"Judge it on trailer, not reviews": Mrunal Thakur appeals for fair chance for Gumraah

Judge it on trailer, not reviews: Mrunal Thakur appeals for fair chance for 'Gumraah'

With Gumraah running in theatres, Mrunal Thakur urges audiences to judge a film on the basis of the trailer, not the ‘reviews or buzz’
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 9, 2023)

Almost half a decade in the Hindi film industry, yet Mrunal Thakur has never opted for the easy way out, always seeking diverse characters to showcase and explore her skill set. She reasons that it is not only to keep things interesting but also to ensure that the audience finds her in every genre.

“All I want to do is entertain people across genres,” she says, while assuring that she will keep doing romances. “The kind of romantic scripts I am now getting [after Sita Ramam] are so beautiful. And for the section that might like a thriller, for them, I have a Gumraah.”

The Aditya Roy Kapur-starrer, the remake of the 2019 Tamil hit Thadam, was released in theatres this Friday. Thakur believes that while making good content is important, its merit doesn’t matter if it is not promoted enough for the audience to know about its existence.

“Good films are being made, but people aren’t watching them because they aren’t aware. Earlier, I used to find it difficult to [promote films], but I am getting better at it. I realise it is a necessity,” says the actor, who has been observing how people are judging the film solely because it is a remake. Thakur urges people to give Gumraah a chance based on the trailer and the novelty of its casting and not on the “buzz and reviews”.

“Yes, Gumraah is a remake, but watch it for the director’s [Vardhan Ketkar] take [on the original], for Aditya who has given the best performance of his career, and because I haven’t done something like this before,” she appeals.

Thakur, who became one of the most sought-after actors post the multilingual film Sita Ramam (2022), has four more films in the pipeline this year—Pippa, Pooja Meri Jaan, Lust Stories 2 and Nani 30. “The idea is to show my versatility. Today, I have the confidence to look a filmmaker in the eyes and tell them, ‘Give me any role, and I would be able to perform it well’. There is nothing that I cannot do, and I want my audience to see that too.”

(Crisp) Movie Review: GUMRAAH by FENIL SETA

Gumraah starts on a thrilling note; the entry scenes of the characters and the murder scene are well executed. The flashback scenes put a halt to the thrill factor. But the romantic track is lovely and keep the interest going. Sadly, after a point, the film becomes messy. The family angle fails to stir emotions. And the climax is the biggest downer. The suspense is random and very unconvincing. Speaking of performances, Aditya Roy Kapur looks suave and dashing. As the sophisticated guy, he is good but as the ruffian, he could have done a better job. Mrunal Thakur's entry is superb but then she disappears until the second half. Performance-wise, she's first-rate. Ronit Roy is dependable. Vedika Pinto has a nice screen presence but doesn't have much to do after a point. Deepak Kalra (Chaddi) is passable. Songs don't work. All in all, Gumraah is disappointing.

TWO DRY WEEKS BEFORE THE GRAND EID RELEASE, KISI KA BHAI KISI KI JAAN

Last week's release Bholaa, directed by Ajay Devgn, is having a decent run at the box office. It stars Ajay in the lead role as well and it was released on a Thursday, March 30, to take advantage of the Ram Navami holiday. It opened at Rs. 10.25 crores and then dropped on Friday, as it collected Rs. 6.50 crores. Thankfully, there was a jump on Saturday (Rs. 10.50 crores) and Sunday (Rs. 12.75 crores). It is holding well on the weekdays and it is expected to collect around Rs. 55 crores in the first week. The collections are not the best but are respectable. Bholaa has a chance of collecting around Rs. 80-90 crores in its lifetime. Crossing the Rs. 100 crores mark seems doubtful at this point.

Meanwhile, tomorrow will see the release of Gumraah. It is the official remake of Thadam and stars Aditya Roy Kapur in a double role. Mrunal Thakur and Ronit Roy also feature in the film, which is an action thriller.

The trailer of Gumraah is alright while the songs haven't worked. The awareness of the film is very limited. However, since it releases on the Good Friday holiday, it'll have some advantage. The opening will be in the range of Rs. 1 crore. If the word of mouth is very positive, it can see a jump. Or else, it will have a lifetime in the range of Rs. 10 to 15 crores.

The other major release is the Hollywood animation flick, The Super Mario Bros Movie. As the name suggests, it is based on a popular video game. Though ticket sales are limited, it can surprise and get a good turnout, especially in urban multiplexes. The Super Mario Bros Movie will have extensive paid previews today, that is, Thursday, April 6 from 6:00 pm onwards.

Next week, too, won't be an exciting one and all eyes are now on the Eid release, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. Starring Salman Khan, it will release in theatres on Friday, April 21.

The battle has always been between men in such movies. In Gumraah, I am happy to be on the other side-Mrunal Thakur

The film marks Mrunal Thakur’s first project with Aditya Roy Kapur

Mrunal on subverting the tropes of a leading lady with Gumraah, which sees her as a cop in a face-off against Aditya’s character
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; June 4, 2022)

At some point in their career, almost every Hindi film hero has played an upright, no-nonsense cop on screen. In comparison, the opportunity has been few and far between for leading ladies. Which is why Mrunal Thakur is stoked to don the khaki uniform for Gumraah. “To be associated with an impactful and fierce character is a dream for every actor. The physicality of the character is starkly different; there’s a certain posture and body language that I’m training for,” she shares.

Also starring Aditya Roy Kapur in the lead, the official remake of Tamil hit Thadam (2019) sees Thakur as a cop investigating a murder case where two lookalikes are the primary suspects. Vardhan Ketkar’s directorial venture went on floors late last year, with the second schedule being wrapped up only last month. Thakur says she had to prep extensively for the role — from adopting the confident gait of a policewoman, to incorporating strength training in her fitness regimen so as to become action-ready.

“A female cop has to find her footing in a police station and solve cases, while making sure that no one intimidates her. She is a woman in a man’s world. It is interesting to explore that facet of her personality. I visited the police station close to my house to see what women are like at work. One can notice that they are tremendously confident and unusually alert. I wanted to observe and [imbibe] these traits. I also had to rework my dialogue delivery so as to say the lines more firmly. I can’t be ‘cute’, as my crew members keep saying.”

Unlike her last few films Toofaan (2021) and Jersey where she played the leading man’s romantic interest, Gumraah will see Thakur in a face-off with Kapur’s character. Does she view this as a subversion of tropes? “Absolutely! The battle has always been between men in such movies. Here, I am happy to be on the other side. For a change, my character is not sweet, kind, or polite. I had to break out of my own conditioning to attempt this role.”
