Mumbai is my dream city-Manish Paul

Manish Paul talks about his 11-year-old journey in the city and how he has come to love it
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; July 30, 2016)
Delhi boy Manish Paul came to Mumbai 11 years ago in
September 2005, co-incidentally around the same time that dna was
launched! Manish arrived in the city with the dream of becoming an actor
and the determination to settle in the city. Cut to 2016, Manish is a
big name in the television circuit and has also forayed into films. Not
only has his dream come true, he has also put down his roots in the city
with nothing less than a plush four-bedroom house in Andheri. After
all, as Manish says, it’s the maximum city. Here, the popular TV host
and actor talks about how Mumbai has owned him and what he loves about
the city... and what he doesn’t.
“Eleven years ago, when I came to Mumbai, I stayed in Chembur in my nani’s house for some time. I didn’t have much money, I used to travel in buses then. I didn’t take trains, because I am claustrophic and people had scared the sh*t out of me saying it is terribly crowded. I used to walk from Chembur to the domestic airport because I had nothing else to do. I would take a cab, bus or rickshaw, (whatever was convenient) to Andheri.
I would sit on the stairs of Fun Republic, the whole day with my bag. I used to have a sandwich from a guy stationed outside Yash Raj Studios and that would be my snack and lunch. That was the cheapest that was available. I was struggling then, meeting people and telling them I am available for work.
Though I was new to the city, as I started getting work, apnapan lagne laga. It felt as if the city is giving me a hug saying ‘I don’t mind you staying here’. Later, I rented a house in Malad, but I was all alone and I hated that. A couple of my friends including Saiwyn Qadras — the writer of Neerja — used to come and stay with me. I was doing one serial and had got a job as a RJ. Things were fine and I got married to Sanyukta in 2007. However, the following year was a struggle. I was working and earning money, but wasn’t happy with what I was doing. That’s when I took a call and stayed at home for a year. My wife was supportive of my decision.
There were times when I would breakdown, but I never felt like giving up or leaving the city. In 2009, I got a show to host on Zee TV, then red carpet shows happened followed by stage shows and finally big reality shows. There was no looking back after that.
From then to now, I have loved everything about the city except the traffic. Every monsoon, it’s the same story. I remember when I was working as a RJ a decade ago, we used to make jingles on potholes — even those jingles are the same. However, I can’t stay away from Mumbai for long. I love the vibe the city gives to a workaholic like me. People here are chilled out. They never interfere in your life, they keep to their work. At the same time, if you are sitting on the road worried, ek ya do log pooch hi lenge what is wrong and will be helpful. Most importantly, the city never sleeps, which is a big thing for someone like me because it’s only after 11 pm that I set out to roam!
I have seen most of the places in Mumbai from Hanging Gardens to Elephanta Caves. However, when my cousins come down to visit me, they are more interested in seeing where all the actors live! Earlier, I would drive them down around Bandra and Andheri and show them Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan’s houses. Now, I just send a car and driver with them!
The one place I love to unwind in Mumbai is Marine Drive. My wife and I check into Trident at night and early in the morning we go and sit at one end of the boulevard. I find the corner extremely peaceful, there’s no noise and you can hear the sound of water. It’s wonderful.
I think I was destined to come to Mumbai. This is where I found my calling and now there’s no question of my ever leaving the city. In fact, I made sure that both my kids — daughter Saisha and son Yuvann — were born here only though my wife’s parents wanted her to go to Delhi.”
Manish Paul to be paid Rs 2.5 crore to present Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 9?

Reality shows are the darling of small screen audience and the money that’s involved is undoubtedly obscene. If sources are to be believed, Manish Paul, who is set to present the upcoming season of dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, for the fifth successive year, will be taking home a cheque of Rs 2.5 crore. This makes him the highest paid non-Bollywood TV host at the moment.
Says a source, “Manish has been associated with the show for five years and shares a warm equation with the production team of Jhalak. He is not just spontaneous and funny, but pretty flexible and accommodating too. So, when he asked for Rs 2.5 crore as remuneration for hosting the upcoming season, the makers did not hesitate.” Reportedly, the anchor-actor made Rs 1.5 crore last year as the show host.
Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa will have close to 35 episodes over its four-month run, which means Manish will be paid close to R 7 lakh per episode. “Normally, TV hosts draw Rs 1-1.4 crore to be part of popular reality shows that run as long as four months— unless he/she is a Bollywood celebrity. However, Manish seems to be the highest paid non-Bollywood anchor on TV currently,” adds an insider.
The channel’s spokesperson denies the buzz while Manish chose not to respond to text messages. A source close to him, however, confirms the story.
I was 7 when I wrote 'Mard' on my chest like Amitabh Bachchan-Manish Paul

Unlike many actors who begin
their journey in the industry as assistant directors or models, Delhi
lad Manish Paul had never imagined that he would become an actor some
day. He was content tickling the funny bone, hosting shows, live and on
television. Only after he packed his bags and moved to Mumbai, did he
set his mind to foray into acting. When he got bored of television
serials, he quit and sat at home for a year, hoping for something
better. Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa proved to be a turning point, as the dance
reality show not only got him opportunities to host award ceremonies and
shows, but also gave him a break in Bollywood with Mickey Virus. As he
gears up for his next release, Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive, this
Friday, we catch up with the actor at a suburban club over a cuppa
coffee for a free-wheeling chat.
We heard that you had to convince director Abhishek Sharma to cast you in this film.
Yes, I got this project in a filmi style. I was supposed to meet Abhishek for a small role in another movie, Sharmaji Ka Atom Bomb. I missed it as my manager didn't inform me. Naturally, as a director he was angry and called to blast me for not turning up for the audition. I apologised to him and went to meet him the next day. He looked at me in a peculiar manner and said, 'Today you go. You don't do this film'. I apologised to him profusely and he said, 'You do the lead in my next film'. He gave me the script and asked me to meet him after a day for an audition. Usually, I get nervous for auditions, but we had such a wonderful interaction that it went on for four hours.
Your kiss with Sikandar Kher has made headlines.
Ha, ha, ha! It's not a kiss, it's just a gimmick. Sikandar and I had such a great time shooting for the film and promoting it. We didn't lip-lock, we just cheated. At a promotional event, a journo was pestering us with questions on whether we would play gay or bisexual characters. We were too exhausted with all the promotions; so we just impromptu decided to give it back to that journalist.
Back home, what did your wife Sanyukta have to say about it?
Touchwood, I'm blessed with a wife who has a good sense of humour. I credit her for the important role she has played in my life that helped me reach here today. Also, I'm in a profession in which I have to make people happy. How can I do that if my family isn't happy?
Going back to where you started from...your family is associated with finance, how did you venture into entertainment?
My dad is a chartered accountant and my brother is a financial advisor. But I've been filmi since childhood. I was a big Amitabh Bachchan fan since I was seven years old, and I remember that once I didn't step outside until I got my mother to write 'Mard' on my chest. In school too, I'd participate in dramatics, elocution and singing competitions. It all started when I got a job in a multi-brand department store where I'd make announcements. A multiplex guy offered me to host film premieres at their properties in Delhi. I quoted Rs 1,500 per event, so when he said that they have four events a month, I felt like I had settled. Though some relatives would run me down, my parents always sup ported me. That's how I later bagged a TV show that set me on the path to this industry.
Didn't you ever think of enrolling into an acting school?
I believe that learning on the job teaches you more than a drama school. As for theatre, I did a play called Bade Bhai Sahab, originally written by Munshi Premchand. I got only Rs 600 after working on the play for a month and a half, after that I didn't want to pursue theatre. While newcomers try to grab as much work as possible, you are taking time to choose your films. I didn't get too many interesting offers. I was being offered the part of the hero's friend or brother, which I didn't want to do. Though I won the Best Debut award for Mickey Virus at some award shows, and I also share good rapport with Karan Johar, people wondered why I'm not working with him. I told them that if Karan felt I suited a role in any of his productions, he will cast me. Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive got delayed a bit, but the buzz has boosted our confidence. I have the Katha remake coming up, in which I reprise Farooque Shaikh saab's role. It's such an interesting character that I didn't need to listen to the script. If a good role comes my way, I'll do it irrespective of the banner backing it.
Do you feel stereotyped with your image that comes with comedy?
Stereotype is a term that is overused in the industry. When I came to Mumbai, no one knew I could do this. Now people are telling me, 'Comedy bahut ho gayi. Let's do something different.' Contrary to popular belief, comedy is not an easy task. Besides, I've just begun a new film, Baa Baa Black Sheep, with Anupam Kher. It's a father-son story, but I play a sharpshooter in it.
While outside people expect you to make them laugh, did you win Sanyukta's heart with your humour as well?
I know her since kindergarten. I used to flirt a lot in school and even tell her about it. She would say that I'm a cheap guy. She's been with me through out, from doing my school homework while I played with my friends to lending me her father's shirts and perfumes. One day I expressed my feelings for her, and she turned around and told me that,' Dosti kharaab ho jayegi', but I was persistent. I was in 12th grade when we started dating. After years of courtship, I popped the question. At first, she had reservations as I was still trying to sort out my career. She suggested that while I moved to Mumbai, she would stay back in Delhi. I was adamant about living together after marriage. Later, when I stopped doing TV and had no work for a year, she ran the house, while I did the washing, cooking, et al. We have been friends before we started dating and we continue to remain so. She is my toughest critic. Sanyukta and my brother, Vivek, keep me grounded.
What did she say about your link-ups, like with Elli Avram during Mickey Virus?
That was the first time I kissed on screen. Sanyukta didn't take it too well. She said that was a little too much. I explained to her that it was a part of the script. There was uneasiness at home initially, but it eased out after a couple of days. She knows I'm not into all these things. I'm happily married and go back to my life after work.
You have a five-year-old daughter, Saisha. Tell us about the kind of father you are.
I'm a very doting father. I ensure that I take my family for two vacations, one in summer and the other at the end of the year. We haven't told Saisha about what I exactly do, though she sees me on TV. When she asks me why people want to click selfies with me, I tell her it's because I'm her father. We're trying to give her a normal life, instead of giving her an idea ki woh actor ki beti hai.

Stardust Awards: Salman Khan hugs Kajol; laughly crazily over Alia Bhatt-Manish Paul dubsmash videos

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
walked down the red carpet, arm-in-arm with pa-in-law, Amitabh
Bachchan, and took home
the power-packed performance of the year award for Jazbaa from a Monday
evening gala. Presenting her the
trophy was the ethereal diva Rekha, dressed in her signature Kanjivaram
sari. She congratulated Ash with a jhappi and a kiss.
Salman Khan hugged Kajol, bonded with bestie Shah Rukh Khan, but did not interact with Saif Ali Khan. The actor, who arrived only ten minutes before Aishwarya and Amitabh Bachchan, left the venue before Ash went on stage. They were seated in the same row but Prem was sandwiched between Mukesh and Nita Ambani on the far left, while the Bachchan bahu sat poised on the right.
Alia Bhatt and Manish Paul set the ball rolling with a series of dubsmash videos that were aired live and had the audience in splits. “Salman nearly fell off his chair laughing,“ a guest informed Mirror. Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ranveer Singh sizzled on stage.
Bajirao Mastani director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was across the street at a restaurant enjoying a quiet meal. He met some of the B-townies who dropped by for a quick bite on their way home.
PS: Sooraj Pancholi, whom Salman had referred to as the “heroine“ of his production, Hero, after he teared up at the film's trailer launch, cried once again, while receiving his Best Debut award. Sob, sob!

Manish Paul not promoting his upcoming film Ranbanka?

Anirban Das (MID-DAY; October 28, 2015)
Manish Paul, who made his Bollwood debut with Mickey Virus (2013), will be seen in an upcoming film titled Ranbanka. However, the funnyman seems to be in no mood to promote the film; he did not even attend the trailer launch earlier this month.
Sources suggest the actor is unhappy with the way the film has turned out. “Manish feels an item song, which was incorporated in the film without his knowledge, could have been done away with. Moreover, a few scenes that were not discussed as part of the script were also included,” informs a source close to the actor.
Manish refused to comment on the matter while producer Ajay Yadav shares a different story about the actor washing his hands of the film. “Manish threw tantrums during the shoot. We had informed him about the song and he had liked it too. We wanted him to give us three days to shoot the item number and a few other scenes, but he said that he would be able to devote only six hours. So, we had to go ahead without him,” says Yadav.
The producer also claims that he had signed an agreement in which Manish had pledged to give a fortnight to the promotions. “But now, he is not giving us even half an hour. He is not answering my calls. I don’t know why he is doing it, but I think he does not want the film to release,” he adds.
Shah Rukh Khan to perform at Anubhav Sinha's fundraiser for cause of farmers

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 9, 2015)
After their superhero drama, Ra.One, bagged critical and commercial success at the box-office in 2011, Tum Bin director Anubhav Sinha is collaborating with the Baadshah once again.
Shah Rukh Khan will perform at a grand fundraiser for the benefit of the farmers who have been committing suicide in India, due to lack of funds and rainfall.
Anubhav, whose heart wrenches at the thought of farmers hanging from trees and being found dead in wells, told Mirror, "This concert has been on my mind since quite some time, but I began speaking to people about it only a week back."
Titled, 'Son of Soil,' the filmmaker has got long term friend SRK on board. "I met SRK and discussed the idea with him, but even before I finished my sentence, he told me with a straight face, 'Just tell me where do I have to be and when.' He was immediately on board," says Sinha.
The grapevine was abuzz with news that the two collaborators had not been on talking terms for the last few years, but Anubhav laughs off the rumours. "That's not true at all," he asserted. "We have always been in touch and he is a wonderful friend. I'm delighted that he readily agreed to be a part of my concert," he says.
The three-hour long concert will be held on November 28 but Anubhav is yet to finalize a venue for the event. "It will be either Delhi or Mumbai. It depends on which city gives us the maximum sponsorship opportunities," asserts Anubhav, who will be donating all the money raised through the event, to needy farmers across the country.
In addition to this, a close filmmaker friend, whose name Anubhav refuses to divulge, will also film a live documentary on the entire concert and the workings behind-the-scenes.
The 50-year-old filmmaker hasn't met the farmers yet, but has established a disbursal committee, comprising of senior journalists and finance experts, to oversee the fund transfers to farmers.
Besides SRK, composers Vishal-Shekhar, singer Ankit Tiwari and host Manish Paul, will also be a part of the event. Everyone associated with the concert will perform without charging a fee.
Anubhav is approaching other celebrities too. "The idea is to get influential people on board and create more awareness about this problem," he points out.
My wife suggested we keep an eco Ganesha-Manish Paul

Since 2009, Manish Paul has been doing just that, celebrating the festival in a big way at home
As told to Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; September 23, 2015)
I have been bringing Ganpatiji home since 2009. I am
from Delhi and shifted to Mumbai in 2005, but they say Ganpati jab aane
hote hai tab aate hai. So, it was four years after I came to Mumbai that
I started keeping Ganpati.
It was my wife Sanyukta who suggested it. I was shooting when she called me and said why don’t we bring Ganpati and that too, an eco-friendly one. Even I had been thinking about it and immediately said yes. The reason being, I wouldn’t like to go dancing on the streets for the visarjan and the next day, find idols lying on the road. It is a horrible sight. Instead, we immerse the idol at home and pour the water on the plants in our building.
Ganpati is a huge celebration for us. My entire family from Delhi comes down. My wife is very big on decorations. In fact, she has designed the interiors of our new house. For Ganesha, we do a lot of flower decorations and lighting as both my wife and I are fond of it.
My mother is a brilliant cook and being a Punjabi, there is a lot of emphasis on food during the festivities. We have several delicacies and me being a paneer bhakt, woh toh banta hi hai. I love kheer and halwa made by my mother, so I forget my diet for two days and gorge on the sweets.
I make it a point to take two days off for the festival as we keep Ganpati for a day and a half. Last year, I remember the Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa shoot was clashing with the festival, but I told the channel that I wouldn’t be there and to shoot without me. I told the judges (Madhuri Dixit, Remo D’Souza, Karan Johar) main toh Ganpatiji se panga loonga nahi, aapko lena hai toh lo, but they were all sweet and cancelled the shoot. The entire team came to my house instead. I love people coming to my house, as they bring a positive vibe.
I appreciate dna’s eco-Ganesha initiative. It is our contribution to protecting the environment and I hope many will emulate it.
I should block Nag Panchami for release of my films-Manish Paul

We spoke with Manish Paul, who is known for his whacky sense of humour, about completing 10 years in Mumbai this week and how a roller coaster ride it has been so far
Noyon Jyoti Parasara (BOMBAY TIMES; September 11, 2015)
How has your 10-year journey in Mumbai been?
I complete a decade in the city on September 12. I came with just two suitcases and stayed with my maternal grandparents in Chembur. I walked every day to the domestic airport, that was about 14 kilometers away. I used to pack a bag, which I still have and call it my struggle bag, with one pack of biscuits and a mango drink and walk. Then, I would take a bus to Andheri. From those days to where I am today, I think it has been a great journey. It feels good when people tell me that they like my work. It's nice when grannies recognise me at airports and signal me to come and meet them.
How much of your humour on screen is scripted?
I believe in on the spot humour. I have a very good writer who gives me pointers. So mostly whatever you have seen on stage, like the kind of masti I have done with Karan Johar or Madhuri Dixit, is not written.
You have been an RJ, VJ and actor. What are you most comfortable with?
I am an entertainer and comfortable with everything. Many have asked me what I would have been if not an actor.I don't know! All I know is that I would have put my best into whatever I do.
Who do you think is the best host?
I like what Amitabh Bachchan sir does. I had hosted a KBC episode with him, and I was amazed at how he reads from the prompters and suddenly takes off, talks to audience and has fun with them. It is important to keep the audience inter ested and he does it brilliantly. I also enjoyed working with Shah Rukh sir. Before every show that we do, we meet in the vanity, read the script once and go on stage and take pointers. So even if I crack a joke at him, he takes it very sportingly and then cracks one right back on me.
There's been a long gap since your first film...
Yes, but I have not become as big an actor that I can decide the release dates of my films. I often joke that I should block Nag Panchami for release of my films. Tere Bin Laden 2 is ready now. The film requires a lot of CG, and we also redid the film a bit as the director felt it was not up to the mark. Thankfully, it has come out well and we are really happy!
Tell us about some crazy fan experiences.
There is this fan in Delhi who has got the same tattoo as mine. She told me that she is not getting married and that she's told her family she wants some one like me. She knows everything about me and it's almost scary. But she tells me that I need not worry as she is not going to trouble me. There was another girl in Bengaluru, who kept sliding letters below my door throughout the night. She left only after I wrote to her, telling her that I have got all her letters and that I would really like to sleep.
Any message for your fans on Follo?
One message to all my fans - 'Follo' me! On a serious note, I tell everybody that I came to Mumbai with nothing but my work. If someone asks me to sweep the floor, I will do it better than anyone else. Have faith in yourself and do your best.

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; September 3, 2015)
Television show host Manish Paul is known for his comic timing and sense of humour, but it seems Shahid Kapoor isn’t amused. According to the latest buzz on the grapevine, the duo exchanged some icy vibes on the set of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded when Manish made some “personal” comments about Shahid, who is judging the dance reality show. The actor apparently brought the matter to the notice of the production team.
A source says, “Manish has been hosting Jhalak for the past two seasons and at times, his jokes tend to get personal. So, some celebrities and contestants do not like it. But Shahid decided to speak out and inform the makers too.”
Of late, the actor has been consciously guarding details about his personal life. In fact, at the trailer launch of his upcoming film Shaandaar, he snubbed all questions related to his married life and wife, Mira Rajput. Adds the source, “Shahid likes to keep his personal life personal. He does not enjoy it when the jokes and comments go overboard.” Manish denies the buzz and says, “(There is) nothing like that. We are having a lot of fun on the set. There is no problem at all.”
While Shahid was unavailable for comment, the channel’s spokesperson says: “There is absolutely no truth to it. Shahid is fond of Manish and their chemistry is very good which is visible on the show. We are surprised with these rumours being floated.”

"Madhuri, who was accompanied by husband Dr Sriram Nene, was one of the first guests at 9 pm. She arrived even before Manish's wife Sanyukta and shook a leg with Manish to the tune of her Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani chart-topper, Ghagra, leaving close to midnight," informs a guest, adding that the duo was reminiscing about their time spent on the sets of a dance reality show, which Madhuri judged for four seasons and which Manish is still hosting. "She admitted she misses Manish and his antics."
The present contestants of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa were at the do. Shamita Shetty, who had recently fractured her nose while rehearsing for the reality show, was wearing a bandage.
Ayushmann and Sushant showed off their moves on the dance floor. Lauren, one of the current judges of the show, urged everyone to shake a leg.
Ayushmann had an early morning shoot so he made a quick exit. But Raftaar continued rapping and the party went on...
A film from Karan Johar will be the best gift-Manish Paul

Manish Paul, who turns a year older today is having a
double celebration. On his birthday, he is shifting into his new house
at Raheja Classic. A housewarming cum birthday party has been planned.
And, Manish has a lot to celebate about. He has finished the shooting
for Katha remake and is awaiting the release of Tere Bin Laden 2 on
October 30 this year. Currently, he is hosting Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa
Reloaded. We asked him some fun questions and he came up with zany
answers. Read on...
Do you think turning a year older means you’ll be wiser?
Definitely. With time you learn more, though I don’t think in terms of numbers. For me it’s just another year gone by and the beginning of a new year.
What gift do you want from Karan Johar?
I want one film, baaki main dekh longa (laughs).
Have you ever discussed it with him?
We don’t discuss it because it will make it awkward. We are fond of each other and our friendship goes beyond films. Karan has a very good sense of humour, meri itni masti mein he has a huge contribution. A big thanks to him.
One place you would never want to ring in your birthday?
A place where I don’t have my family and friends. I love to celebrate my birthday with people who give good vibes. That gives me more energy.
One place you want to ring in your birthday?
Next time, I want to celebrate at the Times Square, standing in the centre and cutting a cake, with all my friends there.
What would you do if you wake up on your birthday and realise that you have lost all your hair?
I will have to call Anupam Kher and tell him baal toh chale gaye, now I want to learn acting from you so that I can do well as an actor!
What would be the three worst gifts to give you?
Clothes, film DVDs and dumbbells. I already have a lot of clothes so that will only get duplicated. I always work out at the gym so it’s no use giving me dumbbells. As for films, I already have most of the films, so there’s no point giving me DVDs.
What are the three best gifts to give you?
Gizmos. I am gizmo freak I will be very happy if you give me anything. I am also fond of suitcases because I travel a lot. I have suitcases in different sizes and colours. Still, I would welcome one more. Wrist watches are another favourite. I already have over 20 watches. You’ll see me wearing a different watch in every episode of Jhalak.. as I try and match it with my clothes.
On your birthday what if Madhuri Dixit turned up at your house?
I will go mad. It’ll be a dream-come-true, the biggest gift for me! Now that you have asked me this, I will be expecting her!
You must be missing her on the show...
Yes. I have a different relationship with her. If you’ve noticed I haven’t gone to the judges table at all this season!

BOMBAY TIMES (July 26, 2015)
It was one glitzy and
entertaining evening as Bollywood stars came together for the first
edition of Arab Indo Bollywood Awards in Dubai. The event will air on
Indian television this evening. Packing in the most exciting performance
of the awards was superstar Salman Khan, who danced to a medley of his
chartbusters. Salman was clearly in his element as was seen in his
sporting replies to host Karan Johar and Manish Paul's queries on who
among Bollywood's current crop he pairs up best with. Priyanka Chopra is
said to have made a dhamakedaar entry on a hot air balloon followed by a
sizzling act to a mash-up of her hits. Parineeti Chopra added to the
entertainment quotient of the evening, as she presented the nominees of
2014's Best
Film category. Jacqueline Fernandez turned up the heat with her act
and taught Manish Paul how to belly dance in style! Varun Dhawan
performed to Jeena Jeena, Tera Hero Idhar Hai, Saturday
Saturday and Jee Karda.
Also present at the event were Kriti Sanon, Arbaaz Khan, David Dhawan, Sajid Nadiadwala, Neha Dhupia, Shraddha Kapoor and Kanika Kapoor amongst many others.
The event was replete with side-splitting gags by its celebrity hosts, performances and recognition to deserving performers of 2014.

Shahid Kapoor made to host an episode of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded?

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; July 17, 2015)
Rumour mills had been buzzing about Shahid Kapoor, who made his TV debut last week as a reality show judge, demanding to host an episode of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. However, sources close to the actor have revealed that the responsibility was, in fact, thrust on him at the last minute as part of a “surprise gig” on the show.
A source says, “Shahid is taking his small screen job seriously. He likes to go through all scripts and oversee arrangements personally. While shooting earlier this week, he was asked by the creative team to host the show all of a sudden. He was simply handed the script and told that it was for a surprise gig. However, he was sporting enough to go ahead with their plan.” Consequently, the regular host of the show, Manish Paul, was given a day’s rest.
A source from the channel says, “It was preplanned. We will show Manish getting kidnapped in the episode and Shahid will fill in for him. This is just to add a fun element to the show. Some parts of that particular episode have also been hosted by the other two judges, Karan Johar and Ganesh Hegde.”
While Shahid was not available for comment, the channel spokesperson says, “There was no demand ( by Shahid) or any publicity stunt (by the channel).”
Shahid Kapoor to go back to work on July 14

Exactly a week after tying the knot with Mira Rajput (on July 7), Shahid Kapoor will be back to work leaving his new bride at home. He will be shooting for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded that he is judging on July 14. The actor who got married in Delhi, will have a reception in Mumbai for his B-Town friends on July 12 and soon after, will return to the sets.
Speculation is rife that Shahid will introduce his wife on the show. JDJR host Manish Paul said, “That is our aim. We have to get her on the show. Let’s see in which mood Shahid comes on the sets, but there’s no doubt that we will tease him a lot.” Have they planned something special on the first day shoot? “Creatively we are yet to take a call,” smiles Manish.
We are exploring what happened that night in Abbottabad-Abhishek Sharma

Ankur Pathak (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 28, 2015)
In 2010, Abhishek Sharma's
Tere Bin Laden opened in Indian theatres to a rousing reception.
The satire, about a young Pakistani man's desperate attempts to
migrate to the US, involved Ali Zafar's character selling a video
featuring a fake Osama Bin Laden to news channels.
Taking it a step further, Sharma says that the sequel which is titled Tere Bin Laden Dead or Alive explores what happened on May 2, 2011, the day the “Most wanted man in the world“ was finally executed. While Ali Zafar has been replaced by Manish Paul, Pradhuman Singh, who played Laden in the original, will return in the sequel. On what inspired the story, Sharma said, “His so-called killing is still shrouded in mystery and I felt this story would give us a great narrative edge.“
The director adds that conspiracy theories have been used to create laughs. “It's absolute farce! We're making fun of the war on terror, America's foreign policies, Pakistan's reaction to the global outrage and even the movie Zero Dark Thirty that claimed to be a serious take on what exactly happened,“ Sharma said. So why did it take him so long to organise the film's release? He replied: “We finally have locked October 30 as the date of release. The film required extensive VFX work and I got busy with another film in between the Akshay Kumar-starrer The Shaukeens. We had to digitally recreate the silent helicopter which was allegedly used to land in Abbottabad, the sleepy town in Pakistan which is where Osama is believed to have been killed.“

I feel as if I was blessed by Farooq Sheikh-Manish Paul on Katha remake

Manish Paul, who is
shooting for Katha remake is trying to imbibe Farooq Sheikh’s
mannerisms for the role. The actor has watched Katha innumerable times
since he landed the role. “I even watched Chashme Baddoor several times
to learn something from the legendary actor. His comic timing and the
ease with which he delivered his dialogue is amazing, but in those days
nobody made a brouhaha over it. They just considered it their job and
did it brilliantly,” says Manish who got the opporutnity to meet the
actor a few months before he passed away. “I had won the best debut
actor award for Mickey Virus and was giving an interview when I saw
Farooqwalking towards me. I left the interview mid-way, went to him
and touched his feet because he is senior to me. Farooq complimented
me for my work and said I have a good future. That was the first and
last time I met him,” recalls Manish.
Ironically, it was after Farooq’s demise that Manish got the offer to play the actor’s role in the Katha remake. “It was uncanny, but I felt I had his blessings to play this role,” says the actor. He, however, is clear that he cannot really step into the latter’s shoes and is not even trying to. “Initially, I did ask myself if I should be like him, but I knew it was not possible. Also, we have changed a few things to keep up with the times and I am playing the role to the best of my ability,” says Manish.
Vir Das asks for exorbitant price; gets replaced by Manish Paul in Nonsense?

Mirror was the first to
report (November 27) that Vir Das, Sharman Joshi and Zarine
Khan will be seen in a film titled Nonsense to be helmed by debutant
Ashwin Shetty.
Now we have learnt that Vir is no longer part of the project. Although the makers wanted somebody with great comic timing, they were baffled by the large paycheque Vir asked for. “Despite days of negotiations, a figure couldn't be agreed upon. And eventually they had to let go of the actor,“ says a source close to the development. “It made sense for them to look for a more economical alternative. Manish Paul fits the bill.“
The film will be shot in Mauritius and will see the popular TV host play a NGO worker.
When we quizzed Vir about leaving the project over remuneration, he said, “I don't want to comment on this.“
However, the film's producer Sandeep Singh told Mirror, “Vir is a good actor but we couldn't just agree on dates and the price. I've known Manish for years. He's very talented. We start shooting with him in April.“
Just a few days ago, Manish replaced Sohum Shah in Khalid Mohamed's Katha remake.

Two days ago, Mirror had reported that Sohum Shah, the actor-producer of Ship of Theseus, who was the first choice for the role, was out of the project, following date clashes and creative differences.
Elaborating on how he had found a replacement so quickly, Khalid said: “I had already spoken to Manish about the character while we were auditioning other actors. I emailed him the script and he responded positively. Then he watched the original film and we were on.“
According to the filmmaker, Manish is far better choice than Sohum. “He has a lot more star value and is an interesting guy,“ he pointed out.
The film goes on floors today. “We've locked the cast and the location. It is mostly going to be a start-to-end schedule. We should be done by mid-February,“ Khalid informed.
Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, best remembered for his turn as Dhanush's friend in Raanjhanaa, will play Naseerudin Shah's role, while newbie Sharmila Mandre steps into Dipti Naval's shoes.

Akshay Kumar was shooting
for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7 in Goregaon on Tuesday night when he got an
unexpected chance to flaunt his martial arts skills. But when host
Manish Paul asked the Khiladi Kumar to show him some of his moves,
little did he know what lay in store.
Revealed an eyewitness, “What started as a casual conversation, ended with a minor injury for Manish. Akshay warned him to keep his distance but Manish came in the way of one of Akshay's kicks. Though it was unintentional, it sent Manish flying and he landed with a thud a few feet away.“
The source added that everybody present on the sets of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa burst out laughing, not realising the gravity of the situation. But Manish was in a lot of pain and the shoot had to be stopped for a while. “But he took the knock on his chin and later even hugged Akshay,“ said the source.
Confirming the same, Manish told Mirror, “It was terrifying, but I was the one who had insisted that he show me the stunt. He didn't mean to hurt me but the impact sent me crashing and I was blinded by the pain.
But I felt good that this little tragedy led to an unintentional bout of laughter. Even though it was embarrassing, I was happy that at least it entertained people.“
