Images: Irfan Pathan wraps up portions of his Tamil thriller Cobra in Russia

Soumitra Das (BOMBAY TIMES; March 7, 2021)

Irfan Pathan, who is all set to make his debut on the big screen with Ajay Gnanamuthu’s Tamil film Cobra, is back in India after completing another schedule in Russia. In a chat with us, the cricketer-turned-actor opens up about the challenges of shooting in extreme weather conditions, his elder brother Yusuf Pathan’s retirement, the noise around the quality of the pitches for the India-England test series and more. Excerpts:

‘IT WAS MINUS 20 DEGREE CELSIUS AT ST. PETERSBURG DURING THE SHOOT’
I have been to Kashmir and many other destinations during winter, but I have never been to a colder place than St. Petersburg. It was minus 20 degree Celsius during the shoot and the moment I took off my headscarf, my ears went red and I started shivering. It was absolutely crazy but thankfully, there were a couple of scenes where I had to run and that made me feel better. I also spotted a river that was entirely covered in snow. I even slipped on the snow once but overall, I enjoyed the entire experience. I was there with my family for a week and Imran (son) loved snowboarding. Safa (wife) bought a snowball maker for Imran and he was making snowballs everywhere! I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and although most of the local people we worked with had already been vaccinated, we still took utmost precautions on the sets.

‘EVEN THOUGH I’VE RETIRED, MY FIRST PRIORITY WILL ALWAYS BE CRICKET’
Even though I have retired from the game, my first priority will always be cricket. I love doing commentary and helping out junior cricketers whenever I can. I have got offers to do Malayalam and Telugu films as well, but I first want to finish my ongoing project and see how the audiences respond to it. If the feedback is good and I get time after my other commitments to cricket, I am open to doing more movies.

‘YUSUF HAS ALWAYS LOOKED AFTER ME’
When I look back at Yusuf ’s career, I feel extremely proud of what he has achieved for India and even in franchise cricket. The number of man-of-the-match awards that he has won in his career is not a joke. I made my debut for India much before him and he embraced that situation gracefully. He has always looked after me and that has never changed. A lot of people would say, “Chhota bhai toh Indian team mein aa gaya, bada bhai kab aayega?”

It’s a difficult situation for anyone, but he never bothered about what people had to say and kept working on his game. Today, the results are there for everyone to see. When we look at the number of trophies at home, which includes two World Cups, both of us feel happy about our cricket careers.

‘I AM IN FAVOUR OF TEAMS HAVING HOME ADVANTAGE’
I have been reading about the criticism of the pitches for the India-England test series. I am in favour of teams having home advantage. After all, you can’t play at neutral venues all the time. The Indian team has never cribbed about the pitches while playing abroad, and given the kind of team we have right now, we can win in any country, like we proved in Australia. Having said that, I would like to see test matches lasting for at least three to four days.

It feels wonderful to resume shooting for a film amid the pandemic-Irfan Pathan

Soumitra Das (BOMBAY TIMES; January 18, 2021)

Former cricketer Irfan Pathan, who will be making his big-screen debut with the upcoming Tamil film Cobra, recently resumed shooting for the film in Chennai and says that it feels good to be shooting again after a long break. “Of course, it feels good to be shooting for a film again amid the Coronavirus pandemic. While the experience is completely different as compared to shooting before the pandemic, it was important to resume working while following all the safety precautions,” he shares.

‘THE MORE RESTRICTIONS ARE THERE, THE MORE COMFORTABLE I FEEL’
I had a three-day outdoor schedule in Chennai and soon, I will go back for a longer schedule. We are being very cautious while shooting and every precaution is being followed on the set. While doing IPL commentary and for the league I played in Sri Lanka, I was living in a bio-bubble and while it is never easy when your movement is restricted, I understand that this is much-needed for everyone’s safety. In fact, the more restrictions are there, the more comfortable I feel. As long as we are taking adequate precautions and looking after ourselves well, resuming work is fine. When I go for a long schedule, I take Safa (his wife) and my son Imran along.

‘IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH VIKRAM’
Apart from being a great actor, Chiyaan Vikram is a really fabulous and humble guy. I loved his performances in films like Aparichit and I, and have always liked successful people who have humility. I have picked up quite a few Tamil words while working in this film and it has been a great learning experience. I think people will be pleasantly surprised with my performance. In fact, I was offered another film a few months back, but I refused the offer as I did not like the role.

‘I BELIEVE 2021 WILL BE A MUCH BETTER YEAR FOR EVERYBODY’
2020 was a very difficult year for everyone. Many of us lost our loved ones, there were job cuts and people faced financial woes like never before. A lot went wrong for us and now, it’s time to focus on our mental and physical well-being. Jab haalat itni mushkil hoti hai, uss ke baad aasani hoti hai. Aur wo aasani der tak chalti hai! 2020 was one of the darkest phases in our lives and I believe that 2021 will be a much better year for everybody.

I am not nervous about doing my first film-Irfan Pathan

Soumitra Das (BOMBAY TIMES; October 18, 2019)

Irfan Pathan, who has earlier impressed his fans with his singing videos on social media and his stint on dance reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded, is set to make his debut on the big screen soon. Irfan will be seen playing an important role in an upcoming Tamil film, tentatively titled Chiyaan Vikram 58 and starring Vikram in the lead role.

Confirming the development, Irfan tells us, “It took me a while to say ‘yes’ to the offer because although I have participated in reality shows before and done commentary, this is completely new territory for me. R Ajay Gnanamuthu, the director of the film, had even come to my house in Vadodara to talk about it. My first question to him was, ‘Why me?’ But he was very clear that the role really suits me and after that, I was convinced. It will be a real honour to work with Vikram, who is an amazing actor and has done some fabulous movies. My family is also happy with this decision.”

Is he nervous about his big-screen debut? Irfan shares, “I have played for India at the highest level in front of thousands of spectators at different venues. No nervousness can be compared to that feeling. At least I will have retakes here! So, I am not nervous.”

R Ajay Gnanamuthu, the director of this upcoming action thriller, tells us, “Irfan sir will be seen portraying a Turkish character in the film, and it is a very important role. While the film is being made in Tamil, it will also release in Telugu and Hindi. We plan to start shooting towards the end of this month.”

Asked about how they zeroed in on Irfan, Ajay shares, “For this role, we needed someone really good looking. After watching Irfan sir’s photos on Instagram and some of his videos on a video messaging app, we approached him with the offer. Initially, he thought that we were joking because he has never acted in any project before. But I am glad that after I narrated the story to him, he eventually agreed to do the film. I am sure that it is going to be real treat for his fans.”
