Content creators launch petition to evict Sajid Khan from Bigg Boss 16

As #MeToo accused Sajid Khan joins Bigg Boss 16, content creators launch petition to evict him from the reality show; Sona, Meera and Saloni slam his participation as channel remains tight-lipped
Mohar Basu, Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; October 8, 2022)
In 2018, when the #MeToo wave hit India, it appeared that time was truly up — on sexual harassment and misconduct, and power imbalance. But four years on, we are, unfortunately, a long way from effecting change. The entertainment industry’s moral bankruptcy came sharply into focus last week, as #MeToo accused Sajid Khan was brought on as a contestant on Bigg Boss 16.
Bollywood has habitually rehabilitated many of the accused, be it Anu Malik turning judge for Indian Idol 11 and 12, or director Vikas Bahl whose Goodbye opened in theatres yesterday. Even as the powerbrokers remain silent on the latest move, there is an online petition to evict Khan from the reality show.
On Wednesday, digital content creators Chandana Hiran and Sukriti Chauhan launched a petition on Change.org, demanding Khan’s ouster. Earlier in the week, singer Sona Mohapatra, in a series of tweets, slammed his inclusion on the show, calling Indian TV channels a “depraved and sad lot.”
Hiran tells mid-day, “We have collected over 13,000 signatures. Celebrities like Sona Mohapatra, Meera Chopra, Saloni Chopra and Chinmayi Sripaada have come out publicly and condemned this. But Colors TV is yet to acknowledge our petition. We want them to respond. One understands that they have already shot a few episodes [with Khan], but we want to know their stand on the matter. Are they planning to continue despite protests?”
In 2018, Khan was accused of sexual harassment by several actors and a journalist, among others. He was dropped from Housefull 4, a film that he was then directing, and had stayed away from the limelight until Bigg Boss 16. Hiran is hopeful that the rising voices will make the officials at Colors TV do right by the brave women, instead of chasing TRPs.
“They have been eerily silent. All we want to hear right now is that they condemn sexual harassment, and he should be evicted immediately. They need to take responsibility. We have reached out to the Viacom 18 TV Head [Nina Jaipuria] and Viacom 18 CEO [Jyoti Deshpande].”
After mid-day’s repeated attempts to reach out to Colors TV officials, the channel’s spokesperson declined to comment. A source revealed that Khan had been approached for one of the previous seasons as well. “Sajid was chased down by the show’s casting agents a few times before. It took a lot of to and fro between the legal teams to lock him for this season. He is getting votes, which works for the show’s format.”

Among the most popular shows on TV, Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss goes digital; upcoming season to premiere on Voot as interactive series
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; July 9, 2021)
There has been a seismic shift in the entertainment industry over the past year as OTT platforms emerged as a worthy rival to television and theatres. The reach of digital entertainment is only strengthened further as the biggest reality show in the country goes online. Bigg Boss, which kicked off in 2006 and has been led by Salman Khan since 2010, will have its 15th season premiering on Voot Select.
Since 2008, the reality show has been airing on Colors TV, with the superstar host and the contestants’ headline-grabbing antics making it one of the most watched offerings. This time around, the top brass at Viacom 18 — the parent company of Colors TV and Voot — have decided to cash in on its popularity.
“The company has internally adopted the digital-first approach, so, Bigg Boss will be launched online. The television premiere will take place six weeks after the original airing,” says a source, adding that the move will bring two-fold benefits. “The platform will be able to increase its user base drastically. Secondly, the show will be far more interactive. The junta factor will give the common man the powers to hand-pick the contestants, and have a say in their tasks and exit from the show.”
The 15th season is slated to kick off in August, but the final date has yet to be locked. As is par for the course, rumours about the possible celebrity contestants in the upcoming edition abound.
Confirming its online premiere, Ferzad Palia, head, Voot Select, says, “Bigg Boss has grown to become India’s biggest entertainment property. The launch of Bigg Boss OTT on our platform is another step towards solidifying our ‘Digital First’ approach. We are confident that our subscribers will enjoy our 24-hour live feeds, interactivity and gaming.”

Had Tannishtha Chatterjee told us that she felt insulted, we would have rectified it-Krushna Abhishek

Tannishtha Chatterjee was roasted on Comedy Nights Bachao Taaza and subjected to remarks on her skin colour. Her outrage against the comments has sparked off a debate on this age-old issue once again. Here's what the actress and host Krushna Abhishek had to say about the controversy...
Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; September 30, 2016)
The channel airing Comedy
Nights Bachao Taaza posted an apology on social media and also stated
that they have taken this up with the creative team and the production
house to ensure that the show is produced in line with the channel's
vision. However, host Krushna Abhishek feels the controversy has been
blown out of proportion. “First of all, I would like to apologise to
Tannishtha Chatterjee for whatever happened. She is a woman, I respect
her as an artiste and she was our guest on the show. But it would have
been better if Tannishtha would have watched the show before she agreed
to get roasted,“
he says.
Krushna adds, “Has she ever seen the way I make fun of Bharti (Singh) or
how people take digs at me and my appearance on the show? The format is
such that we are making fun of everyone's appearances. I have called
Bharti a buffalo and she has called me a horse a thousand times. And if
Tannishtha felt that a comment on her skin tone was racist, why didn't
she raise the issue during the performance. She went home and then
decided to post this on her social media account. Had she told us that
she felt insulted or shocked by such comments, we would have rectified
it. That's why I feel the controversy has been blown out of proportion
and she was doing this for publicity. And by 'publicity' I mean she is
doing this to create a controversy and not for the publicity of her
film. When there is no issue why are you creating a controversy? There
are so many artistes who come on our show and they ask us to edit
certain portions and we do that. We could have done that this time too.
Tannishtha was nice to everyone on the show. And I again reiterate that
she should have watched the show before agreeing to be part of it?“
Colors channel apologises to Tannishtha Chatterjee, director Leena Yadav blames self

'Parched' director Leena Yadav owns up for taking Tannishtha Chatterjee to Krushna Abhishek's show 'Comedy Nights Bachao Taaza', where she was allegedly humiliated
Mohar Basu and Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; September 29, 2016)
Speaking to hitlist, Leena said, "Clearly, there was nothing else to talk about other than the colour of her skin. Tannishtha can blame Krushna, and he can say she did it for publicity, but I know she is not speaking up for this one issue; she is against the mentality. It is my fault that I took my actors to a show I have never watched before. If our sensibilities were not in sync with that of the show, we shouldn't have gone."
She mentions the problem also rests with film promotions. "It has a set pattern. On one hand, there is such good content and on the other, all we want to do is to fill spaces. It is a trap within a trap and there is no one person to be blamed. It is not as trivial where one man's word is pitted against the other. There is a larger issue. I am terribly disturbed about this," she says.
In her open letter on Facebook, Tannishtha wrote about facing humiliation on the show for her complexion. As it went viral, the channel posted an apology online: "It is rather unfortunate that what you had expected to be a fun and novel experience turned out to be traumatic for you. It was never our intention, nor a practice for us or the makers of the show to offend anyone at all with the jokes. We have taken this up seriously with the creative team and the production house to ensure that the show is produced in line with the vision of the channel. Please accept our apologies for any hurt that was unwittingly caused."
Krushna, however, is not apologetic. "I am shocked. Tannishtha met me first when she entered the venue. Ours is a popular show and we assumed they have seen it before. They shouldn't have come to the show if they weren't familiar with our format," he says.
The stand-up comic adds that Tannishtha's humour is "classy and British", but his is desi. "Yesterday, she didn't object, why is she talking today? She was not enjoying. Radhika Apte and Leena Yadav were enjoying. The ladies danced with me. Hamare idhar yehi chalta hai. You can't expect pasta on Mohammed Ali Road," Krushna says.

Tannishtha Chatterjee responds to an apology issued by Colors TV in the wake of the backlash that followed her walking out of a comedy show
MUMBAI MIRROR (September 29, 2016)\
After she stormed out of a taping of Comedy Nights Bachao Tazaa when the show’s cast let loose a barrage of distasteful jokes about her skin tone on Tuesday afternoon, actress Tannishtha Chatterjee, in an interview (Mirror, September 28) lashed out at the “white hangover” she was subjected to. She followed it up with a Facebook post detailing her ordeal. And while the channel, Colors, swerved into damage control mode with an apology in the wake of the backlash that ensued, show host Krushna Abhishek maintains that the actress is “going overboard for publicity.”
When Mirror contacted Tannishtha a second time on Wednesday, she chose to respond to the channel with this letter:
“Thanks for your letter but you don’t need to apologise to me. This is not about offending me but about propagating a deeply prejudiced mindset. I wish the show had actually ‘roasted’ me. I think this incident makes way for a much bigger debate -- about what popular culture propagates and the responsibilities that people who are at the forefront of that culture need to shoulder. I am glad that your channel has shows that address social prejudices. I expect the same from your comedies. I expect that the people who create the content and the comedians who work with that content go back to the basics of what satire or ‘vyang’ actually means, raise the bar, and make it funny while keeping social prejudices out of it. Understand the nuances of humour – the literary aspects as well as the period in history when they came into being. Try and find humour on those lines. We all want comedies and we all want to be offended but hurting someone’s sentiments is different from reinforcing social injustices. I’m sure you understand what I’m trying to say. I hope, in the future, it’s not about me but the fact that none of these ideas or line of thoughts should get room to thrive.
This is not personal.
Thank you.”
Anil Kapoor’s 24 to replace Krushna Abhishek’s show Comedy Nights Bachao on Colors?

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; June 13, 2016)
Colors announced the date the second season of Anil Kapoor’s 24 will premiere at the show’s the trailer launch. CEO Raj Nayak said that the show will air July 17 (Sunday) onwards, but refrained from mentioning the time it’d air.
Which begs the question. Which show will 24 replace? There are three possible time-slots, explains a source from the channel. “It can either come in the 8-9 pm slot, the 9-10 pm one or the 10-11 pm slot. The channel will definitely not take a risk with the 11-12 pm slot, because it will then lose out on potential viewers.”
Another khabri reveals that Raj has already finalised the plan with his team. “In all probability, Comedy Nights Bachao will shut down in July.” Why so? The source tells us, “Colors has just launched Kawach in place of Naagin in the 8 pm slot which means that is blocked. The 9-10 pm slot usually has India’s Got Talent and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on weekends which means that prime-time slot too is unavailable. So the only time slot left for 24 is the 10-11 pm slot, which is now occupied by Comedy Nights.”
Comedy Nights Bachao airs on Saturdays whereas Comedy Nights Live comes a day later, on Sundays. Does that mean the start of 24: Season 2 has rung the death knell for Comedy Nights? It might not. “There are still chances that the channel might decide to have only one episode of 24 every week, unlike the bi-weekly system they followed last time.”
There are other reasons too. Adds our little birdie, “CNB has still has maintained decent ratings whereas Comedy Nights Live has never really managed to break even. The hype around CNL (primarily due to Kapil’s exit) helped them open to good ratings, but the negative word-of-mouth killed the show almost instantly. So given a choice, Raj will obviously decide to shut down CNL and retain CNB instead. The channel will take a call on the same in a few weeks’ time.” In all likelihood, it might just be the end of road for the Comedy Nights franchise anyway this July!
Colors TV threatens action against Sunil Grover and Ali Asgar

Sunil Grover admits to receiving a legal notice from Colors preventing him from appearing in a live show in his get-up; his lawyers to respond according to the terms in his contract
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 16, 2016)
Mirror (February 9) had earlier reported that Sunil Grover and Ali Asgar were returning in their Gutthi-Dadi avatars for a live show with Salman Khan, Da-Bang, in Surat on February 19. Now, Mirror has learnt that the channel, Colors, which aired the show, Comedy Nights With Kapil, that the duo were a part of, has sent the actors a legal notice preventing them from appearing in get-up. It clearly states that if Ali dresses up as the grandma and Sunil crossdresses as Gutthi, the channel will register a case of copyright infringement against them.
Sunil, when contacted, confirmed receiving the notice and said that his lawyers are looking into it. "I respect this platform which gave me such a big break and made the character of Gutthi so popular. But it has been clearly mentioned in my contract since the beginning that I can perform at live shows and nobody can stop me from doing that. They (Colors) are well within their rights to send a notice to any actor and my lawyer will reply to it according to the terms in my contract. I have put in a lot of effort towards developing my character on the show and as an artiste it comes as a shock when these things happen."
So, is he still planning to go ahead with the live performance? "Hopefully we will go ahead as planned. I hope the issue is sorted out soon."
Meanwhile, Mirror (January 5) had reported that Kapil will be moving with his show to Sony. Will Gutthi move with him? "We are in talks but nothing is finalised yet. When we will return cannot be confirmed yet," he said shortly.
The channel did not respond to our queries on the subject.
The real reason why Comedy Nights With Kapil was pulled off air

For the first time Colors CEO Raj Nayak speaks about the controversy
Roshni Olivera (BOMBAY TIMES; February 2, 2016)
After a successful two-and-a
half year stint on Colors, Comedy Nights With Kapil came to an end a
few days ago. Clearly, there was a huge fall-out between Kapil Sharma
and the channel. While Kapil has spoken about the issue, Colors
refrained from making any comment so far. But CEO Raj Nayak has now
decided to speak out. Excerpts from the interview...
You refrained from speaking about the issue all this while, what made you change your mind?
Whatever transpired between Kapil Sharma and us was a private matter and I wanted it to be that way. We have a lot of respect and love for him. But our silence was being misinterpreted. Our niceness was being misconstrued as our weakness and since much has been said, I felt is is important to set the record straight once and for all.
What exactly went wrong between Colors and Kapil Sharma?
Kapil Sharma was on television for over 10 years, first on Laughter Challenge and then on Comedy Circus before he did Comedy Nights with us. He is a nice person and is extremely talented. We gave him a platform and co-created Comedy Nights with him. It was the channel's decision to call it Comedy Nights With Kapil (originally the show was to be titled Comedy Nights), as we felt that it would give him a sense of ownership and his loyalty to the show would be 100 per cent. We even helped him set up his production company. The success of the show meant that we had a person who suddenly became a star and found it difficult to manage his success. He started renegotiating and asking for more money which we gave, but the more important and worrying thing was that he violated his contract by hosting shows on competitive channels inspite of having an exclusive contract with Colors for TV, which we felt was not ethical.
What about Kapil's allegations about the channel giving Comedy Nights Bachao more prominence and even diverting celebrities to the show?
Film stars do integrations for movies and want to be on non-fiction shows that rate well. We would encourage stars to appear on both shows. Kapil's insecurity or those of people around him was when the problem began. His managers started panicking when in terms of ratings, Bachao... started doing well and better than Comedy Nights With Kapil in some episodes. And instead of working with our creative team and finding ways to reinvent and make the show ratings better, they kept living in denial and started casting aspersions on the channel. Both the shows were equally important to us. To ensure that both succeed, we kept promoting them with equal weightage. We were clear as a channel that the success of either show need not necessarily be at the cost of the other. For us, they were both mutually exclusive.
Was Comedy Nights Bachao started with the idea of easing out Kapil's show?
Not at all. We didn't do Comedy Nights Bachao by choice. Instead, we requested Kapil not to make his show once a week as it was financially not feasible to us. He said he is busy with movies and doesn't have the time. He did not give us a choice and made his show a weekly and in the process, also doubled his fee. He ensured his personal remuneration didn't suffer, but caused a big financial loss to us. The truth is that we were forced to make CNWK once a week. And since we had built the weekend 10 pm slot as comedy, we had no choice but to bring in another comedy show in the slot vacated by Kapil.
How tough was it to actually let go of Kapil's show, given that it was one of your top shows?
In a normal course, no channel would let go of a good show. But it has to also be economically viable and more importantly, business has to be conducted in an ethical manner. For many reasons, the decision to let go of Kapil has been very tough. It has has been an emotional show for us. Together, Kapil and our creative team created magic. He is extremely talented, probably one of the best in this genre. We never asked him to go. He was not happy with us and implied that we couldn't have another comedy show on the channel. That was unacceptable to us. He chose to walk out. He is a nice guy being misled, I guess, by others around him for their own survival. I am very fond of him and feel really sad to see him go.
Does it worry you that Kapil is going to be on a rival channel?
I am not worried. I feel sad that after all that, we as a channel had done to package him, promote him and treat him like an integral part of the Colors family, he has chosen to move on. Our best wishes are with him in his future endeavours. I am sure he will experience the difference.
There have been fights in the TV industry and the warring parties have even patched up at a later date. Will Colors and Kapil too come together some day?
My team and I love Kapil Sharma the person and the artiste. We have not had any issues with him. He had issues with us. We respect his talent and would be happy to work with him in the future. The only condition being that he has to have a good set of managers and the terms of engagement should be mutually acceptable and respected.
What is your equation with Kapil?
Personally, I have a great equation with him. He wished me on my birthday and I wished him for New Year's. Professionally, we have had our differences. I am answerable to my organisation and I have to act and make decisions in the best interest of the channel.

Colors TV found it convenient to drop Comedy Nights With Kapil's last episode?

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; January 19, 2016)
Kapil Sharma’s sketch comedy show did not get a farewell on Sunday night as slated, as the television channel conveniently decided to skip the telecast of his finale act featuring Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur. A lot of curiosity had surrounded the last episode of Comedy Nights With Kapil, which was shot earlier this month, but on missing its rendezvous with the small screen audience, tongues were set wagging.
Viewers were surprised to find the channel’s other show, Comedy Nights Bachao, which only airs on Saturday, being aired instead. Considering the recent bad blood between the channel and Kapil, many felt it was a deliberate ploy to humiliate the comedian. Channel sources, however, maintain it was a business decision. Strangely, during the telecast of Comedy Nights Bachao, a teaser that Comedy Nights With Kapil will air on Sunday at 10 pm, kept playing. It showed January 24 as the telecast date.
Says a source, “The channel advanced the January 23 episode of Comedy Nights Bachao and ran it on Sunday night itself. It was convenient for them since this weekend, they have the Bigg Boss 9 finale which will go on for a longer duration. So, they could do without Comedy Nights Bachao.” Adds the source, “The channel may make it appear as a programming strategy, but there is obviously more to it. In the past few months, relations between Kapil and the channel have gone from bad to worse. It has become an ego tussle and this could be the channel’s attempt to show him his place. The channel feels he has grown too big for his boots, while Kapil thinks his show was the channel’s main attraction.”
During the recent telecast of a film awards gala on the channel, its head honcho did not mention Comedy Nights With Kapil while mentioning their popular shows, clearly indicating that all was not well between them and the comedian. Asked why they decided to defer the telecast of Comedy Nights With Kapil’s last episode, the channel preferred not to comment.
Interestingly, on Sunday morning, Kapil tweeted, “I hope @ ColorsTV will air the last episode of cnwk with @ akshaykumar tonight since its our way to say a gracious thanks to our audience ( sic).” Perhaps, he saw it coming? Kapil refrains from talking about it and simply says, “It’s time to move on.”
Now, Comedy Nights With Krushna?

That Kapil Sharma has a strong fan base is evident from the fact that a strong hate message is going across to Colors and its CEO Raj Nayak since the last two days on social media. Speculation is rife that Krushna Abhishek will be replacing Kapil on the show Comedy Nights With Kapil and it will be called Comedy Nights With Krushna. Kapil’s fans have been tweeting, “Shame On Raj Nayak. Shame On Colors TV.”
Kapil is bidding adieu to the channel and the last episode of his show will be aired on January 17. The channel had earlier introduced another comedy show Comedy Nights Bachao, which has a bunch of stand-up comedians and actors teaming up for a roast of the celebrities who appear on the show. This didn’t go down well with Kapil who reportedly felt that the channel was promoting the other show and even the same celebrities were going on both, one of the reasons for him wrapping up his show.
Kapil Sharma lost award for KKPK due to his sour relations with Colors TV?

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; December 25, 2015)
Kapil Sharma losing out on his maiden film award is being blamed on his sour relations with a TV channel, which was the telecast partner
If the grapevine is to be believed, Kapil Sharma, who made his Bollywood debut with Kis Kisko Pyar Karoon this year, may have missed bagging an award at a recent film event, thanks to his recent outburst against a television channel. The awards gala is slated to be aired on that particular channel.
Sources say since he and the channel that airs his show, Comedy Nights With Kapil, are no longer on the same page, there might have been an attempt to scuttle his chances. The actor had been nominated in the Best Acting Debut (Male) and Best Actor In A Comic Role. The stand-up comedian has, reportedly, expressed his displeasure over the channel’s decision to promote their other show, Comedy Nights Bachao, hosted by Bharti Singh and Krushna Abhishek. Kapil had apparently alleged that his long-running successful show was being given stepmotherly treatment, forcing him to end the show in mid- January.
Says a source, “Considering Kapil’s popularity, it was likely that he would bag at least one award. But the channel’s involvement as the telecast partner may have ruined his chances. He too feels he was ignored because of being vocal about his displeasure about their attitude towards his show.”
A source close to the channel maintains says, “It was not a TV awards show, but a Bollywood awards night. The organisers call the shots, we only telecast it. Don’t believe people who are trying to seek cheap publicity.” When we contacted Kapil for a comment, he said, “I don’t want to say anything about it.”

The TRPs of Bigg Boss 8 as the numbers went from 2.2 to 1.8 in the second week but the channel bosses are not worried. The weekend programming head of Colors, Manisha Sharma says, “The best is still to come and the creative teams are working round the clock to make sure that the show achieves new milestones with interesting twists and turns, as the show continues to gain momentum with every passing day.”
An source from the TV industry days, “It was not just Bigg Boss whose numbers were affected. It happened with all shows that week. It happens every year during the the Navratri festival.” Despite the fall in TRP, it is Bigg Boss that has taken Colors up the channel to the No 2 position. among other competing Hindi GECs. And a large part of that credit goes to host Salman Khan.
Gaurav Chopra walks out of Eid episode shoot after being made to wait for hours?

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; July 30, 2014)
Last weekend, TV actor Gaurav Chopra was supposed to shoot for a special Eid episode for the channel Colors. He reached the venue on time and was ready to shoot his scenes, but the show’s crew apparently did not shoot with him even after making him wait for hours.
A unit member says, “Gaurav was expecting the crew to call him to shoot his portion, so he kept waiting in his vanity van. But the call never came. Finally, after waiting for a couple of hours, he is said to have left the set in a huff.”
It is being said that the channel is not too pleased with Gaurav’s decision of leaving their show Uttaran and this could be the reason why he was dropped from the special episode at the last moment. “Gaurav has been on the show on and off. His character has been liked by all and the makers even wanted to make some changes in his track. But he decided to go ahead and announce to the media that he was leaving the show. He had not informed anyone from the show and his exit did not go down well with the channel and the production house. So this could be the reason why he was at the receiving end the other day.” Gaurav denied the buzz.
He said, “I was supposed to perform with Akshay Kumar and for some reason, he left early. So they couldn’t squeeze in my act at all. It has nothing to do with me leaving Uttaran. The good part is that the crew apologised to me and I was paid for the act anyway.” The channel was unavailable for comment.
Mahesh Bhatt's unfinished film Girvi made into a serial, Udaan

Mahesh Bhatt’s unfinished film, Girvi, that starred Ajay Devgn and Pooja
Bhatt will now be made into a television serial titled Udaan.
Bhatt says, “This film could not be finished due to some problems. One day, Gurudev Bhalla, one of my assistants on the film, came to me and asked if the story could be made into a serial. I agreed.’’
The show is about
how an unborn girl child from a poor man’s family is pawned to a
zamindar. “In the film, the unborn child grows up to be Ajay Devgn. But
for the show, the gender has been changed — an unborn girl child is
pawned instead. Rest of the premise remains the same.’’
Actress Sai Deodhar, who earlier played the lead in shows such as Saara Aakaash and Ek Ladki Anjaani Si, will headline the cast in this show. In the meantime, Bhatt is also collaborating with Rajan Shahi for a show for another channel. Written by Zama Habib, the story is not a saasbahu saga. It is said to be about an ambitious girl who wants to fulfill her dreams at any cost.

The show, co-written by Robin Bhatt and Javed Siddiqui (who have penned films like Baazigar and Koi Mil Gaya), explores the issue of bonded labour, still being practised in some villages. Says Robin, “It was in 1992 that Mahesh got the concept of doing a film on bonded labour. He had read somewhere about a child being mortgaged when it was in the womb of his mother. Javed and I scripted it. We shot some five-six reels of the film, before it was abandoned by the producer due to financial difficulties. Since then, Mahesh and I have always felt bad about such a fantastic subject being wasted.”
Over a decade later, Gurudev Bhalla, who had once assisted Mahesh, approached Robin and asked if he could make it into a TV show. He asked Robin to script it as he is the original writer. With just one request. That he make it female-oriented. “In the film, a boy is mortgaged, but for the serial we changed it to a girl child. We developed the story and showed it to Mahesh, who liked it immensely,” says Robin. Gurudev then
approached the channel and immediately got a go-ahead.
Udaan will see Sai Deodhar-Anand making a comeback to TV after three years. She plays the mother and Rajiv Kumar her husband.

Is Sidharth Malhotra a better actor than me?-Ajaz Khan

Ajaz Khan is livid that a Comedy Nights With Kapil episode featuring him, hasn’t been aired yet
DNA (July 14, 2014)
Speaking out against the show’s producers, he says, “They invited me as a celebrity guest. I shot what I consider an awesome comedy episode. Honey Singh and Sidharth Malhotra, whose episodes were recorded much after mine, have already been telecast. Is Honey Singh more talented than I am? Is Sidharth Malhotra a better actor than me? I can tell you, my episode, if telecast, would be the most popular ever with TRPs higher than their episodes featuring Honey Singh or Sidharth Malhotra.”
Ajaz says he feels used by the channel. “When I tried to call them to ask what happened, they didn’t take my calls. I am repeatedly called by the channel to boost TRPs. I was the wild card entry in Big Boss 7 and then Khatron Ke Khiladi 5. When TRPs got better, they got rid of me. I was again called in as the wild card entry on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7... I refused. Why should I always be the wild card entry? Jab chaha bulaya jab chaha nikaal diya...”
Repeated attempts to reach Colors for a response to Ajaz’s allegations were stonewalled and snubbed.
Mere ko kisi channel ne nahin banaya-Kapil Sharma

You tweeted about ending your show, Comedy Nights With Kapil, without consulting Colors?
(Sighs) I give my life and blood to the show. Even now as, I haven't slept for the last 36 hours. I'll never give up the show. I just wanted a break because I was exhausted.
The channel was taken aback by your tweet. What made you take that shocking decision?
Every show has it own profile and destiny. I did the Laughter Challenge, then Comedy Circus. They had their own unique format. The format on my Comedy Nights With Kapil required me to put together 26 episodes around the adventures of 6 family members. The 26 episodes stretched into 50 and then into a 100
episodes. I felt we needed to reinvent ourselves.
Why change something that is so successful?
It's not about the TRPs only. It's also about that creative satisfaction that every artiste craves for. Just being successful cannot be enough.
Did you quit because you felt the Channel was taking you for granted?
(Falls silent) I wouldn't like to comment about what goes on internally. This show means the world to me. I've been given up obscene amounts of money for other work to concentrate on this show…. Do you know, I gave up 6 film offers because I had no time for them Before I said yes to Yash Raj's Bank Chor I turned down some really good film offers including one by Sunil Manchanda, the producers of Tere Naam. I really loved the story. I also said no Farhan Akhtar's offer. I felt really awful saying no to that one. Sajid Khan also wants to sign me. The Yash Raj film I signed was supposed to go on the floors in March 2014. Now it's June. I am still not able to give them my dates. Actors crave to be in Yash Raj films. And here I am, delaying the shooting. I don't want them to think I am arrogant. But I consider Comedy Nights to be bigger than any film. The biggest of stars come on my show. Now I wonder when I do my first feature film I can't go on Comedy Nights With Kapil to promote. Where will I go?
Farhan Akhtar's film was a loss,?
I didn't see it that way. When Farhan made that offer I had just started doing Comedy Nights. I wanted to show to the world that I could run a successful show for a year. For me at that point of time getting the show on the right track was more important than anything in the world. For one whole year I've worked like a mad man. I don't even have time to meet my mother. For me no one is more important than my mother. Mere ko kisi channel ne nahin banaya hai. Mere ko meri Maa aur mere muqaddar ne banaya hai. Whatever I do, I do it for her. Ek saal se main show ke liye apni neend, chayan sab kuch kho rahaa hoon. I felt I needed a break.
The channel wants to build Comedy Nights as the Seinfeld of India and they have persuaded you to change your mind?
I don't know what Seinfeld, if they feel that way they should treat the show that way. The comedy shows in the West come in seasons. Let Comedy Nights also be seasonal. They should give me breaks. But breaks toh dur ki baat, they won't let me make the show weekly instead of by-weekly.
But the Channel can't afford to let you go because the ratings higher than all their other popular shows?
I know people wait for my show every week. I don't want to sound boastful but when I left Comedy Circus it lost its popularity. Comedy Nights and every member of my Comedy family have become popular. I want the show to grow. For this I need a break of a month at least. Main creative aadmi hoon. I have grown from regional to national channels. Today by God's grace my show is watched all over the world. But we can't spread ourself thinly. You can't apportion daal meant for 3 people to 9 people. True, no show in the history of Indian television has remained no.1 uninterrupted for a 100 episodes. But I don't want to compromise on quality.
Is it true that you were upset when the show was aired very late because of Fear Factor and Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa?
The Kumar Sanu episode came on at 11.15 pm. People in smaller towns go at sleep at 10 pm. They stay awake for my show. I don't want my audience to suffer. When my audience is hurt I am hurt. Fans of Comedy Nights are like God to me. I can't have them insulted. During the IPL matches Comedy Nights was the only show to have got the TRPs.
Is this one of the reasons you had decided to leave?
I did 300 episodes of Comedy Circus. I am not the kind to abandon a show. Let me tell you, the offers that are coming my way are extremely tempting. I've no complaints against Colors. They've been wonderful to me.
Akshay Kumar sleeps at 9pm, so he's not my 3 am friend-Ashvini Yardi

From working as an assistant director at Zee TV to changing the fortunes of a start-up called Colors and then turning movie producer, Ashvini Yardi loves taking risks. With a calm demeanour and a steely resolve, the co-founder of Grazing Goat Pictures likes to consistently tread new grounds. In a tête-à-tête with Deepali Dhingra , the enterprising stunner talks about being camera conscious, why she loves watching movies with her son and how she is no longer hooked on to television
Deepali Dhingra (MID-DAY; May 11, 2014)
When Ashvini Yardi decided to call it a day at Colors channel and move on to the big screen, everyone had their doubts. After all, the Programming Head had helped the channel climb up the popularity charts within a few years of its launch. But rather than staying on and basking in the glory, she decided to shift gears and try her hand at something completely different — producing movies. “The whole world told me not to do it, including my family,” recalls Yardi, as we sit in her comfortable seafacing office in Juhu. “My husband Sachin told me that I had worked so hard for the channel’s success and now, I was ready to give it away on a platter to someone else. Colors was so successful, people actually came from Atlanta to do a PhD on me!” she laughs. “But then, that’s who I am. If I don’t feel there is a challenge anymore, I can’t go on,” adds Yardi.
After a 20-year-long career in television — fresh after post graduation she had joined Zee TV as an assistant director and after 15 years, moved on to Colors — Yardi formed Grazing Goat Pictures with actor Akshay Kumar in December 2011. “It’s not that I planned to get into films after television. But somebody suggested the idea and I thought, why not,” she says. And while their first production OMG — Oh My God won critical acclaim as well as commercial success, it ensured something else too. “Earlier, I was a lunatic when it came to television. I would even go and check if the promo, which I had scheduled, was on air or not. But after I left Colors, I just switched off. It’s amazing how I detached myself from the channel. After all, it was my baby,” adds the producer.
It’s her other baby, her 10- year-old son Vivaan, who now decides what they should watch on the small screen. “My TV choices are completely influenced by him. I watch whatever he watches, which includes a lot of American teenage stuff. He’s growing up and is quite witty with his comments,” says the
hands-on-mom. And what about movies? “We have a barter system. I watched Rio 2 with him and he was supposed to watch Queen with me. But that hasn’t happened till now,” she smiles.
A typical day off from work means lazing in her Bandra home, with her son and her dog Rocko. “I cook once in a while. I don’t mind cooking more often but I’m sure my family would,” she says, taking a dig at herself. For somebody who’s got one of the fittest actors around as a business partner, Yardi doesn’t believe in working out. “Akshay threatened to install fitness equipment in our office. But he must have realised that I would just end up hanging my bags on them,” she guffaws.
Yardi might not believe in a fitness mantra, but the 40-something entrepreneur (she refuses to divulge her year of birth) is easily one of the few women behind the camera, who looks lovely in front of it as well. She admits that despite getting acting offers, she prefers to stay away from the limelight. “I’m very camera conscious. Even on the red carpet, when photographers ask me to pose, I freeze,” says the movie-buff, who has been the brain behind some of the biggest shows on TV including Balika Vadhu and Khatron Ke Khiladi. In fact, it was on the sets of the reality show that she met Akshay and the duo hit it off. “Apart from being so hard-working, he’s really humble,” she says. So is he her 3 am friend? “Akshay sleeps at 9 pm, so no,” she says cheekily, but adds, “My family is my biggest support, so I don’t need to wake up anyone else.”

No takers yet for Salman Khan’s TV show Paanch Ka Punch?

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; February 5, 2014)
While promoting his latest film Jai Ho, Salman Khan had revealed his plans to do a new reality show that would talk about social causes. At that time, he didn’t say much except that it wouldn’t be similar to Aamir Khan’s show Satyamev Jayate. Buzz has it that Colors — that airs Bigg Boss and had initially approached Salman to add the new show to their programming — is now no longer keen to air it.
A source says, “The tentative title of the show is Paanch Ka Punch and it is a fun show that promises a lot of entertainment along with a strong social message.
Having liked the concept, Salman has already given it his nod. Accordingly, Siddharth Basu’s production house first approached the said channel.
But they have now turned it down as they felt that Salman hosting another show on their channel would amount to an overdose for their audiences.” The source adds that this will be a limited-episode show and that the actor has verbally agreed to allot bulk dates to the production house. “Salman is keen to do this show and the production house is in talks with other channels for this show. They have now approached rival entertainment channel Zee TV,” says the source. When contacted, official spokesperson for Colors said, “We don’t communicate on speculative articles. We aren’t aware of any such thing.”
Anita Basu, Siddharth Basu’s wife and a director with the production house, remained unavailable for comment.
