I’m getting abusive messages from men over my role in Mrs-Nishant Dahiya

Sanya Malhotra-starrer Mrs has been a topic of discussion on social media over its depiction of casual sexism. But what surprised actor Nishant Dahiya, who portrays Sanya’s husband Diwakar, is the negative response he received.
“I’ve got a lot of love-hate! I got lovely messages from women who said they hate the character but appreciate my work,” he shares, adding, “But I’m getting abusive messages from men: ‘You dumb***k actor, go and eat rat poison!’ or ‘Die somewhere, you mother****er!’”
Nishant feels that this shows how it “touched a nerve”: “95% men are like Diwakar. Many are not yet aware of what they do. That’s the biggest problem.”
The film was panned by a section of social media for promoting ‘toxic feminism’, and he adds, “Our film is not limited to a woman saying, ‘I don’t want to do household work’. It’s about respecting your partner and her choices. When someone says this film is destroying the sanctity of marriage, I wonder why, because it was never about that.”

Actor Sanya Malhotra dialled up the fun factor to full as she answered fan questions and shook a leg at a recent Stars In The City session

“When I read the script of Mrs, I could see myself in it,” said actor Sanya Malhotra, during a recent edition of HT City’s Stars In The City.
As she gears up for the upcoming release of Mrs on Zee5, the actor opened up about what drew her to the films and its themes of gender equality and patriarchy. In a candid conversation with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor, Entertainment and Lifestyle, Hindustan Times, Sanya explained, “I haven’t faced the same challenges as my character Richa, but I have seen her in my mother, my sister, and in women around me. I’m hoping after watching it, people will realise that some things need to change.”
‘FEMINISM IS FOR EVERYONE’
Would the film’s message then be unfair to men who are supportive of the women in their lives? Sanya asserted, “People keep forgetting that feminism includes both men and women. Patriarchy also puts a lot of pressure on men. When we were prepping for Mrs, my co-actor Nishant Dahiya was empathizing with his character Diwakar (Richa’s husband in the film) — that irritated me. But I realized we are all products of our conditioning and patriarchy. I could understand aadmiyon pe kitna pressure hota hai; uss chakkar mein apne emotions bhi baahar nahin la sakte.”
THE MAGIC OF AANKH!
On a lighter note, how could we not ask the actor about her recent song Aankh with singer Sunidhi Chauhan?
As the audience cheered at the mention of the viral track, Sanya replied, “I am very keen on pursuing this glamorous side along with acting. As an actor, I like doing character-driven movies like Mrs, Pagglait (2021) and Kathal (2023). But bachpan se toh maine yahi dekha hai, actors ko dance karte huye, woh bhi bada pasand hai.”
The actor, who is a trained dancer, added, “For this song, I practised a lot for two weeks. I have never looked like this on screen, so it was a big step for me. The song was incredible, and the choreography was insane!”
Taking the energy up a notch, Sanya also shook a leg with fans and participated in a hook step challenge, busting out some flawless moves as she danced to chartbusters such as Chikni Chameli (Agneepath, 2011) and What is Mobile Number (Haseena Maan Jayegi, 1999).
‘NO TIME TO GET MARRIED’
As the actor talked about drawing inspiration for her character from women around her, we asked, what about becoming a ‘Mrs’ in real life? However, Sanya, who has been rumoured to be dating sitarist Rishabh Sharma, played it coy: “Nahin, I don’t have the time. Yahaan chhutti lene ka time nahin hai!”
On the work front, some of Sanya’s films, Ludo (2020), Love Hostel (2022) and now Mrs, have headed straight to OTT. She shared: “My films have done really well on OTT, so there is no concern whatsoever.”

Newest addition to 83 cast, Nishant Dahiya on working with Ranveer Singh, and aping the tough mannerisms of Roger Binny

In a previous interview with this reporter, Balvinder Singh Sandhu had heaped praise on Nishant Dahiya - the newest addition to Ranveer Singh's world cup drama, '83 - alluding that among a lot of actors who couldn't replicate the mannerisms of Roger Binny, Dahiya was a saviour."He did it in 15 days. I was so proud of him," Sandhu had said. As far as Dahiya is concerned, he knew the ace cricketer, currently coaching the actors for Kabir Khan's film, was impressed from the word go. "I bowled the first ball, and Ballu sir said, 'Great, you're on board'," he recalls. But, mimicking fast bowler Binny, he realised after hopping aboard the project, was no mean feat.
"I had seen his interviews, but had never seen him bowl. When I watched his clips, I knew learning this would take time. His is an odd action; one that, perhaps, came naturally to him only. When a bowler lands, his back-foot lands at 90 degrees. In Roger sir's case, it lands in the opposite direction to where you face. It was Kapil sir [Dev] who told me that his manner was different because he was a javelin thrower when he was a kid. So, his postures was different." Yet, there were umpteen factors that the former junior national-level cricket player believes, made him earn brownie points before Sandhu. "Like Roger sir, I was a fast bowler, and a swing bowler. I think he liked my pace and rhythm. He knew it was something we could work on if I had to play this character."
Among a group of artistes who have a background in cricket, leading man Ranveer Singh is perhaps the only cast member who had not played the sport, actively. Yet, Dahiya isn't willing to buy his naivety. "By the time I met him, I was bowled over by his bowling. I could see Kapil sir was impressed too. I told him he was killing it. Ranveer is as much a motivator as he is an entertainer for the team. I think he's surpassed himself."
With their five-day week practice sessions being whittled down to three days, Dahiya says the cast members are now focusing on understanding the nuances of their individual characters. A recently-concluded bonding session in Dharamshala has enabled them to emerge as a team from an assorted bunch of actors. "We met seniors like Kapil, Mohinder Amarnath, Yashpal Sharma, Madan Lal. We got to ask them questions, and many stories emerged from those conversations; funny ones too. As an actor, one picks up these instances [to understand] the relationship they shared, based on their jokes and conversations. You learn how complicated they were, or their pairing. So, after practice [the actors would] head to a tea stall and discuss these events. We'd play with our characters, and call each other by the roles we were playing. Today, that's how we address one another. The camp helped us a lot."
