Images: A glimpse at Baba Siddiqui's star-studded Iftaar party 2018

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 11, 2018)

Politician Baba Siddiqui, whose annual iftaar party has become a significant event in Bollywood’s social calendar, upped the ante this year by flying down chefs from Hyderabad, Delhi and Lucknow for a daawat for 300 guests on Sunday.

Celebrations kicked off around 7:30 pm at a sea-facing Bandra five-star with Salim Khan among the early birds with son Arbaaz. The duo avoided questions pertaining to the actor’s involvement in the betting scandal.

The guests, also including Suniel Shetty, Chunky Panday, Remo D’souza, Zayed Khan with father Sanjay, Richa Chadha, Mouni Roy and Madhur Bhandarkar with wife Renu, were treated to haleem, shahi tukda, bhatti ki murg tikki, baigan mirch ka saalan and pistachio phirnis. Sanjay Nirupam and Ashok Chavan represented the political brigade.

The do made up for the lack of Salman and Shah Rukh Khan’s almost ritualistic Eid jhappi this year — the latter is shooting Zero at NASA —with a few firsts.

Composer Himesh Reshammiya and Sonia Kapur, who tied the knot last month, made their debut public appearance. Salman arrived a while later and after greeting the hosts, joined his family. Iulia Vantur was next to turn up, but the Romanian singer-model was seen chatting with Shilpa Shetty and Maniesh Paul. Salman stayed on for half an hour. Anil Kapoor, like most stars at the do, maintained a safe distance from the buffet.

Freddy Daruwala and Saqib Saleem, who arrived with producer Ramesh Taurani and Bobby Deol, appeared to be enjoying their cheat day. Saqib’s actress-sister Huma Qureshi joined in later after wrapping up a shoot.

No hug this year but Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan meet post-Iftar

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 26, 2017)

Eid in 2013 was marked by superstars Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan calling time on their decade-long cold war with a hug at politician-mutual friend Baba Siddiqui’s iftar party. Bollywood lore has it that Salman tapped a pony-tailed SRK on the shoulder, while the latter turned his attention away from a plate of assorted delicacies to give his friend-turned-foe and former co-star a warm hug. The picture that captured the moment fuelled headlines over the next few weeks, elevating all forthcoming iftar parties hosted by Baba to the status of must-watch events on the city’s social calendar.

But this year, on Saturday evening, Salman and SRK, who have shared a decidedly warmer equation ever since, arrived and exited separately at their first iftar appearance of the year. Khan patriarch Salim, along with wives Salma and Helen, son Sohail Khan, daughters Alvira with husband Atul Agnihotri, and Arpita with son Ahil, had already arrived when Sallu walked into the Bandra five-star at around 9pm. “Salman was at his jovial best, clicking selfies with fans and posing for the photographers. When he ribbed the paparazzi, announcing that they should have dinner now, they quipped that they were waiting for SRK to arrive and recreate the duo’s annual hug. Sallu responded with a cheeky smile and entered the venue with Baba where he was joined by the host’s son, Zeeshan,” a guest told Mirror, adding that a kid rushed to him with a bowl of sheer kurma and though he wasn’t supposed to be eating it, he obliged the young fan by taking a spoonful.

The 51-year-old actor then mingled with actor-composer Himesh Reshammiya, filmmakers Sajid Nadiadwala and Bhushan Kumar, father-son duo Aditya and Sooraj Pancholi, among others. Politicians Sushil Kumar Shinde, Prithviraj Chauhan and Ashok Chauhan were also present at the bash.

SRK, who had spent the entire day shooting for Aanand L Rai’s yetuntitled romance-drama at Film City, entered quietly from the hotel’s back entrance around 11:30pm. However, Salman had already made an exit by then. “SRK looked tired after a busy week and didn’t stay for too long but at Zeeshan’s behest, ate a kebab,” the guest informed.

While everyone thought SRK was headed home, the actor actually made a pit-stop at his neighbourturned- bestie’s residence for a quiet, post-iftar meeting.

Manyata trying to patch things up between Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan?

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; July 14, 2016)

There was a time when Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt’s friendship was counted among Bollywood’s legendary bonds. It goes all the way back to 1991 when the two worked in Saajan. But, there has been stone- cold silence between the two since Dutt walked out of prison in February. While reasons behind the rift are still unclear, the frost might have started thawing. If sources are to be believed, Dutt’s wife, Manyata, has been making attempts to get in touch with Salman and convince him to give the friendship another chance.

“Manyata is eager to play peacemaker between the two stars, who are not on talking terms and are going to great lengths to ensure they don’t cross each other’s paths. She wants to bring an end to the cold war and revive the longstanding bond,” says an industry source.

It was speculated that the rift was ignited when Ranbir Kapoor, ex of Salman’s ex Katrina Kaif, was chosen to play the protagonist in Dutt’s biopic. Then reports emerged that the Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor had recommended his manager to Dutt to help him bag plum projects after completing prison term. However, after waiting for months, he allegedly didn’t get any good offers and decided to fire Shetty. That didn’t go down well with Salman, the reports claimed.

The two were expected to make peace at politician Baba Siddiqui’s iftaar party — just the way Salman and Shah Rukh Khan did two years ago. However, Dutt skipped the feast. At an awards function in Spain last month, the two chose to party separately and kept distance from each other. “But, Manyata does not want the negativity to fester. She wants them to swallow their pride and get back to being best of buddies. She has already convinced Dutt to let bygones be bygones. Now, she is trying to reach out to Salman by sending messages of peace to put the misunderstanding behind them,” adds the source.

Dutt’s spokesperson says, “ There is absolute no problem between the two and therefore, the question of reconciliation doesn’t arrive. In fact, at the recent awards event, Sanjay and Salman had a long chat over coffee post which Sanjay even attended a party hosted by Salman.”

Salman Khan-Iulia Vantur's presence to make Baba Siddiqui's annual iftaar party a twosome affair?

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 18, 2016)

MLA Baba Siddiqui's iftaar parties have always been the talk of the town - if not for the sumptuous spread then for the Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan patchup. Their jadoo ki jhappis at these annual bashes grabbed headlines in 2013 and 2014 and has become synonymous with the truce of the decade. This Sunday, the bash is being hosted at a five-star hotel in Bandra and despite the presence of big names from cinema, politics and business, all eyes will be on Bhai, who is expected to make an appearance with his steady date, Iulia Vantur.

The first time the two made a public appearance at Preity Zinta and Gene Goodenough's wedding reception, the actor chose to walk ahead of the 35-year-old-Romanian model cheekily pointing out that she had come with his sister Alvira, instead. Earlier this month, Iulia returned from Budapest with Salman but he exited the airport minutes before her ,even though the couple drove away in the same car.

This time too, Salman doesn't want to make a big deal of his joint entry. He has asked Alvira to accompany Iulia and him and made it a couples gathering. It was Salman's idea to host the celebrations for both men and women this year. He asked Baba to send invites asking guests to come to the party with their wives or girlfriends. "Salman, Alvira, Reshma Shetty suggested that we invite women too. This iftaar dinner will be the first one where women will break their fast alongside men in India," Baba Siddique informed Mirror.

Will Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt make peace at Baba Siddiqui’s iftar party?

All eyes are on Baba Siddiqui’s iftar party this Sunday where the two stars, who are allegedly not on talking terms, are likely to cross paths
Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; June 14, 2016)

The apparent animosity between Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt has set the gossip mills buzzing overtime. While the exact reason behind their rumoured fallout remains unknown, talk about a ‘rift’ started doing the rounds when Salman refrained from catching up with his buddy after he walked out of prison as a free man in February.

So, with the holy month of Ramzan having begun, industry folk have turned their attention to one of the most star- studded iftar parties of the season — hosted by politician Baba Siddiqui where the two actors are likely to come face to face. It was at his 2013 iftar bash that Salman and Shah Rukh Khan ended their long cold war with a warm hug.

So, this Sunday, will Salman extend an olive branch to Dutt too? A source says, “In the last few months, the two actors were supposed to attend quite a few common events, but they made sure not to cross each other’s paths. Salman is a regular at Baba’s iftar parties; so has been Dutt. So, Baba might try and play the peacemaker between the two like he did in case of Salman and SRK.” Salman’s rumoured girlfriend Iulia Vantur will also possibly be part of the feasting.

When we got in touch with Baba, he said, “As far as my knowledge is concerned, there is no fight between them.”

Jacqueline Fernandez dines with Salman Khan & family at iftar party, quelling rumours of a fallout?

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; July 7, 2015)

The grapevine had been buzzing with stories of a fallout between Salman Khan and his Kick heroine Jacqueline Fernandez, but the duo laid all speculations to rest at an iftar party on Sunday. They met, spoke and even dined together on the occasion.

A source says, “Jacky entered politician Baba Siddiqui’s party at around 7.30 pm. Salman and his family were already present there. Baba escorted her to Salman’s table and he immediately got up to greet her. She not only spoke to his family members one after the other, but also sat down with them and had food. Salman and she looked comfortable together.”

Last month, the superstar sparked rumours about all not being well with Jacky when he mentioned that she had been ‘kicked out’ of the sequel of Kick (2014). However, the actress made no bones about the remark saying that Salman had done enough for her and she hopes to work with him in future.

Prior to that, as the who’s who of Bollywood visited Salman post his 2002 hit-and-run judgment, Jacqueline was conspicuous by her absence. Jacky and Varun Dhawan, who have been shooting for Dhishoom, had packed up early to be present at the party.

Another source says, “Post dinner, Salman and his family members left in separate cars, while his father, Salim Khan, was the last person to leave the venue. Jacky spotted him outside and decided to drive up with him. So, she instructed her team to leave saying that she wants to accompany Salim uncle till his house and then head home.”

The actress was not available for comment.

Paparazzi boycott Baba Siddiqui's iftaar party after barricade collapses, injuring photographers

Sanyukta Iyer & Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 6, 2015)

Former state MP Baba Siddiqui's iftaar parties have been in the news since 2013 when the warring Khans, Shah Rukh and Salman Khan, buried their 10-year-old dushmani with a bear hug which grabbed headlines across the country. They gave a repeat performance of the 'hug' last year.

This year, with SRK away in Bulgaria for the shoot of his home production, Dilwale, and Salman busy with the promotions of his own production, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, no one was expecting any fireworks at the suburban five-star hotel on Sunday evening. But the celebratory mood quickly evaporated for the still photographers who were waiting to catch the red-carpet action.

They had been herded into a barricade small enough for around 20 people which quickly filled up with more photographers, videographers and the electronic media, as news spread that Salman was expected with his entire family.

“At 7.20 pm, with all the pushing and shoving going on, the barricade collapsed. Two photographers, Pradeep Das and Vinod Kumar Singh, are seriously injured and four others sustained minor injuries,“ informed Mirror photographer Satish Malavade, adding that the media were being treated like cattle.“Baba Siddiqui had been intimated about the poor arrangements before the accident but he showed little interest. When the media began to leave, his publicist informed that they had their own photographer to cover the event. After this, the aggrieved lensers decided to boycott the event and went back en masse.“

Not a single picture of Salman was clicked. He arrived soon after his father Salim Khan, brother-in law Atul Agnihotri and sister Alvira made their entrance and was accompanied by his Kick co-star Jacqueline Fernandez and actor Varun Dhawan. Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, whose son Sooraj, is being launched by Salman in the Hero remake, were also there, as were Salman's younger sister Arpita and her husband, Aayush Sharma. But there were no photographers outside to click them so RJs and fans made do with selfie moments on their cell phones.

By 9 pm all the guests, including Kabir Khan and wife Mini Mathur, Zarine Khan, Daisy Shah, Sangeeta Bijlani, Dino Morea, Sushant Singh Rajput with girlfriend Ankita Lokhande, Pulkit Samrat, Gurmeet Choudhary and Sonu Sood, had left the venue, leaving Baba to enjoy the night with his politician friends.

When contacted, Baba Siddiqui did not wish to comment and asked Mirror to speak to his publicist.

This is not the first time the photographers have boycotted an event at which Salman was present. On July 11, 2014, at the launch of Devil, a special song for Kick, bouncers at the venue apparently misbehaved with some of the photographers. Salman intervened and announced that if anyone wanted to leave the venue, they were free to do so, adding that the paparazzi should maintain a certain distance.

But in November, Salman personally invited photographers to Arpita's wedding reception party and the paparazzi called off the ban owing to the sweet gesture by the superstar. At the time, they had said that henceforth, they will capture Bhai at every event. But this time their fallout was not with Bhai but with the arrangements at the venue.

After Shah Rukh Khan-Salman Khan's truce, now what next?

Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; December 1, 2014)

Enlarge ImageThey’ve been at loggerheads for as long as anyone can remember, but with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan now making peace after six long years, it’s more than the fans and the snaparazzi that’s over the moon. Pictures and videos of their recent hugs went viral the moment the patch-up happened. But now that it has, here’s what we can expect in this time of peace....

Peace between fans
The two Khans might not have been feuding as much as their fans who took to social networks to wage all-out war all the time. Chalo, ek comment aisa bhi aayega: Itna sannata kyun hai bhai?

Club snub
Remember how you wouldn’t see one group never mix with the other Khan’s buddies? Now it’s going to be all like hum saath-saath hain. Booooooringgg!

Collection clash khatam
More than a Khan film’s content, it’s the collections that gets a nation’s (and the trade’s) pulse racing. Happy New Year or Kick? Will Salman release his film on Diwali (SRK’s special festival release time)? Box office ka king kaun? All these questions will never come up.

Cameo parade
On screen, you saw them come together for OSO’s Deewangi Deewangi track. Since their fallout, they haven’t shot a frame together. But now that Bhai went all out to promote SRK’s HNY on Bigg Boss 8, we guess it’s time King Khan made his debut on the show. Who knows SRK-Kajol might just end up celebrating DDLJ’s 1000th week on BB8! Better still, Salman could reccomend SRK for BB9.

Two’s company
Bromance is as old as Andaz Apna Apna or Karan Arjun. And while one rarely sees two-hero outings these days, the bhaigiri was on full show in both films as well as in Salman’s special appearance in KKHH. Somebody put these two actors together already!

Pics and paps
Feud notwithstanding, both Khans posed for the cameras together, grabbing headlines everytime they did so. Twice at politician Baba Siddiqui’s iftaar bashes and once at an awards event last year, their warm hugs showed they were ready for peace. And after the reunion at the Arpita wedding, the two danced the night away at her reception to Chaiyya Chaiyya. The photo-ops in the near future will sure #breaktheinternet!

Trailer thrillers
Cross promotion will be the order of the day with each endorsing the other’s projects. And who knows, sooner rather than later, the two could attach promos of their upcoming films to the other’s releases. Imagine the eyeballs! Salman’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo trailer hits screens in August next year while SRK’s Fan will be out on Independence Day. And this time, if the two come together, it will be because of the Khans themselves and not the production house (the last time, YRF made it happen.

How do you know Shah Rukh & Salman are not in touch?-Baba Siddiqui

Congress MLA Baba Siddiqui, who 'engineered' the SRK-Salman truce last year and got them together at his iftar party again this year, insists the patch-up was not a photo-op.
Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 16, 2014)

The paparazzi have boycotted your friend Salman Khan after being told to keep their distance from the star. His father, Salim Khan, talking about the incident to Mirror (July 14), groused about how close they had got to them at your iftar party...
Salim uncle is right. They were even leaning on some of the other guests. I have been hosting such events for decades. My Eid-e-Milad parties started back in '89 and after a decade, when they got really big, we started having roza iftar. After 37 years in politics, I can handle such situations.

How did you get Shah Rukh Khan and Salman to bury the hatchet and share a hug at your party last year?
I have known SRK for 25 years and Salman since childhood. Both are my friends. Their fight was labelled big simply because they are such huge stars.

Didn't you engineer the patch-up?
No baba. Why would I? They are grown-up, they can make their own decisions. At the party Salman tapped SRK on his shoulder from behind. SRK reciprocated. Bas!

And this time who made the first move?
As soon as SRK saw Salman entering and walking towards where he was sitting, he stood up.

But weren't these instances just a photo-op? They didn't speak to each other after that...
Says who? How do you know they don't talk to each other over phone? That they don't send each other text messages? If two people come together in the holy month of Ramzan, isn't it a good thing?

How would you rate the two as actors?
Salman is good in naughty roles, while SRK excels in serious ones.

Do you talk politics with them?
No, we have lots more to talk.

Salman is tilting towards BJP...
Going to a certain BJP member's (read Narendra Modi) house doesn't imply that.

But SRK is still a Congressman...
No, that's not true. They both have their individual ideologies.

‘How do you know they’re not in touch?’How did you take your party's defeat in the recent LS polls?
The BJP campaigning was in-yourface, it built up people's expectations. But we'll make a comeback in the next elections. Ajooba ek hi baar hota hai, hamesha nahi (pauses). Take a look around you. Vegetables are getting costlier by the day. Cooking gas prices too have increased. But the PM (Modi) hasn't spoken on anything since the last 30 days.

You haven't visited your buddy Sanjay Dutt in jail...
I haven't gone to meet him in jail, but I did meet him when he was out on parole. He's a family friend. I was a minister when he went to jail before this and I still went to meet him openly in Court.

You got a threat from the underworld, is it sorted?
How can it get sorted? Those guys were arrested but they're now out on bail. My security which was beefed up after the threat, continues to be maintained. I have to be very careful.
