Sajid Khan was such a creep-Mandana Karimi

Mandana Karimi recounts a 2014 meeting with the filmmaker, and working with Umesh Ghadge, who directed her in a 2016 project
As told to Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 13, 2018)

I was in talks for Sajid Khan’s (2014 film) Humshakals at the casting stage. My manager and I visited his office. After meeting producer Vashu Bhagnani, I was in a room with Sajid, when he said, “Lovely pictures but you need to remove your clothes. If I like what I see, you might get the part.” I laughed at the incident — Sajid was such a creep –when my manager pointed out that he was a big director. Be that as it may, you can’t abuse your power.

In 2016, I was shooting for Ekta Kapoor’s production Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, which was a dream come true. It was a big film for me, but I was made to feel miserable on the sets. The director, Umesh Ghadge, asked me out once and when I declined the offer, saying that I had a boyfriend — back then, I was dating my now ex-husband Gaurav Gupta – he made things difficult for me throughout the film’s Thailand schedule.

He’d keep me waiting on the sets and made fun of my dancing skills, saying that I couldn’t get the steps right as I’m not an Indian. I told Ekta about the problem and offered to return the money so that I could exit the project. She pulled him up, but he wasn’t fired. The harassment continued. Everyone on the sets knew what I was going through, but nobody said anything as they were afraid of losing their job. On the last day, everyone, from the makeup artists to spot boys, apologised to me.

'Principal sponsor' Balaji Motion Picture refuses to extend Mandana Karimi's work permit

Ekta Kapoor’s company is reportedly no longer backing the Iranian actress at her in-laws’ behest
Meena Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 20, 2017)

Mandana Karimi, who is doing the rounds of Mumbai courts after filing a domestic violence case (Mirror, July 5) against businessman husband of four months, Gaurav Gupta, has landed in a fresh soup. Mirror has learnt that time is running out on the Iranian model-actress’s India sojourn. “When she recently turned up for one of the court hearings, she requested the bench to fast-track the proceedings because she couldn’t stay in India for too long,” an insider revealed.

Mandana, who rose to fame with a stint on Bigg Boss 9 in 2015 that paved way for Hindi films like Bhaag Johnny and Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and a guest spot in the Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez-starrer Roy, has been in India on a work permit. And the last two times it came up for renewal, it was facilitated by Balaji Motion Pictures because she was working on their January 2016 release Kyaa Kool… Previously, Balaji, Mandana’s ‘principal sponsor’, had been instrumental in negotiating the contract for Bigg Boss.

Post marriage, she discontinued working, and was quoted as saying, “The decision was made at my husband’s behest.” Now, it has emerged that her sponsor has decided not to renew her work permit. Buzz is, the Guptas who own a company that specializes in post-production work and VFX and worked on Balaji’s Azhar, the Emraan Hashmi-starrer biopic of former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin, pressurized the latter to do so, arguing that the actress is not working with them anymore.

In the last couple of weeks, Mandana has been running from pillar to post to arrange for an extension on her work permit. Mirror tried reaching out to Mandana and Balaji but both parties chose not to comment.

We are not shutting down-Balaji Motion Pictures CEO Sameer Nair

After a trio of films didn't live up to expectations, Balaji CEO Sameer Nair reveals that focus will now be on digital, TV, newcomers and budgets
Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 30, 2016)

Balaji Motion Pictures has had five releases this year starting with the third instalment of the Kyaa Kool Hain Hum franchise, followed by the Azhar biopic, Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab, Great Grand Masti and the recently-released Tiger Shroff-starrer, A Flying Jatt. None of the films lived up to box-office expectations and now buzz is, the production house has decided to put film making on the back burner for now. Sameer Nair, group CEO of Balaji Telefilms refuted the rumour but admitted that they have grown more conscious of cost and feasibility.

"We are not shutting down, we have productions on the floor but will take stock of projects more closely now keeping commercial viability in mind. We have been trying to be more cost effective for some time now given the market conditions. The move wasn't prompted by the last few films, we have got more stringent over the last six months," insists Sameer.

He rues the leak of the censor copy of Great Grand Masti three weeks ahead of its release resulting in huge losses.

"Ditto Udta Punjab, though it did reasonably well. Azhar broke even, A Flying Jatt has just released and Half Girlfriend is next in line. It's business as usual but we will be cautious now," he admits.

Did roping in stars like Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt for Udta Punjab escalate the budget? Will they now focus on newcomers to control revenues?

"Yes, we would like to do that like everyone else. It's about finding the right combo of director, actors and content. For us content has always been king," reasons Sameer, adding that for now the focus is on ALT Balaji, the digital off-shoot of the company which will be launched by the year-end.

Sameer reveals that TV will continue to be the company's core competency. "Ekta has been breaking new ground on TV. Naagin was very successful and had record-breaking ratings. On weekends only format shows work but Ekta came up with a new genre for the slot. Brahmarakshas is doing really well," he exults.

Is the Censor Board killing the adult comedy genre in Bollywood?

Pahlaj Nihalani, chairperson of CBFC, however, maintains that they are not being unreasonable
Hiren Kotwani (BOMBAY TIMES; February 4, 2016)

Till barely a few years ago, adult comedies were lucrative box office propositions, following the success of Kyaa Kool Hain Hum, Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum and Grand Masti. However, with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) recommending a lot of cuts to certify movies like Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 (KKHH3) and Mastizaade, the genre seems to have taken a beating. The latest is that the CBFC has refused certification to Great Grand Masti on grounds of its adult content being too hot to handle. Industry folks attribute the rigidity to the current chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani, who, they feel is going overboard by following the archaic guidelines. Tusshar, who starred in KKHH3 (that was also his home production), says the recent censorship has come down strongly on this genre. “Distributors of KKHH3 told us the audience felt it was like a normal film and despite the 'A' rating, there was barely anything adult in it, unlike the first two instalments. The 100-plus cuts affected the film,“ he says. With a few outrageous gestures, skimpily-clad women and suggestive oohs and aahs, KKHH3, which positioned itself as India's first porn-com, lacked the porn and the com.

Rangita Nandy, producer of Mastizaade, which got its censor certificate after six months of going to Examining Committee (EC), Revising Committee (RC) and also Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), says, “Even today, it's difficult to make an adult comedy. We will always have a section of people saying this is the wrong kind of film for the social fabric of the country. However, as long as there's an audience for such movies, we will keep making them.“

Mahesh Bhatt believes his colleagues must stop complaining about the Censor Board's recommended deletion or revision. He says, “Even though we asked for an 'A' certificate for Love Games, the EC asked for 18 cuts. That wasn't acceptable to us so we approached the FCAT, which cleared our film with an 'A' certificate and no cuts.“

Though Tusshar concedes that CBFC members are doing their job and following prescribed guidelines, he also points out that the Board was considerably liberal and flexible a couple of years ago. He adds, “In lieu of the recent censorship of adult comedies, I would think twice before making another one. And after all the deletions, it will cease to be an 'adult comedy'. It will merely be an 'A'-certified film.“

Bhatt feels filmmakers should not be bullied by the Censor Board. He explains, “We want them to roll the red carpet and make things easier for us, which they won't. If you don't agree with the EC, you should go to the FCAT, which is more enlightened, independent, mature and dispassionate about its views. If you knock that door, I'm certain that despite the constraints of their guidelines, you will get away far easier there.“

Rangita's film was refused certification by even the FCAT before she began the entire exercise again. They finally got a certificate after agreeing to the 32 cuts asked for by the Censor Board. She says, “Though we have made adult films like Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Chameli before, Mastizaade was our first adult comedy. There was so much conversation about our film that this censorship issue was blown out of proportion.“ When asked if she would make another adult comedy despite the censor hurdles, she says, “Hell, yeah!

However, Pahlaj Nihalani, chairperson CBFC, maintains that they view and certify films on the basis of the content they get. “We don't know what the original content is and are not concerned with it. We see only what the producer submits. You should ask the producers how many cuts they made in their films before submission and how many cuts we asked for. They are the content providers, not us. If you check the complete history of the film's certification, you will see that we are not being unreasonable.“

Given the current scenario, we wonder when our India audience will be treated to an all-out sex-comedy?

Padma Bhushan Anupam Kher vows to steer clear of dubious films

Subhash K Jha (DNA; January 29, 2016)

“With such a prestigious recognition from the Government, comes a great responsibility,” says actor-author-activist Anupam Kher who has been awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government.

Kher, who until recently accepted all sorts of film roles including slapstick comedies has lately been saying no to lowbrow entertainment. Lately he turned down Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 after being part of the first two films in the series.

Says Anupam, “Yes, I refused Kya Kool Hain Hum 3. But it’s not because I’ve stopped enjoying low-brow comedies or other genres of mass entertainment. I am comfortable doing massy cinema but the audiences are not. Sometimes it is more important to live up to people’s expectation along with your own.”

The actor says he feels the change within himself, “My work and various activities give me my identity. 90 per cent of what one does, is monotony. It’s that other 10 per cent which gives meaning to one’s existence. My father, a clerk in the forestry department, spent 35 years of his life doing the same work every day, with the same enthusiasm every day until he retired. I imbibed the sense of discipline and dedication towards my work from my father. Therefore I dedicate my Padma Bhushan to my father.”

Without naming Karan Johar, Anupam Kher criticises the filmmaker for his recent comments on intolerance and a lack of freedom of expression in India. “For people who move around in high-end cars with bouncers and security guards, to even mention intolerance is ridiculous! To say freedom of expression in our country is the biggest joke of all, as those complaining are the ones who have never known a day’s check on their freedom.”

Anupam was missing in director David O’Russell’s Joy which brought together the entire core cast of Russell’s highly-acclaimed Silver Linings Playbook, except Anupam. Says Anupam, “I did ask David why I was not part of Joy. He said he didn’t want to waste me. I agree with him. I don’t want to be wasted in anything I do.”

MASTIZAADE VS SAALA KHADOOS!

Just like last week, this Friday too will see the clash of the following 2 films:

MASTIZAADE: This is a sex comedy directed by Milap Zaveri and stars Sunny Leone, Tusshar Kapoor and Vir Das. This is unlike other adult comedies made in Bollywood – the humour is more in your face and revolves around erection, animal sex etc. It is, hence, not surprising that a section of audience was put off by the trailers. Songs haven’t become huge hits. The costs are reasonable as per reports and the opening can be decent like last week’s sex comedy Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3. But Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 showed that although there is an excitement for sex comedies, such films can fall heavily if reports are bad. Hence, Mastizaade has to be a very good film to excel at the ticket window.

SAALA KHADOOS: This film is produced by Rajkumar Hirani and along with R Madhavan, it also stars Ritika Singh, who is also a real-life boxer. The film has a very aggressive tone, but it looks very impressive, at least from the trailers. Madhavan’s look is sexy and his chemistry with Ritika will be something to watch out for. The dialogues are powerful and the film talks about some important issues which can make for a great watch. The opening sadly won’t be huge as the excitement is hardly there. But the film can pick up and grow and maybe turn out to the dark horse of the year.

My being locked up inside Bigg Boss house was best publicity for KKHH3-Mandana Karimi

BOMBAY TIMES (January 26, 2016)

Iranian beauty Mandana Karimi, who got out of Bigg Boss (BB) on Saturday night after being locked up for three-and-a-half months, started promoting Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, that is directed by Umesh Ghadge with Tusshar and Aftab Shivdasani in the lead, just a few hours later.

The first thing you notice on seeing her walk in your direction is that her bikini curves are missing! She has lost five kilos during the reality show ordeal, but her face unmistakably wears a pretty pink glow. So have you seen KKHH 3? “No,“ she wails, “I got to bed at 5 am and I have just been told that I have a screening of my movie for the Bigg Boss gang. So I guess, I too will see the film with them.“

Ask her whether she fretted over Ekta Kapoor's court case against her and Mandana replies, “At first, I didn't understand the implication. When you are locked up, it is hard to keep up with the news. However, when I learnt about it from Tusshar and Aftab who came on my show, I knew that I wasn't in the wrong. I had signed a contract to stay inside the house till I was evicted and everyone knew that. I guess no one believed that I would survive the entire duration.“ But wasn't it foolish on her part to miss the promotions of her first big Bollywood release? “To the contrary,“ she replies, “Being locked up inside the BB house was godsend. For 105 days, I was top of mind for hundreds of thousands across the globe. That according to me is the best publicity for the film.“

Ask her whether she is upset at having lost out to Prince Narula and she says, “No, I think I'm a winner. During my 105-day stay, I won 11 nominations and survived eviction till the end. That means I am already a winner. I met so many fans when I got out and all of them said, 'Mandana, we respect you because you are a strong woman. You managed beautifully inside the house despite all the odds being stacked against you.“ Her face breaks into a big smile as she says, “In my head, I was also Bigg Boss' favourite. However, Salman Khan is a very fair host and he never shows his bias.“

Talking of how she is going to miss the reality show for a long time to come, the actress continues, “I loved being on the show. Though I had no friends in the house and was perhaps the most hated person inside, I will miss everything from the swimming pool to the kitchen. I will miss those cameras and tasks. However, what I will miss most are my chats with the Bigg Boss.“

Suddenly, tears stream down her rosy cheeks and when you tease her that she was labelled the cry baby of the show and accused of weeping copiously for TRPs, she petulantly quips “I'm a sensitive girl, not a dramebaaz. Even Bigg Boss understood that.“

One hears that the first thing she got after she came out of BB was a big hug from her boyfriend. “Yes, that's true,“ she says, “Inside the house, no one gave me any hugs or presents. As you know, people kept their distance from me. Even when I took ill, I got no visitors. I truly missed getting affection. But when I came out, my boyfriend (Gaurav Gupta) gave me a warm hug. It was very emotional.“

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, produced by Alt Entertainment, is currently playing in theatres across India.

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 has an edge over Airlift in terms of screen count?

Airlift, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, Airlift vs Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, Akshay Kumar, Nimrat Kaur
Gaurav Dubey (MID-DAY; January 22, 2016)

In the first box office clash of the year, Akshay Kumar’s patriotic drama Airlift takes on Ekta Kapoor’s porn-com, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum (KKHH) 3 today. While there is more or less an equal level of hype surrounding both films, trade sources say KKHH 3 has the edge as far as the screen count is concerned.

“The two films belong to completely different genres and will cater to different segments of the audience.
However, KKHH 3 has better chances of doing well since it is releasing on 2,200-2,500 screens. Airlift, on the other hand, has managed to get around 1,800-2,000 screens,” reveals a trade source.

Aman Gill, CEO of Balaji Telefilms which is producing KKHH 3, claims the buzz created by the trailer, songs and franchise value of the sex comedy has lead to exhibitors wanting to give it a wide release. “It is set to release on 2,200-plus screens with 70 per cent of single screens choosing to run it,” he says.

Prashant Tiwari, all India distributor for Airlift, however, says that Airlift has bagged more than 3,000 screens across the country. “Both single screens and multiplexes have decided to give maximum screens to Airlift. Advance booking trends are phenomenal and higher than recent Akshay Kumar openers. Audience demand is high across centres,” he adds.

AIRLIFT VS KYAA KOOL HAIN HUM 3

The first major clash of 2016 is all set to happen tomorrow. My analysis:

AIRLIFT: It stars Akshay Kumar and in the leading role and is based on the world's biggest civil evacuation - evacuation of Indians based in Kuwait during the Iraq-Kuwait war. The incident has a mention in the Guinness World Records and if made well, it can turn out to be a great engaging film. Also, for the viewers, it can be a nice experience since not much is known about the incident. It has the advantage of a holiday on Tuesday (Republic Day) which goes well with the patriotic mood of the movie. However, it’s not a massy film and that can affect the film’s collections despite the great word of mouth. Last year, Akshay Kumar’s Baby released at the same time and despite the excellent word mouth, it failed to even cross the Rs 100 crore mark. Airlift might follow suit. There are talks that the movie can get tax free status which will be very beneficial. But Baby was a solo release while Airlift faces competition from Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3. Hence Airlift might have a tough time.

KYAA KOOL HAIN HUM 3: This is the 3rd part of a popular sex comedy series. The first 2 parts were commercial successes and hence, the 3rd part too can strike gold. Instead of Riteish Deshmukh, there’s Aftab Shivdasani in the film. Tusshar Kapoor remains while Mandana Karimi is the lead actress. Her hot, bikini clad avatar is the talk of the town and instantly grabbed eyeballs. The film’s trailer is hilarious and has worked with the target audience. The grand success of Grand Masti has made everyone realize how much an adult comedy can excel. Hence, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 can make a mark at the box office and give stiff competition to Airlift. If however the response to the film is bad, it is sure to fall down after initial euphoria.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE AIRLIFT OR KYAA KOOL HAIN HUM 3 AND WHY?

Everything is sanskari about Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3-Tusshar Kapoor and Aftab Shivdasani

Madhureeta Mukherjee (BOMBAY TIMES; January 15, 2016)

Tusshar Kapoor and Aftab Shivdasani the porn stars who will tease, tickle and make your funny bone moan with their madness. With a triple dose of spoofs, goofs and uproarious sexcapades - in the upcoming sex comedy Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, proudly called a 'porn-com' by the makers. Tusshar and Affy, who play adult movie stars in film, tell us all about the bard of the bawdy, the sanskar in this sex comedy and the taboo around it. And how all they want you to do is shake off your cares and watch their wares while they 'pornicate' your sensibility - with puns galore. It's a roll...

At the outset, there is nothing sanskari about this movie, right?
Aftab: Everything is sanskari about this film. In fact, the whole family featured in it is sanskari. They do what they do because they have to. Otherwise, they are absolutely normal people.
Tusshar: The moral of the story is don't judge a book by its cover. People should be known by their seerat (inner self) not by their soorat or profession. You don't have to judge someone for being a porn star.

The film is being called a porn-com. The first time I heard it I thought it was popcorn. Will our eyes really pop out while watching your antics on screen?
Aftab: I was going to say it's porn for the entire family, but it's not (laughs). It is a porn family that eats together, drinks together and sleeps together (no pun intended). It is basically a 'porntertainer'. I just made that up, not bad, eh?
Tusshar: Other than all the madness, confusion and coolness that ensues between two families, there are also adult spoofs of Bollywood blockbusters. This concept is a thriving industry in Hollywood where the biggest films are spoofed.

Any fear that a film like this could get too outrageous, too raunchy?
Tusshar: If you focus just on the gags, then it won't work because everything has to be part of a smooth story. A lot of people feel that sex comedies are a shortcut to success. It is quite the contrary. Comedy itself is no mean feat, and here we are doing a sex comedy in a country like ours where people are so sensitive. Without naming them, there are some recently released sex comedies that had the potential of shock value, but they didn't work. So if a film in this genre is not made well, it can fall apart like a pack of cards. It is risqué and risky.
Aftab: Exactly! If we try to force the humour or innuendo on somebody, then it is a problem. But if it is already there at the script level and we are enacting it, with the sole intention of making it look genuinely funny and not vulgar - then we can crack it without being offensive. It is a thin line.

Though in the West this genre is widely accepted and enjoyed, in India a section of our audience still cringe at the idea.
Aftab: I think the problem is with the term 'sex comedy', that's why it is taboo. It should be rephrased as 'adult comedy'. There are a lot of jokes in the film that are beyond sex and not just about sex. If we say adult comedy, it encapsulates everything, not just sexual jokes.
Tusshar: Yes, the term throws people off. Big Hollywood stars like Robert De Niro, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford and Ben Stiller have done he most outrageous films, and alongside, they also do their gangster movies and all other kinds of roles. Why do we differentiate between dilms and call them highbrow or lowbrow. A lot of actors say... I don't want my kids to watch his, I would be embarassed. Whenever I have kids, I won't force them to watch the films that I have done. But they should respect what I do and not cringe at my body of work. I am doing it for the audience.

Both of you have found a foothold in this genre. Are you comfortable with it?
Aftab: I don't think I have found my foothold in this genre. Yes, the sex comedies we have done have worked, but I have done different kinds of comedy and other films too. So has Tusshar. We don't want to discard our universal audience and only stick to this genre.

Well, a lot of people enjoy such comedies, but they just don't want to talk about it. Maybe double standards, or stigma?
Aftab: That is changing. A large section of people wanted to pan Grand Masti as they thought it would be too vulgar. But they went to the theatre and laughed their hearts out. In fact, it was the women audience that made the film successful. The hubbies or boyfriends are usually worried about what the ladies will say about such a film. The moment the women start enjoying the humour, the men around them feel cool and comfortable about it.

Sex comedies are often not so flattering to women, and are also blamed for objectifying them. Your take?
Tusshar: Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 is not objectifying women; in fact we are the ones who are objectified here. The purpose is not to objectify a man or a woman. The idea is to make people laugh with situations that are bizarre and outrageous.

Most sex comedies in India are not so critic-friendly. Are you boys prepared to take it on?
Aftab: Most of my films aren't (laughs out loud!). We are not expecting reviews for this film. Why should it even be reviewed? Let people decide if they want to watch it.
Tusshar: I don't get upset with the reviews for such films. Aftab is right...there should be some films which are not reviewed at all. Not a bad idea! A film like this should be reviewed like other films in this genre, and not compared with any other kind of film.

GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN POSTPONED…ONE FRIDAY GOES WASTE!

It was last Tuesday (January 5) that the makers of Ghayal Once Again decided to postpone the release of their film from January 15 to February 5. The exact reason is not known but it led to a very peculiar situation. In an industry where filmmakers fight for Fridays and end up clashing their films with each other, there’s no major release scheduled for tomorrow. Only one film hits screens from tomorrow – Chalk N Duster, starring Juhi Chawla, Shabana Azmi and Divya Dutta.

What’s also interesting to note that the next 2 Fridays will see major clashes. While Airlift will clash with Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 on January 22, Mastizaade and Saala Khadoos will release together on January 29. Out of these 4 films, at least one of them could have shifted their date to January 15. If the makers of Ghayal Once Again had postponed their film even a day or two earlier, this could have been possible. Moreover, Wazir has failed too. So the film releasing today would have got sufficient screens.

Our industry really has to catch up when it comes to planning. Until that happens, clashes will keep on happening, films will keep getting postponed. In short our industry will keep getting Ghayal Once Again

Check out a few things in Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 that the Censor Board found offensive

Gaurav Dubey (MID-DAY; January 14, 2016)

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, touted as India’s first porn-com, may not turn out to be as titillating as intended to be. The Censor Board has effected 34 cuts (contrary to reports suggesting 150 cuts) in the film which is set to hit theatres next week. This, despite the makers themselves having asked for an ‘A’ certificate. We give you details of a few allegedly obscene scenes/dialogues that got the Board’s goat and were removed from the film:

Abhishek’s character was earlier called Horny Singh, but it had to be changed to Mickey Singh. Well, what will you call Mickey if he’s feeling horny? Sick-y Singh? Because if you are thinking of sex, you’ve got to be sick.

A major chunk of the song Oh Boy picturised on Tusshar Kapoor and Mandana Karimi was deleted, since the board felt that a few hand movements resembled the act of masturbation. Oh boy, why don’t we just ban masturbation!

A 30-second orgasmic scene featuring Gizele Thakral was cut down to eight seconds. After all, why should girls have so much fun?

In one of the spoofs, Giselle refers to the 1960 classic Mughal-E-Azam as Mughal-E-Orgasm. But the makers were asked to delete the word ‘orgasm’

Now, listen to this: Tusshar Kapoor is seen dressed up as Devil à la and the film was called Dick. The Censor Board got it changed to Lick. That makes it so much better, doesn't it?

Mandana's dialogue "Tum mere andar ho" (You are inside me) was changed to a vague "Tum mere yahaan ho" (you are here with me). And then a shimmy act in which one of the girls shakes her breasts was reduced.

I&B ministry intervenes directly in Censor certification of Mastizaade, KKHH 3?

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; January 13, 2016)

Rapid developments in the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) are indicative of big changes to come in censorship policies.

Sources say the Ministry Of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has taken direct charge of certification and is ensuring that no producer’s film is subjected to radical or even nominal cuts. Apparently disgruntled producers have now taken the I&B route to bypass the Censor Board.

Says a reliable source in CBFC, “Films with objectionable content like Mastizaade, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 and Miss Teacher which is a graphic story of a nymphomaniac teacher, have all been cleared due to the direct intervention of the I&B ministry.” Producers of the above films had “complained” to the I&B ministry when asked for cuts in the obscene content.

Adds the source, “The CBFC has been told not to cut scenes/dialogues in these films. The CBFC has been reduced to a helpless pawn.”

Censor Board didn't recommend 150 cuts in Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3-Editor Nitin Rokade

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 13, 2016)

Nitin Rokade who has edited several David Dhawan films, including Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Partner and Chashme Baddoor, has known Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 director Umesh Ghadge for years. Umesh had discussed the film with him back in August 2014 when the film was still being scripted. "Since I was always a part of the film, Umesh didn't need to brief me on anything in particular as both of us come from the same school of filmmaking," says Nitin.

They began filming in January 2015. Usually the editing starts after the shooting ends, but in this case they had an editing table on the sets. "I used to edit as the film was being shot and scenes we weren't convinced about were re-shot on the go," reveals Nitin, who had the initial cut of the first schedule in his hands by the time they returned to the bay after wrapping up a month-long schedule in Bangkok. "Since this is Umesh's first film we didn't want to take any chances."

Given that it's being hyped as a porn-comedy, did they have to be extra careful? "It's not as adult as people believe. What we had to be cautious about while editing was not to lose out on the comic element. The challenges were mostly technical, usually having to merge shots taken in different locations." says Nitin, admitting that despite knowing Umesh well, they had their share of disagreements. "While shooting the big romantic number, Oh Boy, I suggested we have all the actors but Umesh wanted to feature only Tusshar (Kapoor) and Mandana (Karimi). I argued and managed to convince him," says the editor of 18 years.

The film ran into censor problems with the first trailer itself and was reportedly recommended 150 cuts. Replacing those shots must have been a huge headache for him, "There weren't 150 cuts, we only had to delete a few dialogues. Most of what we shot was retained," he says unconvincingly.

Nitin's next is Rohit Dhawan's Dishoom featuring Varun Dhawan and John Abraham. He will also start working on his Marathi directorial debut soon.

Ekta Kapoor to sue Mandana Karimi for not not adhering to her contract

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 12, 2016)

Iranian actress Mandana Karimi has been the talk of the town thanks to her micro-mini bikini antics, both inside and outside the Bigg Boss house. But now, Mirror has learnt, that her complete absence of time management skills have rubbed the makers of her upcoming film, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, the wrong way.

"Mandana is one of the film's leading ladies, opposite Aftab Shivdasani and Tusshar Kapoor, and her contract has a clause that requires her to allot at least 10 days for the film's promotions. Before going on the reality show, she paid producer Ekta Kapoor a visit and was clearly informed that the film would release anytime between January and February. But she has made no effort to come out of the house and honour her agreement," informed a disgruntled source from the production house.

Mandana, who was seen in blink-and-miss appearances in Roy, Bhaag Johnny and Main Aur Charles, has a three-film contract with the production house. "We are happy that the TV show has made her popular but Mandana has contractually committed to us and will have to adhere by it. She had signed with us much before entering the house," informed CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures, Aman Gill.

MEANWHILE...

Another producer comes to the actress's rescue

Filmmaker Anand Kumar, who rolls with a film based on social media, Viral, next month however is super impressed with the leggy Mandana and is all set to cast her as the lead. "She is bold, beautiful, text-savvy and will connect with today's youngsters who are using Skype, Tinder, Whatsapp. Today, communication is all about sharing pictures and sending the same selfie to 10 people around you. But the young boy in my film is a novice to social communication and the story is about how all this affects him," informs the writer-producer who plans to shoot in Delhi, Mumbai and Goa, beginning next month. "I'm waiting for Mandana to finish her stint in the Bigg Boss house before finalising the modalities and locking her dates."

ABCD actor Raghav Juyal, known for his slow-motion, break dance moves, is opposite her. Raghav's character compiles all his experiences with social media into a book, Viral, which explains the title," adds Anand.

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3: Meet sizzling Mandana Karimi's kool pug Suckru

BOMBAY TIMES (January 11, 2016)

Forget the actors; even the dog in Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 is making his notorious comeback in the third part. The makers believe the pug, which is called Suckru, is a lucky charm for the franchise. Hence, they ensured he has a prominent role in the film. Last time, he was Riteish Deshmukh's pet. This time around, he plays Mandana Karimi's pet in the film.

Tusshar Kapoor shot with real-life adult stars for Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3

Sonil Dedhia (BOMBAY TIMES; January 7, 2016)

Tusshar and Aftab Shivdasani will be seen playing adult stars in their upcoming film Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3. While the movie was being shot, the makers decided to use real porn stars for a few sequences. Director Umesh Ghadge recalls, “Tusshar's and Aftab's characters in the film will be seen doing naughty spoofs of popular Bollywood films. For some of the sequences in Bangkok we needed other artistes too. Here, we decided to rope in porn stars to stick to the mood of the film. And it was such a blast shooting with them.“

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3's naughty song Oh Boy gets a feminist touch

BOMBAY TIMES (January 5, 2015)

Women empowerment is rearing its head and how. Feisty film producer Ekta Kapoor is spearheading this movement. A naughty track from her porncom Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, which releases on January 22, is being noticed for its titillating lyrics. The song, featuring Mandana Karimi with Tusshar and Aftab Shivdasani, has the Iranian beauty lip syncing to Oh boy you are my soft toy. But the original lyrics were Oh boy I am your soft toy. When Ekta heard the song, she told music composers Sajid-Wajid that she loved it but felt the need for one change. Instead of the girl taking a weaker position, Ekta suggested that she should get the upper hand. So, the lyrics were changed accordingly; the song was re-recorded and then shot.

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3's new song is too hot for television

BOMBAY TIMES (January 2, 2016)

Leaving behind sanskaari times in 2015, the makers of Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 are making sure that their brand of irreverent humour remains unaffected by moral diktats. After their naughty trailer took social media by storm, the makers have decided to release their racy new song Oh Boy, only online. The song, with its double meaning lyrics (Oh boy you are my soft toy) and smoking hot visuals, has obviously got an 'A' certificate. A source from the film's production house tells us, “We're working on toning it down for TV audiences, but until then, the 'not so soft' version can be viewed online.“ Now, that's a smart move!

Boom boom: Bollywood is itching for a clash this year

Meena Iyer & Hiren Kotwani (BOMBAY TIMES; January 1, 2016)

Oh, don't let all their camaraderie fool you. Bollywood egos are legendary. And in their own heads, each superstar imagines that the sun first rises outside his bedroom. So while it may be fine to clink glasses and show each other how “they love one another“ on social media, actors are actually spoiling for fights in their own way.

The latest weapon they have found to declare war on one another is a release date. All Bollywood biggies know that when their films clash on the same date, catastrophe will strike. But do they care? No. It's the law of the jungle - may the mightier one win. Of course, there is no denying that there are only 52 Fridays available in a calendar year and at least 150 films are vying for these dates. It is a well-known fact that dates like Republic Day, Eid, Diwali, Independence Day and Christmas weekends are also coveted because they bring in huge box office numbers.

The last face-off of 2015 between Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale left many people within the trade red-faced. So will good sense prevail in 2016? “No way,“ says a trade insider. He adds, “Clashes are starting as early as January this year. Airlift and Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 have both decided to release on January 22.“

Throwing light on the situation, the source says, “Let's give the devil his due. Even if we do not look at it as an ego thing, clashes are inevitable. There are as many as 10 films lined up for release in January. The month that was years ago called jinxed January has now gone on to become jammed January because of the rush at the marquee.“

If you're wondering what are the two questions on everyone's mind in Bollywood, then they are: Will Raees and Sultan clash on Ramzan Eid as announced earlier? And will Karan Johar and Ajay Devgn bring Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay together on Diwali?

In all fairness, SRK had hinted in an interview that the release date of Raees could be shifted. Will it then move to the Independence Day weekend? If it does, then what happens to movies like Akshay Kumar's Rustom and Hrithik Roshan's Mohenjo Daro? Will they automatically shift to October 2?

Forget the biggies clashing; even debutants may not be spared. It is being said that Harshvardhan Kapoor's (Anil Kapoor's son) Mirzya may have to vie with Emraan Hashmi's Azhar for a piece of the pie on May 13.

Akshay, by virtue of the fact that he does a minimum of three films a year, is bound to clash with more than one hero. If all goes as per plan, after he has clashed with Tusshar in January, his Housefull 3, which is the first big-ticket venture post the Indian Premier League, is expected to clash with lovebirds Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif 's Jagga Jasoos. Not to forget, Emraan Hashmi's Raaz Rebooted also wants a window here.

Producer-distributor N R Pachisia sums up saying two big-ticket films should avoid clashing together. He explains, “With films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK and Dhoom 3, we have seen strong solo releases registering huge numbers. When two films release together, the business gets divided. The better film gets higher numbers. I believe such clashes should be avoided as collections get split up and comparison kills.“

But do prima donnas care? No, they continue to pretend that they are the only ones in the orbit. Others with whom they 'party with' are incidental.
