The label ‘item number’ felt a bit limiting-Malaika Arora

Malaika Arora discusses dancing past stereotypes, ignoring trolls and owning her narrative in an ageist industry
Natasha Coutinho (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 17, 2025)

Actor Malaika Arora turned a year older last month, writing on Instagram, “Thank you all for the love, the wishes, and for making my 50th truly special.” This milestone has become a talking point, not just because of the number, but because she continues to headline dance numbers in a business where ageism still shapes many women’s careers.

“It’s about evolving with the times without losing your core. You have to keep learning, stay fit, reinvent your style, and most importantly, keep your passion alive,” she tells us, adding, “I never want to be complacent or stuck in a particular image. If young performers, especially women, feel confident about choosing their own path because of something I did, that would be the greatest legacy.”

While she did try her hand at acting, Malaika admits her real impact was always forged on the dance floor: “Acting never gave me the same rush as performing a dance number. I enjoyed acting, but dance feels like home to me.”

Many of her early hits were labelled ‘item numbers’, a tag she found restrictive. “The label ‘item number’ felt a bit limiting, but today I see so many artistes taking it as a creative challenge. The focus is more on performance, concept, and how a song fits into the narrative.” As for stepping behind the camera someday, she simply says, “Never say never.”

On the personal front, she remains unfazed by scrutiny around her relationships and choices. “I’ve learned to focus on my truth, and I don’t let negativity decide my self-worth. Trolls will be trolls, but I choose not to engage with that toxicity,” she says, adding that her idea of love today is simple: “Love is about respect, happiness, and companionship.”

I’ve chosen my happiness over anybody’s opinion about me-Malaika Arora

Malaika Arora, who turns 48 today, says trolls don’t affect her anymore
Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 23, 2021)

Actor Malaika Arora knows that for a public figure, being judged or trolled is inevitable. “I’ve been in the public eye for a significant part of my life, which comes with its fair share of criticism. Be it on the work front or personal one, you’re scrutinised for some decisions. But with time, I’ve realised the importance of being unapologetic about your decisions,” says Arora, who turns 48 today.

Opening up about her birthday plans, she shares, “I am in no mood to celebrate this year, so I’ll have a quiet birthday at home with family and a few friends. There will be home-cooked food by my mom and that, for me, is the best kind of birthday.”

Meanwhile, Arora goes on to share that people always have something to say about her, but that doesn’t affect her anymore. “I don’t pay any attention to negative comments or trolls. It’s certainly challenging, but over the years, I’ve realised that not letting these unnecessary trolls get to you is the best way to be. Hence, I’ve chosen my happiness over anybody’s opinion about me. I have always been open-minded and non-judgmental,” she shares.

Arora admits that there was a time when others’ opinions bothered her, but not anymore. Revealing the mantra she follows, the actor shares, “With time, I have become more vocal about trolling, but fundamentally, I am unaffected. I have built this shield to protect me and my family that keeps me going. I am more certain about keeping my sanity than wasting it on something unsubstantial.”

Recently, there has been a huge shift in her personal life, with her son, Arhaan, 18, leaving India for studies. “The change has been difficult and it’s strange not to have him around. But, I’m proud of him for taking this step to embark on a new journey. I’m rooting for his success,” says Arora.

Malaika Arora, dazzling in a metallic dress, brought in her 46th birthday in style a day early at a suburban five-star on Tuesday. Famous friends turned up to wish her and while beau Arjun Kapoor was one of the first guests to arrive and among the last to leave, Malaika’s girl gang of sister Amrita Arora and Karisma and Kareena Kapoor, along with socialite Natasha Poonawalla also joined in the revelry.

At the party, the birthday girl was quoted as saying that this is the first time in the last six-seven years that she is in the city on D-Day so she decided to celebrate with friends and family. According to a guest at the party, Malaika had been planning it for almost a month. “Her buddies worked their schedules around to be there. Everyone who has been associated with her over the decades was on the guest list,” the source informs, describing it as a “perfect house party, only this one was hosted at a hotel.”

Cousins Janhvi and Shanaya Kapoor arrived together with bestie Ananya Panday. So did new BFFs Aadar Jain and Tara Sutaria, twinning in black. “Kareena, Karisma, Karan Johar and their friends stuck together as did these three childhood buddies,” adds the source.

Akshay Kumar with wife Twinkle Khanna stopped by for a while; Gauri Khan was also in attendance, so were Shweta Bachchan Nanda, Dino Morea, who is one of Malaika’s oldest friends, Karan Tacker and Riteish Deshmukh. Among the couples were Chunky and Bhavana Panday, Sanjay and Maheep Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra, Angad Bedi and Neha Dhupia, Rhea Kapoor and Karan Boolani and Arjun Rampal and Gabriella Demetriades. Arjun posted a picture with Malaika and his Kapoor namesake, quipping, “Mere Arjun aur Arjun aagaye.”

Malaika fed the first piece of her cake to son Arhaan. Besides cake, there was an elaborate buffet and an even bigger desserts station. While Malaika grooved to “Kaun Nachdi” from Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Arjun shook a leg to “Proper Patola” from Namaste England and Simmba’s “Aankh Maarey”. Shah Rukh Khan, arrived around 1.30 am and stayed for almost two hours, dancing on his Dil Se chartbuster “Chaiyya Chaiyya” with Malaika.

On Wednesday, Arjun Kapoor posted an image, Dil Se, from their Milan trip, adding a heart emoji. The couple is yet to make an official announcement, but online PDA has been the way to go for them for a while now.

Love in Italy for Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora?

MUMBAI MIRROR (October 25, 2018)

In the last few weeks, Arjun Kapoor and good friend Malaika Arora have been making heads turn after being spotted driving down in the same car and seated next to each other at a recent fashion show. And if that wasn’t enough to start tongues wagging, the duo walked out hand-in-hand and set the stage on fire when the actor was a guest on a talent hunt show which Malaika judges to promote his last release. Immediately after Namaste England opened, Arjun flew off to Italy. It was no coincidence that Malaika brought in her 45th birthday in the European country too and threw gossip mills into a spin by posting a picture against a graffiti wall with the word 'LOVE' in focus. The accompanying text read, “We found LOVE in a hopeless place…. He looks at me like nobody does with…”

She followed up this cryptic post on her return to Mumbai on Wednesday with one more picture, saying, “Soaking it all in n loving it…” Among the many 'likes' was one from Arjun too. He's been ‘liking’ many of her posts of late.

The picture-perfect moments had Karan Johar, her co-judge on India’s Got Talent, quizzing her on her return to the shoot from Europe, saying “What did you do there? How was your trip? Was it a trip?” The lady shot him and the camera a beatific smile and quipped, “It was trippy… It was blissful, if you must know,” before turning to the third judge, Kirron Kher, and thanking her for letting her take a day off to bring in her birthday. KJo was not done yet, and continued to probe, “The burning question is: Did you go alone?” and Malaika shot back, “Let that remain a burning question.” The exchange had Arjun’s uncle Sanjay Kapoor laughing out loud with emojis on the Insta post.

Is this an official confirmation that something is brewing? At a time when love is in the air, weddings are being announced and babies waiting to be delivered, one can only hope for another happily ever after in show town…
