I am doing an Indian film this year. And we should be announcing it pretty soon-Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra announces her desi move in a chat with mid-day, along with her Heads Of State co-star, John Cena, who she’d love to watch in a Hindi film too
Mayank Shekhar (MID-DAY; July 10, 2025)

The Amazon Prime Video flagship film, Heads Of State, opens with Priyanka Chopra Jonas slithering through a truck during crackerjack stunt sequences, at the La Tomatina festival, in Buñol, Spain.

Now, where do Indians know this annual August gathering that involves pelting tomatoes from?

Chiefly, Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011). Which was the movie Zoya made before Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), starring Priyanka in it.

Zoya and her brother Farhan Akhtar were set to do another film (Jee Le Zaraa) with Priyanka, that’s yet to take off. Many Indians, on the other hand, would’ve watched Heads Of State, because of Priyanka.

Only natural then to ask when do we see her back on the Indian screen? It’s been a while.

Priyanka says, “I am doing an Indian film this year. And we should be announcing it pretty soon!” To which her Heads Of State co-star John Cena instantly butts in, “Well, didn’t you just announce it [now]?”

Priyanka laughs, “Well. I just said I am doing an Indian movie. The rest you can speculate, but I’m excited about it.”

This banter closes the quick chat with mid-day between crossover star, Priyanka, and the American actor, professional wrestler, John, before the London première of Ilya Naishuller’s Heads Of State.

Wherein John plays the US President, who used to be an action star. That’s apt casting, alright. And you wonder if there are shades in that performance that remind you of other action stars, say Arnold Schwarzenegger, who became a top politician himself.

John is emphatic, “No. I try not to imitate. If any correlation shows, it’s by chance. The job title is enough. When you say, ‘President of the United States’, those words have global reach, and people have something in mind [to do with them, anyway].

“The takeaway is: It’s an important job. And the movie is [about this] ‘important job’ put in a situation they don’t understand. The script reads: he’s empathetic, positive, arrogant, stuffy, stubborn… You can take all of this, and form your own ideas [about the role].”

John is paired opposite Idris Elba as the UK Prime Minister for the US Prez’s frenemy in Heads Of State. Both of whom get locked into a fun verbal duel inside the American presidential plane, Air Force One, that gets attacked.

These are top heads of states somehow looking to politically save the world. Guess who’s there to save them in person? Priyanka, as an MI6 agent.

For a film with two male hunks for heroes, it’s instructive that the best action set-pieces are reserved for the female lead. Also, Priyanka’s been global-mainstream for long enough that her character needs no South Asian roots, or any other kinda ethnic explanation.

Unlike, say, her debut in the US as Alex Parrish — in the ABC TV show Quantico (2015-18) — who was of Indian descent. It’s been a decade since. In Heads Of State, Priyanka plays Noelle Bisset. Period.

Which is obviously the rarest of such seamless East-West mainstream transitions. We wonder how it’s to deal with the press from both parts of the world.

Priyanka says, “It’s very different. In India, the interviews are cheekier, fun, little snazzy; versus the western press, which doesn’t do that a lot, unless it’s entertainment media. The second difference is the familiarity with my work. Which the western media doesn’t have that much of. As against [the fact that] we’ve known each other’s history for 20 years!”

That’s basically the press that can tell John Abraham from John Cena. In fact, Priyanka says the latter John would kill it in desi movies too: “Are you kidding me? He’d be amazing!”

John jokes, “I’ve been seriously trying!” Both John and Priyanka have no dearth of fans in either hemisphere. “No one’s casting John. Please cast John in a Hindi movie, I’d love that,” Priyanka laughs.

The last we met Priyanka was when she’d emerged from a shower. This was during the shoot of the second season of the Prime Video spy-series, Citadel, which hasn’t dropped yet.

But her backbreaking action on that show is only topped by the topsy-turvy moves in Heads Of State. If you’re a stunt fan, consider her stairwell sequence in the film’s finale.

Takes a toll? Priyanka argues, it’s the “trust with the [stunt] team you’re working with” that’s of essence here: “My stunt-double Anisha Tee Gibbs, who works closely with me, was the same on Citadel and Heads Of State. I did actually three back-to-back [projects] with her.

“Because it’s easier. We have our own short-hand. She’ll do all the rehearsals, and the runs before. And then show me exactly what I’m supposed to do. That’s crucial for the physicality of it.”

The rest, one supposes, is timing, and chemistry. Priyanka also plays the former love-interest of the UK PM, as in Idris Elba, in Heads Of State.

Idris’s character being the thoroughly sober, statesman-like. Which is in sharp contrast to John’s gregarious part, given to losing his lid every once in a while. John and Idris have earlier starred together in the super-hero film, The Suicide Squad (2021).

Once you meet John though, you realize, his actual self is in even sharper contrast to the role he plays in Heads Of State. He’s supremely Zen, when he talks. For a man used to being in the middle of the ring, you’ve to strain your ears to hear him well. He’s polite beyond measure.

He’s also unwittingly offered me the social-media dopamine once, I tell John. This is when I woke up, long ago, to find that he’s following me on X, formerly known as Twitter. I went over to his account, and realized, he follows over 1 million people on X!

How does one even follow over a million people on X? John remarks, “That’s only because they cut me off at following a thousand a day!” Incredible. And what does that say about him?

He reveals, “In a world where we are so braggadocious about followers, my concept with X is to be inclusive. And I’m very braggadocious about those I follow. My goal is to have an open conversation with people from all walks of life.I know there’s a lot of negativity, and impressionable groups out there. I don’t wanna ignore them.”

Spoken truly like a head of state — that we all wish to have, or wish we had!

Citadel universe to come to an end after season 2 of Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden starrer

Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden's Citadel to discontinue after season 2?

After Amazon calls off Citadel: Honey Bunny 2, sources say the ambitious US mothership series to be discontinued after its second season; Mexican spin-off axed
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 18, 2025)

The murmurs were there for weeks, and on April 16, it became official. On Wednesday, Amazon announced that Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana, the Indian and Italian offshoots respectively of Citadel, each one season old, were being discontinued. The OTT giant also announced that the second season of the US mothership series, led by Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden, would arrive in 2026.

But mid-day has now learnt that the second season may mark the end of the road for the entire Citadel universe, as Amazon has apparently pulled the plug on its Mexico, Spain and Japan spin-offs. It is also heard that Chopra only has a two-season contract for the US version.

Citadel was conceived as a multi-country franchise with the Russo Brothers at the helm of the mothership series, and was viewed as one of Amazon’s most ambitious projects.

A source reveals, “The idea was that after the first season of Citadel US, the Italy, Indian and Mexican versions would be released. The US series’ second season was to arrive in between these versions if the story allowed it, otherwise it would come as an ender after the release of Spain and Japan’s spin-offs. But now, the Mexican version is off the table. The fate of Japan and Spain’s offshoots also seems uncertain.”

In its recent statement, Amazon highlighted that the storylines from the Indian and Italian offshoots will be woven into the US spy thriller’s second season. “Having successfully traversed India and Italy, storylines from both Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series Citadel. While these successful international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet,” read the statement issued by Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios.

The Amazon spokesperson did not elaborate further in response to mid-day’s questions. Insiders, however, told us that the initial idea was to also include characters from the Mexican series.

Another source noted that the Indian series, starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, wasn’t exactly cancelled. “There weren’t any plans for season two. If at all, it would’ve happened only after the rest of the spin-offs as well as the US version had released.”

Samantha Ruth Prabhu plans to resume acting next year

Samantha plans to resume acting next year
Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 16, 2023)

Back in July, Samantha Ruth Prabhu took a step back from acting to travel and focus on her health, as she underwent treatment for an autoimmune condition, Myositis, in the US. However, we’ve learnt the actor plans to resume working next year.

A source tells us, “She’s feeling better; rejuvenated would be the right word to explain her state of mind and health. The time off and travel opened her to different things. She’s planning to channel all her energy into her work.”

The source adds, “She is planning to start acting and be back on set early next year. It’s expected that she will be back once promotions for Citadel start. She may also start working on a new project that she is backing.”

Prabhu recently announced that she will turn producer. The source adds, “She plans to back off-beat content, produce for OTT, have joint ventures, and support talent. She is positive her name will bring some worth to a project she picks.”

The idea of Tiger 3 is to give hope and spread positivity-Simran

Simran: It’s all about spreading positivity and hope

Defending Salman Khan-starrer Tiger 3’s storyline, south star Simran discusses the messaging behind the actioner
Hiren Kotwani (MID-DAY; November 19, 2023)

While the Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif-starrer Tiger 3 is a fitting action-packed instalment of the long-running spy franchise, the film opened to mixed reviews from both critics and the audience. While the action has been lauded, the story, not so much. It didn’t sit well with many that Pakistan has been showcased as a peace-loving country. When questioned, Simran, who plays the role of Nasreen Irani, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, counters, saying that the idea of the film is to “give hope and spread positivity”.

“Humanity comes first, even before the boundaries that we have drawn and made different countries. When women and children are killed [in the name of war], humanity dies. [In the film], Tiger goes on to save another country’s PM, at the cost of his family and his life. I think we all have a Tiger within us somewhere. If we want to give people some hope, we have to fight to save humanity. Then the boundaries don’t matter.”

The actor, who was last seen in the R Madhavan-starrer Rocketry: The Nambi Effect and Manoj Bajpayee’s Gulmohar, is thrilled to be part of the Yash Raj Films franchise. “The role came with a huge responsibility. A lot of research and prep went into it before we began shooting. Even if there is just a paragraph of dialogue, it can’t be uttered randomly. It has to be imbibed, understood, and conveyed with authenticity,” says the actor, adding that she was honoured to play such an important part in the film.

Tiger 3 completes a hattrick for her in Hindi cinema. Next up, Simran has Shonali Bose’s Notorious Girls with Revathy and Nandita Das. She has also wrapped up the shoot for director duo Raj-DK’s Citadel with Varun Dhawan and Samantha. While the Hindi projects are yet to hit the screen, Simran is looking forward to seeing people’s reactions to her action scenes in Dhruva Natchathiram with Vikram, which releases on November 24. Unlike Tiger 3, in the Tamil film, Simran plays “an agent working for a cause”.

Having worked with the Ponniyin Selvan star in last year’s Mahaan, she says, “Vikram is a versatile actor. He undergoes drastic transformations for his characters and gives it his all. It is always great working with a determined actor like him.”

In Citadel, audience will see new side to Raj and DK's creativity-Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan: Audience will see new side to their creativity

Teaming up with Raj-DK for the first time, Varun Dhawan on how the director duo’s Citadel is distinct from its US counterpart
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; October 8, 2023)

It was a pleasant surprise to catch a glimpse of Varun Dhawan in Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s Citadel, created by the Russo Brothers. While the US version opened to mixed reviews earlier this year, closer home, there is much anticipation around the Indian version of Citadel that has been helmed by Raj-DK (Raj Nidimoru, Krishna DK).

“Ours will be a completely different [story] since it is Raj-DK’s independent vision,” begins Dhawan, as we catch up with him at a Booking.com event that saw him playing cricket with Zaheer Khan.

With the spy thriller, the actor will make his OTT series debut. He couldn’t have asked for a better debut vehicle—the Amazon Prime Video offering not only has international resonance, but also marks his first collaboration with Raj-DK, who have cracked the long-format storytelling with The Family Man, Farzi and Guns & Gulaabs. An admirer of the director-duo’s previous work, Dhawan claims that viewers will see a new facet of their creativity.

“Raj and DK have been a joy to work with. They are legends in the streaming field, and as directors, are wonderful to team up with. The audience will see a new side to them.”

Teaming up with Samantha, whom he describes as a “supportive co-star”, made the experience more fulfilling. “There was a lot of give-and-take between us. We broke the ice at the first meeting, and when you act, you form a new rhythm. I try not to work with people if they are not professional.”

On the films front, Dhawan’s Bawaal received mixed reviews, but he is not perturbed. “Everyone is allowed to have their opinion. Bawaal did phenomenally well on the platform, it was topping the [platform’s viewership] charts every week. That is not something we were [orchestrating], people were watching it. After that, there were discussions—some were in favour of it, some were against it. That is true of every film. But the film got everyone interested. It started a conversation. A lot of people have loved the film, and as actors, we seek validation. I thought I got enough validation.”

Sikandar Kher doesn’t support censorship on OTT

Sikandar Kher doesn’t support censorship on OTT
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 12, 2023)

The brouhaha over censorship of web content and crackdown on intimacy on screen and strong language has left actor Sikandar Kher perplexed. The Aarya (2020) actor says, “I don’t think there should be any censorship. There can be ratings, like how they have it abroad — PG-13, 17 and so on. At the end of the day, you are an adult and should be able to make your own decisions around what you want to watch.”

But what of the contention that swearing and sex scenes might sometimes just be bunged in by makers to draw eyeballs? The 41-year-old responds, “When you watch something, you get to know whether people are giving gaalis for the sake of it or showing stuff just like that.” He adds that viewers wouldn’t watch a project if a certain element doesn’t contribute to its quality: “If it is all over the place, it wouldn’t manage to attract people.”

The Tooth Pari: When Love Bites actor is happy with the way one good project is leading to the other in the web space. Kher, who will star in the Indian version of Citadel, says, “I am dubbing for it. We have almost wrapped it up. Raj (Nidimoru, one half of the filmmaker duo Raj & DK) saw Monica O My Darling (2022) and called me to his office the next day to offer this role.”

Shocker: Samantha Ruth Prabhu quits acting for some time; stops signing new projects

Shocker: Samantha quits acting for some time; stops signing new projects
She will head to the US for myositis treatment
Sridevi S (BOMBAY TIMES; July 6, 2023)

Samantha Ruth Prabhu has decided to take a six-month break from films to focus on her health. The actress has been battling myositis, an autoimmune disease, which can cause intense muscle pain and inflammation.

Squashing rumours that implied she had returned advance payments to film producers to take this break, a source close to her informs us, “Samantha is currently shooting for a film with Vijay Deverakonda and has another four days of shoot left. She has also nearly finished work on her web series that also stars Varun Dhawan. However, health is a priority now. She has been advised to rest well and avoid stress by her doctors, and is heading to the US for further treatment. She is just ensuring that she finishes all her film commitments before heading to the US, there has been no return of advance payments because she has not signed anything new. She will be back in six months or sooner. It all depends on how she feels after treatment.”

Sugandha Rawal (HINDUSTAN TIMES; July 6, 2023)

After wrapping up Indian version of Citadel, actor Samantha is going to take a step back from acting for at least a year. She will focus on her health and undergo treatment for myositis in the US during this period.

“A few months back, Samantha decided that she would take a break from acting and was just waiting to wrap up her projects — Kushi and Citadel (alongside actors Vijay Deverakonda and Varun Dhawan, respectively). She is not signing any projects currently,” says a source close to the actor, calling reports of her returning money to producers for the projects she had signed, “assumption and exaggeration”.

In October 2022, the 36-year-old revealed her myositis diagnosis and took a six-month break. “She was in the middle of shooting for Kushi when she fell ill. Now, she must go for the main treatment and therapy,” shares the source.

Citadel: Varun Dhawan, Sikandar Kher begin three-week training programme with stunt coordinators from Hong Kon

Break or brave it at boot camp for Varun Dhawan, Sikandar Kher

For the Indian Citadel’s action scenes, Varun and Sikandar begin three-week training programme with stunt coordinators from Hong Kong, LA; to learn combat, weapon use
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; June 6, 2023)

The team of the Indian version of Citadel may be two schedules down since taking the series on floors in January, but director duo Raj-DK are now looking at its most critical leg. Come July, Varun Dhawan, Samantha and Sikandar Kher will begin the third stint, which includes filming the action sequences. But one has got to prep hard before having a face-off with the baddies.

Actors Dhawan and Kher are undergoing a three-week rigorous training programme with stunt coordinators from Hong Kong and Los Angeles, which will make them action-ready.

With a focus on hand-to-hand combat, weapon training, and overall physical fitness, the camp aims to equip the actors with the skills necessary to bring the action sequences to life. The boot camp was kicked off in Andheri last week.

A source reveals, “A team of four stunt coordinators is teaching Varun and Sikandar the execution of intricate action set-pieces, including bike stunts. They will also undergo ammunition training to familiarize themselves with different firearms, their safe handling and techniques. The spy thriller will have elaborate fight sequences, and Raj-DK felt the actors should be thoroughly trained beforehand, leaving no room for last-minute changes or errors during filming. First-aid experts and action analysts are also present. They closely monitor the sessions, assess potential hazards, and implement safety measures to create a foolproof environment during the imminent shoot.”

To ensure homogeneity in terms of the look, the Indian team has exchanged notes with action director James Young, who worked on the US version of Citadel, featuring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Amazon Prime Video and the producers have apparently issued a strict no-phone policy at the training site. The source adds, “This has been put into place to ensure that all participants remain fully committed to their training. The boot camp goes on for almost eight hours a day.”

Leading lady Samantha, however, is not a part of the sessions since she is tied up with the promotions for Kushi. We hear her training has different specifications, and will be done at a later stage.

I felt such a sense of respect and shock that there wasn’t a scene in Citadel where I was a damsel in distress-Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra Jonas: It was nice to be the hero this time

From doing action to being on a par with Madden in Citadel, Priyanka happy to note that makers pulled no punches when developing role of female lead
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 30, 2023)

Priyanka Chopra Jonas can do everything a hero does, and better. It is, however, the lack of opportunities that separates her, and possibly other talented leading ladies, from the heroes. In a 20-year career, Chopra had to often fit into the heroine stereotype, present in the narrative to service the hero’s arc. So, when Citadel came her way as that long-awaited opportunity to break the glass ceiling, she grabbed it with both hands.

“There are way less opportunities for women [to be] leading ladies who take responsibility of the situations and don’t need rescuing. Have you seen how many times I have rescued Richard [Madden’s character] in the show? That’s the point,” she asserts.

The actor is proud that a project finally puts her on par with the leading man. “Jen [Jennifer Salke, Head, Amazon Studios] and the Russo Brothers [executive producers] were clear that no excuses will be made for my character just because she is female. They said my character will do more because she is a woman.”

In the Amazon Prime Video action thriller, Chopra and Madden play spy agency Citadel’s members, whose memories have been erased. Chopra counts herself lucky to have bagged the project, pointing out that only a few directors have the vision and confidence to imagine women as action heroes.

“I felt such a sense of respect and shock that there wasn’t a scene where I was a damsel in distress. I have propped many heroes up to win. It was nice to be the hero this time,” she smiles.

Citadel is one of the streaming giant’s biggest series to be rolled out, with local shows under the same name being integrated from different countries. In India, director duo Raj-DK have been entrusted to develop it with Varun Dhawan and Samantha. Does the series’ enormity overwhelm her? Chopra promptly replies in the negative.

“I’ve never done something as big as Citadel, but I have done big movies in India. So, that doesn’t scare or intimidate me. But what was intimidating was being able to be convincing enough that I belonged in this world. With every new project, I go in feeling, ‘How can I make my character more convincing?’”

Priyanka Chopra and I prod, poke and bring out the best in each other-Richard Madden

Richard Madden: We prod, poke and bring out the best in each other

Fronting marquee series Citadel with Priyanka, Game Of Thrones star Richard Madden praises Bollywood star for pushing him as an artiste
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 26, 2023)

I had no idea that I have fans here,” exclaims a surprised Richard Madden, when we tell him that his character Robb Stark enjoys wide popularity in India. The actor shot to global fame in 2011 for his portrayal of the righteous ‘King of the North’ in Game Of Thrones.

“We shot Game Of Thrones mostly in Ireland, knee-deep in mud. To think that lots of people in India loved it is mind-blowing,” he beams.

Now, the path-breaking fantasy drama is behind him, and Madden is on to what might well be the next path-breaking spy thriller — Amazon Prime Video’s marquee series, Citadel. On his maiden trip to India, the actor is equally surprised by the excitement that the Russo Brothers’ production has generated among desi audiences. “Now that I am here, I am blown away by how big this show is. I have lived with it for five years,” he says.

The action thriller sees Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as spy agency Citadel’s members, whose memories have been erased. For the Scottish actor, the idea of playing two extreme personalities was tempting.

“It was the character’s duality [that drew me]. While the story is from the lens of my character, Kyle, he is also a spy. It was interesting to be at two different ends of the story. I was fascinated by what characteristics are built into you from birth, and what behavioural traits are [imbibed] from your life experiences. This was an opportunity to explore that.”

The icing on the cake was his co-actor, a bona fide Bollywood star. “Everyone is aware of Priyanka’s stardom. You have to live under a rock to not know about it,” he gushes, before revealing that they first met at a party eight years ago.

“We were seated beside each other at the dinner, in a room of 400 people. We instantly hit it off, and had so much fun that night. Then we saw each other again at different parties. When we learnt [Citadel] is going to happen, it was excellent. She is fun, the kindest and loveliest human.”

His admiration for Chopra only grew during the shoot, on seeing her involvement as an artiste. “What struck me the most about her was how much she cares. She wanted to mine these characters with [me]. We prod, poke and bring out the best in each other. Also, she listens [keenly] — you can say anything, and you’ll get a reaction that is not rehearsed. We surprise each other constantly, and that makes way for the script to evolve.”

People try to find a mistake in anything I do. I think people enjoy that a little bit-Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra Jonas: People try to find a mistake in anything I do

Priyanka Chopra talks pressures of global stardom and making peace with the past, as she looks towards the future with Citadel
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; April 19, 2023)

A bird that has broken the cage of the past, and now carries only future ambitions on her wings — that is how Priyanka Chopra Jonas views herself. And might we add, the future does look promising. The actor is less than 10 days away from the release of Citadel, Amazon Prime Video’s marquee series fronted by Richard Madden and her, and backed by the Russo Brothers. But it hasn’t been an easy ride from Bareilly to Bollywood and finally, to the big stage of Hollywood.

Chopra might remember every detail of what she has been through in her 20-year movie career, but the superstar has neither the time nor the inclination to ruminate on them. “I don’t live in the past. I like making my peace, and living in peace. The more we live in the past and think about what happened then and who did [what] to me, the [more we] don’t have time to make space for the future,” begins the actor.

Her Bollywood journey recently became a subject of much discussion. On an international podcast last month, Chopra mentioned that she was “cornered” in the Hindi film industry years ago, and her “beef” with people led to loss of opportunities. She alluded that at the time, her Hollywood career was born out of a survival instinct.

Her determination to lead life on her own terms and chase her dreams have become an integral part of her personality. Mention this to her, and she attributes it to a life lesson that her late father, Ashok Chopra, had imparted to her early on.

“A lot of what I do is deliberate. I don’t carry baggage, because then you can’t fly. I want to be a bird, and explore this incredible life. I am so blessed to have these opportunities, my family, the friends and people I work with, and the ability to do my job well. I am blessed that my brain works in a certain way, and that my parents raised me with values. So, I focus on wanting to fly because when I was young, my dad told me, ‘I will never keep you in a cage. You will fly as high as you want.’ I want to make him proud.”

But here’s the thing about soaring high — success and fame bring with them pressure and perils. As one of Indian cinema’s most successful exports to Hollywood, Chopra is representing not only her own abilities, but also India’s potential to the West. Does carrying the country’s expectations feel heavy on her slender shoulders, at times?

“This has become larger than me. It’s not just about me as an individual now; they see me as something bigger than the woman I am. I do believe there is a lot more scrutiny, maybe because I am one of the very few people in Hollywood who have come from India.”

Only a few weeks ago she was slammed by Indian fans for erroneously calling RRR a Tamil film — one of the many instances of the scrutiny on her. “People try to find a mistake in anything I do. I think people enjoy that a little bit. I was a lot more free-spirited, but now, I am a bit more cautious because I have my family to think about. The higher you go in life, the more people look for a reason for you to fall. But at the same time, I have so much love and support from my family, friends and fans. I prefer to focus on that.”

A still from Citadel

The world is of Russo Brothers', story is ours-Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK

Hand-picked to helm the Indian version of global series Citadel, directors Raj-DK explain how they are crafting a desi narrative within the framework given by Russo Brothers
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; February 3, 2020)

Russo BrothersTheir unbridled enthusiasm was evident as Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, flaunting the Avengers Infinity gauntlet, announced arguably their biggest project — the director duo had been chosen to develop the Indian version of Citadel, produced by Joe and Anthony Russo of Avengers fame. Two weeks after the announcement, we catch up with them in their new office where, they are proud to note, a new project is developing in every room. "Since we are consuming content from across the world with subtitles, there's intrigue about [Indian] stories too," shares Raj.

It was assumed that Raj-DK, as they are better known, bagged the Amazon Prime series because of their much-loved offering, The Family Man. However, DK clarifies that they were in talks much earlier. "The Family Man was on the edit table then. We have been dying to talk about this for six months."

picThe mothership US series, which will feature Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, will have versions in Italy, Mexico and India. Stating that the suits at Amazon Prime approached them for the Indian version last year, Raj reveals, "The idea was crackling; there was no chance we would have said no to this. DK, our lead writer Sita Menon and I brainstormed quickly before heading to Los Angeles [to kickstart the writing process]. In India, there's a lack of experience in series writing. We learnt a lot from their writers' room and the pilot readings."

The global event series will feature interlinked stories. "This is the first time that we are exploring someone else's seed of thought. We have 90 per cent creative freedom on how we want to build the series. The world is theirs and the story is ours. There will be intersections as we progress," explains Raj, before DK elaborates, "Each instalment will have its own personality and will be culturally authentic."

Ask them where they stand on casting, and DK says, "Once the final script is locked by the month-end, we will hunt for talent. Priyanka is [only] working in the US version. We will have a pan-India cast."

Casting was on the beck and call of heroes-Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is happy to see the industry come a long way from the time when male actors enjoyed an unhealthy clout
Rishabh Suri (HINDUSTAN TIMES; January 16, 2020)

She has always taken the road less travelled in a career spanning 17 years. From starring in a film that exposed the behind-the-scenes controversies of the fashion world (Fashion; 2008) to playing a character with grey shades in 7 Khoon Maaf (2011) or stepping into the shoes of boxer Mary Kom (2014) in her biopic, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has always earned applause for her acting chops.

Currently, Bollywood is focussing firmly on films with female protagonists, and Priyanka feels the industry has come a long way from the time she started off in films. “When I first started working, we were told, ‘Heroes will decide who the heroine is going to be.’ This was 2002 or 2003; it was on the beck and call of main actors. I’m sure it still happens with a lot of films, but what has changed is the audience, and the acceptance of watching films with content instead of the gender of the lead actor. That’s one big change we’ve seen,” says the 37-year-old, who was last seen in The Sky is Pink (2019).

Priyanka’s all set to star with Richard Madden in an international event series Citadel, developed by Russo Brothers, who are known for directing Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and End Game (2019).

She also adds that there were a lot of naysayers who dissuaded her from taking up roles that eventually turned out to be her career milestones. “When I did Fashion, everyone told me, ‘Women do female-oriented films — I hate that word — when they want to win awards at the end of their careers.’ And, when I did Aitraaz (2004), I was told, ‘People will consider me a ‘vamp’, and my ‘pure’ image will get tarnished.’ I didn’t know any better, so I ended up doing them. There was no one to teach me. Now, we’ve actors like Deepika (Padukone), Alia (Bhatt), Kangana (Ranaut), Vidya (Balan) come out there and say, ‘These are the stories we want to tell, and we will do it so well we will compel you to come in and watch them.’ When I started doing it, very few people were doing it.”

Not just acting, female actors are even producing films that narrate stories that they want to share. “Yes! You start producing films when you want to tell stories no one else is making,” Priyanka continues, “You think, ‘If you’re not going to give me the kind of films I want to do, I’ll just make it myself.’ In America, that’s what I’m doing. It’s a testament not just to the actor but also the audience who are becoming gender blind. My life’s dream is that we stop referring to films as ‘female centric’, actors as ‘female actors’, directors as ‘female directors’, or athletes as ‘female athletes’. It’s just athlete, director, actor!”

Married to singer Nick Jonas, one can’t miss how much the two adore each other as it’s evident from their regular social media posts. Does Nick watch her films? “He loved Mary Kom,” she smiles, “and started asking me boxing-related questions. He cried through The Sky Is Pink, and video called Shonali (Bose), the director.” She says, “These are the kind of films artistes look for. He was invested in that film because we met during the shoot of this film, started dating and got married. He was on the sets while we were filming it!”
