The Greece islands offer a range of bikinis in vibrant colours-Nargis Fakhri

Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 5, 2016)

Officially called the Hellenic Republic after its historical name Hellas, Greece is the most visited country in the Europe. It is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and Asia. Its capital Athens is the largest city.Ancient Greece is considered the cradle of Western civilisation. This was where democracy took birth, philosophy bloomed and the first Olympic Games was flagged off. Greece's historical legacy is reflected in its 18 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the most in the world. Nargis Fakhri who is no stranger to this country, tells us what fascinates her about the country she has grown to call “a second home“...

FROM TOURIST TO LOCAL
I first visited Greece back in 2007. The eight-day trip turned into a four-month stay. I'd gone as a tourist to Athens and walked through the Acropolis, poured over the exhibits at the Acropolis Museum, toured the Temple of Hephaestus and explored the Parthenon. I was fascinated by the centuries-old cathedrals and roamed the markets. But after I was done with the sightseeing I discovered I didn't want to leave. So I rented a place and signed up with a local modelling agency. I'd take off to the nearby islands for photo shoots for commercials. The money ensured I lived comfortably and could hang out with my new friends. Nine years later, I'm still in touch with a couple of them and attended the wedding of a third, an American girl settled there. The friendships have lasted almost a decade.

SUN AND THE SNOW
I love Greece for its warmth. In summer it's really sunny but I enjoy walking around in the dry heat and swimming in the warm water. The people reflect the warmth of the country. They are caring and nurturing. I get invited to a lot of family dinners. Except for one trip in mid-October, I haven't visited Greece in winter when its wet and chilly. Mountainous areas in the Northwest, like Epirus, Thessaly and Western Macedonia as well as central parts of Peloponnese, get heavy snowfalls. You can go skiing and snowboarding at the ski centre in Mountain Parnassos, two hours from Athens or the Kalavrita Ski Center on Mount Helmos in Peloponessos.

CHANGING TIMES
Except for a three-year break when I was busy with my Bollywood commitments, I have gone back several times. I ended my self-imposed exile just before starting Housefull 3. This year I was there in August. The last few outings have been brief, two-day and four-day breaks. But no matter how short the stay, I've always enjoyed this sunny land and its sunny people. In fact, there are times when I wish I could settle there like my American friend.

Much as I love Greece, I have to admit that it has changed since my first visit. I can see that when I am strolling down the streets. Many of the shops have downed shutters and also some of the clubs where I used to hang out. The ones still around are almost empty, a sad reflection on world economy. I remember how vibrant the country once was when everyone was either clubbing or shopping.

Athens is where the shopping is but being a New Yorker I don't need to go brand-hopping around the globe. In fact, my Greek friends come to my city for shopping. So unless it's something local and traditional like replicas of ancient artifacts, I wouldn't buy anything except beachwear. The islands offer a range of bikinis in vibrant colours.

ISLAND HOPPING
I love the islands, each uniquely different in its own way. Some like Mykonos are the most popular party destinations in the world with the nightlife centred around its beaches like Super Paradise, Paranga and Paradise. Even the historic Rhodes Island and Corfu are great getaways. The Old Towns in both these islands have some chic open-air bars and karaoke nights. Astir Beach or Asteras Vouliagmeni Beach as it is called in Greece, is another favourite with locals and visitors.

The southern most island in the Cyclades chain, Santorini, and Milos are less crowded and quieter. You can be one with unspoilt nature there. Crete, the largest Greek island and home to the legendary Palace of Knossos, is also interesting. You should feast on the local delicacy there-a plate of steamed, fried or grilled snails.

Earlier I liked hanging out at the crowded nightclubs but now I prefer dinner or dessert in one of the rooftop restaurants of Hotel Bretgne, Hotel Safe or Ocean's Basket in Athens which offer an eye-catching view and a sumptuous buffet.

YUMMILICIOUS!
I love the local cuisine which is diverse in both its vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices, from spanakotyropita (spinach and cheese pie) to kreatopita (minced meat pie). They have countless varieties of pitas or savoury pies and the Greek salad drizzled in pure olive oil with chunks of Cheddar is to die for. I also binge on garides saganaki (shrimp in spicy tomato sauce with feta cheese) and mousakka (meat and eggplant casserole) and desserts like baklava have me salivating.

Once when I was shooting a swim wear ad at one of the islands, I watched fresh fish, squid and octopus being caught from the sea, chopped up and cooked right before my eyes. That was one of the most amazing meals I have been served. I'm feeling hungry already and can't wait for another sea-food feast.

I don’t find anybody hot right now-Nargis Fakhri

The fun and quirky Nargis Fakhri says she isn’t attracted to cricketers, co-stars or close friends... just yet
Upala KBR (DNA; May 2, 2016)

It’s refreshing to talk to an actress who is uninhibited. Nargis Fakhri is bright, delightful and fun to interview. She replies to all questions with candour. The actress is busy this year — she has four releases this year alone — Azhar, Housefull 3, Banjo and Dishoom (a cameo) and three films before that. In a candid chat, she talks about playing Sangeeta Bijlani on screen, cricket, relationships and dating.

Have you met the real-life Mohammad Azharuddin?
I met him a couple of times. He’s a very nice person. We talked about regular things, nothing about the film or his life. I haven’t met Sangeeta Bijlani or Naureen. He is the only person I have met who is connected to the film. I didn’t take any inputs from him. We spoke about Hyderabad, the history of the city and the forts there as I love history.

What made you accept this role?
I enjoy watching documentaries and biopics, so I found the script interesting. I like to gain knowledge and learn about things that happened in history. I always joke that we humans are nosy because we like to know about other people’s business and their personal lives. Azhar was interesting to me because I didn’t know anything about him and when people would tell me stories about him, there was so much emotion attached to it. I found it interesting that after all these years, people were still so emotional about what had happened. So for me, to know that it was a true story based on events in this great cricketing icon’s life, made it really interesting and I wanted to be a part of it.

What fascinated you about Sangeeta’s character?
The glam factor. She’s so glamorous even to this day. I don’t even know how she stays so beautiful. I want to know her secret so I hope to meet her one day and when I do, I will ask her about her health and beauty secrets (laughs). Apart from the glam factor I am very curious about humans and relationships. I always ask questions to people who are married or divorced or dating about how their relationships work, what are their troubles because I want to know. The one thing that we all want to find is to live happily ever after but I think that’s maybe not a reality. So it’s very interesting to see Azhar’s love story unfold and at the same time see how it is when the other person gets left behind or to understand the human process of why we fall in love with someone else, why love ends for another... Azhar is the journey of love, of the ups and downs of love.

Who did you feel sympathy for — Naureen or Sangeeta?
I feel sympathy for both the characters because I can understand being left behind and I can understand being in love. When you are in love you can do crazy things and you don’t realise what you are doing and you try your best to be proper and a good human being but it’s not always possible. Things are not always in black and white. It can’t always be this-is-this and this is how it has to be. A great part of the story is that this great cricketer, a top actress and this regular woman are all so human. Whether one is a sports star, a movie star or a housewife, it doesn’t matter as we all have emotions, we are all humans.

If you were caught in an elevator with Sangeeta Bijlani and Salman Khan what will you do?
I don’t know maybe I would get really shy… I am a very shy person actually so I am really not that funny but since I know Salman and he has a great sense of humour, he would probably say something funny to me and I can say something funny back. I am sure Sangeeta has a great personality and they are good friends so who knows (laughs)? It all depends on how long we are all stuck in the elevator!

Most relationships between actresses and cricketers don’t work, agree?
My thoughts are that if you look at every human being on this planet and every relationship you will see the same thing. The problem is that the regular people are not in the news and in the public eye. That’s the difference. I think it has more to do with humans than with what you are. An athlete or an actress doesn’t see each other so often and both have their own lives, a ton of money and they need anybody. In relationships, while usually two people stay together out of love, sometimes they also stay together for the wrong reasons too because one person is dependent on the other. I love the fact that women have more independence today to opt out of a relationship which they have outgrown. I don’t think being in the public glare has to do with anything. It just makes more news.

Do you see yourself dating a cricketer?
I would say no right now because you just never know what life gives you. Never say never. I just feel that because my life is so hectic right now I would want more of a stable person. Cricketers lead erratic lifestyles as actresses so I would need an anchor to keep me rooted.

Who is the hottest cricketer?
Nobody. I don’t find anybody hot right now. I haven’t really looked. I am not in the head space as there’s so much work happening and promotions. I am thinking of getting these promotions over with, getting Banjo done and then me taking a vacation.

Sachin Tendulkar or MS Dhoni, which biopic you’d like to see?
Cricket is not my forte, I don’t like any sports in fact, I just enjoy every sport whenever friends or boyfriends take me to a game. I never followed any sport nor am I a sports person. When everyone asks me about it, I feel strange because I feel everyone loves sports and I don’t really have an attachment to any one particular sport. I don’t follow an athlete or movie star or musician for that matter. I’ve met MS Dhoni so I would have to say that maybe I will watch his biopic. I met him during an ad shoot and found him to be a lovely guy. He’s young, family-oriented, very normal and down-to-earth and easy to get along with. Dhoni’s not a very talkative person but he’s a nice guy.

Would you endorse an IPL cricket team?
Yes, why not? The more I get involved with stuff that has to do with cricket, the more I learn because then I am around people who talk about it. I wouldn’t mind… I have gone for some IPL matches yet I still get confused (laughs).

Recently you said you felt uncomfortable kissing Emraan Hashmi because his moustache could have been made from pubic hair.
Oh gosh! I have a bit of toilet humour. I have a potty mouth, I am sorry. Everybody has a different sense of humour I guess. Yes, I have to admit that Emraan’s moustache was really weird (laughs) and it was creeping me out. It looked like one of one of those pervert moustaches which peeping Toms sport which you see on American TV. I was like wondering how do they make these things because the hair is a weird type of hair so I would think, ‘Eeeww it’s not very nice feeling and looking!’

You have a very quirky sense of humour. Where does it come from?
A lot of people made fun of me when I was growing up in New York and you develop a sense of humour to laugh at yourself. Kids are mean when they are young. I was chubby and I couldn’t dance very well so everyone made fun of me. Now I can tell people ‘Look at me now! I can dance! Screw everyone!’ I never fit in as I was always the outsider. I was never a part of gangs and cliques that kids form. I don’t like to be grouped into something. I was always everyone’s friend but no one’s friend. Also, when kids start drinking and doing other naughty things that I didn’t want to do, that was the another thing that pushed me away from them. So I spent a lot of time alone and that’s when I developed my sense of humour. It may seem cool now but as a kid it’s not because then you are struggling and sad thinking nobody is your friend and you are all alone.

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 29, 2015)

She was last seen in Bollywood in a dance number in Salman Khan's Kick, but Nargis Fakhri seems to be getting more visibility overseas. The Rockstar actress made her global red carpet debut in London on Thursday at the premiere of her Hollywood debut Spy, which stars Jude Law, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy.

She posed up a storm in a plunging red number but the actress told Mirror that her ravishing entry was preceded by bouts of anxiety. by bouts of anxiety. “I was worried about my look for the red carpet. Even though I was keen to wear an Indian designer, I had international options from my London stylist to choose from. To be able to walk down the red carpet with such big names like Jude and Melissa is definitely something I could not have imagined. As a young girl, I'd daydream about it and then forget it. But it actually happened,“ said Nargis.

After the premiere, the cast headed to the after-party at the upscale Quagnilo hotel in Mayfair. “It was the classiest party that I have ever been to. It was a full house and everyone from the cast showed up. And even though I had a hectic day of interviews, I had a great time letting my hair down,“ she revealed. Would she say that she's become friends with the starry cast Jude Law and Melissa McCarhty? “They are all lovely people and so easy to be around, so you feel like friends for sure. Between all the craziness, was there a moment that she'll remember the most? “I think the moment I was being interviewed and I looked up and my face was on that huge screen and it was streaming live on an online portal. That for me will be most memorable because it is one of those things that every star lives for,“ said the actress.

You are what you eat, say and do-Nargis Fakhri

Nargis Fakhri lauds the dna ICan Marathon initiative for celebrating and empowering womanhood
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; February 25, 2015)

Nargis Fakhri has not participated in a marathon so far, but feels that it is great from a goal-setting point of view. “You need to work towards building up stamina and speed management. Health benefits are, of course, great bonuses,” she says flashing a grin.

The leggy beauty loves running, especially outdoors. Don’t be surprised if you find her jogging across hilly terrains or parks. Not in Mumbai though! “In a city, I am limited to running on the treadmill at the gym. I ensure I at least do a 30- or 40-minute run on the treadmill,” says Nargis. Not only is it a part of her exercise regime, it also serves as a break for the actress who catches up on her favourite music and films on the treadmill.

While running gives her the kickstart to spring into action mode, Nargis combines it with other elements like yoga and zumba. Her fitness mantra is simple. “You are what you eat, say and do. Healthy eating, positive words/thoughts and forward and determined movement are all important and ascertain your state of being,” she says.

Her message to the women who will be participating in the marathon is: Practise a lengthy jog to keep the heart rate steady and get the breathing right. She also urges them to work on increasing speed and distance and finding a way to manage it effectively.

“Running is probably the only time we as people and especially, women get time to be ourselves without a care in the world. Having an initiative like the ICan Marathon, that not only makes this a competitive endeavour celebrating womanhood but also builds a worthy cause of empowering them, is fantastic. My best wishes to the entire team behind it and all the participants for the marathon on March 8,” she signs off.
