We must cater to the masses, like the South film industry does-Sanjay Dutt
7:53 AM
Posted by Fenil Seta

Vinay MR Mishra (BOMBAY TIMES; October 24, 2024)
The actor, who has been in the industry for over four decades, admits his passion for acting has kept the fire in him burning. At 65, Sanjay Dutt, who has a packed shooting schedule, says, “An actor’s passion doesn’t die. It’s the passion that keeps you going.”
‘Filmmaking has become more professional now’
With a career spanning decades, the KGF - Chapter 2 actor has witnessed the evolution of storytelling from the raw, unbridled energy of yesteryear filmmakers to the sleek, tech-savvy makers of today.
Sanjay Dutt says, “Filmmaking has become more professional. Earlier, there used to be a lot of bonding. There used to be so much interaction between the whole unit and the actor. The entire atmosphere used to be different. Now one gives a shot and then goes back to their vanity vans, but I understand that you have to move with the times. However, I like the way it was those days, back then our heart was at work.”
‘Picture chale na chale, the audience should like your work’
With around 140 films to his credit, Sanjay confesses that box office matters, but he isn’t really seeking the kind of validation that comes with box office numbers. He explains, “After a while, you pass that stage of looking for validation. Box office and critics are important, but the audience is paramount. Picture chale na chale, the audience should like your work. I still look for good roles. For an actor, performance is very important. All the characters we play should be appreciated by the audience, and for me, that is the biggest reward.”
‘I don’t think it is important for me to be everywhere’
Ask him why he engages so little with the media and his fans on digital platforms, and he says, “The world has moved on. Back in the day, we had the magazine culture. There used to be a certain relation and equation with the journalists – and there were few. We bonded with them. Now, everything is digital. I don’t find the need to be digitally important. I don’t think my presence there is important every time. You lower your value as an actor (if you are out there too much). An actor should be wanted, the audience should want to see you. If you are seen every two days, then what is the point?”
‘Bollywood must cater to the audience, like the South film industry does’
Talking about the kind of roles he desires, Sanjay admits he wishes to continue being a massy actor. “I have always been a mass-oriented actor, I am a massy actor. That is exactly what I want to be - massier. I am not saying the other kinds of cinema are bad, but 90% of our audience are the masses. We must cater to them, like the South film industry does. They have not forgotten to be massy. Yahan pe thoda gadbad hogayi hai. But I believe that we (Bollywood) will bounce back,” he says.
‘I haven’t got any OTT offers yet’
Ask him why he has refrained from entering the OTT space and he replies, “Honestly, I haven’t got any OTT offers yet. I am open to it, but it depends on the role.”
‘I am tired of asking Raju about Munna Bhai’
No interview with Sanjay could be complete without asking him whether Munna Bhai will return to the big screen? “Woh Raju Hirani (filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani) se puchiye. I am also tired of asking him when he would revive Munna Bhai,” he signs off.
Rajkumar Hirani has 3 scripts for Munna Bhai 3 which are brilliant, but there are some glitches-Arshad Warsi

HINDUSTAN TIMES (June 26, 2023)
Fans of the Munna Bhai franchise may be in for a heartbreak. Actor Arshad Warsi, in a recent interview, hinted that the much anticipated third instalment of the films “may not happen”.
Calling it the “weirdest thing”, the 55-year-old told India Today, “We have a director (Rajkumar Hirani), who wants to make it, a producer, who wants to produce it, an audience, who wants to see it, actors, who want to act in it and still it is not happening.”
In the film co-starring Sanjay Dutt in the titular role, Warsi essayed the role of his best friend and confidante, Circuit, that went on to become one of the most popular characters in the franchise that comprises Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006).
Elaborating on the probable reason behind the delay, the actor shares, “Raju is insanely perfectionist. He has three scripts, which are brilliant, but there are some glitches. Till the time he’s not 100-200% sure of the script, he won’t start it. When you ask him, he will say, ‘Yes, never say no... Main kar raha hoon. Ek baar script fix ho jaaye’. Once he crosses that stage, he will (hopefully) start [shooting].”
I won’t ever make a substandard Munna Bhai-Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Having released Unscripted that revolves around his journey in movies, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra turns attention to hit comic caper; hopes to have script ready by the year-end
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; February 4, 2021)
We have all been witness to Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 44-year career as he gave Hindi film industry gems in Parinda (1989), 1942: A Love Story (1994) and 3 Idiots (2009), among others. For those who wondered about the behind-the-scenes magic that led to the creation of these movies, the filmmaker has released Unscripted, a book that features anecdotes from his life and career.
“We never intended to write it [so soon],” begins Chopra about the book that has been designed as conversations between long-time collaborator Abhijat Joshi and him. “These are chats that Abhijat and I had over five years back. We had thought of turning it into a book some day. When Nasreen Munni Kabir [TV producer] came for the subtitles of Shikara [2020], she was fascinated with it and helped us put the book together.”
In the book, Chopra has reflected on how he steered clear of commercial film tropes to develop stories that he believed in and emerged one of the most successful producers in Bollywood. “The idea behind [the endeavour] is to inspire young filmmakers. I want them to understand that they don’t have to sell their souls to be successful here.”
On the work front, reports suggest that the third instalment of his hit franchise, Munna Bhai, is off the table. Quiz him on it, and he asserts that the comedy is in the works. “We have not made the third Munna Bhai because I am not happy with the script yet. Abhijat and Raju [Rajkumar Hirani] are working on the script. Hopefully, we’ll have a script by the year-end. I never said I won’t make the film. I said I won’t ever make a substandard Munna Bhai.”

A look at what had been keeping Sanjay Dutt busy and the plans hit for a six by his medical break
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 15, 2020)
Last Tuesday, following rumours that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer, Sanjay Dutt announced that he was taking a short break from work for some medical treatment. “With your love and good wishes, I will be back soon! (sic),” he promised.
The 61-year-old actor has been among the busiest in B-Town in the last two years, with releases like Bhoomi, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3, Kalank, Prassthanam and Panipat. He has two films releasing on OTT soon. Films like Bhuj: The Pride of India, KGF Chapter 2: Kolar Gold Fields, Shamshera and Prithviraj are work-in-progress. Mirror checks their status.
K.G.F. : Chapter 2: Kolar Gold Fields
Sanjay Dutt plays the bad man, Adheera, who takes on Yash’s Rocky in the sequel to the 2018 Kannada action film. He has some shooting left for the film which was to wrap up by April 2020 before the Coronavirus-triggered lockdown hit all plans for a six. Karthik Gowda, executive producer of KGF 2, says, “Though we’re 20 days away from completion, we have only two to three days of shoot left with him (Sanjay Dutt). It’s not a very important scene and manageable for us. But the dubbing still remains and we will do it soon. I spoke to him the other day and he is keeping well, there is nothing to worry.”
Bhuj: The Pride Of India
The true-life period drama, set against the backdrop of 1971 Indo-Pak war, Bhuj features Sanjay Dutt as Ranchordas Savabhai Rabari aka Pagi, who helps Sonakshi Sinha’s Sunderben lead a team of 300 Gujarati village women, rebuild the Bhuj airstrip overnight after it’s bombed by the enemy. This act of grit and courage helped the Indian Air Force counter the enemy attack. Ajay Devgn plays Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, who was given the charge of getting the airstrip operational during the war. The film is almost complete, with just around 10 days of patchwork and some dubbing remaining. Sanju has completed shooting but is yet to dub for it.
Shamshera
Real life Sanju teams up with reel life Sanju, Ranbir Kapoor, in another period film, Shamshera. Set in the 19th century, it has Ranbir as a dacoit who takes on the British Raj with Sanjay in a negative role again, as Shudh Singh. The Karan Malhotra directorial has been wrapped up with only a week-long patchwork shoot remaining with Ranbir. However, while Sanju has finished shooting for this period-drama, his dubbing for the same is pending.
Prithviraj
This period drama has Akshay Kumar in the titular role, with Sanjay, too, playing a pivotal part. While some reports suggest that he plays the character of Prithviraj’s uncle, some others claim that he plays the role of Jaichand, the father of his lady love Sanyukta. The actor has shot for 10-14 days with Akshay in Jaisalmer. The shoot was halted mid-way in March in the wake of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The team is expected to resume work by November in Mumbai. The film also marks the acting debut of Manushi Chhillar.
Projects yet to take off
In an interview with Mirror last year (September 10, 2019) Sanjay and wife Maanayata had revealed some home productions, including a Sanjay Puran Singh directorial, titled Pandit Galli Ka Ali. He was to team up with Rishi Kapoor with whom he had worked in many films. The veteran actor passed away this year on April 30. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018.
There’s also a horror comedy, Virgin Tree, directed by ad-filmmaker Siddhant. “It has Sanju play a virgin baba,” Maanayata had informed.
The actor was also supposed to reunite with his Circuit, Arshad Warsi. The film in question was not Munnabhai 3 which has been in the news for years now, but a comedy revolving around a blind don and his eyes. There’s no clarity on when the Munna Bhai franchise will get going again, though the script is supposed to be locked.
He is also said to be doing a film titled Doghouse with Samir Karnik. It’s a comedy set in Punjab.
Bhumi Pednekar is the female Aamir Khan-Arshad Warsi

Arshad Warsi opens up on his career’s first spookfest, Golmaal 5 and Munnabhai 3, and silently dabbling in art of a different kind
Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 14, 2020)

Arshad Warsi admits that he loves being home so much, Anees Bazmee once called to point out that the Coronavirus lockdown shouldn’t make any difference to him. His life hasn’t changed much. He is getting narrations on video calls and it’s work as usual, with him enjoying himself hugely. The actor will next be seen in the Bhumi Pednekar-starrer Durgavati. Their last schedule had just wrapped up when all hell broke loose. Arshad, who plays a politician with grey shades, goes on to rave about his dedicated leading lady. “Bhumi is the female Aamir Khan. She will keep on giving retakes till she is satisfied. Durgavati is a really good but difficult film for an actress. This girl has gone to hell and back while the film was being shot,” he shares.
Meanwhile, Rohit Shetty confirmed to Mirror (November 30, 2019) that he is returning with the fifth instalment of the Golmaal franchise. Quiz Arshad, who plays Madhav, on the series, and he says on this film’s set, everybody just knows what to do. “I believe they are scripting currently. It will be crazy fun, I’m waiting for a narration. The madness of the characters and the fun we have making the film is what brings people in,” he reasons, equally gung-ho about Munnabhai 3. Any updates, you ask Circuit, and he remarks, “I know what everyone else knows. The idea is to make it, when and how is still to be figured out. I’m happy to do the film because people like it, but personally, I want to move on to new things.”He is kicked about one big budget film. “I’m also excited about a horror film being directed by Samir Tewari, with whom I collaborated on Mr Joe B Carvalho earlier. I have not done horror before, but this story grabbed my attention. It is scary and unpredictable till the last shot,” he promises, certain that things will change after the lockdown. “All the backlog of this year and next year will pile up in 2021. Shooting’s going to be tough, it will take time for things to get back to normal.”
He recently introduced the Instagram world to Arshad, the painter. Shyly, he informs that not many know that he has been painting for a while. “I used to paint a lot before, then, I stopped. Recently, I started again, and have been engrossed since. I hang up all my paintings in a small gallery at home and friends come to pick whatever they like,” he laughs. On May 2, his daughter Zene turned 13. The celebrations aren’t over yet. “My daughter celebrates her birthday for days with multiple parties. She has kept count and told us that we owe her a number of parties for when she can step out,” he says fondly, adding that even the lockdown celebration was a hoot. “She cut three cakes—in the morning, afternoon and evening, and was on video calls with her friends. She still expects a party after the lockdown,” he sighs.
Initially, I was a little apprehensive about working in Pagalpanti-Arshad Warsi

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; November 17, 2019)
Arshad Warsi, who has been a part of comedy franchises like Golmaal and Dhamaal, is all geared up for the release of yet another multi-starrer comic caper — Pagalpanti. “Working on multistarrers is like attending a party. When so many creative people come together, they bring a lot of fun to the table. I enjoy every bit of it,” says the actor.
While the actor is now happy that he’s a part of Pagalpanti, he was skeptical, initially. He shares his reasons, “I was apprehensive about working with Anees Bazmee (director) for the first time. As a director, he has worked with all the biggies, and I felt that he would tell his actors, ‘Do what I tell you to do!’ The other reason was that the film had a three-month schedule in London. The project has actors like Ileana (D’Cruz) Pulkit (Samrat), Kriti (Kharbanda) and Urvashi (Rautela), who I have never worked with. I was only familiar with John (Abraham), Anil (Kapoor) and Saurabh (Shukla). My problem was, when you are shooting with so many actors and that too, on a lengthy schedule abroad, it’s important to get along with everyone.”
However, to Arshad’s surprise, reality was completely different. “I enjoyed working with Anees, and I fell in love with Pulkit and Kriti. They are absolutely adorable,” says Arshad, whose friendly chemistry with Ileana was also evident during the promotions of the film. “Ileana is a sweetheart. We have gotten along really well,” he says.
Post Pagalpanti, Arshad says that he will be working on Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal 5. He shares, “Discussion is also on around other franchises like Ishqiya and Jolly LLB.” Ask him when is the much-awaited Munna Bhai series rolling and he is quick to add, “Frankly, the scripting is taking a lot of time. We all want the third installment of Munna Bhai to happen. It is lovely that the audience is looking forward to seeing it. In fact, many people have asked me about it, too.”
Arshad, who played Circuit in the series, says that he is in touch with ‘Munna Bhai’ Sanjay Dutt and is happy that very soon, they will start shooting for another film together. “We’ll start shooting for it next year,” he says. The Sajid-Farhad project has Sanjay playing the role of a blind don, while Arshad plays his chaperon.
Through his movies, Arshad Warsi has often showcased his love for comedy. His costars speak highly of his comic timing, hilarious impromptu reactions and his wacky sense of humour. So, we threw a volley of silly questions at him to enjoy his wit.
Here’s how he fared:
What was the last text message your Pagalpanti co-star Anil Kapoor might have sent and to whom?
He might have sent a message to himself that reads, ‘I am rocking it. I am the best!’
If Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt had to attend a Halloween party, what look would they pull off the best?
I think they would look the best as The Addams Family!
How many bikes does your co-star John Abraham have?
Whenever I ask him, he says that he owns only about five-six bikes, but I am sure the number is close to 20!
If Shah Rukh Khan had to be represented by a thing, what would it be?
It would be the Eiffel Tower. He is someone, who you just want to look at and admire. Everything that he does is unbelievable. He is a wonderful person.
What’s the most stale item in your refrigerator right now?
The stalest thing in my refrigerator will be meat or fish. In my family, everyone has given up on non-vegetarian food. So, some salmon must be lying there, which needs to be thrown out.
If not an actor, what would Taimur Ali Khan be when he grows up?
Whatever he becomes, he will always be a good-looking dude.
If Katrina Kaif is to marry a cartoon character, who would it be?
I think she should get married to Batman. They will look good together.
Where is Karan Johar vacationing right now?
The way Karan is looking right now (fit and healthy), I am sure he is at some spa in Austria. I think he is probably living there because he is getting slimmer.

Arshad Warsi on making the best of opportunities, doing more comedies than ever and why he won’t produce a film but direction is on the cards
Hiren Kotwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 7, 2019)
Pagalpanti is your first Anees Bazmee directorial. He wrote your earlier film, ShortKut: The Con Is On, which was helmed by the late Neeraj Vora. Why did it take so long for you two to collaborate as actor and director?
I’ve always wanted to work with him, but I was hesitant because he seemed like a serious director to me, someone who might slap me if I tried to improvise. Fortunately, he was more than happy when I managed to improve a scene here or there while working on this film. After Raju (MunnaBhai series director Rajkumar Hirani), Anees bhai is the first director who gave me the freedom to act.
While you worked with Anil Kapoor in Total Dhamaal earlier this year, you’re reuniting with John Abraham after 12 years since Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal.
I love Anil’s energy and attitude. He is such a lovely guy. I also enjoy working with John. More than an actor and a personality, it’s the person that matters. We used to have our motorcycle chats. Working on this film gave me four new friends. Anees bhai is one, and I’d love to work with him again. I’ve grown crazily fond of Ileana (D’Cruz), she’s adorable. So are Pulkit (Samrat) and Kriti (Kharbanda), who are wonderful people.
What’s next after Pagalpanti?
Nothing finalised yet. I’m just reading scripts, I’ve found some subjects interesting. There’s a lot that is happening, but I don’t know which one will start first. Nonetheless, I have a busy next year.
You’ve been an important part of some big franchises. What’s the status on Munnabhai 3?
Raju is working on the second half of the script. To be honest, I have given up, but Raju is not giving up, Vinod (Vidhu Vinod Chopra, producer) has not given up, Abhijat (Joshi, writer) has not given up. Whenever they are ready, Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) and I will be ready, too.
What about the third Ishqiya? Have you heard from (director) Abhishek Chaubey?
I really want Ishiqya 3 to happen. I’m fond of the franchise and not just because I’m a part of it. It is not a regular film. For a film to stand out in today’s times, when hundreds are being made, Ishqiya is a huge achievement. I met Vishal Bhardwaj (producer) a few days ago and we got chatting. Even he is keen on another instalment. Jaya Mishra has a script, which I think, Vishal will listen to and decide.
Your performance in films like Sehar and Jolly LLB received a lot of acclaim. Ever wonder why you haven’t been offered more such subjects than comedies and entertainers?
Comedies are more saleable, and the returns are good. And honestly, I don’t get offered serious, intense roles or subjects. I either don’t like the offers I get, or they are too serious and depressing. I wish someone would come up with something like Sehar, Jolly LLB, Irada.
Naseeruddin Shah once called you the best all-round actor of this generation, while Vidya Balan had said that you remind her of great European actors who can fit into any role. But you are completely under-utilised. Comment.
I’m thankful to both of them for that. They are both brilliant actors and it feels great that they consider me to be in that space. I wish filmmakers utilised me better, I do feel that I can do more than what I’m doing. I’m making the best of the opportunities that are coming my way.
Ever thought of giving production another chance after Hum Tum Aur Ghost?
I’d like to, but it’s such a tough job. I’m a terrible businessman and production is a hard task. It takes a certain kind of mindset to be a producer, I don’t have that.
What about direction?
I will direct, 100 per cent, sooner or later. It may not be a comedy, but it will be entertaining for sure. I don’t want people to come and feel depressed, I want them to have a great time. Whenever I direct, it will be something entertaining.

#MeToo effect: Fox Star Studios puts Munnabhai 3 on hold till Rajkumar Hirani given clean chit?

In wake of sexual assault allegations against Rajkumar Hirani, sources claim Fox Star have indicated comedy on hold till director given clean chit
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; January 14, 2019)
EEven as sexual harassment allegations against Rajkumar Hirani surfaced yesterday, those in the know indicate that Vinod Chopra Films and Fox Star India sprung into action as soon as the survivor accused the filmmaker, in an e-mail addressed to Sanju producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra in November.
Sources suggest that in light of the allegations, Fox Star India — though bound by a three-film deal with VVC Films — has conveyed to the latter it will bow out of the partnership if the studio continues to collaborate with Rajkumar Hirani Films. This implies that Munnabhai 3, which is currently in the pre-production stage, will be put on hold.
A source from Star India reveals, "In a meeting in late December, it was decided that Fox would pull the plug on Munnabhai 3 if Hirani was found guilty. The studio stands in solidarity with the survivor. VVC Films too has taken the matter seriously, and dropped Hirani's name from the promotional material of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga."
Though rumours suggested that Star India was to set up an enquiry against Hirani, the company is not in a position to take action since the alleged incident extended beyond Sanju's release. "An ICC set up by VVC Films will investigate the matter. Munna Bhai 3, however, by default, is on hold till Hirani gets a clean chit."

It's evidently a reason to celebrate then as Arshad Warsi reiterates in a chat with mid-day that the third instalment of Rajkumar Hirani's comedy is in the works
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; November 14, 2018)
Even with an assortment of projects coming their way, Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi's return to the much-loved Munna Bhai franchise remains a constant subject of discussion. It's evidently a reason to celebrate then as Warsi reiterates in a chat with mid-day that the third instalment of Rajkumar Hirani's comedy is in the works.
"Hirani told me he is working on Munna Bhai 3. We all know that he is particular about his films and takes his own time to write them. He doesn't rush into anything, so let's wait for an official announcement," says Warsi. Even though his date diary hasn't been blocked for the film, Warsi says he knows Hirani's team is developing it. "We plan to begin [working on it] towards the end of next year."
While he awaits the commencement of the Dutt starrer, Warsi is currently looking forward to his next, Bhaiaji Superhit, which features Sunny Deol in the leading role. He will also make his web debut with Asura, a psychological thriller that explores the world of forensic science against the mystical mythology of Benaras. "I have only recently joined the project, but this is one role that I was looking forward to. I am doing such an intense part after Sehar [2005]. It is a gripping drama."
Rajkumar Hirani-Sanjay Dutt to team up for Munnabhai 3 next

DNA (April 25, 2018)
Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is all set to helm the third instalment of the highly-entertaining Munna Bhai franchise with Sanjay Dutt. Incidentally, the filmmaker was penning its script when the latter started sharing with him the story of his life. The filmmaker got so engrossed with the star’s journey that he decided to capture it on celluloid and started writing his biopic, Sanju, along with Abhijat Joshi instead.
Interestingly, even the actor joked about it to Aamir Khan. Raju tells us, “Once, when Sanjay met Aamir, he told him, ‘Raju Munna Bhai nahin likh raha hai, meri kahaani likh raha hai. And the latter joked, ‘Tumne usko batayi kyun? Usko woh zyada interesting lagi hogi.’” However, now that the teaser of Sanju is out and the writer-director is gearing up for the film’s release on June 29, Munna Bhai 3 is definitely next on his mind. As he himself confirmed, “I have to work on that now.”
It might be recalled that a few years ago, after the success of Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, speculations were rife that Raju would team up with Sanjay for Munna Bhai Chale Amerika while Arshad Warsi would reprise his role as Circuit in it. In fact, its teaser also released in 2007. However, that idea didn’t work out. We hear the filmmaker is now working on a novel subject that he’s excited about.
Munnabhai 3 to roll out in 2018, confirms Sanjay Dutt

Munnabhai's fans can
rejoice. Bombay Times has learnt that the third instalment of the
franchise will go on floors immediately after the Sanjay Dutt biopic in
2018. Director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra have
finalised a concept, which will be discussed with the actor shortly.
Sanjay, who completed the final leg of his jail term early this year,
is mighty excited about the project. He shares, “We have a concept in
place already. Raju and Mr Chopra are working on the script. We'll
start Munnabhai 3 immediately after the biopic wraps up. I'm also
looking forward to that film because it's extremely special for me.“
The first two instalments of the franchise - Munnabhai MBBS (2003) and Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), are among Sanjay's most successful films. Does he feel any pressure when returning to the series? The actor says, “Mr chopra doesn't give a go-ahead to any project till he is fully satisfied. There have been talks for a while now, but I understand why Raju and he aren't hurrying. They want to better Lage Raho's standard, which will take a lot of effort. Agreed, that it's a franchise that people will love to see every year but practically, we can't do that because we have to have a solid story. And cracking that takes a while.“

Six months since release from jail, Sanjay Dutt still finds himself out of work?

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; September 5, 2016)
Sanjay Dutt walked free from prison on February 25 this year and Bollywood was eagerly awaiting his comeback. But, six months down the line, the actor hasn’t shot a single frame for any of his “comeback” films.
With nothing in hand currently, Dutt has instead been logging airmiles, Poland being the latest destination on his itinerary.
Even before his release from Pune’s Yerwada jail, there was talk about several filmmakers being in queue to sign Dutt and speculation over which one he would greenlight first. He chose Siddharth Anand’s action flick, but later did a rethink and opted out. The actor then decided to turn his focus to his next project, Marco Bhau, directorial debut of filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s sister, Shelly. This project, too, is taking a while to take off. Initially, it was slated to go on the floor by the end of the year. But, if the grapevine is to be believed, things will not roll before February 2017.
Says a source, “There was great excitement in the fraternity when Dutt walked free. But sadly this has not translated into film offers for the star. Currently, except for Marco Bhau, whose story and screenplay is still being worked on, he has nothing in hand except for the long-in- the-planning Munnabhai 3. But with Rajkumar Hirani busy with the biopic of Dutt starring Ranbir Kapoor, part three of Munnabhai will take time.”
As reported, ‘Why did Sanjay Dutt let go his comeback film?’ (hitlist, July 4), Dutt was unhappy after going through the final draft of Anand’s film. The plot reminded him of several Hollywood flicks; he felt it was a mish-mash of Captain Phillips (2013), The Jackal (1997) and Under Siege (1992). He did not want his comeback to be labelled a rehash of Hollywood films. Not wanting to take any chances, he moved on to Chopra’s production, Marco Bhau. Dutt, however, at that time, had maintained that Siddharth’s film was not shelved and he needed more time to prep for action-intensive scenes.
He had even undergone martial arts training for the film under the guidance of Shifu Kanishka Sharma, who specialises in commando close quarter combat. The star had been training at the gym of his Pali Hill home. But as soon as he opted out, he stopped his training programme as well. Dutt’s spokesperson says, “He is in no rush to sign films. He is keen to spend time with family and travel. And Marco Bhau was always slated to take off after December.”

Director Abhishek Chaubey has finally found a script
for Ishqiya 3. This means Babban (Arshad Warsi) and Khalujaan
(Naseeruddin Shah) will return for some more quirky action.
Arshad confirms the development. “Yes, we are in talks. Hopefully, Ishqiya 3 will be happening soon. Sometime next year, maybe.” With this, Arshad’s plate will be full with four of his franchise films going on floor in quick succession. Golmaal Again rolls this December. Total Dhamaal will start in 2017 and then there’s Rajkumar Hirani’s Munnabhai 3. So that makes it four in a row!

The actor who had brought in his birthday in prison for the last three years, made it an occasion to remember this year with his wife, children, sisters and the media
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 30, 2016)
Sanjay Dutt who turned 57 on Friday celebrated his first birthday as a 'free' man with wife Manyata, sisters, Namrata and Priya, and their husbands, Kumar Gaurav and Owen Roncon, cutting the first cake at midnight.
A source close to the actor adds, "Sanjay's kids, Shahraan and Iqra, who go to bed by 9 pm, missed out on the midnight celebrations. So the doting dad made it a point to wake up early the next morning despite the late night before they left for school and cut another cake with them. The kids gifted the birthday boy a card while Manyata gifted him a hot pair of wheels, an Audi Q7. The family then proceeded to lunch with Manyata and all of Sanjay's favourite dishes were laid out. The day ended with a family dinner at the couple's favourite restaurant in Bandra."
However, before calling it a day, Sanjay cut a third cake with the media at 6 pm, telling them how great it felt to celebrate as a free man. "I spent the last three birthdays in jail. Today, I'm glad I can celebrate it with my kids," he exulted.
The actor also took the opportunity to address rumours of a rift with Salman Khan, making it a point to underline the fact that the actor had called to wish him. "He is my younger brother, there is no fight between us and can never be. I had called him too when he got a clean chit in the court cases. I'm happy for him, I don't want anyone to go through what I did," he said emotionally.
However it's not all play and no work for the Dutt who has his hands full. "Marco Bhau, with Vidhu Vinod Chopra, will begin in November. I'm doing a film with Mahesh Manjrekar too which is a remake of the Marathi film De Dhakka. And the next Munnabhai film is expected to roll by 2018," he informed, adding that he has resumed his workouts and is also practising martial arts. "I have also given up alcohol and follow a strict diet to keep fit," he concluded.

The successful
actor-director jodi of Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh Manjrekar is set to return
after over a decade with the remake of the hit Marathi film De Dhakka,
to be produced by Omung Kumar and Sandeep Singh. Sanju, who turns a year
older today, is excited about doing this film and teaming up with his
buddy again. Excerpts from a quick Q & A with the actor:
Mahesh and you have done many films together including Vaastav: The Reality. How does it feel to team up again after more than 10 years?
I'm looking forward to it. Mahesh has already done the film in Marathi. I'm excited to work with him because we have always shared a special relationship. As a director, he manages to extract good performances from his actors. Also, De Dhakka is an amazing film. It's a laugh riot about a disjointed family that gets together for a reason. Though the comedy is important, there are a lot of other emotions that really appealed to me.
Talking about comedy, aren't you constantly quizzed about the next instalment of Munnabhai?
Yes, that's true. Raju (Hirani) will start Munnabhai 3 after the biopic. I'm also doing this beautiful film Marco Bhau with Vinodji (Vidhu Vinod Chopra), which is about the relationship between a man and his kid. It will start in November and should be my first release.
You seem to have been focusing a lot on your fitness regimen...
I have been working out religiously and have also been into martial arts, particularly a new Indonesian form.
What are your plans for the day?
As a kid, my birthdays were always special. Later, I celebrated my 50th birthday in South Africa. This time I just want to spend the day with family and close friends.
You were away from them during the last couple of birthdays...
Yes, my last few birthdays were in jail. My wife and sisters would come to meet me but I missed my kids, because I didn't want them to come there. So this time, I want to be with them and have a lot of fun.
Did your prison inmates do anything in particular on your birthdays?
In their own little way, they made my birthday special. They made a cookie for me, it was really touching.
Memories of your tough days must be etched on your mind?
Yes, they are. But I really want people to know everything about our nation, the laws and the constitution. It's very important.

Ever since he walked out of
Pune's Yerwada jail on February 25, Sanjay Dutt's Pali Hill residence
has been buzzing with a steady stream of visitors. On Sunday, the
56-year-old-actor ventured out for a quick reunion with close friend and
Munnabhai director Rajkumar Hirani and his Circuit, Arshad Warsi, at the
filmmaker's Goregaon residence.
“It was an emotional get-together and the trio had been looking forward to it ever since Sanjay walked out of jail,“ says a source close to the actor, adding that host Hirani had even arranged for a live band which played their favourite songs, most of them from Sanjay's films. “The highlight of the evening was all of them singing along when the Munnabhai title song came on. An emotional Sanjay gave everyone a big jadoo ki jhappi.“
While Sanjay and Arshad were accompanied by their wives, Manyata and Maria Goretti, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra and actor Boman Irani were in attendance too. “Raju is writing the third Munnabhai film. Plans of taking the franchise forward are afoot but nothing has been finalised as yet. The film will go on the floors in 2017 as the team is presently busy with other commitments,“ the source reveals. While Hirani is set to start shooting for the Sanjay Dutt biopic featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay is gearing up for Siddharth Anand's next and Arshad is busy shooting for Irada with Naseeruddin Shah.
The revelry soon spilled over to the outdoors when the gathered photographers requested to have their pic clicked baba with Sanju when he was on his way out. Manyata was quick on the uptake, volunteering to go click-click as the bunch posed. That's a Kodak moment for keeps.

Sanjay Dutt completes jail term; which films will he be doing?

As Dutt completes his jail term today, we look at the possibilities of his comeback to the movies
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; February 25, 2016)
In one of his interviews, Sanjay Dutt had said that
the only thing he craved was freedom, not money or fame. And today, the
actor has got his wish. Not only does he walk out of jail free, having
served his term fully, Sanjay walks towards a new beginning in his life.
The actor is ready to take on the world with a fresh, clear outlook.
And nothing can keep him down. Yes, he has lost three years of his
acting career and several new actors have come into the industry, but if
there’s one thing the actor is best at, it is reinventing himself.
Though his film career suffered for a couple of years after he was released from jail, the first time in 1997, he turned it around with films like Vaastav, which had him playing a gangster and Khubsoorat, a rom com. And then, there was no looking back. With Munnabhai MBBS, Sanjay had an image makeover. But instead of sticking to playing innocent, fun characters, Sanjay chose to be the menacing villain in Agneepath and that won him accolades. In short, whether it is playing a macho hero, the dreaded villain, the bhai with a heart of gold or a goofy character, Sanjay is a crowd-puller.
The question is: Which film will Sanjay choose to make his comeback with One film that his fans are eagerly awaiting for is third part of the hit Munnabhai franchise. Though it is in the pipeline, and the writers have got hold of the subject, director Rajkumar Hirani is busy putting together a film on the actor first! Sanjay’s biopic starring Ranbir Kapoor will roll before Hirani takes to helming Munnabhai 3, the script for which is being readied. Sanjay Gupta, with whom Dutt has done several films including Kaante, Zinda and Shootout At Lokhandwala, had announced Kaante 2, but that is not happening anytime soon. Gupta is now going ahead with Kaabil, starring Hrithik Roshan. During Sanjay’s incarceration, his wife Manyata who was handling their production house — Sanjay Dutt Productions — had met Prabhu Dheva and signed him to direct a film for their banner. So, there is a likelihood of Sanjay starring in a home production first if Prabhu Dheva’s film has him in a leading role. For that matter, even Rohit Shetty has been roped in to direct a film for Sanjay’s home production. Rohit, however, has already announced his plans of making Golmaal 4 this year.
OMG — Oh My God! director Umesh Shukla had approached Sanjay with an idea for a film when he was out on parole, which the actor had liked and given his nod to. It will be a socially relevant film high on entertainment laced with a message. So will that be his first film? Umesh hopes so, but he says it depends on Sanjay. “I will meet him at his convenience to narrate the script. He has just come out, he needs to spend time with his family after what he has gone through,” says the director.
One thing is for sure. The actor will be raring to make a comeback on screen. As Subhash Ghai who directed him in Vidhaata and Khalnayak, says, “He will come out this time with much more maturity and sense of responsibility as a human and also a bigger star on screen. He just wants to focus on his career as an actor, nothing else, that’s what he told me two months ago.”
Gupta adds, “Sanjay has excelled in intense action as well as comedy. I am sure that all his fans are waiting with bated breath as are filmmakers like me.”
Manyata appoints new team to rebuild hubby Sanjay Dutt’s image after he comes out of jail?

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; January 13, 2016)
Preparations have begun for Sanjay Dutt’s return to Bollywood. The actor, who is currently serving his jail term after conviction in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, is due to walk free in the early hours of February 25.
Although that is over a month away, his wife Manyata has started his image rebuilding process. For starters, those handling Dutt’s films and related work have been shown the door. The old guard has made way for a fresh team. A new publicist has been hired in a bid to streamline and provide information about him. A talent management agency has also been roped in to build Brand Dutt.
Says a source, “Manyata is making sure that Sanjay is surrounded by the right people and does not want him to take any wrong decisions in future. Sanjay is known to listen to his heart and work in his friends’ ventures. But this time, she wants him to be more professional in his approach. He will be guided about films and endorsement deals keeping in mind his new image.”
Adds the source, “When he was out on parole in September last year, he had conducted meetings with the talent agency to chalk out a game plan for him. Now as the date of his release is nearing, things are being put to perspective.”
Buzz is that the first film that Dutt signs will be something that portrays him in positive light. Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, who will also work on the star’s biopic, might be asked to revive his Munnabhai 3 franchise that Dutt is synonymous with. The star’s production house will also be put in order to ensure the release of their long-in-the-making comic caper, Hasmukh Pighal Gaya.
Meanwhile, Dutt, who has been penning his thoughts almost daily while in jail, is also likely to come up with his autobiography soon.
Munnabhai will be back soon-Rajkumar Hirani & Abhijat Joshi

Harshada Rege (DNA; December 25, 2015)
The last Munnabhai movie released in 2006. It’ll be 10
years now that fans have been waiting for the next installment. And
just when everyone was thinking that maybe there wouldn’t be another
Munnabhai movie, Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi are all set to
surprise the audience. The team that worked on 3 Idiots and PK, post the Munnabhai series is working on the life of Sanjay Dutt, but they
promise to bring Munna back on the big screen. Says Abhijat, “We have
found an idea for the next Munnabhai movie, which we think is as good as
Lage Raho Munnabhai. For all these years we were not going ahead with
it because none of the ideas were standing up to that level of Lage Raho
Munnabhai. So we attempted various things.” A few years ago, there was a
trailer of Munnabhai Chale Amreeka that people assumed would be the
next sequel.
“We couldn’t do Munnabhai Chale Amreeka because My Name Is Khan released around that time and it was similar to our idea. So, for the last 10 years, we toyed with various things, but for the first time we have something so stunning that we feel we can make a film which is as great as Lage Raho Munnabhai,” he adds.
Probe him further about the plot and he says, “I can’t reveal anything more, but I can definitely say that the idea is up there with Lage Raho Munnabhai. That’s why we are committed to writing it. It will take about six more months to finish it.”
And will the cast remain the same? “Yes, of course. It will have Sanju and Arshad.” And what about the heroine? Munnabhai MBBS starred Gracy Singh, while Vidya Balan took over in Lage Raho Munnabhai. “All that will be decided on, once the script is finalised. And that will be Raju’s call.”
Hirani too confirmed the development. But the audience will have to wait patiently as the director is now busy with the Sanjay Dutt biopic, which will see Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. He said, “Munnabhai will happen after the Sanjay Dutt biopic. Once we finish it, we’ll start with this.”
Ishqiya actors Arshad Warsi & Naseeruddin Shah reunite for Irada

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 15, 2015)
After Abhishek Chaubey's
Ishqiya and its sequel, Dedh Ishqiya, Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah
have reunited for debutant director duo Aparna Singh and Nishikant
Tripathi's Irada. The shooting is currently underway in Patiala.
“It's an intense, hard-hitting suspense thriller about two National Security Guard (NSG) cops who are pitted against each other. It deals with politics and corruption,“ informs Arshad, who is having a lot of fun shooting with Naseer in a “performance-oriented role“. He adds that there are is no “maardhaad“ between them in the film.
Lyricist
Sameer Anjaan, who is also presenting the Falguni Patel and Prince
Soni-produced film, has been instrumental in getting the two actors for
the project. Arshad, who is also bonding with Naseer over food and
crossword puzzles on the sets, reveals that the veteran actor is more of
a friend to him, citing an incident from a few years ago. “I had once
said in an interview that I couldn't
call Naseer my friend as he is a much senior actor. He called me the
next day and asked why he couldn't be my friend?“ Arshad reminisces with
a laugh.
While he will return to Mumbai to celebrate Christmas with his family, Naseer will have to stay back. “He has a lot more screen time so he will be around for longer. The second schedule starts in January and will go on till March. We will shoot in Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Manali and Mumbai,“ Arshad informs.
Mirror had earlier reported that Chakde! India girl Sagarika Ghatge is playing the female lead in Irada. Is there a romantic track featuring them? “There's nothing of that sort in the story. All the characters in the film have their own strong space,“ he maintains.
Meanwhile, Rajkumar Hirani's Circuit is looking forward to start work on the third Munnabhai film. “I think Raju is still writing the script. We should start work on it once Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) is back,“ Arshad signs off.
