Is it fair to sacrifice talented artistes at the altar of shoddy scripts?

Talented actors are trolled and criticized for taking certain roles, but is it right to question only the performances?

Sometimes, poor scripts are elevated by great performances. But, what do you expect when best of actors are given sketchy characters in a badly written story? Case in point: Gajraj Rao in Bholaa, Sanjay Mishra in Jogira Sara Ra Ra and more. Such actors, known for their versatility, were reduced to frivolous characters in certain projects, which left their fans, and audience at large, disappointed. The bigger question is: Is it fair to sacrifice talented artistes at the altar of shoddy scripts? Industry experts help us decode.
Actors state their reasons
‘FOCUS ON WHAT’S GOOD FOR ME’
Gajraj Rao says he’s “very selective” with picking films, thus he doesn’t regret taking up any role. “If I start getting bothered by what people like to see, I won’t be able to survive in this industry. I feel, you’re the best judge of your work, so I only focus on what I think is good for me,” he says.
‘CAN ONLY DO WHAT’S OFFERED’
Renuka Shahane was highly criticized for Govinda Naam Mera (2022), but she doesn’t take “vague opinions” seriously. “If you tell me that this role wasn’t good enough for me, it does not make sense to me. How is it going to change anything for me? I can only do what’s being offered.”
‘HAVE TO PUT BREAD ON THE TABLE’
Ronit Roy, who played Kartik Aaryan’s father in Shehzada, opines that decisions are often determined by several factors. “I have to create a balance between the films I like and projects that will facilitate putting bread on the table. I never feel short-changed because I sign the film knowing what my role is,” he says.
‘MAIN KYUN NA KARUN?’
Siddharth Jadhav was brutally trolled for his cringe acting in Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus (2022). He admits that sometimes actors sign up a film only to collaborate with a director and banner. “Kabhi kabhi achche logon ke saath kaam karna bhi impactful hota hai. That’s why I took up Cirkus and Radhe (2021), which had Salman Khan in the lead and was directed by Prabhudheva,” he says.

‘NOT THE ACTOR’S FAULT’
Taran Adarsh feels that actors’ judgement can in no way be blamed for a script misfire. “Actors very well know what they are signing up for. Nobody is cheating or lying to them or making false promises. This used to happen earlier when there was no hard bound script, but that’s not the case anymore,” he says.
LOST IN TRANSITION
Atul Mohan explains how at times, the character’s strength gets lost in script-to-screen transition. ”Paper par jo hota hai, wo bahut exciting hota hai. I’ve been part of so many narrations where the director described a character in such a way that any actor would get convinced. But it did not translate well in the final outcome.”

Jogira Sara Ra Ra starts on a great note and it’ll leave you surprised. It is in the zone of feel good films like Bareilly Ki Barfi, Tanu Weds Manu etc. The dialogues by Ghalib Asad Bhopali are very funny and enhance the humour quotient. Few scenes are well shot and thought of. Sadly, the film goes haywire in the second half. The makers come up with some plot points but for some reason, they leave it mid-way and move on to the next track. The finale is abrupt and leaves a lot to be desired. Speaking of performances, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is in top form and it’s great to see him in such light-hearted role for a change. His comic timing is spot-on. Neha Sharma looks quite good and performs ably. Sadly, she doesn’t have much to do in the second half. Mahaakshay Chakraborty (Lallu) is the surprise package of the film. Sanjay Mishra is dependable. Zarina Wahab is okay while Suman Patel (Sarita) and Rohit Chaudhary (Manu) leave a mark. The late Farrukh Jaffar is cute. All in all, Jogira Sara Ra Ra is an average fare. Go for it with very low expectations and you might actually enjoy it.

12 RELEASES THIS FRIDAY; NAWAZUDDIN SIDDIQUI STARRER AND DISNEY LIVE-ACTION FILM MAY FIND A FEW TAKERS
Tomorrow will see the release of as many as 12 Hindi and English films! Sadly, most of them have no famous names attached and are releasing with zero buzz. The two films that might find an audience are Jogira Sara Ra Ra and The Little Mermaid.
Jogira Sara Ra Ra stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Neha Sharma. It is directed by Kushan Nandy of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz fame. The film looks like a fun, light-hearted fare. However, the buzz and awareness are limited. Nawazuddin was recently in the news for claiming that depression is an urban phenomenon. He uttered this statement while promoting Jogira Sara Ra Ra. Though his quote went viral, it didn’t help the film. Jogira Sara Ra Ra should open in the range of Rs. 50 lakhs.
The Little Mermaid is a Disney live-action film and a remake of the classic 1989 film. These films often find an audience, especially in urban multiplexes. However, the international reviews of the film are mixed and this can prove detrimental. A similar film in this zone was Beauty And The Beast in 2017. It opened at Rs. 1.40 crore. The Little Mermaid should aim at a similar kind of opening. Beauty And The Beast ended up collecting Rs. 20 crores in its lifetime as its word of mouth was very positive. If the public reports are positive, The Little Mermaid can also aim for it though realistically, it looks like it’ll end up at around Rs. 15 crores at the maximum.
A film which will not collect but will get glowing reviews is 2018. It is a rare Malayalam film to be dubbed in Hindi. It has got very limited shows though. The other Hindi releases like Aazam, Auhaam, Chal Zindagi, Lavaste, NRI Wives, Pyara Kulhad and The Creator – Sarjanhar will sink without a trace.
Lastly, About My Father will find some takers as it stars Robert De Niro. Beau Is Afraid releases without any hype and has a run time of 179 minutes. Hence, it'll struggle to find audiences.

Mithun’s son Mimoh, who has two releases in Rosh and Jogira Sara Ra Ra, says being a star kid hasn’t helped him or put him at a disadvantage

There has been much discussion about how star kids have it easy in Bollywood, while outsiders struggle for years for that elusive break in the movies. But Mithun Chakraborty’s son Mimoh doesn’t subscribe to the notion. After foraying into Bollywood with Jimmy in 2008, the actor featured in several forgettable films. Having seen his share of struggle, Chakraborty says that the term ‘star kid’ and its implications are “misleading”.
“It’s not the right way to address anybody who comes from a lineage of films because the only thing we get from [our parents] is their love and passion for films and acting. The tag is negative, and [garners] hateful remarks. There is no difference [in artistes]. I am like every other struggler, trying to create my own niche,” says the actor, who recently had a release in Rosh. Up next, he will be seen in Jogira Sara Ra Ra that is led by Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
One cannot deny that star kids find it easier to set foot in the industry, a luxury that is not afforded to outsiders. But Chakraborty believes everyone has a different journey.
“Everyone deserves a chance. Being from the film industry has put me neither at an [advantage] nor at a disadvantage. I only want to focus on [self-improvement] and the opportunities coming my way.”

Jogira Sara Ra Ra director Nandy on how Siddiqui, having two left feet, pulled off three dance numbers

Dance is probably the last thing you associate with Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He does, too. But the actor put on his dancing shoes for Jogira Sara Ra Ra with Neha Sharma. Was it difficult to get Siddiqui to shake a leg? Not really, says director Kushan Nandy.
“I didn’t have to convince Nawaz to dance at all. I have known him for over a decade, and share a relationship of trust. The moment he trusts you with the script, he will put his life and soul into it,” shares the director.
The romantic comedy has three songs, including the peppy number, Cocktail, which has been choreographed by Vijay Ganguly. Nandy says the idea was to design steps that played to the leading man’s strengths, followed by adequate rehearsals.
“He is not your conventional dancer, nor is he [a fantastic dancer] like Shahid Kapoor or Hrithik Roshan. We had to figure out how we could mould him into doing what we wanted him to do, while keeping his sensibilities in place. His dance in the film is performance-oriented. While he is shaking a leg, there is a lot of focus on his expressions as well.”
In Jogira Sara Ra Ra, Siddiqui plays an event planner who helps a bride-to-be out of a sticky situation. The actor recently shot for an upcoming episode of The Kapil Sharma Show, where he spoke about his brush with dancing.
“I don’t consider my dance that great. The steps given to me weren’t tough. I rehearsed them and was able to get them right,” he said.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui claims he has no idea why rumours about his movies failing to attract buyers on web are circulating

Nawazuddin Siddiqui was one of the first Indian actors to jump on the streaming business when it started to dominate in India. His role as Ganesh Gaitonde in Sacred Games, which received international acclaim, prompted everyone to sit up and take notice that this medium is here to stay. But then, after some time, came his statement that he wouldn’t work on OTT platforms any more. He felt that the web had become a “dumping ground for redundant shows”.
However, it has recently come to light that as many as eight of the actor’s films are not finding buyers on streamers, and the makers do not want to go the theatrical route. When asked about it, the 48-year-old tells us, “Pata nahin kahaan se yeh issue aaya! Meri kaun si picture ko OTT mana kar raha hai? Mujhe toh pata nahi yeh news kahaan se aayi. Meri films ready nahi hui hain: Haddi is still being shot; I have finished shooting for Afwaah; now it is in the post-production stage, and the work on it will take at least a year or six to seven months. Besides that, dubbing work for all my films is pending, which also includes Jogira Sara Ra Ra. Tiku Weds Sheru will come to a leading OTT platform; I don’t know when, though.”
But where are these rumours coming from, we wonder? Does he have any rivals who might be involved? “Main aisa aadmi hoon jo apna ghar bech ke bhi film banna lunga. They won’t get anything by pulling me down. I am a stubborn person. I will make my own films,” ends the actor.

Despite offers from two leading OTT platforms, Jogira Sara Ra Ra director Nandy says team has unanimously decided on big-screen release of Nawazuddin-starrer

Slowly but surely, actors are returning to the big screen. After Akshay Kumar’s Bellbottom managed a respectable figure at the box-office, it has boosted the confidence of filmmakers to take the leap of faith. Among them is Kushan Nandy, whose Jogira Sara Ra Ra is nearing completion.
The director says the Nawazuddin Siddiqui-led film is set to be theatre-bound despite some OTT platforms vying for its premiere rights. Sources say that Netflix India and Amazon Prime Video had initiated talks with the makers over a month ago.
“We have got quite a few lucrative offers from digital platforms, but we are looking only at theatres. Jogira Sara Ra Ra is a fun, four-ticket film that families [will enjoy] on the big screen. Nawaz, producer Naeem Siddiqui, creative producer Kiran Shroff and I discussed it at length, and unanimously agreed on it. We are confident about the film doing well in cinemas — that’s the first and foremost reason we don’t want to take the OTT route,” says the director, who has reunited with Siddiqui after Babumoshai Bandookbaaz (2017).
He acknowledges that Bellbottom’s performance has strengthened their resolve further. “Kudos to Akshay Kumar, Vashu Bhagnani [producer] and their team for taking this step! It’s a courageous call and shows us the way forward.”
Luckily, the makers of Jogira Sara Ra Ra — also featuring Neha Sharma — have the advantage of time. While the director completed the talkie portions in April, two songs have yet to be shot. Nandy hopes that by the time he calls it a wrap on the slice-of-life movie, the situation will have further improved.
“We will shoot Nawaz’s song by the end of September, and the other, with Neha, in early October at a Mumbai set. The post-production and background mixing are underway,” says the filmmaker, hoping to reach the finish line soon. The makers will zero in on a release date after the songs are shot.

Jogira Sara Ra Ra director Kushan Nandy discusses reuniting with Siddiqui after Babumoshai Bandookbaaz

Kushan Nandy’s Jogira Sara Ra Ra, a slice-of-life film about an oddball couple, is a departure from his last outing, Babumoshai Bandookbaaz (2017). The director, weary from the action thriller’s dark theme, says he was more than happy to switch to a lighter subject. “I had exhausted myself with the serious and dark [story]. I wanted to experiment with a fun subject,” he states.
The two movies may be poles apart, but the filmmaker found himself envisioning Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the leading man again. Nandy, who wrapped up Jogira Sara Ra Ra’s shoot in Uttar Pradesh last month, acknowledges that their second collaboration has brought them closer. “Nawaz has become a habit for me. We have an unspoken tuning and understand each other completely. It helps if the director and actor are in sync. I can assure you that the audience hasn’t seen Nawaz in such an avatar before; it’s a quirky role.”

Director Kushan Nandy on why he chose to kick off Kun Faya Kun instead of resuming work on Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Jogira Sara Ra Ra

Yesterday, director Kushan Nandy kicked off the shoot of Kun Faya Kun — featuring Harshvardhan Rane and Sanjeeda Shaikh — in Mahabaleshwar. The move left many wondering about the fate of his Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Jogira Sara Ra Ra. After all, the actor-director duo had shot the rom-com for three days in Lucknow in March before the pandemic threw a wrench in their plans.
Ask him if he has put the Siddiqui-starrer on the backburner, and Nandy clarifies, "Kun Faya Kun is being filmed in a start-to-finish 35-day schedule. So, I will be done with the movie by the second week of December. It doesn't have too many songs. So, we decided to shoot this before as it's a quickie. Then, I can head to the pre-production of Jogira. That way, I will have two releases next year."
Come 2021, Nandy will revisit the universe of Jogira Sara Ra Ra with Siddiqui. The duo had previously collaborated on Babumoshai Bandookbaaz. "Nawaz is like an elder brother to me; he knows we are starting Kun Faya Kun. After coordinating the dates of the entire cast of Jogira, we have finally decided to roll from February 1," adds the director.
