We are easy targets, so we are trolled-Neha Kakkar

Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; October 16, 2026)

Singing reality shows have often faced criticism over the use of sob stories to manipulate viewers’ emotions, auto-tuning performances and allegations of favouritism towards certain contestants. Neha Kakkar, who has judged several shows and is currently judging I-Popstar Vol 2, defends post-production enhancements.

She says, “Name any singer, and I can tell you that their songs use auto-tune. Almost every singer’s track is processed with it. Think of it as a filter, much like the ones we use on photographs before posting them on social media. There is nothing wrong with enhancing something to make it look or sound better. Contestants sing live, and their performances are enhanced during post-production. That does not mean we are misleading anyone.”

‘Mujhe toh har emotion touch karta hai’
Another criticism Neha frequently faces is that she gets emotional at the drop of a hat, with some questioning whether her tears over contestants’ personal struggles are genuine.

She says, “People on social media who say these things are just rage-baiting to generate views. Unka kaam chal raha hai, toh unko bolne do mere khilaaf. I have gone through a lot in life. Main kahaan se kahaan aayi hoon, aur jab main logon ka pain dekhti hoon, toh main feel kar paati hoon. Maybe others haven’t faced the same challenges or are not as emotionally affected by what people go through. Mujhe toh har emotion touch karta hai.”

‘Hamein trolls se koi problem nahi hoti’
Neha and her brother, singer Tony Kakkar have also faced persistent trolling over their music, particularly their upbeat pop tracks, which are often mocked for repetitive hooks and lyrics that prioritise catchy phrases over depth.

Neha says, “We also do songs like Mile Ho Tum Humko, O Humsafar and Khuda Bhi Jab Tumhe, but people don’t talk about these songs because there is nothing to criticize. They are well-written and sung. The discussion is usually around chatpate gaane because these songs are fun to talk about. People actually go crazy and paaglon ki tarah naachte hain on the songs they troll. Aur hamein mazey karaane mein bahut mazaa aata hai (smiles). We are easy targets, so we are trolled, lekin hamein trolls se koi problem nahi hoti.”

‘I feel terrible when they drag my personal life into it’
While Neha is prepared for criticism of her music, speculation about her personal life is harder to dismiss.

She says, “Mostly, I am prepared. Jab iss tarah ka pop music karte hain, hum gaaliyaan expect karte hain. But I feel terrible when they drag my personal life into it, when they spread pregnancy rumours or say, ‘Neha aur Rohanpreet ka divorce ho gaya hai’. I feel bad about such baseless speculation, but unfortunately, it is part and parcel of being famous. People like to gossip about celebrities.”

Putting the rumours about her marriage to rest, Neha describes her relationship with Rohanpreet Singh as one based on friendship.

She says, “Rohu and I are very happy together. This year, we are completing seven years. Hum isko shaadi maante hi nahi hain, hum isko friendship maante hain aur friendship mein bachche nahi hote (laughs!). Toh hamaara woh pyaar hai. Hum sirf masti karte hain.”

I found it demeaning when I was asked about Indian Idol’s dipping ratings and whether it was scripted-Neha Kakkar

Neha Maheshwri (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 5, 2026)

If not her songs, Neha Kakkar’s statements tend to break the internet. Her recent comments come amid a debate over the authenticity of singing reality shows, after Sunidhi Chauhan questioned how genuine the format remains and spoke about performances being edited or manipulated, as well as makers asking judges to promote specific contestants. Neha was also asked about Indian Idol’s dipping ratings and whether the show’s performance had been affected by her absence.

Neha says, “I found it very demeaning when I was asked about Indian Idol’s dipping ratings and whether it was scripted. I just said, ‘It’s not my fault if it’s not working. Main nahi kar rahi hoon toh nahi chal raha hai toh main kya karu? Main jab karti thi tab toh superhit hi tha’. That’s what happened.”

The singer also weighs in on the use of contestants’ personal struggles and sob stories to influence audiences, arguing that such stories can help viewers understand the journeys behind the performers, as long as they do not overshadow talent.

Neha says, “Majority of people come from middle-class backgrounds, toh unke paas apni journey aur struggles ki stories hoti hain. They don’t own businesses or have the money to release singles or make their own videos, so they turn to platforms and people who can promote them aur unka saath de. If we bring their stories to the forefront, there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, people should know about the challenges they have faced and see how far they have come. Having said that, kabhi bhi talent se badi story toh nahi hoti hai. Talent is always the most important thing and should remain so.”

In the reality-show space, the Kala Chashma singer, who has judged singing reality shows such as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs, the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th seasons of Indian Idol, and Superstar Singer - Season 3, is currently seen as a mentor on I-POPSTAR Vol 2. The show focuses on artistes who write and perform their own music, something she believes is particularly important for independent musicians.

She says, “Independent music has always been very important to me because I have built my career through it. When only a handful of music labels were operating, my brother Tony (Kakkar) and I started our own channel and began creating independent music, which did very well. But for other artistes, it was, and still is, difficult to get their music heard by an audience. That’s where I-POPSTAR comes into the picture. Unlike the other singing reality shows I have been part of, where contestants mostly sing covers, this is the only one where they write, compose and sing their own music. If they are good and their songs are great, no one can stop them from going viral.”

I took a break for my mental and physical health, now I’m back-Neha Kakkar

I took a break for my mental and physical health, now I’m back, says Neha Kakkar

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; February 27, 2024)

Neha Kakkar who was last seen as a judge on the music reality show Indian Idol in 2022, took what she says was a ‘much-needed break.’ The singer known for hits like Kar Gayi Chull, Coca Cola and Aankh Marey says, “This was a much-needed break for me because I was physically and mentally drained. I am someone who gives my all to any show and I have been doing that for a while now. After a point, it was difficult for me to go on doing what I was doing. I was staying low-key for some time because I wanted to take a small break. I have been working in this industry since I was a teenager. So, I needed that break for my mental and physical health. But now I am back with a bang.”

‘I don’t pay attention to rumours’
Last year there were rumours of Neha and Rohanpreet filing for a divorce, however, there was no truth to that. Now there are rumours that the singer is pregnant. Reacting to it, she says, “Since I got married, there have been only two rumours doing the rounds about me – that I am pregnant or getting a divorce. That’s the sad part of being who we are, that people want to gossip about you and to do that they create whatever stories they want. I don’t pay much attention to it, because only I know what the truth is.”

Neha, who is now excited to be back as a judge on the upcoming children’s singing reality show, Superstar Singer 3, tied the knot with Rohanpreet Singh in October 2021. When asked if her focus has shifted from work to family, Neha says, “My focus had shifted to my family and my husband for a while, but now I am back to focusing on myself and my work. My husband deserved all the attention and now that we have completed three years of marriage, I felt it was time to bring focus back to my work. I am made for singing and the work I do, so now I am back to it.”

People who are not emotional may find my tears fake on TV-Neha Kakkar

'Yes I am in depression': Neha Kakkar finding it difficult to cope up post break up with Himansh Kohli?

Hasti Doshi (BOMBAY TIMES; August 21, 2022)

She first came on the reality show Indian Idol as a 16-year-old contestant with dreams in her eyes. She didn’t win, but what could be a bigger achievement than returning to that stage as a judge! We are talking about singer Neha Kakkar, who has been a judge on Indian Idol for the past three seasons and is gearing up for the next.

In an exclusive chat, talking about her journey from being a contestant to becoming a judge on the show, Neha says, “I still feel that I am living in a dream world when I think about it. Even today, when I see a contestant on our show, I see myself in them.”

While Neha is known to be sweet to the contestants, she also tends to get teary-eyed on the show, for which she has even been trolled and called fake. Ask her about this, and she says, “I can’t blame them, there are many people who are not emotional at all! For people who are not emotional, I would seem fake. But people who are sensitive, like me, will understand and relate to me. Today, we don’t see too many people who can feel others’ pain and who want to help them. I have that quality in me and I have no regrets about it.”

Reality shows in recent years have been criticised for showing a lot of drama by focussing on the contestants’ personal lives and struggles. But Neha feels it is an integral part of a show. She says, “I wouldn’t call it drama. There are elements included in a show to make it interesting. Showing just singing and dancing might get boring, so we also focus on the lives of the contestants and their families. Viewers also relate to them. When we show how a contestant has come a long way by sacrificing things, people connect with it because everyone has someone of their own who has been through struggle and achieved things. We are just showing on the show what happens in our homes.”

On the personal front, Neha married Rohanpreet Singh in October 2020 and life has changed since then. She shares. “My life has completely changed after marriage in a good way. Earlier I would be too lost because I was so busy with work all the time. Sometimes I would feel that there was just work and nothing else. But now, my partner makes me laugh, gives me emotional support and when I come back from work, I have something to look forward to. I am really thankful to God for sending him into my life.”

It helps to have a partner from the same field, she says. “He is also a singer and understands my work and I understand his. Things become easy for us. The kind of songs I am doing these days, all the variations that I have added to them, I have learnt from him. He is a much better singer than I am and one day people will know that. I have become a better singer now because of him,” adds Neha.

A while ago, there were rumours about Neha being pregnant, is there any truth to them? “It’s been over a year that there have been rumours! For a song promotion, I had posted a picture and people misunderstood. They assumed I was expecting. No, I am not pregnant and we have no plans to have a baby as of now,” she says.

If you panic, you’ll feel claustrophobic-Neha Kakkar

Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; April 16, 2020)

The Coronavirus pandemic that has called for social distancing has given singer Neha Kakkar the opportunity to spend quality time with her family. But she admits that she misses eating outside. Looking at the brighter side of things, she says, “Industries coming to a halt has led to a decline in air pollution all across the world. Water bodies are cleaner. I hope that after the pandemic ends, we will become more mindful of the environment.”

One thing that has been bothering her is the speed at which fake information about the health crisis is spreading. “My mother is in her 50s and my father is in his 60s. When they hear rumours, they tend to panic. The forwards that we get on WhatsApp are not always true,” Kakkar shares.

She says that the lockdown is taking a toll on people’s mental health but the best way to deal with it is to accept the reality. “Humans can do anything if we decide to do it. It’s all in our head. If you panic, you’ll feel claustrophobic. But if you look at it positively and decide to enjoy this phase by being safe and staying indoors, then you’ll be able to sail through it smoothly,” Kakkar says, adding, “Be with loved ones, learn new things, and sleep well. It’s also a good time for artistes to come up with creative concepts.”

This year or next, I would like to get married-Neha Kakkar

Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 5, 2020)

"I am a human being and I do feel bad. They say I keep crying and I’m a crybaby," says Neha Kakkar, who gets trolled for frequently breaking down on the sets of the music reality show Indian Idol that she judges. Known for her chartbusters, the singer also stresses on the power of social media, and how it was instrumental in making her a star. As she awaits the “biggest high” in her life, she shares her plans of tying the knot soon. Excerpts:

How important is it, today, for a singer to be visible?
For anybody, I feel it’s very important. If somebody wants to be famous, be it a singer or an actor, they have to be visible.

How much do you think social media has helped singers?
If I talk about myself, I would give 50% credit to social media. I started making selfie videos when nobody used to, and they got viral through social media.

What do you prefer more — playback singing, live gigs or independent music?
All three! I always want to do playback singing because I want to sing for the people I like. Live gigs are what I live for. And if we talk about non-film music, I want my songs to be picturised on me.

Earlier, reality shows were like a catalyst for budding singers. How relevant are they today?
Reality shows are the best platform to bring new talent in. I’m one of them! Many of us have come from reality shows, and we can’t blame a reality show for not being successful because they give you a platform. But, after they do so, it’s you who needs to work hard and prove your talent. Luck, of course, also matters.

You’ve been trolled on social media relentlessly. How do you deal with trolls?
Kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna... People don’t know that I feel the pain [of contestants]. I don’t want to tell the whole world, but I feel their pain so much that I help them in ways a well-to-do person can.

You’ve been part of several recreations. What are your thoughts on them?
I’m in favour of them because half of my songs are recreations. These days, people have become so negative that they will dance and listen to the same song, but would write bad about them. I don’t think recreations are bad, but we should always give credit to the original composer and lyricist. The new music composer should get credit as ‘recreated by’.

An artiste in India and the West who you want to collaborate with?
In India, I’ve collaborated with quite a few. From the ones I didn’t yet, I would like to work with Shahid Kapoor in India, and Justin Bieber and Zayn Malik in the West.

What’s the next big plan?
I want to come up with new ideas as far as music videos are concerned. I’ll keep working for all my fans who I call Nehearts. Maybe, if I find the best guy, who I feel is the right one, I’ll get married. May be this year or next year, but I would like to get married.

There will always be someone better than me-Neha Kakkar

Neha Kakkar
Dhaval Roy (DNA; December 5, 2018)

There’s a lot happening in Neha Kakkar’s life. She is not only judging the 10th edition of Indian Idol but has also dropped four non-film singles in the past one month — Nikle Currant with Jassie Gill, Baarish with Bilal Saeed, Zindagi Mil Jayegi and Dil Chahiye — all of which have garnered millions of views on YouTube. Add to that her Bollywood career and live shows. There’s also much buzz as far as her personal life is concerned. Her friendship with Yaariyan actor Himansh Kohli has been the talk of the town, with the two indulging in PDA on television as well as social media, whether it was ‘Neha’s swayamvar’ on her music reality show or cutesy nicknames — Nehu and Heeman — for each other or the duo sharing their cuddly photos. When After Hrs asks the über popular songstress about her ‘bestie’, the question is carefully staved off. But she does talk to us about other things...
Idol talk

After being a contestant on Indian  Idol season 2, and eliminated quickly, Neha occupied the judge’s seat alongside biggies like Vishal Dadlani and Anu Malik, who has now been replaced by Javed Ali, post allegations of sexual harassment by Sona Mohapatra and Shweta Pandit. The La La La (Baazaar) singer says about her new co-judge, “Javed Ali and I judged another singing reality show last year. So, we are friends and pretty well versed with each other’s style of working. So, I welcomed him with open arms. On his part, he slipped into Anu ji’s place smoothly.” As far as elimination of contestants goes, she states, “It does hurt a lot if someone gets eliminated but that’s the part of being a judge on a reality show.”

Emotional in real life
Speaking of hurting, in the initial phase of the show, one saw her weeping at the drop of a hat. In her videos and on social media, she is otherwise seen as a happy girl with a perpetual smile on her face. “I am what you see on screen. I have no pretences or another personality when the cameras roll. I am always ‘me’ everywhere— including off the screen,” she says emphasizing that she is an extremely emotional person.

A big year
2018 has been a great year for Neha, in terms of playback singing as well as singles. “The biggest highlights would definitely have to be Dilbar (Satyameva Jayate) and Indian Idol. Both have been doing exceptionally well,” avers the singer, who also sang Morni Banke in the recently released movie, Badhaai Ho. There have also been as many as six non-film tracks, including La La La with Arjun Kanungo and Oh Humsafar, which garnered a lot of attention also because of her chemistry with Himansh. But, the duo is not recreating the magic anytime soon, as Neha says, “As of now, nothing with Himansh is in the pipeline. If something interesting is offered, I will look into it.”

Another big moment was Sara Ali Khan recently appeared on the show and said that she came for Neha. The vocalist says, “Sara was extremely sweet. It feels nice when your work is appreciated.” As for her fangirl moment, it was with Govinda when the veteran actor visited the set. “I’ve been a big fan of his since I was a child,” Neha avers.

Success and failure
While Neha is riding high on success currently, she is also mindful that there will always be competition at every level. “It keeps me on my toes and makes me go that extra mile. There will always be someone better than me. I am aware and prepared for that. I’ve always believed that if one is talented, one is here to stay. Success and failure are two sides of the same coin — one should focus on the work and the rest will follow. Till then, I am enjoying each moment of my success.”

‘Nothing to hide’
While Neha appreciates the adulation that has come her way, she takes the lack of privacy in her stride. “It’s part of the industry we are in,” Neha reasons, and continues, “Anyway, I am like an open book, so I have nothing to hide.” Her latest release is Chamma Chamma (Fraud Saiyan), a remake of the 1998 hit track from China Gate. “I have lots of songs and shows coming up. Wait and watch!” she concludes.

People see me as this aam ladki jo bahut struggle karke yahan tak aayi hai-Neha Kakkar

Debarati Sen (BOMBAY TIMES; March 5, 2018)

Neha Kakkar is one of the most followed Indian musicians on a photo-sharing platform. Surprisingly, the singer does not attribute her popularity to her singing prowess alone, but to the fact that she is also a positive person, which reflects in her online posts. Says Neha, “I have people come up to me and tell me that they love my cheerful persona and vibe. There are some who tell me that they like to see my smiling pictures every morning. People say that I am like their daughter who has become a star — hamare ghar ki beti hai, jo star ban gayi hai.”

Neha feels that her selfie videos were the ones that helped her gain followers. “Back in 2012, when everyone was into selfie pictures, I did a selfie video in a car. It became popular on social media and went viral when a fan circulated it. My selfie videos have been shared extensively on other social media platforms,” she points out.

The Kala Chashma singer has had back-to-back hits to her credit. “I feel blessed and am grateful that people enjoy my songs. Not just my film music, my singles have been appreciated, too,” says Neha.

The fact that she is a familiar face on the small screen also helps. “People connect with me easily when I am on TV — they see me as this aam ladki jo bahut struggle karke yahan tak aayi hai. I think they love my simplicity,” says Neha.

There is no hit formula to make it big in Bollywood-Neha Kakkar

Neha Kakkar on what drives her to stay ahead of competition, her desire to sing romantic numbers and the controversy between Honey Singh and Badshah
Sonil Dedhia (BOMBAY TIMES; April 22, 2016)

The voice behind songs like Ladki Kar Gayi Chul, Tukur Tukur, London Thumakda and many others, Neha Kakkar has got everyone swooning to her songs. The singer is known for her unconventional voice which gives her an edge over her contemporaries. In a chat with BT she talks about why she is dying to sing romantic numbers and her desire to face the camera. Excerpts:

Does your popularity in singing party numbers limit your potential of trying other genres?
Composers are very confident about me singing dance numbers or party tracks but when it comes to other genres, I think they aren't sure about me as I haven't tried them. I am dying to sing romantic numbers. I want to come out of my comfort zone and try different genres. Singing from the heart is my only goal. I am an entertainer and I would sing a song if I know my voice would do justice to it.

Did the lack of a filmi lineage ever feel like a disadvantage?
I never took it as a disadvantage. In fact, I feel that if my parents would have been singers, then I would have been under constant pressure to prove myself. I am glad that I faced rejections and it was my hard work and perseverance that has got me success.

You have been a part of a reality show.
We have seen very few singers who participate in them have made a successful career. As a viewer, I love to watch reality shows and being a part of the industry, I feel it helps a lot. There are a lot of talented artists in small towns and villages of India and these shows are a huge platform to showcase their talent and bring them to the forefront. Beyond that, only the talent and the determination of the individual helps them to make it big.

So do you think reality shows really launch talents?
Yes, I feel they do. I have been part of one and I am aware that there is very little scope for cheating. There are many singers I see these days, who have not done playback singing but they surely are earning well and leading a good life.

How do you look at competition?
It's a good time to be in the Bollywood music industry. I have always believed in healthy competition and currently, everyone from composers, lyricists and even singers are open to trying out new things. The industry has been forthcoming and many deserving people are getting a chance to showcase their talent.

You said that you believe in healthy competition so how do you keep the energy up without being complacent?
There is no hit formula to make it big in Bollywood. I am aware that I am not going to be here forever and I have accepted this fact gracefully. After me, there is someone who is going to take my seat. My siblings (brother Tony Kakkar and sister Sukruti Kakkar) have been my pillars of strength. I also try to be in sync with the current trend in the industry. You may pull off all the gimmicks in the world, but if you don't perform, you will surely perish. I am aware that I have to deliver consistently to be on top of my game.

Recently, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Badshah were involved in war of words. You have worked with both of them. Did you find anything amiss between them?
I have had a good working relation with both of them. They are both fun to work with. I am not aware of what happened between them but I have always heard good things about Badshah from Honey Singh and vice versa. They have always appreciated each other's work. There have been times when I have heard Badshah talking on phone and saying Honey bhai. I am sure they'll soon sort out their differences and make even better music together.

Any plans of foraying into acting?
I'd love to become an actress someday. In fact, a lot of my fans who watch my selfie videos comment on it asking me to face the camera. At this point I am concentrating on singing, but if a good acting offer comes up then I'll surely consider it.

Honey Singh told me that my voice is like sex-Neha Kakkar

Mohar Basu (BOMBAY TIMES; December 28, 2015)

Neha Kakkar got everyone swooning with Second Hand Jawaani (Cocktail), Dhating Naach (Phata Poster Nikhla Hero) and London Thumakda (Queen), thanks to her unconventional voice and effervescent avatar. The vocalist, who gave her first hit with music composer Pritam, has collaborated with him again for Tukur Tukur, which features in Shah Rukh Khan's recently-released film. The superstar's ardent fan says, “I was so crazy about him that I even did a song for him called SRK Anthem. When I recorded Tukur Tukur, I didn't know it was for his film. I'm over the moon.“

The petite singer is also excited about her new single, Car Mein Music Baja, written and composed by her brother Tony Kakkar. She claims, “It has recorded lakhs of views online within five days of its launch.“

Though Neha has a flair for peppy songs and Manali Trance (The Shaukeens) is her favourite track, she admits she wants to experiment with other genres. “During Sunny Sunny (Yaariyan), Honey Singh told me that my voice is like sex. Dance numbers suit my voice, but I've also done two Punjabi songs, Hanju and Akhiyan, in the soft space,“ she elaborates.

She showed her dance moves, too, in the single, Wedding Da Season, alongside Shilpa Shetty Kundra. “I'm thankful to producer Bhushan Kumar for giving me this chance. I wasn't supposed to dance; but when choreographer Ganesh Acharya saw me perform, he was surprised,“ smiles the artiste.

She was also the first to shoot a selfie video three years ago with her song Bottle Khol. “At that time, it was a rare phenomenon. But I was delighted after Aao Raja's selfie video became successful,“ she signs off.
