There were times when Kangana Ranaut pulled off smoother stunts than Tom Cruise-Nick Powell

Having designed war sequences of Manikarnika - The Queen Of Jhansi, action director Nick Powell says Kangana Ranaut is a natural in the genre

Given how war plays an integral role in the narrative of Rani Laxmibai, it was imperative that the stunts in Manikarnika - The Queen Of Jhansi be choreographed by someone who had an innate understanding of action.

After seeing his work in Gladiator (2000) and Tom Cruise starrer The Last Samurai (2003), Kangana Ranaut and producer Kamal Jain knew international action choreographer Nick Powell would be the perfect fit for the job. Talking to mid-day about his first Bollywood project, Powell says he designed the sequences in keeping with the 19th century setting of the biopic.

"I had to be correct in terms of the artillery they used in that era. So, all my action had to centred around horse riding and sword fighting." That Manikarnika saw the action sequences being led by a woman artiste was another incentive for Powell.

"Kangana insisted on doing all the action herself. The idea was to show a warrior who has been learning the ropes from a young age. Kangana practised sword fighting for eight hours a day, and convincingly pulled off each stunt. I have worked with the likes of Russell Crowe, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, but she gave me the unique experience in which an actress was leading the pack. There were times when she pulled off smoother stunts than Tom Cruise," he laughs. Powell shot for 30 days in July last year, but was called back on set earlier this year to re-shoot some portions under Ranaut's vision.

"They wanted to better what they had achieved. So when I requested for an additional crew of 25 experts who specialise in rope work and sword fights, they immediately agreed." Having also orchestrated the action of Rajinikanth's magnum opus 2.0, Powell says he is eager to explore Indian cinema.

"I got a sense of the scope of movies in this country thanks to Manikarnika and Shankar's film. I will be returning to shoot another film in two months." Jain adds, "We reached out to Nick Powell after seeing his work and within a week, he was in my Juhu office. He was excited about designing stunts for a leading lady."

The character can be that of a father, grandfather — it doesn’t matter to me-Anil Kapoor

Anil KapoorSonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; December 13, 2017)

Amidst rumours that he will be playing father to Salman Khan in Race 3, Anil Kapoor says that he doesn’t understand the industry’s obsession with essaying young characters on screen. The actor, who did not bat an eyelid before playing the stern patriarch to Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh in Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), says he has “never been delusional” about his age. “Throughout my career, I have done roles that suit my personality and I feel that is the reason for the longevity of my career. I always look at the script and my character. The character can be that of a father, grandfather, son or even an uncle — it doesn’t matter to me,” he reasons.

From Brad Pitt playing an 80-year-old in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) to Diane Lane playing Clark Kent’s mother in Man Of Steel (2013), Kapoor points out how, in Hollywood, the onscreen age of an artiste is not a criterion while choosing scripts. “It is only in India that these things are given importance. In the West, no one questions an actor playing an older role.”

Over the weekend, Kapoor hosted the season premiere of The Grand Tour, a British motoring television series for Amazon Video. Having understood the potential of the Internet, the actor is set to announce a web series under his banner. “Web streaming platforms are the future. We already have so many web shows that people are consuming. This is another avenue that has opened up the market in a big way.”

The culinary secrets of former American President Barack Obama and wife Michelle, George Bush and wife Laura, former Prime Ministers of UK, John Major, Hollywood stars and exes, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Bollywood actor-couple Rishi and Neetu Kapoor will be revealed on Indian TV in a show curated by celebrity chef Hemant Oberoi. In the past, the celebrated chef has personally prepared meals for these personalities and over time interacted with them over their favourite meals.

The Kapoors have picked ‘Pohai Chilli Chilean Sea Bass’ as their favourite dish, while the Obamas chose ‘Varqi Crab with Prawn’. The rest of the celebrity recipes are being kept under wraps and will be unveiled on the show, titled, Food Memoirs With Chef Hemant Oberoi, which will air on Living Foodz and showcase a total of 13 delicacies from around the world.

Rishi and Neetu’s mouth-watering dish involves marinating the fillet baine of seabass in salt, crushed black pepper and lime juice. The fish is then coated with refined flour, fried and coated with a paste of pickled pohai chillies, basted with butter, sprinkled with lime juice and served hot on a plate of orzo pasta. “The pasta is boiled till al dente and strained. Then, butter is heated in a pan and spinach tossed in it before the pasta is added. It is topped with chives cream which is a mix of sauteed onions stirred with cream and cheese to which chopped chives is added and blended,” explains the chef, admitting that Rishi is an absolute foodie and can cook up a storm in the kitchen when in a great mood.

The 65-year-old-actor is one of his most loyal patrons and when the award-winning chef took a sabbatical last year, Rishi had joked, “You’re retiring, so I will finally be able to lose weight!”

I'm able to compartmentalise my private and public life-Brad Pitt

BOMBAY TIMES (May 26, 2017)

On Wednesday evening Brad Pitt was in Mumbai for an event, but the highlight of it all was his bonhomie with Shah Rukh Khan and the interesting exchange of ideas and views between the two utterly charming actors.

During an interview session, they spoke about the process of filmmaking, Bollywood dancing and the enormous pressure of being a star. Brad clearly declared that he is not cut out for Bollywood. He laughed and said, “I wouldn't make it in Bollywood, I can't dance.“ SRK quickly retorted, “We can make anyone dance.“ Then, Khan went on to tell the Hollywood star that he's no expert at dancing either, adding, “Whenever anything goes wrong in dancing, or there are complicated hip-hop steps, I tell my choreographer that I will just stand with my arms stretched out (referring to his signature style).“

Talking about the enormous pressures of being a star, both SRK and Brad agreed that it is imperative that they draw a line between their personal and public lives. Brad said, “You have to make time for yourself, your friends and family and let the next idea percolate. It isn't so difficult to achieve a balance and I'm able to compartmentalise my private and public life.“ SRK added, “I do that too, completely. My family, kids and my friends keep me grounded. My kids most often don't like my films and my films doing well is not the biggest discussion in the house. At home, you are nobody and as long as you can be nobody at home and with your friends you can be a big star like Brad Pitt.“

Elaborating on the discussion about stars being self-absorbed, SRK said, “As an actor you need to love yourself the least. As a star you need to love yourself the most. Brad and I are both stars and actors (laughs).“

Though they both come from different worlds of cinema, as actors, they confessed that they can detach from their screen characters without much struggle. “I guess that feeds into your life when you are investigating the film, it has to some way , but I quickly discard them and move on to the next project,“ explained Brad. To that, SRK agreed and said, “I have been asked several times if playing different characters has changed my life, but it hasn't. I can never say as an actor that, 'Oh, this was difficult and it took the life out of me.'“ When asked about his long innings in the business, Brad replied, “I always try to look for something different and try to reinvent myself. It is also important to survive our mistakes.“

The two went on to discuss how the world of filmmaking is evolving around them, and SRK told Brad that he admired his work, especially in films like 12 Monkeys and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. “I found you amazing in 12 Monkeys; you were mind-blowing in that film. That's when I became a fan of Brad Pitt,“ said SRK. Remembering that role, Brad added, “I locked myself in a room for a couple of weeks for 12 Monkeys and just saw where that will take us.“

While talking about the huge influence and impact of Hollywood films in India, SRK expressed his concern and said, “If we don't hone our skills in a few areas like script writing, screenplay, marketing and technology, we will be taken over. If we don't learn from them (Hollywood) in the area of technology and their professionalism, there is a big fear. We have such wonderful stories to tell but we aren't telling them in a way that they should be told.“

Talking about Indian cinema Brad didn't say much, except, “Indian cinema has its own film language, its own stars and a place of its own.“ Summing it up in his tongue-in-cheek style, SRK said, “Of course, our singing and dancing has to stay so that we can keep Brad away from Bollywood.“

While Brad impressed without saying too much, SRK, with his quintessential wit and humour, stole the show.

Deepika Padukone and Brad Pitt
MID-DAY (February 24, 2016)

Netizens went into a tizzy after rumours of Deepika Padukone being signed for a Brad Pitt movie started doing the rounds yesterday. The actress recently forayed into Hollywood with a Vin Diesel film, XXX The Return of Xander Cage, and is currently in Toronto for the shoot.

Says a source, “Deepika has bagged the role opposite Brad in a Hollywood romantic comedy. Last year proved immensely successful for her and going by this news, 2016 is set to be as big as, if not bigger than, 2015.” The actress, who was lauded for her performances in last year’s hits, Piku and Bajirao Mastani, took home the Best Actress trophy at almost every awards ceremony.

While we could not get a confirmation from Deepika’s end, a source close to her says, “After hearing the rumours, we tried contacting her but due to her hectic schedule and time difference between Canada and India (10.5 hours), she has not been able to revert. If it’s true, Bollywood will surely be proud of her.”
