I always thought my first film would also be my last-Riteish Deshmukh

While his comic timing in a string of Hindi films won him popularity, Riteish Deshmukh’s advent into Marathi films brought forth a side of him that the audience had never seen. Recently, the actor, who was seen as the host of the Marathi Bigg Boss, wrapped up the latest instalment of Housefull. In a conversation, Riteish talks about his journey in the Hindi and Marathi industries and how he defines success as an actor, director and producer:
‘The outcome of your efforts is not in your hands’
Riteish took over from Mahesh Manjrekar as the host of the recently concluded Bigg Boss Marathi Season 5. Ask him about the popularity of this season, and he replies, “I believe that instead of being weighed down by the success, one should be responsible towards the work that you’ve taken on and do it with utmost sincerity. I realized early in my life that the outcome of your efforts is not in your hands; it can succeed or fail. You have to give it your 100 per cent dedication regardless of the result.”
‘I’m just happy to dive into comedies’
The actor was also shooting for the fifth installment of Housefull alongside hosting the reality show. Talking about returning to a quintessential comic caper, he shares, “Although Kakuda was a horror comedy, it wasn’t the typical madcap one. So, I am just happy to get back to comedies, which are coming back-to-back with Housefull 5, Dhamaal 4 and Masti 4. In between, I will also be directing the Hindi and Marathi bilingual Raja Shivaji, a film based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.”
‘I didn’t deliberately choose to take on negative roles’
Reflecting on his early days, he recalls that his primary goal as a debutant in Tujhe Meri Kasam (2003) was simply to win the audience’s acceptance. He says, “When I debuted in 2003, all I wanted was for the audience to accept me. When comedies like Masti (2004) and Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005) worked, people started offering me only comedies.”
Ask him if he had to put in a lot of effort to break away from the genre, and he says, “No, I don’t think it was a deliberate attempt. It was just one of those opportunities that came my way. Ekta Kapoor and Mohit Suri were brave enough to offer me Ek Villain at that point, and I am very happy with the way it worked out.”
He adds, “I tried to do serious films like Naach (2004) and Rann (2010), but those didn’t work. I even did Aladdin, which didn’t click either. So, I was back to the comedy franchises. Breaking away from the comedy genre took time and films like Lai Bhaari (2014), Ek Villain (2014), Ved (2022), Visfot (2024) and Raid 2 (yet to release) helped me explore other aspects of my craft.”
‘Becoming an actor was never my plan’
Riteish has seen huge success in the Marathi film industry. Does he ever compare his journey in regional cinema with his work in Hindi films?
He says, “Becoming an actor was never my plan — I’m an accidental actor. In fact, I always thought my first film would also be my last. Everyone defines success differently. For me, success is something personal. When I reflect on my journey, as someone who grew up on movies, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunities I’ve had. I’ve worked with legends like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Mithun Chakraborty, Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and Salman Khan. These are the icons I admired onscreen. Sharing the screen with them is my definition of success. So, it doesn’t matter whether I’ve achieved great heights in Marathi cinema or performed reasonably well in Hindi. Those aren’t the metrics I measure myself against.”

Known for his intense roles, Rajeev says playing a cocky star in Showtime has made the industry notice his versatility

Playing a cocky Bollywood superstar can be fun. But when Rajeev Khandelwal was offered the role in Showtime, he approached it with equal parts curiosity and skepticism, as it was a departure from anything he had played before. As the second part of the drama premières online, the actor’s doubts have been laid to rest.
People see me as intense and romantic, but this was completely [divorced from] the characters I have played. So, this praise has been unexpected. When your peers find you convincing, it feels great. When my wife said, ‘I loved your cockiness,’ it felt as if the appreciation coming my way is justified,” he chuckles.
From Bollywood’s drama-ridden corridors in Showtime, Khandelwal is now gearing up for a treasure hunt of sorts with his next Disney+ Hotstar show. The yet-untitled series, helmed by Munjya maker Aditya Sarpotdar, is an adaptation of Marathi novel Pratipashchandra. For the actor, the highlight is working with Sarpotdar. “There are people who want to bring another side to you [on screen]. Aditya is one of them. In this series, he will perform more than us because it’s all about storytelling. I keep telling him, ‘You had Munjya and Kakuda. Now, make this as big as Munjya,’” he laughs.
In a career spanning over two decades, Khandelwal has followed his own rules, be it transitioning to films at the peak of his TV career or taking regular breaks. “There is no safe way to approach anything. If you have [talent] and experiment, you will fall and rise, but you have to believe in yourself. Don’t believe in what others say. It is good to know that I didn’t corrupt myself.”

New bride Sonakshi on her seven-year relationship with Zaheer, and how their joy strengthened them to ignore negative chatter around their shaadi

In the past 14 months, we’ve seen Sonakshi Sinha play five dramatically different women. While her maiden web series Dahaad (2023) saw her as a police officer from an oppressed caste, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar featured her as a ruthless courtesan and her revenge-seeking daughter. Over the weekend, we met two more versions of Sinha, as she played a double role again in Kakuda.
Is the variety of roles by design? Absolutely, the actor assures us. “It’s intentional. As an actor, I want to keep playing different roles. That’s what has kept me enthusiastic about my work after 14 years in the industry,” she says.
The change is all the more marked as Sinha, in the early years of her career, was often questioned about being part of hero-centric stories. But now, she stands proud as she fronts important stories.
“My hunger as a performer started increasing the day I switched gears. That hunger kept getting bigger and bigger; that’s why I [kept] choosing roles that were central to the plot and portrayed women in a strong light.”
Kakuda fits right in that plan. The ZEE5 horror comedy, also starring Riteish Deshmukh and Saqib Saleem, has been helmed by Munjya maker Aditya Sarpotdar. As much as Sinha loved the script, she had to take a beat before saying yes.
Reason? “I don’t even watch horror films because I am a scaredy cat,” she laughs. “But when I read this script, I could immediately see myself playing both Indira and Gomti. Aditya is a fantastic director. I loved his Zombivli [2022].”
If her professional life is flourishing, things are even more blissful on the personal front. Last month, she got married to long-time partner Zaheer Iqbal. The two had kept their relationship under wraps for seven years. Was it difficult to keep it away from the media glare? “It wasn’t. I am a low-key, private person. So, it happened organically. Also, I believe in keeping things that are close to my heart, close to my heart.”
In the days leading up to their wedding, the couple maintained their private demeanour, as rumours abounded about the Sinha family’s apparent displeasure over her shaadi.
“It was a happy time for me and for us. So, we were concentrating on that. When you are happy within yourself and with each other, and you are each other’s biggest strength, it gets very easy to drown out the noise. So, that’s what we did. We were focusing on us and our loved ones enjoying the big day.”

Kakuda, which has released today on Zee5, is yet another rustic horror comedy from director Aditya Sarpotdar of Munjya fame. The film is less than 2 hours long and tells a very intriguing story. The first half has ample funny and scary scenes and the developments keep the interest going. The second half is also engaging, especially once the back story emerges. Sadly, the film also gets bewildering at this point. The ending is unimaginative. Riteish Deshmukh has a late entry but makes up for it with his entertaining act. Sonakshi Sinha is superb. Saqib Saleem, too, gives his best but gets overpowered. Asif Khan (of 'Gazab beizzati hai' fame) raises laughs. Rajendra Gupta (Indu's father), Neelu Kohli (Indu's mother), Yogendra Tiku (Sunny's father Kishanchand), Alok Gutch (bespectacled old villager) and late Sameer Khakhar (Kalamandi Goyal) are decent. All in all, Kakuda is a nice timepass horror comedy.

Saqib, who has teamed up with friend Sonakshi for Kakuda, says they pushed each other creatively and their understanding made scenes more authentic

Saqib Saleem had several reasons to say yes to Kakuda. The actor was intrigued by the script of the horror comedy that is set in a small town cursed by a spirit. It also gave him the chance to team up with director Aditya Sarpotdar, who is riding high on Munjya’s success. But above all, his excitement to attempt a horror comedy influenced his decision.
“I love the genre. Be it Stree [2018], Bhediya [2022] or even Munjya, balancing chills with humour is a combination I enjoy,” he says.
Another draw was the cast. While Riteish Deshmukh plays a ghost-hunter, Sonakshi Sinha plays Saleem’s fiancée. Considering the two have been friends for long, he says their camaraderie made the experience even more enjoyable.
“Technically, this is the first time we are sharing screen space, but we had done a song together for Race 3 [2018] that never made it to the final cut. Sonakshi and I have been friends for a while. We have a great understanding, and that makes our scenes together authentic. She is a no-frills actor. She comes on set, performs the minute you say action, and when pack-up is called, she sits in her car and goes back home. She is the most professional actor I have come across. I have tremendous respect for her, even more now that I have worked with her.”
Their friendship not only brought a sense of comfort, but also enabled them to push each other creatively. “On a set, you should be around people who don’t make work feel like work. That’s what this film felt like.”

Exploring his first horror comedy with Kakuda, Riteish says director Sarpotdar has given modern twist to his character unlike traditional on-screen ghostbusters

Comedies are synonymous with Riteish Deshmukh’s career, but he has added a dimension to the genre with Kakuda, a horror comedy. In Aditya Sarpotdar’s directorial venture, the actor plays a ghost-hunter.
“As someone who has primarily worked in comedy, being part of the horror comedy genre was a refreshing change. The challenge was to strike the right balance between the two emotions, ensuring that the jump scares were effective while the comedic moments landed perfectly,” says Deshmukh, who is joined by Sonakshi Sinha and Saqib Saleem in the movie.
What was even more exciting for the actor was that his character wasn’t the run-of-the-mill, verse-chanting and ritual-following ghost-hunter. Instead, Sarpotdar and the writers have given a modern twist to the role.
“This is a quirky ghost-hunter. There is a unique blend of humour and modernity in his approach to ghost-hunting. Unlike the traditional ones we often see, my character brings a contemporary twist to the role, using modern gadgets and a witty personality to tackle the supernatural.”
The ZEE5 offering follows Sarpotdar’s Munjya, which has become a sleeper hit. Arriving right after a success can be pressuring, but Deshmukh has an optimistic take.
“Aditya is a fantastic director, and Munjya’s success is a testament to his storytelling prowess. We are aware of the high expectations. There is always a bit of pressure when you’re working on a project that follows a hit, but it’s the good kind of pressure that keeps you motivated. The key is to use it to fuel our creativity.”

Days after Munjya is released in theatres, director Aditya Sarpotdar trains his focus on his next release, horror comedy Kakuda. He is collaborating with Riteish Deshmukh after Mauli (2018) and Sonakshi Sinha for the film based on an Indian folklore. Produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the movie is written by Chirag Garg and Avinash Dwivedi.
This will be Sarpotdar’s third film in the horror comedy genre after Marathi film Zombivili (2022) and Munjya. “The storyline of the film and character details are currently under wraps,” says Sarpotdar, heightening the anticipation among fans. The film set to release on an OTT platform is yet to find a streaming partner.
“We are looking to release the film in the next two or three months. Until now, we have not decided the platform on which the film will be released,” he added.
Although he is spreading his wings in Bollywood, Sarpotdar is not giving up on Marathi films. He is simultaneously working on Faster Fene, co-produced by Deshmukh, which is a sequel to the 2017 detective crime thriller with the same name.

The year 2023 has begun on a ‘roaring’ note for Sonakshi Sinha, for the actor will make her web foray this year with the OTT series Dahaad.
The actor made her big screen debut with Dabangg in 2010, and 13 years later, she is trying her hand at a new medium. Is she nervous? Pat comes the response: “I just want to do good work, no matter where it is.”
“I took up Dahaad before Covid happened. During the pandemic, there was a huge OTT boom. Everybody was consuming content at home. Look at what it has done for so many people’s careers. There is so much good work for everyone — actors, directors and producers. A lot of wonderful projects are happening. OTT is going to open a lot of new doors for me,” adds the actor, who was last seen in Double XL.
Was doing Dahaad a no-brainer, then? “When Zoya (Akhtar) and Reema (Kagti, makers of the show) narrated the script, I didn’t think it was going to be on OTT at all. It was just a role in a project. I was very prompt in saying yes,” says the 35-year-old.
As for the present year, Sinha has her hands full. “I have a couple of projects up for release — Kakuda, Nikita And The Book Of Darkness, which is directed by my brother. I am currently shooting for Heeramandi,” she shares.

Sonakshi says she’d rather have people talk about her work than her personal life

Sonakshi Sinha is happy with where her career is at the moment, working on a variety of projects, and she prefers that people pay attention to her professional life rather than her personal one. Mention the queries and curiosity about when she will get married or who she will wed on pretty much all platforms, and she chuckles, saying that even her parents are not very interested in her plans to wed.
She tells us, “My parents (actor-politicians Shatrughan and Poonam Sinha) don’t ask me so much about my marriage as the media and the public. They are not bothered as much as them.” She says she is aware of the constant glare on her personal life and the speculations around it: “Of course, people are curious. They want to know what’s going on in my life. Well, they can speculate all they want, but I have always maintained that if I’m being spoken about, I’d rather be spoken about for my work.”
The actor, who entered Bollywood in 2010 with Dabangg, says, “Until I’m ready to share my life with the world, I won’t do it. I have always been that sort of a person. And that reflects on my social media as well. It’s reflected in the places I go to or where I’m seen and where I’m not seen. It is very easy for me to balance that out. I will only share with the world what I want to share and nothing else. It is important as a person to protect certain parts of yourself. Because I don’t want to be available to everyone all the time.”
The 35-year-old is excited for people to watch the projects she’s been working on, from the horror-comedy Kakuda to her web debut Dahaad, which is a thriller. “You (the audience) won’t be disappointed. I think you’ll be very happy to see me playing such characters,” says the actor, who was last seen in Bhuj: The Pride of India (2021).
She goes on to add that getting to essay diverse roles keeps her excited about her profession: “I’m a Gemini, so I get bored very easily. I have to keep doing something to really make me stay interested in whatever is happening. So this is how I keep myself submerged in my work.”

Sonakshi Sinha seems to have found her space and rhythm in Bollywood. From playing the demure and proper heroine, she’s now found her comfort in going after characters that are edgy and connect with her at a deeper, emotional level. Whether it’s the role of a cop in Reema Kagti’s show, her character in Double XL or the character she’s reportedly playing in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series. Although she can barely sit through a horror film as an audience, she has played a pivotal part in the horror-comedy Kakuda.
Sonakshi says, “I don’t want to do anything that’s repetitive, ever. With every project, I’m attempting a new genre. Like the horror-comedy space. I don’t watch horror films. In that sense, acting in one was tough. I have to admit that I enjoyed being a part of that crew. More than anything else today, the work I do has to challenge me. Even now I can’t watch horror films, but I will make an exception and watch Kakuda because we did such interesting things. Like, I have realised that a lot of things depend on VFX in such films. On so many occasions, I found myself emoting or reacting to things that weren’t even there. I had to imagine them happening or being there. That’s the real challenge in this space.”
In her years as an actor, Sonakshi has hardly ever played a badass character. Ittefaq was the closest, she says, that she ever got to playing a negative part. “I badly want to play a negative character. I want to play a badass girl on screen. I really want to sink my teeth into something of that sort. I have never really played an outright badass. And that’s also because no one quite writes that kind of stuff for women. But I want to venture into that space. Now, that’s a challenge and that’s a space that I want to explore in the coming time,” she shares.
After over a decade in business, Sonakshi admits that she feels enthused by the changes at every level. “When you see the tide shifting in the business, it feels great to be able to rise to the challenges that come along,” she says, adding, “With avenues opening up, industries becoming a more cohesive space and so many sub-genres of content opening up, we have so much to choose from. I have worked in the South industry before, but I haven’t done a project there in a long time due to my commitments here. But now, I would like to look at something there. I just find so much variety in our content today, both as a consumer and as a performer. It is mind-boggling.”

Sonakshi Sinha doesn’t want to take on repetitive, insignificant roles anymore; says she’s equipped enough to headline films now

Actor Sonakshi Sinha likes how things have been in her career so far. But going forward, she’d like something to change — she doesn’t want to settle for small parts: “I don’t want to be repetitive or do characters that aren’t strong.” So, is she referring to the damsel in distress kind of roles? “Not really. If I have to play that at some point, it’s my job to portray a character. But, if I get to play a serial killer, I won’t say I can’t do it. As an actor, you have to play different roles,” she says.
The 34-year-old, who will be seen in films such as Double XL and Kakuda, says she doesn’t find the ‘commercial heroine’ image a hindrance in being considered for more meaningful roles.
“I have never strategised anything, or thought that at this point, I will only do such films. I did a film like Lootera (2013) at the beginning of my career, right in the middle of those commercial films. From the beginning, people never questioned my abilities as an actor, so it wasn’t difficult for them to imagine me in certain kinds of roles,” says Sinha.
She feels that the way he audience accepted her in films such as Dabangg (2010) and Rowdy Rathore (2012) made the makers believe that she could headline films, too: “Since I did films like that, I got to do movies such as Double XL. I got the power and courage to headline films.”

The new year began with a rapid rise in Coronavirus cases, affecting our lives yet again, and showbiz is not untouched either. Film releases have been postponed, shoots have been affected. Actor Sonakshi Sinha, who has a busy year ahead in terms of projects, worries about the debilitating impact a third lockdown would have on the film industry.
“Not only the film industry, everyone has been badly hit [by the pandemic] in terms of jobs. The country as a whole cannot afford another lockdown. It is on us to be careful and responsible as citizens, to stop the spread [of the virus] as much as we can. I believe that people are taking this seriously, as they should, for the sake of everyone. Hopefully, we won’t have to move into a lockdown again,” says the 34-year-old.
On the professional front, things are looking bright for Sinha this year. Apart from making her web debut with filmmaker Reema Kagti’s Fallen, she will star in Double XL with Huma S Qureshi, and also has the horror comedy Kakuda in the pipeline.
Sinha, who is now working on losing the weight she had put on for Double XL, tells us, “Last year was so good for me, professionally. I finished three projects. Now I am getting in shape for my next project. Hopefully, I will start working on it by February.”
Having started her career with a commercial film like Dabangg (2010), the actor has come a long way, taking up projects which offered her more meat. She says this felt like the right time for her to experiment.
“This very exciting phase has come at such a perfect time, just when I was warming up and experimenting with roles. After 10 years of working, you want to do something different,” Sinha shares.
However, the one project which isn’t happening now is Bulbul Tarang. The film has been shelved due to the delays caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
Sinha clarifies, “The film had been pushed a lot...There were many actors involved, so it was difficult for everyone’s dates to come together again.”

As she bids adieu to 2021, Sonakshi Sinha looks back at the year, which she says was full of unexpected situations. However, she has realised that personally, it wasn’t that bad a year for her. The actress, who believes in only seeing the positives in any situation, was glad to spend family time where she discovered a lot more about her family members. She is also happy that we regained a sense of normalcy and she shot for multiple projects that marked many firsts of her career. Read on:
It’s time we bid adieu to 2021. How has the year been for you? Was it better than you expected, or are you just heaving a sigh of relief that it is finally over?
When 2021 started, I thought it would only get better because how much worse could it get? Through the year, everybody’s life changed. People were thrown into unexpected situations, and they adapted to different things and moved on. There was no choice. Personally, I like to look at the positive side, like the family time I got to enjoy. I would barely get any time to spend with my parents. There was so much togetherness, and we got to know so many new things about each other. My mom was the happiest to have all three kids and her husband under one roof. My parents discovered that I enjoy spending time at home more than going out. I found out that my dad likes to travel so much that the lockdown was quite tough for him. That apart, I feel happy about the fact that this year we all got back to work.
With the arrival of vaccines, as things moved towards normalcy, I shot for three projects. I completed my first web show, which was pending since 2020. We shot it in early 2021 in a bio-bubble. It was something new that I got to experience. Then, as life started coming back to normalcy, I shot for my first horror-comedy, Kakuda. Then I flew to London for my film Double XL. So yes, it was quite a busy year.
From playing a cop in a web show to being a part of a horror-comedy — work-wise, 2021 indeed marked many firsts.
Yes, it has been a year of many firsts for me. My first horror-comedy is Kakuda. It is a genre that was most unlikely for me because I am petrified of horror tales. The comedy part of it made it easy for me to do the project. I have done various kinds of films, so whenever something new comes along I feel the need to grab it. What interested me about my first web show is that for the first time I was getting to play a cop. I have been a part of so many films where all my heroes have been cops, so this time I said, ‘Why should boys have all the fun?’ I jumped on the bandwagon to play a badass cop. I also shot for the film Double XL, and it is quite a special project. It deals with body image, weight issues and the challenges people face; hence it’s an important subject to be highlighted. I was easily convinced to play the part as it is something I have personally been through.
Your recent social media post, where you asked your friends who were getting married to keep calm, went viral. Does such good news coming from your friends and colleagues make you want to walk down that path, too?
(Laughs!) You saw how everybody was getting married one after the other this year. I mean thoda break lelo yaar! The post was just for laughs, I wish them a happy life. As far as I am concerned, I am somebody who wanted to get married ever since I was 16. My ambition in life was to grow up and get married. So, I will always feel that pinch till the day I get married. On a serious note, there is time for everything, and one cannot rush into something so big. I think it will happen when the time is right and when you find the right person. I have realised that the more you chase it, the more it runs away from you. You have to let it come to you. I am very happy in my workspace. I have learnt to chill, and I am going to relax and let it come to me.
There are rumours that you and Notebook actor Zaheer Iqbal are seeing each other...
Zaheer is like my best friend. We laugh off this news because it is very funny. We have worked in Double XL together. I really appreciate him as an actor. I think he was very good in his first film, Notebook. His role in Double XL is drastically different from what he did in his debut film. I think he is very talented and definitely someone to watch out for.

I cannot speak anything about this project right now. Let the producers do the talking. As far as the filmmaker is concerned, I love the kind of cinema he makes. His films are opulent, grand, visually captivating and boast of phenomenal music. Over the years, he has established his style of cinema. Out of all his work, my favourite has been Khamoshi: The Musical.
This year you completed 11 years in the industry. Are you happy with the way your career has shaped up so far?
I think it has been great, and I feel like it is going pretty well for me based on the fact that I have always been very instinctive about the films that I choose. I think people measure success in different ways. I have been a part of films that did extremely well or might not have done well. But honestly, I don’t measure my success based on that. I need to enjoy the work that I am doing and also learn something from it. In the future, I want to do roles that challenge me or push me to my limits and show me in a different light as an actor. I want to surprise people as well as entertain them. So, yes, I think I am just going to follow what I have been doing so far.
