Streamers now shoot for satellite rights to step up play

Move helps players in reducing competition with linear TV, besides giving them opportunity to monetize these rights later
Rajesh N Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; February 23, 2026)
Mumbai: Pure-play streamers have begun actively exploring and acquiring satellite rights, particularly for mid- and small-budget movies, over the past two months, according to producers and legal experts involved in negotiating these deals, marking a shift that could further cement the growing dominance of such platforms in the film distribution ecosystem.
A partner at a leading law firm in India said that, in the past two months, both pure and hybrid streamers had been showing clear interest in buying satellite rights.
"If streamers are in an advantageous position, then they ask for satellite rights. But if producers are in a precarious situation, then they bundle satellite rights with digital rights and sell them to streamers," said the lawyer, who didn't want to be named.
India's cinema ecosystem is witnessing a structural shift, said Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director, Karmic Films.
"Streaming platforms are moving upstream in the content value chain," he said. "Streamers are increasingly acquiring digital streaming and satellite rights, sometimes across all languages."
He cited films such as Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 and Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu (for all languages), the satellite and digital rights of which were acquired by streamers JioHotstar and Zee5, respectively.
According to film trade analysts, valuations of satellite and digital rights have changed considerably, largely because of meagre growth in television advertising (less than 5%) compared with the digital space (growing at over 20%). Consequently, digital rights contribute at least 75% of a film's non-theatrical revenue, followed by satellite rights, which contribute 20-25%, analysts said.
Also, the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star has triggered a power shift as it has reduced opportunities for producers in satellite deals. "Today, satellite rights valuations have declined sharply, in the range of 80-90% in many cases," said producer Sunil Bohra, cofounder of Bohra Brothers. "Channels have become more selective in acquiring films. In this ecosystem, producers can no longer rely on satellite rights as a primary revenue stream. Therefore, producers are bundling satellite rights with digital rights and selling them to streamers."
Apart from the declining valuation of satellite rights, another factor behind pure streaming platforms buying satellite rights is their competition with linear television players. "For pure-play streaming platforms, acquiring linear rights is a defensive masterstroke," said Anushree Rauta, equity partner and head of media, entertainment and gaming practice at ANM Global. "By 'ring-fencing' content, these platforms can effectively limit competition with linear television to preserve digital exclusivity and drive subscriber growth."
In addition to reducing competition with television and enabling the migration of traditional TV audiences to streaming platforms, streamers may monetize these rights in the future, producers said.
"Streamers are building multi-language catalogues that can be monetized later through syndication, bundled licensing or strategic broadcasting deals," Wadhwa said.
(Crisp) Movie Review: KIS KISKO PYAAR KAROON 2 by FENIL SETA

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2's trailer promised a laugh-riot and thankfully, the film fulfills expectations. Making this film is a challenge, especially to show how the protagonist ends up marrying thrice, that too in three different religions. Thankfully, writer-director Anukalp Goswami takes care of this aspect and makes it convincing as per the zone of the film. This is one of those 'leave your brains at home' kind of flick as the goings-on are outrageous and illogical. But who cares as long as it's making the viewers laugh? Sadly, in some scenes, the writer-director takes this aspect a bit too far, and that's where the film falters. Also, the songs are weak. Performance-wise, Kapil Sharma is brilliant as expected. Manjot Singh (Hubby), Vipin Sharma and Akhilendra Mishra lend able support. From the girls, Tridha Choudhary (Meera) gets the maximum screen space (and also an additional song) and she leaves a mark. Hira Warina (Sania), Parul Gulati (Jenny) and Ayesha Khan (Ruhi) are decent. Sushant Singh is superb as always. Jamie Lever (Santosh) and Jimmy Moses (Eunuch) bring the house down with their antics. Late Asrani is too good. All in all, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 is worth watching for all those who enjoy madcap capers and who miss 90s Govinda comedy-type films.
My rating - *** ½ out of 5!

WILL KIS KISKO PYAAR KAROON 2 EXCEL DESPITE THE DHURANDHAR WAVE?
Kapil Sharma made a superb debut with the 2015 comic caper Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon. It opened at Rs. 7.68 crores, surpassing all expectations. The film was made at limited costs and it ended up collecting Rs. 42.12 crores in its lifetime, which was a decent amount. Hence, a lot is expected from its sequel, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, which will release tomorrow, Friday, December 12.
Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon brings back Kapil Sharma and this time, he’s joined by Manjot Singh, Hira Warina, Tridha Choudhary, Parul Gulati, Ayesha Khan and the late Asrani. The trailer is very funny and it brings back the joy of the '90s comic capers featuring Govinda.
Sadly, the buzz for the film is very low. There’s limited awareness of its release and moreover, last week’s Dhurandhar has become a surprise blockbuster. It had a slow start, but now, it has picked up big time and will be the first choice for the moviegoers in Week 2 as well. This has further dented the prospects of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2.
Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 is expected to open around Rs. 2-3 crores, which is too low, especially considering the opening the first part had, that too more than 10 years ago. Hopefully, if the word of mouth is positive, it’ll see a jump in the collections over the weekend and then hold steady over the week.
As for Dhurandhar, it had a modest start, collecting Rs. 24 crores on Friday. On Saturday, it jumped to Rs. 27 crores while on Sunday, it collected Rs. 35 crores. On Monday, films usually fall by 50%. But Dhurandhar collected Rs. 20.50 crores. On Tuesday, it stunned the trade as it earned Rs. 25 crores, despite no Tuesday discount offer.
Dhurandhar has collected Rs. 132 crores and the first week collections will be around Rs. 175 crores. If it holds strongly in Week 2, it can cross the Rs. 300 crore mark and even go beyond.

Anyone who has watched the trailer of Kapil Sharma’s upcoming film, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, will agree that it brings back memories of David Dhawan’s comedies from the 1990s. Director Anukalp Goswami instantly agrees, adding that his knowledge of filmmaking is rooted in those movies.
“My training ground was Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chatterjee, and then David Dhawan films. Watching their movies was my schooling. For the last 15–16 years, from Comedy Circus to The Great Indian Kapil Show, I’ve been directing pure comedies,” he says.
Goswami insists that the December 12 release — also starring Manjot Singh, Hira Warina, and Tridha Choudhary — is rooted in that lineage of feel-good, family-friendly humour. But it is his leading man’s comic timing that is central to the story.
“Kapil has worked so much in non-fiction that his comic timing comes naturally. He knows exactly how much the scene requires. He improvises beautifully, but he also knows when to hold back. Akshay Kumar and Govinda are great artistes in comedy, and after them, Kapil is great. When I worked with him, I saw a star in him.”

Kapil Sharma to reprise his role in the sequel of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon; shoot to wrap up in a two-month schedule, and will also be shot at international locations
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; January 26, 2025)
The comedian-actor Kapil Sharma returns to the screen with the sequel to Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015). After months of searching, the makers have found the leading lady in television actor Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia, marking her debut in Hindi films. Director Anukalp Goswami kicked off the shoot yesterday, with Ahluwalia set to join the crew in February. The team has planned a two-month-long schedule spanning Mumbai and international locations.
A source reveals, “Kapil will juggle the new season of the Netflix show, The Kapil Sharma Show with the film shoot. After Zwigato [2023] and Crew [2024], the actor is keen to headline a film. He loved the script and decided to do it this year.”
The actor, who is a household name thanks to his comedy specials, reprises his role in this sequel. Insiders confirm that the film will retain its comedy-of-errors theme but with a fresh twist.
The source adds, “The shoot for Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 will follow a packed two-month schedule. The team starts filming in Mumbai before moving to international locations, giving the sequel a grander scale. The makers hope to wrap production within 45 days.”
The team aims to finish principal photography by April, eyeing a potential release later this year
