KALANK which has flopped in India has proved to be SUPER HIT film in the United Kingdom. The film is the ninth highest grossing film in the market over the last three and a half years (2016 - 2019) and it ranks up there with some very successful films.

Its a weird situation that a film totally rejected by the Indian audience has emerged a huge hit in the hardest market for Hindi films in recent times. A £500k total for Hindi films has become a task in this market today when it was achieved regularly a decade back. This is mainly due to loyalty cards from the big chains which leads to discounted amount given as the gross when the loyalty cards are used. KALANK has somehow managed to do business in the United Kingdom and will finish very close to the £1 million mark which has been achieved by only 8 films in since 2016.

PADMAAVAT deserves credit for the £2 million plus business which came outside Xmas and Eid which are the best periods for Hindi film business as this can be seen most of the films below are Xmas or Eid releases.

KALANK saw another big drop in business with collections of 15-20 lakh nett and is looking to add another 1-1.50 crore nett for a finish of only 80 crore nett which will mean around 25% of its business came on day one.

THE TASHKENT FILES is steady and is an AVERAGE fair. The collections of this film on the fourth Friday were pretty similar to the first day. It picked up around 30-35 lakhs nett on its fourth Friday. The film is looking to comfortably cross the 15 crore nett mark and may even get close to 20 crore nett depending on how the next few weeks unfold.

KALANK dropped badly in its second week as it collected only 6.50 crore nett and even this came as AVENGERS: ENDGAME could only release on 2k theaters. This means KALANK kept more screens that it normally would. The drop is a huge 91% from its extended first week and the film will probably finish at around the 80 crore nett mark.

THE TASHKENT FILES has done steady business for three weeks despite KALANK releasing in its second week and AVENGERS: ENDGAME releasing in its third. On top these low grossing films need the reviewers to support with the stars to to do some business but this film is doing without media support. The third week business of the film is better than the first week and it has done 11.50 crore nett business till now with more to come.

KALANK had a poor first week as it collected 74 crore nett in its extended first week as it fell after a good start and could not recover over the weekend. The weekday business of the film could have been worse but as its election time and the film got a boost in areas where there was an election as it was a holiday in that area. It added minimal amounts but it meant the weekdays were actually better than what would have been expected considering the weekend.

The film is going nowhere with AVENGERS: ENDGAME releasing which will conquer the market. The only bright plus for KALANK will be that AVENGERS: ENDGAME will release on 2K theatres because if it was allowed to release on all theatres then the business of KALANK would have been practically nothing.

KALANK did a little better in the bigger circuits of Mumbai and Delhi/UP while Mysore was also good for the first five days. The worst performance was East Punjab considering it is a multiplex dominated circuit. The second Friday will tell how much the film will add after the first week and it wont be much.

The bright spot is non theatrical revenue which is coming to the aid of most big banner films when they don't perform at the box office and KALANK is no different. The film picked up around 85 crore from satellite, digital and music which is the life saver as far as recovery is concerned. The worldwide share will be less than the non theatrical revenue with 60 crore coming but you take a 140-150 crore recovery on a rejected film.

The business in Overseas is better with the week looking to close at around $6.25 million helped by the Easter holidays. The film is actually done very good business in United Kingdom and may be among the top five films in UK over the last year or so. Its mainly UK and US doing better in Overseas due to the Easter holidays and the look of the film holding more appeal in these markets.

The film has also been lucky with the extended five day weekend because if it was normal weekend then the film would have earned 12-15 crore nett less than it will do now.

KALANK had a big drop on its second Friday with collections being just 60 lakhs nett as the rejection coupled with the release AVENGERS: ENDGAME meant just a one week run for the film with limited screenings in week two. The film will finish a little under the 80 crore nett mark for its lifetime business.

KALANK collected 3.25 crore nett on Tuesday taking its total to 69 crore nett plus. There is only a 10% drop but the collections are low and it will suffer when AVENGERS: ENDGAME releases on Friday. The extended first week collections of the film should go to around 74 crore nett but will be limited shows thereafter.

The film had an extended five day weekend which has actually helped the film get this far. if it was a normal weekend then the collections would be far lower as the weekday collections would probably have come down to these levels regardless of a normal weekend or extended weekend.

The best business for the film will come in Mumbai and Mysore with West Bengal also holding better on weekdays.

KALANK fell badly on Monday as it collected 3.50 crore nett but it was expected as collections were poor after day one. This takes the total of the film to 66 crore nett and the week should finish at around 74-75 crore nett in its extended nine day week. AVENGERS: ENDGAME is releasing on Friday which will limit the business post the first week. Not that it would have got numbers even if AVENGERS: ENDGAME was not releasing.

The collections dropped all over and the places that did better over the five days were showing the same drop as places that did poor business. The film again shows how fast collections can come down for a big film when it is rejected though KALANK cant be classed as a real big film like the ones that came down fast last year.

The best business for the film will come in Mumbai and Mysore.

KALANK collected 62.50 crore nett over its first five days with the film not performing after the first day. The collections on Sunday were a bit surprising as the film actually went up but it hardly makes a difference. The film lost the battle on Friday when collections went flat.

It is inevitable the collections will have a big drop on Monday due to the weekend trend. The film did better in the metros like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore but was bad in mass centres and even a multiplex circuit like East Punjab was very poor. The growth on Sunday was generally mass areas but they were at low levels on Saturday.

Mumbai collected around 20 crore nett and Delhi/UP was around 13 crore nett. Mysore had healthy numbers with business of 4 crore nett apprx.

KALANK dropped on Saturday which was pretty much on the cards as it could not show much growth on the Friday which was a part holiday. The film collected 9.25 crore nett on Saturday to takes its four day haul to 51.50 crore nett. The five day weekend should be around 60-61 crore nett as the Sunday collections will probably not go up a lot.

Normally 60 crore nett in five days will give a film a shot at 100 crore nett but due to the trend of this film there is no chance of that here as the collections will fizzle out over the weekdays. There was some growth for the film in places like Gujarat and Bengal but that will hardly make any difference to the overall picture.

KALANK was pretty much flat on the third day which was a restricted holiday for Good Friday. The film hardly went up when it should have been going up around 30-40%. This collections were up in some places but some places were actually down where this holiday is not in play. The film collected 10.75-11 crore nett on the third day.

The business of the film is mainly in metros be it Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore with B and C centres just not taking to the film and the bigger areas could be holding better as Good Friday is more of a metro holiday rather than a mass one like Holi. The business in Mumbai is 12 crore nett while Delhi/UP is 8.75 crore nett and the best circuit is probably Mysore at 2.50 crore nett. East Punjab is poor with business of 3 crore nett which is hardly better than Mysore when it should be double considering normal circuit values.

KALANK dropped around 50% as it collected 10.75 crore nett and take its total to 31.75 crore nett. The drop is more than it should be as 30-40% range is probably normal. If day one was a national holiday then this sort of drop would have been pretty good but Mahavir Jayanti is more of a restricted holiday.

Still there have been films like AGNEEPATH (2012) and GOLD (2018) which have gone on to do good and decent business respectively after big drops on day two. Both were national holiday releases. GOLD is probably the better comparison for KALANK as its a similar film in a period zone and more importantly it was also a Wednesday release.

It is about the trajectory of the film from here on and it has help of another holiday on Friday. If the film can show good growth on Friday and then Sunday it will be a decent five day haul and maybe better than GOLD. The problem will be that Sunday is unlikely to go back to day one levels due to this drop and that is what you want if the weekdays are to really have a chance of strong holds.

KALANK had the highest opening day of 2019 with collections at around 21 crore nett. It was a record opening day for a Varun Dhawan or Alia Bhatt starrer despite it not being a film for the youth. So despite it not being an initial type of film due to limited action and music not really working, it has put up a good first thanks to the Mahavir Jayanti holiday compensating.

The film collected around 6 crore nett in Mumbai with both Maharashtra and Gujarat doing well. Delhi/UP will top 4 crore nett with strong collections in Delhi NCR and Muslim dominated centres in UP collecting well. The Central India markets were similar to TOTAL DHAMAAL and KESARI which is good for a Varun Dhawan starrer to be in same range as big mass stars like Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn in these circuits.

The film will have a drop on Thursday but it will be more about that Friday - Sunday business and whether the film can show that normal weekend upward trend. Its a five day weekend so the film should be coming back to the level of day one on Sunday or better which would be a good result over five days.
