I found The Royals character interesting, especially how he has been written for Season 2-Dino Morea

Dino Morea: Acting isn’t just about performance, appearance matters too

Dino Morea opens up about staying fit at 49, playing a quirky character called Salad in The Royals, and why being good-looking still matters in a visual world
Komal RJ Panchal (MID-DAY; June 11, 2025)

He was once the heartthrob of an entire generation, fondly dubbed Bollywood’s chocolate boy. Now, Dino Morea is back on screen as Salad — yes, Salad — in a vibrant web series that blends style, sass, and serious acting chops. But don’t be fooled by the quirky name. Short for Salahuddin, Salad may be a side dish for now, but he’s setting the stage to become a principal character in season two.

In this free-flowing chat, the actor opens up about making a strong impact in a limited role, his passion for fitness, why appearance still matters in showbiz, and how he’s maintained that famously enviable physique — all while keeping things light, fun and absolutely real. Here’s Dino, unfiltered.

So, let’s start with the obvious question — your character is called Salad in The Royals. Fans think you could easily be dessert!
(Laughs) That’s a great question. Honestly, I would’ve loved to be dessert! But yes, the name — Salad — is actually short for Salahuddin. So they just went with ‘Salad’. And I guess, appetiser, setting things up for the next season.

You looked fantastic on screen — and not just physically, your character brought so much energy. But when you’re part of a breezy show where everyone looks great, what’s your takeaway as an actor?
Thank you for saying that. I did the show because I found the character really interesting, especially how he has been written for season two. In season one, he appears in maybe three episodes. But I loved the flamboyance, the quirkiness and the madness. It was short, but I wanted to make an impact — and I think I did. And yes, I believe the character has great scope if developed well in the next season.

You’ve carried the ‘chocolate boy’ tag for years. Now, at 49, you’re still turning heads. What’s the secret?
Firstly, thank you. That’s kind. I’ve always taken care of myself, even as a child playing lots of sport. As I got older, I realised how important health really is. We’re in a visual medium — acting isn’t just about performance, appearance matters too. I make sure I look after myself. Fitness, fun, laughter — that’s my mantra.

What’s your fitness routine like? And what advice would you give to someone starting at 49 or 50?
The most important thing is to start. Even if that’s just walking. Then, gradually move to light jogging, resistance training and weights. As we age, our muscle mass reduces, testosterone levels drop, joints weaken, so resistance work is vital. Therabands, push-ups, pull-ups, squats, all help. No gym? No problem. Do it at home. Just begin.

Can you shed light on your diet? How do you manage food, especially when it’s an everyday thing?
I stick to home-cooked food mostly. Fresh vegetables, good oil, fruits. Avoid processed food. Sugar? I call it poison, avoid it. Alcohol and aerated drinks too. I do binge sometimes on pani puri, sev puri, gulab jamun, all of it! But in moderation. And I balance it with exercise. You can indulge, but you have to pay for it, with effort.

Social media can mess with people’s self-esteem. what’s you message for people struggling with body image or chasing shortcuts?
There are no shortcuts to good health. No growth hormone, no instant fixes. It’s a process. Your journey is yours alone. Social media isn’t real. You’re not racing against anyone else, it’s just you versus you. Exercise, eat well, and watch your body change naturally. It’ll make you happy. Don’t do it for validation, do it for yourself.

Missing workouts?
“I have off days! I sometimes skip workouts. I sometimes binge. But I make up for it. Life is about balance. Soul food is important too. Eat what makes you smile, then get back to routine. And once you start, once the dopamine hits, you won’t feel like stopping. It’s addictive in the best way,” says Morea.

Breakups are tough, especially if you’re the one who didn’t initiate it-Dino Morea

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; April 20, 2025)

Every year, Dino Morea looks forward to Easter brunch. This time, he got into the Easter spirit a little early with us, enjoying a fun lunch with delicious food, while posing with classic Easter eggs and bunnies.

‘Easter is about hope and new beginnings’
Holding up a few colourful, chocolatey eggs, Dino shares, “The egg stands for life after death. It’s a symbol of a fresh start and pretty much captures the whole meaning of Easter — Christ’s resurrection after Good Friday. And the bunny is all about abundance, because well, they multiply fast. So yeah, for me, Easter is about hope and new beginnings.”

‘Every day, I’m out there letting people know I’m working and looking for great roles’
As Easter is all about fresh starts, Dino’s all geared up for what 2025 has in store. He’s got some exciting projects in the pipeline – like Housefull 5 and the web series The Royals.

“Showbiz is like a roller coaster – some days are amazing, some not so much. It’s a constant hustle. Every day, I’m out there letting people know I’m working and looking for great roles. I believe there will be a moment when things will pick up again. I also believe in luck – some people have stars that align perfectly, and for others, it’s all about the grind. I’m in that second category right now. I had that lucky streak before, but something shifted along the way,” he says, and adds, “Getting in (the industry) was easy. But staying there? That’s the real challenge. Making the right choices, staying relevant – it’s tough.”

‘Love and heartbreak are all part of life’
In one of his earlier interviews, Dino hinted at being in a relationship. Ask him if he’s dating someone, and he says, “I won’t answer that directly, but I love love. It’s an amazing feeling. Maybe I am in love, maybe not. I’m not denying it, but I’m not confirming it either.”

Talking further about love, he shares, “You grow from your experiences, and you get wiser. Love is beautiful.” On heartbreak, Dino, who has dated women from the industry in the past, says, “Everyone’s moved on and there’s no bad blood. If we bump into each other, it’s always nice. Breakups are tough, especially if you’re the one who didn’t initiate it. However, love and heartbreak are an inevitable part of life. You’ve got to respect each other and move forward.”

‘I can’t cook at all, so I miss my mom’s food a lot’
Every year, Dino celebrates the day with his parents and brothers, who live in Bandra, close to his home.

He shares, “Our cook whips up a feast. I can’t cook at all, so I miss my mom’s food a lot. This year, though, my parents are in Bengaluru. Growing up, Easter was a mix of my mom’s home-cooked meals and pasta, because my dad is Italian. This time, it’s going to be me with my brothers and some friends. Our cook’s planning to make roast chicken, mashed potatoes, salads – basically a full English spread.”

Festive days also mean catching up with his Bandra buddies like Malaika Arora. “We always exchange messages, chat about the season, and sometimes even attend mass together,” he says.

I was offered some really terrible movies-Dino Morea

I WAS OFFERED
SOME TERRIBLE
FILMS: DINO

Actor Dino Morea, who rang in his 49th birthday on Monday, talks about his long absence from Hindi films and his newfound perspective on life
Akash Bhatnagar (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 10, 2024)

Dino Morea, who celebrated his 49th birthday on Monday, tells us that age has given him a new perspective on life. “As you grow older, you understand relationships, life and people better,” the actor says, adding, “You begin to understand that time is valuable. Now, I don’t want to waste time, I’d rather spend it with people I love and whose company I enjoy.”

This year, Morea had a working birthday on the sets of Housefull 5, something he considers a good omen. While he was part of web shows like Mentalhood (2020) and South films, this marks his first featuring role in a Hindi film after Pyaar Impossible (2010).

Ask about his absence from the big screen and the actor shares, “There were really some terrible movies being offered — and I’m not exaggerating. But if I would have taken on those films, I would have dug my grave even deeper. So, I had to sit at home and work on my skills.”

He admits there were times when his insecurities kicked in: “When I said no to films and people questioned my absence, I would think, ‘Should I take up subpar projects just to be seen?’ There were times when I questioned what I could do as films are all I know. That’s why I began producing, to stay close to the industry.”

Given his newfound outlook on relationships, coupled with the fact the he played a single father in Mentalhood, does he now seek to embrace parenthood in real life? “Not as a single dad, [but] I want to find a partner at some point in the near future. I’d love to have children. Soon, I might change my mind, find a partner and have kids; you never know. When that happens, I’ll announce it,” he says.

Despite the lows, Morea reveals that he is in a much better space in life, mentally and professionally. “I want to have fun in every moment, as well as hustle hard and figure out my purpose in life. Ultimately, I am happy and that’s the most important thing,” the actor wraps ups.

My dad’s family originally lived in Italy; Christmas in Europe is beautiful-Dino Morea

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS WERE A RIOT WITH MY BROTHERS: DINO MOREA
Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; December 24, 2023)

For Dino Morea, who joined us for a pre-Christmas lunch, the festive season is all about spending time with family and gorging on some scrumptious food. While enjoying every bit of the spread laid out on the table, the actor shared some special memories associated with Xmas.

‘We used to go carol singing with our friends’
Recalling the celebrations in Bengaluru, where he grew up, Dino says, “We stayed in a locality where Christmas would be celebrated in full swing. We would go carol singing with our friends to different houses and collect money, with which we would buy food, decorations and have a little party.” Dino grew up with two brothers, Nicolo and Santino.

“Christmas holidays were a riot with them,” he says, as he looks forward to spending time with them and his parents at home in Bandra this year. “Our Christmas lunch consists of a delicious spread and, of course, some wine. We set up a table in the garden and go on a binge,” he says.

‘Christmas in Europe is beautiful’
Dino, who has Italian roots, also remembers visiting the country to bring in the festivities. “We would go to Italy for a holiday. Christmas in Europe is beautiful. People associate it with snow and winter, and that is what you get in most of Europe. My dad’s family originally lived in Italy, but over a period of time, they moved to different parts of Europe,” shares Dino.

‘I hosted grand Christmas bashes at my home in Bandra’
Talking about Christmas parties, Dino shares, “I did host two very grand ones when I bought my house in Bandra. There were some 250 people in the house, and I felt my house would be destroyed. There was chaos everywhere. After that, I decided to only host intimate parties.”

‘I want to keep doing more work’
With a few days left for the beginning of the New Year, Dino looks back at the year that was and says, “2023 was full of ups and downs, personally and professionally. Life is never smooth sailing. I am hustling, and I love hustling every day. There is a lot of hope for a good 2024. I aim to have my movie green-lit as a producer. I am looking forward to starting two new shows. I am happy to do great web shows. As for movies, it is a different process, but I feel if you are consistently doing something, more will happen. That is what I aim to do in 2024… do more and keep shooting, and then a big movie will come my way (smiles).”

Dino’s ultimate Christmas getaway
“I would like to go to any place that has snow. I want to enjoy some hot eggnog in the chilled weather. Maybe Finland, where you can see reindeer and Northern lights. Imagine riding on the sleds in the snow, staying in an igloo… I have not experienced this, but I would love to. That would be the perfect white Christmas. Cold, but beautiful!”

Bipasha Basu and I decided not to do any more films together as people would get bored-Dino Morea

Dino Morea heads down south

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; July 5, 2023)

Dino Morea has been in the industry for over two decades and has seen his share of ups and downs. After a break and some self-introspection, the actor came back in the news with OTT shows like Tandav and The Empire. Dino, who is all pepped now, tells BT, “If I am still being offered work and getting acknowledged for it, I guess it means I have done something right.” Excerpts:

‘My career started with a bang, then it slipped and hit rock bottom’
Talking about his Bollywood journey, he says, “At one point, I was doing the same thing repeatedly. There was a time when filmmakers were casting Bipasha (Basu) and me in films, as we were looked upon as a hit jodi. I think we did around five films together. Then both of us consciously decided not to do any more films together because, ultimately, people would get bored. Then I did some ‘guy films’ like Plan and Fight Club – Members Only. My career started with a bang, then it slipped and hit rock bottom. There are times when you are tempted to pick up a small role because the money offered is huge, but you have to stand by your decision. Today, my driving force is nothing but good roles.”

He adds, “Sustaining in this industry is tough. If you are not from the film industry, you often think you are being guided correctly by people who are from here, but later you realize that everyone is only looking out for themselves. The film industry taught me a lot. It opened my eyes in so many ways. When your stocks are low, people will not give you movies and that’s the time you have to work on yourself and hope that something comes your way and grab it before somebody else does.”

‘I am dying to do a big theatrical film, something that could be hugely successful like Raaz’
At one point, the actor started turning down offers, elaborating on that phase of his life, the Tandav actor says, “I had started doing smaller roles with the hope that one day I will get a bigger role in a big film. Then one day, I decided that I should start declining projects that had nothing for me to offer. I was worried about whether I will get work in films again. Because, as they say, out of sight is out of mind. There are times when you are tempted to pick up a small role because the money offered is huge, but you have to stand by your decision. Today, my driving force is nothing but good roles. Fortunately, the OTT space opened, offers started coming in, and people are appreciating my work. I am all pepped up now. Give me a great role and I will smash it. Today, I am dying to do a really big Hindi theatrical film… something that becomes hugely successful, commercially, like Raaz.”

‘They always love to see a bad boy on screen’
In recent times, Dino has particularly enjoyed essaying characters with grey shades, like he did in his Telugu debut Agent earlier this year. He shares, “Gone are the days of being heroes or villains, today, it is all about playing characters. Every film is about characters and if you play your character well, then people will love it. It doesn’t matter whether you are playing an antagonist or a protagonist, it is about what you are adding to the story. As a villain, you can bring a certain madness to the screen. The audience loves to see a bad boy on screen.”

It has been nearly three years since I have seen my face without any facial hair-Dino Morea

Dino Morea on turning producer with 'Helmet': This is a film which has been made with a sense of humour

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; January 16, 2023)

He’s been in the industry for over two decades, but Dino Morea says this is the most interesting phase of his career. He is enthused about what lies ahead as he believes that filmmakers are now seeing him in a different light. After his villainous act in the period web series The Empire, he’s all set to make his Telugu debut with Surender Reddy’s spy thriller titled Agent, where once again, he will be seen as the antagonist.

Talking about how he enjoys doing action sequences, Dino says, “In the earlier phase of my career, filmmakers only perceived me as this sweet, good-looking boy next door. I was offered to play a romantic hero, but never got an opportunity to do an all-out action film. I have a knack for action as I am fit and flexible, but no one has ever tapped that part of my personality. In Agent, I will get to do some raw brutal action and I’m excited about that.”

While growing up, Dino loved binging on hardcore action content and so he’s thrilled to be a part of the genre now. He shares, “It’s quite an exciting genre as I have loved watching such films as an audience. So, for me to act in an action film where the good guys or the underdogs win is what I was always looking forward to. Some of the action movies (and franchises) I grew up watching were First Blood, Commando, Rocky, Rambo, Mission: Impossible, Die Hard and The Bourne Identity. Closer home, I have enjoyed watching Amit ji’s (Amitabh Bachchan) action films like Deewar, Trishul and Don.”

Not only did he enjoy watching these, but they also inspired him to turn to action. And then there were his favourite action stars like, “Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John-Claude Van Damme, Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt.” He was in awe of seeing them do action on screen.

Talking about his look from the film, which also stars Akhil Akkineni and Mammootty, Dino says, “I play an agent who’s gone rogue. He’s quite a crazy guy, and an anti-hero. I am flaunting long hair and a beard. It has been nearly three years since I have seen my face without any facial hair. I grew my hair and beard for The Empire and haven’t cut it since then (laughs),” he shares.

So, does he enjoy playing characters with grey shades? “There’s a certain madness you can bring to a negative character and the audience loves watching that. Even as a kid, when I watched James Bond movies, I remembered the villains more than the protagonist. Look at The Dark Knight, the character of the Joker is unforgettable in that film,” he explains.

While Dino has been a part of South films like Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000), Julie (2006) and Solo (2017), with Agent, he makes his debut in Telugu cinema. “They are making fantastic movies. We all know that some of their films have been huge blockbusters. I am working with director Surender Reddy, who has already made some highly successful films. So, why not? I am an actor and I need to be seen in a different kind of cinema and the story just floored me,” he signs off.

20 Years of Raaz: Dino Morea, Bipasha Basu, Vikram Bhatt go down memory lane

Juhi Chakraborty (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 1, 2022)

Counted among the best-known Indian horror films, Raaz completes two decades today. Actor Dino Morea, who starred in the 2002 film, shares that besides the movie’s story and music, his onscreen chemistry with actor Bipasha Basu Singh Grover, his then girlfriend, still remains a talking point. “When people saw our chemistry on the big screen, they immediately fell in love with us,” he says.

Morea adds that working with her was “fantastic”. “It makes shooting far more easier when you know the person. Our off-screen romance helped us have that chemistry on the screen,” he shares.

Back then, the horror genre was still reeling from the stigma of being reduced to B-grade films. So did Morea have any apprehensions about choosing it as his second film? “No. I was getting to work with the Bhatts, who had made some fantastic films. It was an honour for me to be getting a big film,” he shares.

Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 1, 2022)

While Raaz was a turning point for Bipasha Basu Singh Grover, the actor wasn’t the first choice for the lead character, Sanjana. She tells us, “It was being shot with Lisa Ray and Dino Morea. I had gone for the first day of shoot, as Dino was my boyfriend then. It so happened that Lisa couldn’t do the film, and Mukesh (Bhatt, co-producer) requested me to play the role.”

She was just a film old when she said a yes to this horror film. And she says it helped her decide that she wanted to pursue acting, which was never her long-term plan, as she got a pivotal role when other female actors only played love interests. She adds, “The success of Raaz is why I decided acting is the profession I want to be part of, that it is fun. It made me realise I have potential as an actor.”

Titas Chowdhury (HINDUSTAN TIMES; February 1, 2022)

Vikram Bhatt, who directed Raaz, recalls how no one believed in the film. “Everybody thought I was making a mistake. A big producer said to me, ‘Kya yaar, tu flop hero aur Ajnabee (2001) ki vamp ke saath picture bana raha hai’,” Bhatt shares.

He also reveals that the film was first offered to actor Anil Kapoor, who refused to do a horror film, and that actor Lisa Ray had shot for a portion of the film: “We were left in a lurch after she left. When Dino came in, he said, ‘Why don’t you try out my girlfriend, Bipasha? She’s lovely!’”

Talking about how Raaz was a game-changer in his career, Bhatt says, “In every filmmaker’s life, there comes a film which is hard to beat. Raaz is that film for me. It’s a badge of honour.”

It’s better for me to stay single right now and see what life has to throw at me-Dino Morea

Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; November 7, 2021)

Dino Morea took a long break from showbiz as he was unhappy with the kind of work coming his way. However, the actor seems to have rebooted his career with four digital shows. While he waits to make a comeback as an actor in movies, Dino is content with the projects that are being offered to him. Interestingly, like the earlier times, the actor continues to grab attention for his dashing looks. At 45, one of Bollywood’s eligible bachelors shares his thoughts on work, relationships and being in touch with his ex. Read on:

Your last stint in a digital project has put you back on the radar. Are you enjoying this attention? Did you miss being in the limelight?
I was disappointed to have gone off screen in the last few years. I wasn’t getting great offers, and so I had to make a conscious decision of not taking up any of these projects. Today, when people see me perform in web shows, they are like, ‘Wow, we didn’t know you could pull off something like this.’ While in the last seven-eight years I missed being in front of the camera, I took the time to polish my skills as an actor. I knew that I was hungry for good work. So, after doing 15 films as a lead actor, I went to Delhi during my break for a few months to study acting. I wanted to see if I missed out on anything. I enjoyed the process of learning and extended my stay for a couple of months. I also worked on my language and focused on my physical fitness. I keenly observed actors performing in movies. I liked what actors like Irrfan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pankaj Tripathi brought to the table. I enjoy watching Ranveer Singh on screen. I also watched a lot of international content.

Back then, you were only written about as a good-looking hero. Did the fact that nobody was writing about you as an actor bother you?
Well, it’s a visual medium and looking good is a part of the process. Sometimes you might have to take off your shirt and during such times it is important that you are in shape. Back then, people did write more about my visual appeal than my acting chops in movies, but it didn’t bother me as long as I was written about. I was happy to be relevant. I have worked on myself in the past few years as an actor and I am happy that has drawn attention towards me both for my looks and performance.

Today, actors are trained and groomed a lot before they make their debut. You have made a comeback at a time when there is a pool of talent waiting in the wings in this highly competitive industry.
I think it is amazing that people are raising the bar. I agree that in today’s times, you need to be better than the best because if you aren’t, you will be eaten up. People are working a lot on themselves these days. I understood that, which is why I kept working on myself. I know that I am up against many people, and if I don’t make an impact, I won’t win.

On the personal front, you have had a fair share of relationships. Do you see yourself getting married in the near future?
I had some ups and downs in my life with relationships. I enjoyed being in a relationship and also faced a few heartbreaks, which everybody knows about as my life has been an open book. I think right now, it’s better for me to stay the way I am, single, and see what life has to throw at me. But overall, yes, I do love companionship. I definitely would like to settle down at some point. The idea of having someone by your side is special and lovely. I want to be a father, too. I love kids and I know I will be a hands-on father.

Do you think relationships bring a lot of complications with them, which makes it difficult to sustain them in today’s times?
Relationships are simple, we make them complex. If we are honest and true towards our relationship, and if both the individuals are on the same page and true to this bond, then it is the most beautiful thing in the world. The minute you stop wanting too much from a relationship things become simple, and it just works out smoothly, which is why I don’t want to rush into marriage. Marriage is an institution that you would want to look at seriously. And if you are not ready for it, then don’t do it. You should live together and figure out things until you feel you can be great companions for life because, at the end of the day, you don’t want to ruin each other’s life. You should add and complement each other rather than take away from each other. Otherwise, you are better off being single.

You have set an example by being good friends with Bipasha Basu, who you dated a long time ago...
I feel adults are mature enough and everyone moves on. You did share a person’s life at some point. All you can do is wish them well and move forward. You cannot live in the past irrespective of how heart-breaking or tough the situation was. The least one can do is be nice and cordial. If you don’t wish to speak with the other person, don’t do it, but don’t be rude. If you are still carrying that baggage of being upset, then it means that you are living in the past.

Your former girlfriend Nandita Mahtani recently got engaged to Vidyut Jammwal…
All I can say is that I wish her well.

Ranveer Singh pulled off Padmaavat's character with such finesse. The comparison is a compliment-Dino Morea

Dino Morea hopes his menacing act of Shaybani Khan in The Empire will kick off a new phase in his career
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; August 27, 2021)

"Finally, it feels like good days are here,” begins Dino Morea, who considers The Empire a new lease of life that he has been awaiting for a decade. The actor plays Shaybani Khan, the nemesis to Kunal Kapoor’s Babur, in the Disney+ Hotstar offering. Morea, who likens the character to a ferocious panther, says he prepped hard to slip into the part, giving him kohl-lined eyes and a ruthless air. “Shaybani has animalistic traits. He is cunning and agile. When I read the episodes, I knew it was an opportunity of a lifetime. I worked extensively to imbibe the stealthiness of the part. He is a guy whose next move can’t be predicted; I gave him a madness of his own,” he says.

The character’s fierceness has reminded many of Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat (2018). “At least I am compared to the very best. Ranveer pulled off that character with such finesse. The comparison is a compliment,” laughs Morea.

After foraying into films with Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi (1999), the actor was typecast as the chocolate boy and featured in several forgettable movies. He hopes The Empire will be the beginning of a new innings. “There have been far too many disillusioning years where I kept saying no to everything coming my way. The wait can make you insecure. People around would keep saying that out of sight is out of mind in this industry. I could’ve been disillusioned, but I decided to stay afloat.”

In his bid to find content that he believes in, Morea turned producer. His second production Helmet will drop on ZEE5 next week. The actor-producer is flush with optimism as he says, “Tandav and Mentalhood were the warm-up for this big break in The Empire. There is a sense of maturity that has come to my acting. I have worked on myself and am picking my roles with caution. I love the compliments on my looks, but I refuse to just be an eye candy. The constant endeavour is to deliver performances that prove my mettle as an actor.”

I think I am ageing pretty gracefully-Dino Morea

Actor Dino Morea talks of his passion for fitness and shares why it is important to be confident and comfortable in one’s own skin
Akshay Kaushal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 3, 2021)

Actor Dino Morea, turned a year older on December 9 and celebrated his 44th birthday with family. The model-turned-actor is prepping for an upcoming show and is now rocking a whole new salt and pepper bearded look, with long hair, ‘inspired from Robinson Crusoe’.

While he still remains one of the fittest actors in the industry, he believes in accepting his ‘natural self’ and has been flaunting his grey strands on social media, inspiring others to be comfortable in their own skin.

“You got to be confident and comfortable in your skin. After all, everyone has to age and for how long can we look like a 21-year-old. I really take good care of myself and I am fit. Fortunately, I think I am aging gracefully. And I am happy with the way I am,” notes the actor.

Morea often posts videos and pictures of his fitness routine. Ask him about his inseparable connect with the same and the actor says, “Health had been of utmost importance ever since I was a kid. As you get older, you realise that the habit you inculcated as a kid while playing those games, now you use them more for fitness. This has always been number one on my priority list. And I have been fortunate that my parents had always encouraged me to go out and play some form of sports. As kids we were always told to go out and play and not sit at home watching TV. Sports helped my build my immunity right through the pandemic situation.”

The actor feels that this year has been a learning experience for everyone. “The Coronavirus pandemic has given us all a lesson in life that we shouldn’t be taking it for granted. Besides the philosophy of it, I was fortunate to be able to survive the lockdown with my family by my side. It gave me time to introspect about life. To step back from the race of life where everyone is competing to do something every day and outdo others.” he concludes.

I took a conscious decision not to accept stupid films-Dino Morea

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; September 13, 2020)

After debuting on OTT with Mentalhood, this year, where he played the role of a doting dad, Dino Morea took on the role of the antagonist in Hostages 2. “The OTT experience has been outstanding because you instantly reach out to millions of viewers as compared to a movie, though movies have a charm that is unmatched. I don’t differentiate between mediums and I feel if your web show is interesting and people love it, then it reaches out to a wide number of people all over the world. I enjoyed the roles in both projects I was a part of and I am looking forward to the other OTT projects that I am currently working on,” he shares.

With everyone raising the bar and trying to excel on OTT, Morea feels “you can’t be mediocre on OTT.” He adds, “The content on OTT is outstanding. There are so many options and so many platforms out there. I am enjoying being on OTT and the roles coming my way.”

Morea started his acting career with Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi (1999), and followed it with a number of hit films including Raaz (2002) and Aksar (2005), among others. But in the last 10 years, he wasn’t seen much on screen. Talking about the long gaps in his career, he says, “When I came into the industry, I didn’t know anyone. I was modelling and I got one opportunity after another. This industry has given me life and my home. I am extremely grateful to the industry for making me who I am today. My journey has been wonderful even if I have not scaled the heights that I wanted to. I took a step back because of the kind of movies I was getting. I took a conscious decision not to accept stupid films and scripts that were coming my way.”

He admits that he didn’t want to be part of movies that he didn’t believe in. “I felt I was digging my grave by making ridiculous choices. I took a step back and continued to be a part of the movies. I produced a movie, Jism 2 (2012), thereafter I went to Delhi and did an acting course. Now, I am producing another film called Helmet starring Aparshakti Khurana. One hasn’t seen me much as I don’t want to accept just about any movie,” he signs off.

I was dying to be in front of the camera-Dino Morea

Dino Morea
Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; May 20, 2019)

It’s four years since the good-looking Dino Morea has been missing in action on the silver screen. He was last seen in a cameo in the horror film Alone (2015). Now, the Raaz actor is all set to make a comeback with the web series Mentalhood, which also marks his digital debut. The series revolves around parenthood, especially mothers, who are competitive about their children.

Interestingly, Dino will be the only one in the mix as the stay-at-home single parent bringing up two little kids. With his suave and debonair looks, the actor is sure to give the mommies a run for their money. Here, the 43-year-old actor tells us why he had disappeared from the scene and what prompted him to make a comeback.

It’s been quite a while since we saw you on screen. What kept you away?
I took a break. I wasn’t getting anything great to be a part of. But, now the digital space has opened up and given everyone an opportunity to face the camera and do fantastic work. There is some great writing on web. What appealed to me about Mentalhood was the way it’s written —light and interesting. There are six main characters, five mothers besides me. I play a single parent with two children. The writing is so today and funny — about how competitive parents get about their children. Lot of families go through this and any mother or father watching it will relate to the issues. The fact that Ekta Kapoor is producing the series and it will be streamed on Alt Balaji, also appealed to me and I decided to be a part of it. I was dying to be in front of the camera and now I am excited about it.

How challenging was it working with the kids?
I love kids tremendously. When I am with my friends’ children, I become like a father to them and that pretty much comes across in the series. I play a father and mother to five-year-old twins (a boy and a girl). I could put them at ease. Sometimes it is tough to handle them as they get tired and cranky, which gets into the performance. In one of the scenes my daughter had to cry and scream and it was uneasy. At such times, I would tell them stories and make them believe that they are doing something fun. But, you get to learn a lot from the children by just watching their behaviour. It’s amazing.

How did you prep for the role?
Several of my friends are married and have children. I got a lot of information from them and took notes on how they are with their kids, the reactions, how involved they are in the school activities, etc. Sometimes, after reading the script, I would ask my friends, who are single parents, if such a thing really happens and they would say it does exactly like that. You will see me participating in whatever activities other mommies are doing in school!

How was it working with Karisma Kapoor 18 years after Baaz — A Bird In Danger?
She is an absolute professional. We have grown and matured as actors. Karisma has a massive body of work and she is looking lovely in the series. We have a brilliant bunch of actors and we are feeding off each other, which you will see.

What about films, is anything on the anvil?
Obviously, I was looking for good films, but it is only in the last one year that great content is being made in movies also. Whether it’s AndhaDhun, Badhaai Ho or Stree, people are focussing on content right now. The industry has changed tremendously — actors are getting good opportunities and fantastic scripts are being written. It’s a brilliant phase of good cinema. Movies with big stars, which unfortunately do not have great stories aren’t doing well, while films with great content, good writing and small actors are doing Rs 100 crores business. There is a shift in the dynamics of filmmaking. I am in a happy phase. Soon, I will announce my next web series. For some reason there was a misconception that after producing Jism 2, I am not interested in acting. Being a producer doesn’t mean that I have stopped being an actor. But now that people know I am back, I’m getting interesting offers. Everything I have wanted and worked for in the last four years is happening now.

Didn’t you get disheartened at any point?
As actors, we always get disheartened about not getting the right opportunities. And when you see others doing that work, you feel, why not me? But, I was working on myself and keeping myself prepared, so that if I am told you have to shoot next week I am ready. I have an acting coach with whom I have been doing scenes, working on my speech, diction, action, practicing football and keeping myself fit.

What's happening on the personal front, is personal-Dino Morea

Meghna Mukherjee (BOMBAY TIMES; September 12, 2016)

He continues to be one of the most eligible bachelors Tinseltown. Dino Morea, of who is known for his diehard looks and cute smile, still has women vying for his attention. However, the model-turned-actor has now become an entrepreneur and is busy juggling different projects. Excerpts...

You've always had a huge female fan following. However, of late, your fans haven't seen enough of you. What keeps you busy?
Thanks to the various social media platforms, I keep interacting with my fans. However, they haven't seen enough of me, since I haven't really been in a film or a TV show for a while now. But I am working towards changing that. I have set up a few business ventures which are already underway. I am also associated with a few start-ups and simultaneously I'm working on my own project too.

Tell us more about it.
I have my own fitness initiative which I have launched in Mumbai. Hopefully, it will go pan-India soon. Our production house will start creating content for films and digital platforms. And after all this hard work, we throw some of the best parties in town for people to come and enjoy themselves.

Have movies taken a backseat because of your business ventures?
I think there's a huge misconception about me not taking up any acting project for the last three years because of the roles that have been offered to me. Pursuing a business does not mean that I do not want to get back to acting. Let me be loud and clear - films have always been very special to me and will continue to be so.

Tell us a bit about your production house, Clockwork Films.
We have done one movie and a few ad films. I started it in order to create content and learn the ropes of production. I was fortunate that Mahesh Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt had worked on my first production, Jism 2.
Their experience and advice have been invaluable. I am actively reading more scripts for films and also content for web platforms. I hope to announce something soon.

From a producer's point of view, what kind of movies do you usually like to produce? Any specific genre that interests you?
As a producer and an actor, I would like to create films that I would enjoy watching. I pretty much enjoy any genre as long as it engages me for those two hours.

What is happening on the personal front? Do we see you settling down soon?
Well, what's happening on the personal front, is personal! I surely would love to have a family and kids. So, hopefully soon.
