Jailer 2 4 week OTT row: South film producers in thrall to streaming deals

Jailer 2 producers’ refusal to extend theatrical window in north throws spotlight on financial risks, multiplex revenues
Rajesh N Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; October 19, 2026)

Mumbai: Superstar Rajinikanth-starrer Tamil film Jailer 2 has skipped a Hindi theatrical release in leading multiplex chains PVR Inox and Cinepolis in northern India after its producer refused to extend the theatrical window from four weeks to eight weeks.

This standoff highlights southern producers' growing preference for the certainty of lucrative streaming rights deals over uncertain box-office returns.

With streaming deals increasingly compensating for lost theatrical revenue, a Hindi release for southern films is becoming a calculated commercial decision rather than an automatic part of a pan-India film strategy, producers and trade analysts told ET.

Some said by choosing not to take a financial risk, producers could be harming the overall ecosystem.

Increasingly, southern films have travelled to the hinterland of North India thanks to subtitling, faithful and fairly accurate and evocative dubbing, and social media discussions around them. Today, the northern market can contribute 10-50% to pan-India focused southern films depending on how well they resonate with audiences, they noted.

"When a film runs for eight weeks in theatres, everyone gains in the ecosystem," explained Devang Sampat, managing director of Cinepolis India. "Producers get bigger box office and a new market for their stars that carries into their next films. Also, a film is worth more when it goes to streamers."

South-based veteran film trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai also said, "Jailer 2 could have done extraordinary business if it had been released in national multiplex chains which account for nearly 70% of Hindi films' box-office collections."

Of its total India collection of Rs. 145 crore, Jailer 2 earned Rs. 10.9 crores from Hindi dubbed, which has been released in stand-alone theatres and smaller, regional multiplex chains. Interestingly, its Hindi dubbed collection jumped to Rs. 4.5 crores on the third day from Rs. 2.9 crores on the second day, indicating rising interest from Hindi audiences.

WILL NAYYI NAVELLI AND PRAHAAR WORK AT THE BOX OFFICE?

Tomorrow will see the release of two mid-sized but exciting films at the box office. Both the movies may not do well on the first day but have the potential to pick up if reports are on their side.

Nayyi Navelli stars Yami Gautam in the lead and marks her first association with director Aanand L Rai. The idea is very interesting - a woman is suspected of being a daayan by her husband's family, leading to madness. Yami's casting has further added to the buzz. This is her immediate release after her National Award win and therefore, the timing is just right.

However, the buzz is still limited for the film. But due to Yami Gautam and the horror-comedy genre, it'll definitely entice a section of moviegoers to check out the film. As of now, it looks like it'll open at Rs. 2-3 crores.

Prahaar, on the other hand, stars Rajkummar Rao as public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and focuses on how the 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab was convicted of his crimes. The teaser was decent but the trailer was quite powerful and managed to catch attention.

However, the film belongs to the niche genre and therefore, it would attract only some section of the moviegoers. Also, as it’s a Mumbai-based story, it’ll largely appeal to the people of the city. That’s the ugly truth of our country – people in other parts of India simply shun stories based in Mumbai. This was also visible in the box office performance of films based on the Mumbai underworld like Satya, Shootout At Lokhandwala, Shootout At Wadala, etc. Prahaar, sadly, will go the same way.

The courtroom drama should open at Rs. 1.50-2 crore and may go higher. Both films have released at a great time. Monday is holiday of sorts while Dussehra falls on Tuesday. In other words, these films will enjoy a five-day weekend.

(Crisp) Movie Review: JAILER 2 by FENIL SETA

Jailer was a fun, timepass watch and usually, sequels are not as good as the first part. But Jailer 2 is an exception. It begins on a rocking note and nicely takes the story forward from where the first part ended. The massy moments, obviously, are memorable. But the film also scores big on the humour quotient. In fact, the first half relies more on humour than action. However, whenever the action and massy moments kick in, they are sure to send the audience into a frenzy. The special appearances further add to the fun. On the flipside, the interest dips at the beginning of the second half. A few developments are convenient. Agreed that the Jailer series belongs to a space where one is not supposed to look for logic. Yet, these loopholes dent the impact, more so when they crop up even in emotional scenes. Speaking of performances, Rajinikanth is simply outstanding. At the age of 75, he continues to pull off such a performance with effortless swagger and charisma. Hats off! Vidya Balan looks stunning and delivers a stupendous performance. S J Suryah, as expected, rocks the show, while Mithun Chakraborty, too, makes his presence felt. Namo Narayana (Moorthi) is the surprise package of the film, and in some scenes in the first half, he even overshadows Rajinikanth! Yogi Babu raises laughs, while Suraj Venjaramoodu (Dileep) is memorable. As for the cameos, Hrithik Roshan steals the show, followed by Shiva Rajkumar, Mohanlal and Jackie Shroff. All in all, Jailer 2 is not just a worthy sequel but also manages to surpass the first part.

My rating - *** ½ out of 5!

What is the point of using social media to bring down someone?-Vijay Deverakonda

BOMBAY TIMES (October 11, 2026)

Tollywood actor Vijay Deverakonda pushed back against online criticism of his upcoming film 'Ranabaali,' alleging that much of the negativity directed at him is manufactured. The actor also questioned social media posts claiming audiences would prefer Rajinikanth’s 'Jailer 2' over his Telugu film, which releases a day later.

Vijay made the remarks during a press interaction in Hyderabad on Thursday, ahead of the trailer launch of 'Ranabaali'. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the film stars Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna. It is scheduled to release in theaters on October 16, while Nelson Dilipkumar’s 'Jailer 2,' starring Rajinikanth, arrives on October 15.

Vijay Deverakonda refuses to change for online trolls
When asked about the criticism he faces on social media, Vijay questioned whether he should change his personality to satisfy people who disapprove of him.

“Should I stop because someone thinks my dreams and hard work are unnecessary? Should I start acting because someone thinks my honesty comes off as arrogance? Should I step back because someone thinks my self-confidence comes across as pride? If they cannot digest my journey, must I sit at home?” he asked, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Vijay also urged people to concentrate on their own lives instead of criticizing others. He said personal growth and family responsibilities deserved greater attention.

“I won’t change; they’re the ones who need to. I wish people concentrated on bettering themselves for their families. I enjoy success stories a lot,” the actor said.

Actor claims 90% of online hate is manufactured
Vijay argued that much of the criticism directed at him should not be considered genuine hate. He alleged that coordinated activity was responsible for a significant portion of the negative comments appearing online.

“First of all, we can’t even call it hate. Because 90% of it is manufactured. There’s a batch that drops Reels at a time that they’d rather watch Jailer 2 over Ranabaali, despite it being a Telugu film,” he said.

Vijay Deverakonda says trolls are allegedly paid to target him
The actor also addressed the people he believes are behind the alleged campaigns. He suggested that those paying individuals to post negative content could eventually stop doing so as artificial intelligence takes over such tasks.

“People can have opinions, but if you see the same opinion everywhere, it’s manufactured. What they must understand is that the attacks they’re paid for today, AI will do tomorrow. No one can stop it. The person paying them will stop,” Vijay said.

The actor questions the use of social media
Vijay also spoke about how social media could be used more constructively. He questioned why online platforms were being used to bring people down instead of promoting positive initiatives.

“Use social media to promote and better things. What is the point of using it to bring down someone? But that’s the world we live in. What to do?” he added.

The actor’s comments came as discussion around 'Ranabaali' increasingly overlapped with comparisons to 'Jailer 2.' However, Vijay maintained that he would not change himself to appease online critics.

'Ranabaali' and 'Jailer 2' to release a day apart
'Jailer 2,' directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and headlined by Rajinikanth, is scheduled to release on October 15. 'Ranabaali,' featuring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, will reach theaters on October 16 under the direction of Rahul Sankrityan.

Actor Jatin Sarna, best known for the web series The Sacred Games and film Sikandar (2025) is set to star opposite Rajinikanth in the upcoming film Jailer 2. The actor says he feels blessed to be working with the superstar for the second time after Darbar (2020).

Speaking about how it felt to work with his childhood dream actor, the 41-year-old shares, “I grew up watching him and have so many memories attached to Rajini sir. The bright side is, I got great exposure in the South Indian industry. I learnt and spoke Tamil. Much to my surprise, I got a compliment that I was able to adapt to it.”

When asked whether he will also be sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan, who is rumoured to have a role in the film, Jatin says, “I have wrapped my shoot and I am not aware of any such development.”

Yashika Mathur (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 1, 2026)

After Mithun Chakraborty recently confirmed actor Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo in Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, HT City has learnt some exclusive details about the film.

A source tells us, “Shah Rukh’s character steps in the film when Rajinikanth’s character calls him in a situation of dire need. Both actors will be seen together in the frame and deliver a powerful performance. Shah Rukh plays the role of Rajinikanth’s close friend and confidante, whom he trusts with his life.”

The film is in its last leg of shooting and will wrap up the schedule this week in Chennai. However, SRK’s cameo hasn’t been shot yet. “They have got a separate date to shoot Shah Rukh’s part. It will happen sometime later this month,” another source reveals. The production is ensuring that every look is kept under wraps with heavy scrutiny over cameras on sets.

The Nelson Dilipkumar directorial will also mark Vidya Balan’s Tamil debut.

Vijay Sethupathi confirms cameo in Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2

Vijay Sethupathi confirms cameo in Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2

HINDUSTAN TIMES (January 16, 2026)

Following the massive success of Jailer (2023), director Nelson Dilipkumar moved swiftly to develop a sequel, with Rajinikanth confirmed to reprise his role as Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2. The latest addition to the star-studded cast is Vijay Sethupathi, who has now confirmed his cameo in the upcoming action-comedy. The Tamil film will once again feature Rajinikanth in the lead, with several high-profile actors set to make special appearances. Among them is Sethupathi, who revealed his involvement in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India.

The actor, known for films such as Vikram Vedha (2017), said that he had earlier decided to avoid cameo appearances and villainous roles. However, working with Rajinikanth prompted him to make an exception. “I have done a cameo in Jailer 2 because I love Rajinikanth sir. To be with him, I get to learn a lot. Superstars have survived in this industry for decades, there is so much to learn,” Sethupathi said.

In the same interaction, the actor explained why he has become selective about playing antagonists on screen. Sethupathi said he often faced emotional pressure from filmmakers to take up villain roles, which eventually began affecting his career as a leading man. “Now, I’m doing villain roles only if the script excites me,” he underlined.

He added that many scripts he receives portray antagonists as conventional characters designed solely to elevate the hero, leaving little room for novelty. “Since most of them are very normal and nothing extraordinary, I’ve chosen not to do such roles,” Sethupathi said.

Jailer 2 is currently in development, with further casting details expected to be announced soon.

Stars aligning for a reel good 2026 in Bollywood

A slate of Hindi, regional and Hollywood films lined up for release may help sustain 2025’s box office momentum
Rajesh N Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; January 8, 2026)

Mumbai: Bollywood's getting ready for a blockbuster year. Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Sunny Deol, Ranbir Kapoor all have releases lined up, in what's going to be the most superstar-heavy lineup of films since before the pandemic. A broad range of big-budget Hindi titles are scheduled to hit theatres, complemented by a strong slate of regional movies and Hollywood offerings.

Down south, Rajnikanth, Vijay, Yash, Prabhas, and Kamal Haasan have movies coming up, apart from which Mammootty and Mohanlal will be seen together in a movie (Patriot) for the first time in 17 years.

Producers, distributors, and trade analysts are predicting a record haul, extending the buoyant momentum after a reassuring 2025. Net box office receipts may surge 25-30%, reaching Rs. 14,052 crore to Rs. 14,614 crore in 2026, from Rs. 11,242 crore last year, going by some of the more conservative estimates.

"2026 could be the year of highest box office collection for the Indian film industry," said Vikram Malhotra, founder and CEO, Abundantia Entertainment. "Beyond the conventional big-star films, 2026 will be about films which will connect deeply with audiences. I see sleeper hits become monsters at the box office. In addition, genre experiments will find takers."

A key reason for the industry optimism is the wide array of movies lined up this year. These include Ramayana, Love & War, Lahore 1947, King, Battle Of Galwan, Drishyam 3, Dhurandhar 2 and Border 2. Highly anticipated regional films include Jailer 2, Jana Nayagan, Toxic. Hollywood films such as The Odyssey, Dune: Part Three, Moana, Avengers: Doomsday, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are also expected to boost box office receipts.

"Even by conservative estimates, the Indian box office collection may grow at least in the range of 25-30% in 2026 compared to 2025 because of diverse offerings across Hindi, regional and Hollywood," said Girish Johar, film producer and industry expert.

Big Year Ahead

The number of superstar releases is another reason for the optimism. "2026 is indeed a big year," said Navin Shah, joint MD, EMC Solutions Worldwide, a leading company in branded entertainment. "It is important to note that most superstars such as Ranbir Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, and Sunny Deol have either one or two releases in a single year. This is happening after a long time."

Trade analysts predict the share of Hindi films in net box office collection to climb to 45-50% this year, from a historical average of 35-40%. Premium ticket pricing will also drive growth.

"There is at least one notable film which is either VFX-driven spectacle or has a big superstar in every quarter of 2026," said Shaaminder Malik, film distributor and trade analyst. "This provides room for premium ticket pricing, especially for formats such as IMAX and 4DX, thereby boosting total box office collection."

Growing Gen Z attendance at movie theatres is also boosting industry confidence, said producers. "Apart from a fantastic lineup, a big positive for the industry is the theatre attendance of Gen Z audience, which increased by 25% in 2025. This trend is likely to continue in 2026," said Sunir Kheterpal, producer, Athena E&M.

Vidya Balan to play Mithun Chakraborty’s daughter in Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2

Vidya to play Mithun’s daughter in Rajini’s Jailer 2

Yashika Mathur (HINDUSTAN TIMES; October 25, 2025)

Recent reports had suggested that Vidya Balan will be sharing the screen with Rajinikanth (74) in Jailer 2. HT City has now confirmed the news; the 46-year-old will indeed be a part of the film, marking her full-fledged Tamil debut after a brief appearance in Nerkonda Paarvai (2019). The film has reportedly completed more than half of its shoot.

A reliable source from the production reveals, “Vidya plays the role of (actor) Mithun Chakraborty’s eldest daughter. Mithun is the leading antagonist in the film and will be seen alongside (actor) Rajinikanth sir.”

The source further adds, “The film is currently being shot in Chennai and will move into post-production by January.” After wrapping up the Chennai schedule, the team will reportedly move to Goa for the remaining two months of shooting starting late October.

The makers of the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial are aiming for an August 2026 release. Attempts to reach Vidya and her team went unanswered but a representative from the film shared, “It’s too early to say anything.”
