Tina Dattaa appalled after being sexually harassed on Jet Airways flight

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; December 10, 2016)

Telly actress Tina Dattaa, best remembered as Ichcha from daily show Uttaran, went through a harrowing time while travelling from Mumbai to Rajkot last morning. Tina alleges a co-passenger seated behind her touched her inappropriately and the airline crew informed her such incidents were routine.

Says Tina, “As soon as I sat down, I felt someone trying to sneak his hands through the side and touch me. I screamed at him. Taken aback, the man, identified as Rajesh, started stammering and apologised. Crew members intervened, but proved to be of little help. They had the audacity to tell me such things happen and that they will change the man’s seat. I demanded that he be offloaded, but was told that I would also have to get off to file a complaint.”

Tina then demanded to speak to the captain. “But he told me before take off, the crew is not responsible for anything that happens on board. I was appalled. Barring one family, no other passenger stood up for me.”

She also claims to have been yelled at by another passenger seated in front when requested to straighten his seat so that she could pull her tray out and have food.

The Jet Airways spokes-person said, “A guest filed a complaint with the cabin crew against another guest, seated in proximity to her, for inappropriate behaviour. The crew took due cognisance of the complaint and allocated a different seat to the latter guest. As per standard operating procedure, the cabin crew informed the security agencies, which have taken over the matter.”

Abhishek Bachchan slams Jet Airways on Twitter for delayed flight

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 29, 2016)

On Friday, Abhishek Bachchan flew to Chennai with friend Bunty Walia to root for his soccer team, Chennaiyin FC, which is taking on Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna’s Kerala Blasters today. The journey clearly wasn’t smooth as the Jet Airways flight was delayed for an hour-and-a-half due to “non-availability” of pilots.

So, AB, having boarded the flight and fastened his seat-belt, was left waiting and hoping for the pilots. The flight which was scheduled to depart at 10.30 am only took off at around 11.50 am.

“Question - if an airline is delayed, do we as passengers have the option to get off, like how passengers are off loaded if they are late?” Abhishek groused on the social media, adding, “Hey, @jetairways just to let you know that the entire aircraft is still waiting for you'll to get in touch. Also, what is operational reasons?”

Mirror reached out to the airlines too for an answer, but the airline didn’t answer after promising to revert in a couple of hours. We’re still waiting and hoping.

Preity Zinta 'off-loaded' from Jet Airways flight; misses important board meeting in Delhi

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 20, 2016)

Preity Zinta, who was travelling to Delhi on Wednesday missed her flight and took to Twitter to vent out her anger at the flight authorities. She wrote, “Jet Airways makes you wait for 1.5 hours in the lounge as they are delayed, then off loads you because their staff forgets to tell you in time they are boarding.“ She continued to grouse, saying, “Thank You Jet Airways for always being late, for making me miss my flight today and making your strongest supporter never wanting to fly with you again.“

Mirror learnt that the 41-year-old actress was visiting the Capital to attend a board meeting of her IPL cricket franchise team, Kings XI Punjab, which she described as the “most important meeting of this year“.

“The meeting was supposed to begin at 5.30 pm so it was important for her to catch the 3 pm flight. After she got off-loaded, Preity even tried to catch the next flight but it was full and the one after was too late for her to make it to the meeting. So she stayed back in Mumbai. She was to catch a flight to the US from Delhi on Wednesday night but had to reschedule her flight and will now fly from Mumbai,“ informed a source.

A Jet Airways spokesperson informed Mirror, “A guest waiting in the lounge to board flight 9W 305 would not board the flight as the guest was awaiting a parcel to arrive for her at the airport. Airline staff met her a few times requesting her to board as it was nearing flight closure time. Unfortunately the guest decided to wait for the parcel to arrive. The airline offloaded the guest's check in bag and offered her an alternate flight, which was declined.

Sonu Nigam is 'intolerant' about in-flight singing controversy

Debarati Sen (BOMBAY TIMES; February 6, 2016)

Sonu Nigam was the toast of trolls on Thursday after a video of the singer crooning on a flight mid-air using the aircraft's address system went viral recently. The video sparked a debate after the aviation safety regulator asked the airline to suspend the air hostesses onboard. The in-flight concert took place during a chartered flight from Jodhpur to Mumbai in the first week of January.

When contacted, the singer sounded upset and said, “This lack of common sense is real intolerance for me.“ He further explained, “I have witnessed an elaborate fashion show in an aircraft. I also know of concerts happening inside planes. I have seen pilots and crew members cracking jokes to loosen up passengers in other countries, which is so cool. To suspend crew members for asking me to sing on the address system, when the seat belt signs were off, and no announcements were to be made, is nothing less than punishing someone for spreading happiness."

When Sonu Nigam sang two songs from Veer-Zara and Refugee on a flight from Jodhpur to Mumbai on January 4, the video uploaded by passengers instantly went viral invoking the Directorate General of Civil Aviation's (DGCA) displeasure. On Monday, senior Jet Airways officials were summoned to the DGCA headquarters in Delhi and met Joint Director General Lalit Gupta and Deputy Director (air safety) Maneesh Kumar.

DGCA officials revealed that Gupta made it clear that the action of the crew indicated the airline wasn't serious about passenger safety. While the DGCA does not have a Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) about the use of the in-flight public address system making it compulsory for airlines to follow, the airlines have their own manuals that outline the rules, and Jet's only permits the cabin crew to use the public address system.

While DGCA has not issued any directives specifying what was required of Jet in writing, the airline grounded five cabin crew members after being pulled up verbally. The flight was chartered by the Nariman Point-based GeeCee Ventures Ltd for a private function hosted by its chairman Ashwin Kumar Kothari at Jodhpur's Umaid Bhavan Palace.

In a text message to this correspondent, Sonu said, "Hope next time someone doesn't dread going the extra mile to spread happiness amongst unsuspecting people."

In a separate statement issued by his office, Sonu had earlier said, "I have witnessed an elaborate fashion show in an aircraft. I have heard of small concerts happening too. I have seen pilots and crew members cracking jokes to lighten up passengers in other countries, which is so cool. To suspend crew members for asking me to sing on the address system, when the seat belt signs were off, and no announcements were to be made, is nothing less than punishing someone for spreading happiness. This act of lack of common sense, according to me, is real intolerance."

But Minister of state for civil aviation, Mahesh Sharma, backed DGCA. "The mic system should be used by authorised staff or captain of the plane only. I'm happy with Jet's initiatives," he said. Former DGCA chief Kanu Gohain opined that there was a way of using the public address system. "I don't remember such an incident in the past. There has to be a penalty imposed on the crew," Sharma said.
