I was affected by negative social media comments during Yeh Hai Mohabbatein-Anita Hassanandani

Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; October 19, 2025)

After years of portraying the quintessential protagonist on television, Anita Hassanandani took a bold leap in 2013 when she embraced a grey character in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. The move, though creatively fulfilling, wasn’t immediately welcomed by fans. What followed was a wave of social media backlash, not for her performance but for daring to trouble the beloved lead couple played by Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel.

The actress recalls, “I would feel affected by all the negative social media comments, especially during Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. I even questioned myself, wondering if it was the right decision. Heroine banne ke baad, suddenly villain? I wasn’t trolled for my performance but for going after Ishita (Divyanka’s character). People would comment, asking me to leave the lead couple alone. I had expected them to appreciate my performance, but that wasn’t the case, and I felt dejected initially. It was my husband Rohit (Reddy) who helped shift my perspective. He told me they were reacting that way because I was doing a great job. Since then, I have stopped letting it affect me.”

Anita continued to play negative roles on television, but she is now ready for a change. She admits, “I enjoyed playing negative characters, but I am bored now. With Chhoriyan Chali Gaon, people got to see the real me. I hope that gives them a fresh perspective and helps them rediscover what I have done in the past. TV can be repetitive. You do something once, and you keep getting the same kind of roles. I am hoping this reality show will break that pattern and give me the kind of reset I have been looking for.”

Currently, Anita is riding high on her recent victory in the reality show Chhoriyan Chali Gaon. She also took a well-deserved family break in Goa last week, unwinding after her intense stint on the show. Looking ahead, she is keen on exploring more meaningful opportunities.

“I am taking it one step at a time. Now that I am coming back with this show, it will be clear that I am open and ready to work again. The thing is, once you become a mother, people assume you have lost interest in acting or will not commit to work. That assumption is frustrating. With Chhoriyan, I feel that mindset might change, and people will start seeing me in a new light,” she concludes.

I lacked the social skills required for a film career-Anita Hassanandani

Anita Hassanandani returns to her old self

Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; November 8, 2024)

In the initial days of her career, Anita Hassanandani played the lead actress in a couple of Hindi films, but her movie career did not take off the way she would have liked it to.

Looking back, the actress says, “Honestly, I didn’t get great work after Kucch Toh Hai and Krishna Cottage. I was in talks for a few projects, but nothing interesting materialized. I think I lacked the social skills required for a film career; I was not always out there meeting people and telling them how ambitious I was.”

However, Anita has no regrets and is happy with the way her career in television shaped up. The actress, who is currently essaying a negative role in the TV show Suman Indori, shares, “TV helped me feel settled and I enjoy working in this medium. I’m also doing south films. I find the set-up very professional and enjoy the work culture. Films start on time and rarely get stalled. Also, they have upped their game in recent years.”

‘The fame and success you get on social media is temporary’
Anita has been active on social media over the past few years, but doesn’t see herself as an influencer. She says, “The fame and success you get on social media is temporary. Today, if I enter a room, people will not know me because I have many followers, they will know me because I am an actor. Of course, social media can be lucrative for some people, but I feel it is not the be all and end all for an actor.”

There’s a bit of mom guilt mixed in with the excitement, says Anita Hassanandani on her comeback

Anita Hassanandani Reddy is all set to return to the small screen after a five-year break with the show Suman Indori. While the actor — who went on hiatus when she was pregnant with her son — made a brief appearance in Hum Rahein Ya Na Rahein last year, she views the new show as her actual comeback.

She admits that getting back into the groove required her to mentally prepare for leaving her son, Aarav, at home: “Leaving Aarav has been challenging, but I’m coping with it. I love my work and have been missing shooting, so there’s a bit of mom guilt mixed in with the excitement. Rohit (Reddy, her husband, internet personality) also takes time off to be with Aaru when I’m working. We’re striving to find a balance that allows us both to pursue our passions while giving him the attention he needs.”

The 43-year-old says she’s been splitting her time between home and the set, which allows her to spend quality time with her son. “I try to take him [to set] on the weekends; now he also knows how to video call and has been a great support. He is young, but understands that his mum will come back,” she shares.

Despite her careful planning, the process has not been without its challenges. “There have been days where he has called me crying,” she reveals, but adds that her shoot schedule has allowed them to spend more time together.

“I do get breaks between shoots, so there’s a balance. But TV does take a lot of time and I was mentally prepared for this,” she wraps up.

Pearl V Puri arrested under POCSO Act in a 2019 case; Ekta Kapoor extends support

The case was filed by a minor girl’s father, the actor is now in judicial custody
Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; June 6, 2021)

TV actor Pearl V Puri was arrested in Mumbai on Friday afternoon by the Waliv police (Vasai) in connection with a case filed against him in 2019. The actor has been charged with molesting a minor girl (aged five) two years ago. “Pearl has been booked under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. He is in judicial custody,” said Sanjay Patil, DCP Zone 2, Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar.

The girl’s father had approached the police in 2019, after which an FIR was registered against Pearl. Sadanand Date, Commissioner of Police, Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) commissionerate, told Bombay Times, “It is a 2019 case, but we took action after DCP Patil vetted the matter and evidence. More details will follow after the investigation.” According to sources, as per the complaint, the alleged incident took place on the set of a TV show after which the girl’s father approached the Waliv police because they stay in Vasai.

The TV industry is shocked at the news. In a long Instagram post, producer Ekta Kapoor claimed that the child’s mother (who, as per Ekta’s post, works in the TV industry) told her that Pearl is innocent and the case has been filed by the child’s father to prove that the mother cannot take care of her child. Pearl has worked on several of Ekta's shows, like Naagin 3, Bepanah Pyaar and Brahmarakshas 2.

Apart from Ekta, actors like Anita Hassanandani, Krystal D’Souza, Nia Sharma and Karishma Tanna (who he was rumoured to be dating earlier) have come out in support of Pearl on social media. Karishma told us, “I’ve known Pearl for many years and I was aware of this case, which was registered in 2019. The allegations are baseless and false. I have been in the loop throughout.”

The child’s mother told me that her husband is trying to prove that a working mother on a set cannot take care of her kid: Ekta Kapoor

In her post on Instagram, Ekta Kapoor wrote, “Will I support a child molester…or a molester of any kind? But what I witnessed from last night to now, was the absolute low in human depravity. How can humanity go to this level? How can people who are upset with each other, drag a third person into their own fight?

How can a human being take on another human being and do this? After various calls with the child‘s/girl’s mother, who openly said that Pearl was not involved and it’s her husband trying to create stories to keep her child and prove that a working mother on a set cannot take care of her kid.

If this is true then it is wrong on so many levels! Using an extremely important movement like ‘Me Too’ frivolously, to get your own agendas met with and mentally torturing a child and making an innocent person guilty. I have no right to decide, the courts will decide who is right & wrong.

My opinion only comes from what the girl’s mother said to me last night & that is — Pearl is innocent …and it is very very sad if people are using various tactics to prove working mothers are unable to take care of their children, because there are predators on the set. I have all the voice notes and messages between the child’s mother and me which clearly points to the false allegations being put on Pearl.

The film industry is as safe or as unsafe as any other business. To give it a bad name to get your agenda sorted is the lowest form of low ever.

If by chance, Pearl is proved innocent, I request people to look more deeply into how the important & much needed movements in today’s time, are being used unfairly reducing the gravitas of the situation. May justice prevail! #MayJusticePrevail (sic).”

Once I conceived naturally, I realised that age is just a number-Anita Hassanandani

Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; October 12, 2020)

Anita Hassanandani has finally put the rumour mills to rest and confirmed the buzz — she is expecting her first baby with entrepreneur hubby, Rohit Reddy and their baby is due in February, next year. “We were waiting for the right time to announce our pregnancy,” she says, adding, “I think 2021 is going to be a year of babies (laugh!).”

Anita and Rohit, who got married in 2013 in Goa, started thinking of going the family way only after they participated in the reality show, Nach Baliye last year. She beams, “We had never felt the pressure to start a family from either of our families. However, after Nach Baliye, we felt that we were ready to embrace parenthood. With the lockdown, the timing seemed perfect. We got to spend a lot of time with each other and decided to go for it. At the end of the day, it’s God’s plan and Rohit and I can’t be more excited about it.”

The actress admits to having had her share of apprehensions about the pregnancy as she is in her late 30s. Anita shares, “The age-factor did play on my mind. Many people told me that it’s going to be tough, it overwhelms you. But once I conceived naturally, I realised that age is just a number. You need to be mentally and physically fit for everything to fall in place. Jo naseeb mein likha hota hai, woh toh hota hi hai. Today, Rohit and I feel well-settled — we are financially and mentally in a place where we are ready to have a child.”

Anita maintains that it is important for wouldbe parents to take care of their mental and physical health. She says, “I am someone who goes with the flow. Right now, the Coronavirus situation is serious, but the idea is not to take undue stress because if God has planned it for you in a certain way, he has definitely thought of everything. If you are at peace, sab smoothly ho jaata hai.”

Ask Anita, who is the fussy parent between her and Rohit, and pat comes the reply, “Rohit, any day. He is reading more books and fussing over my diet. He is, in general, more clued in. He is so excited and involved already, I think I am sorted as he will take care of everything.”

Will we see the mommy-to-be return to the spotlight soon after the baby arrives? “I have been working continuously since I was 16. So, initially, I was restless and sure about returning back to work soon after having the baby. But now that it has started to sink in, I can feel my priorities changing. I can’t believe I am telling you that at this stage, I really don’t care about work or when I will return. For now, I want to enjoy motherhood and make the most of it. The kicks and flutters in my belly, I just want to enjoy all of this and my time with my baby, without worrying about anything else. At the same time, I’ll do a little bit of work here and there. However, the priority right now is motherhood,” Anita signs off.

Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 12, 2020)

On Saturday, Anita Hassanandani and husband Rohit Reddy shared the news that they are expecting. Since then, congratulations have been pouring in for the wouldbe parents. “I want to enjoy motherhood and focus on my family for a while as this time never returns,” shares Anita, confiding that they got the big news when Rohit’s father was hospitalised. “A few days later, he passed away. Now, Rohit, believes his father is returning as our child, so, if we have a son, we will name him Ravi after him.” The baby is due in February.

In July, the actress resumed shooting for Ekta Kapoor’s Naagin 4. At the time, she was aware of her pregnancy and is grateful to the producers for their consideration. “I gave some close-ups and worked for a little while to wrap up the remaining portions. The makers ensured they were solo shots and I didn’t have to interact with many people,” she informs.

Anita is determined to stay positive in the face of the ongoing pandemic. “God has planned things this way, he’ll take care of the rest. Everything will fall into place soon and Covid-19 will also go away,” she says fervently, insisting she’ll be a strict mother. “All my cousins call me mummy,” she reveals with a laugh.

I think my character in Naagin 4 has exhausted her run-Anita Hassanandani

Akash Bhatnagar (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 9, 2020)

While most TV actors were excited to get back into action after a three-month forced hiatus, Anita Hassanandani was petrified about joining the shoot of Naagin 4. “My husband was really scared sending me back to work. But once I was back, I felt safe with all the precautions being taken. On Ekta’s (Kapoor) set, the actor’s well-being is always top priority,” asserts the actress, who resumed work on Tuesday at a Chandivali studio.

Elaborating on the safety measures being taken, she informs that there are sanitisers everywhere, with even chairs and jewellery being sanitised frequently. Masks and gloves are compulsory. “I don’t have to do much, just make sure I keep sanitising my hands often and wash them whenever I go into the vanity van. I am also careful not to touch my face much,” she says, adding that the crew has been reduced, but they are managing well. “Everyone’s safety is more important right now than how the show looks.”

There are only a few episodes left to wrap up Naagin 4 and Ekta has promised a bigger season five. Will Anita be a part of it? “I’m fortunate to have been a part of two seasons and would love to be in the next one, too. But I think my character has exhausted her run. I am content with my two seconds of fame,” she says, expecting to complete the season in 45 days.

Talking about the future, Anita shares that the lockdown has delayed everything. “I got offers for some outside shoots, but right now I am not ready to travel. I am still a little paranoid,” she admits, adding that October will be the floor test as the curve is expected to flatten. “Hopefully, I’ll have clarity about my projects by then.”

The actress, who hasn’t been seen on the big screen in a while, reveals that she had reunited with former co-star Tusshar Kapoor before the Coronavirus lockdown for a film for Ekta’s production house. “I am not sure when they are planning to release it now, but it was amazing working with Tusshar again. Any association with Ekta is something I look forward to. They are like family to me,” she signs off.

TV industry unites for a video to cheer up people amid the lockdown

Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; April 24, 2020)

Following the footsteps of artistes from Bollywood and other film industries, members of the television fraternity have also come together to make a video to cheer people and urge them to stay at home, during the nationwide lockdown following the Coronavirus outbreak.

Curated by Ekta Kapoor, several artistes and creative people from the TV industry have pitched in to create the engaging video from their homes. It features Sidharth Shukla, Mouni Roy, Shailesh Lodha, Anita Hassanandani, Rohitashv Gour, Maniesh Paul, Karishma Tanna, director-choreographer Remo D’Souza, Divyanka Tripathi, Erica Fernandes, Parth Samthaan, Shabir Ahluwalia, Shehnaaz Gill, Sriti Jha, Karan V Grover and Aasif Sheikh, among others.

Taking a cue from Bollywood's music video, Ekta Kapoor ropes in top television actors for a special video to encourage people to stay indoors
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; April 24, 2020)

Well aware that they enjoy an unparalleled reach across India, Ekta Kapoor has brought together top television stars for a special video to highlight the importance of staying indoors amid the pandemic. Bigg Boss 13 winner Sidharth Shukla, Mouni Roy, Anita Hassanandani, Karishma Tanna and Maniesh Paul are among the many actors who have shot their portions at their respective homes.

"The video is a collective effort by the television producers' association of our country. The current scenario calls for us to be united more than ever, and entertainment is the common language across the country," says Kapoor, the brain behind the initiative. By offering a peek into the daily lives of the actors, the video shows how one can utilise the stay-at-home period productively. "We [roped in] top television stars so that it resonates with people across the country. This is our endeavour to encourage everyone to stay home," adds Kapoor.

Roy, who features in the video that drops online today, believes one must use the time to pause and reflect. "I remember reading that it would be sad if we came out of this experience unchanged. The need of the hour is to stay in, take care of yourself and your families, and maintain social distancing."

Positivity is key to tackling the crisis, says Sonali Jaffar, who conceptualised the feature. "We may not be able to control the events, but we have the power to not get reduced by them. The television fraternity has come together to abide by what is considered the new normal," she says.

Inspired by the Salman Khan-hosted reality show, Bigg Boss, a soon-to-release music video, the brain child of Ekta Kapoor, encourages people to stay indoors during the lockdown. The TV czarina has roped in all the top names from the small screen, including Mouni Roy, Divyanka Tripathi, Anita Hassanandani, Erica Fernandes, Parth Samthaan, Sidharth Shukla, Manish Paul, Shabir Ahluwalia, Shehnaaz Gill, Sriti Jha, Karishma Tanna, Reem Sameer Shaikh, Karan V Grover, Aasif Sheikh and Karan Jotwani.

“An initiative by the TV producers’ association, the video was planned over several conference calls and is a team effort, encouraging people to stay home,” Ekta asserts. Remo D’souza features as the Big Boss, ordering inmates to complete tasks. “It was fun to be a part of this project,” says the choreographer-turned-filmmaker who is working on a few scripts. “There is a lot of reading, brainstorming and writing happening.”

J D Majethia, Chairman, IFTPC (Indian Film and Television Producers Council), is ecstatic to have the industry rally behind the cause. “One message from Ekta on the (TV producers’ texting) group and we have an entertaining multistarrer, titled Quarantined, made without having artistes under one roof,” he gushes.

Television is more secure than Bollywood-Anita Hassanandani

Anita Hassanandani
With Galti Se Mis-Tech marking her web debut, Anita Hassanandani on exploring different mediums in a 20-year career
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; April 24, 2018)

A successful run in television and a not-so-inspiring stint in movies behind her, Anita Hassanandani has finally given in to the lure of the digital medium. The actor will star in ALT Balaji’s Galti Se Mis-Tech, a series that offers a humorous take on love in the age of technology. In a chat with mid-day, she talks about jumping on the digital bandwagon and why television remains her first love. Edited excerpts from the interview:

What took you long to foray into the web space?
I was busy doing TV shows and was pressed for time. Secondly, nothing great was offered to me. I’ve been thinking about acting in a digital series for a while. The quirky storyline of Galti Se Mis-Tech appealed to me. It was the perfect opportunity to start my web journey.

Did it get awkward to romance Rithvik Dhanjani on screen?
Rithvik and I are good friends. We wanted to keep the show as real as possible; we brought our real-life equation to the table. I’m glad he is my co-star. Our familiarity helped build the chemistry.

Do you believe that lifelong relationships can be formed on social media?
It has worked out for some people I know. But I’m too old for all this. Having said that, Rohit [Reddy, husband] pursued me on Facebook. So, you can say that social media did have a small role in our relationship.

Which medium is more creatively satisfying — television or web?
The medium has never been an issue. Be it films, TV or web — they satisfy me all the same. Ultimately, it is the role that matters. Sure, foraying into the web space implies targeting a different audience.

You’ve been part of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein [YHM] for five years. Does it get monotonous?
Even when I was doing Kavvyanjali, it got boring after a point. Shagun [her character in YHM] has an interesting graph. My character has been swinging between positive and negative; it has a lot of variation, so I am far from getting bored.

Do you miss Bollywood?
I am not going to lie about it. I have never been offered anything exciting in films. Television is more secure. I’ve been doing this since I was 16 and I’m happy in this space.

Bollywood rises to the Beat Pe Booty challenge

BOMBAY TIMES (August 20, 2016)

The song Beat Pe Booty from the upcoming superhero flick, A Flying Jatt, has become a hit on social media. More so, after the film's lead actors (Tiger Shroff and Jacqueline Fernandez) and director Remo D'souza gave the Beat Pe Booty challenge to their Bollywood colleagues and the audience at large.

It all began with the choreographer-turned-director asking producer Ekta Kapoor to shake a leg to the club number. Soon, celebs like Hrithik Roshan, Prabhu Dheva, Tusshar, Sunny Leone, Mouni Roy, Divyanka Tripathi, Anita Hassanandani, Krystle D'Souza, Masaba Gupta Mantena and Ganesh Acharya, among many others joined in, grooving their 'booties' to the track.

It didn't take long for the challenge to become a rage as fans from across India and overseas started sharing their videos. While this dare grows by the day, it's nice to see that the trend of promoting an industry peer's movie is here to stay.

A Flying Jatt, produced by Balaji Motion Pictures, releases August 25.

I never thought I would ever be comfortable with insults-Anita Hassanandani

Roshni K Olivera (BOMBAY TIMES; July 11, 2016)

For the first time in her acting career, Anita Hassanandani Reddy played a vamp in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, but some time later she turned positive in the TV show. Now with the many twists and turns, it seems like the spunky actress may take the negative path again in the show. Excerpts from an interview:

The big question on everyone's minds - Are you going to turn negative again on your TV show Yeh Hai Mohabbatein?
Yes! And I'm glad that it is well justified. My character Shagun has been pushed to a level where she can't help but turn negative. I'm super excited because as an actor, it's not only challenging but my role also has a lot of variations.

Some feel negative roles don't suit you. What do you think?
I also thought so earlier. But I'm glad I didn't go with my instinct and went with Ekta's (producer Ekta Kapoor). Shagun has revived my career. It is the most challenging role that I have played; it has brought me maximum fame.

Your friend Ekta has become a bua. Have you been to their home recently to meet the baby?
I will be going this week to meet baby Laksshya. Ekta has turned bua, I have turned maasi. We are all on cloud nine!

What about your plans to start a family?
Career-wise, this is my best phase. Also, my husband Rohit is starting his new business, so we don't feel ready yet.

Your husband is not from the industry... has that ever been a problem in any way?
Have you seen him? He looks more like an actor than I do. Jokes apart, he's very proud of me and my achievements. It's never been a problem and never will be.

How do you take care of the male ego, given that the media is bound to focus on you when you are together, say at an event?
His chest just swells up with pride when I get attention. As long as he has all my attention, he's cool (smiles). In fact he's media-friendly too and everyone loves him.

Talking about ego, how does it feel to crush egos on your show Comedy Nights Bachao, which is about taking potshots at celebs?
I never thought I would ever be comfortable with insults, but it's all in good taste. I'm not saying this because it's part of my job. What matters is where and how things are said. Like if it's on a comedy show, then it is all in good fun... I don't mean it and I'm sure no one does. In fact, I just love going to shoot for Comedy Nights Bachao. Celebs who come on the show know the format and hence come willingly, they come all prepared. And honestly, there aren't any egos as such; whoever has come till date has been very chilled out. Also, with the likes of Shah Rukh and Salman coming and participating wholeheartedly, the rest of the industry has opened up to the idea of being a part of the show.

All the behind-the-scenes action from the star-studded Annual Colors Party

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 14, 2016)

You can be certain that wherever the Bigg Boss contestants' head, they take their ego clashes with them. Three months after the show's finale aired, former inmate Mandana Karimi walked into the Colors annual bash with producer-boyfriend Gaurav Gupta and looked right through the other leggy women who had recently shared a roof with her.

Kishwer Merchant and Suyyash Rai also arrived together, wearing their hearts on their sleeves and didn't stir from each others' sides. The same cannot be said for former housemates-turned lovers-turned strangers, Armaan Kohli and Tanishaa Mukerji.

Tanishaa who made an eye-catching statement in a tangerine, two-tone gown with cutouts walked out as soon as her ex walked in. This didn't bother Armaan who was generous with his jadoo ki jhappis, hugging everyone from Gautam Gulati who looked like a green horn in a velvet suit to actor-host Arjun Kapoor who seemed happy to re-unite with the Khatron Ke Khiladi team. In fact, Armaan was the last celeb to leave the venue in the wee hours, in high spirits after shaking a leg.

The annual bash celebrating completion of eight successful years for the channel was a star-studded event hosted at a suburban five star. Varun Dhawan was the first to arrive and was immediately branded with a Brand Ambassador Award. On his way out he bumped into Anil Kapoor who is always willing to do a “My name is Lakhan“ on the red carpet. The two looked stylishly similar in navy blue checked suits and seemed to be telling each other “Check me out mate!“ Aditi Rao Hydari in a fuchsia gown and Huma Qureshi in an LBD made smashing hit-and-miss appearances. TV Czarina Ekta Kapoor arrived on time, hand-in-hand with actress Anita Hassanandani. Anita's actor-entrepreneur hubby Rohit Reddy tagged along with Jeetendra.

We got a jhalak of Madhuri Dixit too who was escorted by hubby Dr Sriram Nene and spent time chatting with co-judge Karan Johar whose shoes glittering in pink and gold sequins stole the spotlight from all the high heels around. No wonder Arjun stuck to tamer tan leather shoes.

Ayushmann Khurrana dropped by late in the night after wrapping up another SoBo event featuring Ranveer Singh but Malaika Arora Khan, currently in the news for her split with hubby Arbaaz Khan, gave the bash a miss. Ditto for Salman Khan and Kapil Sharma who has broken away to launch his own show on a rival channel.

So it was no Comedy Night but still a Colorful one!

Sharad Kelkar to play Sanjeev Kumar’s role in Hero remake

Neha Maheshwri Bhagat (BOMBAY TIMES; March 4, 2014)

Actor Sharad Kelkar will be part of the remake of the 1983 superhit Hero, which also stars Sooraj Pancholi (Aditya Pancholi’s son), Athiya Shetty (Suniel Shetty’s daughter), Govinda and Vinod Khanna.

Contrary to rumours that Abhimanyu Singh will reprise the role of Inspector Damodar Mathur — played by Sanjeev Kumar in the original — Sharad will be seen playing the character. Interestingly, both Sharad and Abhimanyu, who were last seen in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela, were in contention for the part. According to sources, Sharad has already joined the second schedule shoot in Manali. “The role of his wife, originally played by Neeta Mehta, has now gone to Anita Hassanandani.” The actor remained unavailable for comment.
