Such people should not get a chance to make a film or act in one-Jude Anthany Joseph

‘SUCH PEOPLE
SHOULD NOT BE
ALLOWED TO MAKE
ANOTHER FILM’

In wake of the shocking claims of the Justice Hema Committee report, actor Lakshmi Manchu and filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph talk about sexual misconduct against women working in the industry that they have witnessed first-hand

The publicly available version of the Justice Hema Committee report does not reveal names of the alleged perpetrators of sexual harassment and violence it recorded. But filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph believes the names should be made public. Joseph, who directed the Malayalam film 2018 (2023), which was India’s official entry for Best International Feature Film in the 96th Academy Awards this year, adds, “The complaints should be seriously looked into by the government and there should be action against whoever has been named.”

The 41-year-old worries that the entire Malayalam industry might get painted as such. “Such a perception affects people like me too,” says Joseph, adding that three of the four films he has made — Sara’s (2021) Oru Muthassi Gadha (2016) and Ohm Shanthi Oshaana (2014) — have been about the right of women to make their own choices.

‘Threw out a male assistant director once’
The Justice Hema Committee was formed in 2017 following the alleged abduction and sexual assault of a female actor working in the Malayalam film industry. The committee made its report public on August 19, seven years after the incident. The 233-page report says that “a culture of sexual harassment pervades the Malayalam film industry”.

Talking about how he deals with complaints of harassment on sets, Joseph shares, “Once an actor complained about an assistant director on my set. She said he had started messaging her saying he had developed a soft corner for her. I threw the AD out the same day and he was never part of my set again.”

In order to ensure that women on film sets are able to work freely, he suggests, “There should be a member of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) or a similar committee on every set, ensuring women working on that film feel safe.”

Asked how male filmmakers and actors can be better allies of their female counterparts, Joseph says, “It is not very difficult. I can say that I listen to every complaint on my set, irrespective of it coming from a man or woman,” adding, “There should be a way to punish such people, and the punishment should be legal and professional — such people should not get a chance to make a film or act in one.”

2018 fails to make it to final 15 in race for Oscars

Oscars 2024: Malayalam Film 2018 Is India's Official Entry

THE TIMES OF INDIA (December 23, 2023)

Kochi: The Malayalam survival drama movie ‘2018: Everyone Is A Hero’ directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, is out of the Oscars race. The movie, which was selected as India’s official entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the 96th academy awards 2024, has failed to secure a spot on the shortlist of 15 films. The shortlist was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on Friday.

The movie, starring Tovino Thomas, Kunhacko Boban, Indrans, Asif Ali, Tanvi Ram, Aparna Balamurali, etc. and set against the backdrop of devastating 2018 flood in Kerala was selected as official entry for Oscar, as it deals with a global issue with harrowing details of a natural calamity.

After the movie failed to find a spot in the shortlist, director Jude Anthany Joseph posted a note in his social media accounts thanking those who extended support to the movie. “I sincerely apologize to all my well-wishers and supporters for disappointing you all. Nevertheless, the opportunity to represent India in this competition has been a dream-like journey that I will cherish for a lifetime. Being the highest-grossing film and the official Indian entry to the Oscars is a rare achievement in any filmmaker’s career. ... My heartfelt thanks go to the producers, technicians, artists, and the audience for their tremendous support for our film”, he wrote on Facebook.

Jonathan Glazer’s historical drama ‘The Zone Of Interest’ (UK), Denmark’s ‘The Promised Land,’ starring Mads Mikkelsen, and ‘Perfect Days’ from Japan are being billed as the frontrunners of the category. The shortlist also includes ‘Amerikatsi’ (Armenia), ‘The Monk And The Gun’ (Bhutan), ‘Fallen Leaves’ (Finland), ‘The Taste Of Things’ (France), ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’ (Germany), ‘Godland’ (Iceland), ‘Io Capitano’ (Italy), ‘Totem’ (Mexico), ‘The Mother Of All Lies’ (Morocco), ‘Society Of The Snow’ (Spain), ‘Four Daughters’ (Tunisia) ‘20 Days In Mariupol’ (Ukraine). Films from 88 countries were eligible in the category. The shortlisted movies will advance to the next round of voting.

Despite the setback, Joseph expressed gratitude to the producers, technicians, artists, and the audience for their support.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced shortlists in 10 categories, including best original song, documentary feature, international feature, original score, and crafts like hair and makeup, visual effects and sound. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" and Martin Scorsese's "Killers Of The Flower Moon" were prominently represented among the finalists. Mstyslav Chernov's "20 Days In Mariupol" was shortlisted in both the documentary and international feature categories, representing Ukraine. The films are one step closer to an Oscar nomination.

We are determined to give 2018 a fighting chance at the Oscars-Venu Kunnappilly

Never imagined 2018 would go for Oscars: Jude

Producer Venu Kunnappilly is super excited about his Malayalam film 2018 being declared India’s official entry for the Oscars. “It feels like a huge achievement. As it is, the film has been a record breaker at the box office, but we did not even imagine an honour such as this selection while making the movie. It has come as an amazing surprise, especially because it has been picked from among hundreds of films from different regional industires, and several that were made on much bigger budgets,” the Dubai-based producer told us over the phone.

The announcement that the Jude Anthany Joseph directorial had been selected was made yesterday by veteran filmmaker and chairman of the selection committee Girish Kasaravalli, who noted that the film was picked for its theme of climate change and how it is affecting people. The film, which features Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban and Asif Ali, is loosely based on incidents from the devastating Kerala floods of 2018.

Venu says that the team has high hopes of making a mark at the Academy Awards. “Now, it will be quite a journey in taking a shot at the Oscars. The film has to run at the theatres there to ensure that the Academy committee members watch the movie. We must explain the movie's milieu to them, have it featured in the magazines there and so on. It will be expensive, but we are determined to give 2018 a fighting chance. This is a rare opportunity for Malayalam cinema,” he says.

Jude had said that the idea of making the film, a survival thriller and emotional drama with the tagline ‘Everyone Is a Hero’, had given him sleepless nights. Venu, who bankrolled the film along with CK Padma Kumar and Anto Joseph, agrees that it was a daunting task. “Not everyone would be willing to make a film on this scale,” he says.

“But I liked the idea of taking the risk and Jude’s confidence spurred me on. Anyway, the outcome is beyond our dreams.”

Director Jude Anthany Joseph was stunned when he learnt that his film 2018 had been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars 2024. In an exclusive conversation with us, he reveals that this unexpected honour wasn’t something the team had ever anticipated. “I came to know just last week that the film had been sent for consideration. I was not bothered about it (Oscar application) because that’s not something I ever imagined in my dreams. I knew it wouldn’t happen. When the news came out, someone called me for a byte, and when I asked why, they told me. I was really shocked.”

While the 40-year-old director had confidence in the film’s quality and expected positive reviews, he never foresaw 2018 becoming the highest-grossing film in Malayalam cinema. The survival drama centered around the devastating 2018 floods in Kerala.

Joseph recalls, “A night before the film’s release, I sent a video message to my producers, saying that tomorrow onwards, you will start getting many messages and phone calls; this film will be a milestone in Malayalam cinema. I was sure it would be a superhit, but not the highest grosser. I knew the kind of appreciation we received from people in theatres across India would transcend language barriers. But again, the Oscars were not in our plan.”
