Seeing Nick Jonas manage T1 diabetes taught me it’s not a limitation-Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra Jonas on how her husband Nick Jonas has lived with this condition for almost two decades
Priyanka Chopra Jonas (THE TIMES OF INDIA; December 10, 2025)
More than two thousand years ago, Indian physicians described a condition that made urine “sweet like honey”. In the Sushruta Samhita, it was called ‘Madhumeha’ — what we now know as diabetes.
The language is ancient, but the reality India is facing today is urgent. There is a lot of misinformation about diabetes. It starts with stereotypes — that it affects someone older, someone inactive, or someone responsible for their illness. These stereotypes are not just unfair but dangerous. They delay diagnosis, silence families and fuel stigma.
I learned this not from medical journals, but from my own home. My introduction to Type 1 Diabetes came through my husband Nick. He was diagnosed at 13 and has lived with this condition for almost two decades now. When we first met, I was struck by how intuitive he was about his own body. He could wake up from deep sleep because he could sense his blood sugar dipping or from the effects of an unexpected or frustrating high glucose. He would go from a concert stage to a glucose check, with the same calmness and precision.
Watching him manage T1D while building a global music career, touring the world, acting, writing, starting companies, all this while caring for himself, opened my eyes. By his thoughts and actions, he showed me what is possible. He taught me that T1D is not a limitation. It’s a responsibility.
This spurred me on to join Nick in Beyond Type 1, the non-profit he co-founded. And I have learned about extraordinary stories of young people.
I think of Geethanjali. At 18, she was married instead of being allowed to attend college. Six months later, she fell gravely ill. She was finally diagnosed with T1D, a condition she had never heard of. Terrified of injections and struggling to afford insulin, she began skipping doses. One day, overwhelmed, she asked her doctor when she would die.
He reassured her that with proper care, she could live a long life. He then offered her a job. It allowed her to earn, learn and regain control. Over the years, she raised two daughters, became a pharmacist and a counsellor, and used her experience to support others.
And then there is Mehrin, diagnosed with T1D at 11 and told to slow down. She refused. Mehrin became a karate champion, training hard and pushing her limits with astonishing spirit. She reminds us that diabetes does not choose the size of your dreams.
There is a lot of misinformation about diabetes. It starts with stereotypes—that it affects someone older, someone inactive, or someone responsible for their illness. These stereotypes are not just unfair but dangerous. They delay diagnosis, silence families and fuel stigma
But for every story of triumph, there are hundreds we never hear. Because stigma works quietly. It tells families to keep a child’s diagnosis a secret. It convinces parents that their child won’t get married, succeed, or live fully. For many families in India, courage isn’t the only challenge. Insulin and testing supplies are expensive.
India can change this. Across India, remarkable work is already being done by teachers, doctors, parents and community advocates who refuse to let diabetes go unnoticed by recognizing the early warning signs like excessive thirst, frequent urination, exhaustion, unexplained weight loss. What inspires me most is how local leaders are driving change by connecting families to information, ensuring children stay in school and building understanding through compassion and care.
T1D is part of many Indian stories, including mine. For many, it is a daily negotiation of care, cost and courage. Yet, in those everyday acts of perseverance lies something powerful: a refusal to be defined by diabetes.
India has the compassion, ingenuity and collective strength to support people with diabetes. Let us give every person with diabetes the chance to live a full, limitless life.

Nick Jones told me, ‘I watched The Sky Is Pink and Priyanka Chopra is outstanding!’-Shonali Bose

Developing a small film set in the North-east, The Sky is Pink director Shonali Bose shares her plans of making two movies, one independent and another mainstream, every year
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 7, 2025)
For filmmaker Shonali Bose, 60 is the perfect time to return to her old self. To her indie roots, as she puts it. Even as she, along with co-director Nilesh Maniyar, is taking their documentary, A Fly on the Wall, to film festivals, Bose is simultaneously setting the stage for her indie film.
“I’m turning 60 this year. I felt I needed to go back to my indie roots, and by that, I don’t only mean budget but where I won’t have any creative interference,” she begins. Though tight-lipped about the film, Bose shares an integral detail. “It’s based in the North-east,” she says.
In her mind, the National Award-winning director—who previously helmed The Sky Is Pink (2019) and a segment in Modern Love: Mumbai (2022)—has a blueprint of how she wants the next phase of her career to shape up. “I will work for free on the indie film. Also, there is a studio film that I’m hopeful will happen. Every year I want to make one indie film and a commercial film.”
Studio-backed films take time as they depend on stars’ availability. But the director points out that Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar kept their stardom away as they shaped The Sky Is Pink, a life-affirming tale of a couple whose daughter passed away.
“Priyanka told me later that her performance was inspired by getting into my skin [and by my journey after] losing my son, Ishan. Nilesh [co-writer] and I spent three days with Priyanka where she wanted to discuss the script. When we came out of a meeting, I had [multiple] missed calls from Siddharth [Roy Kapur, producer]. That’s when I realized we were gone for 10 hours [in one session]!”
Though the film was lauded, Bose reveals Chopra was dejected by the response to her performance. “People close to her felt it was too subtle. She felt bad. After she went to the US, I got a video call from Nick [Jonas, Chopra’s husband]. He said, ‘I watched the film and Priyanka is outstanding!’ I asked him to hand over the phone to Priyanka. When I asked her how she was feeling, she was so happy. The US audience’s response was similar to that of Nick.”
Bose is currently taking A Fly On The Wall, a documentary she helmed with co-director Nilesh Maniyar, to film festivals. It charts the last days of Chika Kapadia, the duo’s friend, who chose physician-assisted suicide in Switzerland in 2022, following a terminal cancer diagnosis.
Parineeti Chopra, Raghav Chadha to tie the knot at Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas's wedding venue?

Sources inform that Parineeti Chopra and Raghav Chadha will tie the knot at Priyanka and Nick’s wedding venue, the Umaid Bhavan Palace in Jodhpur
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; June 11, 2023)
Wedding shenanigans go on until D-Day. Parineeti Chopra and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha, who had a dreamy engagement on May 13, have been scouting venues for some time. The couple was seen visiting a few palace hotels in Rajasthan last month. Sources reveal that the wedding festivities will begin by October-end, spilling into the first week of November.
While rumours have been rife that the couple were considering getting married at the Oberoi Udaivilas Palace in Udaipur, a source informs, “The Umaid Bhavan Palace, in Jodhpur is a strong option too. It is known to be the biggest palace in India, with spacious air-conditioned rooms and suites designed for royalty.”
Coincidentally, the Umaid Bhavan Palace was also the venue of Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas’s wedding in 2018, which is rumoured to have cost about Rs. 3 crores.
“The sangeet and mehendi ceremonies will take place at the palace hotel, followed by an intimate party with close friends and relatives. After the wedding, two receptions will be held, one and Delhi and the other in Mumbai. While Priyanka and Nick’s wedding was a grand one, Parineeti and Raghav’s nuptials will be an intimate affair, with attendance only from a few people from Bollywood. Parineeti is organizing every tiny detail herself,” the source adds.
On the work front, Chopra has Shiddat 2, which she will wrap up right before the wedding. The actor will pick up Imtiaz Ali’s Chamkila after a two-week break in November.

Actor Parineeti Chopra and politico Raghav Chadha’s frenetic venue search hints at a big fat Indian wedding
Navya Kharbanda (HINDUSTAN TIMES; June 11, 2023)
Actor Parineeti Chopra and politician Raghav Chadha are busy scouting the perfect venue for their wedding in Rajasthan. They were spotted at Jaipur airport in May and stayed with their families in Udaipur for a few days as they carried out their recce.
While a recent report claims that the couple, who got engaged on May 13, have finalised The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur for the wedding, we have learnt from our sources that the couple is still on the hunt.
“Nothing has been confirmed so far. They did not like the room size at Udaivilas, and the room inventory (87 rooms) wasn’t sufficient either. Taj Lake Palace, too, didn’t make it to the shortlisted venues for the latter reason. They might pick any of these for the wedding functions, but all the guests cannot be accommodated here. So, it’s clear that their guest list is not small and it’s going to be a big fat wedding,” the source says, adding that the couple has shortlisted two properties in Jaipur (Sawai Man Mahal and Rambagh Palace) and Udaipur (Taj Aravali and Mementos) each.
The couple will tie the knot on October 28 or 29, according to sources. “Their family and close relatives from the engagement will be there for the wedding. There will be two receptions, one for Parineeti’s extended family from Ambala (Chandigarh) and one for the film fraternity (Mumbai),” says the source.
Meanwhile, the couple has been spending time in London together. A picture of them watching the India vs Australia World Test Championship final at the Oval was shared widely by Chopra’s fan clubs. The couple has previously attended IPL 2023 matches in Mohali too. A photo of Chadha and Chopra posing with a fan in the UK capital (below) also went viral.
Priyanka Chopra doesn’t try to be a diva; she is one. But at the same time, she has no tantrums-Shiv Khandelwal

Having shot BTS video of Chopra’s Met Gala outing, creative director talks of the superstar’s warm nature and the frenzy around the event
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; May 17, 2023)
How does she do this?’ That has been the one question playing on every fan’s mind as Priyanka Chopra Jonas served one statement look after another, year on year, at the Met Gala. Guess now we have the answer. Creative director-cinematographer Shiv Khandelwal, who was part of the five-member team that shot the behind-the-scenes video of her 2023 Met Gala appearance, gives us a peek into the fun and frenzy that went into styling her.
“This was the biggest fashion moment, and I had to capture it in all its glory. But when I entered the room, I felt I should capture her energy,” begins Khandelwal, the only Indian on the team.
This year, Chopra chose a black Valentino gown with a thigh-high slit. She knew just the thing to add to the dazzle — an 11.6 carat diamond Bulgari necklace, priced at a whopping Rs 204 crore.
Often, a behind-the-scenes video is not always organic since actors may put up a facade to further their public image. But Chopra is not one of them. Khandelwal says she is as spirited in her private space as she is in front of her audience.
“Priyanka knows what she wants, and is authentic. Even as she tried on her necklace, standing in front of the mirror, she was all raw and real. There was no faking it. One reason could be because her team makes her comfortable. She doesn’t try to be a diva; she is one. But at the same time, she has no tantrums. There is a lot of warmth to her.”
Having her husband Nick Jonas and daughter Malti Marie added to the homely atmosphere of the New York hotel suite, where she was readying for the fashion extravaganza. Recalling a “raw” moment between the couple, he says, “As we walked downstairs, there was a frenzy [outside the hotel]. [Amid the commotion], there was a moment when Priyanka and Nick looked into each other’s eyes, as if saying, ‘Okay, ready.’ That was a raw moment between them.”

When Priyanka Chopra felt like a ‘doormat’ in past relationships

HINDUSTAN TIMES (May 12, 2023)
Before actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas found love in the arms of her husband, singer Nick Jonas, she was linked with multiple people from Bollywood. However, Priyanka never confirmed or denied the rumours. In a recent episode of Alex Cooper’s podcast Call Her Daddy, she spoke at length about all the actors she dated in India.
The Citadel star said she was a “serial monogamist” when it came to dating. “I went from relationship to relationship. I did not give myself time. I always ended up dating the actors I worked with or people I met on the set. I had an idea of what a relationship should be like, and I kept seeking that and trying to fit the people that came into my life into my idea of that relationship,” she shares.
Now based in Los Angeles (USA), the 40-year-old, during the chat, admitted that she would feel the need “to be the caretaker” in her previous relationships and always felt “like it’s okay to cancel my job or my work or my meeting or my priority to make sure that he’s propped up”.
Priyanka added, “It (prioritizing her boyfriends) was so normalized in my brain that I ended up giving the power [in the relationship to them and] I never stood up for myself. I literally would become like a doormat.”
While some of her “relationships may have ended really badly”, she believes that her exes have “been really wonderful”.

Sidharth-Kiara, Vicky-Katrina, Priyanka-Nick: Royal Rajasthan is the favourite venue for celeb weddings

Plenty of options and privacy make the land of maharajas a befitting setting for starry nuptials, say wedding planners
Divya Kaushik (BOMBAY TIMES; February 13, 2023)
The much-anticipated Sidharth Malhotra-Kiara Advani wedding at a fort hotel in Jaisalmer brought back the spotlight (yet again) on Rajasthan and showed us how the land of maharajas continues to be the favourite wedding destination for celebrity couples. From Elizabeth Hurley-Arun Nayyar and Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas to Vicky Kaushal-Katrina Kaif, over the years there have been many celebrity couples who chose to exchange their vows in Rajasthan’s regal surroundings. Wedding planners say that ample options of forts, palaces and heritage properties and the privacy they offer are some of the reasons why most celebrities opt for Rajasthan to say ‘I do’.
While it is true that picture-perfect locations, popular heritage properties and the charm of royal weddings attract celeb couples to the desert state when it comes to tying the knot, complete privacy from paps and curious onlookers is another reason why celebs prefer Rajasthan as a wedding destination.
“I think after Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas and Vicky Kaushal-Katrina Kaif’s weddings, most celebs are sure that it is very difficult to breach the privacy and security at heritage properties in Rajasthan. Also, these properties are usually located at remote locations, away from the main cities, which also helps high-profile couples keep their big day a private affair. We have been in talks with a celebrity couple who is planning to get married by the end of this year, and they want the wedding at a palace in Rajasthan, which can be fully booked and blocked for outsiders for four days of wedding festivities,” says a Mumbai-based wedding planner, who organised a celeb wedding in Udaipur last year.
“Privacy and security are of high importance when planning a celebrity wedding. Also, the quality of services, hospitality and crisis management at the event is to be minutely monitored. The other reasons why Rajasthan is the most preferred wedding destination are its royal charm, rustic beauty and authentic venue options, like the spectacular forts and palaces,” says Rajat Gera, Director of Sales & Marketing of the heritage hotel that hosted Vicky-Katrina’s wedding.

‘AFTER SID-KIARA’S WEDDING, QUERIES FOR JAISALMER HAVE INCREASED’
In the popularity chart, Udaipur and Jodhpur are rated higher than Jaipur, and wedding planners say that this is because of the availability of better heritage, luxury properties. “Also, Jaipur is mostly overbooked in the wedding season, and celebs look for an exclusive venue that is far away from the city centre. After Sid-Kiara’s wedding, queries for Jaisalmer have increased,” says Minnat Lalpuria, founder and CEO of a company that helps clients with luxury wedding destinations.
Anchor and event organiser Nitin Arora says, “Jaisalmer is becoming popular for celeb weddings, and thanks to Sid-Kiara’s shaadi, people have started looking for offbeat havelis and luxury palaces on the outskirts of Jaisalmer,” says Arora.
WOW FACTOR FOR FIRANG GUESTS
Apart from Bollywood couples, there are many other celebs who had their wedding in Rajasthan – including Isha Ambani’s wedding in Udaipur. Wedding planners say that connectivity of major cities in Rajasthan with other metros is one reason why it is easier to plan a high-profile wedding there.
“Anyone who is having guests from overseas, would want to have a palace or fort wedding in Rajasthan. Popular locations like Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Jaipur have good flight connectivity,” says Arora.

Priyanka Chopra opens up on surrogacy, being accused of ‘renting womb’

BOMBAY TIMES (January 21, 2023)
Priyanka Chopra Jonas welcomed her first child with her husband, Nick Jonas, through surrogacy in January last year. The actress recently revealed that while there were many messages congratulating her on the arrival of her baby, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, some trolled her for opting for surrogacy. While some accused her of “outsourcing” her pregnancy, others said that her busy schedule was the reason behind the decision.
In her recent interview with British Vogue, talking about the trolling, she said, “I’ve developed a tough hide when people talk about me. But it’s so painful when they talk about my daughter. I’m like, ‘Keep her out of it. ’ I know what it felt like to hold her little hands when they were trying to find her veins. So no, she’s not going to be gossip. I’ve been really protective of this chapter of my life with my daughter. Because it’s not about my life only. It’s hers too. ”
Opening up about her decision to opt for surrogacy, Priyanka said, “I had medical complications. This was a necessary step, and I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.”
She further added, “You don’t know what I’ve been through. And just because I don’t want to make my medical history, or my daughter’s, public, doesn’t give you the right to make up whatever the reasons were.”
Priyanka’s daughter was born a trimester before the due date. She said, “I was in the OR (operating room) when she came out. She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive-care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed (in her tiny body) to intubate her.”
Their baby spent the next three months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Due to the pandemic, only the couple could visit their child. “We spent every single day with her on my chest, on my husband’s chest. I didn’t know if she would make it or not,” said the actress.
PC and Nick celebrated Malti’s first birthday recently. “People say she looks like Nick. I don’t believe it,” she said.

HINDUSTAN TIMES (January 21, 2023)
A year after welcoming her daughter, Malti Marie, actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas has addressed why she opted for surrogacy and how she dealt with the hateful social media comments that followed her decision.
Speaking to British Vogue in a recent interview, Priyanka, who is married to singer Nick Jonas, said her daughter was born a trimester too early, in January last year. “I was in the OR [operating room] when she came out. She was so small, smaller than my hand,” she said, adding, “I saw what the intensive care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed [in her tiny body] to intubate her... I didn’t know if she would make it.”
The Matrix Resurrections (2021) actor further revealed that she went the surrogacy route due to certain “medical complications”: “This was a necessary step, and I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months,” the 40-year-old said.
On being trolled for “renting a womb”, Priyanka added, “I have developed a tough hide when people talk about me. But it’s so painful when they talk about my daughter. I’m like, ‘Keep her out of it’.”
Working with Priyanka Chopra would be incredible-Bear Grylls

The survival expert has a long list of Indian celebs he wants to work with, and he hopes to remedy the lack of female stars on his outings soon
Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 31, 2022)
Bear Grylls has gone on several adventures in his life. But his outings with global Indian icons, from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to actor Ranveer Singh, have a special place in the survival expert’s heart.
“The warm welcome and love I always feel from Indian superstars, it makes me feel like an honorary Indian. They are always so kind. India is always so close to my heart — the fans, the spectacular wilderness, the amazing food and the kindest of people,” says Grylls, who found popularity with his show, Man Vs Wild.
He has made several visits to India, which include getaways in Kolkata and Darjeeling. In the past few years, he has been on adventures with Indian actors such as Ajay Devgn, Vicky Kaushal, Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, with Singh being the latest addition to his list with Netflix’s interactive show, Ranveer vs Wild With Bear Grylls. The one thing that is evident in Grylls’ list is that he is yet to head on a wild trail with a female Indian icon, and he confesses that he is looking forward to the day, saying it “will happen, and soon”.
In fact, when it comes to taking other Indian celebrities on an adventure in the wilderness, he has a long wishlist. “Virat (Kohli; cricketer) would be amazing — a true heart of a lion and kind spirit. And actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas would be incredible! I took her husband (singer-actor Nick Jonas) away once on a journey and he was a great guy. People would love to hear her story, too,” he elaborates.
Sharing his experience about working with Singh, Grylls says, “Life is all about finding our own true purpose and living with eyes and heart wide open with courage and gratitude — those qualities shone bright in Ranveer. In return, all I sought to give him is encouragement to keep living as he is.”
Looking back at his time spent in India, and with stars from the country, the 48-year-old adds, “The biggest learning experience while working with them has been that together we can all do so much more. When we stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the wild, we can overcome any obstacle.”

In an emotional post on Instagram, Priyanka wrote, “On this Mother’s Day we can’t help but reflect on these last few months and the rollercoaster we’ve been on, which we now know, so many people have also experienced. After 100 plus days in the NICU, our little girl is finally home (sic).”
Priyanka added, “Every family’s journey is unique and requires a certain level of faith, and while ours was a challenging few months, what becomes abundantly clear, in retrospect, is how precious and perfect every moment is. We are overjoyed that our little girl is finally home, and just want to thank every doctor, nurse and specialist at Rady Children’s La Jolla and Cedar Sinai, Los Angeles, who were there selflessly every step of the way. Babe, you inspire me and every way, and you are taking to this new role with such ease and steadiness. I am so grateful to be on this journey with you. You are already an incredible mother. Happy Mother’s Day. I love you (sic).”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband Nick Jonas took to social media on Friday night to share the news of the arrival of their first child. “We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate,” the couple’s statement said. They chose not to reveal their baby’s name or sex. “We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family,” the couple added.
Priyanka and Nick’s colleagues and friends from Bollywood and Hollywood, including Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar, Lara Dutta Bhupathi, Dia Mirza, Vishal Bhardwaj, John Legend, Octavia Spencer and Mindy Kaling among others congratulated the couple. Actor Kal Penn even offered the new parents some help. “Congratulations! Kalpen uncle is ready to babysit,” he wrote.
In her recent interview with an international publication, Priyanka had said that having babies is a “big part of our desire for the future. By God’s grace, when it happens, it happens. ” She had also indicated that they were ready to slow down the hectic pace of work. “We’re both okay with that,” she had.

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 23, 2022)
Taking everyone by surprise (well, not so much after they had joked about ‘expecting’ on the Jonas Brothers Family Roast), actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas, 39, and her husband, singer Nick Jonas, 29, announced on Friday night that they have become parents via surrogacy.
The couple broke the news on social media: “We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate. We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family. Thank you so much.”
While everyone speculated on whether it was a boy or a girl, reports began to circulate that the couple’s first child is a girl. And Priyanka’s cousin, actor Meera Chopra, confirms to us, “Priyanka is gonna be a super mum to her baby girl. She always wanted to have lot of kids, so I am very happy for this new chapter in her life. She has excelled in every area of her life so being a mother is an extension to her powerful self. We are all very proud of her.”
According to the Daily Mail, they welcomed their daughter 12 weeks early at a Southern California hospital outside Los Angeles, US where she is expected to remain until she is healthy enough to go home. The source further said the couple had been wanting to have a baby together for ‘quite some time,’ but their busy schedules had gotten in the way.
“Priyanka doesn’t have any fertility issues preventing her from having a baby, but she is 39 now, so it’s not getting any easier. Their busy work schedules also mean that it’s difficult for them to physically be together to conceive when she is ovulating, so some time ago they went down the surrogacy route. This is the woman’s fifth surrogacy. They met her and really liked her,” claimed the source.

I’m very confident in what I bring to the table now-Priyanka Chopra

Vinita Dawra Nangia (BOMBAY TIMES; September 17, 2021)
Priyanka Chopra Jonas is an icon for all who dared to dream and for those who dared not; for all who tried and failed, and particularly for those who never tried for fear of failure. She has done it all. She dreamt, she attempted; she feared, she overcame; she was rejected and then unexpectedly accepted. Was it destiny or carefully laid out plans, sheer grit, or her refusal to accept failure — or is there a formula to her amazing success story? In this chat with us at the Times Lit Fest, Priyanka shares it all:
Priyanka, your mom has famously called you a bit of a rolling stone. But you seem to have found your peace. Has Priyanka Chopra Jonas finally found her groove, or is she a bit unfinished still?
I think I finally found my roots. I always had a groove! But we are all works in progress. We change every day, we evolve. There's a lot I want to do and have in my life going forward. I’ve left a lot of unfinished things in my life and moved on, when I felt they were not going as I wanted - and it’s okay to do that. But today, I can give my younger self a hug and say, it’s okay for all those times when you were sad and cried… I’ve done this. And now it’s time to find solace in where I am, a sense of contentment, and confidence in my craft. I’m very confident in what I bring to the table now, unlike what I was, of course, when I was starting out.
What prompted you to write your memoir? Most people leave it till much later. Did this process help give you a new perspective of yourself?
I’ve been a very private person in my life. Being home for six months during COVID helped me dig deep. So, once I decided to write my memoir, I had to plan whether I was just going to skim the surface as I have done for the last 20 years of being in entertainment or go deeper. I chose to dig deep. I just wanted people to know me. I wanted to give people an insight into what my truth for me is.
When you faced racism in your American school, you moved out… When Bollywood put up fences and you lost good movies, you looked for roles that others would not covet. Was moving away from your chosen path of least resistance, rather than fighting to the finish?
Sometimes the best way to prove that you can do something is by doing it. By fighting a fight that has existed for ever, you may neglect the opportunity of trying another route. I always have multiple plans. I don’t get defined by one failure.
It is like if I am trekking and see a large boulder in front of me. Instead of picking at it I’ll try to go around it. It is the same with fences and ceilings that have been created for women, for people, in every field. You have to work around these.
It looks like I’m the person who’s choosing everything in my life, but it’s not true. I’m just like anybody else. I have spent a lot of time invested in things which were just not working, and I just stayed and stayed, but at some point, you have to choose yourself. Like, when I take my music, for example, I stayed to try it, but I had to recognise when it was not living up to my standards. I knew that it was futile to spend more time there and that’s important to understand.
When you talk about love, you confess that you made the mistake of trying to change according to people’s expectations, of giving too much of yourself. What are the lessons that love has taught you?
I really believe love makes the world go round. For me, love over anything! And the only way to love is deeply and fully and to give yourself completely. The one thing that my marriage has definitely taught me — something I earlier didn’t even feel the need to have, but which I can’t live without now — is having my partner give complete credence and credit to the job that I do, to my work. It’s so amazing when I see how Nick accommodates his life for my achievements or my career and my choices.
Has having been married to Nick changed you in some way as a person?
He has impacted me in a big way. I’ve become a lot calmer in life. I would bite people’s heads off. My husband is a calm person, and he finds solutions. He's a diplomat, whereas I’m just like a mirchi! If I go off, I go off. I have learnt a lot from Nick. He’s an amazingly talented, creative person and we bounce a lot of our work off each other and then we develop things together. So, having a creative partnership with your partner is amazing.
Is there any Bollywood movie of yours that Nick has watched or loves watching again and again?
We both didn’t know very much about each other’s careers, so after we got married, we did sort of show and tell – he showed me his earlier music work, and I showed him a few of my movies, but Nick loves Dil Dhadakne Do. He has watched it multiple times!
Because I was home during Covid, it helped me dig deep for my memoir-Priyanka Chopra

THE TIMES OF INDIA (September 13, 2021)
From being Miss World to a Bollywood actor, singer, film producer and Hollywood star, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has worn many hats over the last two decades. So, it’s no surprise that she thinks that “evolution and reinvention is the name of the game.” “We can’t be the same people we were five or ten years ago. One has to keep changing because if you don’t evolve, you’ll be left behind,” she said at the Times LitFest.
While discussing her memoir Unfinished with Vinita Dawra Nangia, she described the process of writing the book as both exhilarating and exhausting. “I’ve been a private person all my life and I could have skimmed the surface but because I was home during Covid, it helped me dig deep.” She added that “she wanted to tell the story like I would to a friend over coffee” so she chose to record her thoughts and then transcribe them rather than typing them out.
“As a public person no one really knows you,” she said. “I chose to dig deep because I felt that there has been so much written about me and I just wanted to give people an insight into what my truth is.”
Chopra’s big break in the West came from her lead role as Alex Parrish in the TV show Quantico, a character she says she’s proud of. “I haven’t seen too many leading ladies who are Indian in American TV and films,” she said. “I was proud of being able to play a mainstream character without being burdened by my heritage, which should be an asset.”
Speaking of her marriage to American pop singer Nick Jonas, she said that the two shared a creative partnership and often bounced ideas off each other. “The one thing my marriage has taught me is having your partner give complete credence and credit to the job that you do. It’s amazing when I see how Nick accommodates my career and choices,” she said.
“I didn’t realise that I needed my partner to understand the value of how much hard work I’ve put into building this career.” Incidentally Jonas’ favourite PC film is Dil Dhadakne Do, which he has watched several times.

Director Prasoon Pandey of short film Family on how he got the Indian film industry together for the offering
MID-DAY (April 9, 2020)
Ad filmmaker Prasoon Pandey says there is an "incredible back-story" to how a dozen of India's top actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth and Mohanlal, came together for Family, his virtually directed short film on the importance of physical distancing, in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Pandey said Bachchan was most excited about the project and also came up with the idea to include an appeal about helping the daily-wage workers in the film industry. He added that Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt suggested that the director not limit himself to the Hindi film industry only.
Family features Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Kapoor, Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Diljit Dosanjh, Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Sonali Kulkarni, Shiv Raj Kumar and Prosenjit Chatterjee. All the stars speak in their respective local languages, giving it a pan-Indian appeal.
The film chronicles a family's effort to find a misplaced pair of sunglasses belonging to Bachchan's character.
"The back story is incredible. Amit ji's portions were shot by Abhishek. Nick Jonas shot Priyanka's segment, Rajinikanth ji's was shot by his daughter Soundarya. Ranbir and Alia went behind the camera for each other. Everyone was so gracious. They didn't come into the frame, but they were simply helping. They were so selfless," Pandey said.
The director even toyed with the idea of releasing behind-the-scenes footage, but it could not be possible to do so within the limited time he had. Pandey said he first came up with the idea when Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has praised the film on Twitter, announced the lockdown of 21 days. He discussed it with his brother, renowned adman Piyush Pandey, about making a short film that is shot, edited and acted while staying at home.
They called up Bachchan who was "the most excited."
As there was no physical meeting, his son shot a template film — in which he played all the characters — at their home.
"We sent that to all the actors so that they could see each shot precisely, [including details of] how to frame [each shot], and in which direction to look, so that it could connect to the next shot. I sent it on April 2, and told them it would be great if they could shoot it by the next day, and they didn't bat an eyelid. They started shooting on April 3."
Still, there were glitches, and retakes were required, but all the actors cooperated without any hassle.
It was harder to coordinate with Chopra, who is currently in Los Angeles, because of different time zones, but the Quantico star sent in her clips just in time: a day before the final submission of the film. "We started working on the music even before the film was ready. Because the film kept changing with more shots coming in, the music kept changing too," he added.

In an upcoming Spotify episode, 'daddy's lil girl' Priyanka Chopra Jonas draws parallels between husband Nick Jonas, late father Ashok Chopra
MID-DAY (March 19, 2020)
Her backyard may home the fanciest cars available in the market, but Priyanka Chopra Jonas was taught as early as in her teens that even without the accessories, she was among the privileged. "[I grew up in] India, where people are desensitised to poverty. And so was I, until my parents [made me aware]. In their hospital, there were always two beds that were [available], free of cost, for anyone who [needed] to come. My parents would go to villages to treat people who couldn't [travel]. And I'd go with them. I was taught [that I was] privileged; that though we may not have fancy cars, [I] was privileged because I had shelter, food, the [facility] to go to school, and parents who taught me that I have an opinion," Jonas told designer Diane von Furstenberg in Spotify's upcoming podcast, InCharge with DVF.
The 35-minute long episode has her spill details about those aspects of her life that led to the making of one among India's most successful crossover artistes. "I feel like there's a lot that I have to do in the US. I want my work to mean a lot more [than it does]. I don't think America has seen me do the [quantity] of work that I have [done] in India. That's something I'm striving for. I'm producing [projects], doing a movie for Universal with Mindy Kaling, and a reality show with Amazon, which Nick and I are producing." The Amazon show is inspired by Chopra's big, fat Indian wedding, which had sufficient fodder for the making of a show that could interest viewers in the West. However, it is the onset of her relationship with Jonas that tugs at heartstrings."He slid into my DMs and messaged me on Twitter," she says of their introduction. "A co-actor of mine had worked with him before. He texted me and said we should meet. It took us three years to go on a date, and we were engaged two months later."
Chopra can draw several parallels between her late father and her musician-husband. "He feels empowered when he sees me empowered. He'll stand on the side when [lensmen] take [my] pictures [on the red carpet]. He loves [my success]," she says, adding, "They say if you're close to your dad, you end up marrying someone who is like [him]. And Nick is. He's thoughtful, conscientious, and kind. I feel like I ended up marrying a version of [my dad]."

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is happy to see the industry come a long way from the time when male actors enjoyed an unhealthy clout
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 16, 2020)
She has always taken the road less travelled in a career spanning 17 years. From starring in a film that exposed the behind-the-scenes controversies of the fashion world (Fashion; 2008) to playing a character with grey shades in 7 Khoon Maaf (2011) or stepping into the shoes of boxer Mary Kom (2014) in her biopic, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has always earned applause for her acting chops.
Currently, Bollywood is focussing firmly on films with female protagonists, and Priyanka feels the industry has come a long way from the time she started off in films. “When I first started working, we were told, ‘Heroes will decide who the heroine is going to be.’ This was 2002 or 2003; it was on the beck and call of main actors. I’m sure it still happens with a lot of films, but what has changed is the audience, and the acceptance of watching films with content instead of the gender of the lead actor. That’s one big change we’ve seen,” says the 37-year-old, who was last seen in The Sky is Pink (2019).
Priyanka’s all set to star with Richard Madden in an international event series Citadel, developed by Russo Brothers, who are known for directing Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and End Game (2019).
She also adds that there were a lot of naysayers who dissuaded her from taking up roles that eventually turned out to be her career milestones. “When I did Fashion, everyone told me, ‘Women do female-oriented films — I hate that word — when they want to win awards at the end of their careers.’ And, when I did Aitraaz (2004), I was told, ‘People will consider me a ‘vamp’, and my ‘pure’ image will get tarnished.’ I didn’t know any better, so I ended up doing them. There was no one to teach me. Now, we’ve actors like Deepika (Padukone), Alia (Bhatt), Kangana (Ranaut), Vidya (Balan) come out there and say, ‘These are the stories we want to tell, and we will do it so well we will compel you to come in and watch them.’ When I started doing it, very few people were doing it.”
Not just acting, female actors are even producing films that narrate stories that they want to share. “Yes! You start producing films when you want to tell stories no one else is making,” Priyanka continues, “You think, ‘If you’re not going to give me the kind of films I want to do, I’ll just make it myself.’ In America, that’s what I’m doing. It’s a testament not just to the actor but also the audience who are becoming gender blind. My life’s dream is that we stop referring to films as ‘female centric’, actors as ‘female actors’, directors as ‘female directors’, or athletes as ‘female athletes’. It’s just athlete, director, actor!”
Married to singer Nick Jonas, one can’t miss how much the two adore each other as it’s evident from their regular social media posts. Does Nick watch her films? “He loved Mary Kom,” she smiles, “and started asking me boxing-related questions. He cried through The Sky Is Pink, and video called Shonali (Bose), the director.” She says, “These are the kind of films artistes look for. He was invested in that film because we met during the shoot of this film, started dating and got married. He was on the sets while we were filming it!”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas on marriage, ambition, and what it means to be a woman in charge
Deebashree Mohanty (BOMBAY TIMES; November 24, 2019)
You’ve said your mother played a crucial role in forming your views about life...
Both my parents have sacrificed so much of their lives for me. My mom was at the peak of her practice — she’s a doctor — and she quit that and moved to Mumbai because of my aspirations. I became Miss India at 17, and my dad was like, “She’s too young. She can’t be alone.” And my mom was like, “Alright, my daughter’s ambitions matter to me, and I’ll do whatever is required for her dream to be realised.” When I wanted to go to America at 13, my mom and dad made that happen. My family has always been an incredible support system for my ambitions and my dreams.
Has marriage made you see life in a new way? Also, what attracted you to Nick Jonas?
I feel marriage has made me calmer, and far more content. What attracted me to Nick was that we have similar values – we’re both equally dedicated to our families and our careers. So, marriage has only made me grounded and happy.
You are a woman in charge in a world, where gender equations are being talked about; but a lot of people still aren’t comfortable dealing with powerful women. How do you navigate your way without getting worked up?
I grew up in a family that encouraged me to have a voice of my own. My parents have always taught me to be my own person, and have an opinion about the world around me. So, I am who I am. While I do make an effort to accommodate everyone’s views, I will not change for anyone.
Tell us about your journey as an entrepreneur...
When it comes to work, I am a beast, and on that level, I connect with a lot of people around the world because ambition has no colour, it has no language, it has no border or country. Ambition is pure ambition. I have it and I wish for the women of the world to not be afraid to have it, because we have been told for such a long time that ambition is a bad word for a girl. This ambition drives my entrepreneurial pursuits. And I think that has taken me from strength to strength.
How important is it to love yourself?
How can I do and achieve whatever I have, without loving myself? I need to be able to live with my decisions, even be happy with them if I’m to succeed in my endeavours.
Being a global icon, you have to juggle multiple decisions within a stipulated time. How do you manage to stay ahead of the curve?
I think when you are wearing as many hats as I do, decisiveness comes with the territory. There’s no free lunch in the world. It takes dedication, hard work, perseverance and a really good team.
You’ve spent your life in the limelight for almost two decades. How difficult was it to manage?
I’ve been in this industry since I was a teenager, so I’m very used to it… it’s a part and parcel of my life now. So, you just accept it and take everything that comes your way in your stride.
There is a lot of negativity all around, especially on social media. How do you deal with it?
I take it with a pinch of salt. I understand that social media is a platform to express positive and negative emotions, and yes, I do wish that people tried to be nicer, kinder, and better versions of themselves. But this isn’t an ideal world, and I can’t really control what people say about me, but I can control how I perceive it and if I choose to let it affect me or not.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas confesses her fear of matching tunes with husband Nick Jonas on Pro Music Countdown
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; November 24, 2019)
Despite several singles under her belt, Priyanka Chopra Jonas claims she never wants to sing a duet with singer-husband Nick Jonas. While she has featured in his music videos, crooning along with the expert is not something she imagines doing. "I love music, but I don't have that kind of education in the field," explains Chopra on Zee TV's latest musical chat show, Pro Music Countdown.
Chopra, who is the first guest on the show, says that she "won't dare to sing in front of him". And adds that music is something she enjoys, "He's a child prodigy, he makes songs, writes lyrics and composes music. I just like music; hence I will never try a duet with him."
The Sky Is Pink actor goes on to reveal in the Siddharth Kannan-hosted show, that Jonas does a special performance for her "every morning". She says, "Every morning as I wake up, I don't have to turn on the radio because he is playing the piano and singing for me live."
The chat show goes on air today.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas tied the knot in December 2018 PHOTOS: RAAJESSH KASHYAP/ HT
Priyanka Chopra Jonas says that she is happy to be married to someone who has the ‘ability to calm’ her
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 31, 2019)
If there’s one Bollywood celebrity who has truly showed the world what talent Indian actors possess, it has to be Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Be it Hindi films, Hollywood projects or her singing career, she has managed to strike that perfect balance. But this has obviously made her life hectic.
Ask Priyanka how tough managing everything along with her personal life gets, and she exclaims, “It’s tough, but I’m glad I’m married to someone who understands my ambition and drive,” referring to her husband, singer Nick Jonas. The couple got married on December 1 last year. Priyanka continues, “He says this is why he fell in love with me. For both of us, our professional lives are very, very important. We both come from a non-entitled background; our careers were not given to us. We both have worked hard to be where we are, and have had a two-decade long career each. We know what it takes to do what we do, and support each other.”
For a couple, spending time with each other is integral to the relationship, more so when the people belong to two different parts of the world. How are Nick and Priyanka managing so far? “We have a rule,” Priyanka spills the beans, “Nick and I don’t go beyond two-three weeks without seeing each other. Wherever in the world we are, we keep in touch, and video call all the time! It’s important to make the effort to have the other person involved in your life. We do that.”
The actor asserts that “having a work life-personal life balance is very important” for both men and women. “You see more and more working couples today. We put too much pressure on ourselves and our relationships. (People tend to think) ‘It won’t work out if I take on too much work’ — and that’s unfair. It will work out if you want to make it work.”
The 37-year old has her hands full currently. Priyanka will be seen next with Rajkummar Rao in the adaptation of the novel The White Tiger, and We Can Be Heroes. She was also seen recently in the critically-acclaimed The Sky Is Pink with Farhan Akhtar, a Bollywood film she did after a gap of three years. People called it her ‘comeback’. Ask Priyanka whether it bothers her that her Hindi projects are called a ‘comeback’ just because she was busy with other projects, and she says, “I don’t care what people say. ‘Comeback’ ‘Go back’ ‘Here’ ‘There ’, people’s opinions don’t matter. I don’t even think about that. To some people it might be a ‘comeback’, to some it might not!”
Clearly, nothing bothers Priyanka. So, then how’s married life treating her? Her face lights up as she says, “Damn, it’s the best thing that has ever happened to me! We complete a year this December. I wish I knew it was so amazing, I would have done it before (laughs). It’s great to be married to someone who’s my rock, and has the ability to calm me. It’s given me wings in such a beautiful way!”

Madhureeta Mukherjee (BOMBAY TIMES; October 8, 2019)
Yes, she’s an international actor, she hobnobs with crème de la crème in the West, sashays on the red carpets of Hollywood with the glitterati and all that jazz, but deep down, she’s every bit the cool desi girl. Someone who dared to dream big, while unnerving a few, and inspiring most. And behind all that success and glory is years of sweat and toil. Priyanka Chopra Jonas — always high on confidence, spunk and unbeatable willpower — tells us, “I have never been a sharer of my life. I share a lot of trivial things, but the other side of it, I have never spoken about it”. In a conversation with BT, the actress talks about how her upcoming film, The Sky Is Pink, helped her heal, the lessons she learnt from her dad, living in two homes (across continents) and her dream life with hubby, Nick Jonas. Read on...You are constantly shuttling back and forth between the US and India. While Mumbai will always be your home ground, does America also feel like home now?
Well, my apartment in New York feels like home, as I have been living there for over two-and-a-half years. I love going back there. Now, Nick and I are looking for a place in Los Angeles, and that will be the first home that we will build together, so I am really excited about it.
What is the first thing you do as soon as you land in Mumbai?
There are two flights that I usually take. One, where I land at around 3 am, and the other, at 1 pm. When I take the latter, the first thing I do is have an elaborate lunch at home. My mom gives instructions to the staff at home to start readying the food as soon as I head out of the airport. I miss my comfort food and ghar ka khana in the US. We get Indian food almost everywhere in America, and even my chef in New York knows how to make some Indian dishes, but my home food in Mumbai tastes different. Yahan ke ghee mein hi farak hai.
Coming from Bareilly to Mumbai and winning the Miss India and Miss World titles, then following your Bollywood dreams, stardom, fame, et al. Then, gradually making a transition to the West with American shows and Hollywood movies, and of course, marrying a pop star. Your life seems to be what dreams are made of, at least from the outside...
I can’t begin telling you what all it took to get there. As a person, I have never been a sharer of my life. I share a lot of trivial things, as I like doing that, but the other side of it, which is all about my trials, tribulations and strife, and things that emotionally hurt or affect me… I have never spoken about it. I don’t want to play victim, I don’t need sympathy and I don’t want people to say, ‘Hai, kitni mushkil life thi, dekho achha hua ki acchi cheezein mil gayi usko’. You don’t need that. Everyone’s life is tough, and everyone has their own struggle. I am really glad that my life looks like a fairy tale, as that was the intention (smiles). I am really blessed, and even though the journey has been arduous, and tough at every step, the end game has always been good and positive. I feel that someone is looking out for me.
After your 2016 release Jai Gangaajal, this week, we will be seeing you in Shonali Bose’s The Sky Is Pink. We believe that your journey with her started long ago, even before you met Nick, and the two of you developed a great bond...
Shonali came to my New York home early last year and finalised the film. At that point, Nick was nowhere in the scene. Cut to June, we start dating and by August, we were engaged, and that is when we began filming. By then, Shonali knew that we would be getting married at some point during the year. It (marriage) was right in the middle of the schedule of a massively difficult movie. In retrospect, it was quite ironic; it was such a joyous moment in my life, and here we were, shooting this film where we are talking about difficult things like death.
Shonali said that nothing distracts you from what you are doing. So, you could be shooting a tough scene, and cut to a few hours later, you could be pouring over wedding details….
This will be a slightly long-winded answer… when I first started acting in movies back in 2003, I didn’t know what acting was all about. I thought that it was a glamorous profession where you wear lovely clothes, dance and look beautiful. In the course of the next few years, I realised that it was such an amazing craft and what I bring to it, is what it will be. Whatever happens between ‘action’ and ‘cut’ is my job and that space is my playing field. The moment I realised that, I had to figure out how to do it. I also realised that if I stay in my character, I get bored. It works for other actors and I tried that, too, but it does not work for me. I prep before I come on set, I do workshops and I know my lines pat. But on set, I do chichorapan, laugh and enjoy myself. When the camera and lights turn on, I switch to my character. It is also because I know my character really well before I start the movie, so much that my character becomes my best friend. If you ask me how my character will react in a particular situation, I can exactly tell you that. I prefer it this way, as it keeps my performance spontaneous and alive.
Is there any character that was hard to come out of after the shoot ended?
This one (The Sky Is Pink). Not the role, really, but it’s about the way you get attached to a film. This movie has impacted me a lot in a positive way. It helped me deal with emotions, which I hadn’t dealt with before. I had a lot of dark emotions regarding my father’s death and for a long time I didn’t know how to process it. I always looked up to my dad and he was my friend. We used to call each other twins as we were the same people. I didn’t process that loss after he passed away, I was angry, and I took it out on myself. I was self-destructive in a way and I emotionally went through all that. But through the course of this movie, that changed. The whole thought behind the story is, why not celebrate the life that a person lived, instead of living through the sorrow attached to him or her not being there. There was such a lightness to that thought, that I think I healed with this film. I had to open up my heart and go to deep places for this movie. It is special, as it is inspired by real-life people who thrive in extraordinary circumstances.
In the past, you have spoken a lot about confidence being that one key element, which has helped you get this far. Does all that willpower and confidence stem from the fact that you didn’t have it easy, and you had to have that fighting spirit to sail through and survive — in two different entertainment industries across the globe?
I taught myself to be confident, you are not born with it. It is an exercise that we all can teach ourselves. I learnt it when I went to boarding school in Class III. I was this brat, as I was my parents’ only child for a while, and then my brother came along, and I got brattier as he was getting all the attention. I was sent to boarding school and the environment was so different there. My dad sat me down and told me that the beauty of going to a new place is that you can be whoever you choose to be and no one else will know the difference. Every time I entered a new environment, I told myself… who do I want to be now, I can be that person. That’s why I say that confidence is important; that is the easiest thing you can teach yourself and the best thing you can learn.
Would you say that you are fiercely ambitious? And did you ever have people around tell you, ‘Oh, she is too ambitious’?
Yes, I am fiercely ambitious, though I think that the word ambition has a really bad connotation, when it comes to women. When it comes to men, it is considered sexy and hot, and people say, ‘Wow, he’s so ambitious’. But while referring to ambitious women, they will say, ‘Badi ambitious hai!’ You get the difference? I chose to defy that. I have always chosen to defy that. I am fiercely ambitious, and I am proudly ambitious. I will always be! I feel girls have been denied opportunities for such a long time that if you allow ambition to become a bad word, women will not get or seek opportunities. Today, we are in an environment where we are surrounded by some amazing men who stand by us and want us to thrive. They are listening to us. Yes, all of them out there are not like that, but I choose to focus on the positive. So, at this stage, you can’t let social norms or stereotypes dictate your behaviour, because then, we will never evolve.
You are part of two massive movie industries, and you have also featured on Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women List (in 2017 and 2018). What are your thoughts on the pay parity issue, which has been a raging discussion in the West, too? In India, do you see a significant change?
Look at how amazing it is that the conversation has started, and it is so loud. Pehle koi sochta bhi nahi tha. I was told by a filmmaker many years ago that if I don’t settle for the price I was being paid, which was about two per cent of my male co-actor’s remuneration, I would be replaced by another actress. I was also relatively established by that time. It affected me and at that point, I told myself that I will be irreplaceable, and that there will be a day when you will only want a Priyanka Chopra in your film. I strove to work towards that. The pay parity debate reflects how women have been devalued in society in every aspect. A woman has to work twice as hard to make the same amount of money as a man, in most cases. This conversation must turn into action, and it will take people to get woke and the industry to get woke. It is happening slowly. Pay parity is still looked upon as… zaroorat kya hai? Today, in our industry, we have so many female actors and filmmakers whose films open well, and the audience go to watch them because they are good. With this change, even the remuneration for women needs to change. We have also worked just as hard. I believe that we are going in the right direction, but yes, a lot of work still needs to be done.
On another note, it will be a year of being married. So, is Nick catching up on Bollywood movies? Which are his PeeCee favourites?
Hmnn…not really. He watched Mary Kom by himself one day. I was traveling and he called me and said, ‘Babe, I am missing you, so I am watching your movie’. I thought that was really sweet. Right now, we are both discovering each other’s professional lives. Before I met him, I didn’t know much about the Jonas brothers and their music. He is discovering my work, too. We share things like…. this is my first video, this is the movie I am embarrassed about and stuff like that.
We believe you have said that having a baby is your priority right now...
Well, it is not like it is priority; what I said has been misconstrued, as usual. I said that I hope we are blessed with it, whenever it happens. Yes, it is something I would want for us as the next step… like making a family and building a home together.
