerning audience. To win them over — I knew I won’t be doing Student Of The Year anytime in my life — so Roadies was a great way to get into the youth audience. After that I opened my production house with NoFilterNeha and did two seasons which led to BFFs with Vogue.
What is exciting about hosting BFFs with Vogue?
I always consider myself a rank outsider, I am not from the business, so for someone like me just to wake up and do work that I love is the most exciting thing. I like being in conversation — it’s like asking a cricketer to do cricket commentary. Listening to people and hearing their stories is something that I genuinely enjoy. It comes organically, it is not forced. The other exciting part are the guests. I know most of them like Karan and Shweta (Bachchan) Nanda and while talking to them at one point, I forgot the camera. I just sat on the lounge and chilled with them. But there are some celebrities like Juhi Chawla, Radhika Apte and Rani Mukerji, who I have been a fan of, but hadn’t met, and it was great interacting with them. Also, I don’t see many women, especially of my age, hosting a talk show. Usually the talk show hosts are much older and a little bit of overachievers which is a pre-requisite. I don’t fit into that category. So for me to be able to host such a show is flattering.
Will you be working on the third season of #NoFilterNeha?
I don’t know yet, but I am hoping for it. I remember I was in a coffee shop and talking to my writer about doing something interesting. I have so many live sessions with friends from the industry discussing all the madness we went through. I thought this needs to be out in the open. I met Rishi Malhotra (he owns a digital streaming service) who said that I have a good sense of humour, which people don’t know about, and I need to have my own talk show. That’s how NoFilterNeha came about.
Was it easier for you to get celebrities on your show?
It’s never easy to get celebs. But I must say the first one was easier than the second. After the first season, celebrities who had seen it were like, ‘Hope we are not invited as there are tricky questions’. But trust me they are all brighter than me. They know how to swerve around them. Season 2 was more interesting as we used a different way of doing it and were fortunate enough to not repeat the guests. Everyone who was on my wishlist on season 1 and season 2 has appeared. If I have a third season, I definitely want Shah Rukh Khan to come because I want to have a conversation with that man on record.
Talking about Shah Rukh Khan, you once made a statement, ‘Only SRK or sex sells in cinema’. Would you say the same now?
I think a lot of things are changing, but that still doesn’t take away from the fact that SRK and sex sell!

In the latest episode of Neha Dhupia’s Podcast, Parineeti Chopra talks about how she and tennis champion Sania Mirza became friends. What happened was, in an interview Sania said, “I would like Parineeti to play me in my biopic.” Pari says at that time Sania was playing the US Open and she called her from there in the middle of the night. “She said, ‘Hi this is Sania Mirza. I just want to say that I have given an interview yesterday and it’s all over the country on front pages. I felt it was my responsibility to tell you, why it all happened’. I told her that’s really sweet of her to say that. She said, ‘You look like me and you know we all are blessed in the chest area and I think you will look most like me’. I said ‘thanks buddy’ and we have been friends ever since.” She added that Pari is the only actor Sania is friends with.

She may not have met success on screen, but her podcast is raising eyebrows, and hooking the famous
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; November 17, 2016)
When it comes to candid confessions and catty comments, no other chat show gets B-Town A-listers in a twist like Karan Johar’s Koffee With Karan. But, K Jo may have found his match in Neha Dhupia, whose audio chat programme, #NoFilterNeha, which airs on a music streaming service, bags top names for a no-holds-barred conversation. To her credit, she hasn’t worked with any of the A-listers she has managed to speak to. “When I drew up a list of guests, fortunately, they all said, yes. I did not need a Plan B,” says Neha. Arjun Kapoor, for instance, was in the city for 10 hours on recording day. “He had his share of fittings, rehearsals, a hair cut... Everyone thought he wouldn’t turn up, but he did.”
Her latest guest, Kareena Kapoor Khan, revealed how husband Saif Ali Khan is old school and would possibly choose a ‘historical’ name for their baby. Earlier, Karan Johar confessed that he goes shopping immediately after having sex. “I am not grilling them, it’s a normal chat. [In person too], I prefer speaking straight. I wanted the show to be just that,” Neha shares.
The reactions have taken her by surprise, though, since she didn’t expect to see as much traction “ and, if I may add, do so well.” The other first with #NoFilterNeha is her role as producer. “As a first-time producer, I make sure there are no dull questions or information that you can easily Google. I love seeing them shriek, ‘Hey, how do you know that?’ None of them has, so far, refused to answer a question.” In the next season, she plans to introduce a behind-the-scenes segment.

Neha Dhupia is set to become one of B-Town's first celebrities to have a podcast of her own. Titled No Filter Neha, the show will air once a week starting October on the music streaming app, Saavn, and will feature guests like Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, and Yuvraj Singh, among others.
"You can be a bit more risque with podcasts. Such shows are big internationally. We're hoping the Indian market will open up to the idea too," Neha told Mirror.
Incidentally, the show kicks off with KJo and Neha was understandably nervous during the recording. "I'm a big fan of Koffee with Karan. I didn't want to have a goof-up in his presence. Although, he's a friend but the idea of interviewing him is a big deal," Neha gushes, adding that she was equally fascinated with Sonam's candour. "She spoke about the women her brother, Harshvardhan, brings home. I don't know Kangana personally but when I called her she agreed to make an appearance, which was wonderful. Another time, Arjun had just returned from an international schedule for Half Girlfriend and had another flight to catch in the next few hours. We recorded his episode as he prepared to leave," she concluded.
