After a five-year break from television, Neha SK Mehta — best remembered for her role in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah — has returned to the small screen with Itti Si Khushi. “I was working on a web project, but that got postponed, and I suddenly found myself with time. That’s when I got a call for this role,” she says, adding, “When I heard the narration, it felt like the universe was giving me a platform to do my net practice before the next innings - my OTT debut.”
Ask her about her long gap and she says, “I did get offers, but I said yes only when something truly resonated with me. I’ve learned not to be greedy for money but good work.”
For years, audiences associated Neha with her portrayal of Anjali Mehta in Taarak Mehta..., a character she played for over a decade. Does she find it hard to break away from that image?
“Not really,” she says. “People still take autographs, calling me Anjali, even on the new set. And I take it as a compliment. That character gave me so much love. But as an actor, you have to keep evolving. Just like in life, you keep changing with time.”
Makers of Taarak Mehta say they reached out to Neha Mehta multiple times regarding settlement of her dues

A couple of days ago, Neha Mehta revealed that she is yet to receive her pending dues from the makers of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. The actress, who played the role of Anjali Mehta in the show for 12 years, quit two years ago. Neha said that she is yet to receive her dues for the last few months that she worked. However, the makers say that they have reached out to her a number of times for her final settlement.
An official statement released by the production house said, “We consider our artiste as our family. We have contacted Neha Mehta multiple times to complete the formalities with us. Unfortunately, she has been reluctant to sign the exit documents without which we cannot do a full and final settlement as per company policy. She also stopped responding to all our communication since the past two years and left the show without meeting us. We wish that she would have replied to our emails instead of making false accusations about the makers, who have given her 12 years of fame and career. We reserve our rights for appropriate action.”
When we reached out to Neha regarding this, she said, “With respect, no comments and God bless everyone. That is it. ”

Neha Mehta, who quit Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) two years ago, says she is yet to receive her pending dues from the makers of the show.
The actress, who recently finished shooting for a Gujarati film, says, “I acted in TMKOC as Anjali Mehta for 12 years before quitting in 2020. The last couple of months’ money is pending. After I quit the show, I called them a few times regarding my pending dues. I don’t like complaining, so I’m hoping that there will be a solution soon and I will get my hard-earned money.”
Post TMKOC, Neha hasn’t bagged another show on TV. She says, “I am waiting for good offers. TV is a great medium and has given me a lot. But I did not want to jump on to another show soon after acting in one for 12 years. I am also focusing on new concepts and working on my own production house. I hope to start work on a web show soon.”
She adds, “The web is a great alternative medium, but it can never replace TV. Television has a mass following and in India, people still enjoy watching TV very much.”
We texted producer Asit Kumarr Modi, but he didn’t revert.

A few days back, Neha Mehta, who played Taarak Mehta’s wife Anjali in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, quit the show, citing personal reasons. The actress talked to BT about her sudden decision to end her journey. She said, “Yes, there were issues, but I believe that sometimes, silence speaks for itself. Also, I felt that I needed to move on and grow. I need to explore other platforms like films and web series. Also, when you become a part of a project for such a long time, you settle into a comfort zone and don’t think of any other opportunities. Over the last few years, I got some interesting offers, but I let them go because I felt this unit was like my family.”Ask her if monetary issues were the reason for her exit and she said, “I would not like to comment on that, but I do feel that in many areas, discipline and decorum was not maintained on the sets. I felt that it was important to exit the show gracefully, without creating any hassles. But, this does not mean that I have no respect for the show or the production house. I had wanted to leave for quite sometime now and it’s a great brand and as our producer (Asit Kumarr Modi) rightly says, the show must go on.”
So, given a chance, would she return to the show in the future? “It has been a 12-year-long journey. I have great respect for Asit Modi sir and if they call me back, I might even consider going back to the show,” she replied.
When we spoke to the producer, he said, “It’s one of the longest running shows on television and if we have reached so far, it has to be teamwork. I have always tried to keep my team members together and work towards the betterment of the show. If certain ego battles arise on the sets, people have to let go off them and emerge as team players. There were no major issues with Neha, but she decided to leave.” Actress Sunayna Fozdar replaced Neha a few days back on the show.
