Stories centred on dysfunctional families and the women within them have increasingly found space in cinema. From the Hindi film Maa Behen to the critically acclaimed Marathi film Tighee, filmmakers are exploring the complexities of mother-daughter and sisterly relationships with greater depth and nuance.
Directed by Jeejivisha Kale, Tighee earned acclaim and won the Best Screenplay award at the New York Indian Film Festival, with writers Nikhil Mahajan and Prajakta Deshmukh being recognized for their work. The film stars actress-producer Nehha Pendse alongside Bharati Achrekar and Sonalee Kulkarni in pivotal roles.
Reflecting on the growing exploration of womanhood, relationships, resilience, and self-discovery in contemporary cinema, Nehha says, “For years, the right or leverage to be flawed was handed down to male characters, and that was accepted and even applauded. Women, on the other hand, were expected to carry the weight of morality and rationality while being the epitome of love and sacrifice. While those expectations still exist, very little thought was given to the fact that women, just like men, are layered individuals. They are human, constantly figuring things out, and they too can make mistakes. Tighee worked because all three women in the film were flawed, and women in the audience finally felt represented. We have realized that being put on a pedestal is a trap, and we are no longer willing to accept it, either in life or in the representation of women on screen.”
She further adds, “Life is complex, and so are the relationships we build. Many of these stories are shaped by women and their lived experiences. Marathi cinema has always embraced strong, women-centric narratives, and I believe it is important that more films are told from a woman’s perspective. These stories are relatable, meaningful, and deserve to be seen more often on screen.”
Speaking about Tighee being showcased at the prestigious festival, she says, “It still feels surreal. The response we received after the screening was truly overwhelming and deeply gratifying. Taking Tighee to an international audience has been a long-cherished dream, and watching the film resonate with people across cultures has been incredibly fulfilling.”

Actor Nehha Pendse’s weight loss journey has been inspiring fans on social media. In a recent post, the 38-year-old, who’s lost eight kilos, shared a before-and-after picture of her transformation. “I know my body keeps fluctuating in terms of how it looks. I also know what is the best and worst of what my body can look like. This awareness laid the foundation for my weight loss journey,” says Pendse.
The Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! actor doesn’t believe in setting huge goals within a short time when it comes to weight loss. “I focus on understanding my body’s needs, and strive for gradual, sustainable progress. I had an honest conversation with myself where I thought, ‘I know I can look a certain way and I don’t want to put any mental pressure on myself, but can I try to achieve what we did at some point?’ There is a lot of patience and compassion in that process, instead of thinking, ‘Kuch bhi ho jaaye, mujhe maheene mein four kg kam karna hai,” she says.
Pendse credits her weight loss to eating a balanced diet, cutting her caffeine intake and staying hydrated. “I eat cheese, ghee, cream and even whole eggs. And I saw noticeable results within just 20 days,” she wraps up.
Vidisha Srivastava replaces Nehha Pendse in Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai

Nehha Pendse will no longer play Anita bhabhi in Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! The makers have roped in a new face to portray the part. Vidisha Srivastava, who is currently seen as Shivubai in Kashibai Bajirao Ballal, has been finalised for the character.
The actress says, “It’s a great opportunity and a big challenge at the same time. I strongly feel that I am fit for the part in terms of looks and performance. Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! is definitely a turning point in my career and can be termed as my biggest break so far.”
While she has watched a few episodes that had the other actresses playing the part, Vidisha wants to make the character her own. She shares, “It’s a massive responsibility on my shoulders to take over from my predecessor, but I will play Anita bhabhi my way. Though this is my debut in the comedy genre, I am jumping into it without any pressure. I am excited about this new opportunity. I hope people accept me as the new Anita bhabhi.”
When the show began in 2015, Saumya Tandon was signed to play the part. Nehha replaced her in January 2021. Vidisha is the third actress to play Anita bhabhi.

Nehha Pendse is likely to exit Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai in a couple of months. The makers of the show are currently looking for a new actress to step into Nehha’s shoes, who plays Anita bhabhi. Several actresses have auditioned for the part.
A unit hand tells us, “Yes, we are in the process of bringing a new actress on board for the character of Anita bhabhi and are auditioning actresses. We should be able to lock someone in a few weeks. Nehha’s one-year contract will end in April and she isn’t too keen to renew it. One of the major factors of her exiting the show is the long commute. She spends hours travelling to the set and back home. It has taken a toll on her health. The makers and the actress thought that they would be able to manage it but it is now seeming difficult.”
Both Nehha and producer Benaifer Kohli remained unavailable for comment. The character of Anita bhabhi was originally played by Saumya Tandon, who quit the show in August 2020. Nehha was roped in to step into Saumya’s shoes to play Anita bhabhi in Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! in January 2021.

Nehha has been shooting for Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! as Anita bhabhi, the character played by Saumya Tandon earlier. When asked if it gets to her when people constantly compare her performance with Saumya, even after a month of shooting for the show, she says, “I was mentally prepared that people will draw comparisons; it’s such a popular show and people are attached to the characters. However, the comparison will never affect my performance. It’s been more than a month that I have been shooting for the show and I think people have now realised what I can bring to the table. Initially, I agree that the audience was a bit reluctant in terms of accepting me as the new Anita bhabhi, but now when we look at the TRPs going up, I think things are changing, and slowly people are accepting me.”
Talking about the challenges she had to face in showbiz, she shares, “As a woman, in any workplace, if you are vulnerable, people try to take advantage of you. People have tried to take advantage of me. However, I think that all these incidents make you stronger.”
While highlighting pay disparity in the entertainment industry, she adds, “As a woman, initially, you are not taken seriously. You need to prove yourself time and again. This is a sad reality. But once you have done that and made a space for yourself, you can demand as much money as you want. I think it’s all about how much you deliver, which ultimately determines your worth.”

The wait to see the new Anita bhabhi in Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! is over. After months of deliberations, the makers of the TV show have zeroed in on actress Nehha Pendse to step into Saumya Tandon’s shoes. The latter quit the serial in August last year, after being a part of it for five years, citing monotony and a wish to grow as an artiste as reasons for leaving.
In a chat with BT while talking about her decision to quit the show, Saumya had told us, “You can say that it’s an impractical decision to quit a stable job, that too, in an established show. But I realised that being employed and earning a regular income was not exciting enough anymore. The desire to grow as an artiste was intense — I want to do projects where there is scope for growth.”
Interestingly, the makers — Benaifer Kohli and Sanjay Kohli — had approached Nehha to play the new Anita bhabhi soon after Saumya quit the show. However, things didn’t materialise then and they began approaching other actresses. Four months later, they reconnected and locked the deal. Nehha is expected to start shooting soon. Incidentally, she had earlier worked in the show May I Come In Madam? that was made by the same production house.
Kapil Sharma goes on a break again; producers of Family Time With Kapil Sharma to break ties?

Producers of new show plan to break ties with the actor-comedian as he goes missing; unit told shoot won’t resume anytime soon

On March 25, Kapil Sharma made a comeback on the small screen with a game show, Family Time with Kapil Sharma, but two episodes on, buzz is the channel has decided to give the show a break. While it is not clear yet for how long the comedian–actor will be off the air, the cast and crew has been informed that the shoot isn’t expected to resume anytime soon. The first two episodes were shot with Ajay Devgn and Abhay Deol, Patralekhaa respectively.
A source in the know says, “Producers Hemant Ruprell and Ranjit Thakur, plan to discontinue their association with the show but the set hasn’t been dismantled yet. Sony channel plans to wait for a few weeks and see how things pan out before taking the final call.”
Meanwhile a spokesperson from the production house, when contacted, admitted that a meeting was being held to decide if they should continue with the show. Last week, they were caught unawares after Kapil failed to turn up for the shoot after an altercation with a scribe and the channel was forced to air an old episode in the 8pm weekend slot.
Kapil’s co-host on Family Time…, Nehha Pendse, has taken up two other shows. “Yes, I have signed Partners on SAB TV and Entertainment Ki Raat Season 2 on Colors. People assume I have left the show but that is not true. I am willing to continue with Kapil’s show but I’m clueless about when the shoot would resume. We haven’t shot any new episodes in the last couple of days. Let’s see how it goes,” she said.
The Kapil Sharma Show had abruptly gone off air in September last year after he failed to turn up for shoots with Bollywood A-listers leaving them miffed. The channel resumed its association with Kapil with a strict warning to toe the line. But things have gone awry again.
The comedian host remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts to reach him.
