Salman Khan never pressured me even though I was a newcomer-Bhumika Chawla

Bhumika Chawla on completing 25 years in showbiz

Two and a half decades on, the actor speaks about changing times, memorable roles and her next chapter
S Farah Rizvi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 26, 2025)

Actor Bhumika Chawla completes 25 years in the film industry this year, a milestone shaped across 62 films in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi cinema. She looks back at her journey with gratitude, remembering how Mumbai became the foundation of her life and career.

“Since the time I came to Mumbai, it has accepted me and made me what I am today,” she says. Bhumika recalls arriving in the city as a 17-year-old, when advertisements and music videos defined the early 2000s: “From being that young girl to now having an 11-year-old son, it has been quite a journey.”

She also reflects on how much regional cinema has transformed since she began working. “In those days it was not easy to work across regions the way it is today,” Bhumika says, noting that the mainstream popularity of South films and actors is a relatively recent cultural shift. “How popular regional films have become today was not the case when I entered the industry. And it is not that only now everything is good. That narrative has become a bit cliched for me,” she says.

Among the highlights of her career, she still remembers the impact of Tere Naam (2003) with Salman Khan and Run (2004) with Abhishek Bachchan. She shares, “I feel grateful that those films became so big. Once in a while you think about those days when you picked those films, met those actors and worked with them.”

She also remembers Salman’s generosity on the set of Tere Naam: “He never pressured me even though I was a newcomer who could miss a line.”

With renewed talk of a sequel to Tere Naam, Bhumika believes certain films deserve to remain untouched. “I feel sometimes a film should be left where it is, especially if it has been successful and remembered even after so many years,” she ends.

Some of the biggest films I signed didn’t happen-Bhumika Chawla

Bhumika Chawla on missed films, mindful choices and rumours of a Tere Naam sequel
Tanvi J Trivedi (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 31, 2025)

Bhumika Chawla, who starred opposite Salman Khan in the hit film Tere Naam, admits that her Bollywood career didn’t quite unfold the way people expected it to. But, she says, she has no regrets. The actress shares, “I have been selective, and some of the biggest films that I had signed didn’t happen — they got delayed, the teams changed, or perhaps they just weren’t meant to be. I believe every film comes with its own destiny, and the teams that eventually come together are the ones who are meant to be there.”

Despite not replicating the massive success of Tere Naam, Bhumika remains content with the path she has chosen. “Of course, I would love to do more projects on OTT platforms, though I’ll continue to be selective about the stories and characters I choose. For me, it’s always about quality over quantity.”

Last seen in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, she is now gearing up for her next release, Kesar, co-starring Arbaaz Khan and Dipshikha Nagpal. Talking about the film, she says, “I truly enjoyed shooting for Kesar, and for me, it has been a reminder of how precious our life and families are.”

Describing her character as a “simple middle-class lady,” Bhumika adds that the story is rooted in everyday emotions. Reflecting on her own life, she draws parallels with her on-screen persona. “I think Kesar and I would connect on the idea that no matter what, one must live each moment to the fullest. Don’t wait to spend time with family — time really does fly, and children grow up so quickly.”

Beyond cinema, Bhumika also stresses the importance of self-care. “We often take our life and health for granted. It’s so important to look after ourselves and get regular check-ups done — something most of us, especially women, tend to delay,” she says.

On rumours about a sequel to Tere Naam
“I haven’t heard about a sequel to Tere Naam being made,” says Bhumika. “If I am approached, I’ll see. Sequel-making is subjective — sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, and it really depends on the content. Also, audiences’ tastes vary from time to time.”

I still don’t know how the industry works-Bhumika Chawla

I still don’t know how the industry works, says Bhumika
Syeda Eba Fatima (HINDUSTAN TIMES; November 30, 2022)

Bhumika Chawla has been working simultaneously in Hindi as well as regional film industries. But, the actor says people in Bollywood assume she has stopped working altogether, as a result of which she hasn’t been getting enough work.

“Either I am not a good actor or my PRs are not making enough calls,” quips Chawla, who was last seen in the film Sita Ramam.

The actor, who made her mark in Hindi films with the Salman Khan-starrer Tere Naam (2003), admits that things aren’t the same anymore. “I don’t know how the industry works. Like, if I want to work with someone on a streaming giant, I don’t know how to enter that zone. Perhaps, I could put up a post on my [social media] page, saying, ‘I’m looking for work, somebody give me work’. I don’t know who to approach. I still feel like I am a beginner, a newcomer, a student,” she shares.

However, she still enjoys a loyal fan following, having starred in the Hindi films Run (2004), M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016) as well as several Tamil and Telugu outings. “I’ve spent almost 23 years [in films] and I can credit only God, the audience and the industry people who have been kind enough to give me work. I still don’t know how the show business works... It’s like, ‘Let’s go on social media, let’s make a few calls, let’s attend a few parties’. You don’t really know what’s going to work,” she tells us, adding that she is still hungry for good work.

“I want to work with people who can bring out the best in me. I am not going to sit down and not want to grow, not just in terms of work, but also as a person,” Chawla wraps up.

One should age gracefully and accept that we are ageing-Bhumika Chawla

Kavita Awaasthi (HINDUSTAN TIMES; December 14, 2021)

Bhumika Chawla has had two Telugu films released this year; she has finished one more film, and will soon begin shooting for a Hindi film, while another is set to be released. Unfazed about not working in Bollywood regularly, the actor adds, “After M S Dhoni - The Untold Story (2016), I didn’t get good enough offers in Hindi, so I didn’t sign any.”

She adds, “For me, regardless of the length of the role, I want to work on projects that leave a mark. The journey of the shoot’s more important than the end result. We work on a film for a long time, so it has to be worth my time to leave my child at home and go out and work. If it is successful, then it is like a cherry on a cake.”

Chawla has recently taken on character roles after having played the lead in films in both South and Hindi cinema. She explains that whether she played the lead or not was never her first priority: “Even in massy commercial films, I had roles that took the film forward.”

Ask the 43-year-old if age has been a factor in roles that are being offered to her now and she says, “I don’t think about age as you can’t stop it. One should age gracefully and accept that we are ageing.”

She adds, “We should do our jobs well and understand where we stand. Then we’ll be able to deliver well. Yes, the roles I play are character-based. In my Tamil film, I am the lead, but I am not doing five dances. It is a concept-based film. It doesn’t matter that you aren’t playing a 20-year-old but a 30- or 40-year-old. I don’t give age that much thought. I take life as it comes.”

I don’t think I will be good on a show like Bigg Boss-Bhumika Chawla

Roshni Olivera (BOMBAY TIMES; November 12, 2021)

Bhumika Chawla made her Bollywood debut with Salman Khan in Tere Naam in 2003. The movie was a huge hit, but she did very few Hindi films after that. However, the actress has no regrets, she says, as she was busy doing Telugu and Tamil films. Now with different mediums opening up, the scope for actors has widened and Bhumika is looking forward to being a part of exciting projects. In a candid chat, she speaks about her career choices, why she has kept a low profile, her marriage to yoga guru Bharat Thakur and rumours of an offer to be a part of the reality show Bigg Boss. Excerpts...

In Bollywood, you were last seen in the biopic M S Dhoni - The Untold Story. Why did you choose to do a cameo?
I played Dhoni’s sister, who supports him. The role made a difference to the story, so I decided to do it. The length of the role is not always the criteria. My role should make a difference to the story or take the story forward. Another reason was that it was a biopic on a cricketer.

Where do you see yourself in the current Bollywood scenario?
I did a Hindi film a few months ago, but I can’t talk about it at the moment. Competition has always been there, and one needs to have good connections and keep in touch with people, production houses and casting directors. One has to be in the right place at the right time. I don’t know where I stand in the line, yet it doesn’t really worry me because I am constantly working in films... they may be in different languages, but God has been kind. Also, I try to find the right balance between my personal and professional life.

You always kept a low profile and were rarely seen on the party circuit ...
I was a quiet person trying to figure out how to go about things. I felt if I just worked, it would be fine. Though now, I am more open to connecting with people. We, as humans, go through different phases and thought processes in life as we keep going and growing. I have always been a private person. I never was part of any social circle or any camp; I did my work and went back home and that has continued till date. I don’t think one gets work by attending parties or socialising.

A lot has changed now and being married is no longer an impediment in an actress’ career. What do you have to say about that?
It’s great to see this change. Today, the audience is not affected by an actress’ personal life like earlier. They want good content and it doesn’t matter if an actress is married or not. Look at Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Vidya Balan, they are all doing so well. We, as an industry, have evolved in thought, perception and perspectives and so has the audience. With different mediums opening up, there is a lot of scope for actors; I hope to do some good work, too.

Your husband, Bharat Thakur, is a yoga guru. How much has that changed your life?
Yoga has changed a lot of things in my life. My husband and I understand each other and give each other space. I have always been a family-oriented person, but at the same time, we both balance our personal and professional lives. Yoga has made me a better person. It helps one mentally and spiritually, too. I feel it has added to my patience and mental peace.

There were rumours of you doing Bigg Boss. Would you want to be a part of the reality show?
I don’t think I will be good on a show like Bigg Boss. I am quite a private person. Having said that, life has its own ways. Therefore, never say never. Opportunities vary and so do actors’ decisions. You may skip an opportunity now, but accept it later.

If not an actor, what would you have been?
Maybe a sportsperson. Gymnastics always attracted me and I had thought of becoming a gymnast during my growing up years.

Barber shops, even in Pakistan and Afghanistan, have posters advertising the Tere Naam cut-Satish Kaushik

Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 17, 2019)

On August 15, 2003, Salman Khan’s Radhe stormed into the theatres. Director Satish Kaushik who’d gone for an Independence Day celebration to Jallianwala Bagh with Jeetendra and Anupam Kher, was disappointed when his flight was delayed and he missed the Delhi premiere. But by the next day, they knew their out-of-the-box gamble and a mainstream star had paid off. People loved Salman in Tere Naam, even when he was in a kachcha, locked up as insane. And as the bad boy, they loved his jeans, jackets and wayward locks.

“Barber shops, even in Pakistan and Afghanistan, have posters advertising the cut,” informs Satish, saying it was his hero’s brainwave. “He wasn’t happy while shooting in Hyderabad, so he dashed to Mumbai and returned after two days with his hair set, flipping it back in a way that was soon widely copied.”

Boney Kapoor had wanted to remake Vikram’s 1999 Tamil romance drama, Sethu, with Ram Gopal Varma. Then, the rights passed to Nitin Manmohan, before landing with Sunil Manchanda and Mukesh Talreja. During an ad film shoot, Sunil confided that no director wanted to do the film and Satish who’d seen the original and was free, jumped on board. He had three hits—Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai and Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai —all South remakes, behind him, and when he met Salman, he was told he’d been on their radar. They kicked off on a set in Film City within a fortnight since the actor had already shaved his head for the scenes in the asylum.

The film was earlier titled Radhe, but Satish recalled Jaan Tere Naam, which had released almost a decade ago, and suggested they drop ‘Jaan’ and call their film ‘Tere Naam’. They also got Himesh Reshammiya to compose the title track after a couple of songs had been recorded. “His ‘ Odhni’ and ‘ O Jaana’ along with the title track are playing even today,” Satish says.

He could have got any top heroine opposite Salman, but looking for a simple, pretty girl, he spotted Bhumika Chawla in a Telugu TV show while at Boney and Sridevi’s house. Boney admitted even he’d thought of her for the film. She’d done an ad with Sunil and lived behind Satish’s house. “She came with some pictures shot in a small studio and I knew I had found my Nirjara,” the director smiles. The original had the couple meeting at a tea stall, in the remake, they decided to set their scenes in a railway station canteen. “Bhumika suggested Devlali station and since not many trains halted there and we wanted them in the frame, we shot those scenes around the timetable of the trains.”

The film, based on the real-life story of Sethu director Bala’s friend, is considered one of Salman’s best performances despite his apprehensions that Radhe was not a good role model for youngsters. “There are boys like him in small towns and the audience connected with Radhe,” reasons Satish who learnt a lot from his hero and recently, during Bharat, they shared some fond memories.

He has a script for the sequel but has yet to take it to Salman. “Tere Naam is a milestone in our careers and I’m glad despite pressures we stuck to the original end. We might have made a little more money with a happily-ever-after love story, but it’s the tragic romances that live on in people’s hearts,” Satish says.

Prabhu Dheva turns bad man for the first time ever with Kolaiyuthir Kaalam remake

Tamannaah Bhatia and Bhumika Chawla join him in Tamil remake
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 15, 2017)

Prabhu Dheva, Tamannaah Bhatia and Bhumika Chawla are teaming up for the Hindi remake of the yet-to-release Tamil film Kolaiyuthir Kaalam. The Tamil version stars South actress Nayanthara. Chakri Toleti, who has directed Tamil and Telugu films, makes his Bollywood debut with this film.

Confirming the news, Prabhu Dheva says, “When I heard the script I was taken aback, it was such a different role from what you expect from me. For the first time I play the antagonist.“

Producer Vashu Bhagnani points out that his first film, Coolie No.1 (1995) was a remake of a Tamil film, Chinna Mapillai. “Today, after 21 years, we are again remaking a Tamil film. After a handful of comedy films, we want to explore different genres and this thriller excited all of us. Given Tamannaah's chemistry with Prabhu Dheva and a brilliant script, we are on a good wicket. Shooting has already begun in London.“

Bhumika Chawla refutes rumours that hubby Bharat Thakur roadblocked her career

Bhumika Chawla returns to Bollywood after nine years
Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 27, 2016)

Bhumika Chawla's last Hindi film was the Anil Kapoor produced 2007 biographical drama, Gandhi, My Father. She played Gulab, Mahatma Gandhi's daughter-in-law and the wife of his son Hiralal. Soon after its release, she married long-time boyfriend and yoga guru Bharat Thakur. She continued working in movies down South, but dropped out of the Bollywood radar and returns, almost a decade later, as Sushant Singh Rajput's sister, Jayanti, in Neeraj Pandey's upcoming biopic, M S Dhoni - The Untold Story.

Bhumika insists the break wasn't intentional and she'd signed Jab We Met but the production house changed and so did the cast, from Bobby Deol and her to Bobby and Ayesha Takia to Ayesha and Shahid Kapoor before being made with Kareena Kapoor and Shahid. "I was also offered Juhi Chawla's role in My Brother...Nikhil, but things didn't work out,"she sighs.

Any regrets about losing out on Imtiaz Ali's love story? "No, when I saw Kareena's performance I was certain no one could have played Geet better," asserts Bhumika. There have been constant rumours that her husband didn't want her to work. She laughs, "For a man who himself is a workaholic, having a wife sitting at home chewing his brain is the last thing he'd want." But reportedly, five years ago, there was trouble in paradise? The 38-year-old actress reasons that like every other couple, they had difference of opinions but nothing so serious for them to divorce.

She however admits that six years ago, she hadn't wanted to produce the Telugu film Thakita Thakita and had only agreed because Bharat insisted. "We were living in Hyderabad then and he had some close friends in the industry. He got really excited about this film and as his wife, I stood by him," she says. The film bombed and today she insists she'll never get into something unless she is really sure.

For now the focus is the biopic and she's not worried about moving to sister roles, pointing out that Priyanka Chopra played Ranveer Singh's sister in Dil Dhadakne Do and his wife in Bajirao Mastani. Even Aishwarya Bachchan played Randeep Hooda's sister in Sarbjit but is now romancing Ranbir Kapoor in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. "As long as I'm a part of a good film and the role is worth leaving my two-year-old son Yash back home I'm happy," she says.

Bhumika's still remembered as Salman Khan's Tere Naam girl and bumped into him in Dubai a year-and-a-half ago. "During Tere Naam he was really sweet and patient with me," she reminisces with a smile.

Bhumika Chawla confirms that she has bagged M S Dhoni - The Untold Story

Sonil Dedhia (BOMBAY TIMES; November 17, 2015)

Bhumika Chawla, who made her Bollywood debut with Salman Khan in Tere Naam (2003), had disappeared after a brief stint. She's now making a comeback and will be seen in M S Dhoni - The Untold Story. A source tells us that the actress is playing a prominent role in Neeraj Pandey's biopic on the Indian cricketer. Apparently, she also has crucial sequences in the movie.

When contacted, Bhumika said, “Yes I'm doing the film. But I can't reveal anything about my role at this point. I'm excited about doing a Hindi film after a long time.“ Her last Bollywood film Gandhi, My Father released in 2007 after which she shifted her focus and started doing South films.

Bhumika Chawla gives birth to baby boy

Karthik Pasupulate (BOMBAY TIMES; March 1, 2014)

Actress Bhumika Chawla of Tere Naam fame gave birth to a baby boy recently. About her first reaction on seeing the baby, she says, “I was excited and had this rush of emotions. Both Bharat (Thakur) and I had tears of joy.”

“It’s been a beautiful journey right from pregnancy to becoming a mother. It’s hard to find words to describe the gamut of emotions I’m going through,” she shares, adding, “I guess sleepless nights go hand-in-hand with motherhood. But it’s just the most incredible feeling in the world.”

However, the actress is unsure about who the boy resembles more, her or Bharat. “I don’t know. He’s a combination of both of us, I guess,” says the actress, who is in the process of choosing a name for the newborn. “We will have the official namkaran ceremony in a couple of days. We still haven’t zeroed in on the name,” she explains.

While it’s obvious that her life will revolve around her baby from now on, Bhumika says she will never give up acting. “I’ve never really stopped working. I worked during my pregnancy. Last year, when I was working on April Fool, everyone asked me if this was my comeback film. I never really left to make a comeback. Well, the movie did not release and I guess that’s why people have been asking me the same question,” she says.
