When I told Saif I would voice Black Widow, he said, ‘You have to do it because no one else can’-Kareena Kapoor

Joining cast of Wastelanders as Black Widow, Kareena says Marvel audio series is her attempt at doing unusual projects at this stage
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; February 14, 2023)
First things first, Kareena Kapoor Khan admits that she is not a Marvel fanatic. But the promise of playing the spirited Black Widow can lure the best of us. “Black Widow is fierce, powerful, intelligent, and calculative. She has a boss lady vibe. I resonated with it,” smiles the actor, who will voice the iconic character in the Hindi adaptation of Marvel’s audio series Wastelanders.
Her excitement was only furthered by actor-husband Saif Ali Khan, who plays Peter Quill in the project. “Saif is a huge fan of this world. When I told him that I would voice Black Widow, he said, ‘You have to do it because no one else can.’”
Besides the duo, Masaba Gupta, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sharad Kelkar and Mithila Palkar will form the voice cast of the Audible series. Relying on one’s voice to attract an audience is presumably tough, especially for stars who are known for their visual appeal. Kapoor understands the challenge, but after over 20 years in the movies, she derives pleasure from risky opportunities.
“We have a fabulous director [Mantra Mugdh] who will guide us in the process. This being a Marvel world, it has a lot of action. I don’t know how we’ll [convey it], sitting in a cubicle,” she laughs.
To Kapoor, Wastelanders is an attempt at expanding her range. At this stage, the actor doesn’t want to do it all; instead, she wants to cherry-pick projects. So, while she has a thriller in Sujoy Ghosh’s The Devotion Of Suspect X, she also has a moody mystery in Hansal Mehta’s next.
“Now, I don’t feel the need to be seen everywhere. [I have] been there, done that. In The Devotion, I was excited to work with Sujoy, Jaideep and Vijay [Varma] because they come from different cinematic worlds. In Hansal’s film, the cast is from the UK, and the film is in English. It’s about trying to do different things. [It’s not] about chasing success, but chasing the desire to get better with every film.”
I would love to see Shah Rukh Khan as Iron Man-Siddhant Chaturvedi

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; February 12, 2023)
Bombay Times took Siddhant Chaturvedi, a diehard fan of the superhero universe and comics, on a special tour of Mumbai Comic Con. The two-day pop culture event taking place this weekend in the city is a haven for comic book and superhero lovers of all ages. At the event, the actor lived it up to the T and spoke to us at length about his love for spectacle cinema, superhero powers, assembling his own dream team of Bollywood Avengers and more. Read on...
How excited are you to be here with us at Mumbai Comic Con?
I’m super excited because it’s been a while since I attended one. I came here years ago with my brother who’s a huge Marvel fan. The energy and frenzy is bringing back a lot of memories from my college days.
You are a superhero fanboy. Who have been your favourite superheroes over the years?
I’m a big fan of the X-Men series, especially Wolverine. I used to watch its animated series after school every day. Another favourite is Batman, I love the series Batman Of The Future. I am waiting for DC to make a film on that soon.
Take us through your childhood memories — to the time your fascination for superheroes and comics began...
When I was younger, I used to travel to my native place, Ballia (in Uttar Pradesh) a lot. On the way, I would buy Raj comics at the train station. Indian superheroes like Doga, Nagraj and super commando Dhruva became my heroes, before any of the rest came along. I still have a collection of these comic books and they are my most prized possessions and memories. I also have a soft corner for Shaktimaan. If given an opportunity, I would love to play masked vigilante Doga on screen. It’s my childhood dream. I am also drawn to Chakra from the Marvel universe, who’s an Indian character. I’m hoping that they make a film on him, and cast an Indian actor.
If you were to possess a super power, what would that be?
I would love to be blessed with the power of teleportation! Imagine the time I will save and as you know, time is money. If I have that power, I can do far more things simultaneously. Probably do several film projects at the same time and also travel to my favourite places.
If you were to assemble your dream team of Bollywood Avengers, which actors would you choose?
This is interesting. I would love to see Shah Rukh Khan as Iron Man. He’s suave, witty, charming and after Pathaan, he can actually invest in making his own Iron Man suit! (laughs). Hrithik Roshan will be great as Captain America given his physique, agility and looks. Sunny Deol would be solid as the Hulk. He’d smash and smash, because he can give the Hulk a run for his money with his dhai kilo ka haath. Katrina Kaif would be perfect as the Black Widow because she’s one of the fittest people ever. She’s agile and her moves will knock out the enemies. John Abraham can be Thor. Everyone knows why. He’s the only one who’s worthy of playing that part.
Superhero films are dominating the big screens globally. What do you think has been the reason for its longevity and massive success over the years?
I think technology has played a huge part. These films have been able to convincingly immerse the audience with its visual effects and storylines that aren’t limited in scope. It’s opened a whole new dimension, the multiverse and crossovers. You’re giving the audience an escape unlike anything done before. The characters are interesting. The comics have a huge recall value and being able to see that material come alive on screen is any fan’s dream come true. The viewer is able to identify with these superheroes because they’re also portrayed as being human, which makes them more relatable.
We have our own homegrown Krrish and Brahmastra now. Do you want to see an Indian superhero gain global recognition too?
Our heroes and stories are no less. Anyone who empowers the common man is a superhero and our actors and crusaders do that everyday without costumes or gadgets. It’s all about the power of love.
Piracy is at an all time high in the age of OTT releases

Black Widow to Shershaah, this year’s most-awaited films were pirated soon after their digital release. What makes OTT platforms so vulnerable?
Niharika Lal (BOMBAY TIMES; August 29, 2021)
Ahead of their digital release in India, Black Widow and Cruella have both been available on pirated films’ websites here for months, following their international streaming release. Not just Hollywood, even the latest Bollywood flicks like Shershaah, AK vs AK, Mimi, Toofaan, Sardar Ka Grandson, and Roohi were immediately available on such sites post their digital release in India. Pirated versions of most films released on digital platforms are made available before or on the same day through links on WhatsApp and Telegram groups. In some cases — like Salman Khan-starrer Radhe, which released in May this year — pirates have been daring enough to even announce the sale of the movie on Facebook after its release and three persons were arrested under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Copyright Act in this particular case.
People from the industry find piracy with regard to OTT releases especially worrying, as not only can the films be pirated easily after they release digitally, but also because illegally downloadable versions of the films are just as good in quality as the originals.
‘UNLIKE BEFORE, NOW QUALITY OF PIRATED FILMS AT PAR WITH ORIGINAL’
Yogesh Raizada, an exhibitor, says, “Easy availability of high quality downloads of latest releases is worrisome. Earlier, pirates would record in cinemas and only poor quality versions were available on pirated films’ websites. People used to also avoid watching pirated films because of bad quality.”
Many avid streamers tell us they watch pirated content because it’s free and high definition versions are easily available. One user says, “I’m already paying for broadband. Now, if I start paying for every service that I use online, then what’s the point? Also, I don’t download pirated films. My friends send links.”
Another user says, “I don’t download Japanese, Spanish or Korean films, as in most cases the subtitle file is missing, and it is impossible to understand these without them. I only watch Hindi and English films on websites with pirated films.”
WHY DON’T FILMMAKERS COMPLAIN AGAINST OTT PIRACY?
Few arrests have been made related to OTT piracy, as according to Anyesh Roy, DCP, Cyber Cell, Delhi Police, they haven’t received any complaints yet. So, what is stopping the producers from taking collective action? Lawyers say that while streaming content and pirates have moved on to far better technologies, the law has not caught up yet and that’s why enforcement of the Copyright Act is difficult.
There are several steps that can be taken to stop piracy. Vivek Narayan Sharma, a Supreme Court lawyer, says, “Producers should contact the police if their film is pirated and ensure that an FIR is registered, so investigations can follow. The reason why producers stay away from any legal action is because of the long procedure, but film piracy is a mass violation of copyright. Platforms where these films are circulated should also be made a party to it and it is the liability of these platforms to remove the content. Last year, newspapers went to the Delhi High Court stating how their PDF copies were shared through chats and the court ordered that unauthorised dissemination be stopped. If producers or film bodies will contact the court or the government will step in to create a mechanism then it can be stopped. The court can give an injunction to stop its circulation on unlicensed platforms if it is pirated.”
Vivek Sood, a senior advocate of Delhi High Court says, “Piracy of content from streaming platforms can be stopped by three methods. First, better security of content which can’t be bypassed (and if they get to know about software which assists in piracy, they can contact the court). Two, make content easily accessible and cheaper. Third, take action against organised piracy rackets i.e. go to court to get websites blocked or complain against pirates, as any action taken sends out a message to others.”
On the other hand, an official from an OTT platform points out that when titles are released all at once around the world on streaming services, it instead helps address piracy and protects the creative community’s hard work. They add, “Platforms like ours have economical subscription plans which cost less than `200 a month, which also has helped in fighting piracy as people can watch content on their own terms without any hassles rather than resorting to piracy.”
---------------------
‘IT’S NOT DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE WITH SOFTWARE KNOW-HOW TO COPY FILMS FROM STREAMING WEBSITES’
As per an international publication, Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson’s recent lawsuit against Disney listed “piracy” as one of the reasons she was against the makers releasing the superhero film simultaneously in theatres and on digital platforms. The National Association of Theatre Owners, Los Angeles, in its statement issued in July, said, “Piracy no doubt further affected Black Widow’s performance, and will affect its future performance in international markets where it has yet to open. Pristine digital copies became available within minutes of release on Disney+. Black Widow was the most torrented movie for the week ending July 12. It is also available on myriad illegal streaming sites all over the internet. This was also the case for all simultaneous releases (Wonder Woman 1984, Godzilla vs Kong, Cruella, Mortal Kombat, etc).”
Sunny Nehra, a cyber expert, says, “Most streaming platforms use DRM protection. Pirates use screen recording and other tools specially developed to crack DRM. It is not that difficult to crack for software developers or those who work in this field.”
---------------------
CAN YOU BE ARRESTED FOR WATCHING A PIRATED FILM?
Let’s say your friend forwarded you the link to a movie downloaded from a pirated website or which was shared on an unlicensed platform. Or suppose you go on a pirated website to watch a film. Can either of these actions land you or your friend in jail? Vivek Sood, a senior advocate of Delhi High Court, says, “Downloading a film/web series/documentary from an unlicensed platform is a violation of intellectual property rights. But you can’t be arrested. Under Section 51 of the Copyright Act ‘reproduction of a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work in the form of a cinematograph film shall be deemed to be an infringing copy.’ However, Section 52 clearly states that private viewing is not an infringement. What does that mean? It means if you forward it to others or sell it, then it is an infringement and you can be arrested.”
However, Sood adds, “While you can’t be arrested, for watching pirated content, you can still be hauled up, restrained and the OTT platform which has the original content can even ask you to pay for the damage (fine) if you watch their content from an unlicensed platform.”

Black Widow heading to be the top grosser in USA

BLACK WIDOW is heading to be the top grosser in the USA post the pandemic as it chases down the numbers of FAST & FURIOUS 9. The film would have been the first $200 million film post the pandemic but it had a almost simultaneous release on Disney Plus which has no doubt hit business.
The film stands at around $143 million after its first two weeks while FAST & FURIOUS 9 is at $158 million after four weeks. After two weeks, FAST & FURIOUS 9 had collected $130 million. So BLACK WIDOW is ahead by $13 million if we compare similar stages.
FAST & FURIOUS 9 has shown good holds as last weekend, it only dropped around 33%. If this trend continues then in the final run the gap between BLACK WIDOW and FAST & FURIOUS may only be $5-8 million, depending on how the former holds. The Coronavirus cases are also rising in US and it remains to be seen how that affects the box office.
BLACK WIDOW also got the advantage of parts of Canada opening up in the second weekend which was also a factor for FAST & FURIOUS 9 but at a lower level. Both Black Widow and FAST & FURIOUS 9 have a shot at hitting the $175 million mark.
The top five films in US / Canada post the pandemic are as follows.
1. Fast & Furious 9 - $158 million (4 weeks)
2. A Quiet Place Part II - $156 million (8 weeks)
3. Black Widow - $143 million (2 weeks)
4. Godzilla vs. Kong - $100 million
5. Cruella - $84 million (8 weeks)
Black Widow collects $105 million in Week 1 in USA; collections affected due to Disney+ release

Box Office India Trade Network
BLACK WIDOW has scored a record week in the USA with collections of $105 million including previews which comfortably surpasses the $93 million of FAST & FURIOUS 9 in week one including previews. It is the first film post the pandemic to hit $100 million in a week.
These are good numbers but it could have been far better as the film began to drop on the second day due to a release on Disney + on the second day of its theatrical release. BLACK WIDOW had far better reports compared to FAST & FURIOUS 9 and was coming with the Marvel branding. But collections dropped around 40% on day two while for a film like FAST & FURIOUS 9, it was around 25%. These drops include the preview numbers which are now being added to Friday collections but both are like for like.
The drop should have been lesser for BLACK WIDOW or on a worst case similar to FAST & FURIOUS 9 due to the better reports but rampant piracy post a PVOD release film hits collections no matter what and this is what has probably happened to BLACK WIDOW. A PVOD release alongside theatrical without piracy can probably live hand in hand but that is impossible to achieve.
The PVOD release will probably also be reflected in the final worldwide numbers of the film which should have easily gone past FAST & FURIOUS 9. BLACK WIDOW should also easily become the highest grossing film post the pandemic in US but now it remains to be seen if it can go past A QUIET PLACE PART II ($152m) and FAST & FURIOUS 9 ($147m) and both films still running.
BLACK WIDOW had a shot at the $200 million mark were it not for the Disney + release due to the Marvel brand and reports of the film.
I would love to get married but don’t know where my guy is-Shamita Shetty

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; March 5, 2021)
Last year ended on a high note for Shamita Shetty, who enthralled viewers not just with the crime drama Black Widows, but also with her glamorous looks. She admits she took a lot of care as her character needed to look distinctly different from others. On her personal style and she says, “My character needed to look hot and sexy but my personal style isn’t that at all. I am simple in my personal life and I hate wearing makeup. I am comfortable in shorts and a loose t-shirt. What you see on screen is unlike what I am in real life. People were kind with their comments on my look.”
Since her debut with Mohabbatein (2000), Shetty has had a chequered career. She feels she has grown as a person and grateful for her career graph. Talking about the experiments in terms of content among actors and writers due to the OTT boom, the actor, who has a film Tenant lined up, states, “I am happy to see so many actors stand out due to their performances on OTT and then to know, they have been acting for 10 or 15 years. OTT focuses on good actors and content, rather than popular faces, which is great for all actors, including me.”
At 42, what does she think about romance and marriage? “I would love to get married but don’t know where my guy is (laughs). He is somewhere and needs to find me. I wear my heart on my sleeve, and that’s probably why I get into trouble always but I believe in love. But look around us and what is happening to the world, marriages and society. It is scary. If I want to marry someone, I need to be sure that I can be with that person for the rest of my life. There is no surety but I haven’t come across anyone who I see myself spending my life with.”
Zee joins the digital race with Radhe
8:34 AM

Box Office India Trade Network
Zee Studios has made a 250 crore investment on RADHE including PA and basically
it has joined the digital race as the interesting part of the deal is
the digital and PVOD rights pegged at 130 crore. This is a first for Zee because Disney+ Hotstar has had films pegged at 100 crore plus while Amazon
Prime has actually payed 100 crore plus for some films. We say pegged as
this when one studio has all the rights and then values are pegged for
the sister concerns for various rights. Here with Zee, there is
distribution, digital, satellite and music.
The worldwide theatrical rights are pegged at 60 crore which means that
Zee is still expecting theatrical business to be down on the expected
release date which is May. This date will be kept if India remains as it
is now with the pandemic but if there is another wave then it will be
another story. Zee could be right about the business aspect as it will
probably take longer than five months for the families to return.
The film will be a theatrical release as it stands today but its not
known how the PVOD play will work. The hope is that there is a gap
between theatrical and PVOD and not simultaneous. Warner Brothers did
the simultaneous release with WONDER WOMAN 1984 and the results are
there to be seen and its pretty much certain that piracy hit the
theatrical results. Also Salman Khan has a hardcore fan base and its
certain to assume this fan base will not be happy with a simultaneous
PVOD release.
Also BLACK WIDOW and SATYAMEVA JAYATE 2 are scheduled to release around
the same time at the moment and they could opt for Eid also. Though RADHE is a far bigger film for India than these two, a simultaneous PVOD
release can level the playing field a bit. This is not because people
will be subscribing for the film at home but because the film will be
everywhere due to a clean HD pirated print.
The price for RADHE on digital and this time payed by Zee which were not
known till now to pay big money for digital rights shows the power of
mass cinema. Irrespective of what is being said about them there have
been two films (LAXMII and COOLIE NO 1) which have given subscription
levels a push and now Zee which is behind the likes of Disney+ Hotstar and
Amazon in terms of subscribers have played their hand with RADHE. There
is no doubt that RADHE will give a push but you need deep pockets to
keep this going as these films do not come cheap. In terms of financial
recovery for Zee for digital can only come if it is given to another
platform like Amazon or others as they will pay a certain amount.
Its good for the film industry though as the digital platforms need to
show subscriber growth in their fiscals and its the LAXMII's, COOLIE NO 1's
and RADHE's which aid in that which means heavy prices for the bigger
films. Also its not as if the subscriber growth will cover the price of a
film but when everything else fails to add any numbers, then the content
which does becomes huge and that end of financial year subscription
growth in the books is the bottom line to OTT at present.
Logjam at the box office in 2021?

Even as a number of Hindi as well as Hollywood biggies shift to 2021 due to the pandemic, experts feel it will only ensure ‘a steady and robust flow’ of quality films
Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 9, 2020)
It’s a given that 2020 has been nothing less than disastrous for movie exhibition business. But now that the year is nearing it’s end, 2021 may see a box- office logjam of sorts as all the films — Bollywood, Hollywood and others — that have moved to next year, besides the ones that were anyway set for a 2021 outing, will have back-to-back dates with the big screen.
From Bollywood, titles such as Sooryavanshi, '83, Maidaan, Jersey, Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai and Laal Singh Chaddha among others have moved to 2021. Plus, a number of films such as Mumbai Saga, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Brahmastra, Bunty Aur Babli 2, Prithviraj, Shamshera and Bellbottom are either complete or nearing completion.
Experts, on their part, feel a “steady flow” will help the entire ecosystem. “The year 2021 will be a very exciting year as a number of big films will finally hit theatres, which, in turn, will contribute in bringing back people to theatres and, help theatres finally earn some revenue,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh, adding that the “big films are the need of the hour” for theatres.
Not just Bollywood movies, a number of topline Hollywood biggies such as West Side Story, Mission: Impossible 7, The Suicide Squad, Top Gun: Maverick, Fast & Furious 9, Black Widow, A Quiet Place Part II, No Time To Die, Morbius and The French Dispatch among others also made their way towards 2021. “After a remarkably bad 2020, a steady and robust flow of quality movies next year can really help bring a lot of things back on track, which is the need of the hour for the entire exhibition sector,” says exhibitor-distribitor Akshaye Rathi.
But what about the logjam at the box office? “In a way, it will be a good problem to have after a disastrous 2020. So, exhibitors and distributors may not complain with the sheer variety,” says filmmaker Anees Bazmee, adding: “But I hope that the release windows can be worked out in a way that no one faces any loss.”
Industry experts are confident that release windows can be spaced out and “makers will do that”.
Adarsh says: “I am sure everyone will space out their releases instead of stepping onto each other’s shoes. Be it screens, footfalls or box-office, they can be divided for everyone’s benefit.”
For Rathi, spacing out a film’s release is directly proportional to a film’s revenue share. “I only hope that all the tentpole films space out their release dates by at least a week because we wouldn’t want a situation wherein two or three of them are out on a day, resulting in business getting divided,” he says.
No Christmas cheer at BO?
While Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has brought in some cheer to Indian box-office with opening weekend collections of ₹4.25 crore (it’s expected to make ₹10-12 crore in India), exhibitors -distribitors are surprised that no premium Hindi film has gone for the lucrative Christmas weekend. As of now, only Wonder Woman 1984 and Shakeela are slated for December 25 release. “Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production, Tuesdays And Fridays may come out on Christmas,” says a source.

Coronavirus impact: Hollywood films shift to 2021; Bollywood to wait and watch

As the pandemic’s stranglehold continues, many Hollywood films have shifted to 2021; Bollywood to wait and watch
Prashant Singh (HINDUSTAN TIMES; August 9, 2020)
Thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, the ‘filmy drama’ seems to have swiftly shifted off screen, vis-à-vis constantly changing release dates and makers’ digital plans. Early this week, it was announced that the epic adventure, Mulan – after getting several theatrical release dates – would go the OTT way, from September 4. Janelle Monáe-starrer horror film, Antebellum, too is taking the digital route. Interestingly, besides jumping on the web space, a number of Hollywood biggies won’t have a date with cinemas this year as they shift bag and baggage to 2021.
For starters, Tom Cruise-starrer Top Gun: Maverick has been pushed to next July, while A Quiet Place Part II, starring Emily Blunt, will be out in April. Antlers has moved to February, while Ben Affleck-Matt Damon starrer The Last Duel has moved to October. Johnny Knoxville-starrer Jackass 4 has taken the September 2021 date, even as Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch has been pulled off the release calendar. Action thriller Fast And Furious 9 had already rescheduled to April 2021, besides Jared Leto’s Morbius, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife that had also moved to next year. The Scarlett Johansson-starrer Black Widow, though, still sticks to its November release date.
“It’s true that a number of tent-pole Hollywood films have moved to 2021 but having said that, a biggie like Tenet is slated to release later this month. I feel if Tenet – as expected – goes on to perform well everywhere, we may see some more activities in the coming months and other films could follow suit between October-December,” says Shibasish Sarkar, group CEO, Reliance Entertainment. In India, most of the ready films have already moved to OTT platforms, with only Sooryavanshi and ’83 lined up for a release on Diwali and Christmas, respectively.
“We wouldn’t like to move the release dates again. But the teams (of both films) will review the situation, maybe around next month,” says Sarkar, whose studio is backing both Sooryavanshi and ’83. Other films such as Jayeshbhai Jordaar, Coolie No. 1, Bunty Aur Babli 2 and Mumbai Saga may hit the theatres this year.“I believe that in another month or so, people’s fears/paranoia about Covid-19 will dissipate and they may like to visit theatres. The cinema-going people’s response in countries such as South Korea, Japan and China gives us confidence that audiences will come back to theatres,” says exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi.
At the end, trade analyst Taran Adarsh puts things in perspective. “No one has any clarity about the situation, so you can’t really blame the makers if they are moving to next year. And no clarity vis-à-vis when theatres will reopen is also making things worse. Plus, you don’t know whether people will turn up. So, there are too many question marks,” he says.
------------------------------
Biggies feel the Covid impact
Not just release dates, the Covid-19 pandemic has dealt a major blow to several Hollywood biggies’ production plans as well. To start with, the Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel has been pushed to December 17, 2021. Also, the upcoming Star Wars and Avatar movies have been delayed by a year. So, the first Avatar sequel will only be out in December, 2022. Also, the shoot of much-talked-about Friends reunion episode, which was originally slated to be shot in March, has been delayed. “It’s a wait-and-watch situation everywhere. It’s all about people’s survival now. I don’t think many people across the world have entertainment on their priority list,” says Adarsh.

HOLLYWOOD FILMS GET PUSHED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK
One of the first biggies of Hollywood of 2020 was going to be No Time To Die. It is the 25th film of the popular James Bond franchise and there was a lot of hype for it worldwide. The release date was set for April 10 in most markets and April 3 in India. But then the Coronavirus outbreak caused panic all around the planet. Hence, on March 4, the producers decided to postpone the film to November 12 in United Kingdom and November 25 in the USA. This decision led to shockwaves all over. While some feel it’s justified, many felt it was wrong to push the film by almost 6 months. After all, in the first week of March, the world had not woken up to the fact that this disease is going to cause madness like never before.
If this was not enough, the Fast & Furious 9 makers went a step ahead. This actioner was to release on May 22. In India, it was to clash with 2 other Eid releases – Radhe and Laxmmi Bomb. However on March 12, the makers announced that it has been postponed to, believe it or not, April 2, 2021! The message was clear – there’s fear that the outbreak will take a lot of months to subside.
In no time, other biggies to followed suit. The Marvel film Black Widow was to release on April 30 was pushed to November 6. On this day in November, The Eternals was to come and it was postponed to February 12, 2021. Mulan, which was scheduled to hit cinemas on March 27, will now arrive on July 24, 2020.
Talking of DC films, they were all set to present Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5. It is now scheduled for a release on August 14. The horror flick A Quiet Place Part II will now release on September 4, 2020 after initially being planned for a March 20 release.
Fans of Tom Cruise, meanwhile, would have to wait longer as Top Gun: Maverick is pushed from July 12, 2020 to December 23, 2020. Minions: The Rise of Gru, like Fast & Furious 9, was also pushed to 2021, from July 3, 2020 to July 2, 2021. Same goes for Jungle Cruise – from July 24, 2020, it has been pushed to July 30, 2021! Ghostbusters: Afterlife too got moved to 2021 but not by 1 full year. From July 10, 2020, it has been postponed to March 5, 2021. Similarly, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which was to come on April 3, 2020 will now hit theatres on January 15, 2021. Meanwhile, Chirstopher Nolan’s highly awaited Tenet is scheduled for July 17, 2020 release. There has been no change in release plans of this thriller as of now.
Meanwhile, a few films have been moved to digital. Onward released on March 6 but after the outbreak grew bigger, it was released on the streaming platform Disney+. Artemis Fowl, meanwhile, will no longer come to cinemas. It’ll directly arrive on Disney+. Trolls World Tour had a very limited release in USA and has been released on OTT. The release of Kumail Nanjiani’s film The Lovebirds was cancelled and it’ll release directly on Netflix.
There are many more Hollywood movies which have also got postponed. The question in people’s minds is – will these films be able to adhere to the new release dates? Will there be a further postponement? Only time will tell.
