Mohit Raina, Konkona Sen Sharma to kick-start shoot for Mumbai Diaries sequel this summer

Medical drama continues

Upala KBR (MID-DAY; April 3, 2022)

Mohit Raina and Konkona Sen Sharma’s medical drama gets the green signal for another season. After the success of Nikkhil Advani’s Mumbai Diaries: 26/11, Amazon Prime Video is keen to keep the story going with multiple seasons.

A source from the creative team informs, “The sequel is expected to go on floors by summer this year in Mumbai. The schedule is being drawn up.”

While the principal cast remains the same, a new story will unfold in the second edition. “The staff of Bombay General Hospital will experience a different crisis in Mumbai this time. All the characters played by Tina Desai, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Satyajeet Dubey, Natasha Bharadwaj, Mrunmayee Deshpande, and Mishal Raheja established in the first edition will continue to be part of the second season,” says the source, and adds that the eight-part series will delve further into the backstory of Dr Kaushik Oberoi and Social Services Director Chitra Das, played by Raina and Sharma respectively.

“We will take a closer look into Dr Kaushik and Chitra’s personal life. Casting director Kavish Sinha is currently scouting for actors to play the new characters that will be introduced in the new season.”

The streaming giant and Advani remained unavailable for comment.

The flipside of nepotism, if one were to argue, is that star kids have the onus of taking ahead their family legacy. So, charting one’s own path becomes all the more important. That’s the note on which we kick off our chat with Mikhail Anand, son of the late Mukul S Anand, director of films like Agneepath (1990) and Khuda Gawah (1992). Mikhail is set to make his directorial debut with the short film, The Dinner Invite, starring Divya Dutta, Natasha Bharadwaj and Parzaan Dastur.

Asked about the learnings from his father that he has used in the film, Mikhail says, “He was relentless in pursuit of his vision; he pushed himself to extreme lengths to achieve it. I want to approach every moment on the set with the same passion and conviction.” The crime comedy was shot in Alibaug on November 18 and 19.

Mukul was all of 45 when he died of a heart attack in 1997. He was in Utah shooting the action film, Dus, which was to feature Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt. The film remained incomplete after his demise. Does he feel the pressure of carrying forward his filmmaker father’s legacy? Mikhail says, “I feel a little pressure following in the footsteps of someone whose stories are so loved and well-remembered, but I view the legacy as a blessing. That’s what I plan to focus on, as I try to create my own legacy.”

Arjun Kapoor wished me on my birthday and spoke to me about the scenes he liked in Mumbai Diaries 26/11-Natasha Bharadwaj

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 16, 2021)

For Natasha Bharadwaj, portraying the role of a first-year resident doctor in the recently released web show Mumbai Diaries 26/11 wasn’t just a professional commitment but had a personal connect as well. The reason, the actor reveals, is her mother, who is a doctor and had treated patients injured in the 26/11 attacks in 2008. And the response she received for her performance, especially from actor Arjun Kapoor, has boosted her confidence further.

“So many people said brilliant things, even those from the medical fraternity. I was extremely happy about was getting a call from actor Arjun Kapoor. He wished me on my birthday and spoke to me about the scenes he liked, how my character moved from one place to another, mentally and emotionally,” the 24-year-old gushes, adding that the appreciation was much-needed.

The actor is glad that the response to the show has been overwhelming, especially because it got her noticed. She stresses on how important it is to achieve that recognition in a competitive field like this. “It’s like kabhi kabhi jo aapke paas nahin hota, you keep it aside. But when you get that validation from the entertainment industry, you feel like haan aap kuchh sahi kar rahe hain. That call from Arjun Kapoor really made my day,” she explains.

Talking about how her mum’s profession helped her prepare for the role, she says, “My mum has worked in so many hospitals, and I’ve been to a lot of them. As a kid, I’d sit in her cabin and look at things under the microscope while she was operating on people. She has also treated those patients in that time of crisis.”

Given how the entire show is based on how the medical community dealt with that traumatic incident of 26/11, Bharadwaj knew she had to consult her mother for the role. “When the shoot started, I actually sat down and spoke to my mum about a lot of things,” she wraps up.
