Jatin on playing antagonist opposite Rajinikanth

Deep Saxena (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 1, 2026)

Actor Jatin Sarna, best known for the web series The Sacred Games and film Sikandar (2025) is set to star opposite Rajinikanth in the upcoming film Jailer 2. The actor says he feels blessed to be working with the superstar for the second time after Darbar (2020).

Calling it “a manifestation that played 2x,” Jatin says, “Many won’t believe but it’s true that for years, I have had Rajinikanth sir’s framed photo from the movie Kaala (2018) above the door in my living room where it’s written ‘Kya Re’. For me, he has been an inspiration.”

Speaking about how it felt to work with his childhood dream actor, the 41-year-old shares, “I grew up watching him and have so many memories attached to Rajini sir. The bright side is, I got great exposure in the South Indian industry. I learnt and spoke Tamil. Much to my surprise, I got a compliment that I was able to adapt to it.”

When asked whether he will also be sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan, who is rumoured to have a role in the film, Jatin says, “I have wrapped my shoot and I am not aware of any such development.”

I wasn’t getting the kind of work I wanted; I started feeling low and depressed-Jatin Sarna

Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 13, 2022)

Although Jatin Sarna’s role as Bunty in Sacred Games earned him widespread acclaim, the actor went through a period where he didn’t get the work he wanted. To top it off, the pandemic made it even more difficult for the 37-year-old to find roles that he loved.

“While worrying about tomorrow, I stopped living in the present. And instead of being grateful for what I have, I started looking at what else I could do. And that led me to depression,” Sarna says.

The ’83 actor continues, “I wasn’t getting the kind of work I wanted. And I used to wonder, ‘Why am I not getting work when people know I’m a good actor?’ I felt that nothing was happening around me and started feeling low and depressed. Moreover, I was staying alone. So I was even more unhappy because I love being around people.”

Sarna didn’t take “any clinical help” but “a year of introspection” and “good friends” helped him heal. “I am sorted now. I understood that it’s better to enjoy life. Above all, I had to think about myself that it is my life and I cannot destroy it. I thought of my family as well,” he ends.

2022 has been predicted for my marriage-Jatin Sarna

Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 12, 2022)

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, love is in the air. However, for actor Jatin Sarna, the cupid has not been that active.

But the actor admits that he has marriage on his mind. He discloses that as per his astrological charts, 2022 is the year he is supposed to get hitched. “I really want to get married and have kids. That is the plan. Bas ladki mile who understands me and my thoughts. The moment I find that girl, I’ll marry. 2022 has been predicted for my marriage (laughs),” Sarna shares.

He reveals that his hectic work life keeps him from having any personal life. “There’s no love life,” Sarna laments, and adds, “That is something I want to change.” says Sarna.

“My work life has overpowered my life so much that it is keeping girls away from me. Girls need attention and I have been this guy, jo time nahin de paata. And I don’t want to hurt someone. I disappear as I get immersed in my roles. And my partner shouldn’t suffer due to my practices,” explains Sarna.

The ‘83 actor, however, clarifies, “Whatever relationships I have been in, all the girls have been supportive. They loved me!” Sarna’s last relationship was almost three years ago in 2019 when he was in London. “We tried to work on it,” he mentions.

I rejected Tiger 3, Bachchan Pandey and 12 other films-Jatin Sarna

Vinay MR Mishra (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 12, 2022)

For Jatin Sarna, life has come full circle. The actor, who was once dropped from Akshay Kumar-led Airlift (2016), recently declined a role in Kumar’s upcoming comedy Bachchan Pandey. “I was heartbroken when I lost Airlift,” he recalls.

Talking about the project, which he lost to actor Purab Kohli, Sarna shares, “I’m a huge Akshay Kumar fan. When I was cast for the role, I was excited and my family thought it was my big break. But one day, I realised baat bigad gayi hai. I kept calling them, but there was no response. I went to meet director Raja Krishna Menon, and found out they had already started shooting. They dropped me and went with a known face.”

Interestingly, after watching the movie, the disappointment turned into relief, the 37-year old shares. “I felt better that it didn’t happen; it was not an exciting role anyway,” he adds.

The Sacred Games actor reveals the reason he rejected the upcoming movie was the role he was being offered. “I didn’t like the character; it didn’t really excite me,” he admits.

Not just Bachchan Pandey, Sarna confesses he has refused close to 12 movies recently, which also included the Salman Khan-starrer, Tiger 3. “I rejected 12 films. I was offered Tiger 3 and Ahmed Khan’s OM: The Battle Within with actor Aditya Roy Kapur,” he says and adds, “I don’t like dost, chacha, bhatija roles anymore. I want to work with all the stars, but it has to be substantial. Simply sharing screen space with big actors is not my priority.”

I am shocked. I wanted Yashpal Sharma to see me play him on screen-Jatin Sarna

Abhimanyu Mathur (BOMBAY TIMES; July 15, 2021)

Actor Jatin Sarna first met cricketer Yashpal Sharma in Dharamshala in 2019, where he was with the cast and crew of Kabir Khan’s '83, learning cricket. Jatin had been cast as Yashpal in the film and both men were curious to meet each other. “I was so nervous because I was worried what if I don’t meet his expectations or I’m doing something wrong,” recalls Jatin. However, the meeting went well and Sharma was even impressed by the young actor. Over the next seven days, Jatin picked the veteran cricketer’s brain and when they parted, it was with a promise to see the film together.

Alas, that won’t happen now. Yashpal Sharma passed away due to a heart attack on Tuesday morning. “I am shocked. This is so sad and unexpected,” says a visibly shaken Jatin, adding, “He was such a zinda-dil person and an unsung hero. He scored 89 against world champions West Indies in India’s first match of the 83 World Cup and was adjudged the man of the match. Nobody expected this young batsman to beat the giants. I always told him that this film would bring him and his contribution back into the limelight. It’s so sad he won’t be able to see it.”

Reminiscing about the tips he received from the cricketer, Jatin tells us, “I asked him everything, even the tiniest details about his game, such as which foot he used first in his stride to enter the ground. He told me that he would never ground his bat while batting. He always kept it in the air. I did not want to just copy his shots and mannerisms, but imbibe his passion for the game and dedication towards the country. That is who he was. I wanted to imbibe those qualities so that whenever someone, who knew him, saw me on screen, they’d say: Haan, yehi Yashpal Sharma hai!”

The actor is gutted that he wouldn’t be able to watch the movie with the man he portrays on screen. He tells us, “I wanted to whistle and scream when I would appear on screen as him, while sitting next to him. I will still do that, but he won’t be there. I won’t be able to see his reaction to all that. That is my misfortune.”

The release of 83, directed by Kabir Khan and starring Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic multiple times and is expected to release later this year.

YASHPAL SIR’S STORY WAS OF SHEER GRIT: TAHIR RAJ BHASIN

— Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; July 15, 2021)

Tahir Raj Bhasin, who will be seen essaying the role of Sunil Gavaskar in the upcoming film on the 83 World Cup, remembered the cricketer. He said, “Saddened by the demise of Yashpal Sharma. A story of sheer grit and incredible sporting spirit in the history books of Indian cricket. Yashpal sir was a rock on the pitch and a major reason for India’s 1983 World Cup win. Today, I remember his accomplishments and immense contributions that made the country proud. Condolences to his friends, family and fans. May his soul rest in peace.”

Dhairya Karwa, Jatin Sarna, Vijay Varma: New actors join the squad for Kabir Khan’s ’83

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; February 23, 2019)

If all goes as planned, director Kabir Khan and Ranveer Singh’s squad of ’83, the film based on India’s first win at the cricket world cup in London, has found three key players. Bombay Times has it that Dhairya Karwa, who played Captain Chandok in Aditya Dhar’s Uri, has been finalised to play Ravi Shastri, who is the current coach of the Indian cricket team. The actor was signed on just a few weeks ago.

Not just that, sources close to the project indicate that Gully Boy actor Vijay Varma has been approached to play Roger Binny, one of the most successful bowlers in the 1983 World Cup. He took 18 wickets in the tournament. Actor Jatin Sarna, a favourite in Anurag Kashyap’s clique of actors, has been cast to play Yashpal Sharma, who played some of his memorable innings in the World Cup. In the opening match, he was a top-scorer with 89 runs as India caused West Indies their first defeat in a world cup match. In the semi-finals against England, he had scored 61 runs.

The actors have already slipped into prep mode since the shoot commences in May and a bonding session is scheduled in March. Apart from Ranveer Singh, other actors finalised for the film are Ammy Virk, Hardy Sandhu, Chirag Patil, Jiiva, Sahil Khattar, Saqib Saleem and Tahir Raj Bhasin.
